Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week
Almaas, Steve and Ali Smith - You Showed Me CD $8.50 15% off (Parasol)
Second album from Steve Almaas (Suicide Commandos, Beat Rodeo, solo artist) and his significant other Ali Smith (Speedball Baby). Ali Smith's musical background is steeped in punk, rockabilly and most notably, the blues stomp of Speedball Baby. Steve Almaas was in on the ground floor of punk rock in the late-70s, as a founding member of Minneapolis’ Suicide Commandos, as well as a precursor to alt-country with his band Beat Rodeo during the 80s. As with their self-titled debut (PARCD084) their shared love of American song manifests itself yet again on their second album, ‘You Showed Me’. Steve and Ali continue to share vocal duties, while Steve contributes the lion’s share in the songwriting department. Of course sprinkled amongst the original compositions are cover versions of some of their most beloved songs. The album leads off with the title track, their version of “You Showed Me”, made famous by The Turtles, but actually a Byrds song (by McGuinn & Clark) from ‘Preflyte’. They also add sultry pedal steel to The Beach Boys’ "The Lonely Sea”, and include their unused but not idle contribution to the James Joyce Chamber Music project. Besides Ali and Steve sharing the vocal duties and Steve playing acoustic guitar, harmonica, piano and organ, the core band included long-time Steve cohort (and Holly and the Italians alum) Mark Sidgwick on bass, Speedball Baby's Andy Action on drums and multi-instrumentalist Jon Graboff on pedal steel, mandolin and guitar. Other guests include George Usher, Mitch Easter, Phil Hernandez, Matt Martin and Chris Maxwell, who also produced the album.

Audience

S/T
PS, US Audience is one of the most interesting groups in the British panorama of the late 60s/early 70s. Their sound was a manifestation of their desire to experiment with & masterfully blend different musical styles, such as rock, folk, jazz & blues. If we must make comparisons, Jethro Tull immediately leaps to mind, particularly for the band's use of flute. Audience gained moderate notoriety thanks to their constant gigging & they soon released this 1969 self-titled debut, which featured an excellent use of (predominantly acoustic) guitar (Howard Werth) and equally high-quality flute, sax & clarinet playing (Keith Gemmell), not to mention the distinctive voice of Werth, and their simple, but effective arrangements (in a period when pomp prog rock reigned supreme). "Maiden's Cry," brings to mind "Stairway To Heaven," but it was actually written 2 years before the Zeppelin-penned opus. An excellent debut here feat. 3 bonus tracks.

Bachmann, Eric
To the Races
PS, US His warm vocals & deceptively simple arrangements keep the songs quiet elegance ardent & complete, only occasionally augmented by Miranda Brown's angelic harmonies or Tom Hagerman's (Devotchka) haunting violin. From the gently urgent opening notes to quiet guitar strum & soothing piano lines, it's familiar but rarely as well articulated stories of self imposed or unintentional isolation & the common search for, or escape from, some kind of sanctuary.

Blood Money
Axis of Blood
PS, US Extras: CR-ROM track with live videos from May 11, 2006, T.T. the Bear's Place, Cambridge, Mass., to play on computers and video iPods. Money puts experimental music back into a rock music context where the onslaught of noise can be expressionist rather than intellectual, where music can be enjoyed simply as entertainment, and where musicians are allowed to be rock stars. An award winning composer and vocalist combines extraordinary extended expression with macho beats and extreme oscillator abuse. Simultaneously channelling the sprit of Throbbing Gristle, the mayhem of Pan Sonic, the terror of Diamanda Galas, and the other-worldly artificiality of Xenakis, Blood Money delivers at the intersection of metal, noise, electro and experimental. Jon Whitney has played various instruments in various bands since his teenage years but is far too embarrassed to own up to being in any of them. He's more known for being a DJ, VJ, web developer, video documentor, and founder of Brainwashed.com.

Coleman, Anthony
Pushy Blueness
PS, US One of the mainstays of the New York avant-garde since 1978, Anthony Coleman has worked with every major name in the downtown scene and more. A brilliant player, composer and critical thinker, his projects are some of the most consistently interesting and radical around. Long overdue, this CD of classically based chamber works sheds new light on this misunderstood musical master, and contains intimate solo pieces and large ensemble compositions that will stimulate, delight and confuse even the most experienced listener.

Cursive
Happy Hollow
PS, US Their most recent record, "The Ugly Organ", racked up considerable accolades: named one of 2003's best records by Blender, called "the best album of [the band's] career" by the NY Times, and given a 4-star rating by Rolling Stone. "Happy Hollow" is an expansion of their trademark discordant swell, marked by a new bounce, a buoyant strut, and a recognition that hey, this is fun. Dissonant yet distinctively melodic guitar sounds and front man Kasher's ever-cathartic yowl now mesh and clash with horns, piano, accordion, and other instruments. The themes addressed here include shattered American dreams, small town malaise, and religious hypocrisy. Never repeating themselves, always pushing forward artistically, and never settling,
Cursive raise the bar with yet another groundbreaking record.

Delmontes, The
Carousel
PS, UK 24 tracks. LTM are pleased to announce the very first CD by The Delmontes, the cult garage pop band from Scotland. Formed in Edinburgh in 1979, The Delmontes released just two singles on Josef K-affiliated indie label Rational Records: Tous Les Soirs (1980) and Don't Cry Your Tears (1981). Boasting a poised avant-retro sound and vision (three of the five band members were female), the band prefigured a raft of subsequent indie trends (C86, Creation, Sarah, TweeNet). Both DinDisc and Zoo Records offered to sign the group, who completed a full UK tour with the Teardrop Explodes, but sadly this potential was not fulfilled and the band split at the end of 1982. Drummer Bernice Simpson subsequently joined The Pastels (1983-1989). Digitally remastered, Carousel features 24 tracks (74 minutes of music), including all five songs from the splendid Rational singles, as well as a rich harvest of previously unreleased demo tracks recorded between 1980 and 1982. The booklet includes a detailed band history as well as archive Delmontes photos and ephemera. Stand-out tracks include Tous Les Soirs, Don't Cry Your Tears, Ga Ga, No No Billy No, Love in a Guillotine, Thursday and Won't Give In. Contemporary reviews praised "a band at the top of the queue" (Smash Hits) that "damn near defined a new hip-hippyness with the classic Tous Les Soirs (Melody Maker).

Early Day Miners
Offshore
PS, US Mentored by Daniel Lanois, Daniel Burton has been putting his project-oriented stamp on a variety of records the last ten years and it has all coalesced into this career-defining work. "Offshore" is one continuous piece, made up of six distinct songs. It's equally beautiful and noisy, composed though loose, akin to the late '80s/early '90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis, their predecessor Peter Gabriel, or modern day saint William Basinski. In the Lanois/Eno tradition, Burton collected an all-star cast to flesh out his vision with members of Horace Pinker, Olo, Black Mountain, Windsor For The Derby, Unwed Sailor, and Tortoise.

Eluvium
When I Live By The Garden
PS, US Over the course of three albums, Eluvium (a.k.a. Matthew Cooper) has crawled from total obscurity to his rightful place as one of America's premier modern composers. His fan base includes Death Cab For Cutie, Explosions In The Sky, and The Album Leaf. In fact, of the nearly twenty new Temporary Residence releases last year, Eluvium's "Talk Amongst The Trees" showed up on more Top 10 lists than all others combined. Even more surprising is the fact that his music is missing two traditionally crowd-pleasing elements: a beat and a voice. This record is a companion piece to "Talk Amongst The Trees", and it showcases both the neoclassical piano-driven elegance and the tidal drones that he's become almost famous for.

Froberg, Tobias
Somewhere In The City
PS, US New album from acclaimed Swedish singer-songwriter. The next Jose Gonzalez perhaps? Compared to Jose, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkel, Bright Eyes, Damian Rice, and Devendra Banhart, but ALL MUSIC GUIDE says: "There's no real reason to play spot the influence here: Fröberg is an original and Somewhere in the City, the artist's second album, is a delicious trifle. Nearly every instrument is played by Fröberg and his co-producer, Linus Larsson, and although a few guests are brought on board (Norway's Ane Brun sings a duet with Fröberg on "Love and Misery"), this is clearly not a group effort. Fröberg's skillful acoustic guitar work (again, as on "God's Highway," reminiscent of Simon's, particularly his early folk style) is smartly placed up front throughout most of the recording, miked closely and used wisely to set the pensive, sometimes melancholy mood." God Is An Astronaut
A Moment Of Stillness
PS, UK God Is An Astronaut were formed in 2002 by brothers Niels and Torsten in Wicklow, Ireland. The band released their debut album 'The End of the Beginning' on their own label Revive Records in March 2003. Now with the worldwide release of the 'A Moment of Stillness' EP and their second album 'All Is Violent All is Bright' on UK label Rocket Girl, the band will finally see a proper release outside of Ireland. Their music and videos have received extensive play worldwide and at home, including major radio/TV shows (MTV - The Comedown, MTV2 - 120 Minute Show, TV3 - Law and Order, film ads; RTE - Fair City; Sky - ads for films and sports events) and countless online internet radio shows. Specifically in the UK, they have been played on BBC 6, XFM and Resonance FM. The title track from the EP, released as a single has already spent three weeks in the Irish top 40. Both CDs trademark God Is An Astronaut's extraordinary energy, emotion and tension, building from serene ambience to searing intensity. Torsten and Niels are joined on these recordings by drummer Lloyd Hanney (who was trained by the late jazz legend Johnny Wadham), making this album a much closer representation of their live sound. They are considered by many to be the most intense live act to emerge from Ireland in recent times. "Fragile, love it to bits....an incredible builder....it's amazing." Eddy Temple Morris, XFM London "Majestic." Hotpress. "Few post-rock bands stand out from the mob but the Dublin three piece have honed a sound that is entirely unique." Metro "GIAA have really struck gold this time out." **** The Ticket/The Irish Times "This extremely strong second album from the dark-hearted Wicklow-based trio should drag them out of the shadows." **** RTE Guide Music.

Grails
Black Tar Prophecies Vol 1,2,3
PS, US Important is proud to release The Black Tar Prophecies in it's complete form including two tracks not available on the limited edition European vinyl only releases. At the start of 2005 Grails returned to the US from a month long European tour. Stepping off the plane most of the band walked in one direction and the violinist strayed off in another. It ended up being the last time most anyone would see or talk to him. A bandmate of 3 records and 5 years had vanished only to exist in the form of vague rumors (violin hocked for petty cash, living on the streets, etc). As the varied reports of brief encounters and sightings grew stranger and darker, the band started a series of recordings called Black Tar Prophecies. The remaining members had particular dissatisfactions with how the band had been grouped into the innocuous contemporary 'post-rock' movement. This frustration, combined with newly liberated instrumental roles, introduced new possibilities for the band's sound. In this way the collected Black Tar Prophecies ends up being a more idiosyncratic mission statement for future Grails recordings, revealing their fondness for the groundfloor 60's and 70's experimental artists that saw music as a process of discovery as opposed to the pre-conceived, pre-parametered, commodified sport that underground music has become. A parallel is now forming between Grails and oldschool experimental bands like Faust who, rejecting their past, started over from the beginning to build new languages in music.Grails third full length recording, and first full length since leaving Neurosis' label Neurot, is The Black Tar Prophecies. Seven of these nine tracks from this full length were released in small highly sought after pressings of 12" vinyl on two European labels. The Black Tar Prophecies is a massive evoltionary step in the established Grails sound and it is shrouded in change and pain. The somewhat clinical studio sound and recording style which has established them a tremendous following has been replaced with a much more free and conceptual recording style. This method liberated the group in the studio and these recordings feel much more open, heavy and for lack of a better term "psychadelic." We're not talking about the cliché co-opted psychadelic fashion, but psychadelia as a reckless embrace of new states of mind and possibilities. This sound has always existed within a Grails song but now it's been heavilly pushed to the foreground. Perhaps even more elloquently and simply stated, Black Tar Prophecies 1-3 is their best record yet.

Great Crusades, The
Four Thirty
PS, US Four Thirty personifies The Great Crusades by infusing their trademark determined raw energy into a collection of tracks that winds listeners through the depths of Chicago, New Orleans and other cities with the stories they've created.

The band's goal for Four Thirty was to create the warmest reflection of their ability while harnessing their raucous energy. The outcome reveals boisterous, yet well-balanced vocals and colorful harmonies coupled with guitar playing reminiscent of rock and roll's storied past. And while all this is happening, the driving drums and bass hold the band on a course somewhere between the shoulder of the road and its median, but by no means strictly along the dotted line.

Heads, The
Under the Streets of a Headlong Dive [U.S. Release]
PS, US British psych-rock-garage-kraut juggernaut's latest gets an official U.S. release on Alt Tent! HIGH BIAS REVIEW: "U.K. combo the Heads has always been on the edge, in every sense, of the psychedelic underground. On Under the Stress of a Headlong Dive , its latest chunk of igneous rock, the meds have finally worn off. Whatever sense of restraint might have leavened the sonic chaos on previous platters is gone, leaving an overwhelming miasma of squalling acid feedback and cosmic biker rock. Noisy, semi-improvisatory tracks like "Stodgy," "Swamp of Chutney Morgan" and the amp-twisting opener "Earth/Sun" fry synapses the way co-eds sizzle on a Central Texas summer sidewalk. If you were always disappointed that the Psychedelic Stooges never lived up to that original moniker, the Heads is your nitroglycerine-spiked blotter."

KLF
The Chill Out
PS, US Thee #1 essential 90s chill out record. The KLF: Jimmy Cauty, Bill Drummond. Say what you will about mind-expanding drugs, but without them, the world wouldn't have SERGEANT PEPPER'S, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, or KLF's CHILL OUT. The very concept of a chill-out room only became necessary within the rarified rave culture of the '80s and '90s, when club-goers needed a respite from Ecstacy-induced whirling and the random hugging of strangers. On CHILL OUT, listeners are treated to a sonic collage that works as both fascinating listening and an aural blanket in which to wrap oneself to counteract the affect of too many pinging synapses. Each song here is a hallucinatory vignette, filled with sounds that could have been collected from dreams. A sleepy sax floats over ocean noises and seagulls in "Melody From a Past Life Keeps Pulling Me Back," while elsewhere are heavenly choirs, railroad ambience, Tibetan chants, stuttering synthesizers, a snippet of Elvis Presley singing "In the Ghetto," sounds of thunder, and disembodied voices off the radio. It adds up to one of the most original and enduring examples of a musical genre that has subsequently been mined past the point of usefulness. PREVIEW :Q (7/99, p.151) - Included in Q's Best Chill-Out Albums of All Time - "...inventing ambient house and the concept of the chill-out room. CHILL OUT added definition and plotline....More coherent and enjoyable than the records it inspired."

KLF
The White Room
PS, US A classic. The final album by the legendary J.A.M.s/KLF. After the incredible success of their "Doctorin' the Tardis" single in 1988 (better known as that theme from Dr. Who), Drummond and Cauty had plenty of money to hire talented musicians (instead of merely sampling them, as on their early recordings). The White Room is the result, an album bursting with hit singles that nevertheless flows as well as any concept album. Often overlooked as a classic from the acid house era (mostly because of the KLF's retirement one year later), The White Room represents the commercial and artistic peak of late-'80s acid-house. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide.

PS, US Their tenth full-length is yet another stunning collection of songs written by Kurt Wagner and brought to life by up to seventeen band members and collaborators. Eschewing the overt country influences of early Lambchop records and the R&B and soul influences of mid-period albums for a hushed austerity that is uniquely southern yet oddly universal, "Damaged" continues in the quiet and haunting tradition pioneered on the past three Lambchop albums ("Is A Woman", "Aw C'mon", and "No You C'mon").

Molina, Jason
Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go
PS, US "...these are meditations on depression, waiting, dislocation, separation, doubt, fear, loneliness...the usual from me...but here, if I did not see redemption or even a glimmer of hope, and thought I could put that into lyrics and a simple melody, I allowed that to be the driving force of the song. In the past I would edit these themes out or push them to the sides in favor of a better line technically, or a more anticipated rhyme. This session, in my mind, leads easily into my upcoming projects" - Jason Molina.

Mountain Goats
Get Lonely
PS, US "Get Lonely" is every bit as assured as its predecessor, "The Sunset Tree", but the mood is entirely different. "Sunset" chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between John Darnielle and his stepfather and derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, while "Get Lonely" is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record. The mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. It's a quiet triumph, murmuring with a modest but entirely surefooted confidence. An uncannily coherent and subtly redemptive record which will come to be seen as Mountain Goats' most resonant, assured, and magical collection of songs so far.

Mudsuckers
Mudsuckers
PS, UK Swamp noise drone. Feedback is layered like mud on the carcass of song structure. Robert uses primitive cassette manipulation as well as digital processing to thicken the sound into a swamp. Think Credence Clearwater Revival without the one chord they knew. On three of the songs, Pete uses his analog reel-to-reel wall-of-sound processing apparatus. Longjaw Mudsuckers was inspired by a mid-eighties cassette where Merzbow mixed John Hudak's nature sounds into a screaming mass of sonic debris. Robert recorded a stream after the huge New Year's Day storm and Pete plugged it into his system, making it sound at times like a stream, an ocean, and robots whispering mechanical secrets. This CD contains some of the first recordings of Tom Carter's circuit bending. Individual attributes of Gabe Mindel's guitar roar, Tom Carter's ebow laptop whirl, and Horton's clanky homemades merge into the mud stew. Driving the swirl are samples of boogie woogie piano, riffs from the session, and pounding drums of guests Michael Donnelly and Doug "Moonshine" Jin. The last number, SWEET, conjures the bar room sound of Kansas City, 1920, but recorded inside a thermonuclear reactor. The sounds created are so raw and tormented it's hard to believe they were having a good time. Must have something to do with the times, the war and the general vacuity of that season's holidays. How did these recordings happen? During the torrential rains of December 2005, caused by global warming, Robert Horton invited Tom Carter, Gabe and Pete of the Yellow Swans, and Glenn Donaldson up the hill to his home in El Cerrito for food, drink, and music-making. As it turned out, Pete and Glenn couldn't make it, so Gabe, Tom, and Robert vibrated the peaceful El Cerrito neighborhood to mud. We had beer, wine and much feedback. The turbulence of the sounds matched the late December weather. The following week when Pete came over to overdub his sounds, Robert had found an article on mudsuckers in the Berkeley Daily Planet. The headline was "Mudsuckers may be ugly, but they have value." A band was born. A mudsucker is a fish that's mostly a mouth, which spends its whole life on one patch of mudflat. Scientists use these fish to monitor carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and other toxic chemicals in coastal waters.

Nouvelle Vague
Bande A Part (Ltd Edition)
PS, US In 2005, the French duo's eponymous debut introduced their singular take on post-punk nuggets by the likes of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Tuxedo Moon, and The Undertones, recasting them as svelte, sophisticated bossa nova-inflected chansons. This follow-up is a beguiling, retro-futurist odyssey, containing covers of Echo And The Bunnymen, The Buzzcocks, Lords Of The New Church, Billy Idol, U2, Blondie, New Order, The Cramps, Bauhaus, The Smiths, and more. "...a beautiful, melancholy exercise in deconstructing familiar songs and reassembling trace amounts of the melodies into fresh music" - Boston Globe. "Fresh (and refreshing) takes on these classics...The songs are so wildly different in their dreamy form that they stand on their own" - Flaunt. O'Connor, Jennifer
Over The Mountain, Across The
PS, US NYC-based vocalist/guitarist O'Connor's songs are elemental and emotionally charged, but also suffused with humor and the kind of melodic invention that transcends the underground rock 'n' roll thing. Her influences are artists with a fresh take on self-awareness, from Destroyer, Silver Jews, Aimee Mann, and Smog, to Dylan and Petty, as well as Jay Z, Kanye West, and Dizzee Rascal. Featuring the bass stylings of James McNew (Yo La Tengo), the album also showcases Al Weatherhead on guitar, with keyboards and backing vocals by Kendall Meade (Sparklehorse, Helium), and the occasional backing vocals of Britt Daniel (Spoon). "Her music is laid back and literate...she often draws comparisons to Elliott Smith and old-school Liz Phair, and it's easy to see why. Her songs are simple, melodic, and direct, and her voice is raw and real" - Venus.

Pajo
1968
PS, US Influenced by horror movies, the music of Gorguts, & the poetry of Hafiz, this was recorded, on the laptop, w/ Pajo playing all the instruments. The airless, direct-to-hard-drive guitars are part of a wider sonic screen & the presence of real drums brings the mutant folk of "s/t" into a more recognizable realm for us earthlings. Spending more time on the individual instruments allowed him to get into a slightly more full sound (or less empty depending on your politics).

Park Attack
Half Past Human
PS, US This recalls the tribal arrhythmic sounds of DNA, the blaring energy of Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, & noise guitar hell of early Sonic Youth. The addition of a 4th member they've solidified the band's sound to a severe stomping force of nature.

Parrenin, Emmanuelle
Maison Rose
PS, US She had been part of a traditional "antique folk" movement in France in the late 60's & recorded 8 albums w/ musicians from this scene before this last album, recorded in '76. Certainly, the avant-garde edge lurking beneath the simple folkiness puts in mind the explorations of Brigitte Fontaine w/ her sometime musical voyager Areski. Her music has its own deeply ethereal quality, & the album itself has its own magic spell to cast that renders comparison w/ other albums
unimportant in the end.

Peelers
Let's Detonate
PS, US The 2nd full length album from this rockin' Chicago band. Long regarded as the thee go-to, good time band from respected rags the degenerate bozos at Horizontal Action magazine. On this record, they apparently enlisted a time machine because while you still get the top-notch, straight rock, everything else sounds like it's filtered though something that hasn't been invented yet; similar to a rolling, futuristic, bowel dropping thunder, especially the bass. You've got the former GAZA STRIPPERS drummer and Mr. Bagwell on vocals who croons about dinners in space & traveling to cities that may or may not exist. What is really comes down to is the CD speaks for itself. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Founded by Glen Johnson, Piano Magic has maintained a fluid membership since it's first release in 1996 and has included guest contributions from Hefner, The Wisdom Of Harry, ISAN, The Bitter Springs amongst others in that time; working with 14 different international labels, releasing a total of 15 records (excluding remixes and compilations), playing concerts all over Europe.

Piano Magic
Low Birth Weight
PS, UK Piano Magic were formed in the summer of 1996 by Glen Johnson who's aim it was to create a flexible group in the same way that This mortal Coil had done in the eighties. He drafted different musicians in for each recording session and early live shows, with Mogwai, Plone, Pram and Six By Seven, featured new line-ups and set lists at each gig. This loose way of recording worked so well on Piano Magic's debut album 'Popular Mechanics' in late '97 and its a concept that Johnson has continued to the present. 'Low Birth Weight' features collaborations with some outstanding talent. 'Crown Estate' and 'Dark Secrets Look For Light' has Simon Rivers from The Bitter Springs on vocals. 'Bad Patient' is sung by Rachael Leigh of baby Birkin, backed by ISAN. 'The Fun Of The Century' features the guitar of Alexander Perls of Icebreaker, while the last track 'Waking Up' is a cover of a Disco Inferno track sung by Pete Astor and guitars by David Sheppard who are collectively Wisdom Of Harry and Ellis Island Soundl.

Their vastly improved production and writing makes this record a refinement of their art. "Ratatat lay squealing metal harmonies over choppy Neptunes-style dance thumps, then break into pastoral waves of keyboard tone, riding dub tempos and hip-hop struts. They're crotch-pumping arena pimps and introverted minimalists..." - Blender. Satie, Erik
Socrate + Melodies
PS, UK 21 tracks. LTM is pleased to announce a new CD edition of the acclaimed recording of Erik Satie's symphonic drama Socrate, performed by Music Projects London and previously available on the Factory Classical label. Completed in the spring of 1918, Socrate is a typical eccentric piece from avant-garde pioneer Erik Satie. Written in three movements for voice (four sopranos) and small orchestra (or piano), the text is extracted from three Platonic dialogues and depicts the last days of the Greek philosopher Socrates, condemned to death for corrupting the young men of Athens. The subtitle "symphonic drama" belies the understatement and economy of Socrate, which Satie aimed to make "white and pure like antiquity." To achieve this, Satie claimed that he ate only white foods. Socrate itself lasts for 30 minutes, and is joined on this CD by five short song cycles written by Satie between 1886 and 1923: Trois Melodies (1886), Trois Autres Melodies, Trois Melodies (1916), Quatres Petite Melodies (1920) and the absurdist Ludions (bottle imps) (1923), the latter with lyrics by poet Leon-Paul Fargue. The 61 minute CD was digitally recorded at All Saints Church, Petersham, UK. Sopranos Susan Bickley, Eileen Hulse and Patricia Rosario perform with pianist Robin Bowman and conductor Richard Bernas. This new CD edition from LTM features new artwork and revised liner notes and translations, including full texts of Socrate and all eighteen Melodies in both French and English. Socrate + Melodies has already been praised by The Gramophone (1990).

Severed Heads
Viva! Heads!
PS, UK 13 tracks. LTM are pleased to announce our latest CD release by Severed Heads, the eclectic Australian electro pioneers who have recorded some ten studio albums over the decades since 1979. Viva! Heads! was digitally recorded at various live performances between 1998 and 2005, chiefly in Europe and Australia. Seamlessly edited by head Head Tom Ellard, the music ranges from techno to electronica and modern composition (with a beat). Unusually for a live album crowd noise had been entirely removed, so that Viva! Heads! works just as well as a mix CD. Stand-out tracks include Greater Reward, Dead Eyes Opened and The Ant Can See Legs. All are new arrangements, making this CD a must for Head heads the world over. Says Tom Ellard: "We've taken the old tunes and renewed them - true to our past but relevant to new listeners. It's a compilation but kicks way above that - live versions known to please, spanning seven big years of festivals and nightclubs. Trust it!" Viva! Heads! runs for 61 minutes. The booklet contains a selection of treated images from the Heads' trademark multimedia live shows. Career Precis: Formed by Tom Ellard in Sydney in 1979, Severed Heads cut a legendary series of experimental glam albums such as Since The Accident (1983) and City Slab Horror (1984), before flirting with commercial success on the singles Dead Eyes Opened and Hot With Fleas. Their fifth album from 1989, Rotund for Success, became an independent bestseller worldwide, and featured the classic dance singles Greater Reward and All Saints Day. In 1994 the reissue od Dead Eyes Opened made the Australian commercial top 20. Severed Heads just won Australia's ARIA award - Best Soundtrack Album (2005) for the motion picture The Illustrated Family Doctor.

Slits, The
Revenge Of The Killer Slits EP
PS, UK Three new tracks. The Band started in 1976 in the wake of the immediate chaos and carnage of the Sex Pistols. The band quickly settled on a central line up of Ari Up, Tessa Pollit, Viv Albertine & Palmolive. It was this line-up that supported the Clash during their 1977 White Riot Tour with the Buzzcocks and the Subway Sect. Palmolive eventually left, leaving the band to release only a handful of records. The first being the legendary Dub influenced "Cut" album. The more experimental "The Return Of The Giant Slits" followed this up and these together with a clutch of acclaimed singles goes to make up The Slits cannon. After a 25 year sabbatical which has seen Ari Up moonlight as the legendary, Ragga Queen Mad-dusa and Tessa become a lethal martial arts expert (whilst bringing up their respective children) THE SLITS ARE BACK...The core of Ari & Tessa have joined forces once again, drafting in Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook and legendary guitar hero Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Sinead O' Connor...) to create the "Revenge Of The Killer Slits" EP. The three tracks recorded in the summer of 2005 feature the songs "Slits Tradition", "Number One Enemy" (an unrecorded song from the earliest depths of the bands career) and "Kill Them With Love". This is a one off recording from a Slits line-up that will never be repeated again. Ari & Tessa are already working with 3 new members to carry on and extend the Slits legacy and they are playing gigs world wide as we speak... The EP "Revenge of The Killer Slits" marks the beginning of their long awaited return.

Southside Johnny & Asbury Jukes
Live @ Paradise
PS, US In the early 70s New Jersey's music scene was dominated primarily by two great bands: Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Southside Johnny had a diverse sound that passed easily from effervescent R&B to boogie rock, to tender heartbreaking ballads. The recording on this CD is from 1978 and features Southside Johnny in top form playing Boston's famous Paradise Theater in 1978. The horn section is the real momentum behind the band, which amazingly is able to replicate its full-bodied studio sound. The tracks are written mainly by Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt, but also include covers by Sam Cook and Leiber & Stoller.

Teledubgnosis/Nic
Teledubgnosis vs. Nic (2 x CD)
PS, UK Teledubgnosis (drummer Ted Parsons, producer/audio alchemist jason wolford, and multi-instrumentalist gregory damien grinnell) are ambient dub metal scientists, dark riddim warriors, noise sculptors and industrial roots rockers... imagine the ragged sonics of adrian sherwood's on-u sound label mated with the low end depth of a bill laswell recording, and you're getting close or think of what the stooges might have sounded like had lee perry been at the mixing deskŠ the sound of teledubgnosis can also be described as organics taking form - the organics that arise from exploiting the tech...Features contributions from other musicians such as east coast luminaries tony maimone (pere ubu), joel hamilton and octopus (dälek), west coast musician leigh marble, and david sims (the jesus lizard, scratch acid), accumulating a rich palette of ideas and sounds to blend in the final mixes. Necessary Intergalactic Cooperation (n.i.c.) is based in oslo, norway and is no ordinary rock band, rather a musical supergroup drawn together for the purpose of a total global shakedown. drawing from diverse backgrounds in dub, rock, punk, jazz, and electronica, the four members create a potent melting pot of sounds and styles, fusing the past and the future with music that is both timeless and universal... n.i.c seeks to create common ground between established musical genres taking them in exciting new directions...

VanGaalen, Chad
Skelliconnection
PS, US Using an assortment of instruments, both conventional and handmade, Chad's created an even more diverse assemblage of music than for his last album and debut, "Infiniheart". He's an amazingly talented illustrator and animator. You may have seen his videos for his own "Clinically Dead" and Love As Laughter's "Dirty Lives". Both were featured on MTV2's "Subterranean" video show, which Chad also hosted. He's played with Built To Spill, Wolf Parade, and The Pixies, to name a few. This record is a restless, living thing, roaming between simple yet beautiful ballads, aggressively dissonant post-punk and jazz-inflected synth-pop explorations, at times whimsical, and at others heartrending.

Vapor Theories
Joint Chiefs
PS, US The Vapour Theories (aka the Gibbons brother, Michael & John of BARDO POND) radiate into the world, and make themselves evident in various ways according to the substance in which they manifest. Therefore they manifest tone in a threefold manner; by instinct, as animal sound, and in advanced Spiritual tones. The Vapours which they derive from the physical and animal elements are temporal; that which they derive from the Spirit is eternal. Vapours are the Father of Wisdom, and the means to gain all Wisdom is from Vapours. A slight study of the science of sound soon makes us familiar with the fact that sound is vibration and that different sounds will mold sand or other light materials into figures of varying form. The Vapour Theories have learned at the Fountain of Vapours to play the SONG OF VAPOURS, which cradles into existence whatever such a musician desires. LIMITED CD.

Windmill
Racing/Tokyo Moon
PS, UK Windmill is the recording name of 26-year old Matthew Thomas Dillon. Born and raised in Newport Pagnell, Bucks, now residing in Bedfordshire, this home counties boy makes music that stands up against the greats of American indie, with echoes of Built To Spill, Modest Mouse and Mercury Rev pervading his classic, piano-led songcraft. Windmill's debut release Racing/Tokyo Moon is both beautiful and broken, sung in a tortured hue that's somewhere between Wayne Coyne and Neil Young but, at the same time, all his own. With thousands of songs in the Windmill archives, there's plenty more epics to come. An album is already waiting in the wings and Dillon's planning on a long career. 'I'd like to end up as one of those songwriters you see playing piano on some obscure music show. They are 60 years old and you've never heard of them but when you look them up they have ten albums and it's been their life. It's all about experiences for me.'

PS, US Fullerton, CA quintet who have sculpted a debut album of some depth & creativity while reserving the right to rock out when the occasion calls for it. But what the record does best from the opening track is rip in an emo meets indie fashion that's always under control. Almaas, Steve and Ali Smith
You Showed Me (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 22)
PS, US Second album from Steve Almaas (Suicide Commandos, Beat Rodeo, solo artist) and his significant other Ali Smith (Speedball Baby). Ali Smith's musical background is steeped in punk, rockabilly and most notably, the blues stomp of Speedball Baby. Steve Almaas was in on the ground floor of punk rock in the late-70s, as a founding member of Minneapolis' Suicide Commandos, as well as a precursor to alt-country with his band Beat Rodeo during the 80s. As with their self-titled debut (PARCD084) their shared love of American song manifests itself yet again on their second album, 'You Showed Me'.

Steve and Ali continue to share vocal duties, while Steve contributes the lion's share in the songwriting department. Of course sprinkled amongst the original compositions are cover versions of some of their most beloved songs. The album leads off with the title track, their version of "You Showed Me", made famous by The Turtles, but actually a Byrds song (by McGuinn & Clark) from 'Preflyte'. They also add sultry pedal steel to The Beach Boys' "The Lonely Sea", and include their unused but not idle contribution to the James Joyce Chamber Music project.

PS, US The drummer of Rosolina Mar & is a member of Medves along w/ Giuseppe Ielasi, Stefano Pilia, Renato Rinaldi & Riccardo Wanke. Let's Get Out of this Country (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 5TH)
PS, SPAIN Camera Obscura new single with exclusive B-sides. Having just finished the UK tour, and ready to tour the USA during all the month of July, CAMERA OBSCURA are more active than ever after the release of "Let's get out of this country", their third album. And out of their country they will go, because this summer they're booked in some festivals, like Emmaboda in Sweden or Belladrum and Summer Sundae in the UK, as well as a short German tour and two shows in Spain in September (in Madrid and at the Lemon Pop festival in Murcia). Besides all this, we are glad to announce the forthcoming release (in September) of a new single taken from the album after that glorious "Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken": this time, the chosen track from the album is the title track, "Let's get out of this country". As usual, the B-sides in both formats of the single (CD-single and limited edition 7") will be previously unreleased songs: except for the song on the B-side of the 7", which is the cover version of Sheena Easton's "Modern girl" the band recorded for the 80's covers album that went along with the latest issue of Q Magazine. The CD-single, then, will feature apart from the title track other two previously unreleased pop gems: "Lemon juice and paper cuts", and "Return to send her".

PS, AUSTRALIA Geoff O'Connor, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of Melbourne quartet the Crayon Fields, is a myopic boy genius whose record collection consists almost solely of op-shop vinyl LPs released before 1970. Consequently, the Crayon Fields play intricate, atmospheric pop songs that recall the minor key majesty and close-knit harmonies of 60s maestros such as the Zombies, the Byrds and the Beach Boys. Animal Bells is the Crayon Fields' debut album, after forming in the last year of high school in 2002 and releasing two previous independent EPs. The album title refers to the animal-shaped toy bells that were used throughout the album and link its 12 concise songs. Basic tracks were recorded at Sub Studios with engineer Simon Knight earlier this year, then taken home to be polished into their final, shimmering shapes. The band suffered a major setback midway through recording when Sub's Latrobe University studios were broken into overnight and all the Crayon Fields' gear stolen. Thankfully after a tense week scouring local pawn shops and Cash Converters, all of the band's equipment was recovered, the culprits brought to justice, and recording resumed. Nothing of this hiccup is evident in the finished product - Animal Bells is an unruffled, dreamy pop masterpiece. Geoff's often falsetto vocals and ringing 12 string guitar playing are ably accompanied by Brett Hudson's nimble bass playing, Chris Hung on 2nd guitar and percussion and Neil Erenstrom on drums. Nicole and Julian of fellow Trifekta artists Minimum Chips also provide guest vocals. In recent times, the Crayon Fields have supported many a touring national and international band, including the Unicorns, Dirty Three, Electrelane, Deerhoof, Calvin Johnson, Kelly Stoltz and Architecture in Helsinki to name a few. Now with the multi-layered, resonant and gorgeous Animal Bells, co-released by Chapter Music and Trifekta Records, it's time for the Crayon Fields to step forward and be counted among Australia's finest, most intriguing bands.

Friendly Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 29TH)
PS, SWEDEN From the label that gave us Jens Lekman, TTA and Embassy comes Erik de Vahl - a deeply original singsongwriter that you should check asap. Being tagged as the most difficult (and least known) of the brave pop poets and catwomen of Service it is time to wash away any such false notions. It's time for elevation. Spotlights on! Thanks for taking us by surprise. It's a pop microcosmos affair of intimacy, subtleness and warmth, alone and very special somewhere on the DYI-postfolk-toytronic axis.

DJ Shadow
The Outsider (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 19TH)
PS, US A record that will confound those who believed they had Shadow pigeonholed. Working with several different vocalists, in styles spanning everything from hyphy, the Bay Area's newest hip hop hybrid, to folk; from aggressive hardcore rock to left-field alternative dance music, the album is an almost schizophrenic collection from an artist to whom loving music and making music are just two sides of the same coin. Features: Artifact (Instrumental), a relic of Shadow's work on an abandoned solo LP by former Rage Against The Machine front man Zack De La Rocha."3 Freaks",which features the hyphy emcees Keak DaSneak and Turf Talk, was the impetuous, inspired result of Shadow's love-at-first-listen affair with the Bay's answer to crunk. "Seein' Thangs", featuring Mississippi's finest, David Banner, Kasabian's Sergio Pizzorno and Christopher Karloff were introduced to Shadow by his engineer, and "TheTiger"was the standout result. Even Bay Area icon E-40 is in there, rapping about "the legendary DJ Shadow." Hip Hop Legend Q-Tip and Lateef The Truth Speaker are featured on the single "ENUFF" with UK crooner "Chris James" featured on the first single "You Made It."

El Boxeo
Awake & Dreaming (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 29TH)
PS, US Awake, the first half of the album, is the band as the band- the three main members playing their songs live, with minimal experiments/production frill. With Awake, the band presents its stripped down violin/bass/drums sound, just as one might encounter in the normal live setting. Dreaming, a long-brewed idea of surrealism & the subconscious, finds the band under no limitations, representing both dreams as songs & songs as dreams. Adding to the mix, Dreaming is chock full of instruments, noises & voices (cello, viola, piano, a door, flute, trombone, saxophone, trumpet, twigs, keys, organ, bells) creating an ever changing, occasionally hallucinatory flow of moods & imagery. "I've never heard post-punk with violin before & damned if it doesn't work fairly well... A great combination of tone & texture." -Splendid.com.

El Hijo
Canciones Gringas (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 5TH)
PS, SPAIN Cover versions tend to be based on someone else's work with the aim to present a more defined image of the interpreter. Ignoring the continuous attempts to underrate this form throughout rock's history, covers have assured their survival mainly thanks to the evolution of the interpreter's role, who rereads and remodels the original to serve their own understanding and diagnosis. Through a process of personalization which reinforces El Hijo's identity, Abel Hernandez (ex-singer of Migala, one of the best Spanish independent bands of all times) has managed to modulate his voice in the four cover versions found in this second release, overtly called Canciones Gringas (Gringo songs). It follows the first EP La piel del oso (Acuarela 2005) in which Abel Hernandez went back to the studio after Migala's amicable demise. Although both title and song selection show manifest reverence to certain musicians and models of North American rooted folk-rock highlighting the penetrating vision that El Hijo's music represents, the value of these four songs is intimately bound to the exhilarating narration/interpretation game and the final result is as complimentary as it is renovative.

Embassy, The
Tacking (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 29TH)
PS, SWEDEN Jetset electro-pop ecstasy from Göteborg outfit that eschews Rock City Sweden's guitars for a glittering sound that recalls The Legends, The Radio Dept, OMD, The Field Mice, Tears For Fears, and Biff Bang Pow, New Order, and Depeche Mode! The Embassy is Fredrik Lindson (vocals, guitar) and Torbjörn Håkansson (programming), two lads brought together by a mutual loathing for the Göteborg "rock scene", and by punching each other up at an office party. Definitely a special brand of tension here! IT'S A TRAP! REVIEW: "It sounds like what would happen if Pet Shop Boys and Sarah Records had a child, or in this case - two children. Although you could read in a million and one influences into this, this record sounds NOW. Like all pop should, but almost never does." (Johannna Smith)

Felipe, Dino
Dinosaur Bones & Pyramids (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 29TH)
PS, CANADA DINOSAUR BONES & PYRAMIDS finds former member of Old Bombs and Fukktron DINO FELIPE layering intoxicated melodies against waves of coke-rush electro beats & psychedelic synth soundscapes. Catchy vocal heavy tracks like "ripped & shit" and "ovulation celebration"
featuring OTTO VON SCHIRACH are refreshingly inventive, and undeniably infectious. DINOSAUR BONES & PYRAMIDS is 13 upbeat and engaging tracks on CD format. Not just just dsp mayhem for comp sci kids with short attention spans, this is real music! Dino Felipe has made "music" since the age of 6 on tape recorders embracing the 4track at age 16 and ever since filling tapes up with musik, until he financed a gateway when he was 21. Now an agoraphobic hermit he makes music whenever something inspires him: flies, death, ghosts, quantum physics, and quantum physiques as well in the right bedroom. Dino was in what are now called "noise" bands from the age 16-21, although he hates the label "noise", only because he strictly believes it is MUSIC. If attempted to be described Dino's music is psychedelic, electronic, with large pop infusion and piles of ideas compressed into a song. Dino pushes boundaries by tricking you, confusing your expectations, and hurting your ears BUT: most of all it is post-apocalyptic pop.

Fourcolor
Letter of Sounds (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 26TH)
PS, US Following the release of his work as part of the electro-acoustic quartet Minamo on 12k (12k1031, 2005) and the proto-pop outing under his new moniker Filfla (Plop, 2005), Fourcolor (Keiichi Sugimoto) is back with his second release on 12k, Letter of Sounds. His previous work, Air Curtain (12k1029) was a critical success selling out the first pressing in little over one month. On Air Curtain, Fourcolor explored new directions, building upon delicate, implied rhythmic structures moving away from the strictly drone based material on his debut cd Water Mirror (Apestaartje, 2004). With Letter of Sounds Sugimoto pushes his sound even further by bringing the rhythms more to the foreground and taking influences from his previous, more pop-based work, as Filfla. The album uses many dominant rhythmic structures such as on the opener "02" which couples catchy guitar harmonic hooks with sliced melodic beats or the beautiful "Rowboat" in which Sugimoto collaborates with long-time friend Naoko Sasaki/Piana (Happy) using a variety of instrumentation and vocals. Similarly, a majority of the work on Letter of Sounds finds itself working around tight, syncopated micro-rhythms. Of course Letter of Sounds is not without its delicate undercurrents and warm, stretched-out, whispy tones that have become signature to Sugimoto's sound (the gorgeous finale "Frame"), but his desire for a more up-front and structured approach continues the evolution from a style he has mastered into new, more challenging territory, and expands his palette as an artist.

God Is An Astronaut
All Is Violent, All Is Bright (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
"Few post-rock bands stand out from the mob but the Dublin three piece have honed a sound that is entirely unique." Metro "GIAA have really struck gold this time out." **** The Ticket/The Irish Times "This extremely strong second album from the dark hearted Wicklow-based trio should drag them out of the shadows." **** RTE Guide Music.

Heavens
Patent Pending (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 12TH)
PS, US Fans of Matt Skiba's other band, Alkaline Trio, are already spreading the word about Heavens. Mining that rich, dark vein of 1980's songwriting that's suddenly back on the radio with a vengeance, this debut allows Skiba to explore a different side of his songwriting, calling upon the influence of the Sisters Of Mercy rather than the Ramones or Misfits as with Alkaline Trio. His lyrics are as beautiful as they are eerie, his vocal melodies at once darkly hypnotic and intensely catchy, while collaborator Josiah Steinbrick builds great minimalist guitar parts in the tradition of Wire and New Order. Producer Ben Lovett adds ambient backdrops and lush string arrangements, making the whole a beautiful decaying masterpiece, catchy enough to bring Alkaline Trio's legions along for the ride, darkly angular enough to intrigue fans of Interpol.

Helen Love
Junk Shop Discotheque (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 5TH)
PS, SPAIN At least we can see fulfilled one of our dreams: releasing an exclusive HELEN LOVE single on Elefant Records. They are one of the bands who have better used the pop aesthetics and the fascination we all have for the colourful icons in pop culture, and we love them for that. We love them since they came out more than ten years ago, when the riot grrrl sound was going on strong, with their first single and their tributes to Joey Ramone. The three girls from Swansea (lead by Helen herself, of course) were going to split up after they released the first single, but here they are (around twenty singles and four albums later), turned into one of the sensations of the international underground punk-pop scene. Purveyors of catchy melodic candies, exploding disco-indie-punk cut'n'paste, HELEN LOVE have been favourites of John Peel and Joey Ramone (who even invited them to play in New York, and to sing with him on one of his solo albums), their songs have been covered by ASH (they have even played with Tim Wheeler on aPeel Session) and they've been supported since they started by Everett True (Melody Maker, CTCL, Plan B). We are now sealing this relationship with a single in two formats: CD-single and 7" vinyl (pop music's own format); both in limited editions and luxury packagings (CD on digipack and pink coloured vinyl). HELEN LOVE have come up with three wonderful songs for this single: infectious bubblegum-pop for fun and all-night dancing. "Junk shop discotheque" is a glam-rock, punk-pop bomb with a disco flavour and vocoder vocals (with echoes of Suzi Quatro, DENIM and LA CASA AZUL), which will fill up dancefloors all over the globe. Even more frantic dancing is found on the remix of "Debbie loves Joey" (a love story between Debbie Harry and Joey Ramone, the original version of which appeared on the "The bubblegumkillers" EP, which was released on American label Sympathy For The Record Industry), whilst "Shut your mouth", the third song that completes this fantastic single, is a powerful melodic, guitar-pop pill. The cover on the single is by Punk Boy Jamie (who is usually behind the band's characteristic and immediately recognisable artwork, and their website, too), and the three songs have been mastered by Xavier Alarcón to guarantee you the best possible sound.

Madrugada
The Deep End (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 5TH)
PS, NORWAY 2005 studio album from Norwegian foursome Madrugada. All Music Guide: "The Deep End is majestic beast of a record, even by Madrugada's not-too-humble standards. This album, their fourth since their 1999 debut, managed to establish them as an award-winning, platinum-selling thinking man's arena rock band in their native Norway... Unike its predecessor, 2002's Grit, there are few in-your-face Stooges-style rock tunes on The Deep End, and all for the better, really. The sound is definitely bigger here than on any of their previous albums, with many of the songs featuring Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, and pedal steel guitars plus plenty of guitar tracks by the ever-solid guitar twanger Robert Burås. This is a fine record, a return to form of some sorts, and it could be viewed as a more accessible sibling of 2001's great The Nightly Disease or a successful update of their debut. It's hard to say, but it is definitely a great mix of Madrugada's finest qualities as a band: the darkly epic songs, the tastefully twangy guitar playing, and the commanding vocals of Sivert Høyem. It may well be their crowning moment."

All Music Guide compares this to their debut sums it up perfectly: "The lyrics are more poetic, the songs are much more diverse, and the production is wonderfully dirty, giving the record a rather dangerous aura. It seems as if Madrugada has taken elements of the best bits from their past -- for example, the beautifully dark "A Deadend Mind" -- and combined them with a new rawness and energy found in "Nightly Disease Part Two," an intense, high-tempo song echoing depression. Like some of the best records ever made, it is not particularly accessible, but once you get into it, it is sure to make a lasting impression."

Meeting Places, The
Numbered Days (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 3RD)
PS, US Numbered Days is the second album of luminous, infectious noise-pop by Los Angeles' The Meeting Places. On their sophomore record the quartet has written ten new songs that craftily combine melodic indie-pop with the tremulous soundscapes first explored on their debut Find Yourself Along The Way (Words On Music, 2003). Numbered Days was recorded at The Ship by Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy, Earlimart). With ten songs clocking in at thirty-three minutes, Numbered Days evokes a leaner, more urgent approach to songwriting, in the spirit of The Jesus and Mary Chain's Darklands or The Shins' Oh, Inverted World.

This album shows an adrenaline overload of rock shorn of its fripperies; songs, beginnings, middles & endings. This is pure electronic current abstracted into riffs & textural sound poems. Moebius' refusal to over-polish his work supplies an unpredictable cutting edge.

Nardwuar The Human Serviette Vs. Bev Davies
A 2007 Punk Rock Calendar (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 12TH)
PS, CANADA "The best photo taker in the whole world" Stiff Little Fingers There are few photographers in this wonderful world who have taken pictures of both '60s garage punk legends, The Barbarians and hardcore heroes, The Dead Kennedys. In fact, I challenge you to find one! And if you did, it would be Vancouver, BC Canada's Bev Davies. I first met Bev at Joey Shithead of D.O.A.'s annual "garage sale" where she was selling some of her photos on his lawn. As I gawked at her pointed portraits of The Pointed Sticks, The Slits, Black Flag and The Rolling Stones, fascinating tales of the punk and the nonpunk rawkin' variety soon emerged. From Bev's early years growing up in Toronto, Ontario, (I was astonished to find out that Bev almost went to California with Neil Young on his famous hearse ride to hell!) to her subsequent relocation to Vancouver, BC, where she basically, from the late '70s to mid-'80s, shot everything that moved, the stories she told were so cool! Whether joining D.O.A. on many of their ground-breaking tours, flying to US Festival, or talking to John Lennon on the phone, this had to be documented! Not that it hadn't: Bev worked for a few years at Vancouver, BC's news and entertainment weekly, Georgia Straight, and was a contributor to Slash, Damaged, and tons of other fanzines. Nevertheless, I craved more. Hmmmm... Why not, with the help of Mint Records, create a 2007 PUNK PUNK ROCK CALENDAR to help quell my photographic fantasies? Yeah! Now, please view this calendar not as the final word on Bev's pics, but as the first step in the examination of one of the great chroniclers of our generation. Bev's photos help document the famous and unknown rock 'n' rollers of the 20th century, and without a doubt, combined with her amazing stories, provide a valuable resource for even the "casual" musicologist. But Bev's photos ain't for museums, they're for you and your wall! Keep on rawkin' in the free world! Have a good tea! Naysayer, The
Smoke Reality (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 26TH)
PS, US The Naysayer's new record Smoke Reality was designed to mess up your mind. Anna Padgett is the Naysayer: a Texan/Louisianian Brooklyn transplant whose lyrics may shock you, confuse you, make you laugh out loud, turn red, or feel like puking. Despite the ganja vibe evoked by the title, you don't have to be on drugs to enjoy Smoke Reality. Anna's straight thoughts are way more psychedelic than your stoned ones. However, this is not to say that her songs don't sometimes stray towards the gay. If it's not working with a boy, she gets a girl: "Leave no stone unturned." And when Anna sings, "Why don't we do it on a leaf?" you might find yourself thinking, "That is so much sexier than doing it in the road." However, not every song is about the pansexual paradigm. All the human emotions get dressed up in Anna's poetic love: "Lose Yourself in Nature and Find Peace" is a city dweller's vision of spiritual nirvana; "Parents" is a politically-charged cautionary tale addressed to anyone who has ever had them. "I'm a Shark" is straight-up, "Don't Mess with Texas"-style punk; the title track conjures up visions of Judee Sill jamming with the Sea and Cake. Expertly recorded by Tara Jane O'Neil in the Oregon woods, with amazing drumming by Geoff Soule (Fuck) and additional instrumentation provided by Tara Jane and Elizabeth Venable, Smoke Reality challenges the unwritten rule of current music writing: classify, categorize, stick everything in a bag. In keeping with her previous four releases, the Naysayer continues to say no to facile codification. This is bagless music, people!Repeated listens of Smoke Reality reward the listener with new layers of melodic and lyrical complexity. Some of the best music demands an ounce of participation on the part of the listener. Listen carefully, and this album may speak to you about your own crazy life situation. It might also affect your dreams... Don't wait until you're dead to find out what you've been missing! Tracklisting: 1. smoke reality 2. parents 3. do it on a leaf 4. I'm a shark 5. hot headed hores 6. miss & hate 7. topanga 8. clean girl 9. insult to your manhood 10. don't look up at me 11. lose yourself in nature and find peace 12. leave no stone unturned 13. come back 14. love horse 15. fear menu. The Naysayer played the 2005 All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the UK, curated by Slint.• Naysayer collaborators, past and present, include Tara Jane O'Neil, Geoff Soule (Fuck), James Baluyut (+/-), Ruth Keating, Matt Sutton, and Karla Schickele (Ida), Miggy Littleton (Blood on the Wall, White

Ruiz, Florencia
Cuerpo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 26TH)
PS, MEXICO Flo Ruiz has been selected for a feature on Paste magazine's forthcoming recommended new music download site. VERDIGRIS, a new Mexican label by the folks at Static Discos, starts with the debut from Argentinean composer Florencia Ruiz and her album 'Cuerpo'. Florencia Ruiz was born in Buenos Aires in 1977 and is considered as one of its leading musical proponents, outside the boundaries of conventional pop music. The musical work of Florencia Ruiz is aimed at the composition of songs, in the most classical sense. She has also created music for art installations and dance ensembles. Her music is a natural mix of contemporary and popular music, an ideal and personal search full of subtle arrangements for strings and piano. 'Cuerpo' is filled with restrained and minimalist spaces that create a soft and hard silences. Simple and complex, 'Cuerpo' is a recording clothed with clear words and strong soulful melodies. Her first two recordings, the 'Centro' EP and this album, were recorded in home equipment, and what shines through is the natural beauty of songs that were conducted and arranged in a simple manner. The casual ncorporation in the recording sessions of "found sounds", electronic clatter, guitars and improvised keyboards speak of a transparency in the writing process that Florencia Ruiz used when creating 'Cuerpo'. In her minimalist lyrics there is an evident torrent of emotion and introspection, which Florencia Ruiz refers to as "little phrases that want to paint something, with no strong or large meaning. Small phrases that tune themselves to the melodies of my voice" 'Cuerpo' is a conceptual album "in which all of the songs speak of the body", explains Florencia Ruiz, "they speak of different bodies, the child's body, the distance of bodies. The relation we have with bodies, the way we sometimes attack them, and not always in the physical sense, the space and shapes of things around us" The Verdigris release of 'Cuerpo' includes a remix by Murcof of the track 'Siberia'. Verdigris will release Florencia's second album, 'Correr', in 2007.

Secret Mommy
The Wisdom EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 29TH)
PS, US What kind of mad genius could record a trip to the dentist to have their wisdom teeth pulled only to turn it into a CDs worth of awesome electronic tracks? SECRET MOMMY of course! Secret Mommy is the fax-warping alter ego of Ache Records head honcho Andy Dixon and "The Wisdom EP" is a mini album collection of amazingly creative tracks that includes remixes by Joshua Kit Clayton, Sun Ok Papi K.O of Sonig records and Piers Whyte of Ache records. Each track from The Wisdom EP flows together as a seemless mix offering a unique experience that won't soon be forgotten by its listeners. BIO: Secret Mommy is The beautifully strange, fax-warping alter ego of Ache Records head honcho Andy Dixon. Having played an integral part in the Northwest punk scene with bands D.B.S. and more recently the Red Light Sting, the work of Vancouverite Andy Dixon has always been rooted in DIY punk rock. Though his computer-based glitch project known as Secret Mommy is a departure from the abrasive guitar-work of his former bands, the approach is much the same. Andy creates music that sounds like the inside of a computer, with beeps and blurts and zaps and clicks perfectly organized, with the echo of techno's most complex moments vying for speaker time in the distant background The result is a polyrhythmic, visceral celebration of sporadic delight. A cut n paste exploration of activity and movement, obscured by mild absurdism.

Steinbruchel
Stage (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 26TH)
PS, US Stage is Steinbrüchel's second full-length solo release on LINE. The album contains 10 scenes that move between warm organic and melodic digitalized sounds and cold crystalline-like sparks. The sounds and compositions are even more detailed and have a more melodic approach then previous recordings by Steinbrüchel. Single isolated and stretched tones are structured together with smaller loops and particles of clicks and noises into dense atmospheres. Parts of the sounds used in several scenes are based on piano recordings by Bernd Schurer and/or guitar recordings by Tomas Korber. For the first time Steinbrüchel has used and processed recordings of acoustical instruments to this extent in his compositions. Stage brings to life once again a collection of precise and carefully composed structures and textures, which are formed into different scenes where they all interweave with each other. All the tracks were composed in 2005 for the interactive dance performance HYBRIDOME, produced by Avventure in Elicoterro Prodotti - Ariella Vidach AiEP. The tracks on the CD release are in a different order and are also structured differently than the actual still unfinished dance performance. Ralph Steinbrüchel, born in 1969, studied Communication Design at Central Saint Martins School in London, where he acquired a Masters of Arts and Design with distinction. He now lives and works as a musician and graphic designer in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2002 his composition zwischen.raum [domizil] was distinguished with the Max Brand Award for Electronic Music [phonoTAKTIK.02 Festival, New York]. In the same year he received a compositional scholarship from Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland, to work on his release circa [LINE, US].
