Staff pick of the week...
This week...Michael picks it!
I
love the staff pick concept. We here at Parasol have the
opportunity and privilege to hear promos, advance releases
and imports by little known artists and sometimes we discover
albums that
we would have never heard otherwise. All previous staff picks
chosen by my colleagues were titles outside the Parasol Label
Group. It’s a good policy because YOU want to know
that if WE say we like it, we really like it. I wrote up
a totally different staff pick and realized I DON’T
LIKE IT AS MUCH AS I LIKE THIS SUKILOVE ALBUM on Hidden Agenda.
This Sukilove album is going to be toward
the top of my year-end list and I want you to know about it
now. Some reviewer described Sukilove as a mix of Sgt. Peppers
and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and that’s the most accurate
I’ve
read. I think there’s some T-Bone Burnett and Daniel
Lanois touches here but the whole does sound a bit like Wings
through
an Americana prism. Add sharp wit plus unexpected melodic turns
and you have a difficult to categorize debut full-length conceived
by Belgian Pascal Deweze. The band will be touring with Bettie
Serveert this autumn and has a spot on the Parasol Night bill
at this
year’s CMJ marathon. An upcoming Starbuck’s/Hear
Music sampler includes Sukilove’s “Hang On” amidst
tracks by Cat Power, Clem Snide, Yo La Tengo, The Jayhawks
and Nada Surf. Sukilove is a perfect fit with that group, and
my
Staff Pick o’ the week.
