Dexter’s Moon - Come Rain CD $10.20 15% off (Combat Disc)
The sounds of Swedish septet Dexter’s Moon have been haunting me for many months, so it’s nice to finally make this available. Songs like the title track “Come Rain” and “(F*cked Up) Love Story” have been in heavy rotation for whenever a good mellowing was needed. Filmic folk-pop, with melodica and accordions droning away. Elemental music for stars in the spinning wheel of the sky, music for nightflowers and mushrooms that appear miraculously between dusk and dawn, and for the moon waxing between them. Think Low, Cat Power, Folksongs For The Afterlife, Mazzy Star, Kathleen Edwards…

10lec6
Join Us
PS, US (Pronounced "dis-lec-six"). French disco punk featuring the original drummer of Daft Punk. This is a repressing of their debut 7-inch that was originally released by the band. The awesome lead vocals call to mind Eve Libertine of Crass. Emi (vocalist) emits such passion and conviction that it's hard to turn away. The music recalls fellow Crass label mates Dirt mixed with the rhythmic collisions of Essential Logic. Picture the more dance-y Crass songs and you may have a starting point. 10lec6 is very rhythm-based, but also very aggressive.

PS, US May 5th, 2000 was supposed to be the end of existence as we know it according to many scientists. There's even a band dedicated to soundtracking the once-impending world demise. Feat. members of CATTLE DECAPITATION (Metal Blade) and CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION. Digitally remastered from the original source tapes, the album comprises a range of sonic paranoia that perfectly escorts listeners into nonexistence.

Baker, Chet
On The Road: Live In L.A. & Boston
PS, UK Having recently broken away from Gerry Mulligan's innovative quartet, newly-crowned poll-winning trumpet star Chet Baker and his own Quartet, featuring pianist Russ Freeman are captured at peak performance on the stages of L.A.'s Tiffany Club and Boston's famed Storyville. So successful was Chet's booking at Tiffany's that he was held over for six straight weeks. Similarly, Chet's s cool crystaline signature sound resulted in returned bookings in Boston. As with the Tiffany recordings, the quartet's stints at George Wein's Storyville Club in Boston details the group's growing maturity. Fact: this is the sound of a truly confident artist enjoying the first full flush of solo fame. "Almost everything about this two-disc compilation from Roy Carr and his Giant Steps label is irresistibly cool." --THE GUARDIAN Tracks: CD One Chet Baker (Trumpet, Boo-Bam*) / Russ Freeman (Piano) / Carson Smith (Bass) / Bob Neel (Drums) / The Tiffany Club, Los Angeles. Bang! Bang!
Decked Out
PS, US Swaggering guitar & bass are punctuated with the dueling male/female vocal narratives of Jack Flash & Gretta Fine. Pouting & moody at times, Decked Out's cohesive narrative echoes the obsessive & frustrated sides of desire & sexuality, while maintaining addictive pop hooks. Highlights include a fist-pumping dance-floor anthem, as well as a cheeky genderreversal cover of the Gun Club's "Sex Beat". Well-crafted instrumentation & universal lyrical elements call to mind influences like Rezillos, B52s & Talking Heads & more modern acts like Epoxies, Lost Sounds & Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Beirut
Gulag Orkestar
PS, US While sounding like the work of an entire Balkan gypsy orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads & upbeat marches, is actually the work of 19 year old Albuquerque native Zack Condon w/an assist from Jeremy Barnes (NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL & HAWK & A HACKSAW). There are no guitars on this album; instead, horns, violins, cellos, ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiel, drums, tambourines, congas, organs, pianos, clarinets and accordions all build and break around Condon's deep-voiced crooner vocals, swaying to the Eastern European beats like a drunken twelve-member carnival band.

Bell, Maggie
Queen Of The Night
PS, US Maggie Bell's beautiful voice rings true in this, her first solo album, originally released in 1974. Here Bell (who first gained notoriety with Stone The Crows) is accompanied by many talented musicians of the period, including Steve Gadd on drums and guitarists Cornell Dupree, Reggie Young, Chuck Rainey and Barry Goldberg. Featuring stellar versions of John Prine's "Souvenirs," JJ Cale's "After Midnight" (which is even better than Eric Clapton's version), a very intimate version of "A Woman Left Lonely," famously covered by Janis Joplinon Pearl, and a beautiful and intense "As The Years Go Passing By." This Akarma reissue also features a superb live version of Free's celebrated "Wishing Well" as a bonus track. Maggie Bell is the greatest Scottish soul-rock singer of all time and this album is precious testimony to that fact.

Black Heart Procession
Spell, The
PS, US "The Spell" is the most fitting name yet for a Black Heart Procession record. Spells are cast over a person, a love affair, a nation, a world; they enchant and entrap, disorient and delude. They're the heart of this release, and there's no better word to describe the spooky intoxication of the band's sound. Theirs is the sound of driving at night across the West. Like the wide-open landscape, this is music that knows how to be both desolate and lush. Here, a song's 6/8 beat will pull you into a moody seductive waltz and next, the violin and piano evoke the house band of a lonesome cabaret with the lights turned low. Then the strings stop their mournful crying and shift into a propulsive thrum, and now we've got the pedal to the metal and we're heading straight down the open road into a cinematic twilight.

Black Time
Midnight World
PS, US The point is talent over ability, ideas over proficiency, energy over competence-action, time, and vision. Add some musical instruments to this confusion and the resulting mess is "Black Time" -shambolic but passionate, hollerin' and wailin' at the dying of the red light. If you pay attention to zines, blogs and websites dedicated to sub-underground rock, then no doubt you are aware that Black Time have been getting favorably compared to Crime, Pussy Galore, The Electric Eels, The Cramps and The Fall. A string of hopelessly limited edition vinyl 7"s and 12"s have stoked the fire. The hype is justified in this case, as Midnight World is the perfect marriage of chug-a-lug, primeval drumming, opaque layers of guitars, new wave cinema references, '60s and '70s punk, lo-fi static and overwrought vocals from frontman Lemmy Caution. The best UK export since The Country Teasers.

Blossom Toes
If Only For A Moment
PS, US Brian Godding and Jim Cregan are the artists behind the Blossom Toes' splendid second album. Their sound has changed a bit since their first album -- their compositions are more mature and a more direct California psych influence can be felt, with intricate guitar passages and a disjointed sound worthy of Captain Beefheart. Their instrumental approach is also more decisive and the lyrics reflect the state of social turbulence synonymous with the late sixties. This band deserves more recognition, given their originality, and is a shining example of British psych. 180 gm.

Since her stunning European-only debut, "Spending Time With Morgan" in 2003, she has been generating full houses on her frequent tours in Europe and winning numerous musical awards, including Grammys in both Norway and Sweden. This is her second album and much of its content is a reflection of the year following the release of her debut. Features the stunning duet "Song No. 6" with singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. But outside the "official" VU there was also an uncut version of the virus, incubated behind the slum walls of the 1960s Lower East Side, & maintained live in the liquid nitrogen of these insolently recorded reel-to-reel audiotapes, RECORDED AND PRODUCED BY JOHN CALE & now available in this massive 3xCD boxed set.

C. brings together versatile German multi-instrumentalist/bandleader Gebhard Ullman with the 20-year musical partnership of Fonda and Stevens, the core of another long-standing all-star ensemble, the Fonda/Stevens Group. C. C's revolving cast of high-profile drummer/composers has included Matt Wilson and Han Bennink, in addition to Hemingway and Schuller, who has since held down the position for the past 4 years. Coral Sea, The
Volcano And Heart
PS, US Remastered! Soaring debut album from Santa Barbara atmospheric pop outfit. "The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea's debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo's melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead's impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. Imagine a stratospherically skillful space-pop quartet with an entire string section behind it, and you'll be on their wavelength, but for me it all comes down to the voice. Frontman/founder Rey Villalobos' vocals steal the show: a luminous, sometimes androgynous croon, a silvery warble, without a glimmer of pretension...and here my closest comparison of the moment is Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue (but Rey's voice is leagues richer and less dependent on effects) and Parasol's very own Kevin Tihista (with a bunch more Thom Yorke than KT's ever going to show us), especially in the lyrics and phrasing departments.

Country Teasers
Empire Strikes Back
PS, US Eighth LP from UK chroniclers of the culturally perverse. The band's humor remains as strangely contradictory as ever, with Wallers juggling a cast of persona as far-flung as P.G. Wodehouse, Ice Cube, Winston Churchill, & Bill Hicks. Is "The Empire Strikes Back" a concept album about race, England, and Star Wars, or did the band just find something unwholesomely amusing about the juxtaposition of fascism and Industrial Light and Magic?

Daedelus
Denies the Day's Demise
PS, US Electronic producer and sound archivist Daedelus returns with a new fifteen-track dancefoor masterpiece, Daedelus Denies the Day's Demise. Tweaking the controls of his magic music box once again, he cranks out a set of techno-inspired programming infused with Brazilian bossa nova, complete with shakers, hand claps, congas, and percussion. Daedelus has a knack for finding the hidden common denominator between modern electronic music and the sounds of yesteryear. His productions often contrast IDM-styled cut-ups with classic arrangements from the '30s and '40s. With a string of releases on cutting edge labels like Plug Research, Hefty and Eastern Development, Daedelus has refined a style that has no imitators. Whether the music hits you through sweaty club speakers or a comfy pair of headphones, you know at once who you're hearing. Operating out of So-Cal, Daedelus also incorporates a healthy dose of hip-hop into the mix. He frequently collaborates with L.A.-based emcee BUSDRIVER, who guests here along with fellow underground luminaries MF DOOM, ABSTRACT RUDE, MADLIB & HIGH PRIEST (ANTI-POP CONSORTIUM).

David & Jonathan
The Best of David & Johnathan
PS, UK As song writers, between 1965 and 1973, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway wrote 25 UK top ten hits, plus many others around the world, for the likes of the Fortunes, Cliff Richard, Hollies, Blue Mink, the Drifters and one of the biggest 'in the world ever' as Virgin would say, in I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing. As artists, Cook and Greenaway's alter ego David and Jonathan 's own biggest hit was a cover of the Beatles Michelle, which made no.11 in the Uk, and no.18 in the US. Their Beatles link stemmed from being signed by producer George Martin to his Air Productions stable, producing the majority of their recordings during a peak period between 1965 and 1968. It yielded two more international hits in their own songs Lovers Of The World Unite , and How Bitter The Taste Of love. Musically Cook and Greenaway recorded in a similar vein to the Ivy League with close harmonies over beat backings. Their vocal skills were further in demand as session singers, such as backing the first Paul and Barry Ryan hits, Peter Sellers on his memorable take on the Beatles A Hard Days Night, and the lead on the title song to the cult movie Modesty Blaise. During their period as David and Jonathan, Cook and Greenaway recorded early versions of many of their songs that became hits for others, such as You've Got Your Troubles, This Golden Ring (The Fortunes) , Softly Whispering I Love You (The Congregation) , Somethings Gotten Hold of My Heart (Gene Pitney) , Green Grass (Gary Lewis & Playboys) . All the hits and versions of hit songs for others, mentioned above, are present on this new and comprehensive 25 track compilation compiled with the assistance of messers Cook and Greenaway.

Using humor and sorrow as a personal healing device on this twelve-song CD, Dawson continues to expose the subtle and sometimes serious pains we all face, in order to temper them with understanding and laughter. "It's not what Kimya says, but how she says it. She's got a knack for playing with words. In the end you want to laugh and cry and probably hug someone. Kimya delivers deeply personal, uncompromising songwriting tucked into intelligent and clever lyrics" - Under The Radar.

PS, USWith jury-rigged equipment & fuzzed-out distortion laden vocal elements DS genre-smash through their U.S. debut with a fierce intensity that is so joyously abrasive your finger becomes itchy on repeat over & over. Originally formed in Sydney, Australia comprised of U.S.-repatriate visual artist Beau Velasco & gifted engineer Johnny Siera, both of whom sing blistering co-lead & play guitar against ingeniously crafted post-casiotone backing tracks, reminiscent of digitized robot nightmares. Sometimes harmonizing, other times curdlling with raw emotive vigor. Will appeal to fans of Japanther, xbxrx, Lighting Bolt, & early Cibo Matto. With timelessly catchy mantras like this, the music manages to speak to all ages of the disenchanted & disenfranchised.

Drake, Bob
What Day Is It
PS, US PITCHFORK 8.6!!! Originally self-released. Exhibits Bob's characteristic traits: golden fingers, hi-wire vocals, eyebrow-raising country-picking, loose-but-right-in-the-pocket drums, eccentric chord inversions & a bass-guitar sound to make you want to work like crazy or quit. Sitting happily with the fantasy "Yes" Euro-progressive surface is the rather more substantial depth of a bluegrass & rooted-rock American culture; an almost unique combination & one hard to imitate (or even imagine, until you hear Bob do it). But then, Bob has always marched to the beat of a different drummer, manifestly careless of the fashion or of the easier, more superficial aspects of the music he has absorbed.

Human Body EP, The
PS, US This EP finds Brighton, England's band at a perfect mid-point between the guitar-pop rush of their first album (2002's "Holes In The Wall") and the studied, symphonic arrangements of their second (2003's "The American Adventure"). These seven tracks (plus a US bonus track) are ESP's best work to date. Most notably, "Cold World" skips along like a Paul McCartney-penned Strokes track and "Everybody Wants" is a sweeping epic of a song that punctuates the band's enduring ambition.

The songs here are pure hitsville and could've worked on an early Cheap Trick record and a mid-period Bowie album. Old Creem magazine writer Jeffrey Morgan often cites this band in his current writings, using them as a barometer in judging other rock bands. No one ever comes
close.

Existensminimum
Last Night My Head Tried To Explode And I Wrote Everything Down
PS, SWEDEN First full-length from Swedish studio-wizard/uber-producer Magnus Henriksson AKA Existensminimum, who's also a member of Moneybrother. On the heels of two amazing singles ("From Me To You" and "Running Down Everyone") this album is even more surreal and adventuresome. Looking beyond the frame of modern day rock and pop, Existensminimum offers a lightspeed trip through modern electro pop, Spiritualized-styled guitar-drone, neo-romantic crooner ballads and anxious deconstructed rock. All the while harkening back to the heady daze of 70s Krautrock's sci-fi explorations and cosmic communal folk, along with the brash noisy pop of England in the late 80s, early 90s. Not that far removed from a Silverbullit/Citizen Bird release...

Ok-Oyot System
PS, US This is Otieno Jagwasi & Onyango Wuod Omari of ORCHESTRA EXTRA SOLAR AFRICA & Ian Eagleson & Alex Minoff of WEIRD WAR & GOLDEN. The musicians met as a result of Ian's doctoral research on Kenyan music. Since 2000, Otieno had been assisting Ian in documenting benga. A unique sounding record that arose from musicians from different circumstances, but who, at the same time, have something in common: they play in electric guitar bands & perform in bars & nightclubs. They've worked hard to release their own music over the past 15 years, often to little recognition. Not a high-profile intern'l collaboration of the sort that would be featured at Starbucks checkout counters. Rather, it is based on a deep connection between the musicians, &, as a result, has a very honest sound reflecting this experience.

Fax
Primario
PS, MEXICO FAX returns with his third full length for Static Discos, a new collection of songs that signal an alternate sound path in the FAX template. Whereas FAX's previous albums were inspired by discrete minimal techno and microhouse, PRIMARIO focuses on a slow rocking, almost ambient, low end invisible soundtrack full of lights and shades. The stance on the new album is a meditative construction of tracks which feature and array of contributions by Alex Ayuli (A.R. Kane), Fernando Corona (Murcof), Ignacio Chavez (Kobol) and Kate Simko (Detalles), producing a beautiful collection of music that slides in between the sound works of later Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis and the collaborations of Burnt Friedman with Jaki Liebezeit. FAX's electronic signature sound is still intact on PRIMARIO, but slowed down for maximum effect, creating a rich and lush album full of dubby atmospheric tones, whispered rhythms and melodic oceanic songs.

Four King Cousins, The
Introducing...
PS, UK At last the re-release of one of the best and rarest albums of the sunshine pop / light psychedelic harmony genre of the late sixties. The Four King Cousins 'introducing' is one of the last undiscovered masterpieces of that golden age. Produced, arranged, and conducted by the great David Axelrod under the pseudonym Lex de Azevedo. The already seductive four female voices are charged still further by Axelrod's characteristic sensuality. The Four King Cousins covers of period material such as Bacharach-David's 'This Girl's in Love with You', Brian Wilson's 'God Only Knows' and RogerNichols' 'Love So Fine' are as good as any contemporary recordings, comparing favorably with giants such as Harper's Bizarre, the Association and the Free Design.

Gnac
Twelve Sidelong Glances
PS, UK New Release!! 17 tracks. A brand new studio album from Gnac, the sophisticated instrumental project from Mark Tranmer. (The name is pronounced knee-ak, as in the last syllable of cognac.) Twelve Sidelong Glances is the fourth album by Gnac, whose previous albums are Friend Sleeping (1999), Biscuit Barrel Fashion (2001) and the singles compilation evens, as well as a more guitar orientated album as Mark Tranmer, Scoop of Ice Cream Moon (2004). Biscuit Barrel Fashion was released on the Poptones label, and declared album of the month by Russian Playboy magazine. The 17 tracks on Twelve Sidelong Glances follow on in the tradition of the cult Poptones-released set Biscuit Barrel Fashion, with imaginary mid-week mid-afternoon murder mystery music (Midgley Moor), electronica melodica (Green With Fright), and vespertine guitar (As Night Falls Upon Us) among the instrumental genres. Also included are two themes commissioned by Neen Scene artists, including Vanessa Beecroft's Wedding, first performed at her wedding ceremony in Italy. Mark Tranmer also writes the music for the Montgolfier Brothers, who released their third album All My Bad Thoughts in October 2005, and who frequently tour in Europe. Mark Tranmer is currently recording with Ian Masters (ex-Pale Saints, Spoofed Hybrid) on their collaborative project Wingdisk, and writing soundtrack music. Also available: gnac * friend sleeping (vespertine, 1999), gnac * sevens (rocket girl, 1999), gnac * biscuit barrel fashion (poptones, 2001), gnac * soviet bureau (soyuz, 2004) - russia only compilation. + mark tranmer * scoop of ice-cream moon (kooky, 2004), the montgolfier brothers * 17 stars (vespertine, 1999; re-issued poptones, 2000), the montgolfier brothers * the world is flat (poptones, 2002), the montgolfier brothers * all my bad thoughts.

Holland, Jolie
Springtime Can Kill You
PS, US This 12-track song-cycle is a crossroads where haunting meets joyful; a voice from the heavens singing stories of the underworld. Holland's songs rise and fall like heavy eyelids and convey the peace between asleep and awake, creating a special place for you to be. Sounds from past and present-tense waltz together to a never ending melody that flickers between folk, jazz, blues, and pop. Jolie's lyrics conjure characters and situations one might find in the surrealistic celluloid of Jim Jarmusch. As with all good dreams, there is an anything-goes spirit leading the way. Its this level of bravado that prompted All Music Guide to describe Holland's sound as "a listening experience that is singular, startling, and soulful."

Kane, Jonathan
I Looked At The Sun
PS, US His follow-up to the rollicking, majestic, and critically acclaimed debut, "February" is a bare-knuckled knock-out punch. "Rocks! Great Southern-fried looped blues-rock. Like Steve Reich if all he listened to was Muddy Waters and Zeppelin" - Dusted. "Down-home grooves shine with an orchestral, massed-guitar luster that's often associated with Glenn Branca and Kane's frequent collaborator Rhys Chatham. Layered electric and acoustic sounds create overtones that trick the listener into hearing non-existent organs and harmonicas. In place of the mind-boggling beats for which he's known, Kane underpins these drones with a deceptively simple, forcefully executed shuffle. His swinging opuses exude bright, earthy euphony instead of dark, cerebral dissonance. Rarely does the avant-garde rock this hard" - Time Out NY.

Lee, Rita
Hoje O Primeiro Dia Do Resto Da Sua Vida
PS, UK Available/in stock Wednesday, May 10. The fabulous Rita Lee rocketed to fame as a member of the wildest alumni (and now, bizarrely, the best known) of Tropicalia, Os Mutantes! Their amazing albums and controversial antics set out a stall for Tropicalia in no uncertain terms and the widespread rediscovery of their work in the '90s and their current reformation (after 30 years of not talking) continue to fan the flames of the myth. After Os Mutantes' early groundbreaking albums, Rita Lee decided to create her own space by launching a concurrent career as a solo singer. Unfortunately, her slightly wayward Rogerio Duprat-arranged debut failed to launch a straight pop career as well as neglecting almost everything people loved about Os Mutantes. After going back to the drawing board in 1972, Rita recruited her Os Mutantes colleagues Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista as well as other members of the music/art commune in which they all lived, to produce the follow-up. As different as day is from night, written by the original Os Mutantes trio of Rita, Arnaldo and Sergio and 'produced and directed' by Arnaldo, this second album is a masterpiece of tropicalia/psychedelia with the spooky, comedown atmosphere of "Smiley Smile" to boot. To all intents and purposes, a virtual 'lost' fifth Os Mutantes album with Rita the dominant force. An amazing return to the perfect organised chaos of their first two albums and a total must have. With the resurgant and growing interest in the Tropicalia movement and Brasilian rock music, you cannot afford to miss this undiscovered gem!

"Amanda and Joe Ziemba are a married rock duo who'll never be as big as The White Stripes but have a better sweater drawer. Joe sings punk, Amanda sings pretty, finishing each other's lines" - Spin. "The songs are played with go-for-broke ferocity: Joe tears at the syllables, Amanda crushes the beats, and yet the melodies never melt despite the heated environs. The songs are as sturdy and resilient as the characters in Ziemba's narratives. Hanging on for dear life as the world blitzes past in two-minute bursts" - Chicago Tribune. "The Ziembas never sound like just two people: they play tight power-pop as if they had an extra person or two. In fact, they sound closer to The Spinanes than to The White Stripes, and closer still to twice-their-size groups like Weezer" - Pitchfork.

London, Julie
Julie Is Her Name
PS, UK Yes THE album which single handed launched the Torch Singer genre...and opened the door for every imperfect but sexy vocalist since! The most remarkable thing about Julie London is remarkable indeed: that she used her erotic persona not so much to interpret songs as to change the nature of them to become something other than when sung by anyone else. She used her breathy, sexy, sultry voice not to sing a version of a song that could compete with someone else's on a scale of good to better to best, but to change it's meaning! This, her first album from 1955 set out her stall for all time; soft eroticism and single entendre... with sparse accompaniment for a late night groove that has been hard for generations to resist. With Barney Kessel's muted guitar and Ray Leatherwood's subtle bass the only sound apart from Julie's own bedroom whisper... just try to resist! One of the most erotic albums of all time - sounding even more 'breathe in your ear' than ever with Rev-Ola! Wonderfully packaged with pictures of the sultry Miss London and full on notes! This is a must and no self-respecting collection should be without it.

The music, as on all the releases in Kawabata's Inui series, is intensely personal and introspective, with long, softly focussed tracks featuring acoustic stringed instruments from around the globe (including violin, sarangi, oud, sitar, bouzouki, lyra, shou, and nei). French filmmaker, musician and longtime Acid Mothers Temple collaborator Audrey Ginestet lends her crystal voice to the album opener, "Shin." Their debut album for Static Discos, 'Negative', is a concept piece which transmutes techno sounds into a backward mesh of avant dance aesthetics. In late 2005, Comedy Central Records released a 3-CD + DVD Invite Them Up set. Recorded live at Piano's in New York City in October of 2005, En Garde, Society! is Eugene's second full-length solo comedy album with DVD supplement, and his first for Sub Pop Records. Morricone, Ennio
Morricone In Love
PS, UK Here we see the genius of Ennio Morricone as evidenced by the collection of melodic, romantic themes that comprise 'Morricone In Love' Flooding his music with feeling, the maestro is time and again able to inspire from his musicians performances of extraordinary emotional intensity. Often a Morricone soundtrack will elevate an otherwise modest film to an unfathomable artistic status and 'Love Sequence 1' from the obscure 'Crescete e Moltiplicatevi' is a case in point; a wonderfully sensuous composition that open's the album with the loveliest of vocals from the unique Edda Dell'Orso. Then 'Una Donna Da Ricordare (A Woman To Remember)' from the little known 'Maddalena' bursts with charm before we reach more familiar territory with 'Messico e Irlanda' from 'Giu La Testa (a fistful of dynamite)' one of Morricone's greatest soundtracks; where James Coburn recalls in flashback and with some sentimentality his earlier life in Ireland. Morricone's music to support this famous scene is wonderful. Simply hauntingly magical. Moving on, the composer delivers an appropriately melancholic theme for the tragic 'Verushka' and in 'D'amore si muore (for love one dies)' deals effortlessly with obsession, "I don't love you, I adore you. I'll only be happy when you're dead". 'Morricone in love' is a sensitive, dreamlike experience. Following 'Psichedelico Jassistico' and 'Morricone High' (mod psychedelia) and 'Morricone kill' (the spaghetti western) in the series of themed editions of the maestro's work.

Morricone, Ennio
Morricone High: The Trippier Side Of The Morricone Genius
PS, UK 'Morricone High' showcases the composer's work for Italian psychedelic and art movies of the late sixties & early seventies. Ennio Morricone's beautiful melodies are decorated by Edda Dell'Orso's spacious wordless vocals; 'Scusi, Facciamo L'Amore?' (with the harmony singers I Cantori Moderni) (about the travails of a Neapolitan gigolo), 'Le Foto Proibite Di Una Signora Per Bene' (sex and crime Italian style) 'Veruschka' (model on a psychedelic trip) and 'La Donna Invisible' (arty Mediterranean love triangle) are all sublime examples of the composer in his pomp. Eventually the layers of sensuality give way to the atonal but no less refined, 'Notte E Bambole' from the weird, dreamlike 'The Short Night Of The Glass Dolls' (about catalepsy in art deco Prague) and the equally intense '1970' for Dario Argento's Giallo 'Il Gatto A Nove Code' starring Karl Malden as a blind writer of crossword puzzles who stumbles on a murderous plot. excuse me, let's make love? / between the sheets / take me now / to the altar and back / a lidia (jazz version) / allegretto per signora / amore come dolore / le foto proibite di una signora per bene / secondo intermezzino pop / la bamola / astratto 1 / le fotographie / ritratto d'autore / la moda / notte e bambole / 1970.

Morricone, Ennio
Morricone Kill: Spaghetti Western Magic from the Maestro
PS, US In composing the scores for the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone with their sparse arrangements, eerie tunes and unorthodox instrumentation (bells, church organs, harmonicas, slashing Spanish & electric guitars), Ennio Morricone at once revolutionised film music and from as far away as his base in Rome made the American western his own. Morricone's theme for 'The Good The Bad & The Ugly' is arguably the most famous piece of music ever recorded for film. Director and composer are inseparable; the coordination of action and music such as to prompt some scholars to compare Leone's films to opera; images and sounds that are rich, solemn and often startling. On 'Morricone Kill' the achingly beautiful melodies for Leone's 'A Fistful Of Dynamite' establish the magical Morricone atmosphere; the programme comprising three beautiful cuts from this film along with selections from lesser known westerns all of which are charged with extraordinary music. Sergio Sollima's 'Resta Dei Conti (The Big Gundown)' is generally considered to be the finest spaghetti western not directed by Leone and stars the splendid Lee Van Cleef; Van Cleef emerging from retirement to become (along with Clint Eastwood) the leading name of the genre and one of the ten biggest box office draws in Europe. Joseph Cotton stars in Sergio Corbucci's 'I Crudeli'. Franco Nero and Jack Palance in both 'Il Mercenario' and 'Vamos' a Matar Companeros' and the immense Orson Welles is colonel cooscorro, the chief of police, in 'Tepepa' (Blood and Guns). James Coburn and Rod Steiger combine famously in 'A Fistful Of Dynamite' and Henry Fonda, who years earlier had starred in the prodigious 'once upon a time in the west', returns to the genre for 'My Name Is Nobody' Sergio Leone's biographer Prof. Christopher Frayling's quotation about the stereo effect of the spaghetti western perfectly captures the mood, "one speaker is a fairy story, the other, brutal and nasty. A fabulous combination". L'arena from Il Mercenario also featured in part two of Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill' Tradimento Primo from Tepepa... They have a feel for common anxiousness, desperation, fear, vulnerability, & adventure people feel when hungry for love. Energy & wit! Some organ & acoustic guitar are added for more texture. These are yet more winning examples of their might which deserve to be played all over the country wherever there are radios available...especially in diners that have great milkshakes & creative ways of preparing fast food. Motorpsycho
Black Hole/Blank Canvas [2CD]
PS, GERMANY Notorious Norwegian psych-pop-prog-rock juggernaut's new album is finally here! Since Motorpsycho's last official album 'It's Love Cult' (2002) our beloved trio shrank to a duo with the departure of their longtime drummer, Hakon Gebhardt. The remaining members, guitarist Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan and bassist Bent Saether, forge forever onwards, both continuing to share vocal duties and Bent proving to be an extremely accomplished drummer/percussionist. Not surprisingly, the magick of Motorpsycho prevails. 'Black Hole/Blank Canvas' harkens back to the band's early monumental guitar-rock manifestations and the majestic rock of multiple early nineties scenes (think Swervedriver) are well represented here, without sacrificing their affection for sixties-styled Beach Boys harmonies, the seventies' Cosmic Americana and jam band action, and the eighties' Paisley Underground. With two discs there's a little bit of everything, and possibly more than one kitchen sink. MOJO Magazine "Their yearly waxings still manage to encapsulate their dazzling spectrum of psych rock sound: West Coast pop, Sonic Youth, post-Rubber Soul Beatles, Blue Afternoon-era Tim Buckley, all ages of Floyd. While there's plenty of history here, it's always re-envisaged by fresh eyes... Motorpsycho have got the musical chops, they've got a brilliant, bizarre way with songcraft (think Super Furries), all they require is your attention."

M's, The/Dr. Dog
Split
PS, US The M's and Dr. Dog are going to be two of the hottest young bands of 2006. With tours with Of Montreal, Archer Prewitt, Clap You Hands Say Yeah, and The National in the works, both groups will be maintaining high profiles throughout the year. The M's released their debut Polyvinyl album "Future Women" just last month. Dr. Dog are entering the studio to record the follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Easy Beat". "The four M's call Chicago home, but with their fuzzy riffs and psychedelic melodies, they could be mistaken for a bunch of British tunesmiths by the names of Ray Davies, Damon Albarn, Marc Bolan, and John Lennon" - Spin. "Not that any great band really comes from anywhere or anything, but HOLY FUCK where did these guys [Dr. Dog] come from?" - Fader.

Mystery Jets
Flotsam And Jetsam
PS, US This five-song mini album combines some of their more combustible singles with some other tracks that display their more oddball leanings. None of these songs will be on the upcoming debut full-length, out later this year. They represent British pop at its most invigoratingly weird, and they're hotly tipped to be THE story coming out of the SxSW festival this year.

O Williams, Wendy
Bump n Grind
PS, UK The first ever DVD to feature one of the most controversial and much loved female punk rockers of all time Wendy O Williams. As the lead singer of the infamous Plasmatics, Wendy O. Williams emerged as one of the most notorious figures on the American punk scene; dubbed "the queen of shock rock," her on-stage theatrics were the stuff of underground legend. Often clad in little more than strips of electrical tape covering her nipples, the raspy-voiced Williams earned a cult following for her on-stage antics, which included blowing up cars, sawing guitars in half, and setting equipment on fire; the Plasmatics behaviour frequently made headlines and gained fans. Williams also posed nude for several men's magazines, and the Plasmatics were banned in London. Relations within the band were strained however, and after 1982's Coup d'Etat the singer went solo. Williams first teamed with Motörhead's Lemmy to record a cover of the Tammy Wynette classic "Stand by Your Man"; in 1984, she returned with WOW, her first full-length effort. Kommander of Kaos followed in 1986, and Ultrafly and the Hometown Girls Deffest! and Baddest!, a rap record, arrived in 1988. After 1989's Plasmatics reunion outing Maggots: The Record, Williams essentially retired from music. On April 8, 1998 Williams committed suicide; she was just 48 years old. Wendy O Williams name and legacy live on amongst her many fans and "Bump n Grind" will be a must see for all of them. The DVD features a full live show from her October 1985 UK tour.

Paik
Monster of the Absolute
PS, US It is their particular incantations, evoking warm melodic portraits amongst a firestorm, which truly sets them apart. Few bands are as adept at evoking the inherent symmetry in otherwise clashing emotions & it is this wedding of sonic disparity simultaneously, i.e. without the alternating loud/quiet crutch utilized by so many post-Slint/Mogwai instrumental acts, that is so breathtaking. Oozing forth with a beautiful drone passage of tightly woven feedback & mouth harp, distorted bass & barreling drums augmented by tympani & tambourine lay a solid foundation for chiming guitar lines to cut through the din.

Pelt
Skullfuck/Bestio Tergum
PS, US New pressing of the extremely limited edition live CD previously attainable only on the band's 2006 European tour. Contrary to the Grateful Dead reference in the title, Skullfuck is a tight recording of a single, intense November 2005 performance from NYC's Knitting Factory. The set begins with an epic group arrangement of Jack Rose's "Calais To Dover," with Rose's 12-string shadowed by Mike Gangloff's fiddle, and the thick drone of Mikel Dimmick and Pat Best's harmonium and srutis. The three-part "Bestio" suite follows, with the group moving to Tibetan bowls and gongs, building up a huge sheet of sound which peaks in a brief "encore" of wild gong smashing. New edition is packaged in a gatefold "eco-wallet" with cover art designed by fabric & fiber-artist Emily Keown.
