Parasol New Arrivals • May 30, 2006

Hi friends,

Today, our beloved UPS driver dropped off a thirty count box of the new Lassie Foundation "Through And Through" DCD. This band has to be one of the most inspiring and creative forces to ever grace our ears. Unfortunately, they have called it quits but we can expect new music from the individual members in various projects. This, then, is our homage to you, The Lassie Foundation. You will be sadly missed. For you snoozers who may have missed out on this band, this double CD is a great introduction.

You are infinity,

Royal/Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week
Snailhouse - The Silence Show CD $11.48 15% off (Scratch)
Feat. Montreal based Mike Feuerstack (Kepler, Wooden Stars) From its haunting & evocative opening chords to its self-assured instrumentation & lyricism. Instrumentally, the songs are subtle & disarming, creating an atmosphere of stark beauty. The vocals, however deliberate in their drive forward, maintain a delicate & unassuming tone. This recording braves an emotional landscape few artists are willing to explore with such honesty.
Jim's Pick: Best New Music from Scandinavia
1999 - Nineteenninetynine CD $11.48 15% off (CelebrityLifestyle)
1999 is one of those contrail-spewing zoom-rock juggernauts that Sweden is becoming more and more famous for, like Silverbullit/Citizen Bird, Franke, Svensson… Colossal jetstream riffs, mechanized krautrock rhythms, serrated noise, and a crazy-ass vocalist-lyricist-keyboardist-manchild, who also graces the album's cover. Dude sounds like Kim Gordon singing early-Sonic Youth songs…dude even looks like KG, check it out! Think early-Wire and, oddly enough, recent Wire. Think The Stooges, early-Cure, Sonic Youth, Big Black, entire rosters from Homestead/Am Rep/Touch & Go/SST Records heyday, and your cult-heroic, all-time-favorite local rock band from wherever you were in 1989.. Click here to check out Jim's new and improved Scandinavian music page, updated every other day or so. Plenty of sound samples and a bit more detail than you get in the regular update.

Anoice
Remmings
PS, UK Let's get this straight immediately. Anoice is not another instumental group with strong rock tendencies and an armchair association with classical music. Unlike numerous contemporaries which they will undoubtedly be compared to, their goal is not to follow the trends and make the soft/loud/soft/loud juxtapositions in every song, but to carefully craft each song with a strong attention to melody, solid accompaniment, and courteous counterpoint. One of the remarkable qualities of Anoice is that they truly work as a group, with members who aren't afraid to remain quiet while others play. Through meticulous composition Anoice has achieved an unrivaled quality. While the band isn't intentionally attempting to be cinematic, the recordings achieve something breathtaking and emotive: imagine the Rachel's scoring a film by Ang Lee. Anoice's music is anthemic and rich while being introspective and personal. Each track is preceeded by brief and dense ambient tracks to clense the audio palate much like ginger in your sushi boat. Anoice are a six-piece group based in Tokyo. The band was formed in January, 2004 by members Ricco (guitar/keyboards) and Taku (guitars and mandolin), who were soon joined by Yuki (piano), Utaka (viola), Matsu (bass), and Yossy (drums). While each member cites different musical influences, it's fairly evenly split between rock (think My Bloody Valentine meets King Crimson), classical and modern composers (Perhaps Debussy and Shostakovitch writing together after drinking heavily from Phillip Glass), jazz and electronic ( Autechre meets Mum maybe?). Combining all of these influences with their obvious Japanese heritage Anoice has created an album with an emotional arc, climaxing magnificently as it ends and leaves the listener determined to press play once again. Pronounced "a noyce," the name comes from the Celtic word for "now" (Anois). Remmings is their debut release and contains four named songs and five unnamed songs. Cover art by Non Format. Mastering by Jeff Lipton (Flaming Lips, Magnetic Fields) "Anoice have produced something entirely different and original, a mature record of great beauty and attention to detail that rises above any clichés and should by all accounts establish them as one of the leading artists today." Vesikansi
PS, US 49 minutes of gooey new goodness spread over just three tracks! From the same tattered coven of piss drinkers who alternately refer to themselves as ANAKSIMANDROS comes this. These fumbling Finns conjure a smoky, shit-drunk forest of noise, folk & unsurpassable tribal improv.. a delicious Yahowha soup with a spicy, burnt Amon Duul crust. Oh so highly recommended. Baird, Kathleen
Lullaby for Strangers
PS, US Member of the Comus channeling freak-folk outfit SPIRES THAT IN THE SUNSET RISE. A delightful follow up to her critically acclaimed 2005 debut. Her voice is deep, sleepy, & Nico-esque, her instrumentation exotic & imaginative. Battiato, Franco
Pollution
PS, US Franco Battiato's wonderfully lively 1973 concept album Pollution is an audaciously psychedelic album drawn from the space rock dimension with good portions of electronics and keyboard layers. Drawing heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer, Battiato and company (besides himself, three backing band members play synth as well) give Pollution an extreme electronic edge. With comparisons to Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, and Pink Floyd, Pollution was declared "genius" by Frank Zappa. Extremely influential on the '90s Chicago post-rock mafia. Original artwork. New detailed liner notes.

Bear Quartet, The
Eternity Now
PS, SWEDEN New album from one of the world's best pop bands. "Eternity now" will be released on the 24th of May in Sweden, likely a day earlier here at Parasol. It has only been eight months since their last release "Saturday Night" and like that album, this is an album that has an electronic touch with really nice harmonies and a twist of Black Sabbath. The first single will be "The Repairing of the Red Sea". The band says: "It was recorded at Dubios at Odenplan, Stockholm, Sweden with Chrille Roth, just as "Saturday Night". Eleven songs, of which two are skits, you know like it (used to be) on hip hop records. It's heavily electronic and sometimes heavy metal. Not purely though. It's not "genre music" in that way, but it distinguishes itself from the latest album, which sort of fell between two chairs; we tried to fit songs into a form that we didn't really master at the time. This time we only rehearsed for 45 minutes and more or less wrote the songs in the studio. It feels way better. The album's a bit monotonous (in a good, minimalistic way) and it's much more melodic than we thought it would be. About half of it, if you count the minutes, is intrumental and we have a spectacular guest on one of the songs. Can't say who it is yet though."

Bellrays
Have a Little Faith
PS, US "Perfectly captures the band's singular sound, which combines two seemingly disparate forms of American music: the raw power of garage rock and the emotional drama of soul. 'Imagine Tina Turner fronting the Stooges,' goes one common description of the band, and although that hardly encompasses the BellRays' artistry, there is some historical truth behind the hook: If the BellRays' recordings and live performances are utterly of-the-moment, full of urgency and sheer presence, the seamlessness with which the Southern California outfit combines punk and soul also hearkens back to another time when the two were integrally connected. Detroit was the capital of both; Iggy, Ike and Tina actually shared the stage; and the MC5's aesthetic and politics drew explicitly from black music and counterculture. HOT!

Buckley, Lord
The Royal Court Of Lord Buckly
PS, UK "The fuel to my success" Bob Dylan. "The most sensational comic of our time" Frank Sinatra. One of the bravest, best-loved artists America has produced, Lord Buckley adopted the argot of the streets of black America whilst posing as a sophisticated English Artistocrat, creating verbal symphonies of astounding originality by combining beat poetry with historical tales, Shakespeare soliloquies and stories from the Bible; at once manic, joyous and psychedelic. The Original Rapper; an inspiration to everyone from Lenny Bruce to Jerry Garcia to Jonathan Winters to Robin Williams to Bill Cosby. 'The Royal Court of Lord Buckley' restores in their entirety the first Lord Buckley albums ('Euphoria Volumes 1 and 2') that were originally issued by the Vaya label in America 1951; The definitive performance of Buckley's signature piece 'The Nazz' (Jesus of Nazareth) along with other startling Buckley monologues including 'The Hip Gahn' (Mahatma Gandhi), 'The Gasser' (Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca), 'Jonah & the Whale' (The Old Testament) and 'Nero' (ancient Rome) and very rare historical recordings of 'Murder','The Dog and the Wolf', 'The Grasshopper and the Ant', 'The Mouse & the Lion' and 'The Lion's Breath'.

Cash, Johnny
Open Road
PS, US The recordings that Johnny Cash made at the beginning of his long and fortunate career all took place in SUN studios, under the watchful eye of producer Sam Phillips, well known for also having discovered Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Phillips was struck by "Hey Porter," a song Cash had written just after he returned from the military. When asked to write a ballad for the B side, Cash wrote "Cry, Cry, Cry," that very same night. The single sold 100,000 copies in the USA alone. His second single, "Folsom Prison Blues," was just as successful. In '56 "I Walk The Line" remained on the charts for 44 weeks and sold a million copies. From this point forward there was no place to go but up for the young Johnny Cash. The precious recordings collected in this Universe CD bring together those very recordings that made him famous, along with some outtakes and rarities. A long-playing, 32-track CD to commemorate this musical giant.

Corsano, Chris & B. Chasny/Paul Metzger
Split
PS, US C. Corsano (sparring partner of Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, Nels Cline, et al) and Ben Chasny (aka SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE) had previously paired up for the School Of The Flower LP on Drag City. As wide a stylistic swath as that record cut, it was far from an exhaustive map of their topography. Here, Corsano's drums and Chasny's guitar chatter & clatter with jittery hyper-articulation, worrying the meat off the bone in short sharp strokes. A "Worm Confesses" over the course of one side of this split record & is given an impassioned absolution. For over 2 decades, Paul Metzger (TVBC)was one of the Twin Cities' overly well-kept secrets. His recent emergence as a solo artist, via a pair of glowingly-received releases on the Chairkickers & Mutant Music labels, has started to raise his profile to a level commensurate with his devil's-crossroads-deal talent. On a guitar modified with music box innards & an accompanying tanpura, Metzger dives deep into the raga heart of a moonlit day & returns with the jewels of "August." Released in an edition of 766 copies, with silkscreened poplar wood covers.

My First Stop
rcc007lp 9 . 2 9

What's interesting is that half their music is straight-up amphetamine garage boogie. This is all short, sharp & sweetly melodic songs hollered in Franglais & sounds incredible live. Also loads of playful minimal lo-fi synth-pop that ranges from snarling, spluttering Whitehouse-style analogue terror to cute micro-disco tunes.

Denim
Back In Denim
PS, UK Denim was the brainchild of Lawrence who had spent the previous decade as the singer, songwriter and mastermind behind that ultimate independent rock band, Felt. Having achieved his goal of releasing 10 albums and 10 singles in 10 years during the course of the eighties, Lawrence disbanded Felt and relocated to New York. It was there that Lawrence translated his homesick thoughts from abroad into the series of songs that made up Back In Denim. Over in New York he wrote as he reminisced about his West Midlands childhood, flares, chopper bikes, tower blocks, stringy beards, hippies, skinheads and the IRA's pub bombings in Birmingham. He set this to a musical backdrop of Mickey Most and Mike Leander productions, Lee Perry and the Glitter Band. Back In Denim was recorded and mixed across a two year period on Lawrence's return to London. It was finally completed in July 1992 and, for the first time in his career, Lawrence found himself signed to a major label via Boys Own, a dance label operating through London Records. The album was produced by John Leckie although completed by Lawrence with Brian O'Shaughnessy, Leckie having allegedly been driven to complete distraction by Lawrence who he described as madder and more impossible than anyone he'd worked with including Spector, Lennon and Syd Barrett. Back In Denim kick starts with the pounding Glitter beat of "Back In Denim". The Glitter Band's drummer Pete Phipps is featured on the record. The album maintains a powerful mix of Glam and pop hooks and references throughout with one foot in the seventies past and the other very firmly in the technology of the nineties. As such, Back In Denim was an undoubted pre-cursor to Britpop, Blur and Pulp, in particular. As ever, throughout his career Lawrence was ahead but out of step with popular taste. Back In Denim was no mere exercise in nostalgia or Glam 'n' Glitter revival and, as Lawrence firmly attests today, it is a protest album though not without a real sense of biting humour coming through tracks like "The Osmonds" and "I'm Against The Eighties". The album's only single, "Middle Of The Road", was itself a reference to the 197O's band of "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" fame. It also featured Denim's version of the theme from Robin's Nest on the B-Side. Its lyrics, however, were truly cutting edge, a plea for the individual's right to choose rather than be force fed its heroes - "I hate The Stones and I hate blues/Eddie Cochran and Blue Suede Shoes/I hate the King, I hate Chuck Berry/I Hate hooker, I hate Leadbelly, alright..." Back In Denim was unveiled to the music press before Christmas 1992 and received the most astonishing reviews at the time. In its wisdom, London Records were completely thrown by the ecstatic press reaction just as they hade been puzzled that it sounded nothing like Felt. They chose to delay the album and preface it with a single instead. All momentum was lost and the single, of course, flopped. Lawrence's dream was once again shattered although right now, in 2006, the dream is alive once again. Back In Denim should now get its just desserts just as Lawrence, a true wild card, completes a brand new album from what was once a Denim side project, Go Kart Mozart. He's back...

Existensminimum
Last Night My Head Tried To Explode And I Wrote Everything Down
PS, SWEDEN First full-length from Swedish studio-wizard/uber-producer Magnus Henriksson AKA Existensminimum, who's also a member of Moneybrother. On the heels of two amazing singles ("From Me To You" and "Running Down Everyone") this album is even more surreal and adventuresome. Looking beyond the frame of modern day rock and pop, Existensminimum offers a lightspeed trip through modern electro pop, Spiritualized-styled guitar-drone, neo-romantic crooner ballads and anxious deconstructed rock. All the while harkening back to the heady daze of 70s Krautrock's sci-fi explorations and cosmic communal folk, along with the brash noisy pop of England in the late 80s, early 90s. Not that far removed from a Silverbullit/Citizen Bird release...

Fleeting Joys, The
Despondent Transponder
PS, US Flavors of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, The Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth are there, but don't fully explain this shimmering anomaly. Their debut album Despondent Transponder was written, performed, recorded and mixed by the band. Brilliant Californian drummer Matt McCord lends his skills to the project. After hearing Despondent Transponder, legendary Swervedriver drummer, Jez, has pegged the duo for collaboration on their next release. While appreciating the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, it has never been the goal of Fleeting Joys to imitate what they admire. "It is merely a starting point to expand from, experiment with, and go from there. We simply love the experience of being drenched in crashing waves of beautifully distorted chords!" It's from this love that the song-crafting of despondent transponder answers the pop vs. noise riddle with catchy, at times - even happy - melodies and crashing instrumentals that rip through like a cyclone tearing up a trailerpark. "Of recent things to cross this desk, Fleeting Joys is a real delight. The epiphanic Spectorian fog works best on "The Breakup," which plays Rorika's gossamer vocals and symphonic synth lines against John's My Bloody Valentine-style guitar sturm und drang over a stellar melody. - Jackson Griffith, Sacramento News & Review

Ilar, Anders
Ludwijka
PS, UK Ludwijka is the first release on Merck from the renowned Swede Anders Ilar. Some Merck fans may be more familiar with his material recorded for the sister Narita imprint. This release is in the same vein as that material, it hovers around wickedly dark and complex electronics, with complicated beats and programming, but strays from the typical 4/4 dance floor style. The name of the release itself comes from the old spelling of his hometown, Ludvika, which was in use some hundred years ago. This applies to the release because for the source of the tracks, Anders has gone back to his origins, sampling himself from old tapes, including some of the first tracks he ever composed on the piano when he was six years old. He transforms the noises made by animals, nature, humans, instruments and machines into a unique listening experience that takes you back into the Swedish countryside to experience Ludwijka firsthand.

Israelvis
The Israelvis Effect
PS, NORWAY Israelvis arose from the ashes of punk band Angor Wat in 1988 and quickly became of of Norway's most credible alternative bands. They broke through with the critically-acclaimed "Albino Blue" in 1993, which was supported by massive touring in Europe. The Israelvis sound has always been dominated by a sharp guitar hardrock style, with ironic, politically charged lyrics, experimentally merged with other musical influences ranging from punk, jazz, electronica, twin peaks, mambo and other sonic goodies. The bands music has been described as cutting edge, unpredictable, uncompromising and underestimated. In 2005 Israelvis decided to give the usual experimental tendencies a rest, and have recorded a bona fide rock album characterized by the 70's, 80's and 90's, which is The Israelvis Effect.

PS, UK One of the 20th century's most gifted songwriters and a figure as symbolic of Brazil as Gershwin is of America or as Lennon & McCartney are of Britain, Tom Jobim wrote "The Girl from Ipanema" and pioneered bossa nova; his seductive melodies and sophisticated harmonies eventually placed him among the ten most recorded popular composers of all time. Martyn, John
Classics (2XCD)
PS, UK In a world that lacks compassion, John Martyn and his music, is a breath of fresh air. He is an incurable romantic who songs from his heart; no other artist sings with such commitment and emotion. A truly progressive artist John has never been one to stay with a tired and trusted sound, preferring to explore, experiment and break new ground. His trademark melodies and lyrics are in a class of their own and his voice which is steeped in pleasure and pain, joy and fear and expresses emotion like no other. With collaborations from Phil Collins, Dave Gilmour, Levon Helm and Andy Shepperd this is the definitive John Martyn. Scottish born singer-songwriter/guitarist John Martyn began his innovative and expansive career at the age of 17 with a style influenced by American blues artists such as Robert Johnson and Skip James, the traditional music of his homeland, and the eclectic folk of Davey Graham. With the aid of his mentor, traditional singer Hamish Imlach, Martyn began to make a name for himself and eventually moved to London, where he became a fixture at Cousins, the center for the local folk scene that spawned the likes of Bert Jansch, Ralph McTell and Al Stewart. Soon after, he caught the attention of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who made him the first solo white act to join the roster of his reggaebased label. Whether with his characteristic backslap acoustic guitar playing, his effects driven experimental journeys or catalog of excellent songs, John Martyn remains an important and influential figure in both British folk and rock.

co-founding the legendary Ogun label, which documented much of the Brit-jazz scene in the 1970s. His group Isipingo, which could be compared to a smallerscale, more "swinging" take on the kwela-influenced jazz of the Brotherhood, includes six of the greatest of Britain's jazzers of the 1970's & is sure to appeal to the large audience that made Cuneiform's two Brotherhood of Breath albums such big successes! PS, US Argentinean singer Molina was introduced to the American public with the release of her second album, "Segundo". A mixture of acoustic guitars, traditional percussion touches, electronic textures, and her disarming vocals make it one of the most evocative and original albums in recent memory. NPR's "All Things Considered" praised her, as did Entertainment Weekly when it named "Segundo" "Best World Music Album of 2003". "Sounds like Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier covering Nick Drake, whispering luminous folk tunes amid electronic thickets while acoustic guitars and pianos flicker like votive candles" ¿ Entertainment Weekly. 2004's follow-up, "Tres Cosas" was equally revered, as Jon Pareles of the NY Times named it a top ten record of the year, and it won even more fans as diverse as Savath & Savalas, David Byrne, Belle And Sebastian, and Sam Prekop. This is her first new material in over two years and is the first of her albums to be released simultaneously around the world, which should heighten the album's impact.

Montys Loco
Man Overboard
PS, SWEDEN Ultra-sensual art-pop/weird-folk alchemy produced by Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn And John). It's like a free-range, organic version of The Knife or Phil Spector's girlgroup harem, plus it's everything I love about The Concretes, but with a more experimental bent, so comparisons to Bjork aren't too far out. Katapult REVIEW: "The two women that are hiding behind the name Montys Loco have been playing music for over 10 years together. Accordingly to themselves Björn Yttling, who is the producer of these 10 songs, has shown them a new pathway to walk on. And the walk they walk is good. Really good. The music that gets delivered by these two ladies is small pop songs with big words. It's smart, funny and at the same time so distinct and honest with a sexy edge... On "Man Overboard" Anja Bigrells voice sound harsh and elegant at the same time. It reminds me of Anna Ternheim and Karin Dreijer mixed with Victoria Bergsman from The Concretes, at the same time. The spacious keyboard and organ sounds mixed together with the earthly touch of an acoustic guitar creates a Phil Spector vibe that is hard to not like. It's a record that at first comes off as nothing special, but just as a seed takes its time to blossom into a wild colourful lovely flower." CD comes in a spiffy velour/vinyl wallet with a full-color lyric booklet.

Moses, Edwin
The African Gospel Years of Jamal Nafsum
PS, US After the success of two records that received unparalleled critical acclaim in the UK and gold sales in Japan, Edwin Moses are back with The Gospel African Years (siesta 218). Again we have received numerous letters of support from all over the world and accurate narratives of Edwin's vicissitudes in Africa. Some secrets are revealed in this third record, my dear colleagues. Although it is impossible to rewrite the past, the new Edwin Moses is a metaphor of the real Edwin Moses. This archaelogical labor will impress soul connoisseurs and experts, especially those that have recently welcome the rebirth of forgotten idols as Mike James Kirkland or Terry Callier. As we repeat incessantly as a cuckoo does its call, the story behind Edwin is a proof of the ultimate defeat of reason. The Gospel African Years (siesta 218) was recorded by reputed Spanish musicians under the command of geniuses Pedro Vigil and Pablo Errea. This masterpiece was recorded in Gijón and Cádiz by local myth Paco Loco. An amazing children's choir and a fabulous gospel choir will help you to connect to the music of your new spiritual guide. In addition more than 30 musicians have actively contributed. Among them, Gary Louris (via an adaptation of Mahalia Jackson) and Nora Gala who recreates the role of Jasmine Nafsum. These new thirteen songs expose a new fecund stage of Edwin Moses. Do not miss the myriad of arrangements that inject spiritual flair, blues tones and extraordinary rythms (related to traditional African music mixed with gospel) to the record. Gospel and blues blended together in the origin of rock and soul and Edwin could capture this alchemy. Use your sunglasses and a well-rehearsed smile to enjoy the African tour and conversion to Islam of Edwin Moses, now Jamal Nafsum. Ghana, Congo, Angola, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia....

Hybrid (2XCD)
PS, UK Restock. Despite achieving Number 1 singles and albums, selling over 12m records in the process Gary Numan has self-produced almost all of his music and many of his albums are played almost exclusively by him. The result is a widescreen electronic rock album, featuring huge-sounding versions of old favourites such as Down In The Park and Are 'Friends' Electric?, three brand new songs including Crazier which is released as a single 23rd June and an orchestral version of the classic Cars produced by Flood. A 36-piece orchestra also appear on the new song, Ancients, produced by Andy Gray and co-written with Numan. Numan, Gary
Exposure
PS, UK Restock. For a brief span the world belonged to Gary Numan. Then, as the alienated electronic wastelands of Numanoid imagination fell from favour, Gary found himself floundering with little more than a pilot's license and a small but fiercely loyal fan base to support him. Nowadays the hard times are well and truly over and he has a much larger and still intensely loyal legion of metal/goth/industrial fans. What's more he can now count among them such credible luminaries as Beck, Marilyn Manson, Liam Howlett and Damon Albarn and his back catalogue (in sample form) is now helping other acts such as Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden and the Sugababes achieve their own chart goals. Let's face it, Electroclash and bootleg culture is about as hip as you can get in 2002. Who'd have thought it? It is, however, important to note that this new found credibility is not necessarily the most important thing on Gary's mind. Firstly this is a 'best of' not a hits collection and being assembled by a fan of Numan's it gives a more balanced view than the usual record company bandwagon-jumping. Tracks are not chronological but sequenced thoughtfully to allow a sense of Numan the complete artist and while new layers of technology and sophistication now layer his compositions there emerges an odd continuity. Admittedly lyrics have become more assured with experience; compare the bleak sci fi musings of "Are 'Friends' Electric?" or "Remember, I Was Vapour" with the darker and quasi-religious strain running through "My Jesus" and "Dominion Day". Yet the gradual reinvention of Numan as industrial father-figure to Trent Reznor and his ilk has done nothing to remove the essential Numanoid quality of his best work. Instead, he's merely removed the more derivative strains of his early work ("Complex" is pure Eno, while ""She's Got Claws", one of the few examples of Gary in decline, is akin to Japan meeting Bowie in a new romantic karaoke bar) and arrived at a musical landscape that is, most assuredly, 100 percent Numan. Despite his adoption by Kerrang! readers, Gary's music still retains a canny eye for a brooding synth riff ("Pure") and the voice has lost its young plaintive edge to become a much more emotive tool. Witness the improved reworkings of "My Shadow In Vain" and "Everyday I Die". With a new album due next year, this new, improved model of Numan seems intent on building even further on his second coming and paying no lip service whatsoever to paltry nostalgia. It may not be everyone's cup of motor oil, but such dogged individuality deserves to prosper long into the 21st century. TRACK LISTING: Disc 1: 1. Films, 2. I Die: You Die, 3. Are 'Friends' Electric?, 4. Pure, 5. Dead Heaven, 6. Down In The Park, 7. Me! I Disconnect From You, 8. Metal, 9. She's Got Claws, 10. Magic, 11. We Are Glass, 12. Music For Chameleons 12", 13. Peris, Don
Go When the Morning Shineth
PS, US Solo album from INNOCENCE MISSION guitarist has a nostalgic summertime feel. On this mostly instrumental outing, his unique & unmistakable guitar tone dips, soars, and shimmers with tremolo. Like the sea on the album's Polaroid cover, these songs are deep and inviting. A close listen reveals nods to other great melodic songwriters like Paul Simon, Chet Atkins, Lindsey Buckingham and Nick Drake.

Pestrepeller
Isle Of Dark Magick
PS, UK Prepare yourself for this gem of free-improvised-found-sound-collage enriched with dark pagan folky vibes and supernatural horror noise dedicated to HP Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Austin Osman Spare! Most remember Pestrepeller only as the source material for Sonic Boom's (Spacemen 3) Pestrepeller remix album. It's true, while they're a supergroup of sorts and are in their tenth year of existence they've still only released 3 proper albums not including the Sonic Boom remixes. When Pestrepeller does make a sound, they make it count sharing stages with Borbetomagus, David Shea and Alan Turner among others. Pestrepeller consists of long-celebrated illustrator and Wire journalist Savage Pencil, Evan Parker student and ex-Medicine Head member Peter Hope-Evans, comic artist Ed Pinset, cartoonist Harley Richardson and Rob Brown. "A quick trip to a psychedelic plane where Sun Ra's rocksichord pumps up the volume alongside krautrock kozmik couriers Ash Ra Temple, while the long shadow of Dada godfather Marcel Duchamp blots out the sun. The perpetrators are Sav X of Art Attacks/Kray Cherubs/Ether Hogg, cult underground comics artist/writer Ed Pinsent, and guitarist/writer Harley Richardson. -Sympathy Records

Popium
Camp
PS, NORWAY Released in late-2004 "Camp" (2004, Kong Tiki Records) has beenis described by the Norwegian music press as "a solid work of quality pop songwriting", "a classic record full of summer atmosphere", "catchy melodies with delicate popsoul...a classic pop-production". Singer/songwriter Frank Hammersland has long been one of Norway's most accomplished songwriters, drawing influence at an early age from the likes of Elvis Costello and T-Rex. Popium's music shows traces of not only glamrock, but also classic sixties pop, eighties rock and lately a smidgeon of Motown. Fans of The Merrymakers and Popsicle will find plenty to appreciate here! Brand new album expected later this year...

Portal
Gone But Not Forgiven
PS, UK Portal began in 1996 as the home recording project of multi-instrumentalist Scott Sinfield. The vinyl debut in 1998 earned Portal "Single of the Month" in Record Collector magazine and the first of many BBC Radio 1 airplays from legendary DJ John Peel. Over the next eight years, Portal released a series of singles and albums on a variety of independent labels around the world, winning acclaim and support from The Guardian, DJ Magazine and the NME, amongst others. Live dates were few and far between, but those that Portal played saw them alongside the likes of Hood, Piano Magic, Electrelane, Genesis P'Orridge (Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV) and Michael Gira (Swans/Angels of Light). Gone But Not Forgiven collects together long-deleted vinyl tracks, alternative mixes, live recordings, radio session tracks and unreleased studio material from the period 1998-2006. The CD also marks the end of Portal, at least in its present form. Scott will continue to record and perform music as well as being involved in various art projects and running the independent collective and record label Make Mine Music, which he established in 2002 to release music by the likes of Yellow6, July Skies and Epic45, in addition to the majority of Portal's more recent output. The CD is strictly limited to 500 copies, in effect being deleted on the day of release.

Raccoo-oo-oon
Cave of Spirits Forever
PS, US CD reissue of the cdr version that went instantly out of print last year. One of those bands that can somehow shift between seemingly divergent genres, while the whole time keeping a sound very much their own. The disc launches with a speed blasted, noise fueled, psych/punk rocker, slides into nearly grooving free-jazz territory, then into a gorgeous, buzzing/floating/tinkling bliss mantra & that's just the first 3 tracks. The overall sound constantly slips back to the sort of mantric, damaged rock thud these guys are clearly fond of. Limited edition of 1000 copies.
