23 Skidoo
Seven Songs + Singles
PS, UK Expanded reissue on CD by seminal post-punk group 23 Skidoo.
Initially active between 1979 and 1987, 23 Skidoo released a series
of genre-defining records fusing post-punk, dub, industrial, world
and hip-hop styles. Singles include Last Words, Tearing Up The Plans,
Coup and Language. Albums include Seven Songs, The Culling Is Coming
and Urban Gamelan. In 2000 the group returned with a self-titled album,
23 Skidoo, and remain hugely influential. Originally released on Fetish
Records in February 1982, the mini album Seven Songs topped the indie
charts and established 23 Skidoo as a groundbreaking commercial force.
"Intoxicating - one of the most exciting records I've heard since
Unknown Pleasures" (Paul Morley, NME, 1982); "23 Skidoo
conceived of funk as a sinister energy, and Seven Songs still sounds
bloodcurdlingly intense" (Simon Reynolds, Rip It Up & Start
Again, 2005). Digitally remastered, this extended CD includes seven
bonus tracks from the singles Last Words and Tearing Up The Plans.
The booklet also features a detailed history of the elusive group,
with contributions from Skidoo members past and present.

Aan Meets Eyes Like Saucers
Kristallivirta
PS, US While some moments sound like an even more far-out Angus MacLise,
that's about where any comparison ends. To be certain, this is among
the most challenging releases on the label; certainly not for beginners
of any of the the bands involved (KULKIJA, UTON, EYES LIKE SAUCERS),
but rewarding to those who recognize there is an outer-margin to where
music is today, & draw satisfaction from hearing half-crazed (fully
crazed?) musicians trying to push those margins.

Activities of Dust
New Mind [multimedia]
PS, US DOUG SCHARIN (HIM, CODEINE, REX, JUNE OF 44), BILL LASWELL,
JEFF PARKER, BERNIE WORRELL come together as Activities of Dust. Doug
Scharin says: "A New Mind is the result of hours of recorded
feedback that had been collected from various mixing sessions over
the past decade. Within are compositions, possibility waves, constructed,
originally, from manipulation of these feedback signals. The initial
impressions from Jeff Parker were then added to the recordings. Parker
interpreted, reacted to & in some cases painted a definitive picture
of latent melodies within the feedback structures. Combining &
blending these two elements created a basic form for the introduction
of keyboard, bass & drum elements to enhance the movements taking
shape in the music. Bill Laswell & Bernie Worrell fleshed out
the tracks."

Alpha
The Sky Is Mine
PS, SPAIN This is Alpha's eighth album (including last year's compilation
of collaborations and remixes, 'Without Some Help') but is their first
'vocal' album since 2003's 'Stargazing'. Whereas previous albums featured
a number of vocal collaborations, this time it is only long-term member
Wendy Stubbs singing on The Sky Is Mine. And just as their debut 'Come
From Heaven' (released on Massive Attack's Melankolic label) was widely
acknowledged as a classic collection of trembling torch songs, so
this album develops that strand dramatically further. Whilst still
deploying their skills for gentle experimentation, Alpha have tunnelled
their sound out to a bolder, brassier landscape with Wendy often belting
out her melancholic choruses like one of her hero, Shirley Bassey.
When Wendy first started working with Alpha they already had a lot
of musical influences in common such as Scott Walker, Michel Legrand
and Burt Bacharach. They also shared a love of simple love songs,
mixing and merging different genres with bittersweet melodies thrown
around by giddy synths and melodramatic strings. Over the years Alpha
have worked with many varied artists (Jarvis, Acid Casuals, Blueneck,
Coldplay to name a few) and are known for their inventive and emotional
production. Last year Corin Dingley mixed the James Roberts album
(a NME 9/10 on release) and more recently finished work on the superb
debut lp by The Heavy who were promptly signed to Ninja Tune and whose
album is released in the Autumn.

Analogue Minefield
Visions In Sonic Sense
PS, UK 3D digipak with 3D-spex!!! Analogue Mindfield's Gizzy D explains
that the groups wants to, "create auditory soundscapes of challenging
yet accessible music, whilst retaining an inspired socially conscious
theme to our tunes". This ferociously creative outfit indeed
harks back to a golden age when reggae called itself roots and planted
socially conscious lyrics into the public's consciousness. Delivered
with sensitivity and passion over stellar riddims, laid down by musicians
with an intrinsic feel for the groove, whilst adding a 21st century
update in message and incoming musical influences, the results are
100% dynamite. The three main participants are Gizzy D, Snapper J
and Kitty B, who are joined on their third studio album, Visions In
Sonic Sense, by a supporting cast of singers and players including
MC Ishu (Step 13, Manasseh Soundsystem), MC Jaz (DJ Reeza, Scribble
Orchestra and now Analogue Mindfield's new live MC), techno forager
Suspira (Transient Dreams who have worked with Eat Static and Ozric
Tentacles), Asian Dub Foundation's Dr Das on occasional bass and G
Frequency (Goontrax, Domination Records) providing some luscious double
bass and top turntablism. From the upbeat politically-biting skank
of Political Patsy to haunting female-sung ballad Reflections, they
handle conscious roots outings like Mediocracy and the brass-splattered
toast of Eire Beag like the great Jamaican vocal groups of the 70s
but still take the form to new vistas in roots dub ballad Dread Up,
all bathed in a rich dub afterglow. Be Careful Out There could be
a new street anthem for the 21st century while Music Man seems to
put an 80s electro-pop outing through the dub blender. Over the years,
Analogue Mindfield have worked with a diverse array of UK and Jamaican
musicians and made a substantial impact with their first two albums,
2006's Digital Brainwave and last year's A Fine Adjustment of Time.
Their third album is a mature affirmation of their vision and talent
for working with sympathetic co-conspirators while grasping the original
multi-cultural roots ethic and taking it into modern times. As to
be expected from a Malicious Damage act, Analogue Mindfield don't
confine themselves to the one genre they might be identified with:
Soul Crew brings in elements of UK free party dub-techno while Burnt
Out plants its incisive rhythms over a drum 'n' bass charge. The possibilities
are infinite. Leftfield's Cheshire Cat once described the band as,
"a heavyweight mix of reggae, old school dub with vibrant brass-driven
skankŠ like a mouthful of liquorice allsorts!" while Primal
Scream's mighty Mani declared, "You've got to get Weatherall
to listen to these tracks man, he'll fookin' love em!" So will
you.

Anathallo
Canopy Glow
PS, US The album's opening song introduces straight away the topic
of death. Among lush pile-ups of 'Pet Sounds' (Beach Boys) harmony
& 'Sung Tongs' (Animal Collective) texture, they sing to the rafters!
It's a surprisingly beautiful rendering of life's most feared result:
calm & considered, yet wide-eyed in approach, & colored by
kaleidoscopic detail. This, their 2nd full-length (& first for
ANTICON), could be described just the same. Texture & temperament
are paramount here, due in no small part to the band's multi-instrumentalist
might.

Au Revoir Simone
Summer Lines
PS, SPAIN Red vinyl. LIMITED EDITION 625 COPIES. Of all the groups
launched in the past five years, without a doubt, AU REVOIR SIMONE
is one of the most refreshing and succulent bands for true pure pop
lovers. Restoring once again the spirit of our Singles Club (Club
de Single), along with our idea of releasing exclusive singles of
our favorite artists, we contacted the Brooklyn trio and enticed them
with what you have in your hands, a delicious special edition seven
inch vinyl in red, with an exquisite photo on the cover (courtesy
of Anna Di Prospero, our favorite Italian photographer) which perfectly
depicts the feminine universe of AU REVOIR SIMONE. Their influences
include MODEST MOUSE, STEREOLAB, PAVEMENT, THE BEACH BOYS, Björk,
BROADCAST, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, GUTHER, LALI PUNA and MS. JOHN SODA.
In the autumn of 2003, they formed a group with just keyboards and
antique synthesizers. Two delicious albums, various singles and a
recent release of a compilation of covers and remixes are their legacy
to date. This legacy has sparked passions around the world and has
allowed them to tour half the globe, as well. A few of their songs
have been included in the famous television series, "Grey's Anatomy"
and have been special guests of David Lynch at the signing of his
book, "Catching the Big Fish". Similar to their music, they
are adorable, dreamy, simple and delicate, and this is why many people
compare them to the sisters in "The Virgin Suicides", the
first film of Sofia Coppola and NME has described them as the missing
link between LADYTRON and CAMERA OBSCURA. They are all
of this and more! The new single is a small gift from heaven and "Summer
Lines" is as delightful as a summer afternoon on the beach, a
melancholic, sad and cold tune, yet sweet and angelic at the same
time. "Haunted House" is a glorious instrumental which takes
us to the decade of the seventies when the explosion of techno-pop
inundated the shelves in music stores and instrumental songs were
a huge part of the first albums of OMD, KRAFTWERK, RHEINGOLD, EL AVIADOR
DRO and THE HUMAN LEAGUE, authentic futuristic harmonies of outer
space entities.

Avrocar
Against the Dying of the Light
PS, UK Avrocar hail from the city of Birmingham, UK. They have received
airplay and recorded a session for the late John Peel and have also
been featured by Mary-Anne Hobbes and Rob Da Bank of BBC Radio 1.
Avrocar have released records since the mid 1990's and are part of
the truly independent UK label collective Make Mine Music, who are
heading towards their 50th release in autumn 2008. What follows is
an account of the recording of the new album by mentor and long-time
confidant Lew Monick - "I suppose at the end of recording the
concept had become clear...even though it wasn't something the band
had thought about consciously at the time. There was a realization
that they had unwittingly evoked the constant passing of day into
night and night into day. No surprise when considering that the recording
took place in a small loft in near darkness and very often on into
the early hours of morning. In making this album, Avrocar had willfully
removed themselves from the usual machinations of recording, isolating
themselves, so to speak, from people and places they would normally
encounter. It was like being a part of something and yet being apart
from the very same thing. The resulting sounds were softer somehow
and the way the band had worked, less regimented than before, whether
by luck or by design, the process and the music felt more organic.
All the samples heard are taken directly from radio, many fortunately
working with almost finished pieces that just needed that extra something.
They came up with many tracks that sounded, to my ears anyway, like
short-wave transmissions bleeding through the airwaves from bleak
or exotic locales in Eastern Europe or North Africa. Along with the
occasional human voice and the daily coaxing of archaic musical machinery
back to working order, "Against the dying of the Light"
is often reminiscent of the early work of Kraftwerk. At other times,
I guess the listener may recall Stars of the Lid or even the more
esoteric releases of Fax Records. Whatever you hear in the rocket's
red glare of Avrocar's latest release, this is music best enjoyed
in a darkened room or outside at night, at high volume." Lew
Monick, Feb 2008.

2 previously released LTD ED albums now collected in one comprehensive

steps through the door hissing w/ deep space halitosis. Quietly eclipsed
by slow, subtly melodic breaths of solar wind, "II" finds
its ellipses crossing long, glowering belts of ambience & majestic
rings of thick, bass-heavy electro-pulses. Miniature terrestrials
appear as stringed
acoustics & other Earth-bound instrumentation peeks up through
the crackling electronic mists. 'III' began its days at the same time
as its kin, originally as leftover pieces, tv music, & failed
experiments recorded between 1995-99 from the 1st 2 BC albums &
then briefly released as a made-to-order CDR. "III's" lustmord
for global communication moans out in a series of lonely alien drones.

Bee Gees, The
Best of Bee Gees [re-issue]
PS, US Collects the Gibb Bros' pre-disco baroque-pop genius, originally
release on LP in 1969. Could be the first time on CD? ALL MUSIC GUIDE:
"If anyone needs conclusive proof that the brothers Gibb weren't
always the chest-medallion-flashing kings of mainstream disco or,
since about 1980 on, meaningless AOR washouts, the nearly 40-minute
collection of the Bee Gees' earliest hits will suffice in spades.
At their (perhaps, in hindsight) surprising best, the threesome, along
with capable if generally unremarkable rhythm section members Melouney
and Colin Peterson, created a slew of tender, affecting, and quite
lovely hits. While the Stonesproto-metal crowd of the time probably
thought them unbearably wimpy, their songwriting acumen, combined
with their harmonies, fine production by Robert Stigwood, and ace
orchestral/band arrangements by Bill Shephard, holds up astonishingly
well... Considering that everyone from Catherine ("Every Christian
Lion Hearted Man Will Show You") and Jimmy Somerville ("To
Love Somebody") to Low ("I Started a Joke") and Jose
Feliciano ("I've Gotta Get a Message to You") has covered
something from this collection is testimony to the songs' continuing
influence."

string section's rounds into a composite rock formation that's shaped
like a cello but carries the stank of teen spirit. The compositions
chunk along w/ quiet thunder & building textures; juxtaposing
dramatic tension against fluid looseness, not unlike some of Moondog's
more formal string works. But the piece de resistance is the beautifully
strange choral coda at the end of the line. A pleasant surprise awaits.

Campbell, Isobell & Mark Lanegan
Sunday at Devil Dirt
PS, US US edition of their 2008 album includes five bonus tracks over
the previously available imported edition. Bonus tracks, Fight Fire
With Fire, Asleep On a Sixpence, Violin Tango, Rambling Rose, Clinging
Vine and Hang On. Sunday at Devil Dirt is second full-length collaboration
between the former Belle & Sebastian member (Campbell) and Mark
Lanegan, the Screaming Trees frontman and part-time QOTSA vocalist.
Recorded between studios in the Catskills and Isobel's native Glasgow,
Sunday At Devil Dirt is an album of dust bitten ballads and troubled
wanderings, easily the equal of its predecessor. Again, Campbell and
Lanegan complement each other beautifully, like silk on cracked leather.
While continuing to mine the same rich seam of Alt-Country, Folk and
Blues of their debut, the new record also embraces a dusty southern
gothic, while a sultry, jazzy feel is evident on a number of tracks.
As with their debut, the album has been written, produced and arranged
by Isobel Campbell, with Lanegan providing lead vocal duties.

Champagne Riot
Paris & I (7"+CD)
PS, US Super Limited!! Think of the Human League's Dare!, ostensibly
a collection of love songs made to sound like science fiction; or
New Order's plainspoken anti-poetry couched in synthetic symphonies
that were the very antithesis of the everyday. It is this largely
abandoned idea of the velvet melody in the robotic glove to which
Champagne Riot aspires. A product of very limited means - "mainly
a Roland MC-307 groovebox and a couple of old guitars," says
Caspar - but the luxuriousness of the finished product belies the
budget with which it was made. Songs such as "Scandinavian Warfare,"
"I Dream About You at Night" & "Heroes of Our Time"
are rich with sonic detail, and choruses that are enveloping in their
windswept grandeur. They sound like urban life in all its wonder &
sadness, its busyness & also its terrible loneliness.

As w/ their critically acclaimed recent album, 'Mega Breakfast,' this

panic, & some truly bad cycling. They have expanded their repertoire

w/ some serious choir singing & funky harmonizing. There is plenty
of gems here... a new edit of recent single "Proper Rock,"
another cut "Ethnic Instrument" gets remixed by Parisian
disco superstar JOAKIM, then there is the classic group take on Tina

final sonic results reveal a daunting sum much greater than even the
involvement of such esteemed parts would imply; the Elves' lived-in
dexterity as a live band goads Vic's vocal delivery to a menacing
new muscularity, imbuing this batch of songs with a sinister vibe
not dissmilar to John Cale's black classic "Fear," the harsh,
articulate sleaze of Lou Reed's "Street Hassle" or the defeated
low key soul-music of Nick Lowe's last few records. And Chesnutt's
songwriting retains its trademark literary bent; central songs carry
the narrative weight, sturdy construction and lexical mystery of a
longlost Raymond Carver story. And as he still woos you with his squelched,
beautiful melodies, his sonic turns-in-the road take an even stranger
tack with the aid of the psych-pop veterans.

Connelly, Chris
Forgiveness & Exile
PS, US The album is again produced by TIM KINSELLA (Cap'n Jazz, Joan
of Arc), BEN VIDA (Town & Country, Terminal 4, Bird Show), &
CONNELLY himself, & the musicians comprise the same jazz &
improvisational band that played on 'The Episodes.' This time, however,
his group is augmented by the addition of 4 of his oldest friends:
DAVID MILLER (Fini Tribe), SHIRLEY MANSON (Garbage), DAVID TIBET (Current
93), & actress TORRI HIGGINSON (The English Patient, Stargate
Atlantis). Apart from the opening song, this is basically one long
piece divided into sections, an ever-changing & evolving meditation
on war, displaced peoples, families shattered by corrupt governments,
wrongful imprisonments, & torture. This impressionistic view is
characterized through improvisation, dramatic change in dynamics, disparate
imagery, ruined landscapes, & cities illustrated by Connelly's
poetry.

Atlas
PS, SWEDEN Goteburg, Sweden duo's debut full-length is a collection
of exquisite shoegazing postrock drama. DLM was founded by childhood
friends Jerker Lundh and Dag Rosenqvist, who shared a mutual admiration
for groups like Red House Painters, Sigur Rós, Led Zeppelin
and My Bloody Valentine. Atlas is the title of de la Manchas' debut
album and it's an album full of contrasts and beauty. Clocking in
at just over an hour, its nine songs ranges from moments of serene
and hushed melancholy to distorted shards of pure white light. It's
an album where words, voice and instrumental parts are interweaved
into a beautiful fabric, filled with both light and darkness.

Roots And Wire
PS, US DEADBEAT is Scott Monteith, a long-time Montrealer & recent
Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub-laden,
minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Musique
Risquée, ~scape, & Spectral, to name but a few. His 1st
full-length release for WAGON REPAIR here is aesthetically informed
by his long term collaborative friendship w/ ROBERT HENKE (aka MONOLAKE),
the close proximity of his fellow artists in Berlin & the opportunity
to collaborate w/ PAUL ST. HILAIRE (aka TIKIMAN). It is no surprise
that an album of such vast scope be largely inspired by the artist's
own transition from Montreal-based producer releasing on Berlin label
~scape for 5 years, to Berlin-based producer releasing on a Canadian
label. An uncanny logic is present throughout, weaving a fluid narrative
from disparate influences & styles. Might just knock you off your

MUSIC GUIDE: "John McCauley, aka Deer Tick, has been on a non-stop
tour since graduating from high school in 2004. He often performs
without amplification, delivering tunes with just his voice and guitar,
an experience that gives his vocals the primal power of a turn of
the (last) century mountain balladeer. McCauley's a singer/songwriter
with finely crafted literary lyrics married to folkie melodies that
sport influences from rock, blues, country, and pop, as evidenced
by his cover of Anthony Newley's "What Kind of Fool Am I?."
McCauley transforms the tune into a country waltz, straining to reach
the high notes, replacing Newley's measured regret with desperation
and agony, although the mood is broken by a goofy, loping instrumental
bridge just before the last two verses. The rest of the album, originals
penned by McCauley, is more straightforward -- tunes about lost love,
loneliness, and heartache delivered simply, highlighting McCauley's
emotionally charged, unadorned vocals."

Deupree, Taylor & Kenneth Kirschner
May
PS, AUSTRALIA May is the latest collaboration between New York composers
Taylor Deupree and Kenneth Kirschner. Recorded on May 9, 2008 at the
OFFF Festival in Lisbon, Portugal, the album represents the first
available live recording of Deupree and Kirschner's concert performances.
Continuing in the direction of their acclaimed post piano series,
Deupree and Kirschner's live work explores the intersection between
piano and state-of-the-art digital music technology. For this performance,
Deupree and Kirschner took an even more experimental approach than
they have in past concerts: sitting side by side at a single grand
piano, they both played piano and both played laptop, with Kirschner
playing the keys of the piano and Deupree directly manipulating the
strings inside, even as they both shared the duties of electronic
processing and sample manipulation. The result is a rich and complex
mixture of digital and acoustic timbres that breaks new ground in
their ongoing exploration of the role of the piano in contemporary
electronic music. PRESS (on Landing) "'Landing' is but another
crowning achievement for the master of micro-tonal beauty" -

DJ Olive
Triage
PS, AUSTRALIA Over the past two decades, DJ Olive has been a central
figure in New York's diverse sonic underground. As a member of WEtm,
DJ Olive created three stunning records that came to epitomize the
Brooklyn Illbient explosion. In the 00s, Olive turned his ears to
a range of other projects - joining forces with members of Sonic Youth
in a range of experimental outings, improvising with some of the leading
figures in Jazz including Uri Caine and Dave Douglas and starting
the 'Roof Music' label the Agriculture. In 2001 he also commenced
work on a series of 'sleeping pills' designed to create a deeply enveloping
environment in which the listener becomes engulfed in an audio tint.
The first of these editions published by Room40 was 'Buoy' (2004),
followed by the aptly titled 'Sleep' (2006). The third volume is 'Triage'
- a slightly darker and more densely textured work than its counterparts.
The piece was initially exhibited in installation form at the year's
Whitey Biennial and this published edition represents the soundtrack
of the installation. Listen quietly. "This is a sleeping pill.
Please listen to it quietly." - DJ Olive PRESS ON BUOY: What
Buoy most simulates is that state of consciousness where sensations
blurrily pulsate within a state of semi-consciousness and the usual
lines of demarcation between activity within and without temporarily
collapse; those gentle wave sounds, for example, might just as easily
be seeping in through an open window as emerging within a fleeting
memory trace. - Cyclic Defrost PRESS ON SLEEP: Sleep (which comes
with the written instructions "This is a sleeping pill. Please
listen to it quietly.") is designed to make you somewhat unconscious
while striking you subconsciously, in your most impressionable state,
through textured, filtered synths and graceful flourishes allegedly
produced from a turntable. - TinyMixTapes

47 Songs Humans Shouldn't Sing
PS, AUSTRALIA Eugene Carchesio's renown as a visual artist has unjustly
eclipsed his extraordinary output as a sound maker. Since the mid
80s, the Brisbane artist has steadfastly proliferated a sack full
of barely released cassettes and cdr's under the D.N.E. moniker. Twenty
years ago, he emptied his wallet to press 250 copies of the appropriately
titled LP "47 Songs Humans Shouldn't Sing". Then compact
discs arrived. The local pressing plant closed and the master tape
went with it. Copies were circulated to friends. A handful made it
to England. A copy did the rounds in Dunedin. And then suddenly, the
clutch of remaining copies disappeared. To a small legion, 47 Songs
became a coveted item, its whacked miniaturism a visionary jolt of
intuitive post punk energy. A suggestion of Ayler, a Chadbournesque
styling, a No Wave propulsion. This was not a jazz album! These were
47 small constructions. Sound diamonds. Songs. Not for human tongue,
yet instantly humable. Acoustic, yet coursing with electricity. Currents
of energy running through its veins. D.N.E. Spiritual genetics. Recorded
in a frenzied three days on four tracks of cassette. The sum of parts.
Twentythree plus twentyfour small explosions. WORDS (cont) This 20th
anniversary reissue has been faithfully remastered from the vinyl,
finally restoring this lost Australian classic. Out of the vault,
onto disc, the sparks still flying! Leighton Craig, Brisbane, November
2008 PRESS (on Various t it les) "Eugene has released a sackful
of barely released cassettes and CDRs under the D.N.E. moniker, consisting
of some of the most waywardly original and exploratory music made
in Australia." - Missing Link This is so beautiful I can barely
stand it. There is a bit of a Jewelled Antler vibe here, but this
trumps just about every great thing I've heard from that label. "Leaves"
should be released in a much wider format. This is too amazing to
go unheard by more people. This is Craig & Carchesio's masterwork,
and will instantly give you the sensation that you are outside, breathing
the delicious Australian air. Highly, highly recommended." 10

Dokkemand
Hons
PS, US Dokkemand is the alias of Marius Grøtterud Egenes, a
Norwegian musician of destructive proportions. Also a prominent remixer,
Marius has been leaving laptops in stitches as Dokkemand since early
2005. Walking the line between calculated restraint and frenzied,
arcade-tronic attacks, his output reveals much about the importance
of tension in composition. Broken-hip-hop beat collages accompanied
by an orchestra of disheveled music boxes, somber, glitch-laden balladry,
and minimal, warped ambience are all fair in this game. HØNS!
is Dokkemand's debut full-length on Other Electricities, featuring
contributions by Universal Records artist Kate Havnevik, legendary
Cranes vocalist Alison Shaw, Laura Becerra (Carrie), Sarah Hellström
(Lost Room), and Lars Wiik. Throughout, Marius utilizes his unique
palette in varying configurations, creating rhythmic landscapes amply
dappled with vocal-characters. Rounded out by manipulated samples
- the commonplace rendered ethereal, this collection stretches perceptions
and expectations alongside tones and timbres.

Always alternating between endearing & abrasive FLIPPER left no
room for the middle ground of "like." The album title is
a shot at John Lydon & his alleged plagiarism of Flipper's artwork

Garrie, Nick
Twilight
PS, SPAIN LIMITED EDITION 725 COPIES. MYSTERIOUS, CULT SINGER/SONGWRITER
EMERGES WITH CREAM OF SCOTTISH INDIE MUSIC SCENE TO RECORD STUNNING
NEW MATERIAL... Just a couple of years ago 'lost legend' Nick Garrie
entered a songwriting competition at a bar in London and, unsurprisingly,
won. His prize - a website which allowed those very few select people
who had been transfixed by his 'lost' classic album from 1969 to realize
that he was very much alive. A clutch of record labels immediately
got in touch and as a result The Nightmare of JB Stanislas, an album
that had only ever reached the promotional copy stage at the end of
the 1960s, was finally released in 2005 to widespread critical acclaim
on the Rev-Ola label. A compilation of lost songs emerged on the same
label the following year and Garrie played to adoring young fans in
hip venues in Paris, Barcelona and in New York where he captivated
listeners to college radio and the New York indie scene. Cut to 2008
and Garrie is introduced to fast-rising Scottish singer/songwriter
Ally Kerr through Rev-Ola records's head honcho Joe Foster, formerly
of Creation Records. After a series of phone conversations with Garrie
singing new songs down the line, Kerr invites Garrie to come up to
Glasgow to play at the club night he's resident at - Viva Melodia.
Friendships are struck with other musicians including emerging alt-folk
duo Doghouse Roses, culminating in the recording of five songs (with
plenty of live takes) over just one weekend at Riverside Studios in
Glasgow just a few months later. Fans and friends also involved in
the recording process included Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and
Duglas T. Stewart (BMX Bandits) on production duties with Duncan Cameron
(Delgados, Travis, Trashcan Sinatras) engineering. Other players included
brothers Brian and Jim McEwan and Stuart Kidd (all BMX Bandits / contributors
to many Scottish indie bands and acts). The recording was emotional;
the results were incredible with songs written from the heart, full
of poignancy, purity and reflecting the life of this wandering minstrel.
At their core is a brutal honesty, of someone writing in a way that
is unaffected by trends. Being half Scottish (his mother was from
Broughty Ferry) this was only his second visit to Scotland, the first
had been when he'd come up to play just a few months earlier. In a
way he'd come full circle and Garrie described this intense recording
weekend in January 2008 as the best musical experience of his life.
Listening to the songs one can hear just why...

Gentle People, The
Plastic City
PS, SPAIN LIMITED EDITION 525 COPIES. GENTLE PEOPLE vocalist Dougee
Dimensional classifies "Plastic city" as a "hard-hitting
postmillennial groove espousing the beauty of plastic surgery, collagen,
and a little tuck behind the ear. 'You love the knife, it made your
life, OH YEAH!'," while "Naughty Nauga" extols the
virtues of a mischievous unidentified space creature..." Formed
out of a nascent art collective of musicians, graphic designers, and
gadabouts, THE GENTLE PEOPLE first offered up their unique style of
subversive lounge music upon their arrival on the London music scene
in 1993. Immediately garnering the interest of APHEX TWIN's electronica
pioneer Richard D. James, THE GENTLE PEOPLE were kindly asked if they
would issue their music on James' Rephlex Records. The band's first
EP, "Journey", was released in 1994 to much critical acclaim,
and its success would help foster a whole new genre of lounge "chill-out"
music which is, still today in 2006, the soundtrack for hipsters throughout
the globe, played in funky shops, restaurants, and chic bars forevermore.
After a second hit EP ("Emotion heater"), the band released
its first full length album "Soundtracks for living", (The
disc was named Mixmag's LP of the month for January 1997). Three years
later, riding the wave of their single "Groovin' with you",
THE GENTLE PEOPLE reigned in the new millennium with their sophomore
album "Simply faboo". Meshing lush dreamy vocals and strings
with quirky electro and disco beats, the techno bubblegum feel of
"Simply faboo" instantly became the pick of many hip sophisticates
around the globe. In the years since Faboo, music from THE GENTLE
PEOPLE has been featured on numerous chill-out compilations, including
the legendary Cafe Del Mar, Big Chill, Radio Nova, and Danny Tenaglia's
Back To Mine series. Tracks have also been featured on a variety of
BBC television shows and in advertisements for Axe Deodorant and Kraft
Cheese. Most recently, THE GENTLE PEOPLE have released a series of
iTunes exclusive Compilation LP's and ep's "Galactic Confections"
and " I love THE GENTLE PEOPLE" feature unreleased, new
material, and remixes from some of the bands favorite musicians. THE
GENTLE PEOPLE's unique "Glamour Pop" sound has been internationally
celebrated and has led to remixes for Japan's PIZZICATO 5 and Towa
Tei (DEEE-LITE), as well as guest appearances on releases by the FANTASTIC
PLASTIC MACHINE and MANSFIELD. Their works have also been remixed
by the likes of APHEX TWIN and Luke Vibert, and most recently, by
Eighteenth Street Lounge's recording artist URSULA 1000 and Nacional
Records' THE PINKER TONES. THE GENTLE PEOPLE's celebrated live performances
have been staged in such evocative venues as Berlin's Templehof Airport
and even the fountains of London's Centrepoint Building, where a "gentle
cocktail pool party" was held during the filming of the video
for the "Simply faboo" track "Shopping world."
Most recently, THE GENTLE PEOPLE found themselves in Russia performing
at "Solyanka", Moscow's newest and swankiest nightclub.
The band has also supported Japanese recording icon CORNELIUS, graced
the main stage at the Sonar Music Festival in Barcelona, and appeared
on the BBC's cult music show Beat Room.

Parplar
PS, US LARKIN GRIMM is a force of nature, a self-made woman w/ an
elemental voice from somewhere under the earth. Depending on her mood,
she moans like a woman-in-full, wails like a banshee, or coos like
a crazed little girl. Born 26 years ago in Memphis, TN, to hippie
devotees of the religious cult The Holy Order Of MANS, raised by multiple
"parents" in the commune environment of the cult until age
6, she went on to study at Yale & has since become an international
traveling nomad. The whole time she naturally developed into a gifted
singer, fingerpicker, & multi-instrumentalist. Eventually, she
was signed w/ YOUNG GOD Records & her album debut was co-produced
by MICHAEL GIRA. This contains stellar vocal performances of songs
that are soulful, whimsical, sensual, & bizarre. The production
is as varied & unpredictable as Grimm herself. Guest musicians
incl. Young God's new luminaries Fire on Fire, members of Boston's
Beat Circus, Angels of Light & Old Time Relijun.

Group Inerane
Guitars From Agadez
PS, US By popular demand, this is the CD reissue of the 2nd Sublime
Frequencies vinyl release (Fthree qLuTeDn LcPie srelease sold out
almost immediately upon release in 2007). GROUP INERANE is the now
sound of the Tuareg Guitar Revolution sweeping across the Sahara Desert
& inspired by the rebel musicians that started this music as a
political weapon used to communicate from the Libyan Refugee camps
in the 1980s and 1990s. Spearheaded by the enigmatic guitar hero Bibi
Ahmed, the group has been together for several years & carries
the rich tradition of Tamachek guitar songs for another generation.
These 10 trks are a combination of amplified roots rock, blues, &
folk in the local Tuareg styles, at times entering into full-on electric
guitar psychedelia. Performed w/ 2 electric guitars, drum kit &
a chorus of vocalists. All captured live in the city of Agadez in
the Republic of Niger. The group was also feat. in the DVD 'Niger:

Drunk by Noon/Blizzard
PS, US First CTR 7" single for Brett and Rennie after all these

"Odessa" (1995), that has been covered by ANDREW BIRD, CERYS
MATTHEWS (CATATONIA), SALLY TIMMS & JON LANGFORD (MEKONS), THE
SADIES, and NORA O'CONNOR. A few years back it even landed on the
iTunes Celebrity Playlist for the character Jim Halpert of The Office
& continues to be their largest selling digital single by far
month after month. Side AA's "The Blizzard" is their EXCLUSIVE,
sublime cover of the 1964 Jim Reeves countrypolitan classic. A sad,

BOB WESTON (Shellac). The rollicking San Francisco quintet's sound
is a bit too wily & scrambled to pigeonhole as any one type of
honk. Forward thinkers might tag 'em as panic-skiffle, combining the
cunning & menace of compadres such as Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments

Eco, Arches & Eras
PS, US 2nd album from this Norwegian trio, which is the follow-up
to their highly-acclaimed 2006 release. In general, the HUNTSVILLE
project contrasts sharply with their other collaborations/projects,
& reveals a quite different, more groove-based approach w/ strong
elements of composition & a curiosity to investigate country music,
electronic music, as well as Feldman, Cage, drone & folk music.
The 2nd CD is a recording from the concert they did w/ Nels Cline
& Glenn Kotche (from Wilco) at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival in
'07. The group's multi-instrumentalism means that this is no conventional
guitar/bass/drums trio - but w/ all players indulging in idiosyncratic
devices, it's almost impossible to know who's producing what hauntingly
unusual or strangely beautiful sound.

Ito, Hidenobu
Assemblage Funk
PS, JAPAN The innovator of the Japanese electronics scene drops his
new album. He's also active in the minimal house scene world-widely
but with this album, he uses 80's soul and funk elements and stirs
up with his technical cut-ups to produce splendid sweet break beats
music. Hidenobu produces music from the 90s and has released his 1st
album on NS-Com (1999), and his 2nd on Flyrec (2002). After that he
made two albums on his own Elegantdisc label and lead the domestic
electronica/break beats scene from there. Assemblage Funk is his 5th
album, which we have all waited for. He swallows 80's soul, R&B,
disco and even hard rock music and covers it with sour & tender
melodies of the synthesizers. The break beats are made up of his cut-up
techniques derived from his long career that gives the piece the original
funk sound appealing enough to not only break beats fans but to Balearic
disco house fans and ghetto beats manias! And what more to watch out
is the party killer tune "Paris Tokyo Connection" featuring
the great rapper of TTC, The Cuizinier!! The artwork drawings are
written by NA2ME, a spirited female artist.

bumps against a marching percussion in "Pain." So, what's

Joe E
Love Got In My Way
PS, US A grandly groovy 70s discovery -- and long lost bit of mid-decade
lounge sweetness with a melancholy underbelly from Joe E Neubauer
-- a South Florida construction work, part time stock car racer, and
nightclub singer! Love Got In My Way is ripe with blue eyed/polyester
suit soul, post Nashville Sound era lushness, and the kind of endearing,
boozy lounge songcraft that with one good stroke of luck could have
gotten this guy into far greener pastures. Joe takes his craft seriously,
but still seems the having a great ol' time out front on the tunes
with his rich, charismatic vocals. The record was recorded at Ft Lauderdale's
SRS International Recording Studios in 1974, which saw a pretty sizable
number of famous artists in those days, and the production is quite
elaborate -- with big string arrangements, lots of horns, female backing
vocals, and all kinds of classy 70s sounds. Comes with a thick booklet
of notes & photos, which make for a pretty fascinating story,
but the songs and performance of the should-be famous Joe E are more
than worth checking out! Titles include "Come On Sign",
"Thinkin' About Me, Thinkin' About You", "Love Is Just

Jonquil
Whistle Low
PS, SPAIN Hailing from the musical city of Oxford, Jonquil have had
a very prolific two years of existence that has resulted in two full
length albums, both on Try Harder Records (Foals, Blood Red Shoes),
and two self-released tour CDRs. Numbering six members and a far greater
number of instruments (the usual guitar bass and drums plus accordion,
flute, violin, trumpet, melodica, piano, organ...) Jonquil have moved
on significantly from the noise-tinged avant-folk of their debut,
Sunny Casinos. This new Mini-CD, the first non-album release of the
band, sees Jonquil reinventing themselves as re-inventors of pop music,
with moments of sublime melodicism set against dense polyrhythms that
call to mind Animal Collective, Built to Spill, early Arcade Fire
or Akron/Family, and some camp-side gathering, incorporating doo-wop,
party horn arrangements and gentle balladry. "Whistle Low"
was recorded initially by front-man Hugo Manuel in his bedroom and
finished with the rest of the band over a two week period at the end
of 2007, hot on the heels of their much lauded second album, Lions,
which received glowing reviews in publications such as the Wire and
Rock Sound as well as many of the world's most influential blogs such
as 'My Old Kentucky Home', 'La Blogotheque' and 'Nothing But Green

Kirschner, Kenneth
Filaments & Voids
PS, US A subdued chord, and a subsequent quiet. A hovering drone,
followed by a compelling absence of sound. True to its title, Filaments
& Voids is comprised predominantly by one or the other: by carefully
constructed audio of lingering delicacy or by singular silences of
ambiguous depth. Over the course of two discs and nearly two and a
half hours of music, composer Kenneth Kirschner focuses the listener's
attention on the silence inherent in his sounds, and the sounds implicit
in silence. Like the night sky evoked by the album's title, the music
heard on Filaments & Voids is a broad and dark space inhabited
by dispersed and luminous materials. Filaments & Voids is a 2-CD
collection of Kenneth Kirschner's music featuring liner notes by Disquiet.com's
Marc Weidenbaum and photography by Taylor Deupree. Kenneth Kirschner
was born in 1970 and lives in New York City; he releases his music
freely online through his website, kennethkirschner.com. His work
is also available on CDs such as September 19, 1998 et al. (12k, 2003)
and Three Compositions (Sirr, 2006); his most recent release is May

Klaus & Kinski
Tu Hoguera Está Ardiendo
PS, SPAIN The début album of Klaus & Kinski, the group
led by Álex and Marina, settled in Murcia and recently winners
of the Lemon Pop Festival demo contest. Beyond its sarcastic meaning,
"Tu hoguera está ardiendo" ("Your bonfire is
on fire") is a stunning and full of nuances record, that catches
the attention of the listener from the beginning to the end, through
its 14 songs (more than an hour long), a perfect description of the
wide range of possibilities their repertory has. An album that, far
from lengthy, turns out to be fascinating, like a path with plenty
of different landscapes they travel, however, as if it were the most
natural thing in the world. Klaus & Kinski has the strange ability
of pique the curiosity of everyone who notices them for the first
time. And that is because both their name and songs titles, and now,
the album title too, contribute to create that feeling. A calling
that no matter the way it comes, never stays there. Because what really
catch you from Klaus & Kinski is what is inside: their personality,
their idiosyncrasy, and, above all, their songs. Compositions so full
of emotions, common sense and honesty they may seem surprising, full
of paths we have all walked around, that they come to look like maps.
All that thanks to a personal mix of ingenuity and talent that flood
their repertory, mainly pop, with delicacy to a lot of common styles,
differing them from the rest of the indie Spanish bands. Like Marina
says, who, when it comes to digression, describes as nobody does,
"We like to be eclectic (that's what you say when you have no
style or personality) covering from bolero to electronic music, bossa-nova,
country-folk, melodic Italian songs from the 70s, 80s style and (kind
of) standard indie music. We are influenced by My Bloody Valentine
or Stereolab but we don't feel distant from The Beatles and The Panchos.
Even sometimes people have related us with Shoegazer for our chronic
nerve and grace on stage, creating a perfect expressive communication
with our feet". The lyrics (signed by Álex, of course)
and Marina's delightful singing style deserve separate remark. Like
Marina herself tells, "Alejandro likes to hear what the songs
say in my little voice." From the different themes they deal
with, to the way the manage the stories they tell us, through their
metaphors, the lyrics represents a main factor when it comes to explain
the style of Klaus & Kinski. "Tu hoguera está ardiendo"
collects a large part of the known repertory of this band from Murcia
through their demos, and provides with two new songs composed for
the occasion: "El Cristo del perdón", opening the
album, and "Crucifixión, la solución". All
of them recorded at the Arturo Vaquero's Abrigueiro Studio with the
production of Álex Martínez, the real Klaus & Kinski
jack-of-all-trades, who previously had composed, orchestrated and
edited all the songs, combining real instruments (electric, acoustic,
classic and bass guitars, synthesizers, percussion instruments, chimes,
harmonicas from 1 euro shops...) with sampled instrument, and the
inestimable collaboration of Daniel (guitar), Paco (bass guitar),
Leandro (keyboards), all of them Martínez, and, of course,
with the distinct voice of Marina Gómez Carruthers.

Lorna
Writing Down Things To Say
PS, US Signposts: Mojave 3, American Analog Set, Coastal, The Blue
Nile. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to present WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY,
the third album by Nottingham, England's orchestral pop songsmiths
LORNA. The quartet follow up their highly acclaimed 2005 record STATIC
PATTERNS AND SOUVENIRS with another rare work that eschews convenient
classification - embracing an expansive sonic palette without sounding
eclectic (in no small part due to the dozens of instruments the band
is able to skillfully perform and weave into the record's nine compositions).
LORNA tours folk, old-time country, chamber pop, post-rock, and even
avant-lounge on WRITNG DOWN THINGS TO SAY. But the genius of LORNA
lies in the masterful (husband and wife) songwriting team of Mark
Rolfe and Sharon Cohen-Rolfe. The duo have created an album unified
in theme and texture by seamlessly cross-pollinating their songs with
traces of all these musical genres - deftly bringing pedal steel,
string quartets, harmonicas, vintage keyboards, and woodwind and brass
arrangements into the fold - not to mention their sumptuous vocal
harmonies. "Not In My Lighthouse" bustles with a warm bed
of keyboards, on top of which Rolfe's gentle vocals casually flirt
with alternating clarinet and flute melodies. This patient courtship
builds to yield a wistfulness and exquisiteness once realized by Scotland's
romantic perfectionists THE BLUE NILE. On "Think (Let Tomorrow
Bee)" Sharon Cohen-Rolfe's voice is undressed to its poignant
core - sheltered only by occasional strings and sparse acoustic guitar.
The song is a stark interpretation of the 1993 SEBADOH composition
- much in the way Ivo's THIS MORTAL COIL project breathed a fresh
new atmosphere into the music of TIM BUCKLEY and ROY HARPER. "(I
Wish I Knew) How to Build a House" employs a 7/8 meter to daringly
bridge the intersection of post-rock and avant-lounge - perhaps having
a conversation with AMERICAN ANALOG SET and STEREOLAB along the way.
WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY is a record that rewards multiple listens,
as the sundry instruments that are subtly and cleverly woven into
the rich fabric of LORNA's songwriting surface and bloom.

Los Soberanos
Fiesta Sin Fin
PS, SPAIN Many are the ensembles who try their take on the sound of
modern grooves, but unfortunately very few really devote their time
to find a refreshing and cheerful style. After a twelve-year uninterrupted
career, LOS SOBERANOS, ultimate representatives of the party lifestyle,
are still proud bearers of the flag of fun. For all these years, they've
given heart and soul to cover other bands' hits and to recover the
cream of Sixties music. "¡Fiesta sin fin!" their new
album, brings a new step forward, including five infectious tunes
of their own that will leave no one indifferent: "Guapa",
"Pero te quiero", "Un hombre tranquilo", "La,
La, La" (not to be mistaken with the Eurovision tune by Massiel)
and "Siroco". The rest of the songs in the record, nine
dynamic covers, frankly showing off their complete lack of pretentiousness
and how they love to mess about. We find LOS SOBERANOS taking Manolo
Díaz for a few drinks ("Bibí"), daringly having
their take on a ballad by the great Rafael Martos "Raphael"
("Estuve enamorado"), paying tribute to their beloved BRINCOS
("Pareces gitana"), plunging headlong into the waters with
MICKY Y LOS TONYS (No sé nadar"), vindicating LOS PASOS
("Nací de pie"), reminding us of a forceful tune
by LOS HURACANES ("El calcetín"), deciding on Italian
tonalities ("Il paradiso" by Patty Bravo and "Si chiama
Maria" by the essential Pino Donnagio) and crossing the Pond
together with Venezuelan band LOS SUPERSÓNICOS (¿Por

Meyer, Bob
Threefold Return
PS, UK Bridging the great divide from South London to the Deep South,
Bob Meyer is one of those individuals who, while showing no desire
to crave the spotlight, assimilate and homage's his influences to
emerge with statements of unadorned and unrelenting honesty. Sounding
like they could be recorded in your front room, the songs on his second
album, Threefold Return, intimately straddle anyone from Nick Drake
to Blind Willie Johnson but what shines through is the man's honest
and restless, questing musical passion. Bob's also a shit-hot guitar
player, first picking up the instrument at the age of ten courtesy
of his older brother, who built them. Maybe put off by his own left-handedness,
Bob didn't touch a guitar again until the age of 31when he did a Hendrix
by turning the instrument upside down along with his teach yourself
handbook. Within a month he was writing songs, later recording his
2006 debut album All This Is That in one afternoon at the Chocolate
Box in Wood Green - all tracks first takes with no overdubs. AmericanaUK
described the album as, "Primordial blues, tough and dirty, that
harks back to Robert Johnson's template and at times comes close to
being as powerful. Meyer has a real feel for the music and delivers
real blues in a classic style." Guardian Unlimited called Bob,
"an extraordinarily talented acoustic blues guitarist, a man
who sings like his heart is buried in a Mississippi swamps".
Although the album didn't catapult him into a position to give up
his day job as a truck-driver it paved the way for a second outing
which throws out an uncanny timeline with America's 60s troubadours
lashed with the stark guitar styling of the blues musicians he reveres,
particularly Blind Gary Davies, Leadbelly and Son House. This blues
fixation surfaces on tracks like Tilt and the stridently atmospheric
I'm A Fool. Southwark Bridge recalls the drowsy observations of Nick
Drake while As She Flows and When I'm Gone recall Greenwich Village
singer-songwriters like the Tim Rose and Hardin. The most enthralling
excursions are instrumentals like Rollin' Part 3 and stunning Fast
River Of No Return which recall nobody so much as the late John Fahey,
the mysterious American genius who revolutionized the six string steel
guitar in the early 60s, inspiring names like Leo Kottke and Robbie
Basho to develop their own individual styles.

PS, US Audio Dregs is pleased to announce the release of a longtime
favorite from Bristol UK, Minotaur Shock; the musical side of David
Edwards. There are currently 3 albums by him available, a compilation
of old hits and some EPs out there, but this is his first stateside
release now available on Compact Disc! How cool is that? "I'd
describe Amateur Dramatics as school band meets Italo meets chamber
music rubbing up on electro with a slice of acid, a sprinkling of
minimalism and a short attention span. It's got saxophones, violins,
clarinets and the insides of my grandma's mini-piano on it. It was
influenced by many things, notably Fleetwood Mac, Detroit techno,
Frank Zappa, Cluster, Andrew Poppy, Bowie, Italo house, Glass/Reich,
Gentle Giant and Todd Rundgren. It was all written, arranged, recorded
and produced by me mostly at home (occasionally in other people's
houses). All instruments were done by me except clarinet, flute and
saxophone which were played by the wonderful Emily Wakefield, and
violin which was played by the excellent James Underwood of the Iskra
String Quartet. Anna-Lynne Williams of Lotte Kestner provided vocals
for 'This Plane Is Going To Fall'." -David Edwards, June 2008

Monsere, Annelies
Somewhere Someone
PS, BELGIUM Limited to 185. All copies hand-numbered, hand-stamped
and have handwritten liner notes by Annelies. "Somewhere someone"
consists of 6 previously unreleased songs. Five out of six are brand
new and written right after recording "marit" - Annelies'
second yet to be released full length. One was written a long time
ago for her band Zent One, but, completely reworked for this release.
She recorded these songs over a short period of time in 2008 on an
eight track cassette recorder at home. This EP features a Hammond
organ for the first time. This instrument led to new approaches in
songwriting. This release deviates clearly from previous releases,
with a darker and harsher sound. Lyrically, these songs all touch
the theme of absence, though this was not a conscious starting point.
About Annelies Monseré: Annelies Monseré is a multi-instrumentalist
from Gent, Belgium. Her debut record came out in 2005 on Bluesanct
records. During a four-year stay in the Netherlands, she toured Europe
and the US and played on festivals like Tanned Tin and Primaverasound,
leading to high expectations for her second record, due for release
later. In the meantime, she has released several well received collaborations,
with diverse artists as Jessica Bailiff, dREKKa and Birch Book.

Music Lovers, The
MasculineFeminine
PS, US 'Masculine Feminine' is the third long-playing record from
acclaimed San Francisco-based pop-sophisticates The Music Lovers and
the pinnacle of their artistic endeavors. The Music Lovers are led
by transplanted Englishman songwriter Matthew Edwards. Edwards refers
to 'Masculine Feminine' as his own personal 'Day of the Locust', a
travelogue through the underbelly of the almost-famous doyens of LA
and San Francisco. Like a toxic Graham Greene on a tear, Edwards speaks
of motels, love-affairs, addictions, vamps and ingénues, pausing
on occasion to look back on a half remembered England and wonder what
went wrong (or right)? These are desperate songs born of need and
frustration, but never dreary, never self-pitying. Rather, they show
a formidable spirit of abandon - an abandon to the pop aesthetic;
saddling the darkest sensibilities and wickedest proclivities to the
sweetest pop-song frame-works. The music? The girl-group sound on
a dreary Tuesday morning in 1976... quietly exultant on a radio in
Birmingham. Serge and Stax and The Go-Betweens and Dusty and Lerner
and Lowe, dammit! If David Goodis had written lyrics for Carole King
they might have sounded a little like this record. Yes, they are all
'love songs' but not only to people, but places, states of mind and
to divine release. 'Masculine Feminine' is battered, inebriate, sensual
and defiantly and unfashionably romantic! Praise for The Music Lovers:
"Gin-spritzed string arrangements and cocktail-bar melancholy,
[that comes] off like a Rat Pack version of Lloyd Cole." - WORD
"Hints of '60s AM-radio fodder regularly poke through the creamy,
dreamy layers of piano, acoustic guitar, concertina, strings and mellotron,
and the results are seductive." - MAGNET "The Music Lovers
sound is lush and voluptuous, making me think of clouds and rain,
strings and guitars, both orchestral and earthy, akin to the sublime
pleasure of holding your head in my lap, oh my beautiful one."

Nerves, The
One Way Ticket
PS, US "Their bare, skeletal sound made every lick seem memorable.
They excelled in energy.
People compared them to the early Beatles or the Dave Clark Five."
- Kenneth Funsten.
Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer
PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk
pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one
of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their
classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition
which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from
BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy
rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing
fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits,
the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of
the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with
the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical
Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque
in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The
Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's
break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS,
and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively.
Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK
LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album
in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER
CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc
2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for
the first time ever by the three band members, features the band's
1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and
previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with
notes and photos. The CD is a Digipack. Track listing : 1. One Way

New Order
Brotherhood [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1986
album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. BROTHERHOOD
is a document of growth for New Order's ever-expanding sonic landscape.
Packaged in the stark, utilitarian style that was the Factory label's
trademark, the album belies its minimalist presentation with a sprawling,
intricately crafted collection of pop gems, inspiringly diverse, yet
uniformly infused with the band's trademark sincerity and off-kilter
melodic sense. The album opens with the deceptively straight drum
hits of "Paradise", which quickly adopts an intense double-tracked
vocal and with it, an air of danger that offsets its soaring melody.
New Order developed into masters of intellectually stimulating dance
music, an elusive combination of qualities. The album's biggest hit
"Bizarre Love Triangle" exemplifies this rare mixture--atop
a throbbing, heavily sequenced dance beat is played out a drama complete
with consistently engaging musical shifts, dramatic lyrical turns,
and a chorus that's instantly memorable and nothing short of gorgeous.
The wistful vulnerability of "All Day Long" dissolves into
a sprawling, regal affair and the supremely sweet "Every Little
Counts" show yet another dimension to New Order's sonic richness.

New Order
Movement [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1981
album, includes 10 non-album singles, B-sides and remixes, including
their debut singles/EP. After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's
Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose
gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's
cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT
finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past.
Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves
deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist
Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers.
From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening
moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End", MOVEMENT boldly
states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid
agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at
times, the resemblance is alarming, but MOVEMENT is the sound of Sumner
finding his voice. The spacey synth-pop of "The Him" foreshadows
the sound New Order was to slowly develop, as Sumner became more comfortable
with the upper reaches of his vocal range. Dynamic play abounds--the
existentialist drone of "Truth" gives way to a crushing,
chaotic guitar wail, while the intense, revealingly named "Doubts
Even Here" slowly erupts beneath a disturbing double-vocal, stressing
the burgeoning diversity of this legendary band in the making. Also
similarly re-issued: Power Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood
and Technique.

album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. New
Order found its voice on the group's sophomore effort, POWER, CORRUPTION

Silent Face" and "Age Of Consent." The bonus disc includes
"Blue Monday" and its b-side "The Beach," which
were released exclusively as a single in the U.K., but included on
the U.S. version of Power, Corruption & Lies. The single became

Low Life [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1985
album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. With
LOW-LIFE, New Order truly hit their stride with their highly individual
combination of infectious rhythms, inventive composition and performances
full of conviction. The vulnerable lyrics and earnest delivery of
Bernard Sumner are in top form; his voice is at last a completely
developed instrument, clear and comfortable as it wraps itself around
such memorable tracks as the opening "Love Vigilantes",
a solid, purely guitar-driven narrative. Following immediately and
in sharp contrast is LOW LIFE's biggest success, "The Perfect
Kiss", a sequencer-fueled dance classic which boasts what is
undoubtedly pop music's only frog sample solo. "Sunrise"
has an epic feel, filled with driving leads and Sumner's signature
scratchy, frenetic rhythm playing. The album takes a serene turn on
"Elegia", a beautiful, airy composition of echoey guitar
lines and swirling synth textures. Also similarly re-issued: Movement,
Power Corruption & Lies, Brotherhood and Technique.

The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the
Present
PS, US The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk
to the Present, by Scott Plagenhoef and Ryan Schreiber. Pitchfork
offers up their take on the 500 best songs of the past three decades.
Focusing on indie rock (Arcade Fire, The Shins), hip hop (Public Enemy,
Jay-Z), electronic (Daft Punk, Boards of Canada), pop (Madonna, Justin
Timberlake), metal (Metallica, Boris), and experimental underground
music (Suicide, Boredoms), it features all-new essays and reviews
written with the sharp wit and insight for which the site is known.
Kicking it off in 1977 with the birth of punk and independent music,
The Pitchfork 500 runs chronologically, with each chapter representing
a distinct period and offering a narrative of how the musical landscape
of the day influenced its artists. The book opens with David Bowie,
Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk, and Brian Eno, the "art-rock godfathers"
who set the tone and tenor for the next thirty years, and wraps up
in the present, when bands connect with new audiences through social
networking sites and prime-time TV placements -- and when a single
mp3 can turn a niche indie artist into a global sensation. Sidebars
like "Yacht Rock," "Runaway Trainwrecks," "Nanofads,"
and "Career Killers" call out some far-from-classic musical
trends and identify the guiltiest offenders. Softcover, 224 pages.

Pleasant Dreams
Podría Ser Hoy
PS, SPAIN Despite being young, Spanish band PLEASANT DREAMS have been
working towards their debut album for several years. Honing their
songs and playing sporadic word of mouth gigs they sent out demo after
demo before a chance encounter between the band and Green Ufos on
MySpace convinced the label that they had discovered one of the Spanish
music scene's brightest hopes for the future. Led by Juanjo Clausell,
the band plays a gorgeous style of pop influenced by bands like Belle
& Sebastian, The Ladybug Transistor, Norkfolk & Western, and
Bright Eyes. Singing in their native language, they are being favorably
compared in the press to influential and leading artists in the Spanish
scene including Family, La Buena Vida, Lori Meyers, Nacho Vegas or
Refree. The songs by PLEASANT DREAMS are full of arrangements (cellos,
violins, violas, trumpets,...) but they are essentially catchy pop
gems that immediately lodge themselves in your head. Some of the songs
are positive and "up" whilst others reflect the difficulties
of being a young pop lover fighting against the tide of this modern
society with its uniform music, dress, clubs, etc. Despite being a
debut album, it has great maturity and all the songs are truly memorable.
Only one remains from the original demos that the label heard, all
the rest being new material specially written for the album. Produced
by Spanish production guru Paco Loco, the artwork of the album is
by Vanesa Zafra, who has also worked for the Lori Meyers. The album
comes in an attractive digipack.

beats freely with a refreshing taste, After their more break-beaty
1st album "ROM", Roberto has collaborated with Prefuse 73
and such and delivers this 2nd full album. This 2nd album entitled
"Foot Signal" is a beautiful example of organizing a minimal
band in a modern sense - Multi performances of acoustic and electronics
including the laptops as a duo is perfectly accomplished here. The
beat approaches evolved from projects like Epstein and Boom &
birds, the duo's musical roots; guitar sounds and a bit strange yet
charming tones from the laptops chaining almost non-stop. The ensemble
which is a mere adaptations of the "post-rock method" and
the energetic flow of the instrumental beat music weaves into fresh,
developing and creative sounds. You can also feel the warm psychedelia
which you could hear on Prefuse 73's "Preparations / Interregnums".

beyond. These lads have captivated DJs and dancefloors around the
world with their remarkable ability to construct an uplifting, emotive
mood fuelled by the pulse of the unprejudiced, techy beat. This puts
forward a fantastic cluster of dimension & depth to an overpopulated
world of disposable, faceless music that exists in minimal techno
currently. Here they invited some live musicians capturing a classic
deep house sound, while pursuing a more scientific & modern approach
& still worshipping the beauty & spirituality of the old school.

Secret Society, The
I Am Becoming What I Hate the Most
PS, SPAIN Three years have passed since Sad Boys Dance When No One's
Watching, the first album from The Secret Society, came out. That
was an important work for Pepo M. (actually the only permanent member
behind this changing society that has been visited randomly by people
like Frank Rudow of Manta Ray and JR, or Remate, and that it's always
ready to admit submissions) for several reasons: it ended up being
the Best Spanish Album of 2005 for Go! one of the most important music
magazines in Spain, ahead of people like Nacho Vegas, Enrique Morente
or Sr Chinarro; it obtained really surprising and moving reviews on
international magazines like Rolling Stone, Les Inrockuptibles, Uncut,
Rif Raf, as well as on fanzines that document the cultural underground;
it made thousands of miles playing, Pepo alone or with their long
time mates Andrés Perruca on drums and Javier Vicente on guitar,
lapsteel and piano; together they visited several times the most important
cities in Spain, they visited Portugal, Austria, Russia, France or
Belgium; they shared vans and stages with bands like Arab Strap, Xiu
Xiu, Dominique A, Magnolia Electric Co., Tara Jane O'Neil, Destroyer,
or Frog Eyes to name a few; they played at important festivals such
as Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, FIB at Benicassim, Tanned
Tin, Avant Festival in Moscow or South Pop Festival. This is October
2008 and The Secret Society has their new ammunition ready to launch,
hidden in one of those long and intriguing names so beloved by Pepo:
I Am Becoming What I Hate the Most. So explicit, so fast: 10 songs
in 35 minutes. Be ready those who have to be ready because this album
is not, by any means, another album. It is not a sequel. It is not
an easy work. It is not a folk album. This is not an adult album,
not a fussy album, not a self-assuring album. I Am Becoming What I
Hate the Most is an album that goes way beyond. It has rage, obscurity,
sadness, doubts; it is winter and summer all together. It's really
shocking to find a record with so many details in so few minutes.
It is also a surprise: five out of ten songs are sung in Spanish,
hidden under English titles. A way of writing without impostures,
direct and true. Probably the best way for Pepo to join with honors
in the Spanish singer- songwriters club that started writing in English
before they find the guts to express themselves I their native tongue.
In this transition to normalize its own vision of music, The Secret
Society hands this unique gift to us. And I Am Becoming What I Hate
the Most is such an honest album that listening to it makes you feel
dirty and, no doubt about it, will bring Pepo and his mates to places
they still don't know; they will play again with bands they love,
and they will meet again a bunch of people, emotions and satisfactions.
All with a sense of unimportance and true love: just like the most
important things in life, the ones that last forever.

Soccer Committee & Machinefabriek
Draw
PS, BELGIUM Machinefabriek has joined forces with Soccer Committee's
Mariska Baars on a multitude of previous albums and EPs, but nothing
has come close to the sheer force of "Drawn." Baars' bare-bones
songs of lament and longing are taken apart and reassembled by Zuydervelt's
capable hands. The result is stunning. "Drawn" skirts the
line between fractured folk music and drone, never settling into one
facade. Through Zuydervelt's production work, "Drawn" sounds
like a dusty, unearthed gem found tucked away in the darkest reaches
of an abandoned basement. This is music that is timeless. Gentle acoustic
guitar plucks and soothing harmonium tones work magically to highlight
the brightest star on the album: Baars' fragile, beautiful voice.
She is in magnificent form, pulling emotions from the depths. Not
to be overlooked are the flickering samples of Franz Hautzinger's
mournful trumpet. This is music for the ages. Baars & Zuydervelt
have made a magnificent album that will leave its mark and haunt you
long after it ends. It really doesn't get much better. About Soccer
Committee: Soccer Committee likes the act of endlessly zooming in
on a particular sound and to follow its path to the point where it
becomes totally inaudible. Her debut album 'sC' came out out morc
in may 2007. About Machinefabriek: Machinefabriek makes electronic
(nonlaptop) music ranging from drones to melodica songs and from classical
ambient to harsh feedback noise. Rutger was called one of the most
interesting new experimental musicians by the Wire magazine and with
60+ releases in just a few years, is definitely one of the most prolific
ones.

Southern Arts Society
Burning Sound
PS, SPAIN After a bedroom produced debut album released in 2005, SOUTHERN
ARTS SOCIETY, the project of ex A Popular History of Signs leader
Andy Jarman, has gradually developed into a stable band with four
established members. This maturing process has been a key element
in creating an organic sound which has led to what is undoubtedly
the best album in a personal musical adventure going back over two
decades. Apart from the fact that the album includes guest vocals
by Gary Olson from The Ladybug Transistor, Roger Quigley from The
Montgolfier Brothers / At Swim Two Birds, and French chanteuse Françoiz
Breut, it is quite simply a superb collection of songs. Tindersticks,
the Go Betweens, Wilco, Deus, Nick Cave, Divine Comedy, Calexico,
Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra... All these names could be traced
in the music of this Londoner based in Seville (Spain) and his band.
The album has a cool stylish sound, mixing guitars, piano, and strings
with hints of electronica. There are flashes of intensity that explode
in songs such as Satellites and Shooting Stars which features Spanish
production guru Paco Loco on typically untamed guitar. The songs unfold
with one hit following another. Just the demo version of opener "The
Window" has been played repeatedly on Spanish national radio.
Andy has never sung better whilst the rich tones of Roger Quigley
captivate the listener on "Religion", which is immediately
followed by the atmospheric trumpet arrangements of Passing Through.
"The Fall" features the wonderfully evocative voice of reclusive
Spanish singer Muni from The Maddening Flames. Another highlight in
the middle of the album is French chanteuse Françoiz Breut
singing Landlocked Sailor, a story of mariners from the bankrupt Russian
fishing fleets who are marooned in the Canary Islands. Next comes
the powerful of "Satellites and Shooting Stars", followed
by the immediately catchy groove of "This Town". Finally,
to close the album, the majestic baritone of The Ladybug Transistor
frontman Gary Olson singing "Day in September". Then it's
back to the beginning to play the album once more, because you'll
need to listen to these fantastic songs time and time again. The cover
of "Burning Sand" is inspired by the Republican propaganda
posters from the Spanish Civil War, and reflects Andy's fascination
with this tragic but emotive time in our history.

Speedmarket Avenue
Don't Fall In Love
PS, SPAIN Red vinyl. LIMITED EDITION 725 COPIES. "Don't fall
in love" is the second single taken from "Way Better Now,"
the second full-length album of SPEEDMARKET AVENUE. The self-titled
and previous released song of the album has turned itself into a total
international indie-pop hit. Steve Lamacq chose this tune as single
of the week on his BBC program and music journalists riddled the album
with praise as it counted on the magic and wisdom of Jari Haapalainen
(Producer of ED HARCOURT, THE BEART QUARTET, THE CONCRETES and CAMERA
OBSCURA among others), although to have such a well-rounded full length,
it is very important to have terrific songs and SPEEDMARKET AVENUE
has plenty of them like the one which is the protagonist of the new
single. "Don't Fall in Love" is an instant classic, a short
traditional song, the perfect pop tune with a contagious verse and
a dazzling chorus. It comes so close to the in love and out-of-love
music of sixties pop groups similar to THE SMITHS, LADYBUG TRANSISTOR,
THE RAW HERBS and the early songs of AZTEC CAMERA. On the B side of
this red special limited edition vinyl is "Dying in Africa,"
a heart-rending, intimate and melancholic cover of the Swedish Italian
disco electro-pop duo NICOLAS MAKELBERGE. Johan Lundin and Arvid Ringborg
were in charge of putting images together for "Don't Fall in
Love" creating a fun video narrating the typical story of a band
playing at the wrong event where they are out of place - a private
party with terrible guests who do not jive well with the group.

Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Vinyl Version! An unpredictable and dramatic "big band
song cycle about science and information", Everything/Everything
is a new departure for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB.
Additionally, whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed
by the sounds of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does
away with them entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an
ensemble dominated by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ,
it features luminaries from both the jazz and experimental classical
music scenes. Whilst this is almost certainly his most pop oriented
release to date, Everything/Everything, as it's name suggests, nds
room for moments of racing Philip Glass minimalism, lop-sided disco,
expressionist cabaret, and even an eery ambient interlude. Lyrically,
the album's concept is "the - good of information" in our
modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology, language and art, sometimes
surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, a weird blur of
fact and action, delivered in Bookish's distinctive English eccentric
vocal. It's only natural that Simon Bookish would want to tackle this
chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish' is the pseudonym of London-based
composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse recent work has included everything
from sound-art installations in Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and
guest spots with Leafcutter John and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and
computer music for contemporary dance at the Royal Opera House to
an acclaimed appearance with the National Theatre as "The Singer"
in Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle".

Bronnt Industries Kapital
Häxan (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25th)
PS, UK The world of horror soundtracks has long been an inspiration
for Bronnt Industries Kapital, the musical project revolving around
Bristol-based composer Guy Bartell, and it is no surprise that Bronnt
should return the favor by delivering a horror soundtrack of its own.
Häxan (1922, dir. Benjamin Christensen) is a fusion film using
dramatization, documentary and animation to explore the themes of
witchcraft and superstition. Met with outrage on its release, it has
since been reappraised as a classic. Bronnt was commissioned to write
a new soundtrack to accompany the film's first release on DVD in Europe
(TVD3758) in 2007, and it is this soundtrack which forms the group's
second album, the follow up to 2005's acclaimed Virtute et Industria.
Much of Häxan was shot at night to enhance the sinister mood
of the film, and Bronnt utilized a similar schedule to evoke the awe
of the Sabbat. The soundtrack was composed and performed using a wide
range of instrumentation, including clockwork devices, transistor
organs, mellotron, clarinet, guitars, bespoke string instruments,
pianos, tone generators, analog synthesizers and elaborate processing
and manipulation through antique tape machines and plate reverbs.
The resulting scope of the soundtrack is vast, ranging from minimalist
clockwork lullabies to lush orchestral ensemble pieces, heavenly analog
sound collages to hellish electrical miasmas, all imbued with a darkly
hypnagogic ambiance worthy of Christensen's strange world populated
by mechanical demons and castles in the clouds.

Calder
Lower (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK Calder formed in Iceland when musical instrument maker Lárus
Sigurðsson and Ólafur Josephsson, who is perhaps best known
for his recordings under the alias Stafrænn Hákon, met
and decided to join forces. Their first collaborations resulted in
self-titled five-track album of improvised, experimental instrumentals
that was released through Ólafur's Vogor Recordings and later
picked up by UK indie Unlabel. Lárus' background is in classical
music, having played with various Icelandic musicians and self-released
a handful of solo recordings. His recent album Jarðhörpusálmar
was improvised and recorded using musical instruments that he had
designed and built himself. Ólafur Josephsson has been experimenting
with ambient guitar arrangements under the name Stafrænn Hákon
since 1999. He has released his music through various labels including
his own Vogor Recordings, the Resonant Label and Awkward Silence Recordings,
with the music progressing and becoming increasingly refined since
his debut album Eignas Jeppa in 2001. After the creative success of
Calder's debut, a second album was conceived in 2005 when Lárus
and Ólafur started exchanging ideas, shaping and molding their
music, with the material composed in a truly collaborative way - Lárus
handed Ólafur acoustic melodic ideas and Ólafur added
electronic elements, with tracks gradually acquired shape, depth and
life. With this new music, melody, structure and beats have come more
to the fore, although the beautiful and haunting guitar atmospherics
are still evident, running like a thread through the album. 2008 saw
the completion of this process and the resulting album has been entitled
Lower. The music can perhaps best be described as a fusion of experimental,
ambient, classical and acoustic music.

Flaherty, Paul
Aria Nativa (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US "Aria Nativa" is more than PAUL FLAHERTY'S third
solo saxophone album; it merges rhapsodic avant garde music, patriotic
dream verse, and mortality into a frighteningly pure work of audio,
visual and literary sledge. Recorded during a pair of 2007 performances,
its four pieces capture lifeblood in stunning detail from foot stomps
to gut hollers and crowd roars as Flaherty's free power blues dips
into the well of wretchedness and raises with fists of mirth. It's
the sorta record that splays naked the artist for all: equal parts
wise ass and universal vision. From his early 1970s woodshedding through
a dozen plus albums each with drum buddies Randall Colburne and Chris
Corsano, and collaborators Bill Nace, Wally Shoup and Sunburned Man
of the Hand, Flaherty remains a total wildcat - on and off the alto/tenor
horns. For this LP his massive tonal craft is equally matched by Ken
Hill's gorgeous cover shot of a snow blown grave and "No More
America" - Ken DelPonte's epic poem that spans nearly five decades
and fills the back jacket, framing the atmosphere the music was recorded
under. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for MP3 version of

given moment, reaching bold crescendos of both of dim shimmer and
blinding incandescence. The band make use of projected, self-edited
video footage along with impressive lighting arrangements to form
what it calls, a "full audio visual show", with each song
accompanied by its own video. GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT's marriage of raw
power and delicate beauty has drawn comparisons to the works of like-minded
indie acts Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai. The band has performed
all over the world including sell out shows in Boston, New York, London,
Dublin and Moscow. The upcoming GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT live performances
are listed in the Track Listing column. Updated GIAA news and tour
information will be made available via the GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT web
domains: "beauty and menace... fantastically broad and lush soundscapes...
it's like watching a thunderhead slowly approach from the distance;
dark, towering and fat with tension." - DROWNED IN SOUND "On
Far from Refuge, their third full-length, GIaA ventures even further
into the outer realms, streamlining their sound as if to make it sleeker
for the demands
of deep space flight. A simultaneously gentle and enthralling adventure
upon a star-strewn stage." - DECOY MUSIC "A highlight of
the day for sure, their big sound should have no problem filling the
tiny Knitting Factory tap bar which is where they'll finish their
U.S. tour in NYC tonight" - SXSW Review - brooklynvegan.com

meticulously rendered, moving easily among a wide range of influences,
from early music to folk to psychedelia. Johnson has created luminous

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Beacon from Mars (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)

a thrift-shop front window (bazouki, oud, vina, saz, doumbeg), they
were every bit as multi-hued & subject to change as a telescope
full of bright bits of colored glass. This wildly experimental outfit
pioneered what would become the world-music genre by darting deftly
between rock, folk, blues, Cajun, country, Middle Eastern, good-time
ballads & Eastern European styles, w/ plenty of full-blown psychedelia
on the side.

Kazumasa, Hashimoto
Tokyo Sonata: Original Soundtrack (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, JAPAN They were supposed to be leading a normal life. But something
crept unexpectedly into their lives and turned this family into one
of disharmony. Will there be a day when this family can ring in harmony
again? TOKYO SONATA is a film portraying the typical family of modern
day Japan and is an exploration into a new genre for world-renowned
director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The widely acclaimed film which received
the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2008 Cannes
International Film Festival is also the first film score created by
artist Kazumasa Hashimoto and noble is proud to announce the release
of its original soundtrack. The minimal but heartwarming harmony created
by the mellotron, piano, guitar and noise synchronizes brilliantly
with the film to bring more strength to the world of Kurosawa. In
addition to the film scores that brought colorful impression to the
film, the album includes many unreleased pieces written for the film
as well as a cover song of "Clair De Lune" by Claude Debussy,
an artist much respected by Hashimoto and apiece that can also be
heard in parts of the film. It is a soundtrack and a Kazumasa Hashimoto
original album that can be enjoyed by Hashimoto fans and movie fans
alike. As the title TOKYO SONATA indicates, music plays a central
role in the film and Kazumasa Hashimoto took on this challenge with
solid respect. The result is a collection of lean music that preserves
the raw essence and core of the melody that help to guide the film
to perfection, a monumental piece that celebrates the artist's entry
into new horizons as a composer of film music. Kazumasa Hashimoto
biography: Born in Tokyo. Composer/ Musician. Kazumasa Hashimoto has
released 4 albums to present including Euphorium released from noble
records in December 2007. Until now, the artist has received 5 stars
in a review by Germany's DE:BUG magazine, his music has been used
by the UK's BBC television, and his work has been taken up widely
by Japanese and overseas media in Europe and the United States. June
2007, Kazumasa Hashimoto performed in Europe's largest festival of
electronic music and multimedia art, the sonar festival in Barcelona,
and has been spreading his music actively on a global scale. In addition
to his own work, Hashimoto created music for the movie TOKYO SONATA
(director: Kiyoshi Kurosawa), an award winning film in the Un Certain
Regard section at the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival and
continues to unleash his spectrum of talent as a music producer for
commercials, theater, and other artists.

Las Escarlatinas
Al Galope (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SPAIN Maybe it's slightly irrational to say that Las Escarlatinas
are one of the greatest creations of humankind... but considering
how much happiness they brought to the lovers of beauty and pop with
their debut album (A todo color released in 2005), you are forced
to believe there is something magical and supernatural about this
quartet. Las Escarlatinas are one of the few bands that can create
their own world. Their playground melancholy, Lolita vocals, the multi
colored record sleeves, the 60's and 80's retro charm throwbacks,
the ethereal dreamy collective feel, the pink and sticky bubblegum
teenage spirit, it's all here...their very own universe that is. However
this is only the tip of a musical iceberg that contains J-pop, bubblegum,
beat pop with lush harmonies, sunshine and soft pop, beatles-esque
moods, donosti pop, italo disco, gentle electronica, bossa nova...
This time, the recipe created by Mateo Guiscafré has been cooked
by the grand chef Guille Milkyway (La Casa Azul), a true guru in Spain
and key opinion leader in the indie scene. Songwriters such as Alberto
Matesanz (Mate, Plastic d'Amour), Fernando Márquez El Zurdo,
Anne Arbor (Pedro Vigil & Natalia Quintanal), Sergio López
De Haro (Kiki D'aki), Violeta Gómez, Miguel Angel Villanueva
(Los Brujos), Pablo Jiménez (Pulpops) also ensure that magic
is widespread in each of the twelve songs. Add two cover versions
of songs by Olivier Libaux (Nouvelle Vague) and Korean hipsters, Misty
Blue and voilà, Al galope. The record is just lovely. This
is indie-ish pop (although the album has vibes that recall Saint Etienne,
Ephemera, Mareva Galanter or The Cardigans) with sultry, angelic and
delightful vocals and a generous budget production. Las Escarlatinas
achieve being fashioned while being elegant indeed. Their voices are
spectacular all over and the production is very much in detail while
remaining very modern, straight, vivid and youthful. Everything about
Las Escarlatinas seems young and tender. All this band wants is a
chance to be heard, and you'll be doing yourself a favor to champion
them. Every single song on Al galope is memorable, jewel-like, catchy,
shockingly melodic, and tinged with irony and hope. It's hard to choose
favourite songs on this album because they're all very well-crafted,
both melodically and lyrically. They all get stuck in your head. Las
Escarlatinas have definitely jumped to the major leagues. * Siesta
also released solo albums of the Escarlatinas singers under the production
of Ramón Leal & Mateo Guiscafré: Cristina Georgina
(Mapamundi) and Bel Divioleta (Espejos).

Library Tapes
A Summer Beneath the Trees (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Library Tapes follow up the highly acclaimed Make Mine Music
album Höstluft with the beautiful and atmospheric long player
A Summer Beneath the Trees. A Summer Beneath the Trees steps away
from the minimal sound of previous Library Tapes releases, with rich
layers of sound and more varied instrumentation, and strings taking
a more prominent role. Joining Library Tapes main man David Wenngren
(piano, laptop and field recordings) are Peter Broderick (Bella Union,
Type, Kning Disk) who adds violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celeste,
viola and banjo on the six of the album's nine tracks, and Danny Norbury
(Static Caravan, Ono) who plays cello on three tracks. The trademark
ageing clicks and glitches of earlier releases are largely absent,
and there is a newfound warmth and depth to these recordings. The
album moves Library Tapes further into the realm of modern classical
and cinematic soundtracks, with the music bringing to mind Arvo Pärt,
Michael Nyman and Max Richter. Based in Gothenburg in Sweden, David
Wenngren has also released music under the name Forestflies and has
extensively toured UK, Europe and USA, playing live with the likes
of Sylvain Chauveau, Greg Haines and Akira Rabelais.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail.
A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic
e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This
all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired
by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space
and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia.
Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a
matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do
something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical,
or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment"
to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the
titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken
kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken
7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their
own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was
done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started
by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate
work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance
collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as
Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek
in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work
for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches)
and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations
by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many
more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel,
Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron
Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is
a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include
Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub
Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher
(A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations,
photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum
52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group
exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial
of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous
musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew
Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Ocean
Pantheon Of The Lesser (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 2xLP to follow in about one month. Following their acclaimed
breakthrough debut album that caught the ears of critics and fans
worldwide, and became Important's highest selling album, Ocean has
returned with their forward thinking, brutally heavy and purely minimalist
sophomore album Pantheon Of The Lesser. Pantheon Of The Lesser was
composed over a period of two years in Ocean's home studio in Portland,
Maine. As the seasons passed each track was written, re-written, played
and then re-played as layers were slowly stripped away until the true
essence of the song was revealed. Once Ocean entered the studio it
took another two years to deconstruct Pantheon Of The Lesser until
they had found the essence of their writing. This disciplined deconstructionist
approach to songwriting is how Pantheon Of The Lesser is how Ocean
takes it to the next level of the abyss. The result of this compositional
technique is over an hour of strictly bare instrumentation and a kind
of natural heaviness that slowly rises and falls in a pure organic
fashion. Everything in it's own time. Simply profound. Heavy like
Schoenberg. While Ocean continues to explore and expand upon their
"less is more" approach of profound musical minimalism and
sheer heaviness, Pantheon Of The Lesser is a bit more musical than
its predecessor. The Beacon, the opening track on Pantheon Of The
Lesser, was played as Ocean's complete set on a recent US tour and
on dates with Mono and Boris. Clocking in at 41 minutes on record
and over an hour live; The Beacon evolves in 3 distinct movements
with fleeting moments of hypnotic melody and earth shaking heavy dirges
creating an all-encompassing tone of pure misanthropy. The second
and final track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, titled Of The Lesser, carries
a similar theme of misery. Written as an ode to distraction, chemical
and otherwise, it is Ocean at their most personal: a pure sonic stream
of consciousness in slow motion. Packaged in a deluxe foil printed
heavy-duty cardboard jacket with art by renowned Maine illustrator
Bruce Hutchison. The vinyl version is packaged in double 200 gram
vinyl, packaged in deluxe letter pressed covers and limted to 500
copies.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter
and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician
in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded
entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where
both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned
with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100%
clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From
transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his
wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel
fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love'
shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group
he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant,
utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested
in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant
classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

recorded with the help of Dave Portner (Animal Collective, Terrestrial
Tones) and Rusty Santos (The Presence). A haunted children's carol
that'll make you glad you're inside by the fire.

Scarlet's Well
Gatekeeper (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SPAIN In the beginning, Scarlet's Well was Bid (of Monochrome
Set fame) accompanied by a fluctuating cast of girlish singers, esoteric
musicians and random collaborators. It was a beautiful but primarily
solo vision. Lavishly illustrated albums emerged quietly, all set
in the vicinity of a place called Mousseron, "a sickly village
situated somewhere east of the Azores and only slightly north of the
Styx" populated by howling wolves, seductive mermaids and a bawdy
captain with his crew of beer-swilling pirates and off-kilter animals
with disturbingly human characteristics. Seven albums have now been
released and with the most recent two: Black Tulip Wings (2006) and
Gatekeeper (2008) Scarlet's Well has evolved into a band in its own
right, with live gigs, collaborative song writing, luscious merchandise,
tantrums and uncorroborated suggestions of bizarre fantasies. A sense
of band empathy and the benefits of varied influences are evident
in both these albums but there is still a thematic consistency. Although
there is a conceptual thread that runs through the albums, the songs
still function as pop in the sweetest sense, i.e. they are catchy,
you can sing along (if you must) and most are dance friendly. What
make them special is their unpredictability and the dizzying range
of musical genres combined with an essence that is simply 'Scarlet's
Well'. It's Whirling Dervish meets gypsy troubadour with the crack
of a whip on the rump of a unicorn ... then it gets fey and funky.
Lyrics leap from cryptic literary allusions to pert whimsy and although
there is a certain obscure quality there is also an air of familiarity:
a morphic memory thing bringing on a parallel universe that reveals
itself to those who are open to getting lost with new acquaintances
down strange cobbled streets, wooded glades, uncharted waters or the
dark tunnels of the underworld. Bid describes it better in 'November
Night' from Gatekeeper, "Strange songs playing, so darkly chanted
with words I feel but don't understand." While Peter Momtchiloff
emphasizes the benefits of collaboration with New Friends, "We
are your new friends, if the night ever ends it will feel as if we've
always been here." Scarlet's Well is a big band - eight members
in all - but the sound, although rich and multi-layered is surprisingly
light and charming.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio
work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer
based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews:
"a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling"
[The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual"
[Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep
Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett,
my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very
aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this
to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter
of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired
me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and
positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors
in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition
came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages
that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was
given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground.
Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish
folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother
was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to
take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short
rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed
a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded
separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello
EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33,
45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously,
and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience
moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and
extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

PS, US This album glows with the perfect imperfection of live takes,
the sounds of fingers playing guitar strings, cracked notes, and a
stark, up front presence not found in previous recordings; moving
away from reverb-soaked guitar sounds towards something altogether
more affecting. It also contains some of the most joyous music Sigur
Ros has ever recorded. "Old fashioned psychedelic grandeur...is
revived with otherworldly majesty and inexorable crescendos¿a
typically majestic but uncharacteristically summery album, with jolts
of percussive energy and connotations of sunlight and air" -

Money (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US VINYL VERSION! Already up so early in the morning of 2008,
SKELETONS were hibernating in the safest, quietest, warmest place
in the world: Times Square, New York. In a haunted WWII-era ballroom
they recorded through the wintry nights when the studio was on fire.
Taking breaks at 5am, standing under heat lamps listening to Hot Jazz
outside the Time Warp Hotel, soaking up the empty streets with the
leftover creeps while the tourists sleep. It's just the same struggle
any old human has to go through to make anything: make it to work
on time, make an excuse, make babies, make war, make breakfast without
getting into a fight. The child of this struggle is "Money",
pre-made, for you, entering the world October 7th in the USA, and
October 28th in the UK and Europe via TOMLAB.

skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The
Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow
Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately,
Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot,

folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

Fading Yellow Volume 8 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'Hymns for Today: UK Pop-Folk-Sike Sounds 1968-1975'.
Limited Edition eighth installment of this very fine compilation series
that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75.
If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody
Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation
for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "It's been a long
hiatus but at last here are two excellent new volumes of the cult
Fading Yellow series. Vol. 8 is collection of British artist album
tracks of the period 1968-75... A beautiful confection of pastoral
shades and cotton wool clouds floating in a hazy Summer sky. Predominantly
mid-paced and lightly orchestrated, these are often acoustic based
songs with electric underpinning. A few, in the interval, have become
more familiar, notably the two fine selections by Jan & Lorraine
from their recently reissued Gipsy People album. The majority however
will be new to your ears. The track selection and flow is pretty much
faultless as one track melts effortlessly into the next, working its
magic on the ears. In some instances, tracks are surprising reworkings
of the most unlikely songs. For instance Raw's (aka New York Public
Library) rendition of 'What To Do', from their US and Germany released
only Raw Holly album consists of covers of Buddy Holly songs - this
one is an orchestrated tabla and sitar version! There are the short
sharp spurts like the enigmatic (because there is nothing known about
him) Michael Blount with 'Acorn Street' from his 1971 Patchwork album,
which at 1.58 leaves you wanting a lot more of the same. P.C. Kent's
'After Dark' is from their self-titled Deram Nova album and is pleasingly
pop (think a lighter version of Blossom Toes's 'Postcard' for instance)
whilst Vigrass & Osborne's 'Ballerina' (which was also a single
or a B side I think) has all the atmosphere, heavy with pathos of
Mike Batt's series title track 'Fading Yellow' from Vol.1. Storyteller's
'Alice Brown', Fuchsia's 'Me And My Kite' and Evensong's 'The Smallest
Man In The World' are also excellent. Overall, the FY signature brand
of soundscape is very much perpetuated here and fans of the series
will lap this up. There are as usual liner notes and band pics in
the booklet which help contextualise the music nicely. Buy with confidence."

Fading Yellow Volume 9 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'The Other Side of Life: Timeless UK Pop-Sike
& Other Delights, 1966-1972'. Limited Edition ninth installment
of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche
sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport
Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles...
21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG
MAGAZINE: "Here we are squarely back in singles territory. Pop
Workshop's 'Fairyland' is a good starter and manages to be both brash
and gentle at the same time. Suzi Klee's 'Punch And Judy Girl' is
a plaintive and tremulous pop ballad by this 'Swiss Miss' (I've always
wanted to use that somewhere!); it comes across like Jan and Lorraine
produced by Mike Batt (only it was produced by Georgio Gomelsky!).
Dave Christie's 'Penelope Breedlove' makes its commercial compilation
debut (and is also included on Psychic Circle's Fairytales Can Come
True comp also out this month); a fabulous and atmospheric pean to
the object of his affections, this is NOT the same version as the
6AX acetate compiled on Syde Tryps Vol.7. Although it's the same song,
the two versions are markedly different in arrangement and timing,
so you certainly need both. Pussyfoot's 'Hasty Words' is another beauty
with its lilting 3/3 waltz timing and a lovely choral vocal job to
boot. Mike Leslie's 'Office Girl' has been a long time want of mine
in the original, a delightful ode to a lonely clerical worker lost
in the urban crowd as the singer puckers up the courage to approach
her. It deserved to be more than a B side too. Rodney Bewes' 'Dear
Mother Love Albert' is the topside to the already compiled and much
sought after 'Meter Maid' and it has a similar vibe - was this the
actual TV series signature tune or was it written as a single in its
own right I wonder? It sounds way too magically bendy for 1970 television!
Christian's 'Other Side Of Life' is another restless orch popper with
more than a passing reminder of The Apple's 'Other Side' as well.
A good string arrangement adds a lot to it. Tony Ritchie seems to
have recorded quite a few sides in Europe including the excellent
'Rain On My Window' included here with its urgent "loner"
vibe that would have suited Paul & Barry Ryan for instance c.1967.
Maybe it's about time a Tony Ritchie anthology was compiled? This
is another excellent collection of emotionally challenging sides.
You may encounter some of these sides individually occasionally but
it is only when they are compiled with this level of aesthetic skill
that they fully bloom."

MMM050 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25th)
PS, UK Make Mine Music releases a collection of exclusive tracks showcasing
the work of artists on the innovative label, as it reaches its landmark
50th release on Monday 24 November. The compilation includes new recruits
Piano Magic and Calder, label favorites Epic45 and the musical return
of label founder Scott Sinfield aka Portal. After quietly releasing
a range of critically acclaimed albums and EPs, Make Mine Music now
boldly states its manifesto. These are difficult times for the music
industry with file sharing, illegal downloads and falling sales. The
traditional music business model is failing and record labels are
scrabbling to find a way to survive. Artists too are campaigning for
better copyright laws and greater shares of royalties through coalitions.
But these still rely on an outdated model of releasing music. For
Make Mine Music, this isn't a crisis. It's a golden opportunity. Make
Mine Music is a truly radical independent label, run and owned by
the artists themselves. The artists pay for the manufacture and promotion
of their own records and correspondingly receive 100% of any income
generated. There are no management pockets to line, no shareholders
to please, no restrictive contracts or demands placed upon the artists.
Six years and 50 releases after its inception, Make Mine Music is
proof that there is another way. It's time for other artists and labels
to catch up. Tracklisting: Millimetrik Ignacio Ramonet et le Metronidazole,
Avrocar Two Silver Czars, Schengen The Prince (From Ueno), The Doldrums

Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and
a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering,
