Coral Sea, The
Volcano And Heart (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
CD $8.50 (A Hidden Agenda Record-083)
The Coral Sea’s debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo’s melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead’s impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism.

After Dinner
Editions
PS, US Self-titled LP & 9 additional live tracks. Led by charismatic singer/performer Haco. A sublime incarnation of surreal, direct & offbeat Japanese/ European pop. It features astonishing swathes of ambient sound, over which Haco's voice soars, before undertaking daring sonic maneuvers; surround sound, backwards/sped up/reversed tape techniques & binaural oddities. A large cast of pivotal Japanese musicians feature in the complex but charming arrangements, marking a strange twist to avant Japanese rock.

AFX (Aphex Twin)
Chosen Lords
PS, Us Rather than release a 3 CD feat. all 41 Analord tracks, AFX himself has distilled the tunes into a cohesive album, as it was intended to be heard. It is, in fact, the first full album of new material & the word is that the tracks are among his very best. Largely recorded on his private collection of analog synthesizers - vintage, modern & home-made, the rhythms, melodies, harmonies, & even some subliminal lyrics have all evolved directly from the machines. Partly-inspired by NY electro, Chicago house & Detroit techno classics, but the album also stimulates the kind of "lucid dreaming" atmospherics found on "Selected Ambient Works 85-92"

Be Your Own Pet
Summer Sensation
PS, US Teenage punk band formed in early '04 playing their 1st gigs in their hometown at a pizza joint called Guido's. The band played their 10th show ever at the CMJ festival that year after which London based label XL offered to put out a single "Damn Damn Leash". BBC Radio One & MTV2 started playing the single & by SXSW '05, kids from both sides of the Atlantic were freaking. Since then the band has conquered Glastonbury, Summersonic in Japan, Reading & Leeds Festival, Village Voice Siren Festival, done extensive touring w/Le Tigre & The Kills, released their 2nd single "Fire Department" on Rough Trade & recorded lots more songs. This EP combines the Rough Trade single tracks (never before released in the US) + 2 tracks from a session recorded w/ Steve McDonald (Donnas, Redd Kross). "Sarky, feisty, talented, loud & American. BYOP exude confidence that's nothing short of remarkable."-BBC.

Cities
Self-Titled
PS, US Four bright-eyed college kids, keen on creating a decidedly American brand of melancholic, but hooky, indie rock - have a bone to pick with those hipster highbrows focusing their attention across the pond. Slices through Brit-influenced post-punk with mid-90's, layered guitar rock & the organic, indie aesthetic. Continually honed their sound while playing sold-out shows with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, We Are Scientists, Thunderbirds Are Now! & I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, wowing audiences with their cathartic, near-feral live show.

Cosmopolitans
Wild Moose Party
PS, US "Pom Pom Gorls Gone New Wave, NYC 1980-1981" They surfed the New Wave as leaders of the pack of party bands. With their Shangri-La's attitude, their Hullabaloo choreography, their Sam The Sham spirit, & their deadpan lyrics, it was like watching your favorite 60s girl group, except the girls did more than just stand with a microphone & sing. Incl. previously unreleased cuts & live material, w/ tabloid-inspired Chevy Baby & Doug, & 2 bonus feat: the original video of "(How to Keep Your) Husband Happy" & liner notes by rock journalist Parke Puterbaugh.

David J
Crocodile Tears and The Velvet Crush
PS, US BAUHAUS bassist DAVID J's second solo outing, originally released in 1985, has folky and jazzy elements in direct counterpoint to the glammy goth thud of Bauhaus. Apparently spending time in the JAZZ BUTCHER's band rubbed off. Outstanding songwriting is displayed on the thirteen original tracks and five bonus cuts.

David J
On Glass
PS, US A revamped version of BAUHAUS bassist DAVID J's On Glass compilation drawing from rare 12-inch EPs released on the Glass label in the mid-'80s. Some of these tracks sound like preparation for his later songwriting with LOVE & ROCKETS. Fourteen songs in all.

PS, US Influenced by the classic rock & metal they grew up with along with trailblazers Helmet, Quicksand & Soundgarden. Showcases the Diegrinder mantra of "Gibsons, Marshalls & feedback". Great production, great playing & great songs along with a stripped down approach truly produced their finest work to date.

Donkeys
Self-Titled
PS, US At one time or another various members of The Donkeys have been the backing band for Cass McCombs, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone and Papercuts. In their own they!ve got the ramshackle tightness of say, The Band, or Jerry Jeff Walker, or Will Oldham. The raw power of Ronnie Hawkins, or Neutral Milk Hotel. The pop chops of Beulah, or Of Montreal. The psychedelic mystery of the Gris Gris, or Skip Spence. These comparisons still don't fully do it,
though.

Dupree, Taylor
Northern
PS, US The inspiration behind Northern (including its music, title and photography) comes from Deupree's recent relocation from the heart of urban activity in Brooklyn to the tranquility of the forest in upstate New York. Inspired by nature and the winter during which it was created, Northern, like much of his recent work, explores Deupree's interest in stillness and a slowed sense of time. Through quiet textures, subtle movements, faint loops and echoes, it was his goal to create the type of music that comes naturally to him while also highlighting the input from his dramatic new surroundings.

PS, US Marlon Sterling (aka Equinox) is one of drum n bass's longest serving choppage practitioners with multiple releases in circulation on labels such as Brain, Bassbin, Inperspective, Breakin' and Intasound. His debut EP on Planet Mu promises to be one of the hottest jungle releases of the year. "Acid Rain V.I.P. (Breakage Final Chapter Mix)" became one of the most sought-after tracks on the scene after it was promised to never be released commercially. Planet Mu made them break that promise!

Feu Therese
Self-Titled
PS, US Headed up by guitarist Jonathan Parant(FLY PAN AM) and bassist/sound artist Alexandre St-Onge(KLAXON GUEULE, SHALABI EFFECT, ET SANS), the band took shape in Montreal in 2004. With FLY PAN AM on indefinite hiatus, this is the band to watch. Channelling the explosive noise-rock collage of their brilliant live performances, this debut album pits a determined careening rhythm section against a palette of pumping organ chords, shards of electric guitar, vocals often processed beyond recognition and myriad swoops & squawks. Very strange and very catch avant rock.

Fiery Furnaces
Bitter Tea (Digipack Packaging)
PS, US "Bitter Tea (to be released on their new label Fat Possum Records) was recorded at the same time as Rehearsing My Choir, the album made with their 82 year old grandmother on vocal duties, and one which tracked the story of her life in a series of inventive vignettes. Bitter Tea, however, has an even wider appeal. Or, as Matt has put it: "Bitter Tea is a very girly record. The granddaughter record, as opposed to the grandmother record." The Friedbergers describe this album as "Sissy Psychedelic Satanism." Their reference points range from Devo to tack-piano and an imagined granddaughter1s pre-adolescently playful take on Black Sabbath - replete with backwards vocals. It's also a return to a fuller, more band-oriented sound. Matt Friedberger says he believes his little sister to be "The finest lady vocalist in Rock-n-Roll for the past twenty-five years". She may well be.
Bitter Tea was recorded in Benton Harbour Michigan in 2005 and was written & produced by Matt Friedberger. Matthew played all instrumentation apart from drums. Eleanor sang and played some drums. Additional drum work comes courtesy of Andy Knowles." - Filter

PS, US "For fans of Sloan, Velvet Crush, Zumpano, Arlo, New Pornographers, The Shins, The Figgs and Spoon. Stacks of 3 part harmonies, refreshing, slippery hooks, sugary subversive melodies all over the place, all wrapped up in a 'could-be-huge-playing-in-arenas in that alternate musical universe so many of us rhasodize over-a-few-beers.' Brimming with great, memorable song after song, blossoming into Technicolor view. These 'frauds' are the real deal and about as authentic as it gets."-Not Lame.

Frog Eyes
The Future is Inter-disciplinary or Not at All
PS, SPAIN Quartet Frog Eyes are the antithesis of their quiet Canadian village. Utilizing the carnival atmosphere of Rain Dogs-era Tom Waits, the frenetic energy of vintage Cramps, and the diabolical scheming of pre-Murder Ballads Nick Cave, the post-punk collective creates an atmosphere of psychedelic unease. In 2003, after the critical success of Hand, the band released the enigmatic Golden River on the Animal World label, resulting in another flurry of raves and a newly minted fan base. Now this exclusive EP features 17 minutes, 8 inter-connected songs that form one unified listening experience and leaves the listener breathtaken!

Frog Eyes
Golden River
PS, US REISSUE. Forming out of the ashes of Victoria BC's BLUE PINE, key members have reformed taking their unique swirling, stumbling sound & dragging it into darker, dramatic territory w/this incarnation. These guys tread into the same drowning waters as Nick Cave, Crime & the City Solution, Captain Beefheart & the Rock*A*Teens. Here are oddly paced scream & echo ballads w/ a burlesque, cabaret/carnival quality. Imagine Interpol melodies eerily pumped though a speaker in the same room where Destroyer covers Danielson Famile songs. "Best new band to emerge this year...disjointed, evasive, haunting, melodramatic, dissonant, anguished, ominous & HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

Gepe
Gepinto
PS, US Acclaimed as the independent album of the year in his country, the Chilean songwriter Gepe's first LP "Gepinto" has crossed frontiers with a very special mix of influences: from the folk of fellow Chileans Violeta Parra and Victor Jara to the refined pop of "Smile" by Brian Wilson to the experimentation that is characteristic of artists like Animal Collective and Devandra Banhart. His music frees traditions to create a musical personality that has been valued as unique, firstly thanks to the EP "5x5" and later thanks to "Gepinto". His participation in the compilation "Panorama Neutral" with the single "Namás" which has opened the doors to Europe for him having been featured in Spanish magazines like Rock De Lux and The Belle Music. A total discovery from the end of the earth.

Glissandro 70
S/T
PS, US A collaboration between members of POLMO POLPO & GUITARKESTRA. This 5 song full length circles at the intersection of pop song & extended dub, cribbed lyric & wordless chant, odd meter & straght beat. The music perfectly reflects an exuberant home studio celebration of 80s dance music with an emphasis on the trancey, guitar driven afrobeat & dub-infected strains of said era.

Holy Shit
Stranded at Two Harbors
PS, US MATT FISHBECK (PUSH KINGS) & ARIEL PINK's first recorded collaboration. Fishbeck on lead vocals & guitars leaving Ariel to work out the beats & bass lines. The urgency of the lyrics & melody is positively countered by timelessness of songwriting & an overall catchiness. The rhythms are genuinely contagious & most of them are created by Ariel's mouth. One can sense an affinity in this music for 80s pop icons as well underground classics.

Indigo Boys
Pansexual Party Song
PS, US This is the space where labels talk the hype. The big hype. About how big shit these fellows used to be. They're has-beens. And how the band sounds better then a fist fight between Jesus and Mohammed. About how they used to jam on your momma and buttstick all the tight-pants in the scene. Yea, it sound like post-modern math combined with Jimmy Eats World if they never owned a Green Day record....mixed with some Roxy Music and XTC (but only the early drug-induced stuff). Oh, and we would say how its a departure from the repetitive, non-vocal wish-we-were Shellac but quit having fun a long time ago and can't find a singer because no one in town wants the burden of living my pipe dream rock. THE INDIGO BOYS hail from Decatur, ATL. They have no fucking track record. They have done nothing, while accomplishing more in a couple of weekends (mostly holiday) then most bands accomplish in years. Welcome to the hype-machine. Stinky Smelly Pooty Jams. The Indigo Boys aren't some dumb joke band.... The Indigo Boys are the future."

PS, US 5th album from talented Minneapolis singer/songwriter finally lands him on a major via the first release on Isaac Brock's (MODEST MOUSE) new label Glacial Pace. In Europe he released music under the name Osso Bucco, appeared on compilations & a split EP on the Swedish Nosordo label & in the summer of 2005 played alongside Wolf Eyes, Ariel Pink, FM3 & others. Kraftwerk & Gaz Nevada
Danny Krivit & David DePino
PS, US As the taste for deep & dirty disco keeps growing, here are a couple of early '80s heavy-hitters stripped down, reworked & ready for action. On the A-side, a stunning bare-bones mix of Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express," breaking the epic down to its most basic rhythmic elements. B-side, Gaz Nevada's "I.C. Love Affair," is almost too funky & catchy to survive solely as a hipster favorite.

Land Of Talk
Applause Cheer Boo Hiss
PS, CANADA There is more than just 'talk' surrounding this particular Montreal band, female-fronted guitar-rock juggernaut Land of Talk. Now, finally, crossing borders into the US, topping the charts of college radio stations (KEXP, WOXY)... After burning CDRs by the hundreds to keep up with demand now their captured sounds have found proper release. Montreal Gazette described Land of Talk as, "Jagged and deliberate...a sound which is in every way it's own." In other circles you may hear them described as a place yielding destructive Edie Brickell/Blonde Redhead mutants, PJ Harvey meets Sonic Youth, Blondie meets Crazy Horse creatures. Either as a land or a band, they will soon consume all with their warm yet fierce embrace. Parasol folks are dropping names like early (rocking)-Cat Power, Love Is All and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Maquiladora
The Gulf
PS, SPAIN In the deep of the gulf, the dark water flows through Maquiladora's songs; floating, exhaling. Submerged into something foreign, yet archetypal, this EP is a sort of divine consciousness, a soundtrack for the ocean. Some sounds are familiar, others distant and remote, speaking to those from below the surface. Maquiladora, on loan from Darla records (for whom they normally release their records), swims within "The Gulf", an exclusive 6 tracks release on the Spanish label Acuarela Discos, a relationship formed out of kinship with Spain's banda divina, Mus. Their sound? Call it neo-leftfield folk, or country/stoner rock, or even Americana with hints of Slowcore, but what they do is basically dismantle the music machine and rebuild it with alien parts. Deconstrucion and clasicism? Yeah, why not?

First Chapter
PS, US Compilation of early singles is set up in a rocker/moody track/rocker pattern that takes the listener on a spectrum of sound vibes. Features stand out singles, "Serpent's Kiss" and "Garden Of Delight", as well as covers of "Like A Hurricane" (Neil Young), "Wishing Well" (Free), and "Dancing Barefoot" (Patti Smith). "A lush spacey hybrid of The Postal Service and The Broken Social Scene...and all the hype they've been getting because of their connection with the latter is more than warranted" - Spin. Headlights have been making a splash of late, most recently touring with Of Montreal, Mono, and Crooked fingers. Look for their full-length this fall. My Cat Is An Alien/Glands Of External Secret/Nells Cline
From the Earth 6
PS, UK Fierce blonde BARBARA MANNING and Bananafish founder SEYMOUR GLASS are joined by NELS CLINE on lap steel for "Icebox," a slow ascent from isolation through frozen tape manipulation, icy drones, and subtle infernal groans from the obscure side of the moon. This "defrosted mix" of "Icebox" features all sorts of bonus frequencies not on the limited edition vinyl. The unearthly fragmented vocals of Italian OPALIO brothers create the heavy, emotional textures of the interstellar "After the Meteor Shower," with howling guitars and electronics, the distant echo of a drum, and a whispered chant emerging from the concrete surface of the planet. Nalle
By Chance Upon Waking
PS, UK NALLE was formed in Glasgow in the summer of 2004. The group consists of HANNA TUULIKKI (vocals, kantele, flutes), ABY VULLIAMY (viola) and CHRIS HLADOWSKI (bouzouki, clarinet). All three group members have performed with SCATTER, and Chris and Aby also play in THE ONE ENSEMBLE OF DANIEL PADDEN, amongst other projects. By Chance on Waking is the group's debut release. Fused with magic, the haunting songs and sprawling melodies speak of our relationship with the sun, the mountains, and ravens. The songs center around narratives (sung in both English and Finnish-betraying Hanna Tuulikki's dual roots) augmented by tonal explorations using vocals, guitar, kantele, flutes, viola, bouzouki and clarinet with melodic wizardry, drawing on folk forms in a wholly idiosyncratic manner. Tuulikki's astonishing vocals have drawn favorable comparisons with Joanna Newsom. A stunning amalgam of folk, psych, improv and drone.

Pumice
Yeahnahvienna
PS, US Pumice has returned with another set of stirring & shambolic downer hymns. With songs nestled halfway between Xpressway's searing static and Flying Nun's dark jangle, Stefan Neville has quietly created a unique brand of fractured pop since 1991. Despite (or because of) his activity in New Zealand's cassette underground for the past 15 years, Neville has only recently begun to crawl into the consciousness of outsider music fans. Both the second widely available Pumice release, and the proper follow-up to 2003's acclaimed Raft CD on Last Visible Dog. Conceived and recorded during an artist residency in Vienna in 2004. The resulting recordings are indebted to Austrian beer, unspeakable horror and wild dogs. Neville's precariously arranged arsenal of cassettes, chord organ, vocals, drums and guitar has yielded a fragile and fractured masterwork. A stark and melancholic affair, calling to mind Alastair Galbraith, Sun City Girls and Supreme Dicks. Through Neville's layers of hiss and murk lie harrowing and beautiful songs. Auckland's Pumice is part of a New Zealand musical lineage that includes Dead C, Tall Dwarfs, The Pin Group, This Kind of Punishment, and contemporary acts like Armpit, Birchville Cat Motel, Witcyst, Antony Milton & Lovely Midget. His ballads & experiments encompass the aural oeuvre of the aforementioned acts delivered with a truly distinct vision.

Situation, The
Self-Titled
PS, US On their self-titled debut full-length, Philadelphia's The Situation bring together an amalgam of influences that you will be hard pressed to pinpoint. You will hear the swagger of Britpop icons like The La's and the Stone Roses mixed with the literate pop musings of American artists such as Bob Dylan and The Shins. Like the White Album or Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, the music on the album is decidedly anti-genre. Like Highway 61 Revisited or Blood on the Tracks, the lyrics on the album are well thought out, emotional ramblingsthe two of these together make this album a daydreamer's paradise. The artwork reflects album's theme, flesh vs. spirit, which is summarized by the first line from the opening track, "Amoralia." If this album were an essay on the human condition, this track would be its opening paragraph. The core of The Situation's gripping sound stems from the remarkable chemistry between songwriter Christopher Tucker and lead guitarist Joe Castro, whom Tucker dubs "Joey Marr" in reference to the Smiths legend. The group's 2003 debut, The Reece Nasty EP, drew numerous raves from esteemed publications. The Philadelphia Weekly exclaimed: "Absolute fucking pop geniusif this was NME you were reading, there'd be a little tag above this that said Single of the Week." The Big Takeover poetically observed that The Situation's "walls of ringing, arpeggiating Rickenbackers and proper pop songs sound geographically attuned to the Liverpool/Manchester soundthe sound of the Mersey as filtered through the Schuylkill." Magnet compared the group to '60s Brit gods The Kinks and The Small Faces, noting that they conjure "the same wobbly, psychedelic visions that the Brian Jonestown Massacre excels at." On their debut, they excel even further this is a capricious album that requires many listens to begin to understand. Nearly four years in the making, the album was finally completed late 2005 and mixed by Philadelphia's hardest working producer and soundsmith, Brian McTear whose credits include the likes of Mazarin, Matt Pond PA, and the Capitol Years.

Sunroof
Silver Bear Mist
PS, US ilver Bear Mist, Sunroof!'s first release in over two years, is an epic double-CD of inimitable buzz. Recorded during a period when guitarist Matt Bower (Skullflower) was also concentrating on writing material with Marcia Bassett of Double Lepoards for their duo, Hototogisu, Silver Bear Mist diverges from recent releases like the collagy USSA, Splat, Wings Over America, and the last major Sunroof! release-- the krautrock-ish Cloudz-- to revel in thick, billowing fuzz bombs. Aided by Vibracathedral Orchestra's Mick Flower and US duo The Skaters, Bower lets rip on rockers like the Tibetan-oriented "Buried in the Sky" and the immense "Sky Blue Sword." Disc two mixes it up a bit, with the unexpectedly docile "Stacked Diamonds" featuring The Skaters, alongside the scouring surge of Bower leads on "Be Sure to Boogie" and "Luminous Kite."

While supplies last*** What do alt-rock/power pop heroes like Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) and Matthew Sweet do on their time off? The two first worked together in conjunction with Mike Myers as members of the band Ming Tea, appearing in all three Austin Powers movies and soundtracks. Now they've struck out on their own with Under The Covers Vol. 1, a tribute to their favorite '60s acts, including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Who, and cult favorites like The Velvet Underground, The Zombies, The Left Banke and Love. Leaving the songwriting to others lets Matthew and Susanna focus on singing, and the results are breathtaking. Tale Of The CIty: A Philadelphia Compilation
PS, SPAIN Eighteen underground bands make up an addictive compilation with a brilliant start. The enthusiastic A-Sides and their psychedelic 'Sidewalk Chalk' is very Kinks-like. They're the new sensation, ones to watch out for... The second track gets into spacey sounds with the Flaming Lips -probably thanks to National Eye. Track three is coming from deep in the basement -The Capitol Years sound as if the Velvet Underground were playing without Lou Reed. Our aim really, is to keep you guessing with every track, while you think 'how the hell I was missing all that?!' There are bands like Buried Beds and their self-released album, as well as alternatives options such as Dr. Dog or Mazarin, the latter with an unreleased demo. In fact, ten of the tracks are exclusive tunes. The Spinto Band shows how the Beatles would sound in the 21st century. The Webb Brothers have recently been doing brilliantly internationally and Marah with their 'Formula, Cola, Dollar Draft' - well beloved by underdogs- take part in this initiative as well. Let's go on: Kurt Vile with his psych-folk, Guided By Voices who supported the Strokes, dreamy melodies by Hi-Soft -whose leader was in the former Lilys- and finally a good example of psych-pop with Mad Action. Maybe it's a bit of an exaggeration to say that Philadelphia is the new Brooklyn. However 'The New York Times' pointed out that the city is becoming so cool that it could be the sixth district in New York. Obviously this is their opinion, and who are we to argue... Track list: 1. BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL's CAMPBELL KNEALE and PSEUDOARCANA chief, ANTHONY MILTON, have joined forces with JAMES KIRK (SANDOZ LAB TECHNICIANS, GATE) and RICHARD FRANCIS (ESO STEEL) to create a claustrophobic, organic web of massive drones. Everything on this CD was recorded outdoors with battery-powered instruments. Underneath the ground, the quartet burrows out their own cavern, bouncing sounds off the walls until it becomes a singular, solid mass. Each gently sculpted tone floats in humid air. The music is saturated with the dirt and grime from a million a years of human history, wailing out in unison like an excavation turned exorcism. With Throats as Fine as Needles are your guides through this aural fog. Co-released with Ohio's Students of Decay imprint.

Yuko Nexus6 first developed works based on readings, then carefully applied a blend of the analog color of the audio cassette on to sounds generated by new musical technologies, offering a destabilizing linguistic and temporal experience. Forthcoming Releases

10lec6
Join Us (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US (Pronounced "dis-lec-six"). French disco punk featuring the original drummer of Daft Punk. This is a repressing of their debut 7-inch that was originally released by the band. The awesome lead vocals call to mind Eve Libertine of Crass. Emi (vocalist) emits such passion and conviction that it's hard to turn away. The music recalls fellow Crass label mates Dirt mixed with the rhythmic collisions of Essential Logic. Picture the more dance-y Crass songs and you may have a starting point. 10lec6 is very rhythm-based, but also very aggressive.

Stranger on the Sofa (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US New album of noir-ish film jazz from legendary composer & bassist for MAGAZINE and NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS on his own label. Auer, Jon
Songs from the Year of Our Demise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 2ND)
PS, US Best known as songwriter/guitarist/vocalist for the POSIES & member of BIG STAR. First solo full-length of original material. The record is at turns more gritty & more lush, more atmospheric & more immediate, more universal & more personal than anything he's done in the past. It reflects the highs & lows of both a soaring exuberance & a crushing fatalism. Keyboards, cellos, organs, chimes & gizmos come 7 go while Jon's signature guitar work & angelic voice consistently echo the emotional turmoil of the past half decade.

Battiato, Franco
Pollution (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Franco Battiato's wonderfully lively 1973 concept album Pollution is an audaciously psychedelic album drawn from the space rock dimension with good portions of electronics and keyboard layers. Drawing heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer, Battiato and company (besides himself, three backing band members play synth as well) give Pollution an extreme electronic edge. With comparisons to Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, and Pink Floyd, Pollution was declared "genius" by Frank Zappa. Extremely influential on the '90s Chicago post-rock mafia. Original artwork. New detailed liner notes.

PS, US Known for for his ability to reach the primal core of emotional matters, Battisti did some of his very best songwriting in his early '70s collaborations with the cryptically named lyricist Mogol. This 1972 album, the title of which translates to "Humanly Man: The Dream," features Battisti's gorgeous melodies wrapped up in soft, warm orchestral arrangements. Battisti's experimental pop is worth discovering on this first time U.S. CD release. Original artwork and new detailed liner notes.

Battisti, Lucio
Amore E Non Amore (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US Considered one of the greatest Italian songwriters for his ability to reach the primal core of emotional matters, Battisti is held in the same regard in Italy as John Lennon is in the English-speaking world. Aided instrumentally by members of PFM (progressive Italian rockers named oddly enough for a bakery) and guitarist Alberto Radius of Formula Tre, Lucio Battisti made this much adored 1971 cult masterpiece. Imagine Brazilian psych-pop combo Os Mutantes fronted by Southern soul legend James Carr and you'll get a glimpse of this inexplicably accomplished and adventurous album.

Beirut
Gulag Orkestar (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US While sounding like the work of an entire Balkan gypsy orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads & upbeat marches, is actually the work of 19 year old Albuquerque native Zack Condon w/an assist from Jeremy Barnes (NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL & HAWK & A HACKSAW). There are no guitars on this album; instead, horns, violins, cellos, ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiel, drums, tambourines, congas, organs, pianos, clarinets and accordions all build and break around Condon's deep-voiced crooner vocals, swaying to the Eastern European beats like a drunken twelve-member carnival band.

Bitcrush
In Distance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 15TH)
PS, US "In Distance," Bitcrush's latest offering and first on n5MD, finds Ex-Gridlock beat-smith Mike Cadoo pushing n5MD further into a world where two disparate yet emotional elements, human and electronic, are merged into one. Recorded over a one year span, In Distance is "very personal," by the artist's admission. Cadoo has laid himself bare in an introspective ride where shimmering shoe-gaze-centric guitars, broken electronics, dual bass work, live drums, and Mike's now trademark "the one left behind" vocal style meld together into long aural road-trips ending at dusk in the middle of nowhere. A trip you will be more than happy to take considering who is driving. Vast and heartfelt; engaging yet adrift, In Distance has as much in common with his debut "Enarc" (Component) and the "Shimmer & Fade" EP (Enpeg) as it does with the more recent output of Mogwai, Album Leaf or even Fourtet. In Distance leads us there, now how do we get home...for fans of: mogwai, fourtet, ulrich schauss, dryft.

Black Heart Procession
Spell, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US "The Spell" is the most fitting name yet for a Black Heart Procession record. Spells are cast over a person, a love affair, a nation, a world; they enchant and entrap, disorient and delude. They're the heart of this release, and there's no better word to describe the spooky intoxication of the band's sound. Theirs is the sound of driving at night across the West. Like the wide-open landscape, this is music that knows how to be both desolate and lush. Here, a song's 6/8 beat will pull you into a moody seductive waltz and next, the violin and piano evoke the house band of a lonesome cabaret with the lights turned low. Then the strings stop their mournful crying and shift into a propulsive thrum, and now we've got the pedal to the metal and we're heading straight down the open road into a cinematic twilight.

Shards of Yardbirds, Cream, Pretty Things, Who & Barrett-era Floyd fly around w/a vicious kinetic energy, melded by the spirit of Stax. Black Time
Midnight World (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US The point is talent over ability, ideas over proficiency, energy over competence-action, time, and vision. Add some musical instruments to this confusion and the resulting mess is "Black Time" -shambolic but passionate, hollerin' and wailin' at the dying of the red light. If you pay attention to zines, blogs and websites dedicated to sub-underground rock, then no doubt you are aware that Black Time have been getting favorably compared to Crime, Pussy Galore, The Electric Eels, The Cramps and The Fall. A string of hopelessly limited edition vinyl 7"s and 12"s have stoked the fire. The hype is justified in this case, as Midnight World is the perfect marriage of chug-a-lug, primeval drumming, opaque layers of guitars, new wave cinema references, '60s and '70s punk, lo-fi static and overwrought vocals from frontman Lemmy Caution. The best UK export since The Country Teasers.

PS, US These new recordings effectively combine all the strongest elements of what they are capable of into one solid, complete, concise album. It's mega-drone, balls- out punk rock, extreme dark psychedelia & 70s' fuzzed out acid rock. The clincher is an infusion of ultra-catchy melodicism into their already heavy foundation. Boyracer
Punker Than You Since '92 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, US DOUBLE 'BEST OF' 75 SONG RETROSPECTIVE. Since the early 1990s Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson. Armed with a selection of fuzzboxes and a carefree revolving door line up, Boyracer have been carefully crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off frantic slithers of adrenaline punk-pop. Noted recordings on numerous indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland, and brutally honest sweaty live performances have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre. This double disc set, on the band's own 555 Recordings label, features 75 selections from their exhaustive back catalogue. The tracks chosen (by Stewart) span the band's global history from Leeds, UK to Flagstaff, Arizona, via stints in Japan and Australia. Forever embracing the DIY ethic to excess, Boyracer are known for their completists nightmare of a back catalogue, (with nearly 500 songs on commercially available releases to date). "Punker Than You Since '92" includes much of the band's best known and strongest material coupled with long out of print tracks, (including the impossible to find debut 7" unavailable anywhere since it's release in 1992). There are tracks from strictly limited releases too, such as 2005's lathe cut 10" LP (which was a pressing of 75 copies worldwide). The compilation is a welcome round-up for diehards, a chance to fill in some gaps for the casual observer, and is also a perfect introduction for the new and curious to one of indiepop's longest standing and respected bands. Disc One 2001-2006: 1. A History Of Snakes, 2. They're Making Money Off You, 3. Who Pissed On Yr Bonfire?, 4. 2nd Hand Youth, 5. 9 To 5 Style, 6. Lou And Ged, 7. 90s Are Thru, 8. Cash, Johnny
Open Road (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US The recordings that Johnny Cash made at the beginning of his long and fortunate career all took place in SUN studios, under the watchful eye of producer Sam Phillips, well known for also having discovered Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Phillips was struck by "Hey Porter," a song Cash had written just after he returned from the military. When asked to write a ballad for the B side, Cash wrote "Cry, Cry, Cry," that very same night. The single sold 100,000 copies in the USA alone. His second single, "Folsom Prison Blues," was just as successful. In '56 "I Walk The Line" remained on the charts for 44 weeks and sold a million copies. From this point forward there was no place to go but up for the young Johnny Cash. The precious recordings collected in this Universe CD bring together those very recordings that made him famous, along with some outtakes and rarities. Cepia
Atlantic Blood (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, CANADA Featuring tracks by Mr.. Projectile, Tiki Obmar, Miles Tilmann, Tim Koch and the man behind the curtain Huntely Miller aka Cepia. Having met wide acclaim for the majestic machine clatters and subterraneous melodies of the Dowry EP (Ghostly International), Minneapolis's Cepia now graces Sublight with "ATLANTIC BLOOD", a CD collection of
remixes and new material that runs a remarkable stylistic gamut. Cepia brings a one-two punch with a propulsive mix of Mr. Projectile's "You Need" and an icy reworking of Tiki Obmar. Elsewhere, the ocean beats of "X to M" by Tim Koch are complemented beautifully by the skeleton-hop of "Naoise" by Dosh, while the lush digital grain of original pieces "574" and "Arount" exhibit the versatility of Cepia's Midas touch. Also including reinterpretations of Fog and Miles Tilmann, Atlantic Blood is a compelling addition to the oeuvre of one of the most original voices in modern electronic composition, and a tantalizing precursor to his debut.

Coral Sea, The
Volcano And Heart (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
PS, US Remastered! Soaring debut album from Santa Barbara atmospheric pop outfit. "The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea's debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo's melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead's impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. Imagine a stratospherically skillful space-pop quartet with an entire string section behind it, and you'll be on their wavelength, but for me it all comes down to the voice. Frontman/founder Rey Villalobos' vocals steal the show: a luminous, sometimes androgynous croon, a silvery warble, without a glimmer of pretension...and here my closest comparison of the moment is Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue (but Rey's voice is leagues richer and less dependent on effects) and Parasol's very own Kevin Tihista (with a bunch more Thom Yorke than KT's ever going to show us), especially in the lyrics and phrasing departments.

Corsano, Chris & B. Chasny/Paul Metzger
Split (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US C. Corsano (sparring partner of Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, Nels Cline, et al) and Ben Chasny (aka SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE) had previously paired up for the School Of The Flower LP on Drag City. As wide a stylistic swath as that record cut, it was far from an exhaustive map of their topography. Here, Corsano's drums and Chasny's guitar chatter & clatter with jittery hyper-articulation, worrying the meat off the bone in short sharp strokes. A "Worm Confesses" over the course of one side of this split record & is given an impassioned absolution. For over 2 decades, Paul Metzger (TVBC)was one of the Twin Cities' overly well-kept secrets. His recent emergence as a solo artist, via a pair of glowingly-received releases on the Chairkickers & Mutant Music labels, has started to raise his profile to a level commensurate with his devil's-crossroads-deal talent. On a guitar modified with music box innards & an accompanying tanpura, Metzger dives deep into the raga heart of a moonlit day & returns with the jewels of "August." Released in an edition of 766 copies, with silkscreened poplar wood covers.

Court & Spark
Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US With Hearts, The Court & Spark have created their meisterwerk, a rarified record that seamlessly stitches together their shimmering river hymns, fuzzy sci-fi sky songs, acoustic drone in the key of OM, dusky West Coast C&W (that's country and western), spectral discreet music, and serpentine motel blues into an album as rich, nuanced, and irreverent as it is ambitious. Hearts is about love, sanity, spirituality, and death on the borderlands of the 21st century, and it's the

Daedelus
Denies the Day's Demise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US Electronic producer and sound archivist Daedelus returns with a new fifteen-track dancefoor masterpiece, Daedelus Denies the Day's Demise. Tweaking the controls of his magic music box once again, he cranks out a set of techno-inspired programming infused with Brazilian bossa nova, complete with shakers, hand claps, congas, and percussion. Daedelus has a knack for finding the hidden common denominator between modern electronic music and the sounds of yesteryear. His productions often contrast IDM-styled cut-ups with classic arrangements from the '30s and '40s. With a string of releases on cutting edge labels like Plug Research, Hefty and Eastern Development, Daedelus has refined a style that has no imitators. Whether the music hits you through sweaty club speakers or a comfy pair of headphones, you know at once who you're hearing. Operating out of So-Cal, Daedelus also incorporates a healthy dose of hip-hop into the mix. He frequently collaborates with L.A.-based emcee BUSDRIVER, who guests here along with fellow underground luminaries MF DOOM, ABSTRACT RUDE, MADLIB & HIGH PRIEST (ANTI-POP CONSORTIUM).

What began as a senior thesis project a decade ago has evolved into a musical world so rich with musicality and merrymaking that the first six albums and ten years of touring pomp alone could nourish the most scrutinizing of thrill-seekers. Darling Downs
How Can I Forget This Heart Of Mine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US The Darling Downs stand out as the most unlikely of collaborations between longtime members of the fertile Australian rock scene. While it is not at alll insane to imagine the driving force behind Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, & The Surrealists, Kim Salmon, working with Died Pretty's energetic frontman and songwriter Ron Peno, the improbable happens when you consider the result that might flow from such a teaming. What are the odds that these two towering figures of Australian music, famous for swaggering, noisy, swampy punk rock (Salmon) and soaring pop rock(Peno) would concoct such a perfect loveletter to American country folk? 1000-1? Armed only with Kim Salmon's custom Cole Clark acoustic guitar and Peno's singular voice and vision, The Darling Downs crafted an almost impossible album: a record of nuanced beauty, a subtle masterpiece that unfolds like a dahlia with each successive spin, giving the listener something new and unexpected at every helping. All from two guys and one pristine guitar. At times Peno channels the spirit of Appalachian folk's high lonesome sound, complete with yips, yelps and howls, while elsewhere his (improvised?!) vocals are hypnotically understated, almost delicate--threatening to disappear into thin air before crashing down like thunder. Supporting Peno's acrobatic vocal brilliance is Salmon's equally understated, elegant guitar playing, perhaps the most restrained of his career, made all the more stunning when you know the fireworks and growl of which he is capable and for which he is famous. Salmon showcases not only his versatility but playing of such surprisingly refined grace that it defines the album as one of the best listens of 2006. "With Salmon often infusing the guitar lines with deft lilts and melodies, grasping each song is sometimes as difficult as interpreting a smoke signal in a storm, the ever-shifting qualities of the music making it difficult to categorize. The experience mesmerizes."-The Age

Dead Machines
Dead End on Olson St. (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 2ND)
PS, US VINYL ONLY. Moldy Michigan basements and unwritten horror movies alike know and love the Dead Machines. This megalithic noisemaker is the work of John Olson (Wolf Eyes, American Tapes) and Tovah Olson (Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice) and "Dead End On Olson St." is a new chapter in this prolific couple's body of work. Dead Machines rely less on bombast and clenched-fist and dig deeper into sound and the space between sounds for their sonic de-evolvings. This record has one long peice per side, clicking like a stopped rotor over tape loops, bizarre horns, fucked up delay units and homemade electronics. Beautifully paced and possibly sweet as it is terrifying. Cover art by John Olson is a full-color collage of some flesh-eating types, and the pressing was done entirely on white vinyl.

Electric Soft Parade
Human Body EP, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US This EP finds Brighton, England's band at a perfect mid-point between the guitar-pop rush of their first album (2002's "Holes In The Wall") and the studied, symphonic arrangements of their second (2003's "The American Adventure"). These seven tracks (plus a US bonus track) are ESP's best work to date. Most notably, "Cold World" skips along like a Paul McCartney-penned Strokes track and "Everybody Wants" is a sweeping epic of a song that punctuates the band's enduring ambition.

I I (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, US From the beginning, this has been a living growing thing. This album finds the group at sextet size, with greater powers & capabilities then before. The sound is achieved using a mad variety of instruments, from a standard Martin 6 string acoustic, Fender jazzbass & drumkit to more exotic implements such as doumbek, dholak & male & female larynx. The outcome is a friendly new sensation, it warms the room & dims the lights with dense yet agile atmospherics, still in communion with the realities of our present day.

Everyothers, The
Pink Sticky Lies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US NYC's Everyothers make rock 'n' roll in the grand, street-scamp glam sense of the 70's with mashed in bits of frothy contemporary pop. But you can't call them backdated. The songs here are pure hitsville and could've worked on an early Cheap Trick record and a mid-period Bowie album. The musicians met as a result of Ian's doctoral research on Kenyan music. Since 2000, Otieno had been assisting Ian in documenting benga. A unique sounding record that arose from musicians from different circumstances, but who, at the same time, have something in common: they play in electric guitar bands & perform in bars & nightclubs. They've worked hard to release their own music over the past 15 years, often to little recognition. Not a high-profile intern'l collaboration of the sort that would be featured at Starbucks checkout counters. Rather, it is based on a deep connection between the musicians, &, as a result, has a very honest sound reflecting this experience.

Fax
Primario (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, MEXICO FAX returns with his third full length for Static Discos, a new collection of songs that signal an alternate sound path in the FAX template. Whereas FAX's previous albums were inspired by discrete minimal techno and microhouse, PRIMARIO focuses on a slow rocking, almost ambient, low end invisible soundtrack full of lights and shades. The stance on the new album is a meditative construction of tracks which feature and array of contributions by Alex Ayuli (A.R. Kane), Fernando Corona (Murcof), Ignacio Chavez (Kobol) and Kate Simko (Detalles), producing a beautiful collection of music that slides in between the sound works of later Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis and the collaborations of Burnt Friedman with Jaki Liebezeit. FAX's electronic signature sound is still intact on PRIMARIO, but slowed down for maximum effect, creating a rich and lush album full of dubby atmospheric tones, whispered rhythms and melodic oceanic songs.

Final Fantasy
He Poos Clouds (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US On his second album, Owen Pallet presents a clearly enhanced concept of his solo project Final Fantasy. The core sound of his 2005 debut, "Final Fantasy Has A Good Home," was mainly based on Pallet's violin and his expert handling of the loop pedal. He now proves his skills as an arranger, working with an abundantly staffed chamber music ensemble, featuring a string quartet, piano, harpsichord and percussion. Still, Owen's ingenuity for catchy melody lines and surprising idioms is captivating.!Regardless of the more extended scope for this album, it was produced to maintain a certain intimacy.
The overall atmosphere carries the ease of an afternoon dress rehearsal, as if the ensemble members played for themselves one last time before the crowd rushs in. Owen"s mostly introverted vocals also express this mood of privacy. The musical language is eclectic without letting its influences act as bare quotations for themselves. Traces were smeared with care and everything is consolidated and processed in such a distinct way that one cannot clearly designate the culprits any longer. He even integrates an amazing variety of stylistic spheres within the individual songs. String arrangers for ARCADE FIRE. Fans of Andrew Bird tingle w/delight. Full US tour coming in Fall.

Fleeting Joys, The
Despondent Transponder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Flavors of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, The Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth are there, but don't fully explain this shimmering anomaly. Their debut album Despondent Transponder was written, performed, recorded and mixed by the band. Brilliant Californian drummer Matt McCord lends his skills to the project. After hearing Despondent Transponder, legendary Swervedriver drummer, Jez, has pegged the duo for collaboration on their next release. While appreciating the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, it has never been the goal of Fleeting Joys to imitate what they admire. "It is merely a starting point to expand from, experiment with, and go from there. We simply love the experience of being drenched in crashing waves of beautifully distorted chords!" It's from this love that the song-crafting of despondent transponder answers the pop vs. noise riddle with catchy, at times - even happy - melodies and crashing instrumentals that rip through like a cyclone tearing up a trailerpark. "Of recent things to cross this desk, Fleeting Joys is a real delight. The epiphanic Spectorian fog works best on "The Breakup," which plays Rorika's gossamer vocals and symphonic synth lines against John's My Bloody Valentine-style guitar sturm und drang over a stellar melody. - Jackson Griffith, Sacramento News & Review

Gnac
Twelve Sidelong Glances (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, UK New Release!! 17 tracks. A brand new studio album from Gnac, the sophisticated instrumental project from Mark Tranmer. (The name is pronounced knee-ak, as in the last syllable of cognac.) Twelve Sidelong Glances is the fourth album by Gnac, whose previous albums are Friend Sleeping (1999), Biscuit Barrel Fashion (2001) and the singles compilation evens, as well as a more guitar orientated album as Mark Tranmer, Scoop of Ice Cream Moon (2004). Biscuit Barrel Fashion was released on the Poptones label, and declared album of the month by Russian Playboy magazine. The 17 tracks on Twelve Sidelong Glances follow on in the tradition of the cult Poptones-released set Biscuit Barrel Fashion, with imaginary mid-week mid-afternoon murder mystery music (Midgley Moor), electronica melodica (Green With Fright), and vespertine guitar (As Night Falls Upon Us) among the instrumental genres. Also included are two themes commissioned by Neen Scene artists, including Vanessa Beecroft's Wedding, first performed at her wedding ceremony in Italy. Jeffrey Lee Pierce remains a legend to his many fans and a biopic of the frontman is currently in production. Tribal, psychobilly blues is the best way to describe Gun Club's energetic death rock. Guryan, Margo
Take a Picture (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
PS, US Originally released on Bell Records. Includes liner notes by David Rosner. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Sometimes when an cultily-adored obscurity is reissued, it becomes clear that a lot (if not all) of its mystique was due to its rarity. However, this time the buzz is justified: a '60s soft pop masterpiece. The sound is a delightful collision, with surprisingly funky electric piano and Steve Cropper-style guitar leads dueling over prominent, clunky drums and unobtrusive orchestrations. Over it all, Guryan's breathy overdubbed vocals--her wispy, wobbily-pitched babytalk style was clearly heavily influenced by bossa nova pioneer Astrud Gilberto, who covered this album's dreamy "Think of Rain"--give the album its most attractive feature. Guryan is as accomplished a songwriter as she is a singer; her main influences seem to be Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bacharach/David, and that combination of bossa nova and sleek pop sophistication is the watchword. Sweetly poppy, lightly jazzy, and completely irresistible, this is sunshine pop at its finest. 180gm.

Guthrie, Robin
Continental (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 6TH)
PS, US As COCTEAU TWINS guitarist and producer, Robin Guthrie is the man responsible for creating that famous sound and opening the door for My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, et al. Continental is Robin's strongest all-instrumental bliss out, or make out, record since Cocteau Twins. Robin gives more heart and soul on Continental than on his previous instrumental release Imperial. Continental is more focused, stronger in feeling, and in composition. Of course all of Robin's signature elements are here: Shimmering guitars, ethereal moods as fluid and deep as any of Eno's, and yes, he does at times thankfully bring the rock. The mood overall is classic Robin Guthrie. Fans of the Cocteau Twins and all they've spawned, please welcome back your daddy. This is the first of four new Robin Guthrie records. Robin's music is a treasure. He's one of the great all-time heroes of the current bliss pop generationTrack list: 1. Continental, 2. Conquering the Romantic, 3. Crescent, 4. Monument, 5. Amphora, 6. Handsome Family
Last Days of Wonder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US A collection of country folk love songs sung in airports, garbage dumps, drive-thru windows & shark-infested waters. The album celebrates the little miraculous moments of beauty found in everyday life: a golf course shining in the rain, hanging lights bouncing in the breeze, pigeons singing from billboards, trees blooming in squares of dirt. The songs linger on those moments when we"re pulled from the ordinary to feel awed by mystery, bewildered by beauty, terrified by the vast unknowable around us (whether we wander through shady groves or crowded parking lots). Brett Sparks, who writes the music, draws from medieval melody, country-politan string arrangements, tin-pan alley crooners, & dusty hillbilly records to weave together the fabric of this record. Rennie Sparks, who writes the lyrics, makes magical realism from polar adventure stories, turn-of-the-century electricity wars, pagan hunting songs & her own time spent (like most people) riding up elevators, staring out hotel room windows, & driving interstate highways. The inspiration for the words in these songs comes from Rennie"s belief that not only does our present world feel like the last days of wonder, but that human life has always felt just this way: full of a sense of impending doom & inevitable self-destruction, but simultaneously steeped in the sacred, the infinite, the impenetrable, the ever-wondrous. Brett"s musical
compositions & recording process were hybrids of the old & the new; the real & the fake; the analog & the digital. The album is full of such ancient & modern anomalies: analog compressors, vintage instruments & condenser mics, all drawn into the digital world of computer recording. Pedal steel parts were e-mailed from Chicago (Stephen Dorocke-FREAKWATER & JESSE SYKES) & musical saw part sent from London (DAVID COULTER-TEST DEPT, POGUES, TOM WAITS). "Last Days" travels from swamps & caves to laboratories & bowling alleys, always celebrating the mystery & madness in love. The songs explain who's hanging shoes on telephone wires, why automatic sinks in airports sometimes don't see your hands, & why The Handsome Family refuses to go to Heaven unless flies can come too. Also, a tender tale of Tesla's last days: his love for wounded pigeons & his ability to explode light bulbs with his mind. Rennie is eaten by a wild boar. Brett threatens to pull the stars down from the sky. A record of love songs in the true Romantic sense.

There sounds from past and present-tense waltz together to a never-ending melody that flickers between folk, jazz, blues and pop. Kane, Jonathan
I Looked At The Sun (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US His follow-up to the rollicking, majestic, and critically acclaimed debut, "February" is a bare-knuckled knock-out punch. "Rocks! Great Southern-fried looped blues-rock. Like Steve Reich if all he listened to was Muddy Waters and Zeppelin" - Dusted. "Down-home grooves shine with an orchestral, massed-guitar luster that's often associated with Glenn Branca and Kane's frequent collaborator Rhys Chatham. Layered electric and acoustic sounds create overtones that trick the listener into hearing non-existent organs and harmonicas. In place of the mind-boggling beats for which he's known, Kane underpins these drones with a deceptively simple, forcefully executed shuffle. His swinging opuses exude bright, earthy euphony instead of dark, cerebral dissonance. Rarely does the avant-garde rock this hard" - Time Out NY.

PS, US The third album from this Chicago band contains thirteen songs clocking in at thirty-six minutes. "Amanda and Joe Ziemba are a married rock duo who'll never be as big as The White Stripes but have a better sweater drawer. Joe sings punk, Amanda sings pretty, finishing each other's lines" - Spin. "The songs are played with go-for-broke ferocity: Joe tears at the syllables, Amanda crushes the beats, and yet the melodies never melt despite the heated environs. The songs are as sturdy and resilient as the characters in Ziemba's narratives. Hanging on for dear life as the world blitzes past in two-minute bursts" - Chicago Tribune. "The Ziembas never sound like just two people: they play tight power-pop as if they had an extra person or two. In fact, they sound closer to The Spinanes than to The White Stripes, and closer still to twice-their-size groups like Weezer" - Pitchfork.

Having since escaped Philadelphia for retreat in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey; Wind and Water is a meticulously focused reflection of these new surroundings while keeping echoes of their past haunts close at hand. The sounds on Wind and Water are both moving and breathing, and crumbling and decomposing, often within a single track. It is at times ominous and foreboding and other times hopeful and calming. It is within these elements that Loess finds a sense of balance. The album suggests a new respect for the two elements that embody these balances; the Wind and Water. for fans of : casino versus japan, boards of Canada.

Loud Family with Anton Barbeau
What If It Works? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 11TH)
PS, US Recording five acclaimed albums for Alias Records during the 1990s, the Loud Family, featuring Scott Miller and an ever-changing cast of musicians, made some of the best pop music of the decade. Aimee Mann (who told Pulse magazine's Brett Milano that Scott Miller is "the best songwriter out there right now") and Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt (who raved about the Loud Family's "gloriously catchy hooks" in Time Out New York) hand-picked the Loud Family to open for them on tour. Members of the band's rabid Internet fan base traveled from all over the United States to catch their shows, flying, in some cases, several thousand miles to see them. Initially, Scott called it quits after the LF's final Alias release, 2000's "Attractive Nuisance." But he has finally been coaxed out of retirement to record "What If It Works?," which features the newest member of the Loud Family, Sacramento power pop hero Anton Barbeau is best known for his collaboration with England's Bevis Frond, "King of Missouri"). "What If It Works?" features several originals as well as dynamic covers of the Rolling Stones' "Rocks Off," the Zombies' "Remember You" and Cat Stevens' "I Think I See The Light."

Manyfingers
Our Worn Shadow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 6TH)
PS, SPAIN 8 tracks. Manyfingers (aka multi-instrumentalist Chris Cole) emerged out of the shady and mysterious Bristol scene that spawned the likes of Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone, Third Eye Foundation and Amp. Previously best known as Third Eye Foundation luminary Matt Elliott's right hand man, cellist and drinking buddy, Cole has also been a sometime member of legendary pastoralists Movietone as well as being the current drummer of the excellent post rock band Soeza. Cole's relative obscurity is set to change with the release of his full lenght debut album 'Our Worn Shadow' - a magnificently ambitious multi layered gem of a record. He plays piano, drums, cello, Spanish guitar, accordion, vibraphone and other assorted instruments to create a veritable whirlwind of sound. The record takes its cue from the Fourtet of 'Pause' and 'Rounds' (taking in along the way influence from US based hip hop futurists Dosh and Machine Drum) but adds Yann Tiersen style accordion and string arrangements played with the intensity of Godspeed You Black Emperor! at their ground shaking best. The cyclical motifs of Philip Glass and Steve Reich are notable ensuring that the album presses all the right neo classical buttons - often comparable to the best work of Max Richter, Rachel's, Sylvain Chauveaux and Terry Reilly. Its an album of opposites - the mournful accordions and weeping cello's recall the melancholy of Matt Elliott's recent 'Drinking Songs' yet when a female vocal is introduced on the excellent standout 'For Measured Shores', the effect is somewhat like a gallic late period Blonde Redhead. The record is impressive for the variety of melody and sounds produced, the consistently imaginative string and horn arrangements, subtle sampling and frenzied, frenetic drumming. Following the hullabaloo over recent records by the likes of Fourtet, Caribou and Diplo, Manyfingers is far and away the best Englishman to take on the baton and run with it into genuinely new and exciting places. 'Our Worn Shadow' is more than a new dawn for post rock, folktronica, electronica, neo classical or whatever you want to call it - its a life changing record that ultimately defies categorization.

The M's released their debut Polyvinyl album "Future Women" just last month. Dr. Dog are entering the studio to record the follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Easy Beat". "The four M's call Chicago home, but with their fuzzy riffs and psychedelic melodies, they could be mistaken for a bunch of British tunesmiths by the names of Ray Davies, Damon Albarn, Marc Bolan, and John Lennon" - Spin. "Not that any great band really comes from anywhere or anything, but HOLY FUCK where did these guys [Dr. Dog] come from?" - Fader.

My Cat Is An Alien
Cosmic Light Of The Third Millenium (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US Like some kind of droned out Sun Ra, My Cat Is An Alien landed and stayed only long enough to drop off the masters and the artwork at Important Records before vanishing into the cosmos, or Torino, once again. This new full-length album recorded April 2005 at MCIAA's Alien Zone, located in a remote region of the Western Alps, Piemonte, Italy. The work consists of three tracks entitled "Section I-II-III" for a total lenght of 49:20 minutes. Here the Opalio space-brothers push their improvised music of the Spheres in new cosmic territories, where the use of Roberto's wordless vocals impresses a still unheard lyricism inside the sublime complexity of their unique musical textures. "Section I" opens the album with a slow and emotional epic crescendo generated by floating waves of electric space-guitars alongside glittering sounds of mini-xylophone and toy piano; this impressive astral monochord-blues increase leads to a denouement of electronics & cymbals storm. Whispered wordless moaning vocals and sparse rythmic percussions resonating in the distance open "Section II", where the celestial explosion is followed by droning walls of guitar sounds and space-toys effects, lost in a vertical streamline of astral debris. An ambient minimal guitar tune introduces the final "Section III": reiterated and limpid single guitar chords disclose the enlightened beauty of the Cosmos. In "Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium" MCIAA's mystic alien chants celebrate the beginning and the coming of a new era of the CosmicLight. My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA) is the improv duo formed by the brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio from Torino, Italy. They both primarily play electric and acoustic guitars, various toy-instruments and voice toy-microphones, percussions. Since forming in late 1997, they started up releasing several cdr and vinyl on their own Opax Records label, whose unique handmade art-packaging style represents the aesthetics of the duo, since the Opalios are involved in music as well as in painting, photography and audiovisual installations. MCIAA's debut recording immediately thrilled Sonic Youth and two months later the two brothers made their live debut as support to SY 1998 Italian tour. During the past six years MCIAA have been invited several times to perform live at Sonic Youth European tours, Kim Gordon and Jim O'Rourke's solo shows. In 2002 MCIAA took part to the Torino BIG (International Biannual Of Young Artists) curated by Christian Marclay. In 2005 MCIAA toured Europe as special line-up of Jackie-O Motherfucker with founder Tom Greenwood, and performed in Italy with Keiji Haino; MCIAA performed at the "Music Lovers' Field Companion" festival at the Sage Gateshead in Newcastle (UK), at the CCA (Center of Contemporary Arts) festival in Glasgow with Jandek and Keiji Haino, and to the "Cosmopolis" festival in Lisbon with Rafael Toral.

Nectarine No. 9, The
It's Just The Way Things Are Joe, It's Just The Way Things Are(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 2ND)
PS, UK Reissue. A compilation of works from their first 3 albums, recorded for legendary Scottish labels Postcard & Creeping Bent. A Sea With Three Stars: Postcard (1993) Saint Jack: Postcard (1995) Fried For Blue Material: Creeping Bent (1998) These three albums have long been deleted, so it was felt that Creeping Bent's "It's Just The Way Things Are Joe..." primer should resurface these post-post punk nuggets. The 7th of May, 1977: This is the date when everything changed forever, as the Clash's "White Riot" tour hit Edinburgh. However, it wasn't the Clash that connected with a bunch of teenage punks in the audience who would go on to form the fulcrum of "the sound of young Scotland", it was Vic Godard & the Subway Sect. Their ramshackle grey-glare/treble-to-the-max guitar sound was THE major influence on Postcard Record's "Orange Juice" & "Josef K", and Fast Product's "Fire Engines". The Fire Engines leader, DAVY HENDERSON, has actively carried the torch for Vic, with Godard continuing to make his influence felt on Henderson's work with THE NECTARINE No.9 over the past 10 years.

Radio Dept.
Pet Grief (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 2ND)
PS, SWEDEN "Pet grief" is a completely different album than the debut "Lesser Matters". You'll hear from the very first chord that you're listening to The Radio Dept. The mood is darker, more epic, grander and even more beautiful than ever. "Pet grief" is the best songs Pet Shop Boys never wrote and the album you'd hoped. My Bloody Valentine did after "Loveless". The key to what makes it so special, what makes it all sound so much like The Radio Dept. might be the ever present melancholy that permeate everything they write. It's been three years since the debut album "Lesser matters" was released (two since it was released by XL in the UK) and even if the band has released two Eps, "Pulling our weight" (2003) and "This past week" (2005) since that "Pet grief" is definitely the most anticipated Swedish album in a very, very long time.

Rauhan Orkestri/Lauhkeat Lampaat
Sylissain oot (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, CANADA RAUHAN ORKESTERI (Peace Orchestra)/LAUHKEAT LAMPAAT (Meek Sheep) CD originally released on LP in 2005 on Italian label, QBICO; ten pieces of free-improv-folk-jazz from Finland, with a distinctive foundation of playful vigor and heartening spirit. It's an organic improv session that breathes countryside air, sensing the grass between its toes. Not including several self-released 7"s and limited edition CD-Rs, this is the PEACE ORCHESTRA's second full length. It illustrates a great progression and a newly acquired, absolutely beautiful sense of restraint. The members of this quartet play off each other magically, leaving room for the microscopic details to shine through. Deeply routed in the incestuous Finnish pych-folk-experimental scene, the family tree of this four-piece has many branches, including the duo, LAUHKEAT LAMPAAT who are peppered throughout this release. These pieces are differentiated by higher timbres and a slightly more tongue-in-cheek air (They are also distinguished by the asterisk in the song listing) RAUHAN ORKESTERI has to be one of Europe's most exciting new free jazz outfits, filled with a rarely encountered joyful energy floating on a fantastic search into the free realms of the outer possibilities of sound. No cause for intellectual drama here, Antti Tolvi, Ville Jolanki (reeds), Jaakko Tolvi (percussion) and Tero Kemppainen (bass) need no more then the direct physical contact between body and instrument for their sonic onslaughts that in no time go from hectic outbursts to warm and mellow soft blows.

Starlight Mints
Drowaton (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US A group of beautiful pop mutants: 4 singular musical minds whose love for archetypal pop music & AM radio has provided, over the course of 2 previous acclaimed albums, a rock solid foundation for a whole bunch of inspired unusualness, all baked to perfection under the hot Oklahoman sun. Rather than coming off progishly, the band's blend of classic string arrangements, cheeky boyish vocals, catchy melody and ornate surrealism is a pleasure, you might call it bubblegum psych.

"The 'Hope St.' tour was among the most successful we have undertaken in recent years and I don't just mean from the point of view of attendances, although those were encouragingly up as well. What happened was everyone played better, laughed more and generally had more fun on the road than we'd had in ages. It really was a shame when the whole thing stopped." - Jake Burns.

Stills, The
Without Feathers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US On their second release, Montreal's The Stills are back with a refreshed outlook and bold new take on their unique sound. Songwriter and drummer Dave Hamelin dropped his drumsticks to share vocal and guitar duties with Tim Fletcher. Also, touring keyboardist Liam O'Neil is now a permanent member, adding classic Hammond organ and lush piano to the new sound. Re-invigorated, the band invited friends and fellow Canadians to plug in and contribute. The resulting album is fearless, filled with brutally honest songwriting and a big, organic rock sound. Neil Young might have called this the "ragged glory" of a pop-rock band. Gone are the boys. This album has stubble.

Tender Trap
6 Billion People (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US 10 songs. Twenty years on from the NME's legendary C86 cassette, with anniversary shows featuring key artists planned at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts and a Bob Stanley-produced documentary in the works, Tender Trap's new album is striking proof that some of the original protagonists of that movement are still making intelligent and engaging pop music. As lead singer of the seminal Talulah Gosh, the proto-riot grrrl Heavenly and the classy pop act Marine Research, Amelia Fletcher was the voice and face that launched a thousand fanzines, an iconic presence whose influence can be traced in bands as diverse as Le Tigre and Belle and Sebastian. Together with her cohort in the latter two of those bands, Rob Pursey (guitar), and Marine Research drummer John Stanley aka DJ Downfall (bass), Tender Trap formed in 2001, releasing one album to date, the coolly electronic 'Film Molecules'. With the addition of the crisp drumming of The Magnetic Fields' Claudia Gonson, '6 Billion People' marks a move away from the pared-down approach of its predecessor towards a sound recalling the best of the band's previous incarnations. This is immediately evident on the big chorused title track, Rob Pursey's sub-sonic backing vocals uncannily reminiscent of erstwhile collaborator Calvin Johnson, while recent single 'Talking Backwards' is a pop rush of shimmering guitars and mellifluous vocals and 'I Would Die For You' marries a chugging rhythm to an ethereal melody. The short-but-spiky 'Applecore' ups the sass quotient as Amelia demands answers from an indecisive lover to a series of oblique questions over a stop-start bassline, whereas the spacey-keyboard sounds of 'Fahrenheit 451', the heartfelt '(I Always Love You When I'm) Leaving You' and the haunting album closer 'Dead and Gone' lend the album variety and depth. '6 Billion People' is Tender Trap's most fully realized work to date, a collection of sumptuous tunes and bold arrangements that makes a claim to be one of the best pop albums of the year. Perfect for fans of The Concretes, The Magnetic Fields, Le Tigre, and C86 indiepop. In a nicer parallel universe, Amelia Fletcher is the most influential artist of her day. -NME

After that, TI get housed French style by Alan Braxe and Fred Falke on "What's Your Damage" like it's the second coming of Erasure. Things get all dizzy and grimy with the Jitset reworking of "Catch It", and the Statik remix of "Circle.Square.Triangle". Up and coming US producer Spank Rock also applies some dirty bass and some poison to "Circle.Square.Triangle". Does it sound like a crazy mess? It is.

Three More Shallows
Monkey vs Shark (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US Bonus tracks on this the domestic release. "Monkey vs. Shark" is the latest release from one of San Francisco's brightest indie bands, Thee More Shallows. 2005 was a breakout year for Dee Kesler and company as their full length record, "More Deep Cuts" (Turn Records), was universally praised as being dark, sinister, epic and fresh, as well as being hailed by many as one of the best records of the year, and landing them on nation-wide tours along-side John Vanderslice, 31 Knots, Jim Yoshii Pile Up and more. "Monkey vs. Shark" is a new collection of songs that pick up where "More Deep Cuts" leaves off, almost like an appendix to the album. Moody, intense, layered indie rock songs with a hint of paranoia and Kesler's hushed vocals that drag you into the deep end. The 7 song EP includes their stark rendition of Al Green's "I Can't Get Next To You" which was first performed on BBC 1 in the UK and has been described as "a beautiful soul song...with the soul sucked out of it," as well as a new version of "Freshman Thesis" (originally appearing on "More Deep Cuts") remixed by Odd Nodsam and Why? (Anticon). Sitting at the songwriting helm is Dee (David) Kesler, Sitting at the songwriting helm is Dee (David) Kesler, joined by Chavo Fraser and Jason Gonzales sharing drums, samples, keyboards, and bass. Vega, Alan & Revolutionary Corps Of Teenage Jesus
Righteous Lite (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 2ND)
PS, UK Reissue. Vega came to prominence with Mercer Arts savants, the legendary Suicide. For many, the debut Suicide album is one of the touchstone recordings of the 1970's, and still sounds harrowing to this day.RIGHTEOUS LITE sees Vega reconvene with former Altered Image and Black Grape producer Stephen Lironi. Vega & Lironi first worked together on a 12" techno remix of the Suicide classic, "Frankie Teardrop", which went on to become a NME Single of the Week when that accolade actually meant something in sales terms.Righteous Lite is the sound of urban paranoic New York blues that is Vega's forte, and is positively harrowing. It follows on from the recent "Daddy Died - A Brooklyn Nightmare" maxi-EP, which featured remixes by Vega devotees such as Mongoose, Future Pilot AKA, Fire Engines / The Nectarine No9's Davy Henderson (t/a The Measurement of Souls), SSD, etc.

A largely improvised record. "The recording style is: get the mics set & start recording," Verlaine says, "edit the mistakes & erase the stuff you don't like." This freewheeling style allows their raw talents to shine through, while showcasing the cohesion of a trio that's been playing together for years.

Verlaine, Tom
Songs & Other Things (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US This finds his songwriting at its most colorful. According to Tom, "Lovebird asylum seeker" got its inspiration from a "picture of some friendly insects walking across a dusty desk & spelling out letters." The opening track is an instrumental, "like an introduction; what you hear at the beginning of a movie." For him, the songwriting process is natural, with ebbs & flows that he makes sure not to force. With 25 years in between this & his last vocal record, he has a lot of storytelling to catch up on, which makes every track here a true gem.

Vetiver
To Find Me Gone (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
Ps, US The album that herald's Andy Cabic as one of the current generation's finest songwriters. While touring the world as a member of DEVENDRA BANHART's band, Andy has expanded Vetiver into full on singer/songwriter project. Songs of remembrance & recollection while embodying the duality of presence & absence. Musically, there's a dreamy Topanga Canyon vibe on select songs (maybe that's the pedal steel calling on "No One Word"), and thereÕs also plenty of crunchy candy for those who have appreciated Cabic's recent nod toward the magic of '70s-era Fleetwood Mac (check out the screaming guitar outro of "Red Lantern Girls"). Yet everything is simply, amazingly Vetiver, not anything else; To Find Me Gone is Andy Cabic's own original statement, one that many will consider as one of the finest albums of 2006.

Year Of
Slow Days (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, US A soft humming. A clarinet from a distance. Disconnected sounds, searching, waiting. With "Mantra" "Slow Days" begins as expected - at least with regard to this line up. BERNARD FLEISCHMANN, CHRISTOF KURZMANN, PAUL KLING (aka Burkhard Stangl), Martin Siewert and Werner Dafeldecker are all together experimentalists of beats and sounds, trained in post-Jazz and improvisation, noisy, fragile, encoded. It sounds exactly like that what people like to call art. And in Vienna one is able to achieve this in a very special, hearty way. "Slow Days" has actually become a hearty, heartwarming record. A pop album, that certainly is a small surprise. Already the polymorph "mantra" finishes after one and a half minutes in a songwriter's intimacy. The five have already left a slight presentiment on Bernhard Fleischmann's album "Welcome tourist" (Morr 2002), "take your time" was the name of the track. "sleep" was another track on "Welcome tourist", an electronic track back then, garnished only with Christof Kurzmann's voice. For "slow days" it has become a chamber music inspirited country song, a chamber that permits a view on the sunset, with fainting guitars, a vibraphone, with warm distortions. "Don't get me wrong, it's just a song" sings Christof Kurzmann very close to your ear. Maybe it is even closer than that.

5 Years (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Venerable duo's first release since 2001's Lammergeier. After recording and releasing nearly twenty albums between 1990 and 2001, Richard Youngs and Simon Wickham-Smith attempt an opposite approach to music making-an annual meeting to record a solitary ten-minute track. The resulting songs, each named for an intervening year, show the duo remarkably unaffected by the elapsed half-decade. Their signature mix of electronically treated percussion, ululating noise, and hand-on-the-knob tweaking continues to adapt "real human" instrumental expression to musique concrete sensibilities. First album in 5 years!
