Antennas
Sins
PS, SWEDEN New album from the artists formerly known as Novak (Sweden). Further updating their retro-60s sound for a brave new world, Antennas have taken things to brilliant extremes. A collection of shimmering, melancholic soul-pop epics. Blissed-out sonics and glossed-out electronics, and produced by Existensminimum's Magnus Henriksson. Accolades include: "Totally off the hook, pure-pop genius...gorgeous melodies, big swells of orchestration, and Björkman's high, lilting vocals." (Music For Robots) and "There is so much going on in [these songs], so many layers: strings, horns, whirring electronics, handclaps, and vibraphone... Throw in the vocal drama of Jeff Buckley and we've really got something here." (3Hive). **FREE 2-song CDSingle by labelmates Black Belt with purchase of this CD, while supplies last.**

The album documents unforgettable moments in the history of jazz with Chet Baker in top form.180gm LP.

Barzelay, Eef
Bitter Honey
PS, US Clem Snide is often seen -- justly or not -- as a vehicle for the songs and singular voice of Eef Barzelay. Bitter Honey finds him out on his own for the first time, and it truly is a solo album -- as it features just his voice, an acoustic guitar, and the usual balancing act of quirkiness and heartbreak. Lyrically, there are a couple of tunes that tip the scales a bit too much on the quirky side, like the opening "Ballad of Bitter Honey," which casts the singer as a female hip-hop groupie and contains the timeless rhyme "That was my ass you saw bouncing next to LudacrisIt was only on-screen for a second but it's kinda hard to miss." That's really a tough way to start an album, but Barzelay recovers with some typically fine songs -- the desolate "Words That Escape Me," the tears-in-my-beer ballad "I Wasn't Really Drunk," the spare and yearning "Escape Artist Blues" -- that are as moving and arresting as his best work. His cover of "Joy to the World" is nice, too. The musicians who back Barzelay in Clem Snide are an underrated strength of the group, and about halfway through this record you start to miss their usual subtle and rich backing. It would have been nice to hear what they would have done with "Ballad of Bitter Honey" or the vaudeville-styled "Let Us Be Naked." That is a minor qualm, though, and the album is so short in length that it never wears out its welcome. It doesn't rate with the best of Clem Snide, but Bitter Honey is a pleasant diversion and a nice way to fill the space between the group's releases. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide

Battiato, Franco
Fetus
PS, US F. B. moved into the 1970s on the crest of the progressive rock wave. This 1972 impossibly strange record inhabits that nether world of pop music, electronics, politics and experimental rock. Fetus is an album beyond all definition. It's a masterpiece of daring and wild risks that work every single time. Battiato takes us through eight uniquely super-detailed songs that tug at the heart strings as no other experimental record ever could. Liner notes by Jim O'Rourke.
Water-168

Battles
Tomorrow's Eager Hands
PS, US NOT THE US BATTLES. Canada's Battles got there first w/their 2001 debut "Lycanthropy" on Blue Curtain. 5 years later the Vancouver combo re-enters the sphere w/another album of forward thinking guitar-based pop cut from the same underappreciated cloth as Feelies, Embarrassment, Bryan Ferry & even Mayo Thompson. That's a hell of a poker game they're joining there! Mainman Stephen Wood's time as the ax-wielder in DESTROYER influenced his lyrical approach to songwriting, but unlike other Vancouveranians, he's not afraid to open up & let his love of prog shine! Also shares a member w/BLACK MOUNTAIN. "A Lennon-inspired collection of pop grandeur."

Chapterhouse
Whirlpool
PS, UK Inspired by My Bloody Valentine and Ride, Chapterhouse were part of the early 90s first-wave shoegaze scene. They were on the more pop/rock end of the spectrum, often mixing in the Manchester baggy beat with their wall-of-sonic-guitar-fuzz alongside peers The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, and Blur. Chapterhouse created records to stimulate both mind and feet. This newly expanded reissue of their classic debut Whirpool, includes all the b-sides from the singles 'Pearl', 'Falling Down' and the 'Sunburst EP', along with 'Die Die Die' which was originally only available on a free record that came with the vinyl version of the album and is on CD for the first time. Produced by the band along side Robin Guthrie [Cocteau Twins], John Fryer [This Mortal Coil], Stephen Hague [New Order] and Ralph Jezzard, and featuring guest vocals from Rachel Goswell [Slowdive], with liner notes from music journalist and long-time associate Andrew Perry, along with the lyrics in full [documented here for the first time], photos, memorabilia and other clippings from the bands personal archive, and images of all of the releases featured on the album. TRACK LISTING: 1/ BREATHER 2/ PEARL 3/ AUTOSLEEPER 4/ TREASURE 5/ FALLING DOWN 6/ APRIL 7/ GUILT 8/ IF YOU WANT ME 9/ SOMETHING MORE 10/ NEED (SOMEBODY) 11/ INSIDE OF ME 12/ SIXTEEN YEARS 13/ SATIN SAFE 14/ RAIN 15/ FEEL THE SAME 16/ COME HEAVEN 17/ IN MY ARMS 18/ DIE DIE DIE.

Costa, Matt
Songs We Sing
PS, US Reissue of last year's Venerable Media release w/4 NEW SONGS. A stylistic stew that jumps off from mid-60's Brit folk to encompass psych, blues, ragtime, country, pop & classical. Produced by Tom Dumont (NO DOUBT) & Phil Ed (MODEST MOUSE, SHINS).
Brushfire-6264
CD
$16.25

Coven
Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls
PS, US Coven's sound is inspired by the occult, as is immediately evident from their song titles and lyrics that speak of demons, witches and satanic rituals. This album, released in 1970, attracted many fans to the genre, in part because a track entitled "Black Sabbath" and the presence of a bassist named "Oz Osbourne" gave the band an air of mystery. However, this American band is of no relation to their British counterparts. Coven, nonetheless, bring us a high quality album, both from a musical and visual standpoint (thanks to the dramatic cover art).

Cowsills, The
Painting The Day: The Delicious Psychedelia of the Cowsills (DELAYED)
PS, UK The Cowsills are right up there with the Monkees as classiest of all the American teen groups, the Cowsills were an institution in the late sixties. This 23 track compilation comprises their significant hits, the best of their superb vocal psychedelia and the entire "11 x 11" acid concept album released digitally for the first time anywhere in the world. Hailing from Rhode Island, The Cowsills were the original "Family of Pop" on whom the Partridge Family were based. Their father William "Bud" Cowsill, began assembling the group at the height of Beatlemania. Eventually it comprised his sons Bill, Bob, Barry, John and Paul, seven year old daughter Susan and their mother Barbara. The Cowsills created highly polished vocal pop and In 1967, after some false starts, their breakthrough single, the very memorable "The Rain the Park & Other Things' reached number 1 on the American chart. The Cowsills enjoyed two million selling number one hits (both included on this compilation) "The Rain The Park & Other Things" (sometimes known as "I Love The Flower Girl") and their cover of the themesong from the popular musical "Hair" which became a hippy anthem and was banned in Vietnam. The band's other two immense USA top ten hits "We Can Fly" and "Indian Lake" are also both included on this compilation.

Dead Man
S-T
PS, SWEDEN Dead Man mine the birth of stoner rock, from the Grateful Dead to Iron Butterfly... So it's no suprise that fans of Black Bonzo will find much to appreciate here, just as historical but less hysterical. High Bias REVIEW: "Like so many Swedish bands, DeadMan is love with the 60s and early 70s. Interestingly, the Gothenburg quartet is less enamored of psychedelia and early metal than it is of the jamming, trippy rock & roll that would eventually become what we now call classic rock..."

Doc Pomus
Blues In The Red
PS, UK Doc Pomus was an is acclaimed as one of THE classic songwriters... sometimes alone, sometimes in the company of peers like Leiber and Stoller, and frequently with composer-partner Mort Shuman, seemingly effortlessly wrote or co-wrote 24 carat rock and pop classics bu the bushel such as "Boogie Woogie Country Girl", "Teenager In Love", "Lonely Avenue", "Can't Get Used To Losing You", "His Latest Flame", "Sweets For My Sweet", "Little Sister", "Youngblood", "Viva Las Vegas", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Suspicion", "Turn Me Loose", "A Mess Of Blues" and countless other award-winning tunes of the '50s and '60s. But this white, crippled, middle-class Jewish kid started his career, unbelievably, as a blues-shouter in 1940s New York City, following in the footsteps of his heroes Big Joe Turner and Wynonie "Mr Blues" Harris. For the first time ever on CD, we explore Pomus' secret history as a recording artist which, coincidentally, also reflects the amazing history of rhythm & blues from mid forties risque blues and jazzy jump tunes to mid fifties screaming rock 'n' roll.

Elope
3WD
PS, SWEDEN New album from Swedish throwback power-trio Elope, the first of two Elope albums to be released in 2006. "3WD" is the rockin' record of the pair and falls in line with the Cream, Badfinger, Beatles comparisons heaped upon their debut album "The No Name Record". Elope offer up another helping of late-60s, early-70s classic rock escapism, the kind that Scandinavians seem to be born into. Praise for their last album include "Mashing together such titanic influences as Neil Young, Badfinger, and (gulp) the Beatles is hardly novel, even from a Swedish stoner rock band. Still, I keep dialing up this mellow, mesmerizing album...and digging it hard every single time." (San Francisco Bay Guardian/Kurt Wolf)
The upcoming "9 Distilled Dreams" will explore Elope's dreamy side, their hazy mellowosity.

Epic 45
Drake Flow
PS, UK 8 tracks. A darker, more instrumental work. Deatils to follow. Drakelow" is the new 26-minute EP by Epic45. Written in response to a visit that two of the band undertook to an abandoned underground military complex, the sound captures perfectly the spirit and atmosphere of the surroundings that inspired it. "Drakelow" evokes a dark, brooding menace as deep drones and cavernous reverberations engulf the listener. The music is by turns dense and claustrophobic, nostalgic and full of longing. Best played at night, in the dark, on headphones, the EP is profoundly and deeply affecting. If you're after musical comparisons, there are certain similarities with the 'isolationist' school of ambient or the alien soundscapes of Biosphere and Fennesz. This is not purely mood music however, as tracks like "English Clock Systems" and "They Cut into the Hill" ably demonstrate, Epic45 can weave sublime melodies. What is clear is that Epic45 have excelled themselves and pushed their music into new and unexpected territories. These days, too few bands are prepared to take risks. Epic45 are clearly one of those that do, and when such experiments yield results like "Drakelow", we should be all the more thankful for it.

Evie Sands
Estates Of Mind
PS, UK Evie Sands....one of the most astonishing female vocalists in the world, the favourite singer of Dusty Springfield among many others....yes, we've been through all this before, but....well...it needs to be said!.... After a series of critically acclaimed disappointments in the 1960s, Evie at last got her due with the sublime (and monster hit!) 1969 single and album "Any Way That You Want Me" on A&M (also on RevOla!).....a couple of years later, Evie was to team with Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, erstwhile hitmakers at Dunhill Records....masterminds of the label's dazzling second run, going from re-inventing The Grass Roots as pop/soul hitmakers, to the personal triumph of relaunching the hit career of The Four Tops....On a roll, they were able to launch Haven Records, to which their first signing was Evie....for this superb album, written and produced by the duo, which was a huge success, both artistic and commercial for Evie, and spawned the hit singles "You Brought The Woman Out Of Me" and "I Love Makin' Love To You".....along with a raft of cover versions by Barbra Streisand, Gladys Knight, Dusty Springfield, Dobie Gray ("You Can Do It" Billboard Top 20, R&B Chart), Dionne Warwick, Frankie Valli, Cher and Greg Allman, The Manhattans, Phyllis Hyman, Jose Feliciano, Linda Clifford, June Pointer, Weather Girls, Liona Boyd, The Ebonys, Karen Carpenter, Tom Jones, Betty Everett, and many others.....a songwriting coup for Dennis and Brian, and for Evie herself.... So here we are, with the original album, as well as no less than 5 unreleased bonus tracks of stunning quality....another triumph for Evie....and for Lambert & Potter....and for RevOla!

Gysin, Brion
One NIght @ the 1001
PS, US REISSUE of this long unavailable 1998 album, with new cover artwork. As surrealist painter, poet, novelist, audio experimenter, inventor of the Dream Machine, & favorite collaborator of William S. Burroughs, he influenced the most creative minds of the '60s & '70s. In '54, he launched his 1001 Nights club in Tangier. The first CD of this document is what the lucky Western & Moroccan customers of the interzone could hear at the time: a varied selection of pure traditional & trance music. This is a unique document recorded by the inventor of the cut-up method himself & includes Paul Bowles' exclusive introduction. The 2nd vol is based on a spoken word tape called Dilaloo that is a precise description of an initiation ceremony in the village of Jajouka. Between the music of trance & the raw cry of being, we see the process of transformation at work.

Hell On Wheels
There Is A Generation of Handicapped People To Carry On
PS, SWEDEN Hell on Wheels is one of Swedens´ best kept musical secrets! The band was formed back in 1994 and they have toured across Europé and US. The Band has a lot of influences and it's the American indie scene together with the English equivalent from the late 80s and 90s that really stands out, along with the daily life for a salesclerk at the national railroad, a producer at the Swedish national radio and a guide at the medieval museum of Stockholm. This is the band's brilliant debut album released in 2001.

Hell On Wheels
The Odd Church
PS, SWEDEN New album from Jim's new favorite Swedish band and what will certainly be one of the best Scandinavian albums of 2006, easy. Hell On Wheels incorporate a howling guitar/vocal catharsis and surreal lyrical twists that we haven't heard since a span of time encompassed by The Pixies' "Surfer Rosa" and "Trompe Le Monde". Imagine if The Pixies and had never broken up and truly loved each other... But really, with the amount of high-definition rock IQ being displayed here that's simplifying things too much. They're awesome. And be sure to check out the link below. It's for Kristen's Postcards, an Italian net label who has release a free download EP for Hell On Wheels late last year entitled "New Chemicals". Download 4 free/legal tracks including "Heard You On The Radio" (an amazing song which appears in mixed/mastered form on The Odd Church), plus "The Soda" and their singularly expressive Pixies and Supertramp covers. http://www.kirstenspostcard.com/releases.htm Highly recommended! Hello Saferide
Introducing: Hello Saferide
PS, SWEDEN Debut album "Introducing: Hello Saferide" has given Annika Norlin, aka Hello Saferide, great reviews and a great audience. Folk pop with acoustic/electric guitars, songs sweetly adorned, and led by one of the most interesting no-frills voices in pop! Darkly humrous lyrics and funny/touching lyrics make this an incredible listen. Noisedfisk Review: "I hope you won't be fooled by what you can read about the music in various reviews: it's far from "bubblegum pop" or from "tweepop", in my humble opinion... even though you can sometimes hear some handclaps, some shalalas, some jangling guitars, some trumpets... But there's something else in her music, something which makes it much more original, touching and interesting than simple tweepop: it may be the slow and sad songs whispered with a soft voice, it may be the catchy and folkish voice and melodies, it may be the lyrics which are great short stories precisely describing, in a few words, complicated feelings and trivial moments with the same elegance. It may be her charm."

Kettel
Through Friendly Waters
PS, UK After the mesmerizing, acoustic Volleyed Iron on U-Cover last year, Kettel returns to electronics, this time with an organic theme. Some of this music is reminiscent of Plaid's Not For Threes, but it's even more beautifully melodic. From the bleeps, piccolo, and piano on the delicate masterpiece "Pinch of Peer" to the subdued cello on the title track, this is a fine, sumptuous album. Other highlights are the squelchy "Shinusob," and the lo-fi "Purple Jacket Trot." The CD ends with two cuts from a live performance: "Whom" and "Mwoeb" are both drawn-out and almost ambient. This is the first release on new Dutch label Sending Orbs. Kettel, interviewed here in 2003, is still one of my musicians to watch. His music shows continued growth and maturity, with plenty of pleasant surprises.

Kid, The
La Societe Nouvelle
PS, SWEDEN Ethereal electronica and synth-driven dance-pop gothicness, likened to The Knife with The Kids' retro vibes rendered as a blend of Joy Division, The Cure and Siouxsie, but with a decidedly modernist flair. Quite interesting songs and weirdly compelling vocals. Their single, "Kit Klub Hotel" is incredible. Blown By The Wind blog REVIEW: "The Kid is a four piece from Sweden who make what one would possibly call "Gothic Dance." They mix dark instrumentation and breathy female vocals to make a sort of chamber-rock meets post-punk meets dance sound that is both haunting and irresistable. If I were to throw a few artists into a pot, I'd say they sound like a mix of Joy Division, The Cure and The Knife."

Kudu
Death of the Party
PS, US They tap into Siouxsie circa 82, dark Chicago House circa 86, deep 70s Funk, & consciously or not, UK Jungle Techno circa 91. They're a real deal & the music is so primal that they could just as validly be classed a rock act as a jazz or dance act. On stage they're dark & raw & desperate, but their pop potential has always been apparent to anyone with ears for song craft & eyes for charisma.

Languis
Other Desert Cities
PS, US Reference points: New Order, Stone Roses Spacemen 3, Kraftwerk, Doves, Sigur Ros, Primal Scream. The L.A. based quartet of Languis includes Argentina-born Marcos Chloca and Alejandro Cohen, Stephen Swesey (ex Tristeza) and John Girgus of Aberdeen (Sarah Records). Other Desert Cities was produced by Ian Catt (Saint Etienne, Trembling Blue Stars, Heavenly, Field Mice). Languis has played with My Morning Jacket, Broadcast, Matmos, Mouse on Mars, Hood, Arab Strap, Damon & Naomi, and Dntel. Languis is touring the US multiple times in 2006. In L.A. they have performed at Museum of Contemporary Art and The Natural History Museum. Their music can be heard on PBS and KCRW. Press: "a shimmering collection of layered shoegazing pop that will melt your heart and immediately elbow their way onto your list of 'completist' bands you know, the ones where you have to have everything they release. Opener 'In the Fields of (Lonely Fences)' is a dark, pounding dancefloor stomper in the style of New Order and Clan of Xymox. 'Falling From So High' is an ethereal, chillout floater that's perfect for crashlanding into a big fluffy cloud after a night of heavy partying and compares favorably with the calmer moments in Spacemen 3 and Primal Scream's early discographies ('Perfect Prescription' and 'Screamadelica' respectively). 'Times Are Changing' features glistening guitars and a swirly haze of atmospherics for a psychedelically-tinged shoegazing pop tune that recalls Ride and Chapterhouse at their peak. 'I Forgot I Forgot' is a lightweight, warm and fuzzy pop charmer with lovely harmonic vocals and closer 'City of Lights' rides a catchy little bassline for a tender, morning-after ballad that's sweetly whispered into the ear of a loved one until its cooing choral coda drifts off into the afterglow of tender moments with that very special someone. 'Other Desert Cities' is a very special listening experience and one of the year's finest releases"- Jeff Penczak, Foxy Digitalis

Features female vocals of ex-Swans chanteuse Jarboe & beloved cello player & long time collaborator Julia Kent (ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS). Machine Drum & Various Artists
Mergerz & Acquisitionz (2XCD)

Reinhardt, Django
The Great Artistry of: Django Reinhardt / Django's Guitar
PS, UK "He did more for the guitar than any other man in jazz. His way of playing was unlike anyone else's and jazz is different because of him. There can be many other fine guitarists but never can there be another Reinhardt." Stephane Grappelli For many, simply the greatest guitarist who ever lived and an avowed influence on everybody from Eric Clapton, to George Benson to Julian Bream. "The Great Artistry Of Django Reinhardt" is a significant, album as it is electric and modern and his last... recorded merely two months before his sudden death in May 1953. The March 10th session that comprised the 'Great Artistry of Django Reinhardt' album produced eight superb performances including a rendition of 'Nuages' that many consider to be his best. The whole atmosphere of this session is somehow permeated with a great melancholy. Evident on all the tracks is a strange mixture of sadness, beauty and depth. 'Manoir de Mes Reves' has an air of quiet acceptance. It is very peaceful, but at the same time there is an almost unbearably desolate quality to it. Almost as if he knew the end was coming. The album has an extraordinary melancholy atmosphere. An emotional intensity that somehow suggests he knew the end was near. It is considered by Djangophiles to be his most beautiful work. There are Django Reinhardt societies all around the world, every market, his music transcends language barriers.

Shankar, Ravi
Transmigration Macabre
PS, UK "Ravi Shankar is the godfather of world music" - George Harrison. Ravi Shankar is frequently credited with introducing the sounds of the Indian sitar, tabla and oud to western ears. One of the most respected contemporary musicians of any country, Shankar is as revered by Indian traditionalists as he is by the rock musicians and fans who have incorporated the unique character of the sitar into their working vocabulary of sounds. Transmigration Macabre continues in the tradition of this exciting blend of both worlds. Shankar composed "Transmigration Macabre" for the British art film "Viola" which tells of the growth and eventual victory of a possessed man¹s belief that his dead wife has returned to life in the form of a cat that pursues him. The music traces his emotional turmoil as the man, dominated by his wife during her lifetime, struggles against her baneful influence after her death. One of the first adapters of his music was George Harrison, who made a pilgrimage to Shankar in India. The influence of the master is apparent in "Norwegian Wood" and obviously "Sgt Pepper's" "Within You Without You". Ravi performed to wildly enthusiastic audiences at both the Monterey International Pop festival of 1967 and at the Woodstock Festival and Peter Sellers sought his advice regarding the sitar during filming of the Blake Edwards comedy "The Party" Dozens of the best psychedeic bands incorportated sitar into their sound because of Shankar's direct influence; The Rolling Stones, the pretty things, the electric prunes, strawberry alarm clock etc "Transmigration Macabre" is Ravi Shankar's most psychedelic album, the dreamlike quality of the album is extraordinary. The beauty and sensitivity of the playing out of this world.

Sun Ra Arkestra
Concert for Comet Kohoutek
PS, US Reissue. Recorded at Town Hall NYC in December 1973, this concert was one of the most outrageous of Sun Ra's cosmic jazz session. This eclectic ESPDisk' sponsored celebration of the Comet Kohoutek featured a fire eater, talking drums, and dancers in platform shoes, in addition to Sun Ra's Arkestra. After taking the stage 90 minutes late, the band expertly navigates its way through cosmic free playing, big-band romps, and didactic vocal numbers. Sun Ra plays synthesizer throughout while the group chants in astral worship. What results is one of his most bizarre recordings - 9 pieces were dedicated to the passing of the Comet Kohoutek - which sounds as though Ra & Co. were signaling the comet to take them back to their alternate universe. No less, the concert takes the listener into the divine astral trajectory- far-out of the realms of jazz, psychedelia, cosmic electronics & astral funk. "We open up the doors of the outer space employment agency" heralds the mood of this LP. Final cut is quintessential Sun Ra myth theme "Space Is the Place". Of great cultural & historical significance - one of the most wild & unhinged events in avant-garde music. Original art. Digitally remastered w/new liners by ESP found Bernard Stollman.

PS, US Recorded by John Levy in 1971 & released by Lyrichord in the mid-'70s,this comprises the 2nd part of Levy's whole enterprise: to capture not only the sacred music of the Tibetan ritual in Bhutan, but all aspects of the native folk music as well. This completely remastered folk & instrumental release follows the Tibetan Buddhist Rites from the Monasteries of Bhutan album of ritual & chanting, & features performances on both Tibetan & Bhutanese lutes & fiddles, beautiful folk songs, & a part of a drama of Tibetan origin performed by a troupe of yak & cow herdsmen of eastern Bhutan. Bombardment of Saturn
PS, US Dubstep dons Jamie and Roly follow one of last year's most astonishing electronic albums, Degenerate, with another landmark release. Side-A's "Bombardment of Saturn" fires off a descending horn riff and the deadliest of basslines while Side- B's "Killing Floor" hurts with ruff distorted bass riffs and stabs.

Volumen
Science Faction
PS, US That an independent new-wave band -Volumen- comes from Montana in 2006 runs against the prevailing wisdom that this kind of music only reaches the public via New York art schools & European nihilists. This features 15 new tracks, including paranoiac hits such as "Side of a Box," "Orson Welles Was Right," and "Descolada." Their music is a hybrid of the sounds popularized by XTC & 6 Finger Satellite.

Works, The
S-T
PS, SWEDEN Better price direct from Sweden and on sale until April 4th. Truly brilliant Swedish throwback psychedelia. The Works feature members of Dungen's band and by the sound of it that makes complete sense! From spine-tingling fuzzed-out epic ballads to thundering, cataclysmic psychpopsongs this album takes you back to the late 60s and early 70s (especially British psych from that era) in the same way that Elope, Hip Whips, and Motorpsycho can. Vice Magazine REVIEW: ""The shroom season is here, and the Works debut album is one aural stimuli that will groove with the fungi big time! The Works come over like goggle-eyed virtuosos from some weird Scandinavian conservatoire where ergot is on the curriculum. Musically, what comes across is a love for the angst and uplift of The Who, early Floyd and The Small Faces."

303s, The
Lines Of Parallel Minds (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US Electronics, rock, ephemera, and mood make New Jersey's The 303s an ingenious meld of power and fragility. Ingrid Dahl and Parixit Davé learned most of their musical savvy together, unknowingly creating their own reverb-eclectic pop sound that resonates with intense attention to detail. The 303s music overflows with loud yet sweet aural dialogues that showcase Ingrid and Parixit's shared attractions to anxiety, love, experimentation, and letdown amidst all of their jarring guitars, complex rhythms, shoegazy fuzz, and synthesizer harmonics. Lines of Parallel Minds, the beautifully produced (by Stephen Hindman of Lismore) debut album, creates something new: a fluid balance between lo-fi and majestic, between careful and random, between indifference and sincerity... The best of parallel like-minded minds.

AFX (Aphex Twin)
Chosen Lords (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 18TH)
PS, Us Rather than release a 3 CD feat. all 41 Analord tracks, AFX himself has distilled the tunes into a cohesive album, as it was intended to be heard. It is, in fact, the first full album of new material & the word is that the tracks are among his very best. Largely recorded on his private collection of analog synthesizers - vintage, modern & home-made, the rhythms, melodies, harmonies, & even some subliminal lyrics have all evolved directly from the machines. Partly-inspired by NY electro, Chicago house & Detroit techno classics, but the album also stimulates the kind of "lucid dreaming" atmospherics found on "Selected Ambient Works 85-92"

They meld it all to make their own, unmistakable noise on this, their fourth album. "Aloha makes warm, progressive rock with a dreamy, resonant aftertaste. Antena
Toujours Du Soleil (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, UK A brand new album from Antena - stylish French electro-bossa pioneers whose debut Camino Del Sol is now an acknowledged genre classic. Antena's groundbreaking mix of Kraftwerk, Suicide and the breezy tropicalia of the Gilberto family (Joao, Astrud and Bebel) sounds as fresh in 2006 as in 1982, when John Foxx produced their debut single, The Boy From Ipanema, and future Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant tagged them 'electro-samba'. The label still applies, and echoes of the Antena sound can be heard in artists as diverse as Stereolab, Electralane and Thievery Corporation indeed the latter duo co-wrote two of the thirteen songs on Toujours du Soleil. The remixed Antena trio for 2006 consists of main songwriter Isabelle Antena together with daughter Penelope Fasy (replacing her father Sylvain) and hip Brussels dj Axailes Solar. Conceived as a sequel to Camino Del Sol, Toujours du Soleil (Always the Sun) was recorded on the French Riviera and produced by Dr Drak, Shape and The Cool Groove Sessions. Featuring a stellar cast of prestigious international guests, the 2006 Antena trip takes you from Paris to Tokyo, Goa to Washington CD. Stand-out tracks include energetic stepper Le Spinner (already familiar from the Samsonite ad campaign), future lounge classic Toujours du Soleil and the electro-groovy Love is to Blame, as well as a magical version of the laid-back America classic Horse With No Name. "Essential 2005's most charming musical surprise" (Mojo, December 2005).

Appleseed Cast
Peregrine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US The 6th studio album from this Lawrence, Kansas band is a force to be reckoned with. An album equally well-suited to both driving long distances watching scenery fly by and lying around with a pair of good-quality headphones, it's a dense and multi-textural forest of sound, full of delicate nuances and nearly fathomless in its depth. Shifting constellations of guitar and warm-sounding vocals are driven forward by consistently compelling percussion, coming together to form something very powerful.

Battiato, Franco
Pollution (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Franco Battiato's wonderfully lively 1973 concept album Pollution is an audaciously psychedelic album drawn from the space rock dimension with good portions of electronics and keyboard layers. Drawing heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer, Battiato and company (besides himself, three backing band members play synth as well) give Pollution an extreme electronic edge. With comparisons to Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, and Pink Floyd, Pollution was declared "genius" by Frank Zappa. Extremely influential on the '90s Chicago post-rock mafia. Original artwork. New detailed liner notes.

Battisti, Lucio
Amore E Non Amore (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US Considered one of the greatest Italian songwriters for his ability to reach the primal core of emotional matters, Battisti is held in the same regard in Italy as John Lennon is in the English-speaking world. Aided instrumentally by members of PFM (progressive Italian rockers named oddly enough for a bakery) and guitarist Alberto Radius of Formula Tre, Lucio Battisti made this much adored 1971 cult masterpiece. Imagine Brazilian psych-pop combo Os Mutantes fronted by Southern soul legend James Carr and you'll get a glimpse of this inexplicably accomplished and adventurous album.

Bitcrush
In Distance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 15TH)
PS, US "In Distance," Bitcrush's latest offering and first on n5MD, finds Ex-Gridlock beat-smith Mike Cadoo pushing n5MD further into a world where two disparate yet emotional elements, human and electronic, are merged into one. Recorded over a one year span, In Distance is "very personal," by the artist's admission. Cadoo has laid himself bare in an introspective ride where shimmering shoe-gaze-centric guitars, broken electronics, dual bass work, live drums, and Mike's now trademark "the one left behind" vocal style meld together into long aural road-trips ending at dusk in the middle of nowhere. A trip you will be more than happy to take considering who is driving. Vast and heartfelt; engaging yet adrift, In Distance has as much in common with his debut "Enarc" (Component) and the "Shimmer & Fade" EP (Enpeg) as it does with the more recent output of Mogwai, Album Leaf or even Fourtet. In Distance leads us there, now how do we get home...for fans of: mogwai, fourtet, ulrich schauss, dryft.

PS, US "The best band currently making the rounds in NYC."-L Magazine. Three fourths of RYE COALITION join with one badass drummer to create an album of sounds that are new, exciting, primal & complex made by revamping the rhythm & blues roots of rock. Shards of Yardbirds, Cream, Pretty Things, Who & Barrett-era Floyd fly around w/a vicious kinetic energy, melded by the spirit of Stax. The title to their song Crimson Reflections Through Looking Glass Mind just about says it all. "Stuffs rock, soul & blues in a pressure cooker & roasts them on high."-CMJ. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Boris
Pink (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, US ***8.7 ON PITCHFORK!*** These new recordings effectively combine all the strongest elements of what they are capable of into one solid, complete, concise album. It's mega-drone, balls- out punk rock, extreme dark psychedelia & 70s' fuzzed out acid rock. The clincher is an infusion of ultra-catchy melodicism into their already heavy foundation. There's infectious vocal melodies that combined with intelligent song-writing create a solidified, undeniable union. It comes with a die-cut cover that when opened reveals 3 perforated acid-tab cards.

Brosseau, Tom
Empty Houses are Lonely (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 4TH)
PS, US Songs of lost love & poetic observation that shimmer like aural tintypes. Collection of highlights from his recorded history to date, augmented by several new recordings. Brosseau's voice sounds eerily like a high-lonesome reincarnation of Jeff Buckley. High, limber & sometimes vibrato-tinged, it seems to hover between the masculine & feminine. Hauntingly moody & atmospheric, & avoids the typical garden-variety verse-chorus-bridge song structures in his writing.

Garden Ruin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US Where the open blue skies of the landscapes they chronicled before were normally tempered by the smoky dark blues of their jazz influences, it's musically brighter, though this time the skies are tempered by a darker lyrical content. Casavola, Franco
Futurlieder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, UK 28 tracks. LTM is proud to present Futurlieder, the very first dedicated album of music by the leading Italian Futurist composer, theorist and writer Franco Casavola. Born near Bari in 1891, Franco Casavola was invited to join the Futurist movement by F.T. Marinetti in 1922. Casavola wrote a number of scores for theatre productions, including the mechanical ballets Anihccam del 3000 and Fantasia Meccanica. He also wrote a number of essays and manifestoes on future music, and Futurist novel, Introduction to Madness. Casavola broke with Futurism in 1927, and afterwards scored movies. He died in Bari in 1955. Although Franco Casavola claimed to have destroyed all his Futurist scores in 1927, recent research has proved otherwise. Futurlieder gathers together short Futurist pieces such as Dance of the Monkeys (Hop Frog), Zoological Foxtrot, Epileptic Cabaret and Campari (one of the first published advertising jingles). In addition the 66 minute CD includes longer song cycles such as Tankas, Liriche, La sera and Gioielleria notturna, all of which are later works (though still avowedly Modernist), and include settings of lyrics by the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. All 28 tracks on Futurlieder are previously unreleased and were recorded by virtuoso Italian duo Daniele Lombardi (piano) and Susanna Rigacci (soprano) between 1994 and 2004. The tracks were produced by Carlo Piccardi for Radio Svizzera/Rete-Due, with whom this CD is a co-production. The cover art is based on a 1932 design by Fortunato Depero.

Cash, Johnny
Open Road (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US The recordings that Johnny Cash made at the beginning of his long and fortunate career all took place in SUN studios, under the watchful eye of producer Sam Phillips, well known for also having discovered Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Phillips was struck by "Hey Porter," a song Cash had written just after he returned from the military. When asked to write a ballad for the B side, Cash wrote "Cry, Cry, Cry," that very same night. The single sold 100,000 copies in the USA alone. His second single, "Folsom Prison Blues," was just as successful. In '56 "I Walk The Line" remained on the charts for 44 weeks and sold a million copies. From this point forward there was no place to go but up for the young Johnny Cash. The precious recordings collected in this Universe CD bring together those very recordings that made him famous, along with some outtakes and rarities. A long-playing, 32-track CD to commemorate this musical giant.

Circle
Arkades(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, UK Arkades catches a session Finnish group, Circle, recorded exclusively for WFMU during their US tour, on 19/9/05. Comprising two lengthy pieces taking up a side each, 'The Greatest Kingdom' and 'The Ghost of the Highway', it focuses on their often spacey improv. underpinning and applies new meaning to a vision which strides powerfully over the line dividing apocalyptic dread from a semblance of hope. Agonised wailing, screams and torrents of molten sound dance ghostly shapes over psychedelic keyboard patterns, distant clattering, moonlit guitars and a rhythm section so carefully tempered that it's impossible not to feel the chemistry at work. Coupled to a fantastic sleeve which illustrates a homage to spaghetti western films and includes fitting notes by WFMU's Program Director, Brian Turner, Arkades proves what these New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metallers are capable of when they leave most of the rock at the door. File somewhere near Acid Mothers Temple after having been given the kinda makeover only the Scandinavians have the formula for.

PS, US Four bright-eyed college kids, keen on creating a decidedly American brand of melancholic, but hooky, indie rock - have a bone to pick with those hipster highbrows focusing their attention across the pond. Slices through Brit-influenced post-punk with mid-90's, layered guitar rock & the organic, indie aesthetic. Continually honed their sound while playing sold-out shows with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, We Are Scientists, Thunderbirds Are Now! & I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, wowing audiences with their cathartic, near-feral live show.

Connors, Loren
Moon Gone Down (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US Not since the Spring of 1995 when the one-sided "Adonis" 7"(Father Yod/Black Label) was released has New York City guitarist LOREN CONNORS (aka LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS) so laid total harrowing devastation and emotion to vinyl. Descriptions, images and ideas do not qualify the two part "Moon Gone Down." Combining the near minimalist path of this years "Departing of a Dream Vol. II" and the clean guitar blues of his 1990 "CD Rooms" (S. Joan), Loren paints a vast portrait of the still night riding to its end. Not standing alone here, in between Loren's lone, distantly spaced guitar notes falls clinking metal, bass guitar and the distant moan of hounds.

Coral Sea, The
Volcano And Heart (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
PS, US Remastered! Soaring debut album from Santa Barbara atmospheric pop outfit. "The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea's debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo's melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead's impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. Imagine a stratospherically skillful space-pop quartet with an entire string section behind it, and you'll be on their wavelength, but for me it all comes down to the voice. Frontman/founder Rey Villalobos' vocals steal the show: a luminous, sometimes androgynous croon, a silvery warble, without a glimmer of pretension...and here my closest comparison of the moment is Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue (but Rey's voice is leagues richer and less dependent on effects) and Parasol's very own Kevin Tihista (with a bunch more Thom Yorke than KT's ever going to show us), especially in the lyrics and phrasing departments.

Court & Spark
Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US With Hearts, The Court & Spark have created their meisterwerk, a rarified record that seamlessly stitches together their shimmering river hymns, fuzzy sci-fi sky songs, acoustic drone in the key of OM, dusky West Coast C&W (that's country and western), spectral discreet music, and serpentine motel blues into an album as rich, nuanced, and irreverent as it is ambitious. Hearts is about love, sanity, spirituality, and death on the borderlands of the 21st century, and it's the

Crystal Skulls
Outgoing Behavior (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US Instead of angular post-Fall inspired riffage or the art-damaged tones of their angsty Seattle neighbors, these boys have studied their AM radio classics, finding as much in common with Donald Fagan as contemporary homeboys The Sea And Cake. With a bite of George Harrison's guitar and a nip at Stereolab's rhythms, last year's debut "Blocked Numbers" was a true pop pleasure. This, their follow-up, channels a cocky hint of "Meat Is Murder"-era Smiths and sits on a treasure chest of songs that Todd Rundgren would gladly drop trou for. Vocalist Wargo's nu-lounge swagger carries his well-honed band through eleven tracks of smoky AM glory. "Clean, tight, and tuneful" - The Washington Post.

Darling Downs
How Can I Forget This Heart Of Mine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US The Darling Downs stand out as the most unlikely of collaborations between longtime members of the fertile Australian rock scene. While it is not at alll insane to imagine the driving force behind Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, & The Surrealists, Kim Salmon, working with Died Pretty's energetic frontman and songwriter Ron Peno, the improbable happens when you consider the result that might flow from such a teaming. What are the odds that these two towering figures of Australian music, famous for swaggering, noisy, swampy punk rock (Salmon) and soaring pop rock(Peno) would concoct such a perfect loveletter to American country folk? 1000-1? Armed only with Kim Salmon's custom Cole Clark acoustic guitar and Peno's singular voice and vision, The Darling Downs crafted an almost impossible album: a record of nuanced beauty, a subtle masterpiece that unfolds like a dahlia with each successive spin, giving the listener something new and unexpected at every helping. All from two guys and one pristine guitar. At times Peno channels the spirit of Appalachian folk's high lonesome sound, complete with yips, yelps and howls, while elsewhere his (improvised?!) vocals are hypnotically understated, almost delicate--threatening to disappear into thin air before crashing down like thunder. Supporting Peno's acrobatic vocal brilliance is Salmon's equally understated, elegant guitar playing, perhaps the most restrained of his career, made all the more stunning when you know the fireworks and growl of which he is capable and for which he is famous. Salmon showcases not only his versatility but playing of such surprisingly refined grace that it defines the album as one of the best listens of 2006. "With Salmon often infusing the guitar lines with deft lilts and melodies, grasping each song is sometimes as difficult as interpreting a smoke signal in a storm, the ever-shifting qualities of the music making it difficult to categorize. The experience mesmerizes."-The Age

Deupree, Taylor
Northern (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US The inspiration behind Northern (including its music, title and photography) comes from Deupree's recent relocation from the heart of urban activity in Brooklyn to the tranquility of the forest in upstate New York. Inspired by nature and the winter during which it was created, Northern, like much of his recent work, explores Deupree's interest in stillness and a slowed sense of time. Through quiet textures, subtle movements, faint loops and echoes, it was his goal to create the type of music that comes naturally to him while also highlighting the input from his dramatic new surroundings. In contrast to the brazen repetition found on Stil., Northern more ephemeral approach to Deupree's theme comes from looking at the stillness found outside of his studio windows: large, looming boulders, the softness of snow, and the hushed whisper of wind and fallen leaves; it is a world of countless tiny movements so active that an implied stillness results from the din it creates. Deupree's earthbound ideas in the album are rooted in his choice of sounds and studio practices. His now-signature Kyma manipulations are still prominent, but they have been applied to improvised electric piano, melodica, guitar, and field recordings using techniques picked up from his experimental/pop collaboration with Eisi (Every Still Day, Noble Records, Japan, 2005). A careful balance is kept through the layering of synthetic source tones of basic waveforms and long, drawn-out, fragile swells. Northern is melodic, warm and introspective, forming a bed of sound that is simultaneously quiet and noisy, structured and unsettled, looping and chaotic. Deupree has dedicated Northern to his closest friend of his teenage years, Bryan Charles Striniste, with whom he first started experimenting in electronic music over 20 years ago. Deupree's relocation to a nearby area much like the one where he grew up spurred memories of those days of early musical playfulness. Thus, Northern became highly personal and nostalgic while at the same time breaking into new territory for Deupree, echoing the changes in his personal life.Northern is the first solo CD from Taylor Deupree since 2004's January (Spekk, Japan), and the first on 12k since the seminal Stil. (12k, 2002).

Fiery Furnaces
Bitter Tea (Digipack Packaging) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 18TH)
PS, US "Bitter Tea (to be released on their new label Fat Possum Records) was recorded at the same time as Rehearsing My Choir, the album made with their 82 year old grandmother on vocal duties, and one which tracked the story of her life in a series of inventive vignettes. Bitter Tea, however, has an even wider appeal. Or, as Matt has put it: "Bitter Tea is a very girly record. The granddaughter record, as opposed to the grandmother record." The Friedbergers describe this album as "Sissy Psychedelic Satanism." Their reference points range from Devo to tack-piano and an imagined granddaughter1s pre-adolescently playful take on Black Sabbath - replete with backwards vocals. It's also a return to a fuller, more band-oriented sound. Matt Friedberger says he believes his little sister to be "The finest lady vocalist in Rock-n-Roll for the past twenty-five years". She may well be. Bitter Tea was recorded in Benton Harbour Michigan in 2005 and was written & produced by Matt Friedberger. Matthew played all instrumentation apart from drums. Eleanor sang and played some drums. Additional drum work comes courtesy of Andy Knowles." - Filter

Final Fantasy
He Poos Clouds (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US On his second album, Owen Pallet presents a clearly enhanced concept of his solo project Final Fantasy. The core sound of his 2005 debut, "Final Fantasy Has A Good Home," was mainly based on Pallet's violin and his expert handling of the loop pedal. He now proves his skills as an arranger, working with an abundantly staffed chamber music ensemble, featuring a string quartet, piano, harpsichord and percussion. Still, Owen's ingenuity for catchy melody lines and surprising idioms is captivating.!Regardless of the more extended scope for this album, it was produced to maintain a certain intimacy. The overall atmosphere carries the ease of an afternoon dress rehearsal, as if the ensemble members played for themselves one last time before the crowd rushs in. Owen"s mostly introverted vocals also express this mood of privacy. The musical language is eclectic without letting its influences act as bare quotations for themselves. Traces were smeared with care and everything is consolidated and processed in such a distinct way that one cannot clearly designate the culprits any longer. He even integrates an amazing variety of stylistic spheres within the individual songs. String arrangers for ARCADE FIRE. Fans of Andrew Bird tingle w/delight. Full US tour coming in Fall.

PS, US Over the course of just a few years, Foster has captivated audiences and critics alike through a magnetic patchwork of recordings ranging from broken spirited balladry ("Born Heller") to fiery psych rock gestalt ("All The Leaves Are Gone") to the voice of an outsider folk siren ("Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You"). The one constant is the utterly overwhelming strength and seductive unease of her voice and the bravery of an iconoclastic spirit. A deeply absorbing, magical reconstruction of 19th century German art songs that float in a wash of blissed voice and electric guitar in an almost dreamlike fashion through a salon of her own invention. She makes a case for German as one of the previously unknown romance languages.

Frauds
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 18TH)
PS, US "For fans of Sloan, Velvet Crush, Zumpano, Arlo, New Pornographers, The Shins, The Figgs and Spoon. Stacks of 3 part harmonies, refreshing, slippery hooks, sugary subversive melodies all over the place, all wrapped up in a 'could-be-huge-playing-in-arenas in that alternate musical universe so many of us rhasodize over-a-few-beers.' Brimming with great, memorable song after song, blossoming into Technicolor view. These 'frauds' are the real deal and about as authentic as it gets."-Not Lame.

Frog Eyes
Golden River (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 18TH)
PS, US REISSUE. Forming out of the ashes of Victoria BC's BLUE PINE, key members have reformed taking their unique swirling, stumbling sound & dragging it into darker, dramatic territory w/this incarnation. These guys tread into the same drowning waters as Nick Cave, Crime & the City Solution, Captain Beefheart & the Rock*A*Teens. Here are oddly paced scream & echo ballads w/ a burlesque, cabaret/carnival quality. Imagine Interpol melodies eerily pumped though a speaker in the same room where Destroyer covers Danielson Famile songs. "Best new band to emerge this year...disjointed, evasive, haunting, melodramatic, dissonant, anguished, ominous & HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

Galbraith, Alastair/Matt DeGennaro
From the Dark (South Island): Long Wires in Dark Museums Vol. 2 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US These architectural idiosyncrasies are transformed into nuanced & hypnotic audio. Wires -some as long as 100 ft- are affixed throughout a building. When the wires are taut & stroked with rosined hands or a piece of leather, longitudinal vibrations are sent to the points of attachment, creating a natural resonator. It is not the wires that make the sound, but the wall, railing or window frames at their end; wire length & room acoustics determine the pitch. The result, achieved in a veil of total darkness, is a beauttiful & eerie confluence of chance & accident, architecture & improvisation.

Handsome Family
Last Days of Wonder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US A collection of country folk love songs sung in airports, garbage dumps, drive-thru windows & shark-infested waters. The album celebrates the little miraculous moments of beauty found in everyday life: a golf course shining in the rain, hanging lights bouncing in the breeze, pigeons singing from billboards, trees blooming in squares of dirt. The songs linger on those moments when we"re pulled from the ordinary to feel awed by mystery, bewildered by beauty, terrified by the vast unknowable around us (whether we wander through shady groves or crowded parking lots). Brett Sparks, who writes the music, draws from medieval melody, country-politan string arrangements, tin-pan alley crooners, & dusty hillbilly records to weave together the fabric of this record. Rennie Sparks, who writes the lyrics, makes magical realism from polar adventure stories, turn-of-the-century electricity wars, pagan hunting songs & her own time spent (like most people) riding up elevators, staring out hotel room windows, & driving interstate highways. The inspiration for the words in these songs comes from Rennie"s belief that not only does our present world feel like the last days of wonder, but that human life has always felt just this way: full of a sense of impending doom & inevitable self-destruction, but simultaneously steeped in the sacred, the infinite, the impenetrable, the ever-wondrous. Brett"s musical compositions & recording process were hybrids of the old & the new; the real & the fake; the analog & the digital. The album is full of such ancient & modern anomalies: analog compressors, vintage instruments & condenser mics, all drawn into the digital world of computer recording. Pedal steel parts were e-mailed from Chicago (Stephen Dorocke-FREAKWATER & JESSE SYKES) & musical saw part sent from London (DAVID COULTER-TEST DEPT, POGUES, TOM WAITS). "Last Days" travels from swamps & caves to laboratories & bowling alleys, always celebrating the mystery & madness in love. The songs explain who's hanging shoes on telephone wires, why automatic sinks in airports sometimes don't see your hands, & why The Handsome Family refuses to go to Heaven unless flies can come too. Also, a tender tale of Tesla's last days: his love for wounded pigeons & his ability to explode light bulbs with his mind. Rennie is eaten by a wild boar. Brett threatens to pull the stars down from the sky. A record of love songs in the true Romantic sense.

Holland, Jolie
Springtime Can Kill You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 15TH)
PS, US Springtime's 12 track song-cycle is a crossroads where haunting meets joyful - a voice from the heavens singing stories of the underworld. Holland's songs rise and fall like heavy eyelids and convey the peace of that place between asleep and awake, creating a special place for you to be. There sounds from past and present-tense waltz together to a never-ending melody that flickers between folk, jazz, blues and pop. Holland's lyrics conjure characters and situations one might find in the surrealistic celluloid of Jim Jarmusch. As with all good dreams, there is an anything-goes spirit leading the way.

I Am Robot And Proud
The Electricity In Your House Wants To Sing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 4TH)
PS, US I Am Robot And Proud is the name 26 year old Toronto native Shaw-Han Liem works under to create his singular brand of hypnotic, beguiling electronic pop music. The Aptly titled, The Electricity In Your House Wants To Sing, is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up to his very popular 2003 album Grace Days (Catmobile). The Electricity In Your House Wants To Sing is electronic pop music that energizes the listener and refreshes the ear. It's syncopated multi-instrumental rhythms and playful, repetitive multi-dimensional melodies are just the elixir your head needs. Shaw-Han mixes acoustic instrumentation; piano, flute, sax, guitar, seamlessly with his unique electronic keyboard sounds and percussive elements. This isn't difficult, experimental IDM that pulls the listener off the left side of the dial. This is complex composition that manages to simply delight. It's an exciting sound that gives one the feeling of flying fast & free through a heavenly modern green world of pop, beauty, and sunshine. our brain chemicals are sure to be balanced after the first minute into the title track. Track list: 1. The Electricity In Your House Wants To Sing, 2. When I Get My Ears, 3. The Work, 4. Save Your Neck, Save Your Brother, 5. The Scholars and the Travelers, 6. Neil Lake, 7. Me vs. Heidi, 8. Good Sleep, 9. A Man That Runs Too Fast, 10. Places We're Trying To Find, 11. Center Cities. "Liem works small miracles in the studio, arranging tiny slivers of sound into glistening electropop constructions that blend harmonic balance and stasis with restless change and constant motion. Sounding bolder, and with punchier sequencing on tracks like 'The Mood You're In' and 'Mexico City', the only thing missing is the right videogame to play along with it." -- THE WIRE. "No matter how many machines are employed here, 'Grace Days' is full of human heart. Slow and fragile, yet with a certain joyful abandon, I Am Robot And Proud emits electro-pop with playground beats and softly-stroked guitars, like Isan lacing-up a pair of suitably dapper dancing shoes." -- COMES WITH A SMILE. "A beautiful collection of intricate aural tapestries, bolstered by deep bass and pulsing rhythms. From the deliciously slow grind of Winter at Night" to the elegant glockenspiel odyssey of "Learn From Mistakes," Liem dazzles the listener as much as he soothes. The perfect soundtrack for counting stars, hot baths, or falling in love with your computer." - EXCLAIM. "Fans of Isan and Boards Of Canada should take note, this record is as deserving of your attention as much as these well known groups. The compositions are highly hypnotic, offering a sleepy, dreamlike state using minimal techniques & infectious chord structures. Robot achieve the rare task of producing catchy pop songs while remaining blissful and chilled out. Sublime in every way. One of those rare albums perfect for any mood, whether it's for serious listening or simply background music, you just can't fail with this package. There's no overly long or tedious pieces, Robot have hit on the right formula and utilise it well to their advantage. A lovely album full of many surprises, which leave you begging for more." --ANGRY APE. Cover art designed by Shaw-Han Liem, I Am Robot And Proud.

Kinn
Karlshorst (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 4TH)
PS, US KINN is a three piece band from Berlin: Guitar: Frank Schültge Blumm whose releases on labels like Staubgold, Tomlab and Audio Dregs go back to 1993, his latest album ('Zweite Meer') came out on Morr Music in 2005. Bass: Marcel Türkowsky whose solo-Performances as a tape-artist will soon find their way on a split LP with 'Zeitkratzer' Reinhold Friedl on Bremen's Happy Zloty label. Drums: Jan Thoben who released on Beau Rivage and plays in bands like Gaston and Taunus. KINN build up analogue loops and stumbling digital transformation with their instruments and electronic extensions. They create a unique musical suction; with which they achieve a wide range of dynamics and modes. Polyrhythmic structures and tonally diverse patterns flow in a sonic stream slowly morphing into rocky passages and leaving off for chamber-club-music. On "Karlshorst" KINN convincingly integrate field recordings into the rhythm and tonality of their instrumental playing. "German guitarist Frank Schültge Blumm and bassist Marcel Türkowsky's Kinn project follows the styles of such artists as John Fahey, Gastr Del Sol, Lennie Tristano and This Heat, with a hint of Steve Reich and Erik Satie's looping minimalism thrown in for good measure. Kinn is a delight that recent converts of Steffen Basho-Junghans and the rest of the recent experimental guitar solo scene will find irresistible. Boosted by Türkowsky's simple and expressive bass work, discreetly tempered with electronic effects, Blumm's technique of allowing space to become an integral part of his playing style gives the music room to breathe and seep into the atmosphere. Rather than ending up as just another Ambient exercise, however, Kinn's rich palette of different tones and worldly musical influences ensure listeners stay on their toes."

The sounds on Wind and Water are both moving and breathing, and crumbling and decomposing, often within a single track. It is at times ominous and foreboding and other times hopeful and calming. What If It Works? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 11TH)
PS, US Recording five acclaimed albums for Alias Records during the 1990s, the Loud Family, featuring Scott Miller and an ever-changing cast of musicians, made some of the best pop music of the decade. Members of the band's rabid Internet fan base traveled from all over the United States to catch their shows, flying, in some cases, several thousand miles to see them. Initially, Scott called it quits after the LF's final Alias release, 2000's "Attractive Nuisance." But he has finally been coaxed out of retirement to record "What If It Works?," which features the newest member of the Loud Family, Sacramento power pop hero Anton Barbeau is best known for his collaboration with England's Bevis Frond, "King of Missouri"). First Chapter (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 18TH)

You Are There (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 11TH)
PS, US Steeped in an ominous creation-via-diestruction atmosphere not heard since Neurosis' landmark "Enemy of the Sun" defined the sound more than a decade ago. This proves the myth that an increased focus on intricate song structures & string arrangements comes at the expense of youthful energy & inspired aggression. Their representation of tragedy comes with an inherent joy, delivered with the hope that in all dark there is equal parts light. They're not heavy like Black Sabbath, they're heavy like Beethoven. My Cat Is An Alien
Cosmic Light Of The Third Millenium (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US Like some kind of droned out Sun Ra, My Cat Is An Alien landed and stayed only long enough to drop off the masters and the artwork at Important Records before vanishing into the cosmos, or Torino, once again. This new full-length album recorded April 2005 at MCIAA's Alien Zone, located in a remote region of the Western Alps, Piemonte, Italy. The work consists of three tracks entitled "Section I-II-III" for a total lenght of 49:20 minutes. Here the Opalio space-brothers push their improvised music of the Spheres in new cosmic territories, where the use of Roberto's wordless vocals impresses a still unheard lyricism inside the sublime complexity of their unique musical textures. "Section I" opens the album with a slow and emotional epic crescendo generated by floating waves of electric space-guitars alongside glittering sounds of mini-xylophone and toy piano; this impressive astral monochord-blues increase leads to a denouement of electronics & cymbals storm. Whispered wordless moaning vocals and sparse rythmic percussions resonating in the distance open "Section II", where the celestial explosion is followed by droning walls of guitar sounds and space-toys effects, lost in a vertical streamline of astral debris. An ambient minimal guitar tune introduces the final "Section III": reiterated and limpid single guitar chords disclose the enlightened beauty of the Cosmos. In "Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium" MCIAA's mystic alien chants celebrate the beginning and the coming of a new era of the CosmicLight. My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA) is the improv duo formed by the brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio from Torino, Italy. They both primarily play electric and acoustic guitars, various toy-instruments and voice toy-microphones, percussions. Since forming in late 1997, they started up releasing several cdr and vinyl on their own Opax Records label, whose unique handmade art-packaging style represents the aesthetics of the duo, since the Opalios are involved in music as well as in painting, photography and audiovisual installations. MCIAA's debut recording immediately thrilled Sonic Youth and two months later the two brothers made their live debut as support to SY 1998 Italian tour. During the past six years MCIAA have been invited several times to perform live at Sonic Youth European tours, Kim Gordon and Jim O'Rourke's solo shows. In 2002 MCIAA took part to the Torino BIG (International Biannual Of Young Artists) curated by Christian Marclay. In 2005 MCIAA toured Europe as special line-up of Jackie-O Motherfucker with founder Tom Greenwood, and performed in Italy with Keiji Haino; MCIAA performed at the "Music Lovers' Field Companion" festival at the Sage Gateshead in Newcastle (UK), at the CCA (Center of Contemporary Arts) festival in Glasgow with Jandek and Keiji Haino, and to the "Cosmopolis" festival in Lisbon with Rafael Toral.

Plants
The Mind is a Bird in the Hand (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 4TH)
PS, US Portland, Oregon's Plants are a psychedelic folk act that blend ethereal acoustic textures with melancholy lyrical beauty; employing strings, organs, flutes and bells they create a sound that's 'quietly intense', like the sound of a storm in the distance. It's their own kind of personal folk music for their an imagined world of half conscious dreams, living forests and mystical creatures. The band is the brainchild of singer/guitarist, Josh Blanchard's and cellist/pianist Molly Griffith's musical and romantic partnership. Molly is classically trained in medieval music and harpsichord and has played in the past with Portland notables such as The Decemberists and 31 Knots. Joshua has spent ten years crafting pop songs and hallucinatory electronic pieces, from the acidic Point Line Plane (Skin Graft) to previous efforts with avant-psychde band The Mome Raths. Its their mutual love of things both very old and very new that keeps the band fresh, as Plants collect ideas from modern ambient composers, 60's acid folk voyages, and ancient musical texts. Recorded one rain and whiskey soaked Oregon springtime, the group's debut album "The Mind is a Bird in the Hand" is an achingly restrained and moody affair. From the brooding opener "Acorn Child" to the closing chords of Fantasy-folker, "Invisible Islands", the record explores themes of redemption and turning darkness into light. The record hosts a great cast of subtle guest performances by Michael Hendrickson (Jackie O Motherfucker), Brian Foote (Nudge) and Jason Buehler (Nice Nice) and is mastered by respected "folktronica" guru, Greg Davis. "Plants play a mystical brand of psychedelic folk whose solemn, droning beauty and stately pace recall Six Organs of Admittance and Pearls Before Swine at their most pastoral and intense." Dave Segal, The Stranger. "Plants alchemize hazy, stoned, sylvan folk and ambient sound into warm, shimmering, psychedelic gold." Adam Gnade, The Portland Mercury.

Ratkje, Maja
Stalker (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, UK This vinyl only picture disc release is limited to only 500 copies worldwide. Renowned international composer Maja Ratkje is a founding member in two of Norway's most respected improvisational units - Spunk & Fe-Mail. While her solo work on the Rune Grammofon release Voice is without the electronic and instrumental elements of Spunk and Fe-Mail, Stalker finds Maja merging elements of her other projects into her solo endeavors. Ranging from furious to tender, Stalker was recorded in Paris and at various live dates around Europe. This live material was then brought back to a studio in Norway and laboriously editited for release. Like much of Ratkje's work Stalker flawlessly contrasts these two disctinct emotional and audio extremes. While Stalker is influenced the the hardest Japanese noise it is also a quiet emotional drift based around Bertold Brecht's story of a girl who has drowned and is floating down a river while her body slowly dissolves leaving only her hair to remain. With this dichotomy hanging in limbo Ratkje fills in the blanks with her signature compositional attention to detail and balance.

Situation, The
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 18TH)
PS, US On their self-titled debut full-length, Philadelphia's The Situation bring together an amalgam of influences that you will be hard pressed to pinpoint. You will hear the swagger of Britpop icons like The La's and the Stone Roses mixed with the literate pop musings of American artists such as Bob Dylan and The Shins. Like the White Album or Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, the music on the album is decidedly anti-genre. Like Highway 61 Revisited or Blood on the Tracks, the lyrics on the album are well thought out, emotional ramblingsthe two of these together make this album a daydreamer's paradise. The artwork reflects album's theme, flesh vs. spirit, which is summarized by the first line from the opening track, "Amoralia." If this album were an essay on the human condition, this track would be its opening paragraph. The core of The Situation's gripping sound stems from the remarkable chemistry between songwriter Christopher Tucker and lead guitarist Joe Castro, whom Tucker dubs "Joey Marr" in reference to the Smiths legend. The group's 2003 debut, The Reece Nasty EP, drew numerous raves from esteemed publications. The Philadelphia Weekly exclaimed: "Absolute fucking pop geniusif this was NME you were reading, there'd be a little tag above this that said Single of the Week." The Big Takeover poetically observed that The Situation's "walls of ringing, arpeggiating Rickenbackers and proper pop songs sound geographically attuned to the Liverpool/Manchester soundthe sound of the Mersey as filtered through the Schuylkill." Magnet compared the group to '60s Brit gods The Kinks and The Small Faces, noting that they conjure "the same wobbly, psychedelic visions that the Brian Jonestown Massacre excels at." On their debut, they excel even further this is a capricious album that requires many listens to begin to understand. Nearly four years in the making, the album was finally completed late 2005 and mixed by Philadelphia's hardest working producer and soundsmith, Brian McTear whose credits include the likes of Mazarin, Matt Pond PA, and the Capitol Years.

Verlaine, Tom
Songs & Other Things (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US This finds his songwriting at its most colorful. According to Tom, "Lovebird asylum seeker" got its inspiration from a "picture of some friendly insects walking across a dusty desk & spelling out letters." The opening track is an instrumental, "like an introduction; what you hear at the beginning of a movie." For him, the songwriting process is natural, with ebbs & flows that he makes sure not to force. With 25 years in between this & his last vocal record, he has a lot of storytelling to catch up on, which makes every track here a true gem.
