Signalmen
- Self-Titled
Steve
Burton, original bassist for stalwart Champaign-Urbana
avant-pop
group Lonely Trailer, and Mike Brosco, a prime
mover in the late 80s C-U cult band Proof
of Utah started writing songs together in 1997
and firmed up their collaboration in 1998 by
naming themselves Signalmen. Old school music-scene
people smelled a supergroup forming when the
duo was joined by ex-Outnumbered/Weird Summer
guitarist Tim McKeage (playing bass here) and
Turning Curious/Blown skin smasher Jeff Evans.
Parasol Records folk, excited to see a "local
band" seemingly draw on influences from
late 70s New York new wave, jumped on the
bandwagon early and asked to release this self-titled
debut.
Steve and Mike wrote
all the songs on Signalmen, which highlights
a dual guitar approach similar to Television
and Thin White Rope. These underground veterans,
whose previous bands found a more rabid following
in Europe than in their hometown, have constructed
a more straight-ahead rock-pop album than their
pedigree would suggest. And then theres
