Staff pick of the week...
This week...Angie picks it!
As
a long time friend, and former band mate of Matt Freidburger
(Corndolly/Liquorette),
some of you may think that there is
bias in my staff pick…well, maybe. I was very excited
about the Fiery Furnaces cd before it came out (never having
heard it, because my promised copy from Matt never arrived)…When
my copy finally arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by what
I heard. A rock opera??? The 60's psychedelic sounds
of the music blend nicely with the vocals of Eleanor who favors
Crissy Hynde, Patti Smith and someone I can't put my finger
on (maybe Matt??). The music itself let's the cat out of the
bag of Matt's love of The Who with crazy drum fills and guitar
solos, while his story telling songwriting makes you wonder
if he is a lyrical genius, or mentally ill. An example ("I
Pierced my ear with a three-hole punch/I ate 12 dozen donuts
for lunch")…the content of each song made me have
to give multiple listens, and even read the lyrics in the art
work…and it began to make sense…
I'm glad that the FF's CD arrived in the hands of music lovers
well after the Strokes, White Stripes, Vines frenzy, as I could
see that they could easily be plopped into that pigeonhole.
However, what we have here is the real deal…an actual
brother/sister duo and Donnie and Marie or the Carpenters they
ain't… 'Matt and Eleanor can you hear me? Can you feel
me near you?'
Correction: A note from Eleanor
hi angie,
thanks for picking us. the lyric you mentioned was written
by me, matt's sister. eleanor
