PS, GERMANY 17 Pictures is a project by Jörg Follert, who has already released critically acclaimed under the pseudonyms Wechsel Garland and Wunder for labels like Morr or Karaoke Kalk. Follert lives in Cologne and has become an influential artist in the field between acoustic instrumentals, electronic collages and song-orientated pieces with vocals. Apart from album releases he wrote scores for different movies and contributed music to theatre plays. He has collaborated with musicians like World Standard, Felix Kubin, Sora, Niobe and did various remixes for projects like Calexico or Tied & Tickled Trio. On this CD he focuses more on guitar-based compositions making less use of electronic elements and vocals. This makes room for beautiful and intimate instrumentals in which the guitar is supported by rhodes, harmonica, string arrangements and a rhythm every now and then. Several songs carry a rather lonesome feeling - but they are alternated by more swinging upbeat pieces with jumping strings passages. A one-minute long theme introduced in the first track reappears in several variations throughout the CD establishing a frame for the whole album. The CD comes in a matt Digipack.

PS, UK Some 5 years after their debut album had the indie kids swooning in jangle-pop ecstasy, Airport Girl return with a radically altered sound, a glistening downbeat country-pop hybrid that is sure to win them many new admirers. From the world-weary plea of the piano-led "Hold Me Through The Night" to the heartbreaking country sigh of "I've Seen Mexico" a sense of regret pervades the album, none more so than on the desperate, hurt-racked "How Long Can This Go On?". More upbeat are the jazz-tinged "Don't Let Me Down Again" and "The Weather Song", it's "Sketches Of Spain" intro belying its true nostalgic nature, while "Show Me The Way", as pure a declaration of love as one could wish for, could have come straight from the Go-Betweens' masterpiece "16 Lovers Lane". Throughout there is judicious use of violin, cello, trumpet, harmonica and melodica to subtly create moods and textures within the songs, along with a willingness to experiment. The kids at the club may be momentarily fazed by Airport Girl's new direction, but ultimately any listener will be rewarded by an album with great musical and emotional depth. Airport Girl is a six-piece from Nottingham, formed in 1997 by singer-songwriter Rob Price. Their influences range from the Scottish pop sounds of The Pastels and Belle and Sebastian to the American flavors of The Modern Lovers and Pavement. They've been played on BBC Radio One by Steve Lamacq, the late great John Peel, and by John Kennedy on XFM.

PS, UK Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim is the biggest name in Brazilian music. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition. Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map. Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging. Jobim and Bonfa are popular throughout the world. Much of the later work of both men has long attained classic status and is in print (eg Jobim's number 1 USA LP with Frank Sinatra). Both men are major names in America and Japan. Bossa Nova has been given further impetus with the re-discovery of Tropicalia and period Brazilian music is now extremely prominent, in Britain and Europe especially. Any student of Brazilian music will appreciate this album.

It made a fortune and changed the face of cinema. After conquering the mighty piano on their homespun and beautiful We Made It For You, the two have now made the ultimate Christmas card with Tomorrow Time. At least, it's the Christmas card you wish you could send; with titles such as "You're an Idiot" and "A Sincere Fuck You," it's a far cry from garden-bound robins and snowy idylls. However The Boats have not injected their loving music with this harsh sentiment: you'll be pleased to know that they're as warm and delicate as ever and are joined by vocalists Chris Stewart and Elaine Reynolds who aid in the band's quest to weave the most pleasing micro-pop yet borne on our fair earth. "May Our Enemies Never Find Happiness" is a sterling example of this sentiment, with Stewart's silken vocals punctuated by Tattersall and Hargreaves' endearing percussive glitches and frosty melodies blending the two elements together seamlessly. Taking cues from the extended Moteer family of Hood, Clickits, Empress and of course, The Remote Viewer, these tracks sink instantly into the lore of their self-created genre. Elsewhere, Reynolds can be heard murmuring seductively on the heartbreaking "If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?" On Tomorrow Time we see a band who have successfully moved their style forward rather than repeat themselves, experimenting with their own form and their own preference, and in doing so have come up with another endearing and expertly-produced addition to their catalog. As the nights get darker and the sky threatens to shower us with snow once more, there seems no better time for Tattersall and Hargreaves' grand vision. Chop some logs for the fire, curl up with a loved one, and let The Boats sail into your dreams.

The Final Academy Documents DVD contains a rare glimpse of the man himself appearing in public with some stunning readings from his work at Manchester's famous Hacienda club. Its very limited release on video in the 1980s makes this DVD even more collectable. Also featured on this highly collectable DVD are some wonderful examples of Burroughs' work as an experimental film artist. "Ghosts At Number 9" and "Towers Open Fire" are two classic examples of Burroughs' film work with the likes of Anthony Balch and Brion Gysin.

PS, UK Following the success of their first DVD release "The Final Academy Documents" (CRDVD13), Cherry Red Records are delighted to announce the release of their follow-up DVD featuring one of the cultural icons of all time - William S. Burroughs. When writer William S Burroughs and artist Brion Gysin met Anthony Balch at the Beat Hotel in Paris at the start of the sixties they knew they had the ideal person to assist them in translating the ideas they had explored in experimental art forms to film. Balch began his moviemaking career collaborating with Burroughs on two shorts 'Towers Open Fire' and 'The Cut Ups'. The former is a relatively straightforward attempt to capture the essence of Burroughs writing on film, utilising key themes and situations featured in his books. The latter is an attempt to cinematically represent the art form. To achieve this each scene was filmed and edited in its entirety before the cut up method was applied - physically cutting the movie into foot long lengths and splicing them together randomly. The sound that no living being can stand up to: deep long forked tongue death. Hum of the end. Then the New Blockaders on the Thalid-O-Kid interrupt to make a canal of tumbling pile of canned garbage flowing into a heightened snow storm of singing trident lava-needled record players. Welcome here all trashit, submit your excessive horrible souls to our torture disparagement! If you listen close enough you might be able to hear the behemoth garbage truck rolling up everything into a black hole rear compartment. Background Killoway with his garbage can lid crook pointing the way into vortex nothing. Canned fuzz drops dead after the tidal bleach hand eliminates all movement. If you've heard it all from the Christians how scary the sounds of hell will be, you can hear from Killoway's field recording how your garbage is being treated once it's putrid soul is released. PS, UK Tony Hazzard's songs are known to millions. During his first flurry of pop success in the mid-late '60s he scored huge hits with "Ha! Ha! Said The Clown" and "Fox On The Run" for Manfred Mann, "Listen To Me" for The Hollies, "Me The Peaceful Heart" for Lulu, "Hello World" for The Tremeloes and "You Won't Be Leaving" for Herman's Hermits. In addition, his "The Sound Of The Candyman's Trumpet" was recorded by Cliff Richard and entered into the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest (note the word SONG there, folks). In the midst of all this success as a writer, Tony somehow found time to polish up a dozen or so of his demos (themselves things of fully formed wonder as played by the top session cats of the day) and thus was born his first 'solo' LP, Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard, released in 1969. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition. Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map. Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging. Jobim and Bonfa are popular throughout the world. Much of the later work of both men has long attained classic status and is in print (eg Jobim's number 1 USA LP with Frank Sinatra). Both men are major names in America and Japan. "Yökehrä" is the first of two vinyl-only LP's on the Dekorder label compiling the best material from her first four CD-R and cassette releases, all of which immediately became much sought after collector's items, fetching ridiculous prices on the eBay market. This LP is a beautiful collection of haunting (sometimes spooky) home baked freeform folk songs, strange lo-fi loops, vocal drones and psychedelic cut-ups, made using weirdly tuned plucked and strummed strings, bells, clattery percussion, unidentifiable wind instruments, backwards tape loops and a ton of other noisemakers all played and recorded by herself; accompanied by her distinctive voice (often looped and layered) with vocals sung and whispered in her native Finnish language making the whole atmosphere even more haunting and mysterious.

PS, GERMANY Daisuke Miyatani lives on the Awaji Island in Japan and usually works in a bookshop. Maybe that is where he finds the rest and silence to create his fragile compositions. Or it is his Japanese cultural background that leads to the calm, haiku-like miniatures. Daisuke establishes a reduced and minimal approach mostly based on guitars, accompanied by xylophones and other instruments. The songs have an open character, with a lot of silence, and repetition. These elements are contrasted with more ambient-like, electronically composed material. Hence the album is a fruitful interplay between constant atmospheres and point-like acoustic notes. Most of the songs include fieldrecordings which are rather subtle, underlying. All the electronic elements still have an annalog character, fitting with the dominating acoustic instruments. "Diario" establishes a warm and calm atmosphere and yet avoiding to be a trivial album. The techniques of minimalism, repetition, integration of concrete sounds, electro-acoustic combination are all used in a very discrete way. The result is an interesting album very comfortable to listen to. He has released several works on different, mostly Japanese labels. There are definitely parallels to Yuichiro Fujimoto's work, who also releases on Ahornfelder. The CD comes in a matt Digipack with detailed collage-artwork.

After having been irradiated by the Cosmic Light Of A New Millennium, you find yourself facing a black and white cover, where the only view of the universe is foreshortened, and represents a lighted shape showing branches of pine trees under a white sky, within the darkest black. Element which represents the esthetic detaching and, at the same time, a further step in the duo's artistic process, which determines their willingness to go beyond any goal already achieved. For MCIAA to make art means to risk daring the unknown, daring the listener himself to excel his own limits of perception of the work of art in music, without losing anything of their unique and unmistakable style. If, as many of the international critics have been remarking, MCIAA's works live on the boundary between Light and Darkness, it's also true that Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium celebrated the light of the outer spaces as well as Leave Me In The Black No-Thing represents a jump into the No-Thing of the empty inner spaces. Recorded in their secret recording-space up on the Western Alps of Piedmont, Italy, during the trespassing from dusk to the beginning of the night, the work lives of the same dark magic of the Wagnerian post-romantic overtures, suspended between the deepest silence and the most deflagrating sonic attack. Light/Darkness, noise/silence, permeated by Roberto Opalio's suffering vocal tunes, which defines and underlines the edge of the work. That evening Charlemagne Palestine and Tony Conrad were together on the same stage, and the resulting experiment was named An Aural Symbiotic Mystery. "More that 30 years had passed since our last experimental duet. Tony arrived and decided he could stay for several days in Brussels and we casually started to play together one afternoon. Aude, my wife, remarks about that special moment that in 5 minutes if not less, she heard a natural musical chemistry of beauty and power that greatly impressed her. Tony and I hadn't played, discussed or conversed about sound or anything in over 30 years. Nonetheless, the results were totally surprising, dazzling and deeply satisfying ... How is it that Tony and I can play so magically together without ever discussing or planning or anything? I have no idea! It's an aural symbiotic mystery!" --Charlemagne Palestine. Charlemagne Palestine wrote intense, ritualistic music in the 1970s, intended by the composer to rub against audience's expectations of what is beautiful and meaningful in music. A composer-performer, he always performed his own works as soloist. His earliest works were compositions for carillon (both church bells and tubular bells) and electronic drones, and he is best known for his intensely performed piano works. Palestine's performance style is ritualistic; he generally surrounds himself (and his piano) with stuffed animals, smokes large numbers of kretek (Indonesian clove cigarettes) and drinks cognac. Tony Conrad is an avant-garde video artist, experimental filmmaker, musician/composer, sound artist, teacher and writer. Along with John Cale, Angus MacLise, La Monte Young, and Marian Zazeela, Conrad was an early member of the Theater of Eternal Music, which utilized Just Intonation sustained sound to produce what they called "dream music." This group performed compositions by La Monte Young in which the other performers would sustain certain harmonically related pitches determined by Young for the duration of each piece. Conrad and Charlemagne Palestine reunite for this performance with as much meaningful intensity and symbiosis as ever.

PS, UK CD collection of Dada-related works by French avant-garde composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) including scores for Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters and Rene Clair. An enthusiastic Dada activist in Paris between 1920 and 1924, Erik Satie collaborated extensively with Tzara, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, wrote often in Picabia s journal 391, and was a sworn enemy of the Surrealist faction lead by Andre Breton. According to Man Ray, Satie was  the only composer who had eyes. All of Satie s principle Dada-related works are included on this unique CD: Trois morceaux en forme de poire, performed by Satie in July 1923 at Tzara s notorious Soirée du Coeur a barbe, at which fighting broke out between Tzara s supporters and the proto-Surrealist faction. Ragtime Dada, an extract from the ballet Parade performed at a series of Dada soirees by Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg in 1922. Entr acte and Cinéma, both scores for Francis Picabia s dazzling multi-media  instantaneist ballet Relâche performed in 1924. Cinéma was Satie s custom score for the celebrated intermission film by René Clair, while for their curtain call Satie and Picabia drove onstage in a tiny car, resplendent in jewels and furs, the whole production amounting to an act of anti-art provocation. Both are Satie s arrangements for solo piano. The 70 minute CD (40 tracks) is performed on piano by Bojan Gorisek, while the booklet features archive images and detailed historical notes by James Hayward.

PS, SWEDEN Sibiria was founded in 2002. The debut album "Norrlands inland" was released in September 2005. Swedish daily "Hallands Nyheter" wrote: "The first Swedish band in a long time that deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as The Smiths". "Inom familjen" is their second album. Although the distances between the four band members and the strong connection to their hometown Östersund is two things which imprints Sibiria, the lyrics range from a variety of subjects, such as love, hate and friendship. But we shouldn't talk so much about the lyrics. It's the music that is important, even if Sibiria sings in their native tongue, which is the most natural thing to do even if a lot of people see at as a statement. There has always been a melancholy touch to Sibiria's songs, even if the band sometimes come up with sprawling pop punches such as "Ljusdal" and, from "Inom familjen", the single "Det har varit svårare". On the new album the recording process was far more important than on its predecessor. Since Sibiria's three song writers make their music in different places and times and the distances makes it impossible to rehearse, the feeling of still being a band playing together was important. Therefore the recordings were made in a week at a summer house on the Swedish west coast. If you listen carefully you will here the warmth and love that these days and these songs recapture.

PS, US Wound up by God or the Devil is the soundtrack to a movie that has not yet been made. This is an album that symbion project did not expect to make; an album that you probably did not expect to hear. Encapsulated within are collisions of epic forces, chaotic sexuality, religious underpinnings, enlightened fragments of joy. During a brief, 3 week vacation from the recording of the soon to be released 3rd Freezepop album, Kasson Crooker (aka The duke from the synthpop trio Freezepop, also ex-Splashdown) wanted to focus on a collection of songs inspired by some of his favorite movie soundtracks. Moved by the epic nature of Vangelis (Bladerunner, Chariots of Fire) and retro/future aesthetic of Wendy Carlos (Clockwork Orange, Tron), Symbion Project created a "baroque minimalist electro" album that could live seamlessly in 1762, 1962 or 2162. Concerned with the nondynamic, robotic stagnancy of current electronic music, along with the overwhelming nature of being surrounded by a studio full of synthesizers and blinking audio gear, this album was crafted using only a single 32vco analog synthesizer. Very little was sequenced (except for the blazingly fast runs that Bach himself couldn't even do) and almost all the parts were played in by hand. Constant attention was given to exploiting and exaggerating the emotional tension of the songs through use of dynamics, from the initial songwriting to the final mastering (analog of course).

The sound we heard coming through in stereo was that of our coming-of-age years screaming back at us - a faithful reminder that our beauteous days of bowing before pin-up rock stars and carving iconographic logos on desktops and in famous treetrunks have not passed us by. No, David Vandervelde is here to remind us that the truest, most primal and addictive properties of rock n' roll are ageless. Indeed, this Chicagoan (by way of the dunes of West Michigan) started recording this debut full-length at age 19 yet he shows the maturity and swagger of a man much longer in the tooth. Bearing an immediate resemblance to MARC BOLAN and DAVID BOWIE, deeper listening rewards the listener with a much broader musical universe. "The Moonstation House Band" album captures the highlights from his two-year immersion in Jay Bennett's Clubhouse - as Vandervelde refers to the studio in Chicago - where he isolated himself to record this record virtually on his own, using the former WILCO multi-instrumentalist's studio as a big toy instrument, enjoying access to much of the same gear as used on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "Being There". Self-taught on guitar, drums, bass, piano, synth, and other studio tools, the listener can hear that Vandervelde is an adventurous artist, who embraces classic rock songwriting and whose spirit is just banging at the door to get unleashed.

PS, GERMANY "This group from the Detroit area is probably the weirdest experimental psych outfits from 1970. Originally the band was hired by Zig Zag Records to record cover tunes and easy listening, with the intention, 'We're just doing whatever we want,' the result was an overdosed rock concept album... 'to give the music back to the people.' Original copies are rare and pretty unknown among psych collectors until now! The 7 songs with an average length of 7 minutes combine different styles of music, from heavy garage rock to bluesy West Coast, drifting into various tripped-out, funk, jazz elements with humorous/social comments. Structure, feeling and complexity can be compared to experimental Krautrock, while the group's basic sound is represented better by end-'60s U.S. hippie rock as Country Joe & The Fish, Grateful Dead or The Head Shop with its excessive fuzz guitar work, Farfisa organ, amazing vocals by Cleveland's Bocky and several additional instruments, sax, harpsichord, cello, percussion, bells. Studio work is pretty tricky, lots of unexpected mixing and experiments, with flashes of UK's legendary White Noise. This CD issue contains a 12 p. color booklet with a band's bio, and the cool original album design, made by John Williams who also worked for Zappa -- so it can be assumed which influences Zappa used for his 1972, Grand Wazoo album?!? Wazoo presents at the highest level of musicianship free & atmospheric rock -- a unique kind of musical renaissance! -- Discover it, it's a unique piece of early '70s psychedelia."
