When
I was in New York last week for CMJ I bought a CD compilation
titled Zigzag: 20 Junkshop Soft Rock Singles. It includes early ‘70s
tracks from underknown British soft poppers like Clifford T.
Ward, Neil MacArthur (pseudonym for the Zombies’ Colin Blunstone),
Mike Hurst, Brian Protheroe, and 15 others. JACKPOT! The next
day Parasol artist Mark Bacino introduced me to the
2003 musical complement, Josh Rouse’s new album, 1972.
The title track begins “She was feelin’ 1972/Groovin’ to
a Carole King tune,” which becomes the foundation for
an album of folk and pop of the 70's. There’s a hint
of the Phoenix “United” production stylings though
Rouse opts for a more organic approach, most evident on 1972’s
standout song “James.” Upbeat string and woodwind
arrangements that could’ve adorned a Curtis Mayfield
soundtrack recording belie the lyrics about an alcoholic who
leaves his wife and child to be alone. I love a breezy weeper.
Produced by Brad Jones, 1972 takes you there.
