Ambarchi, Oren
A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks
PS, US There is a vivid breadth to the guitar deconstructions of Australian
OREN AMBARCHI. Sometimes his work takes a delicate lilt; it can also
dive into dark and deep pools of sound when he joins cowl-core ensembles
Sunn O))) (with Stephen O'Malley) and Burial Chamber Trio (with Greg
Anderson). Whether with those bands, solo, or in collaboration with
luminaries ranging from Mike Patton and John Zorn to Christian Fennesz,
he consistently reroutes his instrument into zones of arch, alien
abstraction. "A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks" offers a
dizzying gaze straight into a chasm of extreme frequencies - paint-peelingly
high and bowel-churningly low - all set atop a sub-strata of menace,
angst, and contemplative beauty.

The Light Of The Golden Day, The Arms Of The Night
PS, US And now for something different... Fulfilling the promise of
his impeccable entry in our 7-inch series, THE SOCIAL CLUB, THE SOCIAL
REGISTRY is proud to announce "The Light Of A Golden Day, The
Arms Of The Night" -- the debut LP from Los Angeles located DOUGLAS
ARMOUR. This album finds the artist expertly blending tons of our
favorite poptones from days past to create a hyper-literate pastiche
that's equal parts nostalgia and forward thinking. Echoing its title,
the LP has a structure that plays off binary oppositions to create
one of the most varied pop albums we've heard in a long time.

Kids Aflame (CD/DVD)
PS, US Inspired by a love of "sad/weird/insular genius types"
like Neil Young, Stephin Merritt, & David Byrne, the music cloaks
catchy tunes in fuzzy, echo-laden production & TODD GOLDSTEIN's
melodramatic, crooned vocals. A true one-man band, he recorded this
over a period of 3 years, playing all the instruments himself. A hazy,
late-night mood runs deep in the record's 13 tracks w/ a surprise
around every corner.

Astro/Hiroshi Hasegawa
Live At Muryoku Muzen Temple
PS, US Live At Muryoku Muzen Temple is limited to 500 copies with
the first 100 on color vinyl. This is the companion release to the
Astro CD titled The Echo At The Purple Dawn being released at the
same time on Important Records. Astro, of course, is the analog/space
project of Hiroshi Hasegawa of the legendary Japanese group C.C.C.C.
This limited vinyl only release was created using ring modulator and
vocals which are rare these days in Astro recordings. Cover art designed
by Important. ASTRO is Hiroshi Hasegawa's solo project. He is a founding
member of the Japanese noise group C.C.C. Born in 1963, Hasegawa began
his improvisation with his voice and drums. In 1990, he made the group
C.C.C.C. around the concept of improvised mass-noise with a very loud
sound. Members included Mayuko Hino, Ryuichi Nagakubo, Fumio Kosakai.
Hasegawa began his solo unit ASTRO with analog synthesizers in 1993
and continued playing in C.C.C.C. Though C.C.C.C. is no more, Hasegawa
has continued with Astro and his numerous collaborations drifting
between dreamy spaced out bliss and full on waterfalls of beautiful

Astro/Hiroshi Hasegawa
The Echo From The Purple Dawn
PS, US The Echo From The Purple Dawn is a brand new full length from
C.C.C.C. member Hiroshi Hasegawa's solo project Astro. Using a battery
of oscillators, ring modulators and field recordings Hasegawa has
created an engaging and versitile album that masterfully drifts between
spaced out analog dream drone and a more extreme form of harsher droning.
As Astro Hasegawa is able to combine some of the harsher influence
of C.C.C.C. into the world of analog space music to create the signature
sounds of Astro. Included is a live track recorded at a festival at
the Tokyo Keizai niversity organized by Tetsuo Kogawa. Cover art designed
by Important. ASTRO is Hiroshi Hasegawa's solo project. He is a founding
member of the Japanese noise group C.C.C.C. Born in 1963, Hasegawa

This is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage

Bass Communion
Molotov & Haze
PS, US Molotov And Haze is packaged in a deluxe tip-on style heavy-duty
gatefold jacket with the cd slipped into a Japanese inner bag. Design
by Carl Glover. Bass Communion is a project dedicated to Steven Wilson's
recordings in an ambient, drone, and/or electronic vein. Most of the
pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings
of real instruments and field recordings. The atmosphere of the music
has tended towards the dark and melancholic, but expressed with an
almost Zen like beauty. More recently Wilson has also started working
with a guitar and laptop configuration - the first material in this
style is contained on this album.

Beck
Modern Guilt
PS, US At first glance, it seems like the teaming of Beck and Danger
Mouse is a perfect pairing of postmodern pranksters, as neither musician
has shaken the first impression he's made: for most, Beck is still
seen as that ironic Loser, trawling through pop culture's junk heap,
while Danger Mouse is the maverick of The Grey Album, the mash-up
of the Beatles and Jay-Z that reads like a joke but doesn't play like
one. Close listening to either man's body of work easily dispels these
notions, as Beck has spent as much time mining the murky melancholia
of Mutations as he has crafting neon freakouts like Midnite Vultures.
He's made a career bouncing from one extreme to the other, occasionally
revisiting the cut 'n' paste collage that would have seemed like a
natural fit for the sample-centric Danger Mouse, but when he partnered
with Danger Mouse in 2008, Beck's pendulum was swinging away from
the Odelay aesthetic, as he spent two records on the lighter side,
thereby dictating a turn toward the dark. As it happens, this is Danger
Mouse's true forte, as his productions have almost uniformly been
dark, impressionistic pop-noir, whether he's working with Damon Albarn
on the Gorillaz or the Good, the Bad & the Queen, or collaborating
with Cee-Lo as Gnarls Barkley (whose fluke hit "Crazy" had
nasty rumbling undercurrents) or even blues-rockers the Black Keys.
So, he turns out to be a perfect fit for Beck, just perhaps not in
the way that many might expect, although the title of their album
Modern Guilt should be a big tip-off that these ten tracks are hardly
all sunshine and roses. Compared to the waves of grief on Sea Change,
Modern Guilt trips easily, as this is a deft tapestry of drum loops,
tape splices, and chugging guitars pitched halfway between new wave
and Sonic Youth. This may not brood but it's impossible to deny its
heaviness, either in its tone or its lyrics. Beck peppers Modern Guilt
with allusions to jets, warheads, suicide, all manners of modern maladies,
and if the words don't form coherent pictures, the lines that catch
the ear create a vivid portrait of unease, a vibe that Danger Mouse
mirrors with his densely wound yet spare production. As on his work
with Albarn and the Black Keys, Danger Mouse doesn't impose his own
aesthetic as much as he finds a way to make it fit with Beck's, so
everything here feels familiar, whether it's the swinging '60s spy
riff on "Gamma Ray," the rangy blues on "Soul of Man,"
the stiff shuffle of the title track, or the thick and gauzy "Chemtrails,"
which harks back to the sluggish, narcotic psychedelia of Mutations.
Danger Mouse assists not only with execution but with focus, pulling
in Modern Guilt at just over half an hour, which is frankly a relief
after the unending sprawl of The Information and Guero. Its leanness
is one of the greatest attributes of Modern Guilt, as every song stays
as long as it needs to, then lingers behind in memory, leaving behind
a collection of echoes and impressions. If anything, Modern Guilt
may be just a little bit too transient, as it doesn't dig quite as
deep as its subjects might suggest, but that's also par for the course
for both Beck and Danger Mouse: they tend to prefer feel to form.
Here, they deliver enough substance and style to make Modern Guilt
an effective dosage of 21st century paranoia. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine,

Black To Comm
Fractal Hair Geometry
PS, GERMANY Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss
Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label
he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists
out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label,
a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish
Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works "Fractal
Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to
date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental
Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around
recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können
leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious
recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a
more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact
Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital
effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into
dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic
electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating
& sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises
make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most
of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50
recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through
the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much
more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy
4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery,
one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club
scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu)
on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live)
band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock,
Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music,
seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered
neon-coloured collage artwork that is printed on special ultra-heavy
cardboard stock.

Bodies Of Water
A Certain Feeling
PS, US One year after the self-release of the acclaimed "Ears

another full-length offering. "A Certain Feeling," their
first record for SECRETLY CANADIAN, was written, arranged and recorded
in David & Meredith Metcalf's house in the Northeast L.A. neighborhood
of Highland Park. The strains that one can hear running through all
of Bodies of Water's music are fully exhibited here; instantly familiar
melodies, rich harmonic color, expansively deft arrangements, and
compositions that ebb, flow, and double back on themselves in cathartic
synchronicity. Though no two songs sound entirely similar, it's a
cohesive that comes out feeling like the anthemic prog/gospel/psychedelic/kraut-tribal
movie score that Ennio Morricone and Phil Spector never got around
to collaborating on. The choral hugeness that typified "Ears
Will Pop" still rears its emphatic head, only here it is more
often held in reserve while we marinate in each movement before being
pulled along into the next passage of the narrative. "A Certain
Feeling" is the sound of a group carving out an ever-evolving,
but distinct aesthetic niche for themselves The singing, playing,
compositions, lyrical themes (obsessive meta-physicality/spiritual
surrender/human frailty) are unmistakably theirs. "A Certain
Feeling" is a step forward, but assuredly filled with the same
beautiful urgency that we have come to expect from them.

and Stan Kentons historic Innovations Orchestra. With his buzz cut
coiffeur, Hawaiian shirts, chinos and open top sports car, the ubiquitous
Bud Shank epitomized West Coast cool. Aware of Charlie Parker, it
was Lee Konitz, Paul Desmond, and to a lesser extent Benny Carter
who caught Buds ear, and his tenure as lead alto sax in Stan Kenton
s Orchestra, with Art Pepper on his left, kept Shanks permanently
sharp.

Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde
PS, US A key transitional touchstone in The Byrds' fabled canon, 1969's
Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde was the next stop in the band's pioneering
country-rock trajectory and the first album by the post-Gram Parsons
lineup. With leader Roger McGuinn at the helm of a stellar new edition
of the band featuring guitar god Clarence White, drummer Gene Parsons,
and bassist John York, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde sees The Byrds bridging
the gap between the psychedelic flights of the group's mid-'60s albums
and the down-home, country-based style developed only months earlier
with Sweetheart of the Rodeo. In addition to containing strong McGuinn
originals ("King Apathy III," "Old Blue"), more
of the band's beloved interpretations of Bob Dylan classics ("This
Wheel's on Fire" and a medley blending The Bard's "My Back
Pages" with Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do"),
and even a Gram Parsons collaboration (the bemusing "Drug Store
Truck Drivin' Man," which cleverly celebrates The Byrds' love
of country music while simultaneously taking a dig at small-minded
rednecks), Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde also boasts two tracks composed
by McGuinn for the obscure, racy '60s cult movie Candy. Mastered from

Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's
California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're
known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately
concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The
quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features
the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday
Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking
Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking
Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced
by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray).
Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer,
Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges
construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire
licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently

PS, US One-man-band masterminded by Dean Wells. An album that has
grown from its lo-fi roots to a more maturely-crafted sound. His inclination
towards brevity persists, w/nearly all the 22 lo-fi songs getting

fuzz-rock is still replete w/ catchy melodies, perfect playful pop

Coldplay
Viva La Vida
PS, US When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, X&Y,
it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist
good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the
truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock.
Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la
Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily
to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort
zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it. In his hands,
this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely,
but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay's DNA that they
remain courteous even when they experiment. With his big-budget production,
Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist's personality, as he allows
bands to be just as risky as they want to be -- which is quite a lot
in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so
much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement -- he's almost
a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his
study -- pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing
the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same
self-styled grandiosity; they've just found a more interesting way
to get to the same point. Gone are Chris Martin's piano recitals and
gone are the washes of meticulously majestic guitar, replaced by orchestrations
of sound, sometimes literally consisting of strings but usually a
tapestry of synthesizers, percussion, organs, electronics, and guitars
that avoid playing riffs. Gone too are simpering schoolboy ballads
like "Fix You," and along with them the soaring melodies
designed to fill arenas. In fact, there are no insistent hooks to
be found anywhere on Viva la Vida, and there are no clear singles
in this collection of insinuatingly ingratiating songs. This reliance
on elliptical melodies isn't off-putting -- alienation is alien to
Coldplay -- and this is where Eno's guidance pays off, as he helps
sculpt Viva la Vida to work as a musical whole, where there are long
stretches of instrumentals and where only "Strawberry Swing,"
with its light, gently infectious melody and insistent rhythmic pulse,
breaks from the album's appealingly meditative murk. Whatever iciness
there is to the sound of Viva la Vida is warmed by Martin's voice,
but the music is by design an heir to the earnest British art rock
of '80s Peter Gabriel and U2 -- arty enough to convey sober intelligence
without seeming snobby, the kind of album that deserves to take its
title from Frida Kahlo and album art from Eugene Delacroix. That Delacroix
painting depicts the French Revolution, so it does fit that Martin
tones down his relentless self-obsession -- the songs aren't heavy
on lyrics and some are shockingly written in character -- which is
a development as welcome as the expanded sonic palette. Martin's refined
writing topics may be outpaced by the band's guided adventure, but
they're both indicative that Coldplay are desperate to not just strive
for the title of great band -- a title they seem to believe that they're
to the manor born -- but to actually burrow into the explorative work
of creating music. And so the greatest thing Coldplay may have learned
from Eno is his work ethic, as they demonstrate a focused concentration
throughout this tight album -- it's only 47 minutes yet covers more
ground than X&Y and arguably A Rush of Blood to the Head -- that
turns Viva la Vida into something quietly satisfying. ~ Stephen Thomas

Dalton, Karen
Green Rocky Road: The Loop Tapes, Pine Street Recordings (ON SALE)
PS, US Never-released 1963 home recordings packaged in a CD gatefold
Japanese mini-LP jacket. Discovered on the same reel-to-reel tapes
that housed the Cotton Eyed Joe release. Remastered at Abbey Road
Studios by Peter Mew. With 8-page booklet with beautiful, newly-unearthed
photos of Karen Dalton from 1962-1963. Liner notes by Dick Weissman.
The release of Green Rocky Road fills in the lacunae in the rightly
romanticized mythos of the late folk music legend Karen Dalton and
goes a long way in clarifying her crucial role in the evolution of
modern acoustic music from 'folk' source materials. Includes a lengthy
interview with Joe Loop who was Karen's friend and patron in the early
60's when he'd often book her into the coffee house he ran in Boulder
CO. The new album features private recordings she made at his home
while visiting (last year saw the release of live recordings from
said coffee house). The only formal studio recordings made during
Karen's lifetime -- released in 1969 and 1971 respectively -- were
thoroughly dissected upon their recent re-release. As wonderful as
these albums were, they captured Karen in relatively awkward circumstances.
Green Rocky Road, along with last year's Cotton Eyed Joe, provide
a rare glimpse of Karen Dalton circa 1962 and 1963 at her most pure,
most powerful, and at ease. These recordings, released by Delmore
Recordings (in association with the Megaphone label), document her
unique artistry at the time she was profoundly influencing the likes
of Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and Bob Dylan. PITCHFORK: "Green Rocky
Road is a much different listening experience than Cotton Eyed Joe,
which she performed specifically for the small crowd around her, who
listen raptly and applaud heartily. If that release is public, then
Green Rocky Road is pointedly private. Here Dalton entertains no one
but herself. In addition to singing traditional ballads like "Nottingham
Town" and "Skillet Good and Greasy", she runs through
pensive versions of "Ribbon Bow" and "Katie Cruel",
which would appear later on her first and second albums respectively.
They have all the informality of someone thinking aloud, which suits
her signature vocals perfectly. "Ribbon Bow" sounds careful
and simmering, with Dalton reaching down into her lower register to
sound uncharacteristically foreboding-- an approach that adds a bit
of malice to the lyrics."

DJ Donna Summer
Panther Tracks vol. 2
PS, UK About this release: He's back! It's been 2 years since Jason
Forrest released his last full-length album, and 5 years since he's
released as Donna Summer. So now he's back, this time with the slightly
different moniker (DJ Donna Summer) and his first release for his
own Cock Rock Disco label. Just as "Shamelessly Exciting"
was a record that mixed different genres into a new mash of sampled
sounds, "Panther Tracks" is a record comprised of different
styles of dance music made solely with the intention to get people
moving! From Booty to Breakcore, Happy Hardcore to Hardstyle, Techno
to B'more Club Music, Forrest has it in there! Initially begun as
a sort of remix record, "Panther Tracks" builds heavily
on a variety of sampled heroes. One can hear Dj Chip and Dj Technics
form the skeleton of more booty oriented tracks like "Peepers"
and "Boomshakalaka". While some live recordings (on cassette)
of old-school Uk Breakbeat Rave festivals by DJ Slipmat, Ratpack,
and Ellis D are reconstructed to make new Breakcore styled dance tracks.
Traces of Hardstyle, Techno and a whole lot of Breakcore yield such
gems as "Party People", "Get Down" and "Rock
Rock Rock". No style too hard or too cheesy to learn from, "Panther
Tracks" is like the ultimate Rave; it's fun, slightly crazy,
and will keep you dancing all night long.

Stanley Yerkowski presents: Xylophone Jism as The Ridiculator
PS, UK So way, way, way back in 1994 Dan Doormouse first starting
making hardcore techno in Milwaukee Wisconsin, then one day he stumbled
upon a Sun Ra record and thus, "Breakcore" in the United
States of America was born. He began the legendary Addict and Distort
record labels soon after, and began releasing the most fucked up high
intensity music the world has ever seen. The nephew of Lemme from
motorhead (really, no shit!), Dan soon started performing solo and
with his band Meat around Milwaukee in the Midwest of the US, gaining
a massive following of renegades, speed freaks and social workers.
Somehow, Mike Paradinas (Mu-ziq) took notice, and "Broken"
was Dan's first major CD release in 2002 on the Planet Mu record label.
But it comes as no surprise that the sorted and complex realities
of Breakcore stardom (in this case of bottle of Jack Daniels, and
some misplaced punches) made it difficult to continue with Planet
Mu . Naturally, Dan finds a home here at Cock Rock Disco with "Stanley
Yershonowski presents Xylophone Jism as The Ridiculator."

Dredd Foole
Kissing the Contemporary Bliss
PS, US For over 30 years troubadour wailer Dan Ireton, aka DREDD FOOLE,
has called upon the spirit of 78 shellac blues n' psychedelic Stooges
n' Velvets to fuel his guttural, pure soul ethos of the song. Whether
solo or leading mass, Foole hints at the classic forms of Dylan's
"Blood On The Tracks", Buckley's "Starsailor"
and the celestial fug of Sun Ra's third-eye vision to create an approach
untraveled yet increasingly influential (see: Six Organs of Admittance,
Sunburned Hand of the Man). Produced in multi-dimensional spectrasound
by Matt "MV" Valentine (Bummer Road, Tower Recordings),
"Kissing The Contemporary Bliss" spans 50 miles of elbow
room (it's a double CD) and kicks up the most outward bound and staggering
approaches to Gus Cannon's "Walk Right In" and Robert Johnson's
"Stones In My Passway" while offering ear-popping originals
colored by Erika Elder's jug blowin' and Coot Moon's ecstatic, reverb
dosed banjo. You'll hear nothing like this in 2008 or beyond. Packaged
in a mini-LP-styled gatefold book with full color photos of The Foole

Drive-By Truckers
Brighter Than Creation's Dark
PS, US Drive-By Truckers leader Patterson Hood wrote in a post on
the band's website that 2007 "was supposed to be our year of
taking it easy," but it doesn't seem to have worked out that
way, and that's a good thing for everyone concerned. The songwriting
bug seems to have bit the Drive-By Truckers sometime after the release
of 2006's A Blessing and a Curse, and while that album was a bit short
on top-shelf material (at least compared to the band's work since
Southern Rock Opera), Brighter Than Creation's Dark is a dazzling
return to form, delivering some of their finest, most eclectic, and
most mature music to date. The album's strength is a pleasant surprise
given the departure of guitarist and tunesmith Jason Isbell, who had
become one of the group's most interesting writers, but founding members
Hood and Mike Cooley have risen to the occasion with some excellent
new songs, and bassist Shonna Tucker (who's also Isbell's ex-wife)
steps forward as a composer and lead vocalist on this set with three
great songs about broken hearts and the stuff that follows in their
wake. Opening with "Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife,"
a song by Hood sung from the perspective of a man who has just died
and wonders what will become of his family, Brighter Than Creation's
Dark presents 19 portraits of folks struggling to make sense of an
increasingly chaotic world, ranging from an alcoholic father ("Daddy
Needs a Drink") and a family man struggling to hold onto a little
piece of the American dream ("The Righteous Path") to a
middle-aged guy whose gotten a little too used to being lonely ("Bob")
and an illegal gun dealer running short on options ("Checkout
Time in Vegas"). While the Truckers are still a great full-tilt
hard rock band, Brighter Than Creation's Dark finds them slowing down
and turning down a bit more than usual, and in this case it works
well for them -- the homey twang of "Lisa's Birthday" and
"I'm Sorry Huston" gives new guitarist and pedal steel player
John Neff a chance to shine, and the light acoustic arrangement of
"Perfect Timing" fits the lyrical portrait of a cheerfully
flawed man just fine. And "That Man I Shot" is a blazing,
troubling masterpiece in which a soldier home from Iraq can't tear
away the memory of a man he killed in combat ("That man I shot,
I didn't know him/I was just doing my job, maybe so was he").
It's a tale of the most human consequences of war that's built from
equal portions of anger, confusion, and compassion, and it's hard
to imagine any other band pulling off its fusion of Southern-fried
street smarts and guitar-fueled thunder. It's one of several brilliant
moments on Brighter Than Creation's Dark, and less than three weeks
into 2008 it's hard not to escape the feeling that with this disc
we may already have the best album of the year. ~ Mark Deming, All

Electro Group
Historical Contest
PS, US Rewind to the early 90s - the heyday of the shoegaze scene.
A little-known band from Sacramento called Graham Cracker Cyclone
was all the hometown rage -- they were opening up for bands like Chapterhouse
and Blur at the legendary Cattle Club. GCC featured Verna Brock (of
California Oranges and Holiday Flyer Fame) along with Tim Jacobson
and Ian Hernandez who went on to form Electro Group with Matt Hull.
(Incidentally, Tim and Verna also played stints in Rocketship as well).
Sometime toward the end of Graham Cracker Cyclone's days (1992-94),
Electro Group was formed and the six songs featured here were written
during that beautiful period. Four of these songs were released on
hyper-limited demo cassettes from that period. The other two have
never been released. After GCC split, they tried to find a new sound
away from their Cure-influenced pop to a more distorted and dreamy
sound. As with all Claire's Echo releases, this release is LIMITED

Elias and the Wizzkids
A Little Mess
PS, SWEDEN "A Little Mess is a jangly, bouncy celebration of
the auditorily absurd. Harmonica, flute, howled lyrics and harmonized
choruses crowd the album, which bears more in common with the lovelorn
1950s boy-girl group movement than their less accessible, cool as
ice Svenska indie pop counterparts1. Indirectly addressing this disparity,
their myspace banner announces, "We're though being cool."
Lyrically, Elias and his beloved Wizzkids skew darker. When you're
not on stage hosting a geek-filled love fest...well, sometimes life
kinda sucks. The album tracks the slow, determined progression into
adulthood and everything that makes you lose sleep along the way.
You turn 24, and wonder where your job, house, wife and kids are.
Naturally, steps are taken to rectify the situation. "The job"
finds Elias forced to answer the eternal burning question: What the
hell are you supposed to say/when they ask you to describe yourself
in just three words? In "The Mermaid," Elias works on the
lack of wife problem. However, things don't go as swimmingly as he'd
hoped2. Despite being told there are many other fish in the sea, Elias
moans, You were never a fish/no, you were a mermaid to me. Yeah, can't
help you there dude, I'm still wearing waterwings. The album ends,
if not with the answers on how to avoid this inevitable angst-filled
rite of passage (although "The Dance" does make a good case
for frolicking away the blues), then at least a temporary respite
from that whole growing up thing. Elias tucks himself in at night,
Wizzkids accompaniment slowly fading into the distance, and sighs,
When you're lying in bed and not sleeping yet
and you can still feel the fresh taste of toothpaste, isn't it nice
to turn out the lights and say goodnight? Yes. Yes it is. Just don't
grow up too much before your next album, okay?" - Would-be-hipsters.com

Elias and the Wizzkids
The Dance
PS, SWEDEN The Dance EP includes the single "The dance"
and three exclusive tracks. "Elias & the Wizzkids' single
"The Dance" starts out with Elias Åkesson singing
about how much coffee and tea he's had to drink, which is pretty obvious
from the song's jittery tempo, rushing strums, and caffeine-high piano.
Only Maria Formgren's flute sounds like it's calm and collected, as
if trying to keep this rowdy lot in line. "The Dance" might
be called twee if it slowed down long enough; even the song's Decemberistic
video features a footrace... that breaks into a soccer tournament...
that breaks into a midfield dance party. Elias sings about trying
to outrun some unnamed restlessness: he goes to a coffeehouse, he
goes to a movie, he wanders around, he finally goes home and starts
dancing his heart out. Even his neighbor's threats to call the police
can't bring him down. Here's hoping he doesn't switch to decaf anytime
soon." - Stephen M. Deusner, Pitchfork. "The best music
for me supersedes genre and classification: anything that'll evoke
good memories and hope and truth in me is worth my time, no matter
what the setting or backdrop. Elias & the Wizzkids (MySpace) is
one such band. I don't even want to describe these Swedish chaps with
constraining words like swing and folk and soul (all of which would
be accurate though, I guess). They're just special and precious, and
that should be enough. Hold on to Elias & the Wizzkids. The four-piece
sings charming songs about charming things with charming similes and
metaphors with charming harmonies and harmonicas and driving bass
lines to accompany the whole production. An utterly charming and endearing
band, to say the least. This stuff sounds like it's decades old, maybe
a lost artifact from the singin' folksy 60s or something. The cover
of Oasis' "Wonderwall" is spectacular. It's a refreshing
update -- in a very old way -- of the rather bland song (sorry Gallagher
fans). I can't get enough of "The Dance," and "Autumn
Leaves" is just so, so sweet ... I just want to lay on my bed
and curl up, listening to it for the whole day. Coming from me, such
complimentary words are rare: I'm not one to be taken in by something
as soft and pretty as Elias & the Wizzkids' music, but I've become
a sucker for these guys." - Nik Mercer, Bibabidi.com

Es
Sateenkaarisuudelma
PS, FINLAND Originally released as a 2LP by the (K-RAA-K)³ label
in 2005, Sateenkaarisuudelma is Fonal label-head Sami Sänpäkkilä's
fourth solo album under the name Es. The 2CD release is a trilogy
containing three independent parts: "Sateenkaarisuudelma,"
"Maailmankaari" and "Pianokaari." Sateenkaarisuudelma
was conceived from live songs performed on tour with Black Forest/Black
Sea's Miriam Goldberg on cello, Jeffrey Alexander on guitar and effects,
and Fursaxa's Tara Burke on vocals and keyboard. "Maailmankaari"
I and II were recorded at Boston's WMBR radio station. Featuring rushing
piano cadences and stabs, the sounds of burbling streams and static,
softly chanting vocals, spectral, psychedelic ambience, dark koan/drones
and endlessly looped guitar and electronics, this double album is
a contemplative journey into a sound quite beyond freak-folk or Finnish
quaintness. Other musicians include members of Kemialliset Ystävät,
Kiila and Lau Nau.

Escovedo, Alejandro
Real Animal
PS, US It may be simplistic to describe Alejandro Escovedo's 2006
album The Boxing Mirror as a record inspired by the artist's brush
with death, but given the record's back story -- it was recorded as
Escovedo was recovering from a near-fatal bout with Hepatitis C --
it's hard not to imagine its brave and often dazzling creative ambition
was fueled by Escovedo's knowledge that these could be his last words
as a musician. Two years later, a healthier and stronger Escovedo
returned to the studio to record his ninth studio album, Real Animal,
and by comparison this is a leaner, more tightly focused session;
in fact, this is the strongest rock album Escovedo has made since
his 1997 album with Buick MacKane, The Pawn Shop Years. It's easy
to tag Real Animal as a less ambitious and artful collection than
The Boxing Mirror, but viewed on its own merits this ranks with the
best and most powerful music of Escovedo's career. Like The Boxing
Mirror, which was produced by John Cale, Real Animal was recorded
with a producer who worked with some of Escovedo's primal influences,
Tony Visconti, and his recordings with David Bowie and T. Rex doubtless
helped him connect with Escovedo the smart but swaggering rocker in
a way Cale did not; this set of songs is every bit as intelligent
and emotionally resonant as Escovedo's best work, but it moves with
a taut energy and insistent force that informs even the quieter, acoustic
oriented numbers, such as the bluesy "People (We're Only Gonna
Live So Long)," and the plaintive "Hollywood Hills."
While Escovedo wrote the tunes on Real Animal with Chuck Prophet,
the songs bear his stylistic hallmarks and melodic sensibilities throughout,
and these stories are dotted with places and events from Escovedo's
past -- discovering music as a kid ("Golden Bear"), his
days as a San Francisco punk rocker ("Nun's Song"), flirting
with the New York bohemian scene ("Chelsea Hotel '78"),
and barnstorming with a rock & roll band ("Chip 'N' Tony").
Even when the cues to Escovedo's past aren't obvious, there's too
much heart, soul, and blood in this music to not to have come directly
from his heart, and he's seemingly incapable of singing from any other
place, giving this music an emotional power that reaches down to the
soul. If The Boxing Mirror was a work influenced by the shadow of
mortality, Real Animal is an album about life -- both as survival
and as the faces and moments that fill our days on this Earth. How
many artists could make two masterpieces in a row that are so different?
And how much do you want to bet that Escovedo still has one or two
more records this good in him? ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Huvudet I Sanden
PS, SWEDEN Filled with playfulness, without rose-eyed 80s nostalgia,
Familjen feels very modern. He blends naive 80's melodies, 90's beats
and 00's glitches into a cohesive whole. That combined with his squealing
303's and subtle guitars makes it all sound like it was recorded tomorrow.
"Huvudet I Sanden" is a remix album with remixes of various
Familjen songs by 11 different dance floor geniuses including: 1.
Familjen - Huvudet i sanden, 2. Kasper Bjørke - The danish

"Lip Gloss" remix, 4. Adam Tensta - The savior for Swedish
Hip Hop!, 5. Mike Downey - This American prodigy living in Stockholm

Acoustic guitars in electronic music? But of course! Excellent dreamy

it all. 2007 was The Fields year all over., 8. Pluxus - Familjen says
this sounds like if you have smoked too much weed and just lie there
vomiting your guts out. Nice one!, 9. Boeoes Kaelstigen - Already
a legendary remix on the dance floors. Straight from STHLM subway.
More than one have pointed out these guys as the future of techno.,
10. Tomi Kiiosk - Hässleholm - Finland. Well yeah? Why not!,

Foster, Josephine
This Coming Gladness
PS, UK This is Colorado-based Josephine Foster's (Born Heller, The
Supposed) debut release for Bo Weavil Recordings, and her third full-length
album. This Coming Gladness is the highly-awaited follow-up to 2006's
A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing on Locust. This Coming Gladness is transcendental
fin de siècle songs from one of the great unsung voices and
songwriters of our modern times. Josephine Foster unites rarely united
royal realms: self-penned operatic art songs cast in freely-rendered
blues with electric guitars and drums beating the path along with
harp and piano flourishes. She has a voice that was trained for opera,
but creaks like ancient mountain folk floating out from a dusty Victrola.
She surpasses any "weird-folk" labelling through the sheer
timelessness of her songcraft -- making baroque balladry sound new
yet remembered from some not-too distant shared American past. Joining
her on this recording is electric guitarist Victor Herrero and drummer
Alex Nielson.

Garnett, Gale and the Gentle Reign
S/T
PS, UK Like a lot of folk-pop performers who began their careers in
the early- to-mid-'60s, by the end of the decade Gale Garnett seemed
to have drifted into the rock and psychedelic scene, hooking up with
the band The Gentle Reign to cut these two bizarre albums for CBS.
Singer, journalist, actress (from cult 60s movie Mad Monster Party
to My Big Fat Greek Wedding), star of Scopitones (check Youtube for
some delights!), Gale Zoe Garnett is a marvel and a one-off. Listening
to this album one has to wonder who is she taking on here? Bobby Gentry
with her smoky voice and good looks, Grace Slick with her swooping
rock stylings, or even Frank Zappa with the satirical tone and radio
acting? Gale Garnett is a law unto herself. Rev-Ola is proud to bring
you her two ndeservedly obscure late 60s albums with The Gentle Reign,
a mere smidgen of the woman s immense and unique talent. ** Re-mastered
in top Rev-Ola style by Norman Studio 3 Blake and with beautiful repackaging

Oh! Mighty Engine (ON SALE)
PS, US New solo album from Slowdive/Mojave 3 mainman... In the late
'90s Neil fronted a band called Slowdive, and after a couple of really
good records they split. From there Neil formed his current band Mojave
3, who have released 4 records to date with a few more to come, we
hope. Hard to find 2 bands with more critical accolades, and at the
core of those bands was Neil and his songwriting. Oh! Mighty Engine
is the name of Neil's newest solo record. It is a record that can
handle excessive listens and seems to absorb every mood. It is really
hard to find a record that can make you happy, sad, and can make you
laugh all at once. He writes songs that are very personal to him,
and then allows space for everyone to take their own meaning away
from his lyrics ("Go skies and thrones and wings. And poetry
and things" from the song "Elevenses"). Neil is an
old soul and his newest solo record is exactly who he is. Welcoming,

Blacks On Blondes EP
PS, NORWAY Norwegian act Hiawata! is often compared to bands like

their fetish for the Smiths and other UK acts. 75 OR LESS: "I
welcome the '90s revival Hiawata! and a few other bands (Times New
Viking, Wet Paint) are ushering in with their imperfect musicianship,
bent vocals and inexhaustible energy. The five little songs on Blacks
on Blondes remind me of the years before the internet made finding
good music so easy, when the only real option was scouring mailorder

music would have fit nicely between Sebadoh and Built to Spill on
mixtapes."

Hotpants Romance
It's a Heatwave
PS, US Three girls! Three years! Three chords! Hotpants Romance debut
album 'It's a Heatwave' is shouty, shambolic, garage pop that wears
its heart on its sleeve. On the 14th February 2005 Hotpants Romance
formed two hours before their first gig, with a vow to play once a
year on Valentines Day, after a storming two and a half song set the
audience wanted more. The original plan was dropped in favour of playing
anywhere and everywhere that Anyone would have them. The rest of 2005
had their first tape 'The Greatest Hits' was released on Manchester
DIY label Soft Presents and the 50 copies quickly sold out. Gigs were
played all around the UK with many amazing bands, winning over audiences
with energetic and shambolic live shows. 2006 had Hotpants Romance
playing more shows and releasing their demo EP titled "Lucky
6". In 2007 things started to really come together when the girls
were able to tour with their post punk heroes the Nightingales, only
to be followed by a support slot for the Ting Tings UK tour. In 2008
after a win on a horse called Purple Moon, Nightingale Robert Lloyd
is able to release the first Hotpants Romance album on his Big Print
label. 'It's a Heatwave' crashed into the world, catching the attention
of music press and radio stations to great critical acclaim. The girls
booked a short US East Coast tour with Christie and Emily. They are
currently working on songs for a 7" on Cherryade Records in the
UK, and getting ready for a performance at this years' Athens PopFest
in Athens, Georgia, having their "It's a Heatwave" released

Juvelen
1
PS, SWEDEN Pitchfork 10/10. "More than a year after issuing his
debut EP, the mighty (and yes he's mighty already) Jonas Pettersson
has finally released his debut full-length under the Juvelen moniker.
Entitled "1", it is so, as his debut album, and also, one
of the best flat-out pop albums I have heard in years. The strange
thing about this album though, is that each of it's ten songs could
be a hit single, yet it retains a cohesive feel that a singles collection
does not. Every track is a stand-out, however, for the skeptic I'd
recommend "Money don't talk", "Don't mess" and
"Everytime" to win you over. His seductive, synthesizer
heavy pop/r&b hybrid could-and should-elevate Juvelen to being
a global household name. It's pure pop perfection will make you smile,
and dance, and smile and dance." - Matt Giordano, It's a trap.com.
"Sweden is starting to frighten me. It wasn't enough for the
Scandinavian nation to catch the garage-rock wave or usurp Glasgow's
rightful place as a wellspring for wimpy indie-pop. No, the Swedes
also had to show off their prowess at electro-pop, dreamy epic disco,
and, with lesser success (so far), hip-hop. Stockholm's Juvelen plants
the blue and yellow flag firmly in the terrain of funky, r&b-informed
synth-pop. (His name is Swedish for "jewel," so just be
thankful he didn't choose to annex 1990s folk-pop.) "Hanna",
from Juvelen's recently released debut album, 1, is a good preview
of Juvelen's Prince-ly falsetto and twitchy dancefloor hooks. Produced
by Patrik Berger, who worked on Robyn's self-titled album, "Hanna"
sounds a note of regret to one of Juvelen's own Billie Jeans, with
an arrangement of taut guitars, smooth synths, and propulsive bass
that keeps the track always moving-- just like the insatiable Swedish
pop scene." - Marc Hogan, Pitchfork.

The Adventures Of Keith
PS, UK Keith scored a massive worldwide hit in 1967 with the record
98.6, which featured on our release Keith Ain't Gonna Lie (RPM 273),
and is the subject of an entire column in this months Mojo Magazine.
We are pleased to present Keith s 1969 self penned LP, The Adventures
of Keith, which is reissued for the first time, and is also on CD
for the first time. A striking set which tells the story of a boy,
Charley Cinders, who is born [Waiting to Be]; he's blind [Alone On
The Shore]; the trials and tribulations he has to deal with [Marstrand,
China Clipper, The Problem, Elea-Elea, Trixon's Election] and ultimately
his own demise [Charley Cinders]. In production the music speaks loudly
of Keith's British pop influences and the arrangements twist and turn
in such a way that they could only be from a songwriter enthralled
with Sgt Pepper. All of which explains why The Adventures Of Keith
fell through the cracks in mainstream 1969 America, only to become
a highly sought-after soft rock collectable in recent years. Full

Kid, The
Transient Blood
PS, SWEDEN "The Kid aren't concerned with petty meanings, they
want the consequences, the mixed emotions and the ultra-highs. They
pin down that word by its strictest definition and force it to perform,
reward and pay out. They make it dance until it smiles, spin until
it laughs and I find myself selfishly joining in; foot-tapping, hands
beating and body twitching all over. They make me crave multi-coloured
lights, speakers as large as houses, and a chance to hold hands with
that girl from a John Hughes movie. No problems, no worries; everything
is magically washed away, except that moment between you and her and
an empty dance floor." - Souls on tape.net "The Kid's sophomore
album, Transient Blood. This is BBBD's first time listening to the
Gothenburg quartet, but boy are they good. Imagine Sambassadeur merged
with New Order circa 1987. The Swedes have a penchant for churning
out tracks with heavy, super-catchy bass lines, playful synth riffs,
and rhythm guitar parts that sound so in motion, so fresh and not
boring like rhythm guitar tends to be. And the Kid does it best. The
first single off the record, "Transient Dance," is a stunning
jam that's reminiscent of cutesy European exports like Bonnie &
Clyde and more recent New Order cuts like "Krafty." It's
charming beyond belief, and the rest of the release holds muster well.
Transient Blood is out now,, and you must purchase it if you hope
to have an enjoyable summer ... or if you're looking for that perfect
soundtrack for a house party, BBQ, whatever. It'll work." - Nik

that actively engages a contemporary emotional experience. Originally
self-produced and released as a small LP edition on her own label,

Leinonen, Ville
Suudelmitar
PS, FINLAND Originally released on CD by Poko Records in 2004, this
is the debut full-length release by Ville Leinonen. This is a musical
journey to the shores of imagined inner lands and to the Scandinavian
forests of hopes and dreams. These songs are moments of beauty from
nature, cities and villages. It's autumn in Finland. Freezing wind
blows from Itämeri -- the sea. Rain washes the streets of Helsinki.
Suudelmitar expresses knowing and understanding foreign cultures as
they appear in common everyday life and music. Sweet and nostalgic
flamenco-styled guitar and strident, trilling flute evoke a troubadour,
street musician vibe. Bossa nova grooves are carefully orchestrated
with horns and male and female jazz duets, and there's even a surprising
sitar jam. Laid-back indie lounge for world travellers riding on a
joyful breeze.

Lollipop Shoppe, The
Just Colour
PS, UK One of the MUST HAVE Garage Rock classics! Originally known
as The Weeds and featuring Fred "Deep Soul" Cole, The Lollipop
Shoppe sound amazingly modern! After The Weeds signed to UNI Records,
their new manager, the infamous "Lord" Tim Hudson, insisted
they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current
trend of bizarrely named bubblegum groups. The band's actual recordings
are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of crunching garage rock and
wild psychedelia. The album and its single, You Must Be a Witch, are
period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made
the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The
Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. They were
to regroup as The Weeds once out of "Lord" Tim's clutches,
and Fred Cole was to lead cult band Dead Moon. But it is for this,
the classic Just Colour, that The Lollipop Shoppe are justly acclaimed.

PS, US Equal parts of Garage Punk, Tex-Mex and Surf, "Introducing
Los Peyotes" is their UK album release and stands up to anything

sixties South American Garage Punks that inspired them. Surf-guitar,
Tex-Mex, psychedelic garage-punk and rhythm'n'blues, that seems to
have crossed time and space from the Buenos Aires of 1965. Track listing:

Loved, The
Everything, Anything, Nothing
PS, US Formed in 1996 and disbanded less than two years later, THE
LOVED were an accidentally mysterious pop trio from the unlikely locale
of Louisville, KY. In truth, they were just three ordinary guys making
Beatles-inspired pop with a few nods to some 70s and 80s guitar gods.
Their shows became notorious in Louisville; loud, sweaty affairs where
the crowd knew all the words to songs that weren't yet recorded, much
less released (a remarkable feat in the age before downloading or
record leaks). Available here for the first time, "Everything,
Anything, Nothing" collects the entire recorded history of The
Loved, culled from the only two recording sessions during their brief
existence. Recorded on 8-track analog tape by Kevin Coultas (Rodan),
and remastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Yes, Sufjan
Stevens), this is the way The Loved were always meant to be heard,
and truly the way they should be remembered: three ordinary guys that
just happened to make ten great songs.

Machinefabriek
Dauw
PS, GERMANY Machinefabriek is the alias for Rutger Zuydervelt currently
residing in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Since 2004 Zuydervelt has
unleashed an uncountable number of self-released 3"CD's (his
format of choice) in lovingly designed sleeves (all made by himself).
In the past years some of these releases have been compiled into amazing
albums such as "Slaapzucht" on the Root Strata label, "Weleer"
on Lampse, the "Cello Recycling" 10"/CD on Type Records
and "Bijeen" on Kning Disk. Recent collaborations with Stephen
Vietiello (on the 12K label), Freiband, Steinbrüchel and other
likeminded artists have expanded the horizon veritably. Machinefabriek's
music has been remixed by the likes of Xela, Lesser, Svarte Greiner,
Alva Noto, Pita, Kim Cascone, Ben Frost, Black To Comm and others.
Only few Machinefabriek material has been recorded specifically for
an album release but these have always been stand-outs in the vast
catalogue. Both "Marijn" on Lampse and "Ranonkel"
on Burning World Records were classic recordings, squeezing a large
amount of what people love about Zuydervelt's music into one album,
at the same time giving him the space to expand on new ideas. Likewise
"Dauw" is one of Zuydervelt's most subtle & quiet yet
refined works. Mainly built around small but gorgeous melodies of
piano and guitar playing and the crackling sound of dusty vinyl samples,
these songs slowly build into intensive hymn-like angel choirs of
sheer heavenly beauty. Zuydervelt's output often has drawn comparisons
to the likes of Fennesz, Godspeed, Arvo Pärt, Basinski, Tim Hecker,
Phillip Jeck, Mogwai and Earth, which is certainly not all wrong and
some of these have been influences in the early stages of his career
but he has since developed a strong and individual language all of
his own. Mastered by Guiseppe Ielasi with elegant artwork by Zuydervelt
himself; metallic print on grey cardboard stock.

Mate
Ventajas De Ser Optimista
PS, SPAIN 'Ventajas de ser optimista' (Advantages of being an optimist),
is a collection of singable stories crafted by Alberto Matesanz (aka
Mate) singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, who has created
a lot of excitement in the indie pop community. Personal and unpretentious,
Mate generate luminous pop songs with a deep sense of longing and
nostalgia. This is a mature, intelligent pop record that proofs that
there's life in the pop underground yet, a cause for serious celebration.
Recorded mostly at Calle Mayor studio, Alberto has received the remarkable
support of Ramón Leal in the recording of percussions and drums.
Again Mr Mate has traveled to the Alex the Great Studio in Nashville,
Tennessee (USA) to gather the magic touch of Brad Jones who has added
subtleties to the songs creating absolute pop splendor. The final
touch has the mastering signature of another renowned prodigy Mr.
Jim DeMain's who resides in his spaceship (YesMaster studio/Nashville).
The purity of the harmonies, the very preciousness and melancholy
of Matesanz's songwriting will attract fans of French sounds (Delerm,
Biolay, Marchet, Dominique A, Daho...), Sarah records, Beatles, Belle
and Sebastian, Kings of Convenience...

Michael Night
I'm Not Entirely Clear How I Ended Up Like This
PS, UK "I'm Not Entirely Clear How I Ended Up Like This"
is the debut UK release for Dublin/Berlin beat combo Michael Knight
and represents the logical progression in their ongoing musical argument
that influences as diverse Beethoven, Bach and Bacharach can make
compelling bedfellows. The result is 11 slices of the most irresistibly
sophisticated pop music and, as further evidence of their genius,
the album has been released with instrumental and vocal versions of
each song. Imagine Modesst Mussorgsky backing Jens Lekman and you're
halfway there. The presence of Brian O'Shaughnessy (The Clientele,
Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine) on mixing duties should give an
indication of the sonic palette on offer: sweeping strings, haunting
harmonies and dramatic mood swings. The Cd comes in a double Cd gatefold
digipak, complete with liner notes & lyrics. REVIEWS: "Why
Michael Knight aren't already huge is both baffling and beguiling;
but sooner or later these songs will be discovered. I may as well
say it in advance, then; I told you so". SoundsXP. "Supremely
beautiful songs, which have a heart, a soul, a wry sense of humor
and none of that upsetting necessity to make every lyrical couplet
rhyme" In Dublin.

Paavoharju
Laulu Laakson Kukista
PS, FINLAND This is the highly-anticipated second full-length release
on Fonal Records from Finland's Paavoharju, a collective formed around
two brothers -- Lauri and Olli Ainala and their troupe of associates.
The group is a collective project of ascetic born-again Christians.
Laulu Laakson Kukista (A Song About Flowers of the Valley) evokes
the sounds of raindrops falling on a sheet metal roof melting together
with an old television's random dot-pattern noise. Backwards pianos,
backwards vocals, tilted organ and baroque beats lean against sweeping
operatic soundscapes and gossamer back-porch folk singalongs. Leena
Uotila's soft voice echoes in empty, dusty rooms. Cat-owls gather
to the skies, apple trees are blooming and waves rock a barrel against
the pier. Suddenly all this started to form esoteric mildew to cassette's
magnetic tape. Mind-bending devotional rock-opera from the deepest
Finnish forests. THE ONION: "Paavoharju is part of an intriguing
scene that subsists in Finland but seems to hail from a spirit world
where the natural and the ethereal blur. The latest of several notable
offerings from the Finnish label Fonal, Laulu Laakson Kukista finds
the group studiously adrift, with impressionistic glimmers of sound
(bird chirps, static, warbly chimes) situated within delicate songs
that draw on everything from acoustic folk to the kind of smeary polyglot
pop favored by Animal Collective and especially Gang Gang Dance. The
group functions as a collective led by two born-again Christians,
but the sounds they make suggest Christians of an extraordinarily
mystical sort."

Pause for the Jet
PS, GERMANY Since 1995 Daniel Padden has been a member of Volcano

Wound's United Diaries label, Textile and Beta-Lactam Ring Records.
After his move to Glasgow he started The One Ensemble Of Daniel Padden
as an outlet for his solo recordings with releases on Catsup Plate,
Secret Eye and Textile. When The One Ensemble slowly metamorphosed
into a band of its own, Padden started to record his solo output under
his birth name, with last year's "The Isaac Storm" on the
Ultra Exzema label being the first seminal result. Over the years
Padden has developed a strong fascination for obscure musics from
all over the world (re his recent "Epiphanies" article for
The Wire magazine): mouth organ love-songs from Thailand, The Ramayana
Monkey Chant from Bali, Khene pieces from Laos; so-called world music
from Burundi to Bulgaria. Combining these interests with his love
for British Folk and Art Rock (This Heat, Robert Wyatt), Kraut Rock
(Faust), Free Jazz, the surreal collage techniques of Nurse With Wound
and the odd humour of The Residents, he has developed a totally unique
and highly personal musical vision without ever sounding overambitious
or directionless. Gorgeous song-writing is seamlessly transformed
into pure fuzz or string drones, suddenly interrupted by some improvised
reeds or collapsing percussion, all within the blink of an eye, and
never losing its natural flow, "Pause for the Jet" is already
an auspicious aspirant for our "Record of the Year".

Beautiful Future
PS, UK New 2008 import-only album from The Primals! PITCHFORK: "Beautiful
Future is an especially rich title coming from a band with such a
sloppy past, but its concise, laser-focussed 10-song tracklist-- bearing
the pop-golden touch of producers Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, the Rapture)
and Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn and John, Lykke Li)-- suggests Primal
Scream's latest high is sobriety. The opening title track features
the most joyous, clear-headed melody they've sung since Screamadelica's
"Movin' on Up", but in a much different dressing. Here,
their Exile-era Stones influence yields to the cheeky glam of Sparks,
from the jaunty piano riff, hand claps and ascending chorus, to Bobby
Gillespie's wry commentary on middle-class privilege: "Congratulations/
You're living the dream/ In the dead heart of the control machine."

Q65
Nothing But Trouble: The Best Of...
PS, UK From Den Haag (The Hague) in Holland, Q65 were among the country's
wildest beat groups of the 1960s. Their firebrand approach to the
beat and rhythm n blues boom was the opposite of what most of the
country's successful pop group fraternity were putting over at the
time; best represented with the unpolished, raw intensity of "You're
The Victor", their 1966 debut for Decca which shook up the charts
and caused shockwaves throughout the nation's living rooms. They continued
to crack the top end of the Dutch pop charts with killer singles such
as "The Life I Live", and "I Despise You"; took
part in a crazy record company promotional stunt crossing the sea
from England in a rubber dinghy, and in Revolution, created one of
the best debut LPs of the era. The group split up early and although
they would make several comebacks as Q65, and also as Circus, and
continue to make several records well into the 1970s, the initial
magic had gone. To this day the power and impenetrable charm of the
original Q65 remains unsurpassed. ** Visually re-mastered in the usual
huge Rev-Ola style! ** Beautifully packaged with oodles of rare photos
and memorabilia! ** In-depth liner notes by Sir Lenny Helsing with
input from the band themselves! ** An absolute 100% necessity for
all fans of 60s garage, R & B, beat, psych.

Countless Centuries Fled into the Distance Like So Many Storms
PS, US SONIC YOUTH'S LEE RANALDO was part of the original TABLE OF
THE ELEMENTS "Guitar Series" in 1993; now he returns with
"Countless Centuries Fled into the Distance Like So Many Storms".
It's an epic earful, replete with shimmering textures and an inimitable
charging clangor. With ecstatic, rocking squalor, he summons some
dazzling shronk, reminiscent of early SY, the soaring drone of John
Cale, and even the looping orientalia of Dream Syndicate-era La Monte
Young. So duck and cover, as Lee fires an impeccably aimed fusillade
across the screaming fields of sonic love.

Airforms
PS, US Limited to 600. Sold out quickly in 2005. Line just found 100
in storage. Airforms was first presented at the Scottsdale Museum
of Contemporary Art [ Scottsdale, Arizona ] in April of 2004. The
work was inspired by a group of experimental houses designed by Wallace
Neff in the 1940's using a process he called airform construction.
The houses were built by spraying concrete over an inflated balloon
structure. Inspired by the nautilus sea shell, the houses were an
investigation into the aesthetic possibilities of structures formed
by air, and the psychological effects of living inside a kind of organic
space. The installation attempted to reflect Neff's ideas in the use
of air as an inspirational skeleton and physical presence in the construction
of the forms as well as the audio. Five objects were built by laying
plaster over small balloons. The sound work was created using the
transformed sound of a breath blown through an old wooden organ pipe.
Both essentially built from Roden's own breath. The original multi-channel
audio work consisted of five small speakers, each placed within a
single plaster form. The version for this cd has been re-organized
for stereo listening. The lack of narrative structure attempts to
create an audio space in line with Neff's architectural interests
in the airform projects. Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist
from Los Angeles. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture,
film/video, and sound installation.

Rosenholm, Eleanoora
Vainajan Muotokuva
PS, FINLAND This is the debut full-length by Eleanoora Rosenholm.
Eleanoora Rosenholm comes from Pori, Finland and is a project began
by Noora Tommila, Pasi Salmi and Mika Rättö. They crafted
a genius pop album with murderous lyrics inside the dark stone walls
that surround SS-Palace studio. The time came to take the show on
the road and the band evolved into a full 8-piece. Weird, almost avant
synth-pop harmonies with creepily-sweet Finnish vocals, sometimes
vocoded. Combining the best of karaoke-backed dance tracks with propulsive
'80s sheen and tastes of Bow Wow Wow/Lizzy Mercier Descloux-esque
tribe-pop irreverence. Totally addictive and hook-ridden, like you
can't stop eating candy -- this is weird-disco any housewife serial
killer would be proud to dance to. PITCHFORK: "Think you might've
had Fonal's M.O. figured by now, didja? Eleanoora Rosenholm shatters
all of those preconceptions as a trio of veterans and a handful of
friends convene to craft an art-disco rollercoaster that defies much
of the rest of the label's catalog."

PS, UK Virtuoso guitarist Sabicas exported flamenco in its most thrilling

his astonishing artistry - the rhythmic drive, the dizzying speed

and poise of his touch. Sabicas's dedication and perfectionism established
the yardstick against which both his contemporaries and the next generation
of guitarists were obliged to measure themselves. He almost single

most original artists. By far his most approachable and even refined

find a place in his bizarre universe.

Smile Down Upon Us
Smile Down Upon Us
PS, UK Smile Down Upon Us is a very modern kind of band. Comprising
Phelan Sheppard, the duo behind celebrated album Harps Old Master,
and Japanese artist moomLooo, it's a project that crosses cultural
and musical boundaries. And, for the duration of recording their self-titled
debut album, it existed solely on the Internet, as the three have
never met. The band came about when Keiron Phelan, a prodigious MySpace
trawler, came across moomLooo's page and her enchanting recordings
for Japan's Clay label. He sent a message introducing himself, and
she responded saying she admired his work too. "None of us had
any reservations about working together from the word go," says
Phelan. "It just seemed natural - a touch of kismet." Soon,
they began sending ideas back and forth on the Internet, sound files
whizzing between Tokyo and London. Though initially a project to occupy
Phelan whilst David Sheppard was writing his much-anticipated Brian
Eno biography, On Some Faraway Beach, Phelan's long-time fellow group
member soon came into the fold. The pair set up in East London's Soup
Studio, in the basement of ukulele shop Duke Of Uke. There, they purloined
parlour guitars, banjos and ukes from the shop and recorded them into
ProTools, blending old and new, as well as east and west. Over in
Japan, at home and at Tokyo's Naturebliss studio, moomLooo recorded
her largely electronic parts and field recordings, adding delicately
captivating vocals and spoken word, half in English, half in Japanese.
Soon, they were writing parts for each other, playing to each other's
strengths. "I don't speak any Japanese and moom's English is
so-so," says Phelan. "In order to understand each other,
we had to use simple language, and our emails began to look like a
dialogue between two hyper-enthusiastic nine year-olds. We could only
discuss things in a very 'primary colour' way and the music seemed
to become extremely vivid too. Dave and I had the idea that this was
sounding like a Chagall painting looks. That seemed a really strong
and suitable feeling for the band, so we pushed it along that road."
Between the language barriers, time differences and hours downloading
files, the process of creating the album took almost 14 months. When
moomLooo emailed the last part over, it came with a recorded message
introducing herself to the pair. "It's been a very mysterious
process," says Phelan. "I email moom all the time, but I
know very little about her. I've never met her, never spoken to her.
I don't know how old she is or what she does for a living. None of
the usual things. And I think we all found this an intriguing situation."
The resulting album has a strange kind of magic, an essence running
through it. Blending warm wooden instruments with moomLooo's icy vocal,
it sounds modern at the same time as aged, distinctly Japanese but
rooted in the conventions of modern, electronic folk music. More structured
than Phelan Sheppard's usually instrumental music, it reveals a new,
accessible side to their work, one that's sure to appeal to fans of
Bjork, Deerhoof and lovers of beautiful, beguiling music everywhere.
The next step in the evolution of Smile Down Upon Us is to turn it
into a functioning live band. In Japan, moomLooo has assembled a couple
of musicians to recreate the songs until she finally meets with Phelan
and Sheppard this summer, when they intend to stage what's bound to
be some very special live shows indeed. "It would be quite something
to have a Smile Down Upon Us (East) and a Smile Down Upon Us (West),"
says Phelan. "Dave and I have never met or spoken to these musicians,
don't even know their names. But soon we'll be able to look on YouTube
and see them playing our songs! It's a weird but pleasant feeling."

are introducing their work once again through noble label. Tenniscoats
is the Tokyo duo of Saya and Ueno Takashi and friends. The open stance
of this duo as seen through their emajikick label and their rainbow
of collaborations with artists has won the hearts of passionate fans
the worldwide. Last year saw sequential release of Tenniscoats music,
Totemo Aimasho from Australia's Room40 and Tan-Tan Therapy from Sweden's
Hapna. Now, they have welcomed Secai, a duo formed by friends of majikick,
Daisuke Namiki a.k.a. NSD and Takeshi Hiruma a.k.a. DASMAN. Together
with their partners of creation, the artists have completed Tenniscoats
& Secai a collaboration album finished after nearly 2 years of
patient brewing. Most of the pieces for this album were created through
sessions with the recording, composition, and songwriting added along
the way. In addition to the abstract track making which is a signature
of Secai work, NSD works together with Saya to create almost half
of the lyrics, and DASMAN sings in the chorus and plays bass for an
album that unleashes the creative energy of both artists. Combined
with Saya's mixing and song writing and Ueno Takashi's poetic playing
and inspirations, this album is an original piece of work that highlights
the talents of each artist in an organic mixture of sound. Though
covered with a fluffy and obscure sound image, the album gives an
impression of a crystal world with unlimited clarity. This world is
filled with Saya_fs innocent voice, magical melody, and deep lyrics.

reality will lure listeners into another world. Here, you will find
music of freedom and beauty that is sure to bring tears to your eyes.

sacrifice and enough guts and grit to make even your grandmother pay

Frowny Frown
PS, US Between 1988 and 1998, JOHN TERRILL (co-founder of the late
'70s new/no wave DANCING CIGARETTES) recorded this album and made
a few copies for close friends and for mailing to musical heroes.
In another era, it could have stood next to Scott Walker or Michael
Hurley's early albums or even Randy Burns' LPs on ESP Disk. It's an
out-of-time classic that mixes honey baked orchestration, acoustic
soul, and pop-psychedelia into cracked and spellbinding songs. Now
reissued for all and remastered with a bonus track from 1984. "I
feel this album is a little gem. Lyrically-a man up against it ("Frowny
Frown") as opposed to (Smiley Smile), but still leaning towards
humor, kindheartedness, and no bitterness within the adversity. A
very feeling album and all kinds of sonically interesting things.

his own circumstances had been different. Beach Boys meet Mothers

Overstaying The Welcome
PS, SWEDEN Overstaying the welcome is TIACs sophomore album. "TIAC
sounds sort of like old Magnetic Fields on a very happy day with an
extra big dose of guitar pop, synth love, and more forward vocals.
So maybe it's not all that Magnetic Fields-ish. There's a little bit
of the Cure in there, but there's too much gloss and shine and production
to justify a true comparison to the original mopers. How about this
one: Orange Juice plus the Cure plus Altered Images. Yeah, maybe that's
a good way to put it. Light on the Orange Juice, heavy on the Altered
Images. Regardless, the band's a tremendous amount of fun. An endearing
sound that's filled with sexy hooks, excited bass riffs, and a bombastic
wall of sound that washes over you like a pleasant summer breeze."

Vapnet
Döda Fallet
PS, SWEDEN Pitchfork 8.2/10. "According to songwriter and guitarist
Martin Abrahamsson, Döda Fallet is Vapnet's first traditional
popskiva-- its first true pop album. He created the bulk of the band's
excellent full-length debut, Jag Vet Hur Man Väntar, and the
follow-up, Något Dåligt Nytt Har Hänt, on his home
computer, but with the addition of the band's first full-time drummer,
Vapnet decided to record its third album in a proper studio, hiring
Mattias Glavå to produce. However, Döda Fallet (which translates
to "the dead fall") represents no dramatic musical sidestep.
Instead, it continues in roughly the same headphones-pop vein as their
previous efforts: The band still draws from the formalism of Swedish
pop and the florid movement of Swedish dance to locate all sorts of
musical possibilities in its intricate arrangements. Glavå,
who worked on recent albums by Sambassadeur and Jens Lekman, adds
just a touch of reverb to the instruments, giving the songs an added
depth of sound that reinforces both their exuberance and their melancholy...In
the past Abrahamsson has either set Vapnet's songs to programmed beats
or shared percussion duty with singer Martin Hanberg, so the presence
of a live drummer makes a big difference on Döda Fallet, investing
"Nyår" and closer "Det Rör Inter Hjärtat"
with a sense of danceable motion. That sense of pop purity is essential
to the band's appeal, at least to non-Swedish-speakers. At its best,
Döda Fallet sounds like pop in its ideal form." - Stephen

Breaking Point: 20 Hard-Edged Beat Diamonds
PS, UK This is the Psychic Circle label's second volume of prime beat
mostly from the '60s UK, with a couple of excursions into Europe.
So here we all are once again, gathered around the notional Dansette.
A tottering stack of vinyl awaits our investigation. Is it gear or
is it grotty? Fear not, for we do not have the burden of uncertain
critique thrust upon us. All the sounds presented within have passed
aural muster, and are straining to enthrall the listener. Unearthed,
dusted down, and shoved frugging into the spotlight, we have a top
Liverpool band recording under a pseudonym, a British soap star, a
Dutch outfit who briefly featured a future UK prog-rock superstar,
and a band of hard-rockin' sailors, plus a whole lot more. Specially
compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head,
Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Liverpool Five, Shorty
& Them, James Tamlin, The Muldoons, The MI5, The Dennisons, Lee
Grant & The Capitols, Hamilton King, Tages, The Dee Tees, The
Circles, The Shakers, The Mike Cotton Sound, Lee Curtis & The

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album!
It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun
and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene
of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and
The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved
in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The
Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great
acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah
has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening
act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with
Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this
time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations
and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is
released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ
The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland,
where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque
on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether
very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue
sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References

a slow-motion transformation - plate tectonics, wired for sound. Aural
mountains melt into seas; yet icy barrens yield to breathing jungles
of detail. The single, sprawling track may evoke decay, dissolution
and destruction, but underfoot are tendrils of inexplicable joy. Belong
sings a lullaby of obliteration, and the paradox it embodies would
make both Kevin Shields and Tony Conrad proud: crushing melancholia
and shuddering euphoria, inexorably intertwined.

The Digital Space Race (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, IRELAND Derek Carr is one of Ireland's unsung heroes of soulful
techno. Derek has been making music for almost 2 decades now (if you
include his early experiments as a 14 year old with a Casio sampler).
Following many releases over the past 7 years on a wide variety of
electronic labels now comes his anticipated debut album for Psychonavigation
Records.. 'The Digital Space Race' compiles ten tracks of sublime
electronic music that can be enjoyed equally in the stoned privacy
of your home or on the dance floor. For fans of John Beltran,B12,The

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9th)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele
have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s
as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass
version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their
albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost
Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions.
In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial
and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach,
part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity,
light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element
of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered
1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer
hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency
despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement
or trend... It's tempting to be patient and call this disc a stopgap
on the way to a triumphant debut full-length. But EP is plenty substantial
as is; at 25 minutes, it's only a few shy of Nouns or, more to the
point, any number of psych-rock classics from decades past."

Disciplines, The
Smoking Kills (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, NORWAY PRE-ORDER @ $15.00, regular price $17.00. New band featuring
KEN STRINGFELLOW. The Disciplines--a razor sharp, fuel efficient jet
machine blending a full-on, rock blast worthy of AC/DC with anthemic
melodies as sweet and singable as ABBA; a place where indie-level
humility and charm meets a stadium-sized musical reach. Formed by
American indie icon Ken Stringfellow (the Posies, R.E.M., Big Star,
Lagwagon etc.) and the three instrument-wielding members of Norwegian
chart successes Briskeby, the Disciplines have just released their
first album, SMOKiNG KiLLS (Voices Music & Ent., Norway/Denmark).
The album has already drawn rave reviews in the Norwegian national
media; the singles "Best Mistake" and "Oslo" are
bona fide chart hits; the band has been the subject of its own TV
special and is on most of the major festivals in Norway this summer.
The band was asked by Snow Patrol to support their London show last
year; R.E.M. included the track "Yours for the Taking" on
their Q magazine mix CD and has tagged the band to support their Scandinavian
stadium shows in September. Coming up: a feature on Ken in Elle Scandinavia;
festival and club dates in Netherlands, Spain and France; and a partnership
with Chess Mobile that will put the band on screens large and small
this summer (Chess will release a limited edition Disciplines phone
that will come pre-loaded with the album and other features specific
to the band). The band has played in Helsinki & Berlin and is
looking at hitting both North and South America in the next year.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

time to develop different themes & to let them evolve"

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail.
A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic
e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This
all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired
by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space
and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia.
Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a
matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do
something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical,
or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment"
to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the
titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken
kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken
7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their
own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was
done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started
by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate
work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance
collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as
Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek
in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work
for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches)
and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations
by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many
more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel,
Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron
Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is
a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include
Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub
Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher
(A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations,
photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum
52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group
exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial
of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous
musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew
Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Don t Be A Stranger (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm three-part
harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound
rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads
to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel,
blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate
joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially
early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy
and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique.

Music Go Music
Reach Out (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 5TH)
PS, US Like a bolt from Zeus, MUSIC GO MUSIC have struck again with
their new 12" single, 'Reach Out.' This outing finds them exploring
a darker side of pop music; the place where Deep Purple's brute force
meets the Carpenter's tragic wistfulness, where Blondie's power-hooks
cross melodic swords with Meat Loaf's drama-rock theatrics. They've
expanded their palette considerably, yet the sound is unmistakably
theirs, and the magic of it points the way to the light at the end
of the tunnel. 'Reach Out' is the monologue of a would-be savior,
offering to lift us from the pit of despair. It treks from Logan's
Run ambience to proto-metal riffing to disco-gallop to TV detective
funk and back again.

Estra (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 5TH)
PS, US NORMANOAK has another piece of vinyl to share with the world,
a true follow up to last year's "A Double Gift of Tongues".
This new album is called "Estra", named after a powerful
horned goddess whom Normanoak has been busy invoking recently in small
performance spaces around the country. Everything was recorded in
his bedroom in Bloomington, Indiana, on three different tape machines.
The music on "Estra" shows more variety than any of his
previous efforts. Chugging rock songs burn up into soft, dark dirges
that feature a uniquely made-up language code. Screaming minute-long
hardcore songs fade into freaky, fucked instrumentals. There is even
a song which curses the current state government, and their excessive
logging of Normanoak's home forests of Southern Indiana. Throughout
these 14 pieces, Normanoak takes on many personalities, such as his
alter-ego Poisonoak. Over time the listener can begin to notice the
shifts in perspective that the singer makes. Normanoak is more than
just another musician. His work is pure sorcery at its most successful.

Taylor Hollingsworth. The result is his first solo album in thirteen
years, following "Water" (1993), "Here's To Special
Treatment" (1994), and "Soundtrack To My Movie" (1995).
In that time, he's recorded and performed in Commander Venus, Park

Here With Me (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US Recorded with John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth), "Here

The Mountain", but is packed with no less of an emotional wallop.
Jennifer's songs have never before sounded this crafted or hit the
listener with such immediacy. LP contains MP3 coupon. Look for tour
dates supporting Wilco, Jamie Lidell, and Son, Ambulance. Headlining
tour in the fall. "A rush of everything you ever liked about
indie songwriters: substantial songwriting, crystalline vocals, sumptuously
simple pop...you have to love an artist who reminds you of everyone
but defies comparison" - Time Out NY.

the better of the 80s college rock cognoscenti and Trouser Press favorites.

Prints
Just Thoughts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 5TH)
PS, US Quickly following their debut full-length, PRINTS return to
stir the pot with a little more pop, their usual dose of psychedlia
and an intoxicating amount of dance. Once again produced at home by
multi-instrumentalists Zac Nelson and KENSETH THIBIDEAU, the songs
here were originally conceived as b-sides for a proposed single for
"Too Much Water" from the group's eponymous debut. By the
time three new songs were completed, they stood too strong on their
own to be pushed out as b-sides, so the decision was made to forfeit
the single and instead offer the songs as a stand-alone EP. Meanwhile,
DFA cofounder and Hercules and Love Affair producer Tim Goldsworthy
fired up his new alter-ego Thee Loving Hand for an epic super-funk
remix of a pair of Prints tracks, "Pretty Tick" and "Meditation"
(featuring, among other things, the funk bass skills of !!!'s Tyler
Pope). To top it off, acclaimed visual artist Toben Seymour directed
an eye-popping video for "Too Much Water," which is included
here on the Enhanced CD portion of the disc.

Discoballs: A Disco Tribute To Pink Floyd [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE
AUGUST 12TH)
PS, US Back in 1979, way before the flood of tribute albums swamped
your local record store's bins, this curiosity featuring disco versions
of Pink Floyd songs came out on Warner Bros. Now, usually when you
put the words 'disco' and 'tribute' together in the same phrase, the
result is not going to be pretty. What does, however, make this album
reissue-worthy is that two of the folks behind this, Claude Engel
and Jannick Top, were members of the legendary French prog group Magma,
and they were no doubt instrumental in the adventurous choice of tunes
on this record. Sure, 'Money' and 'Have a Cigar', which was a minor
hit, are not such a stretch, but disco versions of 'Interstellar Overdrive',
'Arnold Layne' and 'One of These Days'?! Not even Syd Barrett in his
wildest dreams could have imagined such a thing! It's easily the most
danceable Pink Floyd album ever!

Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio
work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer
based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews:
"a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling"
[The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual"
[Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep
Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett,
my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very
aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this
to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter
of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired
me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and
positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors
in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition
came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages
that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was
given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground.
Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish
folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother
was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to
take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short
rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed
a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded
separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello
EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33,
45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously,
and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience
moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and
extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

perfect equipoise between an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly
exotic future. "England's lounge-pop heroes" - Blender.

of the 90s. No one else managed to duplicate their retro-futurist
harmony" - Fader.

Sweet, Matthew
Sweet Sunshine Lies (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE! New album from Matthew Sweet joined
by Susanna Hoffs, Ric Menck and Richard Lloyd. Pretty Parasolly, dontcha
think? Without warning, this consummate artist just may have made
the album of his life, not by consciously trying to recapture the
brilliance of his three milestones, Girlfriend, Altered Beast and
100% Fun, but simply by following his big heart, while hot-wiring
the process between inspiration and execution so that there's no longer
any distance between them. With tongue only partly in cheek, Matthew
describes the new record's sound as "power-pop-folk-rock-psychedelic-melodic-singer-songwriter-type
stuff." That turns out to be an accurate general description,
but the real intrigue is in the details. By turns achingly melodic
and drivingly visceral, Sunshine Lies swirls with relatable emotion
and bad-ass attitude, seamlessly incorporating the artist's expansive
aesthetic from one end (poetry) to the other (noise). On Sunshine
Lies, Sweet intermixes his distinctive brand of shimmering folk rock
("Byrdgirl," "Daisychain," "Around You Now")
and signature goosebump ballads ("Feel Fear," "Pleasure
Is Mine," "Back of My Mind"), with the album's primary
impulse, what he refers to as "the crazy songs." These are
heady, arrangement-based pieces where anything goes in terms of tone,
texture and performance-the mindblowing "Time Machine,"
the balls-to-the-wall "Room to Rock," the brawny "Flying"
and the Who-like "Let's Love."

PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another
skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The
Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow
Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately,
Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot,
given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born
folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

Vandervelde, David
Waiting For The Sunrise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 5TH)
PS, US Just as there are albums that artists were born to make, there
are albums that labels were born to release. "Waiting For The
Sunrise" is one of those albums for both DAVID VANDERVELDE and
SECRETLY CANADIAN. Upon first laying the needle down, the listener
is greeted by a warm wash of sounds that seems to breeze in from decades
back. Vandervelde's singular voice emerges from the drums and keys
with "When the morning comes, I will be fine, I will be fine,
I will be fine" and you're pretty damn sure he will be. The tones
may be familiar, but his voice as an artist is his own, new and wholly
contemporary, and you feel lucky to be here to watch the emergence.
Critics marveled at Vandervelde's songwriting on his debut "Moonstation
House Band", the mini-album which had the aesthetic wherewithal
to hold its own side-for-side with the classics as a late night jam
record. Spin magazine remarked that "at a pipsqueakish 22 years
old, David Vandervelde is already generating the kind of indie-net
whispering that musicians twice his age pine for." And on songs
such as "California Breezes", "Someone Like You"
and "Lyin' In Bed", it's clear that the material on this
first long-player from Vandervelde is of a higher order - lyrically
more personal and stripped down. "Waiting For The Sunrise"
is the beautiful result of having extended himself both musically
and emotionally.
