Come Out, Come Down Fade Out, Be Gone
PS, US "'Come Out' is a marvel of ethereal precision,
immaculate pacing, Teutonic austerity, trance-inducing miasma,
and dark euphoria. 4.5/5"-PITCHFORK. 120 Days' eponymous
debut album will be released the 10th of October 2006 by
NYC`s Vice Records in collaboration with the band`s home
label, Smalltown Supersound. The album will be released in
the rest of the world early 2007. As a taster of this upcoming
masterpiece, Vice and Smalltown Supersound release this limited
edition 12" single, which is the epic 9 minutes long
opening track of the album. The 12" also features a
10 minutes long remix by Mental Overdrive. The 12" has
already got a 4.5 out of 5 at Pitchfork and the important
stereogum.com made a feature on 120 Days as band to watch.
120 Days is a Norwegian four piece band consisting of 3 synths,
a bass, one cymbal and (sometimes) a guitar, something which
places them somewhere in between electronic and rock. The
bands obsession with German kraut rock of the 70`s, experimental
artists such as Steve Reich and Arne Nordheim as well as
60`s rock group Stooges shines through in their monumental,
dark and hypnotic sound. A Smalltown/Vice co-release.

A Lily
Wake:Sleep
PS, US Tenderness and longing ring true on this roughly
hewn album of hand made valentines. Wake:Sleep, the debut
album from A Lily, is a gentle album of dulcet guitar-laced
electronics and soporific landscapes masterfully crafted
by yndi halda guitarist James Vella. Began when he was
17 years old, James has created an album that is a loving
spiral out to sleep, ending with a hypnotic 35 minute piece,
medicine for the somnambulist in all of us.

Bennett, Jay
Magnificent Defeat
PS, US New album from former Wilco madcap and math teacher... "Jay
Bennett's fourth solo effort, The Magnificent Defeat, is
as dizzying and dazzling as anything he and his former
bandmates put together, and it's nowhere near as mopey.
For one thing, Bennett's records in general -- and this
one in particular -- don't sound like his record collection.
They sound like he wrote songs, made noise -- and music
-- and had a blast doing it...The Magnificent Defeat is
one strange, quirky, and labyrinthine journey filled with
the quark weirdness of growing up ("5th Grade"),
broken love songs (the rollicking country-rock of "Wide
Open"), and the gorgeously and perversely orchestrated
tale of loss and studied rebuttal ("The Palace at
4 A.M.")... It's an album you'll be able to play in
five or ten years simply because there is so much in it.
It's rowdy, sometimes raucous, tender, good-spirited and
full of surprises. It's a rootsy yet manic pop thrill." (Thom
Jurek)

Bis
Return To Central
PS, UK Glasgow's Bis tweak their indie pop quirkiness on
their fourth album, Return to Central, and it's a desirable
and funkadelic feel-good mix of Bis' signature disco hooks
and thick pop beats. Surely their most ambitious release,
Bis shrug off their post-pubescent punk-pop snarlings and
kiddie chants found on The New Transistor Heroes and Intendo
and make Return to Central a vibrant twist in their Teen-C
Revolution. Manda Rin tames her little girl rants for something
sassy, tossing all criticism aside to transcend into electronic
bliss. She and Bis cohorts John Disco and Sci-Fi Steve
frolic with new wave synth breaks, and let their fondness
for Talk Talk, New Order, and Can be known. "What
Are You Afraid Of" and "Silver Spoon" splice
heavy techno-pop with Rin's vocalic glossy flare; however,
Sci-Fi Steven's and Disco's riveting guitars on "Chicago" shimmy
into Bis' finest moment on "A Portrait From Space," a
loopy celestial soundscape of floating orchestration kicked
off with old-school Nintendo samples, yet it's the dream
pop guitar work that sets up Bis' new rock cleverness.
Bis isn't consumed with angst for the music follower, for
they'd rather spiral into club land in their own musical
mystery. Return to Central allows Bis to relish in their
fun and self-indulgence without them being regarded as
snotty indie punks. A sophistication is cast, spawning
Bis' bold move from "Kandy Pop."

Destroyer
We'll Build Them A Golden Bridge
PS, CANADA Re-issue of DESTROYER's first album proper from
1996. Destroyer is Dan Bejar, also singer/songwriter of
the strongly regarded New Pornographers. "the one
hundredth beautiful crib death just sold to - you'll never
guess..." I guess that's how they launched ships way
way back when the first line of the first song off the
first Destroyer album got laid to tape... A cassette tape,
actually, in a borrowed 4-track. Those recordings and a
few slightly older ones would later see the light of day
on a CD that came out called We'll Build Them A Golden
Bridge. And now it's coming out again, after a few years
of OOP oblivion. The artwork's changed cause apparently
the man can afford many colors now, not just the black
ones and the white ones, though some will argue that the
changes reflect the sum of the parts of the difference
between 1996 and 2006. Argue on, we say. The album contains
two numbers that would go on to be New Pornographers songs,
as well as a song called The Pornographers. And a country
song. and another country song, and a few bars of a Bacharach/David
song, and a couple other songs somewhat under the spell
of Barrett, and then a few more on top of that. It employs
most of the bag of tricks that we have all since come to
know as Bejar's Bag - miniature violin, midi-Sax, the "ocean" function
of a Casio, broken snare, 4-string guitar, a line about
the fact that you've just quoted an Orange Juice song...
The sound of 1995 we used to call it... Too bad the record
came out in 1996... It is said that this CD almost single-handedly
buried the Destroyer franchise, and, if for that reason
alone, it demands the scrutiny of lovers and haters alike.
Enjoy the curios... TRACKLISTING: 1) Revolution 2) J. Tailor
3) Smith 4) I, As McCarthy 5) Mending Song 6) Leave Little
Fiddler (Alone) 7) The Pornographers 8) War on Jazz 9)
Islands in the Stream 10) Saddestroyer 11) Streets of Fire
12) Rose 13) Breakin' the Law 14) Whistlin' Dixie (She
Shoots) 15) Riots 16) Knowing When to Leave (Slang Mix).

Dobson, Bonnie
S/T
PS, UK Best known as the writer of the apocalyptic '60s
folk-rock standard "Morning Dew", Canadian Bonnie
Dobson became a mover on the Chicago and New York folk
revival scenes and released five albums in the acoustic
folk style between 1960 and 1964. She returned to Toronto
in 1965 and continued playing the coffee house circuit
without recording any more albums. By the time "Morning
Dew" was being widely recorded by the likes of Fred
Neil & Vince Martin (the first to cover it), Tim Rose,
The Grateful Dead, Lulu, The Jeff Beck Group and Episode
Six in the late '60s she'd upped sticks and moved to England,
home of her songwriter heroes Jackson C Frank, Ralph McTell
and Bert Jansch. Signing to RCA Records, she cut a highly
orchestrated version of "Morning Dew" at their
suggestion for her self-titled 1969 'comeback' album, along
with strong original material like "I'm Your Woman" and "I
Got Stung" and covers of hippy-era folk-rock reliables "Everybody's
Talkin'", "Let's Get Together" and "You
Never Wanted Me". Dobson's live UK debut was at the
Queen Elizabeth Hall in November 1969 and she became a
familiar presence on British and European TV and radio
for a couple of years. The 1970 follow-up album Good Morning
Rain took her MOR/orchestral folk leanings to their logical
conclusion and will appear on Rev-Ola in the near future.
First time on CD for this 1969 folk-rock jewel! Includes
the author's own version of her standard "Morning
Dew" alongside songs by Fred Neil, Jackson C Frank
and Dino Valente! Features in-depth liner notes with brand
new interview material! Remastered in the usual mind-blowing
Rev-Ola style! A must for all fans of folk-rock, singer-songwriters,
female troubadours, orchestrated torch songs and good ole
quality late '60s pop music!

Durutti Column
Rebellion
PS, UK First time in stock here. Restock. Right from the
first note it's clearly a Durutti Column album, and thank
Heaven for that. Twenty years-plus since Vini Reilly "returned" with
his debut effort and though he's looking pretty grey on
the back cover, there's no question that he's still got
both the drive and sheer sense of beauty in his guitar
playing fully in place. With Mitchell again his partner
on drums and a variety of guest singers and players helping
out along the way, most notably the lovely, powerful singer
Vick A. Wood, Reilly with Rebellion released his first
U.K. disc since Time Was Gigantic and showed that the world
was still his. Certainly, he's not breaking sudden new
ground - in respects, he's almost the postpunk Eric Clapton
at this point, quietly experimenting rather than suddenly
sign-pointing the future. But if his hushed singing and
endlessly listenable, endlessly shimmering guitar is the
keystone for all he does, Rebellion provides enough variations
to make it one of his best efforts yet. With the guest
instruments including fiddle, harmonica, and Tibetan banjo,
while bhangra samples, breakbeats, and on "Overlord,
Pt. One" a reggae-flavored rap from Bic add more modern
flavor, Reilly and company demonstrate that variety rather
than reworking one approach is the key to the Durutti Column's
relevance in a new century. One of the most inspired moments
is grounded in far earlier days, though - a version of
Irish folk standard "The Fields of Athenry," which
deserves attention as much for Wood's bravura vocal turn
as for Reilly's entrancing arrangement. Then there's "Geh
Cak Af En Yam," which sounds like an LC standard at
once gone acoustic and even more spacy and inspired than
before, the subtly enjoyable "Falling," and the
utterly captivating "Mello, Pt. One," all exquisite
testaments to the continuing power of Reilly's art. - Ned

Fourcolor
Letter of Sounds
PS, US Following the release of his work as part of the
electro-acoustic quartet Minamo on 12k (12k1031, 2005)
and the proto-pop outing under his new moniker Filfla (Plop,
2005), Fourcolor (Keiichi Sugimoto) is back with his second
release on 12k, Letter of Sounds. His previous work, Air
Curtain (12k1029) was a critical success selling out the
first pressing in little over one month. On Air Curtain,
Fourcolor explored new directions, building upon delicate,
implied rhythmic structures moving away from the strictly
drone based material on his debut cd Water Mirror (Apestaartje,
2004). With Letter of Sounds Sugimoto pushes his sound
even further by bringing the rhythms more to the foreground
and taking influences from his previous, more pop-based
work, as Filfla. The album uses many dominant rhythmic
structures such as on the opener "02" which couples
catchy guitar harmonic hooks with sliced melodic beats
or the beautiful "Rowboat" in which Sugimoto
collaborates with long-time friend Naoko Sasaki/Piana (Happy)
using a variety of instrumentation and vocals. Similarly,
a majority of the work on Letter of Sounds finds itself
working around tight, syncopated micro-rhythms. Of course
Letter of Sounds is not without its delicate undercurrents
and warm, stretched-out, whispy tones that have become
signature to Sugimoto's sound (the gorgeous finale "Frame"),
but his desire for a more up-front and structured approach
continues the evolution from a style he has mastered into
new, more challenging territory, and expands his palette
as an artist.

Bion Glent
PS, CANADA Dutch duo Don & Roel Funcken a.k.a FUNCKARMA
deploy their latest attack of warm, intricate electronics
and deeply structured beats on the latest 15 track album "Bion

the same time mechanically lush with distant synth tinkering,
choppy funk pulses and IDM treatments of surprisingly original
material. Don and Roel Funcken are probably one of the
most prolific electronic music duos in europe if not the
world. Together they have a long history in electronic
music, working together with a long string of international
artists and in various projects and musical fields, such
as Shadowhuntaz (Funckarma + Non Genetic), Quench and,
of course, the Funckarma moniker. They have remixed a slew
of artists such as Comtron, Sandor Caron, Funkstörung
and Gridlock, and released a grip of albums and singles

God Is An Astronaut
All Is Violent, All Is Bright
PS, UK God Is An Astronaut were formed in 2002 by brothers
Niels and Torsten in Wicklow, Ireland. The band released
their debut album 'The End of the Beginning' on their own
label Revive Records in March 2003. Now with the worldwide
release of the 'A Moment of Stillness' EP and their second
album 'All Is Violent All is Bright' on UK label Rocket
Girl, the band will finally see a proper release outside
of Ireland. Their music and videos have received extensive
play worldwide and at home, including major radio/TV shows
(MTV - The Comedown, MTV2 - 120 Minute Show, TV3 - Law
and Order, film ads; RTE - Fair City; Sky - ads for films
and sports events) and countless online internet radio
shows. Specifically in the UK, they have been played on
BBC 6, XFM and Resonance FM. The title track from the EP,
released as a single has already spent three weeks in the
Irish top 40. Both CDs trademark God Is An Astronaut's
extraordinary energy, emotion and tension, building from
serene ambience to searing intensity. Torsten and Niels
are joined on these recordings by drummer Lloyd Hanney
(who was trained by the late jazz legend Johnny Wadham),
making this album a much closer representation of their
live sound. They are considered by many to be the most
intense live act to emerge from Ireland in recent times. "Fragile,
love it to bits....an incredible builder....it's amazing." Eddy
Temple Morris, XFM London "Majestic." Hotpress. "Few
post-rock bands stand out from the mob but the Dublin three
piece have honed a sound that is entirely unique." Metro "GIAA

the dark hearted Wicklow-based trio should drag them out

in 1962 as it will do in 2012. A major classic. Irene was
spontaneously formed in 2004/2005 after the singer and
songwriter Tobias Isaksson, aka Bobby, had written "Stardust".
Just like his favorite bands he was fascinated by the combination
of deadly seriousness and plain joy. To record this first
song he gathered seven of his friends and recorded "Stardust".
A manifesto of Irene in 1 minute and 13 seconds with choirs,
tambourines, handclapping, percussion, brass and everything
they could find. It's the sound of sun and west coast summers.
When Irene follow up their highly appreciated debut single "Baby
I love your way" with this album they have further
sharpened their ability to explore and refine musical history,
added even more shades of summer love and added even more
members. Still, Irene neither suffers from growing pains
nor hybris. They write classic pop with a touch of 60's
girl groups, soul and Housemartins brass as if it was the
simplest thing in the world.

Kite Flying Society
Where is the Glow?
PS, US Where is the Glow? is the debut full-length album
from Kite Flying Society, a 5-piece indie-pop band from
San Diego . KFS formed in 2005 and has played shows opening
for Rogue Wave, Silversun Pickups, and Junior Boys. Their
music has been compared to pop masters contemporary (the
Shins, Rogue Wave, Magnetic Fields, New Pornographers)
and vintage (Beach Boys, Kinks). Where is the Glow? combines
KFS' summery, harmony-andkeyboard driven pop sound with
singer Dustin Illingworth's autumnal lyrics, giving the
album the bittersweet feel of a modern classic. "It's
rare that tender, gentle and sweet performances don't feel,
well, stupid. Where Is The Glow? adds to the mythology
of California -that sun-kissed land of surf cities and
little deuce coupes." -Erin Glass, San Diego CityBeat

You see, it's primal. It's hot. Like a stew-a bubbling
cauldron of secret ingredients, spiced w/ just a teensy
dash of Motörhead, maybe a quarter-teaspoon of Jesus

Michaels, Lee
Carnival of Life
PS, US Lee Michaels was one of the most soulful white vocalists
of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Between 1968 and 1972,
he released half a dozen accomplished albums on A&M
that encompassed Baroque psychedelic pop and gritty white
gospel-ish R&B with equal facility. Lee Michaels started
playing music in Southern California, where he was in a
band with future members of Moby Grape, the Turtles, and
Canned Heat, as well as in the early line-up of THE FAMILY
TREE. Michaels' own music was characterized by his soulful
vocals and equally soulful organ playing like a California
version of Steve Winwood. His first A&M album, 1968's
CARNIVAL OF LIFE is an excellent example of California
psych pop with inventive organ and harpsichord parts, Michaels'
superb vocals, and Hamilton Wesley Watt's (of EUPHORIA)
blistering guitar cutting through the mix, the terse song
titles belying the extended psychedelic pop/soul workouts
within!....a quirky start to what would be a fine and innovative
career, and a fine and timeless album in it's own right,
CARNIVAL OF LIFE is one of the treasures of 1968 LA, and
a jewel of the A&M SOUND! - First time on CD! - Exquisitely
remastered from the original tapes! - Wonderfully packaged
as usual, with wonderful liner notes by Mr. Tim Forster.
- Another in our amazing and varied A&M SOUND series...the
cream of a wonderful label at it's zenith!

Momus
Ocky Milk
PS, US Picasso, so they say, had to learn to paint like
an adult before he could start scrawling like a child.
Maybe the same is true for indie veteran Momus, because
on his new album "Ocky Milk" he's gone far beyond
the literary singer-songwriter fare of his 90s records
(think Tom Lehrer with a laptop). The new record is strange,
twilit stuff. Pop songs get fed through Google translation
engines then crooned underwater, absurd vaudeville numbers
about death accompany a Bonnie Prince Charlie car commercial
shot in Japan. The weirdest thing, though, is just how
relaxing it ends up feeling. Like having your back scratched
as you fall asleep.

Montevideo
Transoceanico
PS, SPAIN It had to be that way - Montevideo's longest
album so far (and their first) had to be called "Transoceánico",
mainly for these three reasons: First of all, because Montevideo
are a Spanish-Argentinian duo, a project rooted in both
sides o the Atlantic. Manu C. Villalba y Damiana Dubatti
started this venture in 2002, setting out to create music
with a penchant for delicate, distinguished, evoking dance
pop, as proved by this record. Their life, where trips
across the ocean are so frequent, has come to symbolise
thir musical journey, too. Secondly, because, as a consequence,
their inspiration often comes from their experience as
seasoned travellers. The sleeve, by Nacho Olivares, mirrors
this fact and mixes it beautifully with appropriate colours
and textures for reflecting the band's particular universe.
Last, because journeys are part of the electronica tradition
- Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" was just
the start of a new era in which Montevideo are set for
new wanderings. They took off on their airplane ("El
avión", from their debut CD EP "Ella y él")
and now they're bound for new routes, further from the
bands they are normally associated to (Astrud, Chico y
Chica, Parade, Apenino, Entre Ríos...) and absorbing
a new set of influences which include the use of organic
textures (guitars, ukuleles, mandolins...) and percussion.
This new side of the band has made them approach their
South American/River Plate roots. Of which songs like "Candombe" or "Zamba
acuática", are surprising examples. All in
all, "Transoceánico" is more than a nice
set of pictures taken from far away. In fact, it is a rich
collection of songs inspired in carefully chosen stories,
landscapes and themes very personal for the band. This
record is a whole, and thus must be listened to grasp Montevideo's
way of understanding pop music. This doesn't mean it is
a difficult album - at first listen, these ten songs in "Transoceánico" will
get you hooked. The bands vocal versatility ensures an
unmonotonous experience that not many bands can beat. Their
personal take on "Táctica y estrategia",
by Mario Benedetti (the genius from Montevideo) has helped
them order the songs in the album, which starts with Damiana's
sweet lead vocals in songs such as "Nunca sabrás",
with its glorious sixties sound, or the moving "Rápido",
wich opens the way for Manu to take the lead and make the
expedition arrive safely to its destination, with songs
like the mysterious "Te veo y no te veo", the
delicate "Pasan y se van", the christmassy "Renos
en la autopista" or the frantic "Autoinmunidad",
to name but a few.

Naysayer, The
Smoke Reality
PS, US The Naysayer's new record Smoke Reality was designed
to mess up your mind. Anna Padgett is the Naysayer: a Texan/Louisianian
Brooklyn transplant whose lyrics may shock you, confuse
you, make you laugh out loud, turn red, or feel like puking.
Despite the ganja vibe evoked by the title, you don't have
to be on drugs to enjoy Smoke Reality. Anna's straight
thoughts are way more psychedelic than your stoned ones.
However, this is not to say that her songs don't sometimes
stray towards the gay. If it's not working with a boy,
she gets a girl: "Leave no stone unturned." And
when Anna sings, "Why don't we do it on a leaf?" you
might find yourself thinking, "That is so much sexier
than doing it in the road." However, not every song
is about the pansexual paradigm. All the human emotions
get dressed up in Anna's poetic love: "Lose Yourself
in Nature and Find Peace" is a city dweller's vision
of spiritual nirvana; "Parents" is a politically-charged
cautionary tale addressed to anyone who has ever had them. "I'm
a Shark" is straight-up, "Don't Mess with Texas"-style
punk; the title track conjures up visions of Judee Sill
jamming with the Sea and Cake. Expertly recorded by Tara
Jane O'Neil in the Oregon woods, with amazing drumming
by Geoff Soule (Fuck) and additional instrumentation provided
by Tara Jane and Elizabeth Venable, Smoke Reality challenges
the unwritten rule of current music writing: classify,
categorize, stick everything in a bag. In keeping with
her previous four releases, the Naysayer continues to say
no to facile codification. This is bagless music, people!Repeated
listens of Smoke Reality reward the listener with new layers
of melodic and lyrical complexity. Some of the best music
demands an ounce of participation on the part of the listener.
Listen carefully, and this album may speak to you about
your own crazy life situation. It might also affect your
dreams... Don't wait until you're dead to find out what
you've been missing! Tracklisting: 1. smoke reality 2.

Pipas
Sorry Love
PS, US New record from Pipas on their own label. "Pipas
admirably handle the tricky task of blending apparently
conflicting influences and genres into one masterful whole;
so melodic electronica, drum'n'bass, acoustic folk and
frail fey indiepop all rub shoulders in a mix that you
think should be awkward, all elbows and skinned knees,
but is in fact a perfectly proportioned parcel of pure
Pop. Of course it helps that none of the songs outlives
its welcome, and with nothing clocking at more than a shade
under two and half minutes, these are pocket masterpieces
that light up the sky with brittle cracks of spangled phosphorescence." Tangents "Pipas
are pop's Umbrellas of Cherbourg. They are Technicolor
joy, gently bitten by the teeth of sadness. Their songs
(full of playful keyboards, springtime vocals and breathy
dinner theatre guitar) show a genuine pursuit of joy, but
end with remorse. After an unmistakable embrace of buttermilk,
bagels and the thick cream of mod culture, their songs
unravel like a Greek salad tragedy." Splendid "Here
are "six songs in the chord of bitter", according
to the accompanying tipsheet, but this is a strain that
you'll be familiar with. It's not 'bruised indie', Pipas
are too intelligent for that; neither is it fey, wet-behind-theears
melancholia. Instead, Pipas approach the ears from the
left, marrying the gentle experimentalism of Hefner to
the bleeding-heart honesty of Tompaulin or Tex La Homa.
Through it all though they shoot an unexpected seam of
sunshine pop, often sounding exactly like a disinterested,
disheartened Pizzicato Five. It's not one to listen to
if your girlfriend's just walked out on you, though it
might at least allow you to make sense of your predicament.
Who says music can't improve your life?" Logo Magazine

Plastic D'Amour
Nicolas
PS, SPAIN Instead of bearing children, Plastic d'amour
deliver records with baby names. After Olivia (siesta 178
- release date: 29.09.03) a new common name, Nicolás,
appears in 2006. He is indeed the adolescent brother of
a well grown Olivia. Some people say that he is a clumsy
and thuggish juvenile guy compared to fragile Olivia. Nicolás
seems to have an uncertain future versus the well-programmed
life of fortunate Olivia. He might need a tutor. Three
years have passed since Olivia left home and now Nicolás
enjoys to be in the limelight. This album signals a new
level of maturity for the venerable Madrid ensemble and
a good opportunity to expose Blanca Lacasa and Alberto
Matesanz from the band Plastic d'Amour in their birthday
suit: brutality (Le réveil); raw nudity (Plus rien);
light psychedelia (Détour) and pleasant darkness
(J'ai peur). This is an extremely listenable album and
the more listens you give it, the more you find to love.
Naked guitars run throughout their music whereas there
is a solid and elliptical sonic architecture that shows
scattered moments and confusion. Nicolás is somehow
a playful and maverick person, exactly like debonair Blanca
and Alberto. Alberto is behind other projects such as Mate
and apart from being a reputed architect he is a bright
and fecund inhouse songwriter at Siesta (Escarlatinas,
Cristina Georgina, Bel Divioleta). Blanca is a pretty journalist
and a true talented lyricist. Her lyrics are poignant and
heartfelt. The record is a fascinating ragbag similar to
the private room of Nicolás, a farrago. And Plastic
d'amour proves to be one of the brighter stars of the international
pop underground in recent years. They have unquestionably
a distinctive approach to pop music, effortlessly building
a pleasant, floating, insulated tiny world you get lost
in right away. A very good place to be.

Progrram
Autumn: How To Use Brain To Find Inner m*
PS, US This is probably the most sick, unpredictable and
heavy Polish album which I have recently had in my hands.
During several years of their existence, Progrram has made
long, and pretty intricate path: from a bit psychedelic
hardcore, through the period of fascination with intelligent
metal such as Meshuggah and Kobong, to... exactly, to what?
If the preceding Blackmeat of W.B. EP had brought to mind
the most rocky achievements of John Zorn or free rock of
Cpt. Beefheart and Zappa, the full album would make associations
of any kind far less important. Clearly, the musicians
are still attached to a guitar rock out: generally, the
whole album is sharp, guitar shred, taking place between
avant-garde metal and Washington hard core. Here, we can
hear the echoes of the latest works of VoiVod more clearly
than on the EP, or maybe the remains of something that
imbued to Canadians' music from overwhelming records of
Neurosis. If you like, you can also follow the traces of
King Crimson, especially those which were left by gig improvisations
from the mid 70's. However, such improvisations do not
exploit the contents of the album. Progrram seems to work
out their own language - souped-up by the deep knowledge
of aggressive avant-garde of the last two decades - but
still original. Even more, because claiming the influence
of this part of avant-garde tradition that so far hasn't
been immensely interesting to Polish artists.

Ruiz, Florencia
Cuerpo
PS, MEXICO Flo Ruiz has been selected for a feature on
Paste magazine's forthcoming recommended new music download
site. VERDIGRIS, a new Mexican label by the folks at Static
Discos, starts with the debut from Argentinean composer
Florencia Ruiz and her album 'Cuerpo'. Florencia Ruiz was
born in Buenos Aires in 1977 and is considered as one of
its leading musical proponents, outside the boundaries
of conventional pop music. The musical work of Florencia
Ruiz is aimed at the composition of songs, in the most
classical sense. She has also created music for art installations
and dance ensembles. Her music is a natural mix of contemporary
and popular music, an ideal and personal search full of
subtle arrangements for strings and piano. 'Cuerpo' is
filled with restrained and minimalist spaces that create
a soft and hard silences. Simple and complex, 'Cuerpo'
is a recording clothed with clear words and strong soulful
melodies. Her first two recordings, the 'Centro' EP and
this album, were recorded in home equipment, and what shines
through is the natural beauty of songs that were conducted
and arranged in a simple manner. The casual ncorporation
in the recording sessions of "found sounds",
electronic clatter, guitars and improvised keyboards speak
of a transparency in the writing process that Florencia
Ruiz used when creating 'Cuerpo'. In her minimalist lyrics
there is an evident torrent of emotion and introspection,
which Florencia Ruiz refers to as "little phrases
that want to paint something, with no strong or large meaning.
Small phrases that tune themselves to the melodies of my
voice" 'Cuerpo' is a conceptual album "in which
all of the songs speak of the body", explains Florencia
Ruiz, "they speak of different bodies, the child's
body, the distance of bodies. The relation we have with
bodies, the way we sometimes attack them, and not always
in the physical sense, the space and shapes of things around
us" The Verdigris release of 'Cuerpo' includes a remix
by Murcof of the track 'Siberia'. Verdigris will release
Florencia's second album, 'Correr', in 2007.

Sparklehorse
Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain
PS, US New album, four years in the making! Features contributions
from Dave Fridmann, Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd, Tom Waits,
and Danger Mouse. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Despite the wait,
Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain ends
up feeling like quintessential Sparklehorse: there are
some driving, searching rockers ("Ghost in the Sky");
some otherworldly ballads ("Return to Me"); lots
of mellow, thoughtful pop; and just as many lyrics overflowing
with images of honey, flowers, dirt, ghosts, and (of course)
horses. This time around, though, it all feels more streamlined
and straightforward... Nevertheless, there's still a beautiful
balance of atmosphere and songcraft... The most remarkable
feature of Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain
is its almost narcotic gentleness, particularly on "See
the Light," "Morning Hollow" (a track with
Tom Waits that was left over from the It's a Wonderful
Life sessions), and the title track, which closes the album
with ten minutes of serene atmospherics. Peaceful and undeniably
pretty..." (Heather Phares)

Steinbruchel
Stage
PS, US Stage is Steinbrüchel's second full-length
solo release on LINE. The album contains 10 scenes that
move between warm organic and melodic digitalized sounds
and cold crystalline-like sparks. The sounds and compositions
are even more detailed and have a more melodic approach
then previous recordings by Steinbrüchel. Single isolated
and stretched tones are structured together with smaller
loops and particles of clicks and noises into dense atmospheres.
Parts of the sounds used in several scenes are based on
piano recordings by Bernd Schurer and/or guitar recordings
by Tomas Korber. For the first time Steinbrüchel has
used and processed recordings of acoustical instruments
to this extent in his compositions. Stage brings to life
once again a collection of precise and carefully composed
structures and textures, which are formed into different
scenes where they all interweave with each other. All the
tracks were composed in 2005 for the interactive dance
performance HYBRIDOME, produced by Avventure in Elicoterro
Prodotti - Ariella Vidach AiEP. The tracks on the CD release
are in a different order and are also structured differently
than the actual still unfinished dance performance. Ralph
Steinbrüchel, born in 1969, studied Communication
Design at Central Saint Martins School in London, where
he acquired a Masters of Arts and Design with distinction.
He now lives and works as a musician and graphic designer
in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2002 his composition zwischen.raum
[domizil] was distinguished with the Max Brand Award for
Electronic Music [phonoTAKTIK.02 Festival, New York]. In
the same year he received a compositional scholarship from
Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland, to work on his
release circa [LINE, US].

PS, US Domestic release for mega-hyped Swedish dance-rock

um, intellectual (how did that happen?). Nonetheless, these
former punk teens have developed into curiously canny mashers,
juggling mirror-globe foot-stompers ("Different Sound"),
'60s frat riff-cum-ragamuffins ("Cobrastyle), neon

Veruca Salt
Resolver
PS, UK Veruca Salt was one of the greatest rock soap operas
since Fleetwood Mac or Hüsker Dü, as longtime
friends Louise Post and Nina Gordon had a bitter falling
out over stolen boyfriends, stabbed backs, and general
unpleasantness. Gordon set out on a solo career, while
Post dug in her heels, retained the Veruca Salt name, assembled
a new band, and recorded the third Veruca album, 2000's
Resolver. The friendship with Gordon wasn't the only severed
relationship Post endured between 1997's Eight Arms to
Hold You and Resolver -- she also broke up with Foo Fighters
leader Dave Grohl. Now, the title of the record may suggest
that she's trying to resolve her feelings toward these
breakups, but the album plays as a relentless, unmitigated
stream of bile. Never once does Post let up her attack
on Gordon and Grohl, except for when it loses a little
focus and becomes a vicious attack on the world in general.
All of this is set to music that's halfway between American
Thighs and Blow it Out Your Ass and completely dated in
2000. By any conventional yardstick, this does not result
in a good album, but it surely is a fascinating listen.
There's something unintentionally strange and perverse
about the record, like being assaulted by a half-forgotten,
half-drunken acquaintance, intent on filling you in on
every single excruciating detail of their miserable life
-- at top volume, no less.

Weekend
La Varieté
PS, UK La Varieté was the 1982 debut album by Weekend,
formed by Alison Statton of much-loved Welsh avant-garde/indie
pioneers the Young Marble Giants alongside guitarists Simon
Booth and Spike. A beautifully realised and delicate collection
of songs set against a jazz backdrop, it switches across
myriad musical settings including samba, cabaret, Afrobeat
and highly personal, confessional pop. The album was originally
released in 1982 on the Rough Trade label and made it to
No 4 in the independent charts staying in there for 15
weeks. It was revered by critics on release as a bold new
departure from the prevailing post-punk ethos and served
as a major influence on Saint Etienne, the Sundays, Belle
And Sebastian and many others. This comprehensive reissue
features nine bonus tracks, including demos and 12-inch
versions of singles 'A View From Her Room' and 'Drumbeat
For Baby', and liner notes prepared by the band itself.

West, Mae
The Fabulous Mae West
PS, US 'He who hesitates is a damned fool'. 'His mother
should have thrown him away and kept the stork'. 'I generally
avoid temptation unless I can't resist it'. 'Marriage is
a great institution, but I'm not ready for an institution
yet'. 'You're never too old to become younger'. Just a
few quotations from the immortal Mae West, one of the Monstres
sacrees of the modern world. From her celebrated career
on Broadway in the 1920s (where plays like 'SEX' made her
both a star and a national scandal!) to her storming of
Hollywood (where her double entendre packed movies saved
paramount Studios from the depression) Mae West will always
be a legend. More than capable of handling the music numbers
both in her stage work and movies, she started to record
risque rock'n'roll material in the early 1950s. Sensing
a kindred spirit in the music, this great CD is based on
her first album in the genre, totally rockin' and totally
filthy - in the nicest possible way. Her later albums in
the 1960s and 1970s were produced by legends like David
Mallet (supervisor on SHINDIG!) music historian and unlikely
pop star Ian Whitcomb, and Michael Lloyd of The WCPAEB.
Now hear where it all began, as Mae treats rock'n'roll
as she did Ragtime and Jazz before them... as a mere vehicle
for her suggestiveness, and what a ride! Rock n Roll has
NEVER sounded so filthy! NEVER BEFORE ON CD - nobody dared!
Wonderfully remastered in true Rev-Ola style! A must for
all fans of Rockin' mayhem...and general naughtyness!!!

revisits the eerie Throbbing Gristle-esque vocal deployment

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 21ST)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and
unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor
Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite
singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined
Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks
too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol
left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when
the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal
demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator.
Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane
Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore
Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark",
was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in
Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded
in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique
bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music
bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud
Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St.
Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The
Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully,
Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together.
Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and
smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun
during college on the south side of Chicago and completed
it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre
Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between
those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian
seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training
to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done
without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings
four of the best songs on the album, but she also made
important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music.
We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and
it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico
recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin
Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent
backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one
song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

Broadfield Marchers
When The Lifted Connive (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US The members of BROADFIELD MARCHERS have been quietly
writing and recording power-pop gems for several years.
Until now, few folks have walked in the hazy sunshine of
the Louisville, KY trio. The vault has finally been cracked,
with their debut long-player "When the Lifted Connive." While
there is a certain tip of the hat to ROBERT POLLARD's anthems,
deeper influences are shared with GbV's captain - ranging
from BADFINGER to CHEAP TRICK to early BEE GEES. All the
while the Marchers avoid clichéd tribute, maintaining
a freshness not unlike contemporary practitioners such
as FIELD MUSIC and THE SHINS. Fronted by the brothers ZDOBYLAK,
Broadfield Marchers are Dustin on lead vocals and guitar,
Mark on bass and backing vocals, along with Justin Carter
on drums. As is the ST. IVES way, "When the Lifted
Connive" is STRICTLY LIMITED - in this case to 300
numbered copies. Though in an effort for the record to
live on, ST. IVES WILL BE, FOR THE FIRST TIME, ALSO BE
RELEASING THE TITLE DIGITALLY. But we all know mp3s don't
look as good on your record shelf.

into my cell phone recorder while I was driving. Others
were triggered by overheard conversations, loops brought
in from home, field recordings or sounds we made in the
studio before the tape was rolling," says Rutili.
Both Rutili's & Becker's soundtrack work are more atmospheric,
however the challenge of enhancing a scene of film w/out
cluttering it or overwhelming it informed their approach
to the new recording. Limitations, obstructions & darkness, & the
new possibilities they illuminate; roots & crowns.

Accompanied by a pair of remixes from avant-electronic
artist LOGREYBEAM (TYPE RECORDS) and DJ POIGNANT, "Sunrise" brings
a warm thaw to "Murmurs," its minimal heartbeat
rhythm thumping beneath transparent washes of reverberating

Chatham, Rhys
Two Gongs (1971) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US The hour-long "Two Gongs" fills the entirety
of [this] disc with its ethereal, droning psychedelia.
While written in 1971, the '89 recording documented here
features CHATHAM, along with fellow composer YOSHIMASA
WADA coaxing heavy, overlapping tones out of a pair of
Chinese gongs. The instruments buzz and hum, moving in
waves from deafening rattles to soft, muted drones. The
monstrous noise that Chatham concocts is far more akin
to the seismic crashes of monstrously distorted guitar
feedback than that of two unprocessed slabs of metal, and
it proves the composer's interest in creating a similar
world of sound out of whatever instrument currently proved
his muse. On disc, the performance is jaw-droppingly powerful,
a monumental chunk of glorious noise.

PS, US The lyrics are less obtuse, the arrangements more
inventive & it feels more realized than the band's

Dyrdin
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 3RD)
PS, US Dyrdin, Reykjavik, Iceland. There are only 300,000
people who live in Iceland, 80% believe in elves. Dýrðin
brings the mythologies of elves, comic book heroes and
Star Trek to life with their edgy pop. Dýrðin
was formed in Reykjavik in 1994 by Einar and Maggi, having
both played in various underground rock groups for a few
years, teamed up with Þorvaldur Gröndal, to
produce silly little pop songs, with a twist, in Maggi's
bedroom. They got hold of a Dr. Rhythm drum machine and
an old saggy keyboard and started churning out tunes on
a Tascam 4-track Portastudio. Einar's sister was hastily
recruited to sing. Hafdis surprised everyone by suddenly
displaying singing talent and a knack for rocking out on
stage. After a brief hiatus, they're back on the scene
playing locally at the Iceland Airwaves festival, Innupukinn
and recently at Popfest! New England in Northampton, MA.
The drum machine has been dismissed in favor of a real
live punk drummer named Tóti, who also plays in
the legendary Icelandic punk band, Vonbrigdi. Vonbrigdi
are a recently resurrected punk band who were at the forefront
of the punk wave along with such bands as Purrkur Pillnikk
(featuring Einar Orn of Sugarcube fame), Fraebblarnir,
the glue-sniffing Sjalfsfroun, and Bjork's band Tappi Tikarrass.
In a departure from bass, guitar and keyboards, the band
has now reached new heights with a full, five member line-up,
in both live performances and recording. From the Icelandic
music magazine, Grapevine: "This is a band I've had
the pleasure of seeing on many occasions, and have watched
them grow. Dýrðin's driving, New Wave pop is
well-served by a formidable drummer, who can be best described
as a hard-hitting psycho. They carried their numbers across
so well that before long they started playing their songs
faster than usual ... Dýrðin finished their
set with the singer and keyboardist dancing continuously,
the crowd elated..." RIYL: The Icicles, All Girl Summer
Fun Band, The Sugarcubes, The Cardigans, Buzzcocks, The
Ramones, Blonde Redhead, The Raveonettes, Serge Gainsbourg.

El Goodo
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US Out of the haze of the velvet morning comes the
first band to ever put the small town of Resolven, at the
throbbing heart of Neath Valley, Wales, on the map. They
are called, quite simply, EL GOODO, and their debut, self-titled
album is a gloriously effortless piece of pop music perfection.
El Goodo was unleashed upon the British record-buying public
by their good friends and countrymen SUPER FURRY ANIMALS,
who originally released their self-titled debut on their
very own independent label, PLACID CASUAL, in late 2005.
In many ways, El Goodo wear their hearts on their sleeves,
their influences are many and their knack for melodies
impressive. Taking cues from places as diverse at the ELEPHANT
6 collective to the fuzzed up tones of Scotland's C86 post-punk
bands, the mysterious and enigmatic members of El Goodo
make a wonderful racket.

They depart leaving a gift... Five dark, dreamy, emotional
and melodic songs. Like their debut album, '[It's Too Bad
You're Leaving' (also available), this is lush, minimalist
Nordic pop, the creation of songwriter Andreas Lundmark
with vocals by Evelina Hagglund. Not too far removed from
similarly female-fronted combos like Club 8 and Darcy,
with nifty touches of jazz and exotica and the occasional
splash of casual dancefloor friendliness.

guitar) and Torbjörn Håkansson (programming),
two lads brought together by a mutual loathing for the
Göteborg "rock scene", and by punching each
other up at an office party. Definitely a special brand
of tension here! IT'S A TRAP! REVIEW: "It sounds like
what would happen if Pet Shop Boys and Sarah Records had

Flying Canyon
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 3RD)
PS, US Like The Eagles on Robitussin, Flying Canyon present
dark, distinct odes to California's grand landscape in
song. Existing in the sun baked tradition of burnt-out
Cosmic Californians like Sky Sunlight Saxon, Skip Spence,
Phil Perlman, The Rockets and David Crosby, Flying Canyon
perform minimalist folk/country/rock slowed to a funeral
crawl. Helmed by Cayce Lindner (himself the sonic heir
to Kristofferson's throne), the songs of FC are wrapped
in distant canyon reverb with booming fuzz bass & heavy
percussion underneath. Lindner, with a trilling delivery
of the Neil Young/Jerry Garcia axis, weaves mournful tales
of eternal love and despair. Flying Canyon's self-titled
debut is the sound of a warped CSN&Y cassette playing
on a boom box deep in a ravine somewhere (in California).

Greater Than One
Kill the Pedagogue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US This is one of the earliest archives of Greater
Than One, originally released in 1985 on a limited edition
cassette in a red Chinese envelope with cut outs of paper,
a sticker, image, and poster; wrapped with a red yarn and
sealed in a ziplock bag. The music is aggressive and punchy,
with beats and horror film samples, yet the underlying
drones are dark and thunderous, which oddly enough doesn't
sound out of place when listened to alongside the darker
modern masters like Sunn O))), Oren Ambarchi, or Scorn.
It's no surprise the group's first full-length record,
1987's All the Masters Licked Me, was released by Lustmord
and Graeme Revell's Side Effects Records. This is the first
time for this recording to appear on CD, and it's enhanced
with content of images, text, and bonus audio files. Number
four in the Brainwashed Handmade series, this was also
letterpressed by Mike Babcock at Interrobang (whose clients
have included Hydrahead, Relapse, Kimchee, Tumult, and
SharkAttack) and is limited to 500 copies.

Hermine
Lonely At The Top + Extras (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER
3RD)
PS, UK Reissues by cult new wave diva Hermine, memorably
described in 1982 as "the MOR 'chick singer' shifted
dramatically out of focus." An essentially unclassifiable
performer, whose career spans acting, comedy and tightrope
walking as well as singing, Hermine's musical reputation
rests on her debut album, The World On My Plates (1982),
the allure of her vaudeville torch songs was enhanced by
its iconic cover image of the artist loading singles into
a dishwasher. Her second album Lonely at the Top, released
in 1984, features ten songs including left-field covers
of Yoko Ono's Death of Samantha and Neil Sedaka. The album
also includes original material such as Hollow Hello and
Sleepy Feeling, recorded with a large cast of guest musicians,
and compared by one reviewer to The Rite of Spring. Once
again, the songs flaunt Hermine's deliberately idiosyncratic
femme fatale vocal style. The bonus tracks include several
songs recorded in Switzerland for an unreleased third album.
Digitally restored from the original master tapes, Lonely
at the Top + Extras features an attractive booklet including
artist biography and images. Biography: born in Paris,
Hermine Demoriane performed as a tightrope walker in the
1970s, including an appearance in Derek Jarman's punk film
Jubilee in 1977. Her recording career included two albums,
The World On My Plates (Crammed, 1982) and Lonely at the
Top (Salome, 1984). She has also provided vocals for the
television comedies French & Saunders and Absolutely
Fabulous, and published a book, The Tightrope Walker.

Hisato Higuchi
Dialogue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US "Dialogue" is the first American release
by Tokyo's HISATO HIGUCHI. Originally a puppeteer, Higuchi
has transformed his glacial, shadow-box inspired hand movements
to the twilight theater of electric guitar. His six-string
melodic tones and hushed vocals fan out from the haunted
torch songs of PATTY WATERS and moon-like ambiance. Higuchi's
seemingly wordless Japanese croon is a smoky, after-hours
call of loss or introspection. The songs of "Dialogue" float
like specters, each piece manifests itself in a unique
and singular conception that seeps into your mind and soul.
The perfect introduction for stateside listeners.

Some Blood Will Stick (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 24TH)

and Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards). They've been laying
down billowing sheets of tetonic guitar drone-noise since

electronics. Some Blood Will Stick is a collection of tracks
from their ultra-limited self produced label Heavy Blossom.
Songs were taken from Swoon Scream (2004) and Awful Symmetry
(2005) with one additional track. What makes this disc
more than a simple re-release is the extraordinary scalpel
re-editing by Matthew Bower and the crushing and invigorating
mastering by Scott Hull at Visceral Sound making this one
of the heaviest and most beautiful Hototogisu releases.

And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER

PS, US On his new album "And Now That I'm In Your
Shadow", Jurado once again is calling us out to meet
him. With the help of now permanent members ERIC FISHER
and JENNA CONRAD, Damien has taken on a new side to his
career. No longer is DAMIEN JURADO just another solo artist
but a band. Rarely from now on will any live performance
just include a man with his ideas and guitar but a continuous
collaboration in lyrics and sound creating a backdrop to
a world that is filled with desperation and blessings,
life discovered and life that is lost. Together they will
lead you into the lyrical world of the forgotten faces
that you once knew. The songs are old friends and close
relatives, quarreling loves and love lost, the very thoughts
that cross your mind when you are alone or among the crowd.
Forever in your shadow and trapped between the lines that
you write down, Damien Jurado is still here and going nowhere.

perhaps, but no less funny. When you have ceased to expect

Low Frequency In Stereo
Last Temptation of... the Low Frequency in Stereo, Vol.
1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 31ST)
PS, US Domestic release for Norwegian band's compelling
second effort. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Any band that comes
from Norway but claims to have "one foot in Pompeii
and one in space" is a band that deserves a listen.
And on their third album, Low Frequency in Stereo don't
disappoint, though they do occasionally bemuse or even
befuddle. Their sound is a dense, almost claustrophobic
amalgam of seriously low-fidelity guitars, horns and cheesy
keyboards, and their songs have a punky sense of urgency
and sloppy structure. Imagine watching a 1960s spy movie
with a Troggs album turned up to the same volume as the
soundtrack, and you might have an idea of what kind of
sound to expect here. And that's a compliment, mostly,
especially when the short, sharp lyrical blast of "Big
City Lights" cuts through the song's cluttered soundscape,
or when "Axes" makes you realize what the early
Joy Division would have sounded like had their only keyboard
been a Farfisa organ, or when "21" makes you
simultaneously fall in love with Hanne Andersen and wonder
whether she's getting the psychiatric help that she sounds
like she needs." (Rick Anderson)

M Coast
Say It In Slang (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 24TH)
PS, US Formerly MARSHMALLOW COAST. R.I.Y.L.- Kevin Ayers,
Aisler's Set, Steely Dan. Back in 1997, newly transplanted
Athenians Derek Almstead and Andy Gonzales divided most
of their time between the exploding Elephant Six scene
and their day jobs at a local sub shop. Their co-worker
Carlton Owens, a fantastic and accomplished local drummer,
was busied with a different side of the local music scene,
playing multiple jazz and blues gigs. Nine years later,
the three have reunited as the core rhythm section of M
Coast, along with Sara Kirkpatrick and Emily Growden, two
fresh talents on the scene. When a young Andy Gonzales
first moved to Athens in tow with The Music Tapes, his
project Marshmallow Coast was already in motion with a
few singles, cassettes and even a finished first album, "Timesquare".
Built on a love of jazz and impressionist classical composers,
combined with the bedroom D.I.Y. songwriting of the emerging
4-track generation, Marshmallow Coast was a breath of depth
and complexity amidst the three chord world. Almost immediately
upon arriving in town, Andy met Derek Almstead through
their E6 cohorts. Derek had arrived the previous year,
and had run into another burgeoning songwriter, Kevin Barnes,
at a local party. The two, along with bassist Bryan Poole,
had just gotten Of Montreal up and running by the time
Andy arrived. Derek, secretly a monster bass player, had
just taken up the drums for the fledgling band, getting
a big boost by taking some lessons with Carlton. Derek
and Andy became fast friends, sharing a love of the 60's
psyche-pop that was already getting E6 excited, but also
of composers Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, and Ravel, the
jazz of Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, and Eric Dolphy,
and the funk of Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown,
and Stevie Wonder. Diverse influences to be sure, especially
in the modern, self-regurgitating, indie rock scene. They
made some records- a lot of records! In the following years,
Andy worked with Marshmallow Coast, Of Montreal, The Music
Tapes, The Instruments, The Olivia Tremor Control, and
Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't. Derek made records for
and with Of Montreal, The Summer Hymns, Elf Power, The
Sunshine Fix, Great Lakes, Marshmallow Coast, Hawk and
a Hacksaw, the Circulatory System, Visitations, The 63
Crayons, The Instruments, Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't,
and on, and on... Their two collaborations within Marshmallow
Coast - "Marshmallow Coasting" and "Ride
the Lightning"- often drew comparisons to Steely Dan,
and maybe not so surprisingly. After all, Steely Dan were/are
two hyper-talented, self-taught, studio savvy, jazz loving,
opinionated, and pop-culture obsessed funny guys with a
full compliment of guest studio musicians. Andy and Derek
left Of Montreal in 2003, Andy to get a nursing degree
and Derek to focus on other projects and work on getting
his own music recorded. Andy and Sara Kirkpatrick made
a Marshmallow Coast record together (with the talented
engineer and musician Jason NeSmith of Casper and the Cookies)
called "Antistar", featuring Sara's beautiful
flute-work and a more stripped-down, focused sound. Meanwhile
Derek met Emily Growden while working on years of built-up "pieces" he
had written, trying to make them into something more digestible
and song-oriented, while highly influenced by the more
abstract pop songs of Brian Eno, the Moles, and Brian Wilson.
When Andy enlisted Derek to start recording and contribute
to a new "Marshmallow Coast" record, he had already
guested multiple times on Derek's ongoing solo recordings.
A "eureka" moment occurred when Derek, fueled
by his recently departed father Murray's long running request/criticism
for "more voices!" in the bands in which he played,
had the idea to join these coinciding projects together.
Thus "Say it in Slang", M Coast's newest release
was born. Andy's dream of writing songs for a female singer
was realized when Emily agreed to lend her sweet, smooth
voice to his demanding melodies and complex improvisational
guitar work, while Derek's songs focus on deceptively simple
elements stacked upon each other with broad sweeping changes
and dancing bass lines. Sara's flute adds additional flare
by weaving into the music in less traditional ways, and
Carlton's hyper diverse and professional drumming -plus
a talented cast of local guest musicians completes the
newly renamed M Coast's first album, "Say it in Slang" and
it's companion instrumental release, "Bizarre Classical".
Nine years later it's no longer just a project, it's a
band.

PS, US The end result of Nate Kinsella being sentenced

MABD's bristling, garage-punk-pop, but not so far removed
from previous releases, still sung in Swedish at any rate!
During the recording session, which was produced by old

Meeting Places, The
Numbered Days (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 3RD)
PS, US Numbered Days is the second album of luminous, infectious
noise-pop by Los Angeles' The Meeting Places. On their
sophomore record the quartet has written ten new songs
that craftily combine melodic indie-pop with the tremulous
soundscapes first explored on their debut Find Yourself
Along The Way (Words On Music, 2003). Numbered Days was
recorded at The Ship by Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy, Earlimart).
With ten songs clocking in at thirty-three minutes, Numbered
Days evokes a leaner, more urgent approach to songwriting,
in the spirit of The Jesus and Mary Chain's Darklands or
The Shins' Oh, Inverted World.

Monochrome Set
Destiny Always Calls Twice (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER
3RD)
PS, UK When the British art-school punk band the B-Sides
changed their name and direction to become Adam & the
Ants, guitarist/vocalist Bid and guitarist Lester Square
opted out to form their own group, the Monochrome Set.
Founded in London in 1978, the band was quickly snapped
up by the Rough Trade label, and during 1979 issued three
singles - "He's Frank," "Eine Symphonie
des Grauens," and their signature number, "Monochrome
Set" - all completely different in content and stylistic
approach. In 1980 the band released their debut album,
the cabaret-flavored Strange Boutique, followed later that
year by the singles "405 Lines" and "Apocalypso" as
well as another, more accessible full-length effort, Love
Zombies. They returned in 1982 with a cleaner, more melodic
sound on the LP Eligible Bachelors; "The Jet Set Junta," a
satiric jab at the Falklands Islands conflict, became a
significant hit the next year. The band have had a long
association with Cherry Red Records - releasing countless
well received albums on the Cherry Red and El labels until
they disbanded in the mid-1990's. Their recordings remain
immensely popular and, the first ever DVD to feature the
band, "Destiny Always Calls Twice" will no doubt
be snapped up by their devoted fanbase. The DVD consists
of a collection of promo and live material originally released
on VHS in the early 1990's under the title "Destiny
Calling", along with some extremely rare bonus material
featuring the band performing in Japan and the USA. Amongst
the tracks featured are independent chart top twenty hit "Jacob's

My Brightest Diamond
Bring Me The Workhorse (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND is SHARA WORDEN, a trained
opera singer turned pop songwriter. Her debut album, "Bring
Me The Workhorse" courageously gathers all the essential
elements of classical and pop music to fashion an album
that reflects upon the sublime elements of both worlds.
These songs are simultaneously gentle and urgent, evoking
moments of tremendous joy and sorrow with the magnitude
of Italian opera and the modesty of a Japanese haiku. The
songwriting blurs the lines between rock show and recital,
incorporating the contrapuntal elements of a baroque love
song alongside love ballads and rock anthems. Her vocal
lines reached for Puccini, while her guitar style is more
akin to BLONDE REDHEAD or PJ HARVEY. The center of gravity
here is the workmanship of a woman whose imagination has
no limits.

Octopus Project, The/Black Moth Super Rainbow
The House of Apples and Eyeballs (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER
30TH)
PS, US "The House of Apples & Eyeballs" is
not a split, but a year-long, full-length collaboration
by both bands. The Octopus Project is known and loved for
their uncategorizable broken-guitars-meet-samplers-meet-drums-meet-drum
machines sound, while the musical island of Black Moth
Super Rainbow would rather play their songs in the woods
and not let you know if their gear is broken or working
just fine. Holding hands from Austin to Pittsburgh, they
set out to create one of the wilder pop records of the
year. For anyone familiar with both bands, may you find
yourself at peace with this dream record. But know that
not all is as it seems, and the challenge of figuring out
which band played which parts may sometimes be impossible.
While a couple tracks did make it to the record in their
original, one-band form, most were passed back and forth
for several rounds of dismemberment, rearrangement, and
augmentation. The result overflows with sonic treats: cut-up
beats and vocoder melodies collide with huge, distorted
riffs. A theremin orchestra descends into layered steel
guitars before all is dissolved in a wash of hazy synths.
The Octopus Project appears courtesy of Peek-A-Boo Records.
They have wowed audiences in 2006 at Coachella, and were
named one of Rolling Stone's breakout bands of SXSW. They
will soon be going into the studio to record their very
highly anticipated third album in 2007. Black Moth Super
Rainbow lives on Graveface Records, and although known
as somewhat of an enigma, has come out of the forest in
2006 to play at the request of bands like Of Montreal and
The Black Angels. They have been recording their third
full length album that will be released when the time is
just right.

Phelan, Patrick
Cost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US NOW ON VINYL, PATRICK PHELAN's third full-length
recording is called "Cost". To Phelan, it is
an understatement. For him, every opportunity explored
is another opportunity forgone. More so than on previous
Phelan records, "Cost" places an emphasis on
the guttural. His voice and words take center stage. He
is much less guarded on "Cost" than on previous
records. There is no lack of desperation in these new songs,
yet a hopeful tone is maintained throughout. Balance is
the key. Emotion is the lock. And simplicity is the door.
Like a finely-tuned architect, Phelan places all of his
songs in their proper space, not letting them get crowded
with unnecessary words or sounds. He also steers "Cost" from
tipping too far in the "minimalist" direction,
thanks in part to a bevy of guitar solos and to the abundance
of true rock moments that occur throughout the record.

Keep Cool...Guitar Solos 1950-53 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER

PS, UK Keep Cool - Guitar solos 1950-53, is very much a
sister record to FiveFour's recent Great Artistry of Django
Reinhardt (FIVEFOUR7), in that it concentrates on historic
recordings made in the last years of this great guitarists
life. These recordings simply underline the fact that Django
was the greatest guitarist who ever lived and as record
collector said when reviewing great artistry will be of
interest to anyone remotely interested in the guitar. Between
1946 and 1950, as his overall musical style gradually developed,
Django's alternated between acoustic guitar, electric arch
top guitar and-most often-acoustic guitar amplified through
a magnetic pick-up. These recordings on the electric guitar
in modern style and are quite sensational. Django's influence
on the modern movement could have been much greater with
another shot at America, but it was not to be. Nevertheless
his place in Jazz history is assured, and for many he will
continue to be the greatest guitarist that ever lived.

Rope
Heresy, and Then Nothing But Tears (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE
OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US ROPE formed in Poland as a guitar/bass duo in 1998.
Since relocating to Chicago in 2000 they have become one
of the city's most flummoxing avant rock groups. "Heresy,
and Then Nothing But Tears" is their second full-length
album. ROBERT IWANIK (bass, vocals), PRZEMYSLAW KRZYSZTOF
DRAZEK (guitar) and MICHAEL J. KENDRICK (trap set, percussion,
electronics) blend deconstructed strains of SWANS' emotional
weight and LAST EXIT's fury with KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA's classical
suspense into lush and often uncompromising no wave abrasion.
Rope's constantly evolving ocean of rhythms, screaming
guitar and Iwanik's hissing voice adds up to an ultra-dynamic
group force of cryptic awe. Features guest vocals from
GRAZYNA AUGUSCIK and songwriting/vocal collaboration by
OXBOW's EUGENE ROBINSON on four songs. Cover art by famed
Polish fringe painter STANISLAW IGNACY "Witkacy" WITKIEWICZ.

Tangerine Dream to form Kluster with friends Dieter Moebius
and Hans Joachim Roedelius. When Schnitzler left Kluster
they changed their name to Cluster eventually merging with
Michael Rother (of Neu!) to form Harmonia, a group who
Brian Eno once called the most important rock group on
the planet. Schnitzler also founded Eruption in 1970 along
with Klaus Schultz, Manuel Gottsching (Ash Ra Tempel),
and Klaus Freudigmann. Looking back at Conrad Schnitzler's
career it becomes obvious that he was an architecht who
helped draw the blueprints for some very significant musical

Trigger Trilogy (3XCD) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 24TH)
PS, US Conrad Schnitzler is a genuine legend in the krautrock
and electronic music worlds. Schnitzler studied under Joseph
Beuys before joining an early Tangerine Dream. Their first
album Electronic Meditation shows a band highly influenced
by Schnitzler's unique, singular approach. Schnitzler left
Tangerine Dream to form Kluster with friends Dieter Moebius
and Hans Joachim Roedelius. When Schnitzler left Kluster

with Klaus Schultz, Manuel Gottsching (Ash Ra Tempel),
and Klaus Freudigmann. Looking back at Conrad Schnitzler's
career it becomes obvious that he was an architecht who
helped draw the blueprints for some very significant musical
movements. Perhaps overlooked, or at least desperately
underappreciated, it hasn't slowed Schnitzler down. Since
leaving Kluster Conrad Schnitzler has composed dillegently
for electronics and piano. Now located in Dallgow Germany
he continues to accumulate equiptment and recordings of
what he says is "cold, hard electronic sound." Trigger
Trilogy consists of three discs each selected from hundreds
of hours of Schnitzler's private recordings. Each represents
a one of the few unique approaches that Schnitzler takes
to recording, each uniquely identified and defined by Schnitzler.
Within each of these recordings one can hear how Schnitzler
influenced a generation of artists not only in Germany
but the world around and how he's brought those sounds
into the modern day. It's also apparent in these recordings
that Schnitzler is a thoughtful and enlightened, a total
and pioneer floating freely in a world of sound. Trigger
One consists of what Schnitzler calls his Solo Voices or
Solo Electronics. This particular recording happens to
be rhythmically based electronic work. Recognizing that
in traditional music the melodic line is subordinate to
the ensemble leaving it no true impression of it's own
Schnitzler has liberated the solo voice in his own music
and given it it's own vocation as noise, tone and sound.
By superimposing several voices or forming a sound environment
by mixing Schnitzler has created new dimensions, worlds
of sound where the individual voice is no longer subservient
to synchronization or the conductor's baton. The results
are sound combinations which adhere to no logic. "The
strength of the individual voice lies in its freedom from
vis-a-vis any sound." Conrad Schnitzler. Trigger Two
is what Schnitzler refers to as Free Concert Mix Solos: "From
solo to mix, from melodic line to ensemble. Accumulation
of voices, note clusters which are not opposed to one other
but are equal and parallel in a free play of energy. The
mix of solo voices produces concentrations of notes and
noises, tangles, compressions, sound constellations, sound
catastrophes, acoustic phenomena's. The individuality of
each voice is absorbed into the chaos of the overall sound,
is held there and blurred. Musical developments emerge
from the atmosphere of the individual voices of the ensemble
and its variations. Sound sequences spill forth, revealing
tight and loose webs of notes, changes in tempo, varying
expressions of volume and dynamics and shifts in the direction
of the sound pattern. A sound chaos which appears to change
automatically becomes perceptible. the indeterminate starting
order for the solo voices create an open unfinished work,
containing a wealth of episodes with sound sequences, environmental
associations, stylistic devices from other worlds and interplay's
of nature and technology." Conrad Schnitzler. Trigger
Three, the final disc in the Trigger Trilogy, is a Con-Cert.
This is a tradition that Schnitzler has been working in
for quite some time. Originally using cassettes and now
using compact discs Schnitzler creates live mixes of multiple
recordings. The sounds are intentionally designed, shaped,
constructed and composed in specific relation to one another. "The
articulation of sound in an era where new technology allows
for the creation of an unlimited number of new sounds calls
for new recording techniques. These are offered by tape,
CD or computer hard disks. In the past I used conventional
cassettes to create my concerts, but now the sounds are
recorded on CD and can be used in the concerts thanks to
their enhanced quality. The individual tracks have fixed
starting points which can be adjusted by a number of seconds
and thus produce different results. The volume of the individual
tracks can be adapted to the acoustics of the location
and the listening experience will vary for each location
as a consequence." Conrad Schnitzler.

ROKY ERICKSON meets GREG SAGE in a field of flowers. CHRIS
SUTTON keeps the rhythms solid and driving yet simple,
in a Modern Lovers/Tronics kind of way, inciting dancers
to chant and yell "SPIDER MAGIC!" until they
fall on the floor, exhausted. TOBI VAIL's guitar playing
is deliberately sparse yet meticulous, the sound governed
by the use of a black and white Rickenbacker, generous
amounts of reverb and a 1960's Fender amp with the treble
on 11. The singing is classic Tobi Vail style, varying
between screamy screams and whisper-core. The best songs

Sudden, Nikki
The Truth Doesn't Matter (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US The Truth Doesn't Matter" is NIKKI SUDDEN's
final album. Completed just a week before he left for his
final American tour in March of 2006, there could not be
a more perfect swan song for a man whose personal life
and rock & roll life knew no boundaries. Nikki was
glowing with excitement when he flew across the Atlantic
for his final US tour. Not only was he ready to tour, but
he was so pleased with the new album he had in his satchel,
and had just completed his autobiography to boot. If Nikki's
49 well-lived years and 30+ years making music publicly
could be summed up in any way, shape or form, it was in
the two documents he had under his arm - one compact disc
and one manuscript. While we may have to wait a while longer
for the latter, we can now bask in the wonder of the former.
With all sentimentality aside, we will say that "The
Truth Doesn't Matter" is the best album Nikki has
made in over 20 years. But knowing that Nikki was never
one to put sentimentality aside, we will unabashedly employ
it when we assert that this is the best album of Nikki
Sudden's career. Recorded in Berlin in the latter months
of 2005, it was made on a steady diet of later period MARC
BOLAN glam, ROLLING STONES' honky blues, BOBBY WOMACKS's
soiled R&B, and '70s disco comps (with some repeated
ISLEY BROTHERS doses). While the fifteen tracks on the
album show these influences, more than anything, they reflect
the flamboyance and wonderful character of a man who seems
to have come from another time - a poet whose passion for
the written word and delight in its expression in multiple
forms was his life's dedication. This album is a celebration
of music and friendship, and just seeps with Nikki's love
for life. Listen closely and you may hear the hoofbeats
approaching in this poet's head on album closer "All
This Buttoning and Unbuttoning". Enjoy. He did.

Sybarite
Cut Out Shape (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US XIAN HAWKINS (aka SYBARITE) has been busy doing
a lot of things, but making a new album is not one of them.
After the release of his 4AD debut, "Nonument," Hawkins
found himself scoring an array of film and television projects
for clients ranging from VH1 to Playboy and everyone in
between. Temporarily diverted from following up "Nonument," Hawkins
instead took the time to focus on remixes and collaborations,
contributing only a handful of new songs to various compilations
and singles over the last four years. As it turns out,
the long delay was good for him, as the Sybarite of today
sounds remarkably fresh, with a wider range of tempos and
more varied instrumentation than most electronic and dance
artists. Hawkins has grown as both a composer and producer,
and "Cut Out Shape" benefits greatly from the
trees-before-the-forest work ethic that Hawkins has been
experiencing since 2002. The attention to detail is startling,
the product of spending four years on a set of songs with
no specific destination in mind beforehand. As much as "Cut
Out Shape" was originally designed to be more of a
collection of loose ends, it grew into what is now Sybarite's
finest hour yet, rivaling the finer moments of FOUR TET,
SIGUR ROS, TORTOISE, MOUSE ON MARS and THE NOTWIST.

PS, US Thighpaulsandra's newest release is the score to
an interactive video installation by New York-based visual

has been a member of Queen Elizabeth (with Julian Cope),
Spiritualized, and Coil and has released four full-length
albums on his own. Amanda Lepore has recorded music with
the Fatal Art Syndicate, has been featured on TV shows
like Entertainment Tonight, and has a Swatch watch, "Time
Tranny," which was at one point the fastest selling
limited edition Swatch! Daniel McKernan took photographs
and video of Amanda and combined them with music from Thighpaulsandra
to create the exhibition which opened in June of 2005 in
New York. Included as enhanced content is a video of the
installation with narrative by McKernan, an essay on "Is
Evolution Evil?," and schematic. The music is three
movements mixed by Thighpaulsandra into one long piece
which is just as eerie and precious as a superstar like
Amanda Lepore is. Like the previous Brainwashed Handmade

Transmission (Featuring Jonathan Kane)
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US Here is an extraordinary excavation from the buried
history of the Downtown NYC scene: the unreleased, self-titled "Transmission" EP,
recorded in 1981 - 82. Comprised of JONATHAN KANE and DANIEL
GALLIDUANI, the duo is one-half of the original version
of the behemoth band SWANS. TRANSMISSION both preceded
and ran concurrent with the formation of Swans (MICHAEL
GIRA was enough of a fan that he mixed Transmission's few
live shows), and much of their material evolved into Swans
tracks, including the standout "Weakling". Unclassifiable
within any conventional genre, it recalls the improvisation
and complex, trance-inducing beats of North African music
while adding a crust of No Wave bluster and a enough percussive
artillery to sink a small island. Galliduani, whose saxophone
is so heavily treated and processed that it sounds like
a wall of guitars, lays down drones then adds weird, fierce,
Eastern-tinged polyphonics; meanwhile Kane is a frenzied
dervish, generating complex, cross-tempos and rhythmic
subdivision. "Transmission" is not only an absolute
must-have for fans of either Swans or Jonathan Kane's bruising
present-day efforts (not to mention his fine work with
RHYS CHATHAM and LA MONTE YOUNG), but an essential missing
link from that Lower East Side scene of yesteryear.

Valente, Caterina
The Hi-Fi Nightingale (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 3RD)
PS, UK Caterina Valente was the first international girl
pop star and has much in common with the ye-ye girls of
the sixties, Francoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot, Sylvie Vartan
and Anna Karina currently so beloved in Japan and in underground
European pop circles. Her vocal range was often compared
to that of Yma Sumac and it was her distinctive voice,
allied with great charm and intelligence, which brought
her immediate commercial success, and this compilation
of her brilliant early work includes the three million
selling hits The Breeze and I, Malaguena and Love Paris.
This compilation has serious export potential to Europe,
Japan and Australia where she toured extensively and was
consistently successful. She was so successful in Germany
she is often mistakenly thought to be a German singer.
In the sixties and seventies Caterina recorded four albums
with her second husband, the gifted British jazz pianist
Roy Budd.

Music, Free Jazz- it just doesn't matter any more. What

All the music magazines that matter, here in UK and far
away on up the road love it, choose it, point it. And still
analyze it, looking for new hidden secrets. No other recording
like the masterpiece of The Beach Boys symbolizes the transition
to the adulthood that pop music experimented during the
60s. Its songs were an ode to a wasteful California that
was saying goodbye to its hedonistic fantasy. The very
last second before opening the eyes to the raw reality
of the post-hippism. No other record has been so dissected.
Thanks to that, Brian Wilson has mounted the melody winners'
podium. In those tracks, he squeezed out to the maximum
his two bigger talents: composition and production. He
made a masterful mirrow of the harmonic accessibility and
symphonic ambition. Brian had no academic training, but
with his visionary mathematical instincts he made possible
unrepeatable recording sessions. Musicians that had played
with Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole followed
his sonic instructions until the end. The result: 13 pieces
of music released in 1966 with a timeless emotional value.
The rest is history. As for example, the fact that they
are the main influence behind The Beatles's "Sgt.
Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band". That's why it was
more than a diplomatic compliment when some years ago Paul
McCartney sentenced that "God Only Knows" it's
his favourite song ever. The same can be said about this
affirmation made by legendary producer and "fifth
Beatle" George Martin: "If I only had to choose
one person as the main genius of popular music, I'd choose
Brian Wilson". Talking about music legends of the
20th century, the classical director and composer Leonard
Bernstein did put out these words: "Brian Wilson is
one of the most important modern musicians, his singing
is very poetic and shows beauty, even if he's doing it
from the dark side. He's a symbol of the new things in
pop culture, and also a symbol of the change that a lot
of people see in the future". Forty years later, "Pet
Sounds" is still gaining reputation and validity.
Its shadow is getting longer, the outstanding bands of
the present mention it constantly, the critics do the same.
Did we say forty years? So, it's time for a tribute. That's
what has thought the Spanish label Houston Party Records.
It had to be something special, so the company contacted
some of its favorites alternative/indie stars. All of them
said yes to the project. They were easy to convince: everybody
was a fan of the album. In "Do It Again: A Tribute
To Pet Sounds" there are renditions that chase the
footsteps of the original versions, but from a sort of
parallel roads, while others break the mould directly.
The sum of different personalities provides a sense of
constant surprise: just imagine Will Oldham and Patrick
Wolf in the same record, or Nobody and Daniel Johnston.
We feel seated in front of a kaleidoscope of musical points
of views. Interesting how all these artists talk to us
from that galaxy where Brian's mind lived in 1966, but
using refreshing and personal turnabouts. We hear idioms
these days. Some are stranger (Vic Chesnutt), some ask
for a sad waltz (Dayna Kurtz), some prefer a cold loneliness
(Micah P. Hinson) than a hotter community (Architecture
In Helsinki). Nobody wants to kill the father here (sorry,
Mr. Nietzsche), but nobody tries to sell cheap photocopies
of him. That's what happens when you travel with a bunch
of people that never subordinate their visions to the conventionalisms,
that don't follow the weak tendencies. Exactly the same
artistic ideology that Brian Wilson believed in that 1966.

Wilt
Dark Meadows (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, GERMANY Wilt's new album is also their first as a band,
with the electronic experimentation being combined with
acoustic walls of bass and noise. Wide, dusty and dark, "Dark
Meadows" displays Wilt's new psychedelic and atmospheric
approach to its deeply textured ambiances. "Dark Meadows" is
one the most rewarding and sombre of works of Wilt, for
it marries it organic darkness with an acute sense of melody
and an ever-present cavernous bass. A massive, encompassing
and profound work of art.
