- Self-Titled (Fontana/Island)
CD $10.00
Listen:
Myopic

Thousand
Days of Yesterdays
Saturday Shift:
First CD in the player today ain't new in any
way, shape or form, but a proverbial blast from
the past in the form of proggy, early-'70s supergroup
Captain Beyond (featuring members of Iron Butterfly
and Deep Purple), which has been totally frying
our mynds in recent weeks. Maybe it's the heat
(or the humidity) but we've been pleasantly
overwhelmed by CB's baroque guitar-rock alchemies,
symptoms include glassy eyes and shit-eating
grins. [more

Every
Time It Rains Like This
Our New
Zealand shipment has arrived. New 2009 album
by NZ Rock Godfather Dave Kilgour (The Clean,
amongst others) find him paired up with Kiwi
poet laureate Sam Hunt. Hunt supplies the lyrics
and Kilgour the voice and tunes, backed breezily
by his band, The Heavy Eights. There’s
a hint of Dylan, of Lloyd Cole and even some
Go-Betweens déjà vu. An excellent
addition to Kilgour’s previous solo work,
ie: effortlessly dreamy folk-pop. [more

fiery, cinematic guitar-n-organ rock frosted
in psychedelia; of the 80s, but as urgent and
grand today as it was 20+ years ago. For fans

Our New

First up, a pair of mini-albums from White Swan
(Sonya Waters) and Black Swan (Arch Hill label
honcho Ben Howe) that slink and sway through
a slew of echoing neo-folk and lambent psychedelia,
bringing to mind Mazzy Star, The Triffids (truly),
Nick Cave and even our own Horse's Ha. Highly

Mindbending: The latest album from San Fran's
best psych band, which could be the best throwback
psych album of the year. Friendlier and more
peaceful-eyed than Austin's Black Angels, more
expansive and retro-fit than Frisco brethren
Wooden Shjips, with just a touch of Crystal
Antlers ferocity (more ferocious on previous
album, Ekranoplan).

We’re not sure how we avoided falling
in love with Comet Gain back in the day, when
we really should have, but this collection of
singles and odds-n-sods might be one of our
favorite album of The Spring, The Year and then
some; and makes us even more mortified that
we’re jumping on this band’s wagon
so very late. A collection of CG’s gloriously
noisy pop recorded during the last decade, available
on CD and now deluxe
DLP vinyl in a gatefold Stoughton jacket.

Frisco psych-juggernaut Wooden Shjips (the j

Dos maybe ain't as heavy as their slew
of singles previous, but the whole cosmic trip
is evolved to a point where your glad the songs

Andrew
After a
brilliant debut EP Crystal Antlers return
with another potent dose of high-energy psych-soul
squall, fuzz pedals set to stun, Sexual Chocolate
in full-effect. Echoing soul-psych epiphanies,
where every measure is crescendo and
climax; favoring acid-fried melodies over outright
noise-for-noise-sake. A righteous kicking-out-of-the-jams
going on here; think Stooges, Union Carbide

androgynous
and schizophrenic vocals
as spectral and otherworldly as anything in
