"I LIKED IT SO MUCH I BOUGHT THE COMPANY!"

Every so often a band comes around that re-affirms my faith in pop music. Years ago it was Wolfie, then Bikeride, more recently it’s been The Soundtrack of Our Lives and a couple of weeks ago it was Unbunny. When I first heard “Black Strawberries” I was stunned -- what a great pop record. Then I found out it was this guy Jarid Del Deo who had been stopping by Parasol on a regular basis for weeks – a local pop band? Wow. “Black Strawberries” is equal parts Matthew Sweet, Neutral Milk Hotel and Neil Young. It will definitely be on my Top 10 for the year and will be one of the great discoveries in the vast Parasol library.

Unbunny’s “Black Strawberries” was recorded by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla (who also plays piano on one track). Joining Jarid on this venture is James Ess and Steve Haruch. Jarid’s next CD is being recorded for Parasol’s own Hidden Agenda in part by Adam Schmitt with Paul Chastain (Velvet Crush) on bass and our co-worker Roy Ewing (Very Secretary, Braid) on drums. Unfortunately (for Urbana-Champaign), Jarid has moved back to New Hampshire where he will finish the recordings. I am lucky to have met Jarid before he moved and to hear what a great musician he is. I am sorry I never got to see Jarid, Paul and Roy play as Unbunny -- maybe someday.

So, I guess I didn’t really “buy the company” but instead am lucky enough to have Unbunny release their next record on Hidden Agenda. Watch for it in your Parasol shopping cart early 2004.
