Darren Cooper from Three
Hour Tour September 1997
1. Mixing session you wish you could have
attended-"Sgt. Pepper's of course."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but
just can't help yourself-"Walking on Sunshine"-Katrina & the
Waves, "Sugar Shack"-Jimmy Gilmer
3. Favorite record that is not available on
CD-Korgis-Dumb Waiters-Swingers featuring Phil Judd-Counting the
Beat
4. First concert-"Sly & the Family Stone
and Steppenwolf when I was10 years old at Eastern Illinois
University."
5. Fave record that no one else has-"None.
When you buy all of your records off Steve Scariano in the 80s you know you're
not going to get anything that cool."
Three Hour Tour has released two CDs and two
7" singles on Parasol. The debut self-titled CD is being remixed by Adam
Schmitt for re-release and the band's second CD, 1969, is in its second
pressing. Darren promises there will be a new full-length coming soon, titled
B-Side Oblivion.
Angie Heaton October
1997
1. Mixing session you wish you could have
attended-"The one where Michael Jackson and Lisa-Marie Presley got
together."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but
just can't help yourself-All songs by Blues Traveler
3. Favorite CD that you can't find on vinyl-Dream 6
(Concrete Blonde before they were "Concrete Blonde")
4. First concert-September 13, 1984-Go Go's
"Talk Show Tour" in Peoria, Illinois
5. Fave record that no one else has-Dream 6
CD-Garrison Starr CD
Angie released a self-titled CD on Mud in 1996,
and just finished recording her follow up with ace producer/artist Adam
Schmitt. Look for the new one before 1998 hits. In addition, Angie's previous
band, Liquorette, just posthumously released their long-awaited collection (see
page 1). She takes your Parasol mail order. She writes a great song.
Honcho Overload's Bill
Johnson November 1997
1. Mixing session you wish you could have
attended-"The Beach Boys' Smile sessions or the supposed next (?) My
Bloody Valentine record."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but
just can't help yourself-No Doubt-"Spiderwebs"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on
CD-Crippled Pilgrims-Under Water, Rain Parade-Crashing Dream, (2-on-1 honorable
mention) Dumptruck-'D' is for Dumptruck/Positively Dumptruck
4. First concert-Rick Springfield, 1980, Kiel
Auditorium
5. Fave record that no one else has-Crippled
Pilgrims-Under Water
Honcho Overload released two 7" singles and
two full CDs on Mud, and Bill keeps threatening to compile a Honcho
"B-sides-etc.-thing". In fact it has a catalogue number (Mud-CD-13).
Also in the works is a CD re-issue of a cassette release from Bill's first
band, Bad Flannel. It too has a catalogue number (Mud-CD-025). His fictional
band with Castor's Jeff Garber, The Texas Navy, also threatens a catalogue
number. Bill works hard here at Parasol so these may never get done. Finally,
whew, the side project Morning Becomes Electric has two songs on the Mud comp.
Cover the Earth.
Castor's Jeff Garber
December 1997
1. Mixing session you wish you could have
attended-Cure-"Disintegration"
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but
just can't help yourself-"Any song by 311."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on
CD-"I think I'm too young for this question."
4. First concert-"September, 1990, Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood Tour in
Bloomington, Illinois.
5. Fave record that no one else has-Swervedriver-99th Dream
Since its release in October, Castor's Tracking Sounds Alone has received
the most in-house Parasol Mail Order office airplay. And that doesn't even
count when Jeff plays it on his shift. In December 1995 Mud Records released
Castor's stunning self-titled debut. Between Castor and Tracking Sounds Alone
appeared the "Carnival" 7" single that comes packaged in a
reversible felt-like textured sleeve (how did he talk the boss-man into that
one!? ), and two tracks on the Cover the Earth compilation. Not to be stuck in
that guitar player-frontman-singer rut, Jeff played drums on Viewfinder's Stars
On Ice CD.
White Town's Jyoti Mishra
January 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Kraftwerk-Computer World,
BDP-By Any Means Necessary, Depeche Mode-Black Celebration, Alkaholiks-Coast To
Coast, Heaven 17-Penthouse and Pavement, Devo-Freedom of Choice
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-Oasis-"Wonderwall", Sabrina-"Boys, Boys, Boys",
Kim Appleby-"Don't Worry", Radiohead-"Karma Police",
Blur-"Song 2"
3. Favorite record/CD that you can't find-Telex-Birds & Bees, Torch
Song-Wish Thing
4. First concert-"Gordon Giltrap at the Derby Assembly Rooms with my dad
when I was about 11 (?). First one I went to see
the Cure just after
Forest came out."
5. Fave record/CD that no one else has-"The track the Sugargliders
recorded with me that Sarah never released, the new Steinbecks songs (hopefully
coming out on Drive In soon?), (and) The Sylvers' "High School
Dance".
After releasing scores of records, White Town found a worldwide audience
last year with the release of the hit single "Your Woman" (orig.
Parasol-CD-021, subsequently released through EMI). All of Jyoti's pre-Women In
Technology tracks are currently being compiled and mastered in his Derby, UK,
home studio for the double-CD reissue of Socialism, Sexism &Sexuality
(Parasol-CD-004). A new White Town single will precede the SSS reissue and will
be followed by a new full-length tentatively titled Death & Terrorism
(Parasol-CD-030).
Sugarbuzz's Brian Leach
February 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"Previously I would
have said the White Album for sheer variety, Beatledom, length and turmoil, but
after hearing the Pet Sounds box set at Bob's (Bob Kimbell of Weird Summer), I
could be California bound."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"MMM Bop"-Hanson, "Champagne Supernova"-Oasis,
"Walk This Way"-Run DMC/Aerosmith , "Mr. Blue Sky"-ELO,
"What's Going On"-4 Non Blondes, "Boogie Shoes"-KC &
the Sunshine Band, "Heartbeat, It's A Lovebeat"-The DeFranco
Family-"I could keep going on but I'm sure I've exposed too much
already."
3. Favorite record/CD that you can't find-"The second Records album on
CD."
4. First concert-"The Allman Brothers at the Uptown Theatre in
Chicago."
5. Fave record/CD that no one else has-"France Gall's Poupee Du Son (box
set)
well, my friend John gave it to me and he has it too."
Brian has released one solo CD, The Sunrise Nearly Killed Me, and the 3 Mil
Thick CD with his band Sugarbuzz (temporarily out of print). Currently Brian is
in the middle of three different projects: recording Sugarbuzz's second album
(nearly complete), collaborating with longtime musician friend, John Ross, on
an album's worth of material, and final overdubs on the long-awaited (for us
anyway) sessions with Bob Kimbell and Adam Schmitt.
Vinyl Devotion's Shalini
Chatterjee March 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"Have you ever attended
a mixing session? Quel headache. I can barely stand my own. In fact, I usually
leave."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"Heartbreaker"-Pat Benatar, "Is There Something I
Should Know"-Duran Duran, "Close Behind"-Pandoras
3. Favorite record/CD that you can't find-"Recently I've been looking for
the Fun Boy Three record with Terry Hall's version of 'Our Lips Are Sealed.
It's really fun and eerie at the same time."
4. First concert-"The Bangles, Sacramento, California, at Club
Minimal."
5. Fave record/CD that no one else has-"I don't think I have any
collectibles. But I do have a white vinyl record of Crazy Rhythm by the
Feelies. Not as good as Good Earth, but fun to look at. I used to have a
Japanese import of Duran Duran's Night Romantics record but it got lost in my
many moves around the country. It had a pretty good version of (Bowie's)
'Fame'."
Vinyl Devotion started their career in San Francisco and (Shalini, hence the
band) recently made the cross-country move to a town near Winston-Salem, North
Carolina. VD has released a 7" single on Parasol, "Euphoria" b/w
the B-side only version of the Shangri-Las' "Out In The Streets," and
the full-length CD "Floor Model". Both were produced by Parasol fave
Mitch Easter. In addition, Parasol Mail Order carries two older Vinyl Devotion
titles, the "Central Time/Virginia's Dress" 7" on Flamingo, and
the Scott Miller produced 6-song CD-EP If They Know You're Trying on Widely
Distributed.
The Great Crusades' Brian
Krumm April 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-R.E.M.-Murmur, Van Halen-I
or II, Tom Waits-Rain Dogs
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"But Anyway"-Blues Traveler, "Clumsy"-Our Lady
Peace
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-Brian Setzer-Knife Feels Like
Justice
4. First concert-"Genesis on their ABACAB Tour at St. Louis
Arena."
5. Fave record/CD that no one else has-William Shatner-The Transformed Man
Brian formed The Great Crusades in 1997 after the breakup of Suede Chain.
His band since the 6th grade (believe me, I've seen the parents' archived video
tape), Suede Chain built a large following in Illinois and Missouri, after the
CD release of Ripplemark and the accompanying regional hit "Daisy
Dawn". Widespread touring and a second CD, Piloted By Ghosts, followed
before the eclectic six-piece decided to remain friends and go their separate
ways. Except they just can't stay apart. Suede Chain bassist Brian Hunt plays
with Great Crusades and Brian Krumm just traveled to Los Angeles to record
guitar overdubs on SC drummer Jason Docter's latest project. Though Brian was
always an integral writing member of Suede Chain, the luxury of having his own
band has propelled Brian's songwriting to a whole new level. The Great Crusades
CD is highly recommended. If you're looking for a place to start with Suede
Chain, go with Ripplemark.
Weird Summer's Bob Kimbell
May 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"Beach Boys, the Smile
sessions. Each and every one of 'em. And, Bob Dylan and the Hawks-Basement
Tapes."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-Peter Frampton-"Show Me the Way" (live, natch)
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-Beach Boys-Surf's Up, Beach
Boys-Sunflower
4. First Concert-January 1978, Chicago Stadium, Kiss with AC/DC-"Bon Scott
rode on Angus' shoulders out into the crowd-and on that night, watching Gene
Simmons mugging throughout, I got the joke. I think it was Kiss' Love Gun
tour."
5. Fave record/CD that no one else has-Bob Dylan & the Hawks Play Fucking
Loud!
Bob formed Weird Summer in Champaign-Urbana in the mid-80s with Nick Rudd,
Rick Schattick, and Ken Golub. That line-up made two commercially available
recordings, Homer and Cry for the Moon, that were compiled in 1995 to make the
Cry for the Moon (Plus Other Fun) CD. Sometime in between Bob moved to Big Sky
Country. In late 1995 he visited the Midwest where he revived the Weird Summer
name and recorded the well-received Incarnata Mysterica. In 1996 Bob got lonely
for the flat land and moved back to C-U full-time and promptly finished up
another full-length, In Search Of. Currently there are three Bob Kimbell
projects in production. His collaboration with Jack Logan, Little Private
Angel, will be released June 30, 1998. There is a full album of Weird Summer
demos that is mixed and Bob's collaboration with Adam Schmitt and Brian Leach
should be finished before the millenium. We hope that they consider the start
of the new century in year 2000, not 2001.
Wolfie's Joe & Amanda
June 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Joe: Monkees-Headquarters
sessions-Amanda: Weezer-Weezer sessions
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-Joe: "Monster Mash"-Bobby "Boris" Pickett Amanda:
"Axel F"-Harold Faltermeyer
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-Joe: Hardship Post-No Time
(single), Herman's Hermits-Blaze Amanda: (AWOL on this one)
4. First Concert-Joe: Weird Al Yankovic, Star Plaza Theatre, 1985 Amanda:
Natalie Cole, Chicago, 1989
5. Favorite Bass Player-Joe: "Charles Austin from the Super Friendz."
Amanda: "Julie Doiron from Eric's Trip."
Wolfie formed in November 1996, the month of their first show (November 29
for the record). Before that, the band was Mike, R.J., and Joe under a
different name, which was so bad they don't want it mentioned. When Amanda
joined on, the name was changed to Wolfie. All originally from the South
Suburbs of Chicago, the collective Wolfie now call Champaign-Urbana home.
They've released one 7" on Grand Theft Autumn, one 7" on Mud, and the
Mud full-length Awful Mess Mystery, which is available in both CD and 10"
vinyl formats. Wolfie is contributing a cover of "Near Wild Heaven"
to Kindercore's R.E.M. tribute album and the Japanese label 100 Guitar Mania
will release yet another 7" of new songs this summer. Hopefully Mud can
look forward to a fresh Wolfie album this fall.
Big Hello's Chloe F. Orwell
July 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Any of the Beatles' sessions
for two reasons: 1) THEY WERE THE BEATLES and 2) I still can't believe they
achieved those super amazing sounds with only four tracks.
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help yourself- Oh
boy: 1)"Careless Whisper" by Wham! 2) "Take on Me" by Aha
3) "Big in Japan" by Alphaville (o.k., I LOVE that song) 4) I'm not
totally sure that I've got the title right, but "Human Touch" by the
Spice Girls (c'mon, it's super catchy, and Sporty just wails her ass off). 5)
"Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- The Dangtrippers "Days
Between Stations" on Dog Gone Records. I am almost positive that it
doesn't come on CD. It's a really, really good record, and one day, when I
locate my turntable, I'll appreciate it again.
4. First Concert- O.k., I do know my big brother took me to my first rock
concert (I know...not part of the question). I know if it was between two
concerts: either Joni Mitchell or the Moody Blues; around 1978 or 1979 at
either Poplar Creek or Alpine Valley. It was very memorable.
5. Favorite Bass Player- My Big Hello band mate j.a.c.k.i.e., of course. But
for really, really famous bass players I would have to say Paul McCartney or
Colin Moulding (note to Big Hello bandmates: NOT Andy Hummel from Big Star,
believe it or not).
Three years ago Chloe answered an ad in the Chicago Reader seeking a singer
for an image conscious pop band. Chloe met band leader Brad and had a terrile
first audition. Chloe became friends with Brad and had a great second audition.
She then joined the band. Big Hello has contributed songs to four compilation
CDs, self-released a limited-edition five song cassette, recorded a four song
7" for Break Up Records, and released Parasol's full-length Apple
Album.
Ken Stringfellow
August 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"(Posies') Dear 23-- if
I hadn't been running around with my girlfriend, I could have toned down the
reverb a bit."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-" There really aren't any songs one shouldn't like. I could say
something about Thelonious Monster but no one alive today has heard of
them."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-" I want to put Twin Princess
(project with friend Bootsy Holler) on CD."
4. First Concert- "My dad took me to see Don McLean and Juice Newton in
1979, at Ravinia Theatre in Illinois."
5. Favorite Bass Player-" Joe Bass--for the entertainment value
alone!!!"
Hidden Agenda released Posies member Ken Stringfellow's solo CD This Sounds
Like Goodbye, in October 1997, along with a 7" single from Ken's side
project, Twin Princess. These both appeared a few months before the unveiling
of the Posies latest, Success (Pop Llama Records). After recording five
full-lengths, all the Posies took a break to indulge themselves in various side
projects. However, the Posies are just back from touring Europe, and will be
going to Australia in October and November. We're under the impression that
they'll continue to make music together-just not on someone else's schedule.
Besides the well-publicized participation in the Big Star reformation, Ken has
been in involved in many other musical endeavors, too numerous to list
here.
Doleful Lions' Jonathan
Scott September 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Wire-154, Beach
Boys-Friends
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-Shaun Cassidy-"Holiday"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-"The first two Samhain albums
and Sunflower by the Beach Boys."
4. First Concert- "D.O.A. in 1986 at McGregor's in Elmhurst,
Illinois."
5. Favorite Bass Player-Sara Lee
Jonathan Scott is the main man behind one of Parasol's favorite albums of
1998, The Doleful Lions' Motel Swim. Before Option quit publishing they listed
Motel Swim in their "Fast 15," and Bucketfull of Brains and Amplifier
also weighed in with positive pop pronouncements. The band is based in Chapel
Hill, North Carolina, and Jonathan is currently writing songs for what we hope
will be another Doleful Lions album. DL are contributing a track to an upcoming
Naked Raygun tribute (yeah, Jonathan used to live in Chicago), and you can
catch them live at the CMJ Music Marathon (New York City) in
November.
The Outnumbered's Jon
Ginoli October 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"The recent remix of
The Stooges 'Raw Power,' which in its new mix is probably the best rock album
ever."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"'Pop Muzik' by M."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-"The Fall's Early Years
77-79--cannot be found on any format, dammit!"
4. First Concert-"Ugh! Jimmy Buffett at Bradley University, Peoria, IL,
1975!"
5. Favorite Bass Player-"Steve Hanley, The Fall"
This past September Parasol released the Outnumbered compilation CD
Surveying the Damage. That collection included songs from the two LPs The
Outnumbered recorded for Homestead back in the mid-'80s, and the LP
posthumously released in 1988 on Champaign's (and Record Service co-owner Phil
Strang's) Edible Records. After The Outnumbered's breakup, Jon moved to San
Francisco where he helped found the homocore movement and the movement's
front-runner, Pansy Division. Though The Outnumbered have no known plans to
again perform live, Pansy Division has just finished a six week American tour
and will be in Europe from October 21 through mid-December. Please go see them
in support of their latest release, Absurd Pop Song Romance.
Very Secretary's Dave Johnson
& Rachael Dietkus November 1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Dave: "Stone
Roses-Stone Roses." Rachel: "Miles Davis -- Bitches Brew; Al Green --
Let's Stay Together"
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-Dave: "That hit by Level 42 (first cassette I ever bought),
Brandy & Monica-'The Boy is Mine'." Rachel: "Dave Mathews Band --
the violinist rocks, though!"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD-Dave: "Mike Oldfield-Tubular
Bells." Rachel: "Red House Painters - Sundays and Holidays EP (I
think this is what it's called....maybe that's why I can't find it!)"
4. First Concert-Dave: "The First Lollapalooza. I was 14." Rachel:
"Grout Villa at Treno's in Champaign (first 'show') and INXS (first
'concert')."
5. Favorite Bass Player-Dave: "Sara Lee from B-52's, Ani, Indigo Girls,
etc
" Rachel: "Allen Johnson from Very Secretary."
In early 1998 Mud Records released Very Secretary's debut CD Best Possible
Souvenir. Violinist Rachael Dietkus joined the band after the recording of BPS
and VS is now a four-piece after the departure of guitarist Tim Adamson.
Remaining guitarist/vocalist Dave Johnson, and the rest of the band, claims
their next CD will take them even further away from past emo associations.
Until then, check out their Post Marked Stamps split 7" with Compound Red,
available from Parasol Mail Order.
Mark Bacino December
1998
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"I guess the off the
top of my head answers would be "Pet Sounds" or "Revolver".
The left field answer would be sessions for Crowded House's "Temple of Low
Men". Mitchell Froom, Tchad Blake, and Bob Clearmountain at their best.
Unconventional sounding production and recording choices coupled with a
conventional mix. Interesting blend."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help yourself-
"Any Hall and Oates song from the late 70's/early 80's or stuff like
Player's 'Baby Come Back.' Catchy as hell."
3. Favorite CD that you can't find on record-"Once in a while these days
an album comes along on CD that makes me wonder how great it would probably
sound on record...newest example: Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach, 'Painted
from Memory.' It belongs under the needle."
4. First Concert- "My first concert was a Kiss show around '79...lights,
smoke, fire and although they don't get that much credit for it, hooky
tunes."
5. Favorite Bass Player-" Stock answer but it would have to be Sir Paul
Mac. Not so stock answer - Graham Maby, Joe Jackson era."
Mark's debut full-length CD, Pop Job
The Long Player!, was released
just six weeks ago and on the strength of
they-just-don't-make-'em-like-they-used-to hooks, it vaulted into Parasol Mail
Order's top 35 1998 sellers. The great word-of-mouth from fans of his
self-released EP, and the Audities mailing list hasn't hurt. This sugary
wunderkind is based in New York City and is planning some live performances in
1999. Until then, get a hold of what many are considering as one of the best
POP releases of 1998.
The Gerbils' John D'Azzo
April 1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Doug Clark & the Hot
Nuts-Summer Session (Gross Records)
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help yourself-No
Doubt-"Don't Speak"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD (or favorite CD you can't find on
LP)-Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon
4. First Concert-Neil Sedaka-1975-The Dade County Youth Fair
5. Favorite Bass Player-Charlie Haden
And the Elephant 6 carnival keeps on rolling from town to town. The Gerbils
debut full-length, Are You Sleepy, was released by Hidden Agenda in April 1998
and contains all of the marvelous elements that you count on from Elephant 6
releases-a sunshine soul, a crayon box, a wet host, and that fuzzed out pop
circus feel. Featuring members of Neutral Milk Hotel's touring outfit, The
Gerbils have played their own shows across the country including a performance
in New York at the 1996 CMJ Music Marathon. In addition to the CD version of
Are You Sleepy, Earworm in the UK has released the album on vinyl LP. Both
formats are available from Parasol Mail Order.
Belva Plane's Matthew
Pearson May 1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended- "De La Soul Three Feet
High and Rising with producer Prince Paul. I just want to see how they do
it--the layers, the samples, the drumtracks, and the vocals. Plus, I think Plug
one and I would get along."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help yourself-
"'Out of the Blue' by Debbie Gibson--I want to hear J Mascis cover it;
anything by Tool--the guys sings cool melodies, I just don't listen to the
words; and "Never Surrender" by Corey Hart--with a little
perseverance we can get
"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD (or favorite CD you can't find on
LP)- Songs From the Film by Tommy Keene
4. First Concert- "Billy Squier, Assembly Hall, Champaign, Illinois,
Emotions In Motion tour; my dad slept."
5. Favorite Bass Player- Tommy Stinson
Belva Plane's debut CD, Another One I'm Not On, Or Under, was released in
November 1998 and received this recent praise in Canada's Exclaim magazine,
"
this is top-notch stuff-there's nary a weak track to be found. He
(Matthew Pearson) has an earnest vocal style that recalls Tommy
Keene
Another One is a musical bus ride worth being on or under, and it'll
be interesting to follow Pearson's future musical projects, whatever they may
be." We hear that Matthew's future musical projects may be based somewhere
other than his current residence in Chapel Hill, NC. Maybe coming home to
C-U?
Boot camp's Ken Gullic June
1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"Well I love finished
records, but I hate mixing... I get sleepy and say ok to everything, BUT
Captain Fantastic still sounds great to me... and it still holds some magic for
me too. (Currently I am most fascinated by the tambourine usage on 'Tower Of
Babel' but I still don't know what the moaning noise is on 'Bitter
Fingers'!!!)"
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"'Rock Me Gently' - Andy Kim (doing his best Neil Diamond),
'1,000 Miles From Nowhere' - Dwight Yoakam (VERY cool) and 'Time and Tide' -
Basia... I crank 'em every time!!"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "David Werner's David Werner
(Epic... 1980-ish) or the 1st two Producers records....very cool, must find
stuff!!
4. First Concert- "The Godz and ANGEL at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago...
March of 1978!! Since then the thrill of that concert has only been surpassed
by Crowded House in Dallas for the Woodface tour, or Kiss in Detroit for the
reunion tour... but then there's always Cheap Trick's 4 night run at the Metro
this year...somebody stop me!!"
5. Favorite Bass Player-"Though not a bass player, besides Owen Kinser I
guess I'd have to say Paul McCartney or Felix Robinson or Phil Lynott or Tom
Petersson or Tom Broeske or... hell, I can't narrow it down... sorry."
Boot camp has released one 7" single and has a limited edition six-song
EP coming soon. I think it's safe to say that Ken has been working on the first
Boot camp CD longer than Adam Schmitt has been working on Adam's third CD. And
maybe that' s because they're learning tricks from each other. Adam co-produced
the cover of Neil Sedaka's "Bad Blood" that appears here. Other
featured performers on the EP include Sugarbuzz's Brian Leach and Cheap Trick's
Robin Zander.
Autoliners' John Ross July
1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-" It's a toss up
between the original Broadway cast recording of Hair (was there really that
much mixing?) and Jehovah Kill by Julian Cope."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help yourself
-"'Precious and Few' by Climax. I'm sure that's the only one (unless you
count songs by the Partridge Family, The Cowsills, The DeFranco Family, The
Osmonds, etc.)."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "2nd Honeymoon and Don't
Stop the World by Deaf School. They were issued together as a double album in
the U.S. I think they would both fit nicely onto a single disc."
4. First Concert- "Cheap Trick at the International
Amphitheater."
5. Favorite Bass Player-" Jean Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers."
Autoliner is the new Chicago-based project from John Ross, drummer Tom
Curless, and Sugarbuzz's Brian Leach. Ross & Leach have been friends since
their days growing up in Park Forest, Illinois, and it's quite amazing that
this is their first commercially available CD as collaborators, though a song
they co-wrote appeared on Leach's The Sunrise Nearly Killed Me album. Ross has
a rich musical history having played in a band with Soundgarden's Kim Thayil,
recorded early demos for Veruca Salt, and released albums as part of the bands
Monica's Interval and Vivian Section. The debut Autoliner CD, is slated for an
August 17 release on Parasol.
Bikeride's Tony Carbone
September 1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"Beach Boys' Friends
LP. So little expected and so much delivered. The Beatles' 'Tomorrow Never
Knows,' and Built to Spill's There's Nothing Wrong With Love LP. Best album of
the 90's."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"Anything by George Michael or Roberta Flack, R&B slow
jams."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "The Apartments' The Evening
Visits and Stays For Years. One of the best 80's records ever."
4. First Concert- "The Bangles with the Untouchables."
5. Favorite Bass Player-"Carol Kaye (wrecking crew member), Ian Spalding
(Bikeride), Paul McCartney on 'With a Little Help From My Friends.'"
Tony Carbone is the leader of Fountain Valley California's Bikeride. The
band started out recording music for a Loyola Marymount University project, and
turned those songs into the self-released Bikeride debut Here Comes the Summer.
In May of this year Hidden Agenda/Parasol released Bikeride's sophomore
full-length, 37 Secrets I Only Told America and before the end of 1999 Hidden
Agenda will release a 10" slab of vinyl filled with seven unreleased
Bikeride songs. If you're attending the CMJ fun fest this month, be sure to
catch Bikeride at Acme Underground (Under Acme) on September 15th at 10:45
PM.
June & the Exit
Wounds' Todd Fletcher October 1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"One where I didn't
screw the song up."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"Songs with just a few simple piano chords and without the fun
and sun ."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "The Charlie Dold
catalog."
4. First Concert- "Farm Aid."
5. Favorite Bass Player-"Alejandro Palao, who thanks to me will now get
the widespread recognition he deserves."
Those of you not frightened off by the misleading band name have discovered
a soft pop gem in "a little more Haven Hamilton, please." Parasol
will be releasing a vinyl LP version in October that will contain a 7"
single with two non-LP tracks, and we have recently licensed this CD to Marina
Records in Germany. We're a big fan of Marina Records and are excited that they
will be telling their European brethren about "Haven Hamilton." The
German CD version, available in early 2000, will contain the two bonus songs
from the LP's 7". Confused? Here's more
the Japanese magazine Bloody
Dolphins will have one of the bonus two songs on a CD that is coming with their
next issue. Finally, Todd Fletcher is about to begin recording his follow up
album. We can't wait.
Steve Pride & His Blood
Kin's Don Gerard November 1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-"Famous Amos mixing his
most perfect batch of cookies...Man, I hate mixing sessions. Cool things will
happen, but the tedium...If I really had to pick, probably the final session
for the new Adam Schmitt (provided it doesn't interfere with my kids' high
school graduation)."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"'I Wish I Were An Oscar Mayer Wiener,' anything by Herb Alpert
(although Elvis Costello is gonna probably start raiding his archives any
minute), 'Dragon Tales' (PBS theme song), most Tom T. Hall, 'Spiders &
Snakes' by Jim Stafford and 'Pee Wee's Playhouse Theme.'"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "That's a tough one...I wish
more of the early Champaign (music scene) stuff was available on CD (especially
Cowboy X). I mean, it's great that every song Area ever wrote has been
re-released three times, but not a single note from iAck-Ack!? Oh, and the
entire Jason & the Scorchers collection..."
4. First Concert- "Yikes. REO Speedwagon...I wore my blue three-quarted
sleeve jersey and tried my best to look like a townie/grit/skid, but I think I
failed. I liked the poppy stuff off of Hi-Infidelity, but failed to really get
into the show. A cute "stoner" girl behind me tapped me with her foot
and smiled seductively at me during '(She Doesn't Like The) Tough Guys.' So I
was simultaneously aroused and emasculated at the same time..."
5. Favorite Bass Player-"Don Gerard. That is the only way I'll ever see my
name on a "Favorite Bass Player" list. I'm not a real "Jaco
Pastorious"-kinda guy, so I don't really know how to rate them...I like
Tommy Stinson and the guy from Archers of Loaf and Pete Fardon (RIP), I
suppose...."
The Steve Pride & His Blood Kin CD Pride on Pride featuring 22 songs
recorded in the early '90s, and compiled in 1999 by Blood Kin member Jay
Bennett is out now. Don played bass with Steve Pride and Moon Seven Times, and
was the drummer in Adam Schmitt's teenage band Farmboys.
Quickspace's Sean Newsham
December 1999
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-" Sgt.Peppers!!!! Exile
on Main Street - more for the crack than the mixing maybe..."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"Charlatans records!!!! Maybe that has something to do with the
Stones liking ?"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "Struggling to get a hold of
the Beefheart compilation on vinyl at the moment - Sun Ra
7"s!!!!"
4. First Concert- "Showaddywaddy - don't ask..."
5. Favorite Bass Player-" Mark Pavement-man is pretty dam cool wouldn't
you say...Kirsten ex-Novakian!!!"
Hidden Agenda/Parasol released Quickspace's second proper full-length
Precious Falling in the U.S. in August of 1999, some ten months after its
unveiling in the UK. In the meantime the band recorded PF's follow up,
reputedly titled The Death of Quickspace
(though we don't know if the
title is a harbinger of things to come) and released the Europe-only 7"
"Lobbalongsong." Though arrangements are not settled yet with a US
distributor, look for a UK release of Death in March 2000.
Philo's Jeff Cohen January
2000
1.Mixing session you wish you could have
attended-"Anything that Rudy van Gelder engineered, the godfather of
near-side mic-ing technique. We tried to pay homage on 'One Cheating Bride' and
'Cupid'".
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help
yourself-"Probably shouldn't like, or definitely shouldn't like?
Definitely not 'Summer of '69', but hey, I got my first real six
string...Another one is 'Katmandu'--wait a sec, I hate that song!"
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- "T-Bone Burnett's first EP,
Trap Door. Another is Syd Straw's first record, Surprise. She puts all of these
waif female singer songwriters to shame. These should be widely-available but I
can't find 'em."
4. First Concert- "Mabels (Champaign, Illinois), 1982. Black Flag. Was it
1982? Hey, who went to the follow up gig at Eric Jakobson's house the next
night?"
5. Favorite Bass Player-"This one is hard...on the one hand is Michael
Anthony, Van Halen's bassist, arguably at the top of the money to talent ratio.
You gotta admire a guy who is sooo bad, and still hung on to make millions and
get the chicks. But seriously, Chris Linster, of the seminal Chicago punk band,
the Fawns. Albini applied a lot of Linster's techniques to his own
playing."
Chicago's New City once tabbed Cohen the "Midwest's Elvis
Costello," which supports Philo's reputation as an outfit focusing on
songwriting and lyrics. Though the band has country AND rock/punk origins, this
dichotomy of styles has allowed Philo to play on diverse bills, including Flaco
Jimenez, Freakwater, and Billy Joe Shaver on the one hand, and Matthew Sweet,
Buffalo Tom, Afghan Whigs, and Jack Logan on the other.
Starlet's Joakim Odlund
& Jonas Farm February 2000
1. Mixing session you wish you could have attended-Joakim: "Since my
favourite record is The Queen is Dead, I would have been there. Especially when
Morrissey sang, "I know it's over." Johnny Marr, referring to this
particular moment some years ago, said that this was the moment of his
lifetime. I'm sure I would had felt the same." Jonas: "Well, My
Bloody Valentine's Loveless would have been something to attend, or their
lovely You Made Me Realize EP. And, of course, the mixing and making of the
Beatles' Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band."
2. Songs you think you probably shouldn't like but just can't help yourself-
Joakim: "I'm 25 years old now and I have accepted my taste in music, so
nowadays I happy to dance to "The River" or "Thunder Road"
by Bruce Springsteen. Jonas: "Luckily I've come to reason that there is no
song I 'shouldn't like.' But an answer to the question would be Bryan Adams
"Heaven", which I find beautiful and sensitive. I know that many
people automatically reject certain artists because the artists are not
"this" enough or "that" enough. Silly. A good song is a
good song, and it's all individuality in the end."
3. Favorite record that you can't find on CD- Joakim: "There is a Swedish
group called Looptroop which is more independent than early Belle &
Sebastian and which is nearly as hard as to get hold of as the first pressing
of Tigermilk. White label only." Jonas: "I've been looking for years
for London Weekend by Another Sunny Day. It seems impossible (to find) and
that's very annoying."
4. First Concert- Joakim: "Ulf Lundell Idrottshallen at Kristianstad 1988.
Ulf is a legendary Swedish singer/songwriter. Sounds like Springsteen and looks
like Springsteen but with Dylan's attitude. That is Ulf!!!!!" Jonas:
"It must have been a Swedish folk park orchestra of some kind when I was
very young. They play like the 60´s bands but in a very dodgy way, and the
lyrics are all about love and loss, just like Starlet."
5. Favorite Bass Player- Joakim: "James Jamerson." Jonas: "Peter
Hook." |
