Brendan
Gamble - Heartless
Moon
Its been suggested that its
difficult for content artists to make great albums. There has to
be some pain involved.
If so, Brendan Gambles Heartless Moon is on its way to classic status.
During the breakup of his marriage to a fellow bandmate and creative partner,
Gamble wrote twentyseven songs influenced by the mood of his divorce. These
thirteen songs are the document of that time. Though Gamble highlights the title
track as his favorite on the album - mainly because of the color added by cornet
player Steve Lamos other song titles including This Never Stops, Gone
to Seed, and True to a
Lie hint at the horizon-wide acoustic folk pop songs, set adrift in some
dire emotional straits, that appear on Heartless Moon.
Though Gambles previous recording experiences were in a band setting
its obvious that the songs on Heartless Moon dictated a more solitary
approach. Once Gamble wrote the songs until they were done he followed
the production path of one of his bands previous producers, Grammy Award
winner Trina Shoemaker, who advised stripping down the instrumentation to the
core of the song. Gamble recorded his guitar and lead vocal together live to
tape, and duplicated that approach on the two songs that
feature drums.
The sound of Gambles earlier bands Poster Children, Moon Seven
Times has nothing to do with the songs on Heartless Moon. Singer-songwriters
that transcend that Singer Songwriter genre like Nick Drake, Steve
Goodman and Jackson Browne were Gambles solo artist inspiration for these
song arrangements. The catharsis begins here
