Parasol New Arrivals • February 26, 2008

Hi folks,

Well, winter is continuously rearing its ugly head ‘round these parts and as Parasol pal Rachael Dietkus would say, it’s doin’ the two-step on my last nerve. But anyway, summer is right around the corner so enough with my complaining. Let’s move on to bigger and brighter things, shall we?

The new Beach House album has arrived safe and sound at Parasol HQ today and it’s making quite a stir in our quiet community as is the bitchin’ new 7” by Boris. As always, there are scads of new records for you to sift through so with that said, check out the list and we’ll talk more next week.

Be good,

Roy & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Beach House "Devotion" CD $14.25
The familiar organs, slide guitars & reverb are intact but they offer some new directions here. Having developed their craft exponentially since last year's debut, their new record is a crisp recording that showcases a set of fuller & richer songs, with the band taking the pop duo format to the limit. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With Devotion, Beach House prove once again that they're one of the more strangely named bands around. Their music is so lonely, so haunting, that the only beach house it evokes is a deserted one, stranded on a winter night so desolate that summer isn't even a memory. Then again, that atmosphere is precisely what made Beach House's self-titled debut so striking, and Devotion is even more so, since Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally bring more focus, depth, and warmth to their unmistakable sound... Like Beach House, Devotion sounds like it was made for, and possibly in, the dead of night. This time, though, Beach House's dark moods have more shades, and even a little bit of light, making them all the more compelling."

5ive
Hesperus
PS, US Boston's 5ive were a two-piece with no vocalist or bass player long before being instrumental and having an unorthodox band assemblage became "cool". They have a Kyuss style guitar tone without the bad vocals. Their debut full-length was one of Terrorizer magazine's top twenty of 2001. "Ben Carr's guitars are thickly layered without the sound becoming mushy. The distortion he gets out of his amp makes his riffing sound like balls of flame. Charlie Harrold's drumming complements the guitar playing exceptionally; these are two musicians that are well in tune with each other" - Brainwashed.com.

Accidental, The
Knock Knock (Tunng Mix) / Brave New World (Benge Mix)
PS, UK Fripp and Eno, Gainsbourg and Vannier, Kuti and Allen - two's company, and great musicians often travel in pairs. The Accidental is a pairing of Sam Genders (Tunng) and Stephen Cracknell (The Memory Band, Gorodisch, co-founder of Trunk Records). This single is their first outing as well as a forerunner for a debut full-length album, due in Spring 2008. As a founder member of Tunng, Sam Genders is an extraordinary songwriter, melding Lewis Carroll's flights of fancy with all the pathos of a 19th Century Russian novelist - a tragic-comic outlook on life and fascination with both the natural and unnatural, like Gogol with a guitar. With Tunng, his well-drawn tales weave in and out of the bobbing electronics, crafting electro-tinged folk songs which pulse and caress with equal measure, combining an easy melodicism with the band's expansive touch. Stephen Cracknell has a similarly attuned ear for the properties which link the acoustic and pastoral with the synthetic sounds of electronica, managing to conjure an organically simple fusion of elements which is defiantly modern. Under the moniker of the Memory Band, Cracknell's sleight of hand has seen him essay that relationship between the traditional folk lament and the circular, glitchy stylings heard on his electronic output as Gorodisch. This seven-inch release marks the first airing of material by the Accidental, featuring remixes of two of the songs slated for inclusion on their forthcoming debut album. Knock Knock is remixed by fellow Tunng lynchpin Mike Lindsay, the scratchy atmosphere and booming beats lending it a distinctly tribal feel, while bass frequencies lurch and stretch underneath plaintive vocals. On the reverse is the Benge remix of Brave New World - a slice of blissful electronica akin to Four Tet sitting down for tea and scones with Animal Collective, while snaking rhythms rattle alongside cut-up vocals and odd percussive flourishes. Slip on the headphones and drift away. Limited to 500 copies on seven inch wax only. Vinyl comes in a harvest house bag with print.

American Music Club
The Golden Age

Angel
Kalmukia
PS, US This is Ilpo Vaisanen (PAN SONIC), Hildur Gudnadottir (Lost In Hildurness) & Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM). A vast epic, sprawling through guitar riffs spanning deep electronic canyons overlooked by a melancholic grey sky. A journey leading to discovery & a final mutation. All players delicately playing off each other, creating a mesmerizing work that sounds like nothing they have done before yet still retaining the audio signatures they have become known for.

Apes, The
Ghost Games
PS, US POPMATTERS: "Forgoing lead guitar for shambling, sinister organ licks, DC post-punk outfit the Apes strike a strange middle-ground between minimalism and maximalism. Lacking guitar accompaniment, Jeff Schmid's drums and and Erick Jackson's bass tend operate in spare cages of plunging rhythms and blurting stabs, and when the keys afford them some space, the whole feels crisply open. However, just as often as organist Amanda Bynes allows herself to be constrained by the others' rhythms, she surges past and breaks free, letting her organ swell to fill every gap with psychedelic squeal."

Apples In Stereo
Discovery of a World Inside the Moone [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Apples In Stereo's third full-length album is a return to their early-'60s Beatlesque sound... Robert Schneider's lyrics are more emotional and personal here than on earlier releases, and the added intimacy, as well as the musical layers, make The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone an intricate, poignant lunar trip."

Apples In Stereo
Fun Trick Noisemaker [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "One of the defining albums of the mid-'90s indie scene, the Apples in Stereo's full-length debut is one of those records that marks a sea change in musical attitudes, akin to Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" or Pavement's early singles... The album that defines the post-grunge indie pop shift from sullen negativity into a kind of cockeyed, giddy optimism, and is also among the handful of albums that turned Brian Wilson, Arthur Lee, and Burt Bacharach into cool names to drop at the record store... Fun Trick Noisemaker is a minor masterpiece."

Also available on re-issue: Discovery of a World Inside the Moone (2000) and Her Wallpaper Reverie (1999)

Apples In Stereo
Her Wallpaper Reverie [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "the band's most overtly psychedelic record, it's also their most experimental, achieving a near-perfect balance between candy-colored popcraft and musique concrète-influenced interludes. In a sense, the disc is a response to the grand ambitions of fellow Elephant 6-ers Olivia Tremor Control and their likeminded Black Foliage album, but the Apples' integration of Beatlesque melodies and experimental noises is much more seamless; not only are Her Wallpaper Reverie's songs the best Robert Schneider's yet written, but they're produced with a new richness of detail -- from the wonderfully Lennon-esque "Strawberryfire" to the Kinks-ish "Ruby," the music positively shimmers."

Architect
I Went Out Shopping To Get Some Noise
PS, GERMANY Reissue. Ever prolific, Haujobb's Daniel Myer returns for a second album as architect, I went out shopping to get some noise. Myer's previous architect album, 1998's galactic supermarket, leant toward the darker threads of technoid drum'n'bass (panacea, tarmvred, etc). For I went out shopping to get some noise, Myer reigns in the breaks to toss down thirteen mind-bendingly tight electro-acid-industrial-techno cuts, each bearing Myer's signature dark flair and impeccable production. Comparisons range from afx and caustic window on 'track 7' to emotive digital synthpop like early attaché on 'track 5.' not to be outdone by other sample-aholics, Myer ensnares the ultimate - Beethoven's moonlight sonata - and contorts it into a neoromantic opus on 'track 6.' if this is what Myer means by noise, the rest of the musical world has a lot of catching up to do to touch architect.

Atlas Sound
Let the Blind Lead Those
PS, US One of the latest "true queer art punks" to emerge from the cracked pavement of southern suburban sprawl, this is the solo moniker of DEERHUNTER frontman/provocateur BRADFORD COX. This is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock & ambient electronic influences previously explored w/ Deerhunter in a new context, w/ newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop-based, learned w/ guidance from kranky artist Nudge's Brian Foote. The result is 14 Songs of melancholy & mania.

Rivers Arms
PS, US Mirroring the vast Texas skies, the soulful collection of songs on "Rivers Arms" is imbued with a visceral weight and endless space. BALMORHEA'S shows have included dates with The Drift, Bexar Bexar, One AM Radio, Caspian, and more. They're currently planning a Spring tour to coincide with this release and working on a Summer tour with their Italian friends Port-Royal. The track "Baleen Morning" will be featured on an upcoming documentary about the company "Toms Shoes", which will premier the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

Bao, Billy
Dialectics of Shit
PS, US This screams freedom; freedom from presumptions, form, & safety. Its 10 tracks bludgeon wantonly w/ black metallic ferox, industrial rhythm jackhammering, & a gauntlet of free-swinging riffs designed to mash ears into the asphalt. The directions hinted at in his earlier works are given new purpose, let loose to manipulate any expectations brought in w/ the listener. Like the nihilistic pummel of the Brainbombs, the feral howl of early Nirvana, & the aluminum baseball bat dunt of New Zealand post-punkers The Gordons

Beat Circus
Dreamland
PS, US This second full length album is a uniquely fierce and magical record composed by singer/songwriter Brian Carpenter, who delivers dark narrative songs of Deadwood saloons, gangsters from The Bowery, Coney Island sideshows, and the Santa Fe Railway. Loosely based on historical events associated with turn of the century New York, Dreamland is the culmination of a two-year effort by Beat Circus and marks the first installment of Brian Carpenter's Weird American Gothictrilogy. Brian leads a 9-piece band with a unique & exciting instrumentation: pump organ, trumpet, violin, viola, cello, accordion, jawharp, tuba, trombone, banjo, mandolin, saxophones drums and percussion. Dreamland was engineered and produced by legendary NY producer Martin Bisi (SONIC YOUTH, FOETUS, DRESDEN DOLLS, BARBEZ).

Beequeen
Sandancing
PS, US After the by now usual gap of some two years, Beequeen is ready to present their latest album, further maturing their sound from 'The Bodyshop' (also on Important Records). More song based, this album features new vocals by Olga Wallis solely (with some backing by Freek Kinkelaar). Well-rounded popsongs in some places, but Beequeen never forgets to put in some strange element, without leaping in the dark alley of pointless experiment. Orchestral in 'The Illogical Song', collage like in 'The Edie Three Step' or a simple rhythm machine in 'The Honeythief'. Beequeen does all, and with great care and seemingly ease. This album features also the help of Barry Gray, former (and first) guitarist of The Legendary Pink Dots, and would not have been the album that is without the invaluable production skills of Erik Drost.

Belong
Colorloss Record
PS, US While BELONG still considers these cover songs, what we are presented with are shells, the ghosts of what we think we know about such a fleeting medium as music in the first place. And like the title implies, the music sounds weathered, a faded version of some original we might only imagine. As a record of covers, it sounds like the sonic palimpsest that it is exactly. On "Colorloss", one finds a humble treatment of the hierarchy of sounds. It is the equal attention given to each sound and its place in the mix that makes this a true musical democracy where each element shines in its own way, while propping up the others in a puzzle that would charm Archimedes. A wash of fuzz finds itself meandering thru a track holding hands with the vocals, the space between a breathe before the next submergence. What we have as a result is work of such staggering beauty and melodic thoughtfulness to stop KEVIN SHIELDS in his tracks at the wonder of it. And while the instrumentation and means might be different, this is a music that has as much in common with late 20th-century composition in the vein of JOHN CALE or TONY CONRAD as it does with the soundscapes of WILLIAM BASINSKI or MY BLOODY VALENTINE.

Bitcrush
Epilogue in Waves
PS, US '"Epilogue in Waves" is the third album from n5MD main-man Mike Cadoo's ever evolving Bitcrush moniker. The album is the soundtrack to a story which begins with a sense of hope, but whose undercurrents pull you to the end you feared. Epilogue in Waves marks the end of Cadoo's "wading in the ocean" thematic metaphor for lost time that constituted the backbone of his previous album, "In Distance." As his self-described "rock record," the album eschews some of Cadoo's previous electronic methodologies for a more stripped-down songwriting style which utilizes only guitars, basses and drums. This experiment in the basics has led to a sonically rich release that still contains those warm musical crevices to find solace in. Epilogue in Waves will please fans of previous works by Bitcrush as well as neophytes to Cadoo's brand of emotional and sometimes epic songwriting.

Bon Iver
For Emma, Forever Ago
PS, US This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.

Boy Omega
Hope On The Horizon
PS, SPAIN On "Hope on the Horizon", Boy Omega (Swedish genius Martin Henrik Gustafsson) follows up his critically acclaimed 2006-albums "The Black Tango" and "The Grey Rainbow", with yet another impressive collection of songs that showcase the growth of his songwriting. As always when you hear a new Boy Omega-record, there's something new going on. This time it's a lot less electronic than before. This is something warm and analog, featuring big walls of strings, horns, acoustic pianos etc. It sounds melancholic and drenched with the bitter beauty of life. Besides from recording "Hope...", releasing two albums, a tour-cd (feat. 15 rare tracks and covers), two singles, the split CD "If we were oceans" and appearing on the Magnetic Fields tribute CD "Our love is meaningless", Boy Omega also managed to play more than 60 shows in 2006. Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and the UK were frequently visited. In the summer they played the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, The End of the road festival in the UK along with artists such as Ryan Adams, Ed Harcourt and Badly Drawn Boy. They also did shows together with Isobel Campbell, Akron/Family, The Hidden Cameras and Jason Collett. "Fans of Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith will feel a kinship to these allusive tunes ... A fascinating series of snapshots, both disarming and engaging ... something incredibly fragile and perfectly crafted." - UNCUT "Sad songs and little-boy-lost vocals recall Bright Eyes, but his settings are all his own, mixing lo-fi sensibilities with gnarly electronics, warm cellos, lustrous violins, banjo and sax to lush effect ... One to watch." - THE INDEPENDENT "Naked and bare but still powerful, and not self-pitiful as so many others in the same genre." - GROOVE

These seven songs are solid all the way through, and are sure to break hearts! Club 8
Club 8 + 2
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. Labrador is proud to present the second of four CD album re-issues by Sweden's melancholic pop heroes. Club 8s self-titled third is released with original artwork and two (2) bonus tracks. It took three years from the previous album "The friend I once had" to the release of "Club 8" and listening to the albums after one and another it's obvious how much they'd changed in absence. This album definitely moved the band in a new direction. And you can tell directly from the first song on "Club 8". "Love in december" is breathtaking, soulful pop imbued by dark Scandinavian winter atmosphere and bittersweet melancholy. "If a lover's arms were as soft and sultry as the music on Club 8, returning to them again and again would pose little conflict, and the same goes for slipping into Club 8." ROLLING STONE

Club 8
Spring Came, Rain Fell + 5
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. Labrador is proud to announce the third of four CD album re-issues by Sweden's kings & queens of happysad indie pop. Club 8s third album "Spring came, rain fell" is released with original artwork and five (5) bonus tracks. "Spring came, rain fell" was the start of a whole new era for Club 8. They had just bought their own recording equipment and started the now famous Summersound Studio together with fellow band Acid House Kings and from this a whole new level of creativity emerged. You can tell Club 8 enjoyed their newly found freedom with a studio of thier own. "Spring came, rain fell" is sparkling of experimental lust. Without ever losing their touch for seductive pop melodies Club 8 here produces songs and sounds ranging from dub and electronica to smokey trip hop and folky and acoustic pop. They did everything just because they could do it and because they loved doing. "Club 8 use the studio to bring the best out in every song ... shafts of melodica shine a light through Komstedt's dewy fatalism. It may be bleak, but you can't stop returning." - MOJO "As summer slips away, wallow in some Scandinavian sadness with this Swedish duo's wonderfully soothing (UK) début." - TIME OUT (London)

Club 8
The Friend I Once Had + 6
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. With a glittery mix of jangly guitars, bossa nova and sophisticated, melancholic pop melodies, "The Friend I Once Had" was a big step forwards for Club 8. Their debut album "Nouvelle" may be regarded, as a twee pop classic by some but the band would happily rather bury most the songs under a rock. This is the album they wish was their debut. "All bubble-pop, break beats, and xylophones, Friend I Once Had was a step forward from the fey gestures Club 8 had once been known for." ALL MUSIC GUIDE "...showcases lusher, bouncier songs suitable for both easy listening and sophisticated grooving .... music that you will immediately cherish..." CMJ "It is absolutely essential to own at least one Lp by this group. I'd probably suggest this one as the place to start, but you really can't go wrong." 10 + INDIESPINZONE "The friend I once had" was not only a first step towards the band's characteristically elegant, yet melancholic, "Club 8 - sound"; it was a step towards a much bigger (and possibly wider) audience. The album gained critical success and reached thousands of new listeners in the US, Europe and Japan and they even had a minor hit with the single "Missing you". Ironically, this is the only song from the album parts of the band can no longer stand. "The Friend I Once Had" celebrates 10 years and remains a minor Swedish pop classic. A must have for just about anyone genuinely interested in quality POP.

Club 8
Strangely Beautiful + 5
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. Labrador is proud to present the fourth of four CD album re-issues by one of Sweden's most influential indie pop bands. Club 8s fifth album "Strangely beautiful" is released with original artwork and nothing less than five (5) bonus tracks. "Strangely beautiful" was the last of three albums in Club 8's productive peak between 2001 and 2003. Within a time frame of less than two years the band managed to release three full-length albums and two Eps without ever losing on quality. Quite the opposite, "Strangely beautiful" was by many considered their best album to date. "Strangely Beautiful is Club 8's best and most varied record to date...on this album, the band's trademark blend of soft indie pop guitars, perky dance beats, melancholy synthesizers, and sweet and innocent vocals remains intact, but Johan Angergard, the chief architect of Club 8's sound, seems to have spent some effort trying to expand their sound a little. The work pays off handsomely and the album sounds full of life and energy." ALL MUSIC Their previous album "Spring came, rain fell" had been a very diverse history ranging from electronica and dub to acoustic pop. Therefor it came natural for Club 8 to move in the opposite direction on their next album and make a more homogeneous album. "Strangely beautiful" mostly revolved around guitar based and melancholic pop music. But there was, as always, tracks that stood out as completely different from the rest. And in typical Club 8 manner this track, "Saturday night engine", was chosen to be the single. This noisy and Northern Soul-inspired track was a clear forerunner to The Legends "Up against the Legends". But that's another story.

Coltrane, John
Turning Point
PS, UK Over the all too brief 40 years of his life, John Coltrane had a profound and far-reaching effect on the world of jazz and beyond. Yet acclaimed as he already was after spells as a sideman with giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, it was only in 1957 that his musical vision began to truly find focus. The "spiritual awakening" of which he spoke prompted him to make wholesale changes in his lifestyle. Out, went the bad habits that had made many fears for his life, to be replaced by an all-consuming quest to make music that transcended national and cultural boundaries, bringing both player and listener to a state of connectedness with God. This edition illustrates that landmark year with selections from four important sessions; collaborations and first dates as leader with Tadd Dameron, Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan and Red Garland. The listener will find abundant evidence of one of jazz's undisputed greats demonstrating total mastery of the music that succored him through his early years - blues, swing, bebop - and already beginning to hunger for fresh challenges. Coltrane's eclectic attitudes, encouraged by his friendship with Ravi Shankar, would soon inspire The Byrds ('Eight Miles High'), Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Tom Verlaine, The Stooges. Mating Call / Soultrane / On A Misty Night / Eclypso / Solacium / Bakai / While My Lady Sleeps / Chronic Blues / You Leave Me Breathless / Soft Lights And Sweet Music / Slow Dance.

Company
Old Baby
PS, US "Old Baby" is the latest record from COMPANY, a songwriting collective and rock band rooted in folk, punk, country, and psychedelic traditions. Evocative guitars, dynamic rhythms, uplifting harmonies, and lyrics by turns incisive and insightful interweave to create a homespun sound that is as striking as it is familiar. In these songs, simplicity shimmers, dreams pack the punch of hard facts, and the human heart is laid bare, weird, defiant, and lovely.

Contents Are, The
Through You
PS, GERMANY The Contents Are: Dave Neumann (guitar, vocals); Paul Staack (drums, vocals); Larry Smith (bass, vocals); and Craig Hute (lead guitar, vocals) from Iowa. The Contents Are were one of many '60s bands from the Quad City's fertile garage music scene. With labels/studios like Fredlo and IGL, it was a very healthy regional area for bands with an unusually high per capita for record releases. Up until the recent discovery of an original copy a couple years ago, it was only rumored to exist and remained an enigma with hardcore record collectors. In most cases, The Contents Are were only known by astute collectors for their two excellent 45 releases (non-LP). Well the mystery is over, and here's your chance to hear one of the most rare and greatest garage records ever recorded. Here's the story about the record: four high school seniors from Iowa decide to release an album of all original tunes, exclusively sold at their live shows. Originally released on the Rok label (a subsidiary of the already obscure Fredlo label) in 1967 with only 100 copies pressed. These guys were not your typical garage band - talented players, professional grade vocalists and no cover songs! Their music is a nice blend of garage rock with hints of hipster folk and early psychedelic influences. As good if not better as other similar top-shelf rarities like Mystery Meat and the Bachs, but without a major quantity release, making original copies of their recordings ten times rarer. Get it or miss it! CD jewel case with 8-page booklet, plus 4 bonus non-LP tracks from singles.

Dig That Treasure
PS, US Every song on "Dig That Treasure" is a miniature journey, a free fantasia, a dreamy habitat built out of the minimum of material. Sudden rhythmic gestures and frequent key changes will leave you feeling pleasantly disorientated in a song. But trust your tour-guides! You might feel as if you've come across a small tribe that speaks an unstudied language, and miraculously, find that you can speak it too! "Dig That Treasure" is humbly inspired by the larger-than-life emotions of West Side Story, the joyfully percussive guitar gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Wizard of Oz's bittersweet escapism, the other-world sentimentality of Sun Ra's Spaceship Lullaby, and Henry Cowell's ethereal piano string strumming.

Dead Science
Tomlab Alphabet Series: V
PS, US The "V" single, and the two songs contained therein, will be a sort of satellite of THE DEAD SCIENCE'S next album, "Villainaire", a record dealing with a very specific period of time in singer Sam Mickens' life and, more generally, in the embrace of personal nihilism and the potential psychic luxury of amorality. The A-Side, "Make Mine Marvel (Remix)" will be, in the style of R. Kelly's remix work, a completely new song, with completely new melodic and lyrical content, built on components of the original "make Mine Marvel" which will appear on "Villainaire". The B-Side, "White Mane," was a song initially intended and recorded for the album, but which will be exclusively here instead. "White Mane" is, in fragmentary and impressionistic fashion, about the American film actor Robert Blake, both in his own recent life and in terms of his relationship to certain past roles.

Diamond, Neil
Velvet Gloves and Spit
PS, UK Somewhere between his stint as a successful Brill Building songwriter (his songs 'I'm A Believer' and 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You' became mega-hits for The Monkees) cum-fledgling solo artist (scoring US hits with 'Solitary Man', 'Kentucky Woman' and 'Cherry, Cherry') and his world-conquering 1970s solo career, Brooklyn-born Neil Diamond released a string of inauspicious, low-selling albums in something more akin to a singer-songwriter/troubadour style. Velvet Gloves And Spit, recorded in New York before Diamond had perfected the Memphis-helmed sound of his subsequent hits, was his first for new label Uni and appeared in 1968 to little acclaim. However, following the single success of 'Shilo' in 1970, the song was tacked onto the album and it was reissued in a new sleeve. Stylistically, the album covers the whole spectrum of contemporary sounds from romantic ballads to tongue-in-cheek social commentary to brash pop gems not unlike his mid-'60s Brill Building output. TRACKS: Two-Bit Manchild, A Modern Day Version Of Love, Honey- Drippin' Times, Pot Smoker's Song, Brooklyn Roads, Shilo (Re-Recording), Sunday Sun, Holiday Inn Blues, Practically Newborn, Knackelflerg, Merry-Go-Round.

DJ Donna Summer
Panther Tracks
PS, UK He's back! It's been 2 years since Jason Forrest released his last full-length album, and 5 years since he's released as Donna Summer. So now he's back, this time with the slightly different moniker (DJ Donna Summer) and his first release for his own Cock Rock Disco label. Just as "Shamelessly Exciting" was a record that mixed different genres into a new mash of sampled sounds, "Panther Tracks" is a record comprised of different styles of dance music made solely with the intention to get people moving! From Booty to Breakcore, Happy Hardcore to Hardstyle, Techno to B'more Club Music, Forrest has it in there! Initially begun as a sort of remix record, "Panther Tracks" builds heavily on a variety of sampled heroes. One can hear Dj Chip and Dj Technics form the skeleton of more booty oriented tracks like "Peepers" and "Boomshakalaka". While some live recordings (on cassette) of old-school Uk Breakbeat Rave festivals by DJ Slipmat, Ratpack, and Ellis D are reconstructed to make new Breakcore styled dance tracks. Traces of Hardstyle, Techno and a whole lot of Breakcore yield such gems as "Party People", "Get Down" and "Rock Rock Rock". No style too hard or too cheesy to learn from, "Panther Tracks" is like the ultimate Rave; it's fun, slightly crazy, and will keep you dancing all night long.

Dot Tape Dot
Tomavistas: (Selected Rarities 2002-2007)
PS, US Daniel Romero is a multi-faceted musician based in Asturias, north of Spain. In a very short time he has molded a very personal discourse based on constructing low-budget electronic pop with lo-fi, toy instruments, combined with stunning homemade visuals. "Tomavistas" is something like an old video camera - literally taking in and recording the landscapes of contemplative, visual sound. It is a collection of Daniel Romero's rarities and personal favorites recorded as dot tape dot, spanning the years 2002 - 2007. "Tomavistas" is born of love of the domestic flavor of the "underground" and the pleasure derived spending time making music for this scene. Considering the difficulty for listeners to find these tracks, it became time to compile them along with other, little known pieces and clears out space for a new personal stockpile to be built. These 12 tracks are taken from limited edition compilations, vinyl only releases and "unofficial" albums, from labels in France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico, UK and Canada. This collection is intended to serve as a retrospective for fans, highlighting different musical stages, or a perfect introduction for new listeners, revealing a background upon which to consider future output. 1. Dreamers, The
Day For Night
PS, SWEDEN The Dreamers are an Anglo/Swedish duo featuring Sarah Nyberg Pergament (Action Biker) and Kevin Wright (Always and Mr. Wright, on él, Le Grand Magistery and Siesta). After meeting at a Swedish music festival in 2004, the pair began making music together via London, Stockholm and Helsinki, and fusing jazz pop, bossanova, and soundtrack music. With "Day for Night" the Dreamers have made--to paraphrase Michel Legrand on Tom Jobim- the sad music that makes the world a better place. Influences: Stan Tracey, Caetano Veloso, Colleen, Francoise Hardy, Kryzystof Komeda, Matching Mole, Anna Karina, Bill Evans, Monica Zetterlund, Nara Leao, Bernard Herrmann, Nico... "[A] male/female duo with the vocal texture and cadence of Broadcast's Trish Keenan, but with its own musicality, personality and atmosphere set in a breeze-blown, sun-drenched pasture, the record is really charming and full of self-assured confidence - light on its feet in that Brazilian way and positive in that modern indie way, but solid and thoughtfully written. The Dreamers are very easy to like but definitely not just another guilty pleasure." - Other Music, NYC

East Of Eden
Mercator Projected
PS, UK A milestone in the birth of "progressive" rock, East of Eden's debut album, "Mercator Projected" has been cited by Mojo magazine as a minor masterpiece. Released on the legendary Deram label in 1969, the album established East of Eden as a major act, particularly in France, where the band had several Top Ten singles and major album success. An imaginative fusion of jazz, psychedelia and world music, "Mercator Projected" has been remastered from the original master tapes and features twenty minutes of bonus material, including previously unreleased extended demo versions of 'Waterways' and 'In The Stable of the Sphynx' and East of Eden's take on The Byrds' classic 'Eight Miles High'. East Of Eden
Snafu
PS, UK East of Eden's second album, "Snafu" was originally released in 1970 by Deram Records and saw the band take their particular fusion of jazz, psychedelia, world music and even blue beat, one step further. As ever, the instrumental prowess of Dave Arbus on violin dominated the music, leading eventually to Arbus playing the infamous violin solo on "Baba O'Reilly" by The Who. "Snafu" was the result of many months in the studio, before being shelved in favor of starting work on a fresh project. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been remastered from the original master tapes and features many unreleased bonus tracks, including five previously unreleased tracks from the aborted album sessions and alternate demo and single versions of their 1971 hit, "Jig-A-Jig". An extensive essay features interviews and previously unseen photographs.

Egg
The Polite Force
PS, UK This now legendary debut album by Egg featured the talents of Dave Stewart on Keyboards, Mont Campbell on Bass and Clive Brooks on Drums. Egg was associated with the so-called "Canterbury" style of rock music pioneered by artists such as Caravan and Soft Machine. The trio produced music of startling originality and energy, drawing on influences ranging from rock to jazz to psychedelia to classical. This fusion resulted in some of the most enduring releases to appear on Decca's Deram and Nova imprints and are now critically regarded as some of the more unique albums of the early 1970's. Egg's classic second album is re-mastered from the original tapes and appears alongside the reissue of "Egg". Enduser
Left
PS, US END.USER is one of the cornerstones of the modern eclectic electronic music. Support from BBC Radio's Mary Anne Hobbs and a list of DJs too long to fit on a one sheet, from many different genres, and releases across many platforms have built him into a juggernaut. A usually prolific artist, having recorded for Hymen, Ad Noiseam, Sublight, Cargo, and many others, he took 2007 off, working on something very special - his debut album on Ohm Resistance. Having relocated to San Francisco, a new lease on his creative power is demonstrated adroitly over the entire album. Album: left shows the most range of END.USER's album making career. Intensely personal, intensely musical, and just plain INTENSE at points, the album showcases a spectacular array of skills across the board. From radio play material ("black light") with Aussie vocalist Sol Thomas, to collaborations with and remixes by influential electronic acts SCORN and COUNTERSTRIKE, to absolutely stunning, no boundaries drum n bass, the album is diverse and full of powerful compositions. Compelling from start to finish, left is the culmination of more than a year's work. Label: Ohm Resistance is Brooklyn's premier experimental electronic label. Loaded with power, from Scorn, to Bill Laswell's Method of Defiance, to Enduser and Submerged, the label has transformed from drum n bass 12" powerhouse to cutting edge electronic project pioneer.

English, Lawrence/Ai Yamamoto
Plateau
PS, US Over the past three years Ai Yamamoto and Lawrence English have been exploring the ideas and linkages between field recordings, texture and minimal electronics. Occasionally crossing paths around Australia and sharing the odd live performance together, the duo realized they shared a strong interest in the character of sound and the creation of sonic works that carry a strong sense of suggested narrative and memory (both invented and real). On Plateau, they create evocative and generously textured passages of sound that mask gentle field recordings collected across the globe including Yamamoto's home prefecture of Nara, Japan where English also spent time. Considered In worldwide as the "Bible" of modern, cutting edge and new music and in publication now for over 20 years is the U.K. monthly magazine, The Wire, here is what they had to say upon review of "Plateau" in the February 2006 edition: A man of many collaborations, Lawrence English joins fellow Australian sound artist Ai Yamamoto for Plateau, a somber album of impressionist fragments connected more by mood and ambience than by movement and composition. As in his previous work with Tujiko Noriko DJ Olive and Philip Samartzis, English applies a considerable amount of DSP-distilled polish to the ensuing sounds, whether they are textured field recordings, rasping tam-tams or post-Eno dronescapes. Considering that Plateau jumps from tonefloat shimmer to wintry Durutti Column guitar flourishes to a music box palindrome and back to a bout of ominous minimalism, English's production serves to encase the entire album with a consistent aura. Plateau's numerous stylistic transitions and melodic interludes never veer far from a compelling if fragile melancholy.

Exillon
It's Ok To Dance
PS, GERMANY Exillon brings acid to IDM, speeds things up several notch, and bombs the dance floor with a high energy album of catchy twisted club tunes. Tapping on his high production skills, "It's OK to Dance" brings back life to twisted beats and complex rhythms and does it all with a smile. It's OK to take the acid test, and certainly impossible to resist. In 2006, Exillon had helped bear the grief of IDM with "The Keening Dithers", an album which brilliantly closed chapters both for this musician and for the kind of music he had been known for. Two years later, the keening has dithered for good, and Jay Fields (Exillon) has taken his art from the moody, glitchy and modest waters of his past electronica to more daring, club-oriented and uplifting ones. It might have to do with Jay Field's relocation to San Francisco, with a more energetic, dance floor-friendly trend in electronic music or just with the evolution of an artist per se; "It's OK To Dance" is a CD in which the clear, sharp and flowing sounds that Exillon has been using since his Debut in the early 200os get mixed and mashed in a lively, bouncy way. A party album for raving robots, this album is the meeting point of Exillon's hi-fi sounds and production and a deliciously retro, 90's acid sensibility. Not satisfied with just reviving the acid sound (something which has been done by many, without much soul or innovation), Exillon makes this sound his, and draws from his experience as a beat & tone trickster to bake a whole new recipe altogether. Mixing the best of both worlds, Jay Fields reclaims the dance floor, and manages to entertain his audience without insulting the brain (something which over the year has almost become an Ad Noiseam motto). Good trip guaranteed and yes, it is really OK to dance.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant <a href="http://www.parasol.com/catalog/catalog.asp?zoomtitle=75849">'Radiola'</a>. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. The bonus, on top of it all, twist to the album is that it is mastered by the legendary Mr Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub!

The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" -Gustaf Kjellvander

WIRELESS BOLLINGER REVIEW: "But the hook that makes this album fun isn't just the fact that most of the tales told in each song are full of girly sweetness. Rather it's the Fine Arts Showcase sound itself - and in particular, Kjellvander's sensationally produced voice, mixing with the aforementioned feminie splendour of Rough Bunnies' original words, that make it work so well. Instead of coming across as simply a cute, slightly cheeky female pop record, what we've got here is an album by a man who's lovingly singing through diary entries, discovering her fascinations, disappointments, sexuality, crushes - the works. This grown male's perspective on adolescent female territory delivers a fresh-sounding positive romanticism to Sings Rough Bunnies; and it's bloody infectious."

Goodnight Stars, Goodnight Moon
PS, SWEDEN Fireflies is Lisle Mitnik. He grew up in the tundras of New England playing classical piano and one day he moved to California to go to school and decided to start writing songs. Headlights
Some Racing, Some Stopping
PS, US To fully understand what went into Some Racing, Some Stopping, one must first understand what led up to it. Since Headlights' formation in 2004, the band has toured virtually nonstop, playing over 300 shows in the past two and a half years in support of both its debut The Enemies EP and its stunning 2006 full-length Kill Them With Kindness. Based around Tristan Wraight's acoustic guitar and Erin Fein's keyboards, the songs on Some Racing, Some Stopping purposefully lack much of the spacey atmospherics that define the band's earlier work. Instead the album is steeped in a classic pop sensibility, reminiscent of the '60s, Brill Building song craft, and Phil Spector production. Songs like the chiming, harmonic "Catch Them All," the light and airy "Cherry Tulips," the solemn "January," and the driving, string-touched "Market Girl" are evidence of an album that is more focused than any of the band's past work. Original artwork by Parasol Pal Elzie Sexton (New Ruins).

Higgs, Daniel
Plays the Mirror of the Apocalypse and Other Songs
PS, US CD version of a previously released limited cassette. Lengthy droning ragas, that drift hypnotically from deconstructed Appalachia to John Cale like slow-shifting skree (joined on those tracks by violin), to moody melancholy crawls, to thick serpentine swirls of snake charmer melody & reverberating steel string shimmer. Raw & lo-fi for sure, but so darkly emotional, & dreamily hypnotic.

Instant Orange
S-T
PS, GERMANY Besides home to the Hell's Angels, farmers and citrus grooves, San Bernardino, California was also where Instant Orange lived and released their first single in 1968. Terry Walters, Randy Lanier and Lynn McCurdy are Instant Orange with the help of Joe Bianchi and Bob Lautz. The band forged ahead and released another single (1973), album (1973) and two 10" EPs (1974 and 1975). All of their releases were small pressings of 100 copies and to this day, Instant Orange remains virtually unknown. Their homemade sound is a refreshing reflection of the West Coast folk-rock influences that were so prevalent during the '60s and early '70s. All original tracks with inspiration from bands like The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Love, Sandy Bull and others. Songs full of electric and acoustic guitars with nice doses of McGuinnesque 12-string riffing as well as many unexpected surprises (antiquated electronic effects, rambling rural explorations, long jams, experimental moves, stoner banter and other weirdness between songs, caveman fuzz, etc.). A solid listen with enough original imagination to keep it interesting without the band creating an identity crisis by trying too hard to be something other than themselves. Grab this before it becomes elusive like some of San Bernardino's motorcycle riding inhabitants.

Lowe, Nick
Jesus of Cool [Bonus Tracks] (Digipack Packaging)
PS, US Reissue of his classic first solo record. Pop record making at it's finest. A must own!! 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of Nick Lowe's seminal 1978 album Jesus of Cool. The album, released in the U.S. as Pure Pop for Now People, marks the beginning of one of the most storied and influential solo careers in pop music and marks the true emergence of a songwriting monolith. The album is a literal compendium of 25 years of pop music history. Here, the sweet melodies of pre-Beatles pop, the energy of the British Invasion, the excess of glam and elements of ska and new wave don t blend but stand side by side on the field of battle, each one willing to lay down his life for the other. Jesus is the crossroads where pop music and pop culture collide, self-aware for the first time, fusing into a white hot chunk of rock n roll energy. Here, on this 30th anniversary edition of the album, the original and U.S. versions of the album are combined to include all material ever available on either release. In addition, seven bonus cuts are included making this the definitive version of this undisputed pop masterpiece.

Mancini, Henry
Touch Of Evil OST
PS, UK "Touch of Evil" is a masterpiece of 20th century cinema: Director Orson Welles' final Hollywood film and regarded as the last great film noir. Stars Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich and Welles himself as the crooked police chief Hank Quinlan, who always gets his man even if he has to concoct the evidence to do so! The searing semi-latin rock & roll score is considered (both by critics and the composer) to be one of Henry Mancini's finest. Barney Kessel, who featured on "Pet Sounds" and many of the Phil Spector and Monkeys' hits, plays guitar. Timeless and landmark cinema; the personification of cool.

Whether it's the psychedelic reminiscing sing-along "Do The Disaster" or the winding, prog-tinged anthem "Lavender Shell" the band's confidence to mine from the past is clear, but all with a fresh outlook for the future. First single "Boots" rides Aaron Brink's atmospheric guitar hooks & the thunderous, double-time drumming of Mike Brunette all the way through the assured singing of Amelia Styer, who shares vocals throughout Kaleidoscope with Maxwell & Reidell.

Megafaun
Bury the Square
PS, US From the vibrant Southern quasi-capital of Durham emerge MEGAFAUN, wearing earnestness across the chest and abstraction along the sleeves. They pour forth dulcet harmonies, as seeking vocals tug banjo lines up the Appalachian mountains; redemptive noise soaks everything, like thick air wafting from the Atlantic. Clawhammer banjo and strummed acoustics lock and roll with electric guitars and electronic textures. They realize that folk implies deep, personal, intense expression, whether the instrument is a parlor piano with the lid thrown back or a distortion pedal with the case cracked loose. In this band, orthodoxy and unorthodoxy flow together as one.

Menche, Daniel
Glass Forest
PS, US Glass Forest is a highly listenable starting point for any newcomers curious about Daniel Menche's vast discography. It is also, according to Menche, the last cd he will release. From now on he'll be releasing his music on LP only or on DVD to accompany films he's been working on. Glass Forest is also the companion release to Body Melt which is being released simultaneously on Important on LP only. Recorded in the winter of 2005, Daniel Menches Glass Forest displays a glistening sound world that finely textured with the most delicate of raw organic sound and chaotic electronic noise. Not at all extreme as with Menches previous work but rather a more subtle presence can be heard here on Glass Forest. Subsonic bass drums crawling underneath a massive sheets of glass-like sound layering infinitely into a thick and dense forest of delicate noise. For fans of Daniel Menche's ambient work and also his loud violent work, Glass Forest fits exactly right in the middle of these two polarities.

Call it trance music for carnivores or ambient music for cannibals. Body Melt sits perfectly thronged on this limited vinyl LP release.

I Can Hear Your Heart
PS, UK New solo album from Arab Strap frontman, warning: explicit content! AVERSION: "t should come as no surprise that the onetime Arab Strap singer's first solo album, a spoken-word poetry/prose affair that's usually accompanied by incidental music or other sound effects, is laden in tales of cheating lovers, sexual experimentation and soaked in booze. Here, Darnielle has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and downright catchy songs of his career. "It's rare to come across such specific and purposeful prose in modern pop. But, alongside Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, John Darnielle is helping bring fine lyric writing back to life" - NY Daily News.

Neptune
Gong Lake
PS, US Behold: NEPTUNE, the most harrowingly original band on this planet - or the next. Its three members are, in turn, musicians, sculptors, scientists, blacksmiths, electricians, and industrial machinists; relentlessly inventive, possibly sane. Together, they construct all of their instruments, forging guitars and drums out of circular saw blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings, and miscellany from the trash. Electronics, and even cords, are homemade as well. The combined effect is a bizarre, post-apocalyptic mélange of steel, iron, wire, rust, rivet, knob, and cable; it's lunacy, arc-welded for maximum destruction. Concerts are seizures of motion. Wearing 40-pound guitars assembled entirely from scrap metal, the members don't play their instruments - they battle them, like mechanized golems. But make no mistake, this is not simply art with sharp edges and serious customs issues. Neptune rocks. Hard. Recalling the slapdash angularity of The Fall, the rhythmic ack-ack blasts of This Heat, and the sheer proto-clangor of Einstuerzende Neubauten, they count as one of the best experimental rock bands of any era. Their dynamic, expertly wrought songs and skilled improvisations don't start; they explode. "Gong Lake" is the band's first unlimited CD release, and with it the world will discover what fans of their live shows have known for years: Neptune is otherworldly.

Golden era Hollywood musicals, Jam & Lewis-inspired production techniques, the icy displacement of contemporary R'n'B, and the breadth of Arthur Russell's, disco, pop, and avant garde compositional work are referenced and married together by novelistic narrative strains, a lush instrumental palette, and a cinematic atmosphere.

Notorious Hi-Fi Killers
Which Side Are You On?
PS, UK Rocket Recordings are proud to announce the release of Which Side Are You On?, the debut album by Southeast London 3-piece The Notorious Hi-Fi Killers. Which Side Are You On? presents the trio's distinctive take on loud, throttling noise rock blended with manic psychedelia, taking the listener on a journey through ferocious 4-track blasts, analog tape space rock and intuitive heavy blues. This is the sound of a primal rock and roll band at their most uncompromising and dirtiest. From the one and a half minute biker-punk anthem of 'Queen O' Fuck' through the fuzzed-up blues of the Freddie King classic 'Going Down' to the 18 minutes of psychedelic bliss of 'Near The Final Destination' which crumbles into a mantra of noise, drones and horns, with the added assistance of Alexander Tucker, Duke Garwood and members of Part Chimp. The Notorious Hi-Fi Killers have been a common sight on the stages in their hometown of London and various dimly-lit warehouses across the country, playing alongside bands like The Heads, Lords, Parts and Labour, Shit & Shine and White Hills.

The composition runs a total of 8 hrs & 35 min. Le Génie Humain
PS, FRANCE A feast of an album from Jérôme Didelot aka Orwell. Pop par excellence, "Le génie humain" is packed with orchestral maneuvers, soaring synths, and silky, buzzy goodness that bring Eggstone, Louis Philippe and the space bossa moments of Testbild! to mind. With influences running from the early 60s through the early 80s, Jerome's songs have a folk-like delicacy, but sail on intricate arrangements featuring strings, voices, woodwinds and keyboards galore. "Le genie humain" features collaborations with Médéric Gontier (Tahiti 80), Alexander von Mehren, JP Nataf, Ruth Minnikin (Heavy Blinkers), Miss Aprilia Sari (White Shoes and the Couples Company) and Julien Lonchamp (Jack and the'), among others. Our Sleepless Forest
S-T
PS, UK Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space rock from a frighteningly young three-piece from South London - their first full release, having had an early version of album track 'The Tinderbox' included on the Type Records 'Free The Future' compilation. Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara started experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds using software and basic recording equipment, inspired by the music they were into and with the aim of creating their own wall of sound. After 14 months they emerged with something they were sufficiently happy with to allow it to be heard by others, and ultimately that brings us to the present day - an eight-track, 45-minute debut. Our Sleepless Forest's music is multi-layered, complex and
