When compiling my Top 10 of 2004 I struggled with whether
or not to include Ak-momo’s “Return to
N.Y.” It would
have landed at #2 or #3 but I knew,
it’s
small European release notwithstanding, we’d
have it coming in 2005. I
wanted to give it a shot at #1 this year. Let me say
right
up front that the singer,
AK von Malmborg, sounds to me like Kate Bush.
The Lionheart/Never Forever-era
Kate Bush that I used to listen to over and
over and over. Instrumentalist Mattias Olsson (a participant
in Nanook of North) uses vintage
gear like mellotrons and an Optigan to create an
alluring
electronic backdrop that I’m sure sound
like something contemporary,
I just can’t tell you what. The
combination is a word I never
use, MAGICAL. A Friend-of-Parasol suggested a more
current
comparison would be Joanna
Newsom fronting Goldfrapp, to which I reply, “well
alright.” We talk about
our own releases enough that I like to stay away from
them for the Staff Pick. I’m
sorry. This is my favorite CD right now. DOUBLE-TRIPLE
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
