The
Bear Quartet are Sweden's most revered and critically acclaimed
pop band; The Bear Quartet are beautiful, mesmerizing, and challenging.
The band formed in 1989, in Lulea, a small town above the Arctic
Circle -- funny what geography does to a band. They released
their first album in 1993 and since then have released TEN ALBUMS
and FIFTEEN EPs, and for all us 'Mericans, that's
quite a lot of catching up to do. Our mission over the next few
months: to bring you up to speed with The Bear Quartet by plowing
through more than a decade of the band's recorded endeavors in
the space of four months. Heck,
we're throwing the first eight years of BQ at you right now!
The albums released since 'Moby Dick', as you will discover by
Thanksgiving,
are all spectacularly mindblowing
(and challenging, lest we forget), and the accompanying EPs contain
some of the band's finest songs. In fact, most of my very favorite
BQ songs are b-sides from their
myriad singles, which draws another parallel: a nod to an age
(I think it was called "The
Eighties") when great bands mattered so much and when every
song counted. So, now, we break ground with The Bear Quartet's
monumental and critically acclaimed 1997 masterpiece, 'Moby Dick',
partnered with the "His Spine" EP.
We also have the band's first five full-length albums -- those
released prior to 'Moby Dick' available for you soon-to-be-BQ
completists (I know you're out there, even
if you don't, yet) -- plus a DCD collection of early EP material,
rarities, and unreleased stuff which was released this past spring.
The joy of it is there are
now over 200 BQ songs to explore...plus a brand new album, 'The
Angry Brigade', due this Fall. I'm asking you to trust me, you
pop-people you, you rock-people you. Between
now and Thanksgiving you'll have the opportunity to bury yourself
in The Bear Quartet as I have for the past three months. It has
made my life more beautiful.
