Check
out the lovely VIDEO for "April & May".
"Amaterasu" is the debut album
from David Fridlund, namesake and frontman for Swedish guitar-and-piano
pop powerhouse David & The Citizens. To
let you know this isn’t merely David Fridlund’s
solo album the first song is illuminated with the voice of
highly-regarded vocalist and David’s long-time partner
Sara Culler. She leads the way for the first verse before
David joins her and this initial offering really sets the
tone for the rest of the album. In fact many of the songs
on "Amaterasu" are lovely piano-driven duets and
when the twosome aren’t riding tandem you can almost
always hear Sara filling harmonies in behind David’s
lead. And it is a lovely thing indeed, the two of them, their
deep connections and convictions on display in a way that
makes them seems like your closest friends and confidantes.
Praise:
SPLENDID: “Fridlund and co-vocalist Sara
Culler trade verses with stage-stealing grandeur while Fridlund's piano cuts a swathe through the broken-hearted
darkness. Careful string arrangements seep into the few gaps
that aren't already brimming with beautiful noise… Amaterasu
packs enough aching beauty to hook listeners who are hungry for
introverted, intricate pop music.” (Mike Doyle)
SIXEYES: David Fridlund's debut, Amaterasu, is soft and sweet
melancholy, set to beautifully presented music--everything from
'questioning lover' piano pop to Nick Drake/Simon & Garfunkel/Elliott
Smith 'What if?' blue-ballads. (Alan Williamson)
ALL MUSIC GUIDE: “While there is a definite British Invasion
sensibility to many of the song structures on Amaterasu ("April & May" blends
the Tin Pan Alley musings of Sunny Afternoon-era Kinks with the
Beatles classic "Girl"), Fridlund channels fellow contemporary
Scandinavians like Sondre Lerche and the Kings of Convenience
as well, peppering his songs with intricate string parts and
the occasional moody saxophone. This is an icy, naked, and wholly
engrossing debut.” (James Christopher Monger)
BLOGCRITICS: “Fridlund's music is piano based, evocative,
cerebral pop that will lead you right down the path laid by a
group like Belle & Sebastian , but with an element of bombast
and unease.” (Wally Bangs)
INK 19: “Amaterasu is an album populated with slow-burning
Leonard Cohen inspired tales of spiraling sadness and piano-based
ballads… It's all awfully close to perfect, and with the
mindset that comes with fall looming close on the horizon, it
will only get more so.” (Aaron Shaul)
