Parasol New Arrivals • May 16, 2006

Hi all,

This week you’ll find tight new releases from Twilight Singers, Boris, The Knife (LP), Camera Obscura, and much more. Our good buddy, Mr. Golden Sun has decided to make a special appearance today here, in Champaign-Urbana. We've already kicked off the celebration with five cups of over-caffeinated coffee and a special CD of Smiths songs unearthed from one of the ghosts of Parasol's past. As many of you know, you are always welcome to come in and shop live and in real time at Parasol HQ. Email or call for directions to our neck of the woods in sleepy Urbana.

If you haven't already, please get yourself a copy of The Coral Sea's "Volcano And Heart". This is a record which just keeps getting better with each listen.

Well alrighty then,

Royal/Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week
Espers - I I CD $12.33 15% off (Drag City)
From the beginning, this has been a living, growing thing. This album finds the group at sextet size, with greater powers & capabilities then before. The sound is achieved using a mad variety of instruments, from a standard Martin 6 string acoustic, Fender jazz bass & drum kit to more exotic implements such as doumbek, dholak & male & female larynx. The outcome is a friendly new sensation, it warms the room & dims the lights with dense yet agile atmospherics, still in communion with the realities of our present day.
Jim's Pick: Best New Music from Scandinavia
Montys Loco - Man Overboard CD $11.48 15% off (NONS)
One of this year's most beautiful and bizarre albums! 'Man Overboard' from Swedish female duo Montys Loco starts out spectral and crystalline but in no time the hip-swinging girl-group smile-pop of "Give Me More" draws you in. But it's the fact that "Give Me More" is about addiction in its myriad forms and the edgy darkness and sultry spite of title track "Man Overboard" and the incendiary "Accident" that keep this from being your basic Swede-pop romp or Concretes-clone or Bjork-wannabe. It's not any of these. It is outlandish and enamoring, it is produced by the studio-genius Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn And John) and it does come across like some sleepy, hyper-sensual sonic otherworld that we are lucky enough to visit, but do you want to live here? You just might… Nifty packaging too!… Click here to check out Jim's new and improved Scandinavian music page, updated every other day or so. Plenty of sound samples and a bit more detail than you get in the regular update.

Boris
Pink
PS, US These new recordings effectively combine all the strongest elements of what they are capable of into one solid, complete, concise album. It's mega-drone, balls- out punk rock, extreme dark psychedelia & 70s' fuzzed out acid rock. The clincher is an infusion of ultra-catchy melodicism into their already heavy foundation. There's infectious vocal melodies that combined with intelligent song-writing create a solidified, undeniable union. It comes with a die-cut cover that when opened reveals 3 perforated acid-tab cards.

Boyracer
Punker Than You Since '92
PS, US DOUBLE 'BEST OF' 75 SONG RETROSPECTIVE. Since the early 1990s Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson. Armed with a selection of fuzzboxes and a carefree revolving door line up, Boyracer have been carefully crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off frantic slithers of adrenaline punk-pop. Noted recordings on numerous indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland, and brutally honest sweaty live performances have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre. This double disc set, on the band's own 555 Recordings label, features 75 selections from their exhaustive back catalogue. The tracks chosen (by Stewart) span the band's global history from Leeds, UK to Flagstaff, Arizona, via stints in Japan and Australia. Forever embracing the DIY ethic to excess, Boyracer are known for their completists nightmare of a back catalogue, (with nearly 500 songs on commercially available releases to date). "Punker Than You Since '92" includes much of the band's best known and strongest material coupled with long out of print tracks, (including the impossible to find debut 7" unavailable anywhere since it's release in 1992). There are tracks from strictly limited releases too, such as 2005's lathe cut 10" LP (which was a pressing of 75 copies worldwide). The compilation is a welcome round-up for diehards, a chance to fill in some gaps for the casual observer, and is also a perfect introduction for the new and curious to one of indiepop's longest standing and respected bands. Disc One 2001-2006: 1. A History Of Snakes, 2. They're Making Money Off You, 3. Who Pissed On Yr Bonfire?, 4. 2nd Hand Youth, 5. 9 To 5 Style, 6. Lou And Ged, 7. 90s Are Thru, 8. Brandtson
Hello, Control!
PS, US Having already exceeded the shelf-life of the average indie rock band by a few years, a series of tours, and a handful of albums, Brandtson could have used the departure of original bassist John Sayre as their moment to shake hands, congratulate each other on a race well run, and ride off into the Cleveland sunset with their reputation and legacy intact. But just as a brush with death can cause some people to live their lives with a newfound purpose, Brandtson found a new bassist, regrouped, and agreed to shake off all of the trappings of comfort and complacency that can cripple a band that has been writing songs together for eight years, creating their boldest, most immediate, and most dynamic album in the process. Brandtson demoed nearly 50 of the most electronic-infused, yet soulful songs they've ever written for what was to become Hello, Control. They went into the studio, inspired by Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, and the idea of breaking out of the norm and challenging what's comfortable. Welcome to Brandtson's second act.

Play to My Own Tune
PS, US "A modern Brian Wilson, the illegitimate child of Elton John & Donald Fagan, Godley & Cream's younger brother...the trademarks of the Bunny experience are beautiful introspective songs laced w/a 70's pop sound." Acutely personal, mostly autobiographical & unashamedly emotional contents. Underneath the complex arrangements & layered vocals lie dreamy, beautifully crafted pop songs.

Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken
PS, SPAIN On the 7" vinyl release of "Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken", limited to 3000 copies, the exclusive B-side is "I can't stay mad at you" (a cover version of country singer Skeeter Davis): a drum-less melody with great vocal harmonies and beautiful keyboard arrangements. The band recorded the album track in Sweden with the help of producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, THE ONCRETES) and a great team of people with whom they've worked in the country's best studios: some of the string musicians have recently toured with Brian Wilson or Arthur Lee & LOVE.

Cherubs

PS, US Playful arpeggios, call & response, kitschy little flourishes dosey-do around each other on twin guitar lines, as a keenly observant drummer jumps from lullabies to punk freak-outs with epileptic speed. Narratives of rejection & desire. Unassuming, charming & inventive, consistently upbeat enough to ensure prime dance-floor exposure in the indie clubs all summer - breaking heels at least, if not boundaries.

Controlling
The Famous Automatic City
PS, US Produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, the Locust), the disc is a concept album that attempts to immerse the listener in the frenetic pace one experiences living in Los Angeles, touching on a variety of desperate cosmopolitan themes involving driving, dreams and that great equalizer: death. According to singer/guitarist Max Hellmann, CTF's goal is to "Challenge the listener, but not to a point where [the music is] unlistenable.

Cub Country
Lucky Knife
Ps, US Feat. members & ex-members of JETS TO BRAZIL, HELMET, RIVAL SCHOOLS, MAPLEWOOD, THE LOVE SCENE & NEW END ORIGINAL. Sad-eyed & surreal Americana sonnets emerge. While recent years have found Chatelain sharing the stage with a number of companions, it's still his twangy ruminations on life's great mysteries that render heart-touchingly close-delivering songs that can be as personal & intimate as the tiny bedroom they were recorded in.

Dargel, Corey
Less Famous Than You
PS, UK Composer, lyricist, and singer Corey Dargel's gentle assault on the pop idiom creates a tension which pervades his music: Deadpan and detached vocals reveal heartbreaking intimacies, awkward and obtrusive drum patterns struggle against fragile harmonies, vocals and music uneasily opposing each other as songs stumble to their ends. Emotional and intelligent, his songs evoke the fragility of Antony & The Johnsons and The Hidden Cameras , the electronic works of the late Macon Sumerlin, and the avant-pop approaches of Mark Amerika and Arthur Russell. Voted one of Time Out New York's "Top 25 People To Watch In 2006," Dargel's live performances have received glowing reviews in the New York Times and the Village Voice.

Dominique A
L'horizon
PS, SPAIN"La rue monte en lacets / Chaque virage se mérite..." ("The street goes up in loops / Every bend is earned ...") These words that open L'horizon, the new album by DOMINIQUE A, summarizes well the course of a man who is not used to follow the straight lines. DOMINIQUE A is an explorer. Each one of his records has been earned. Curiosity was needed to go deep in La fossete, his first album from 1992, which has become through the years in a reference for the trend that shook the French chanson, opening the road to a new generation of artists. We are not in reviewing DOMINIQUE A's discography here again. But, in ivestigation, in analysis, the man formely from Nantes has always wrong-footed his predecessor album. After La Memoire Neuve and the hit "Le Twenty-Two Bar", included in it, came the dryness of Remué, and afterwards the brighter Auguri, the result of his first work with the renowned producer John Parish. After Tout Sera Comme Avant, very arranged and explorer, we have now the purity, the clarity and the lyricism of L'horizon. And both of them can leave you astonished. With this kind of quiet cheek, DOMINIQUE A takes a new advantage over the rest of the people. He neither renounces nor comes back. He only makes his own way and this brand new record is another territory to walk on withoutgetting tired. His voice, that one time seemed difficult to place, sets free. Behind his faithful guitar, a subtle piano, some concise metal arrangements and fascinating choirs take over here and there. Dominique A is a melancholic man, but his melancholy is as essential as the sea border. A melancholywhich becomes impregnated in "L'horizon" with twilight atmospheres, of joyful lyrical fliers. As French chanson sinks in its effort of looking at the everyday life, DOMINIQUE A blows air into it, and opens huge spaces for it. He invents bizarre adventures, moving stories submitted to the demand of his writing, which spreads out, goes deep, tells and dreams. "Tous les chants sont d'oublis / Ou ne sont que foutaises / Si la vie est jolie / Qu'on setaise." ("All chants are about oblivion / or are but trinkets / if life is beautiful / let's keep our mouths shut"). "L'horizon" is full of literary references, of rough pictures, fugitive loves, perturbing memories from the childhood, distilled as a hallucinated vision of reality. And attached to all this there is a new chapter in the French chanson, which with no doubt -we can bet- will leave a deep mark.

Life Without Fear
PS, US As unexpected as Jim O'Rourke's embrace of John Fahey's music a decade ago. Droning, guitar-picked porch blues blend with whiskey-soaked vocals, voodoo jazz, & throbbing electronics while low hums rub up against scraped strings & a buzzed-out harmonica heard through a tin-can. This is rough-hewn experimental bluestronica mixed with graveyard dirt.

Existensminimum
Last Night My Head Tried To Explode And I Wrote Everything Down (DELAYED)
PS, SWEDEN First full-length from Swedish studio-wizard/uber-producer Magnus Henriksson AKA Existensminimum, who's also a member of Moneybrother. On the heels of two amazing singles ("From Me To You" and "Running Down Everyone") this album is even more surreal and adventuresome. Looking beyond the frame of modern day rock and pop, Existensminimum offers a lightspeed trip through modern electro pop, Spiritualized-styled guitar-drone, neo-romantic crooner ballads and anxious deconstructed rock. All the while harkening back to the heady daze of 70s Krautrock's sci-fi explorations and cosmic communal folk, along with the brash noisy pop of England in the late 80s, early 90s. Not that far removed from a Silverbullit/Citizen Bird release...

Frank And Walters, The
Best Of: Special Edition CD+DVD
PS, US The Frank and Walters signed to Setanta Records in 1991. The Frank's first hit single 'After All' from 'Trains, Boats & Planes' resulted with the band's first appearance on Top Of The Pops. The second album 'Grand Parade' was described by NME as "The jauntiest of melodic joys" with tracks like 'Colours' (featured on Tom Dunne's Alternative Irish Anthems), propelling The Franks to new heights. With Noel Gallagher as their roadie and supported by Suede & Radiohead the band toured the world and gained a loyal following with their energetic live shows, infectious melodies and seemingly irrepressible happiness. Written in New York, 'Beauty Becomes More Than Life' was described by NME as "A lost classic for the 21st century." Following the release of 'Glass' in 2001 the band took a break from recording & gigging. In early 2005, the band began writing again and signed to FIFA Records. A new triple album titled 'Souvenirs' was released internationally in October 2005. The release was followed by a sold out tour of Ireland & the UK and a nomination for 'Best Irish Album' in the Meteor Irish Music Awards 2006. 'Souvenirs' is widely seen to emphasise the genius of The Frank and Walter's ability to write about the ordinary and make it something to aspire to. To celebrate the bands 15th year in music, FIFA will be re-printing a number of special edition CD's and Vinyl's. The first 'Special Edition' is a reprint of the Frank And Walters 'Best Of' including a free DVD of the bands videos and a short documentary on the band (approx running time 1 hour). CD: Colours, Plenty Times, Fashion Crisis Hits New York, This Is Not A Song, How Can I Exist, New York, After All, Walters Trip, Indian Ocean, Underground, Daisy Chain, Time We Said Goodnight, Tony Cochrane. DVD: Colours, Plenty Times, Indian Ocean, Underground, This Is Not A Song, After All, Documentary (featuring interviews, live songs and concert footage).

Fujimoto, Yuichiro
The Mountain Record
PS, US Yuichiro Fujimoto was born in 1981 and lives in Urayasu Chiba, Japan. He has already released two critically acclaimed albums in the last years and managed to established a very unique style. his songs are little, open poems, describing a small moment like a haiku does. the compositions are simple-structured, but in this loose way of playing lies the strength of fujimoto's work. This openess allows the music to create rooms, situations, to establish an atmosphere beyond the notes played. and this what yuichiro does on "the mountain record" in a most beautiful way. The nine songs all approach this aim in a different way. the opening song "listen to november steps" gets by with just a few notes and a soft humming - already indicating that complexity is not the goal of this work. the pauses between the notes are at least as important as the notes itself on this cd. still this album has a variety of approaches to offer ranging from paino, pure nature-recordings to electronic editing. this work creates wonderful little sceneries which are still open enough that you sometimes might not even recognize it as music. apart from making music yuichiro fujimoto is a gifted photographer. the 12-sided booklet offers an insight in his way capturing scenes as images, closely related to his way of making music.

Glass Eye
Every Woman's Fantasy
PS, US After a LONG wait, it's the NEW (OLD) GLASS EYE ALBUM fans have been awaiting for 13 long, long years! While working on guitarist KATHY MCCARTY's (cf. her album of Daniel Johnston covers "Dead Dog's Eyeball") new album, they dug up the old tapes, and were finally inspired to polish it up for release, though not TOO much polish. The dark loopiness & jagged edges, surely the products of their collapsing record deal in 1993, are here in all their glory. Songs leap from their embedded but balmy trademark pop hooks & veer off toward the rough & the weird, musical Hunter S. Thompson territory really. The things that made them lovable standouts of the mid to late-80's hot Austin scene, even among a peer group that included musical genius like Scratch Acid, Butthole Surfers, True Believers, & Reivers, are all still there, but hearing this album now, I can't help but feel with the addition of the McCarty songs that ended up on her earlier solo album instead, this would have been a cherry on top of the Austin sundae. Perhaps not a more "mature" work as the cliche' goes, but certainly a look into the darker recesses of the weird GE soul that we're happy to have finally.

Guthrie, Robin
Continental
PS, US As COCTEAU TWINS guitarist and producer, Robin Guthrie is the man responsible for creating that famous sound and opening the door for My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, et al. Continental is Robin's strongest all-instrumental bliss out, or make out, record since Cocteau Twins. Robin gives more heart and soul on Continental than on his previous instrumental release Imperial. Continental is more focused, stronger in feeling, and in composition. Of course all of Robin's signature elements are here: Shimmering guitars, ethereal moods as fluid and deep as any of Eno's, and yes, he does at times thankfully bring the rock. The mood overall is classic Robin Guthrie. Fans of the Cocteau Twins and all they've spawned, please welcome back your daddy. This is the first of four new Robin Guthrie records. Robin's music is a treasure. He's one of the great all-time heroes of the current bliss pop generationTrack list: 1. Continental, 2. Conquering the Romantic, 3. Crescent, 4. Monument, 5. Amphora, 6. After growing up on a diet of 90's lo-fi, old blues & the Harry Smith Anthology, he bought a 4 track & began wrapping his folkish guitar music in a cloud of effects & electronic noises under sparse lyrics that are a mix of broken English & unintelligible mantras. Songs are built up while played, captured on tape & then all effects are immediately wiped never to be duplicated. A simple but extraordinary sound.

Inch-Time
As The Moon Draws Water
PS, UK With his latest album "As The Moon Draws Water" Australian artist Stefan Panczak confirms his place as a key figure in underground electronica, combining minimal beats with such diverse influences as jazz, folk and World music to create a wholly unique and organic sound. Expect to hear some sparkling, chiming and seductive electronica that's as subtle and beautiful as it is impossible to resist... Inch-time's last sold out single was raved about by retailers from boomkat to smallfish and "Icicles & Snowflakes / Almond Eyes" was chosen as a DJ mag SUREPLAYER. Inch-time's debut album 'Any colour you Like' was released as ltd CD in Europe by Static Caravan to heaps of praise. Placing it amongst the top 15 electronica releases of 2006, The Wire reviewed the album as "a luminous collection of music that deserves a wider hearing. "Panczak is blessed with a marvellously unhurried sense of placement and these pieces unfurl with an almost ceremonious poise. "Kyoto" proves the point, counter pointing trembling pizzicatos with a wistfully circular arrangement for string quartet and calmly conjuring a richly melancholy atmosphere without the faintest hint of gimmickry". For fans of the spekk, expanding, Type and ECM labels and prime period Tortoise. This is micro-electronica , freak out samples, orchestral string arrangements and dubs all conducted with a post rock mind set for the listener's pleasure.

In Sunday Songs
PS, US Based in NY, the name refers to the interplay of ones & zeros of the digital age. Catchy pop that balances the shimmering synth sounds of Autumn P Proemm's keyboard & voice with forceful guitar & vocals from Philippino born Chris Punsalan. The New York Press termed them a "lush, new-wave indie-pop, boy-girl group who are better than, well, half of Jade Tree's roster" while the NY Times compared them to the Canadian band Stars. Though based on a classic Amer-indie rock sound, the hooks & electronics keep it fresh & of the moment.

Kid Conga And The Pink Monkey Birds
Philosophy and Underwear
PS, US Best known for his guitar work with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Cramps, The Gun Club, Congo Norvell, and Knoxville Girls, KID CONGO POWERS has also played with the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Make-Up, Mark Eitzel, The Angels of Light, and many more. PHILOSOPHY AND UNDERWEAR, the debut of Kid's first solo band, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, is a unique fusion of elements - garagy punk, glam, dirty soul, experimental noise, dark balladry, and even abrasive mechanical electro all filtered through Kid's unique post-no wave aesthetic. Not only does the band feature New York guitar hero Jack Martin (ex-Knoxville Girls, Honeymoon Killers, YYY's, etc.), but the record features guest appearances by Little Annie (Crass, Coil, Wolfgang Press, etc.) and Captain Comatose (Khan and Snax).

La Casa Azul
El Sonido Efervescente de la Casa Azul
PS, SPAIN "The fizzy sound of LA CASA AZUL" - The first demos and the first album. It's been only six or seven years, but in this time LA CASA AZUL have achieved so many different goals and have convinced so many fans around the globe (and we're not only talking about their enormous success in Japan), that an album like this makes more sense than ever. Even more so if we remember that "El sonido efervescente de La Casa Azul", the band's debut mini-CD, has been sold out for a long time now. In fact, the first demos they distributed before releasing this debut have been cult items for a long time, too. Even before they played their first live show (as you can check by listening to the album we're now re-introducing). Hence, the re-release of the first album plus the three first demos and other extra tracks is such good news. Even more so if they're coming with a renewed, better sound (mastered by Xavier Alarcón), and a luxuriant new artwork: illustrations by Jean Duprez, one of our favourite illustrators(www.duprezdolores.com) and cover art by Cocoe ( www.cocoe.com). Let's talk about history. In 1999, sunshine-pop producer Guille Milkyway found in the five members of LA CASA AZUL the perfect vehicle for his sunny melodies, which melted the spirit of the A&M label in the 60's with 70's disco and 90's europop. But, as stated by Eugene Light on the liner notes, when LA CASA AZUL came under the spotlight "it wasn't the right moment for Bubblegum, Ye-Ye, Europop, Sunshine Pop, André Popp nor Roger Nichols. (...) They'd sing 'Me gustas' ('I like you') and it meant 'Me gustas', as if the songs had just come out from the Brill Building". In other words, maybe the scene wasn't ready to hear the influence of HARPER'S BIZARRE, THE COWSILLS or the golden years of A&M, but when they sang "Me gustas" it meant "Me gustas", and the songs connected immediately with the people. You've got the prove towards the end of the album: the crowd singing along by heart to songs that had not been released yet. It was november, 1999. Almost a year later, in october 2000, Elefant released their debut mini-album on mini-CD and 10" vinyl. Both formats are sold out. This record features, as well as the eight song included in that debut mini-album, the three first demos that started it all. We have also included their cover versions of MECANO and Jeanette, plus the song "Tantas cosas que arreglar" (featured in our 2003 compilation "Momentos perdidos") and the new version of "Chicle cosmos", recorded in 2004 to be included in the soundtrack to the movie "El Asombroso Mundo de Borjamari y Pocholo", a comedy featuring Spanish comedians Santiago Segura and Willy Toledo.

Leather Uppers
Bright Lights
PS, US The proto-primitive garage rock duo known as the Leather Uppers was founded in 1991 in Toronto, Canada by Greg Tymoshenko & Craig Daniels. Born out of the malaise & fatigue brought on by the post-metal, pre-grunge musical vacuum of the time, the Uppers opted for a bare-bones drums, guitar & vocal-based sound. Their outrageous 60's/70's-inspired matching stage costumes were clearly as much at odds w/ the "cool" styles of the time as their incredibly energetic, stripped- down brand of "panic rock"

Leels
Fingeescrossed
PS, US 'This supergroup of Florida-bred boys and girls (featuring members of HOME & MERINGUE) work long-distance to trade musical files and galvanize their collective strengths on their 3rd, most perfect, record to date. Following on the heels on the Emperor Jones released "Leels" (2002) and "Cannonballs and Silver Tongues" (2004), they continue to share various bits of their musical language from far flung reaches (NYC, St. Pete, State College, PA.) then build and grow them at Eric's Devil Isle Wetlab studio. The end result are layered, psychedelic-folk pop masterpieces that lilt and lurch in equal measure (think Uncle Wiggly, Grandaddy, Thinking Fellers Union, and 70s AM radio). The Leels flex the sonic cyber-pathways, & we can confidently say that The Little River Band never sounded so good."

Bajamar
PS, US Danish artist Jonas Munk Jensen's second purely ambient record for Darla follows footprints in the warm, wet sand made by his 2003 CD The North Shore, which was acclaimed by critics and fans. Like no other, Jonas manifests his vision of idyllic, tropical paradise as the perfect soundtrack to the dream. Bajamar is similar in sound to The North Shore yet it's a more cohesive and more solid album. Jonas' good friend Ulrich Schnauss says it's his favorite of Jonas' ambient works. If The North Shore were aural Valium, Bajamar is pure Opium. The record produces the very same ethereal buzz a lazy, endless summer afternoon at the beach with a minus tide does.

McCarty, Kathy
Another Day in the Sun
PS, US "McCarty's mingling of her clear and cogent vocals with a well-drawn melange of styles marks 'Another Day in the Sun' not only as a most welcome return, but easily one of the best albums of the young year."-SXSW. New solo album, 10 years in the making, from GLASS EYE founder, vocalist, guitarist & is a cause for rejoicing for those who love Austin or just good music not stamped out by the goddamned cookie cutter. Joined here by her GE mates Stella Weir & Brian Beattie, who also produces, it's damned near a full GE album, but as seen through the songwriting lens of McCarty. Deftly melds some odd folk threads into the more familiar, though still off center, blend of weird rock & pop, which adds some very nice, unexpected touches to her more familiarly unexpected weirdness. Make sense? "Down in the Basement the light has changed. My dark is light and the shadows are stained." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Montys Loco
Man Overboard
PS, SWEDEN Ultra-sensual art-pop/weird-folk alchemy produced by Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn And John). It's like a free-range, organic version of The Knife or Phil Spector's girlgroup harem, plus it's everything I love about The Concretes, but with a more experimental bent, so comparisons to Bjork aren't too far out. Katapult REVIEW: "The two women that are hiding behind the name Montys Loco have been playing music for over 10 years together. Accordingly to themselves Björn Yttling, who is the producer of these 10 songs, has shown them a new pathway to walk on. And the walk they walk is good. Really good. The music that gets delivered by these two ladies is small pop songs with big words. It's smart, funny and at the same time so distinct and honest with a sexy edge... On "Man Overboard" Anja Bigrells voice sound harsh and elegant at the same time. It reminds me of Anna Ternheim and Karin Dreijer mixed with Victoria Bergsman from The Concretes, at the same time. The spacious keyboard and organ sounds mixed together with the earthly touch of an acoustic guitar creates a Phil Spector vibe that is hard to not like. It's a record that at first comes off as nothing special, but just as a seed takes its time to blossom into a wild colourful lovely flower." CD comes in a spiffy velour/vinyl wallet with a full-color lyric booklet.

Rauhan Orkestri/Lauhkeat Lampaat
Sylissain oot
PS, CANADA RAUHAN ORKESTERI (Peace Orchestra)/LAUHKEAT LAMPAAT (Meek Sheep) CD originally released on LP in 2005 on Italian label, QBICO; ten pieces of free-improv-folk-jazz from Finland, with a distinctive foundation of playful vigor and heartening spirit. It's an organic improv session that breathes countryside air, sensing the grass between its toes. Not including several self-released 7"s and limited edition CD-Rs, this is the PEACE ORCHESTRA's second full length. It illustrates a great progression and a newly acquired, absolutely beautiful sense of restraint. The members of this quartet play off each other magically, leaving room for the microscopic details to shine through. Deeply routed in the incestuous Finnish pych-folk-experimental scene, the family tree of this four-piece has many branches, including the duo, LAUHKEAT LAMPAAT who are peppered throughout this release. These pieces are differentiated by higher timbres and a slightly more tongue-in-cheek air (They are also distinguished by the asterisk in the song listing) RAUHAN ORKESTERI has to be one of Europe's most exciting new free jazz outfits, filled with a rarely encountered joyful energy floating on a fantastic search into the free realms of the outer possibilities of sound. No cause for intellectual drama here, Antti Tolvi, Ville Jolanki (reeds), Jaakko Tolvi (percussion) and Tero Kemppainen (bass) need no more then the direct physical contact between body and instrument for their sonic onslaughts that in no time go from hectic outbursts to warm and mellow soft blows.

Redfearn, Alec K & the Eyesores
Smother Party
PS, US A collection of tales about real & imagined horrors. The music is decidedly more cabaret than the previous CD. Slow, simmering noir-ish dirges, spastic no-wave tangos, repetitive rhythmic conundrums, Weimar-style cabaret songs, drunken revelry, crippling depression, extreme self loathing, Catholic guilt, clanking, scraping & radio noise are some of the many facets that make up The Eyesores' sound. "This is wonderful stuff - brave and experimental, yet warmly human. Make room on your folk revival shelf for something that may be influenced by folk, but is in no way a revival." -Splendid

Russian Circles
Enter
PS, US Even though they don't play the most accessible music, an instrumental amalgam of punk, metal, indie-rock & even prog, they have the it factor. Debut album, definitely doesn't sound like a new band clumsily over-thinking their songs, but instead it sounds like one cohesive composition in six movements. Each movement holds its breath through the intense moments, but exhales through sweeping, airy horizons that slowly collapse into dense panoplies, showcasing the band's shifting dynamics & not just the binary code of loud/quiet. Coupled with their richly textured guitar-work, thick, growling bass lines & propulsive, polyrhythmic beats.

PS, UK Feat. Montreal based MIKE FEUERSTACK aka "GRANDPAPA" (KEPLER, WOODEN STARS) From its haunting & evocative opening chords to its self-assured instrumentation & lyricism. Von Balthazar, Troy
Troy Von Balthazar
PS, SPAIN 16 songs + 1 video. Engaging and leading character of an indie rock which does not like anything more than repainting our dull daily life with throbbing explosions, TROY VON BALTHAZAR, inspired singer of Chokebore, is one of the most enthralling figure of the American underground. The writing and the music, which made intrusion in his life at the age of 6 after a fall top of a staircase, will be thus the privileged passport of an artist who, on the borders of the Pacific, knew very early how to develop a unique, singular and captivating music. Temporarily forsaking the brilliantly tortured melodies and the furious performances of Chokebore for more melancholic compositions, where acoustic guitars and piano cut the lion's share, Sir VON BALTHAZAR reveals us today a pacified facet of his personality. Able to sculpt weight as if it was the most common of materials, TROY VON BALTHAZAR builds, record after record, show after show, a state where hypnosis becomes a kingdom. Some elliptic arrangements, a gripped voice, and it is a whole world delightfully odd, always in weightlessness in spite of an omnipresent tension, which appears under our amazed eyes. We are not going to paradises of naive idylls anymore, he comes to say. To tell the truth, it does not matter, since the hells where this crazy ally eagerly invites us seem to be really attractive. TROY VON BALTHAZAR, or how playing a funeral march with a flowery shirt... "Troy Von Balthazar, the most touching artist we have listened to since Elliott Smith (...) He stands out with songs that are remarkably disturbed, leaving us between the pleasure of hearing a music so pure and the relief of not being Troy Von Balthazar (...) Wonderful, but dangerous." Les Inrockuptibles. "Troy Von Balthazar is not only an exciting disciple of Cohen, he is that and much more!" Rolling Stone Francia.

Wired For Mono
A Calling from Another Station; Radio Interrupt
PS, SWEDEN Debut full-length from retro-fitted garage-rockers Wired For Mono, "The best live act in Stockholm" (Ebbot Lundberg, The Soundtrack of Our Lives), and easily some of the best classic rock action released this year. Logo Magazine REVIEW: "Straining it through a millennial filter that allows Mick Jagger to strut alongside The Charlatans, and The Saints to roll in pig shit with GG Allin"... NME live REVIEW: "Deceptively noisy Scando-drone heroes arrive in the UK... The cabal of Swedish rock n roll bands set for world domination continues with Stockholm's premier pop-art blues janglists and Soundtrack Of Our Lives protégés Wired For Mono. Right from the start it's obvious that singer/guitarists Henrik Lillsjo and Arvid Engstrom favour the rubber faced contortions of 65-model Keith Richards and the dress sense of cosmic country icon, Gram Parsons. But tonight is no excursion into fringed-jacket retro-fetishism: Wired For Mono are dirty drone rock boys in disguise and the loudest thing NME has heard in a dog's age."

Year Of
Slow Days
PS, US A soft humming. A clarinet from a distance. Disconnected sounds, searching, waiting. With "Mantra" "Slow Days" begins as expected - at least with regard to this line up. BERNARD FLEISCHMANN, CHRISTOF KURZMANN, PAUL KLING (aka Burkhard Stangl), Martin Siewert and Werner Dafeldecker are all together experimentalists of beats and sounds, trained in post-Jazz and improvisation, noisy, fragile, encoded. It sounds exactly like that what people like to call art. And in Vienna one is able to achieve this in a very special, hearty way. "Slow Days" has actually become a hearty, heartwarming record. A pop album, that certainly is a small surprise. Already the polymorph "mantra" finishes after one and a half minutes in a songwriter's intimacy. The five have already left a slight presentiment on Bernhard Fleischmann's album "Welcome tourist" (Morr 2002), "take your time" was the name of the track. "sleep" was another track on "Welcome tourist", an electronic track back then, garnished only with Christof Kurzmann's voice. For "slow days" it has become a chamber music inspirited country song, a chamber that permits a view on the sunset, with fainting guitars, a vibraphone, with warm distortions. "Don't get me wrong, it's just a song" sings Christof Kurzmann very close to your ear. Maybe it is even closer than that.

Adamson, Barry
Stranger on the Sofa (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US New album of noir-ish film jazz from legendary composer & bassist for MAGAZINE and NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS on his own label. A DIY masterpiece picking up where "King of Nothing Hill" left off. Darkly cinematic, with its tale of future past, memories lost & dying love. Doesn't shy away from sentimentality but leaves enough slack for blistering prog work outs.

Alcian Blue
Alcian Blue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US Though this CD is Alcian Blue 's debut full-length,the Washington, DC-based group, whose early limited-edition EPs drew favorable comparisons to the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain, have been been around for almost five years, recording records in their basement and developing an underground fan base both locally and globally. The sudden departure of their drummer late last year left them wondering what the future held for DC 's loudest rock band. It was right at this time that vocalist/guitarist Jake Reid and his then girlfriend (now wife) Kim started writing a batch of new songs with heavy drum machine beats and walls of synths and guitars. Blending the neo-shoegaze influences from their past releases with the haunting landscapes of early '80s icons like Joy Division/New Order,The Cure, and prime time Depeche Mode, the new sound showcased on Alcian Blue presents a fresh perspective and groundwork for exploration. Fans of the aforementioned legends,as well as modern groups like Interpol,The Editors, and Film School will love Alcian Blue. If this record isn't loud enough, head to one of their shows and see why the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine aren't due to the music but the sheer volume in which they present their dark ominous sound.

Anoice
Remmings (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, UK Let's get this straight immediately. Anoice is not another instumental group with strong rock tendencies and an armchair association with classical music. Unlike numerous contemporaries which they will undoubtedly be compared to, their goal is not to follow the trends and make the soft/loud/soft/loud juxtapositions in every song, but to carefully craft each song with a strong attention to melody, solid accompaniment, and courteous counterpoint. One of the remarkable qualities of Anoice is that they truly work as a group, with members who aren't afraid to remain quiet while others play. Through meticulous composition Anoice has achieved an unrivaled quality. While the band isn't intentionally attempting to be cinematic, the recordings achieve something breathtaking and emotive: imagine the Rachel's scoring a film by Ang Lee. Anoice's music is anthemic and rich while being introspective and personal. Each track is preceeded by brief and dense ambient tracks to clense the audio palate much like ginger in your sushi boat. Anoice are a six-piece group based in Tokyo. The band was formed in January, 2004 by members Ricco (guitar/keyboards) and Taku (guitars and mandolin), who were soon joined by Yuki (piano), Utaka (viola), Matsu (bass), and Yossy (drums). While each member cites different musical influences, it's fairly evenly split between rock (think My Bloody Valentine meets King Crimson), classical and modern composers (Perhaps Debussy and Shostakovitch writing together after drinking heavily from Phillip Glass), jazz and electronic ( Autechre meets Mum maybe?). Combining all of these influences with their obvious Japanese heritage Anoice has created an album with an emotional arc, climaxing magnificently as it ends and leaves the listener determined to press play once again. Pronounced "a noyce," the name comes from the Celtic word for "now" (Anois). Remmings is their debut release and contains four named songs and five unnamed songs. Cover art by Non Format. Mastering by Jeff Lipton (Flaming Lips, Magnetic Fields) "Anoice have produced something entirely different and original, a mature record of great beauty and attention to detail that rises above any clichés and should by all accounts establish them as one of the leading artists today." Battiato, Franco
Pollution (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Franco Battiato's wonderfully lively 1973 concept album Pollution is an audaciously psychedelic album drawn from the space rock dimension with good portions of electronics and keyboard layers. Drawing heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer, Battiato and company (besides himself, three backing band members play synth as well) give Pollution an extreme electronic edge. With comparisons to Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, and Pink Floyd, Pollution was declared "genius" by Frank Zappa. Extremely influential on the '90s Chicago post-rock mafia. Original artwork. Bear Quartet, The
Eternity Now (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN New album from one of the world's best pop bands. "Eternity now" will be released on the 24th of May in Sweden, likely a day earlier here at Parasol. It has only been eight months since their last release "Saturday Night" and like that album, this is an album that has an electronic touch with really nice harmonies and a twist of Black Sabbath. The first single will be "The Repairing of the Red Sea". The band says: "It was recorded at Dubios at Odenplan, Stockholm, Sweden with Chrille Roth, just as "Saturday Night". Eleven songs, of which two are skits, you know like it (used to be) on hip hop records. It's heavily electronic and sometimes heavy metal. Not purely though. It's not "genre music" in that way, but it distinguishes itself from the latest album, which sort of fell between two chairs; we tried to fit songs into a form that we didn't really master at the time. This time we only rehearsed for 45 minutes and more or less wrote the songs in the studio. It feels way better. The album's a bit monotonous (in a good, minimalistic way) and it's much more melodic than we thought it would be. About half of it, if you count the minutes, is intrumental and we have a spectacular guest on one of the songs. Can't say who it is yet though."

Bitcrush
In Distance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 15TH)
PS, US "In Distance," Bitcrush's latest offering and first on n5MD, finds Ex-Gridlock beat-smith Mike Cadoo pushing n5MD further into a world where two disparate yet emotional elements, human and electronic, are merged into one. Recorded over a one year span, In Distance is "very personal," by the artist's admission. Cadoo has laid himself bare in an introspective ride where shimmering shoe-gaze-centric guitars, broken electronics, dual bass work, live drums, and Mike's now trademark "the one left behind" vocal style meld together into long aural road-trips ending at dusk in the middle of nowhere. A trip you will be more than happy to take considering who is driving. Vast and heartfelt; engaging yet adrift, In Distance has as much in common with his debut "Enarc" (Component) and the "Shimmer & Fade" EP (Enpeg) as it does with the more recent output of Mogwai, Album Leaf or even Fourtet. In Distance leads us there, now how do we get home...for fans of: mogwai, fourtet, ulrich schauss, dryft.

Brötzmann, Peter
Group Alarm (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 6TH)
PS, US "The story is simple. We were touring with this band, and the reason I could put the band together in the first place was a radio gig in Hamburg. Michael Naura, chief of the jazz dept there, was setting up a series of on-air concerts in a 200-seat studio, so we performed the first piece, which I called 'Alarm.' I used the graphic instructions for a reaction to a nuclear emergency, a series of waves and straight tones, repeated in a certain way. We had planned two more pieces, one by Willem Breuker and one by Frank Wright. My piece took about 40 minutes, the first half of the concert. At the end of the performance, Naura came to me -while we were still on the air - and whispered that the house got a bomb threat and had to be evacuated. So I had to bring the piece quickly to and end and the audience was asked to leave the hall. We also had to pack and leave. Police and special forces showed up with all kinds of equipment, gear, dogs - we know all that better now than then. That was the end of the concert and that's the 40 minutes we have on tape. -Peter Brötzmann, Chicago, Oct 2005

Pica Pica (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 25TH)
PS, US A sweet period piece from the FMP ARCHIVE (FMP1050), on Atavistic's Unheard Music Series- featuring Brötz, ALBERT MANGELSDORFF & GUNTER "BABY" SOMMER. "I remember at one period when Han Bennink couldn't make the gigs - he was playing with Misha most of the time - Albert and I had a trio with Fred Van Hove, and we used to play in a little bar in Cologne which was run by the son of Päffgen brewery, a famous little brewery where Kölsch is brewed. It was equipped with an upright piano and a 20-liter barrel of fresh beer, which was empty after the gig. Albert's generosity and open-mindedness, compared to many other jazz musicians in the period, was remarkable. When he started working with crazy Brötzmann and Bennink, some of his colleagues gave him a very hard time. But I think he profited from our work the same way we did from his experience and musicality."-Peter Brötzmann, Chicago, 10/05.

Cash, Johnny
Open Road (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US The recordings that Johnny Cash made at the beginning of his long and fortunate career all took place in SUN studios, under the watchful eye of producer Sam Phillips, well known for also having discovered Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Phillips was struck by "Hey Porter," a song Cash had written just after he returned from the military. When asked to write a ballad for the B side, Cash wrote "Cry, Cry, Cry," that very same night. The single sold 100,000 copies in the USA alone. His second single, "Folsom Prison Blues," was just as successful. In '56 "I Walk The Line" remained on the charts for 44 weeks and sold a million copies. From this point forward there was no place to go but up for the young Johnny Cash. The precious recordings collected in this Universe CD bring together those very recordings that made him famous, along with some outtakes and rarities. Cepia
Atlantic Blood (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, CANADA Featuring tracks by Mr.. Projectile, Tiki Obmar, Miles Tilmann, Tim Koch and the man behind the curtain Huntely Miller aka Cepia. Having met wide acclaim for the majestic machine clatters and subterraneous melodies of the Dowry EP (Ghostly International), Minneapolis's Cepia now graces Sublight with "ATLANTIC BLOOD", a CD collection of remixes and new material that runs a remarkable stylistic gamut. Cepia brings a one-two punch with a propulsive mix of Mr. Projectile's "You Need" and an icy reworking of Tiki Obmar. Elsewhere, the ocean beats of "X to M" by Tim Koch are complemented beautifully by the skeleton-hop of "Naoise" by Dosh, while the lush digital grain of original pieces "574" and "Arount" exhibit the versatility of Cepia's Midas touch. Also including reinterpretations of Fog and Miles Tilmann, Atlantic Blood is a compelling addition to the oeuvre of one of the most original voices in modern electronic composition, and a tantalizing precursor to his debut.

Charade, The
A Real Life Drama (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US CD digipak. The Charade follow on the heels of their critically acclaimed debut with their second release of sunny Swedish pop, "A Real Life Drama," just in time for summer. Magnus Karlsson contributes the jangly guitar that he perfected in the groundbreaking indie pop group Happydeadmen. Mikael Matsson, from Red Sleeping Beauty and The Shermans, adds more complexity to this album, from layers of keyboards and organs to background "strings." The "gorgeous and airy" vocals of singer and spouse Ingela Matsson defines a beauty and space in each song. The Charade easily blend their influences from one song to the other, paying homage to 60s girl groups, Motown and the warm feelings of early 70s hits from The Carpenters to Burt Bacharach without missing a beat. The colors of the Swedish flag will be emblazoned on the digipak CD. In honor of the Swedish National Soccer team's entry into the World Cup this summer in Germany, The Charade has written, "Dressed in Yellow and Blue" for the team. "A Real Life Drama" continues with the sweet, sunny popmusic that we know and love from their debut. I especially like the jangly guitars and the male/female vocal harmonies from singers Magnus Karlsson and Ingela Matsson - beautiful! Eardrums

No Depression praises their ability to "appeal to those who aren't typical fans of bluegrass" & Pitchfork concurs, saying, "For a new band writing starkly traditional bluegrass, this is shockingly strong material... the highlights here are as good as it gets." Their new album produced by Brian Paulson (Beck, Cities, Uncle Tupelo) continues the band's quest to unite their love for the power of rock with their faith in their home state's fine tradition of pure music.

Chatham, Rhys
Angel Moves Too Fast To See (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 6TH)
PS, US e late 80s, he was chafing against the logistical & financial constraints imposed in the States when he moved permanently to Paris. He began composing his masterpiece, for 100 electric guitars, electric bass & drums. One of the most extraordinary works in the minimalist canon, one that demonstrates the majesty inherent in his amplified imagination. This cements his reputation as a monolithic figure astride both rock & classical musics.

Requiems Der Nature 2002-2004 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US Kip Ulhorn (PANTHERS) & Simon Wojan, German multi-instumentalist combine to create rattlling, sprawling experiments that fuse their musical discoveries. Within, strictures of German new age & electronic music of the '70s haze into field recordings mottled with analog burble & echoes of woodwinds. Contributions by Jacob Morris (DOUBLE), Jerry Fuchs (TURNING MACHINE/JUAN MACLEAN), & Ulhorn's wife, Kelly Winkler, fortified the sessions with further points of view. Then the tapes were traded & processed even further by the musicians, until the resulting product became complete. For fans of Animal Collective, Boards of Canada, This Heat, Gong, etc.

Clouds Forming Crowns
Race to the Blackout (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US Collective brainchild of Todd & Tim Tobias, two indie rock apostles whose extensive contributions to the legacy of Guided By Voices still shine years afterward. They quickly plunge stylistically into vastly new territories, including Who "Sings My Generation"-style rockers, lyrical creep-outs & mind- trips a la Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie & stoney trips reminiscent of GBV's deepest 60's influences. There is more here than expected. Aided in part by unsettlingly thick fuzzed-out bass riffs, CFC rips out several tracks that are balls-out desert-rock monsters, akin to Blue Oyster Cult melted into the abrasive sonics of "Bleach"-era Nirvana.

Mutiny Pop (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US Every few years a band comes along in the underground with enough force to break through the surface. These bands tend to burn hot; they burn bright. "Mutiny Pop" is that bright burning light, from a band that is creating enough friction in the underground pop scene to torch the entire set of clichéd expectations of poppunk. They continue their assault on the genre; recreating, mutating & reengineering the sound into something more aggressive, fun & exciting than anything heard before.

Corsano, Chris & B. Chasny/Paul Metzger
Split (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US C. Corsano (sparring partner of Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, Nels Cline, et al) and Ben Chasny (aka SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE) had previously paired up for the School Of The Flower LP on Drag City. As wide a stylistic swath as that record cut, it was far from an exhaustive map of their topography. Here, Corsano's drums and Chasny's guitar chatter & clatter with jittery hyper-articulation, worrying the meat off the bone in short sharp strokes. A "Worm Confesses" over the course of one side of this split record & is given an impassioned absolution. For over 2 decades, Paul Metzger (TVBC)was one of the Twin Cities' overly well-kept secrets. His recent emergence as a solo artist, via a pair of glowingly-received releases on the Chairkickers & Mutant Music labels, has started to raise his profile to a level commensurate with his devil's-crossroads-deal talent. On a guitar modified with music box innards & an accompanying tanpura, Metzger dives deep into the raga heart of a moonlit day & returns with the jewels of "August." Released in an edition of 766 copies, with silkscreened poplar wood covers.

Empire Strikes Back (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US Eighth LP from UK chroniclers of the culturally perverse. The band's humor remains as strangely contradictory as ever, with Wallers juggling a cast of persona as far-flung as P.G. Wodehouse, Ice Cube, Winston Churchill, & Bill Hicks. Is "The Empire Strikes Back" a concept album about race, England, and Star Wars, or did the band just find something unwholesomely amusing about the juxtaposition of fascism and Industrial Light and Magic?

Court & Spark
Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US With Hearts, The Court & Spark have created their meisterwerk, a rarified record that seamlessly stitches together their shimmering river hymns, fuzzy sci-fi sky songs, acoustic drone in the key of OM, dusky West Coast C&W (that's country and western), spectral discreet music, and serpentine motel blues into an album as rich, nuanced, and irreverent as it is ambitious. Snow on Moss Stone (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US Witty, intimate & deeply charming Finnish singer/songwriter Mauri Heikkinen. Follow-up release to 2005's "Growing Green" is more focused & coherent, whose span is no less diverse or ambitious in its scope. Weathered-beyond-its-years vocals (shifting from a soft, in your ear burr to a low rasp) & acoustic/electriv guitar, piano, organ, accordian & subtle fx-use weave in & out. Anchored in observations of his own reality & rural/geographical isolation, his writing opens out a very human music. Tomlab-069

Final Fantasy
He Poos Clouds (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US On his second album, Owen Pallet presents a clearly enhanced concept of his solo project Final Fantasy. The core sound of his 2005 debut, "Final Fantasy Has A Good Home," was mainly based on Pallet's violin and his expert handling of the loop pedal. He now proves his skills as an arranger, working with an abundantly staffed chamber music ensemble, featuring a string quartet, piano, harpsichord and percussion. Still, Owen's ingenuity for catchy melody lines and surprising idioms is captivating.!Regardless of the more extended scope for this album, it was produced to maintain a certain intimacy. The overall atmosphere carries the ease of an afternoon dress rehearsal, as if the ensemble members played for themselves one last time before the crowd rushs in. Owen"s mostly introverted vocals also express this mood of privacy. The musical language is eclectic without letting its influences act as bare quotations for themselves. Traces were smeared with care and everything is consolidated and processed in such a distinct way that one cannot clearly designate the culprits any longer. He even integrates an amazing variety of stylistic spheres within the individual songs. String arrangers for ARCADE FIRE. Fans of Andrew Bird tingle w/delight. Full US tour coming in Fall.

Fleeting Joys, The
Despondent Transponder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Flavors of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, The Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth are there, but don't fully explain this shimmering anomaly. Their debut album Despondent Transponder was written, performed, recorded and mixed by the band. Brilliant Californian drummer Matt McCord lends his skills to the project. After hearing Despondent Transponder, legendary Swervedriver drummer, Jez, has pegged the duo for collaboration on their next release. While appreciating the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, it has never been the goal of Fleeting Joys to imitate what they admire. "It is merely a starting point to expand from, experiment with, and go from there. We simply love the experience of being drenched in crashing waves of beautifully distorted chords!" It's from this love that the song-crafting of despondent transponder answers the pop vs. noise riddle with catchy, at times - even happy - melodies and crashing instrumentals that rip through like a cyclone tearing up a trailerpark. "Of recent things to cross this desk, Fleeting Joys is a real delight. The epiphanic Spectorian fog works best on "The Breakup," which plays Rorika's gossamer vocals and symphonic synth lines against John's My Bloody Valentine-style guitar sturm und drang over a stellar melody. - Jackson Griffith, Sacramento News & Review

Georgina, Cristina
Mapamundi (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, SPAIN Almudena López disguises as Cristina Georgina, in the shape of a romantic heroine. Key singer of Las Escarlatinas and Mate, Almudena is besides a prominent flute player, a reputed architect and a talented designer/ illustrator. She is undoubtedly someone with something genuine and personal to say. More importantly this timid Audrey Hepburn-delicate chanteuse is willing to redefine herself as one of the most beautiful singing voices in indiepop. Let's hope she can remain under the radar for a long time. "Mapa mundi" is her first solo album but it has all the necessary components for eternal alchemy and a sonic palette of pop numbers that make you think of Isobel Campbell/Gentle Waves, La Buena Vida, Beatles, Coralie Clement, Nico, Mate, Escarlatinas, Go- Betweens, Ephemera or Kiki D'aki. In few words, pure pop music under the usual blue-blooded production of Ramón Leal and Mateo Guiscafré. Cristina's voice is marvelous, her harmonies warm, and her approach devoid of crass commercialism. You will find no studio tricks here, just the best levels of pop polish, dizzying heights of charm and a reliance on good songwriting and tunes. In this eccentric and evocative guitar pop, you will discover something pure, peaceful and delicately quaint too. Like an old kitchen table draped with a red and white tablecloth sitting in a room with bright turquoise walls. There is also guitar jangling (dreamy guitar textures and playful romps) influenced from many different leanings: The Smiths, The Would-be-goods, Love, Trash Can Sinatras, Field Mice and La Buena Vida/ Le Mans into a unique and refreshing approach that stands at odds with most contemporary music. Mapa mundi is definitely a place where to go and seek shelter. And certainly as good and comforting as other historic pop records: La Buena Vida #1, Deseo Carnal, Cecilia 2, Popemas, Entresemana, Sol de Medianoche, Heliotropo, Soidemersol... Spanish pop at its best!

Guryan, Margo
Take a Picture (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
PS, US Originally released on Bell Records. Includes liner notes by David Rosner. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Sometimes when an cultily-adored obscurity is reissued, it becomes clear that a lot (if not all) of its mystique was due to its rarity. However, this time the buzz is justified: a '60s soft pop masterpiece. The sound is a delightful collision, with surprisingly funky electric piano and Steve Cropper-style guitar leads dueling over prominent, clunky drums and unobtrusive orchestrations. Over it all, Guryan's breathy overdubbed vocals--her wispy, wobbily-pitched babytalk style was clearly heavily influenced by bossa nova pioneer Astrud Gilberto, who covered this album's dreamy "Think of Rain"--give the album its most attractive feature. Guryan is as accomplished a songwriter as she is a singer; her main influences seem to be Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bacharach/David, and that combination of bossa nova and sleek pop sophistication is the watchword. Sweetly poppy, lightly jazzy, and completely irresistible, this is sunshine pop at its finest. 180gm.

Don't miss this happy moment in the epic career of this great American blues man, who reveals here one of the most beautiful sides of contemporary blues.

Hamster Theatre
Public Execution of Mister Personality/Quasi Day Room (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Co-led by multi-instrumentalists Dave Willey & Jon Stubbs, with reed player Mark Harris, guitarist Mike Johnson, drummer Raoul Rossiter, bassist Brian McDougall & a number of other guests. Includes their new studio album as well as a second disc of a live performance from 2002. HT straddle the edges of folk music; avant-garde; "world" music; early 20th century French composers, such as Satie & Ravel; contemporary composition and many other musical forms, bringing together elements of all of these styles, while never sounding "just like" any one of them. Their songs are always filled with delightful melodies and surprising orchestrations. "A highly skilled chamber ensemble...offering a literate synthesis of rock, jazz and European folk forms. You can't really put this music into a tidy little compartment, but it's unforced, sophisticated and highly entertaining."-AP

Handsome Family
Last Days of Wonder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US A collection of country folk love songs sung in airports, garbage dumps, drive-thru windows & shark-infested waters. The album celebrates the little miraculous moments of beauty found in everyday life: a golf course shining in the rain, hanging lights bouncing in the breeze, pigeons singing from billboards, trees blooming in squares of dirt. The songs linger on those moments when we"re pulled from the ordinary to feel awed by mystery, bewildered by beauty, terrified by the vast unknowable around us (whether we wander through shady groves or crowded parking lots). Brett Sparks, who writes the music, draws from medieval melody, country-politan string arrangements, tin-pan alley crooners, & dusty hillbilly records to weave together the fabric of this record. Rennie Sparks, who writes the lyrics, makes magical realism from polar adventure stories, turn-of-the-century electricity wars, pagan hunting songs & her own time spent (like most people) riding up elevators, staring out hotel room windows, & driving interstate highways. The inspiration for the words in these songs comes from Rennie"s belief that not only does our present world feel like the last days of wonder, but that human life has always felt just this way: full of a sense of impending doom & inevitable self-destruction, but simultaneously steeped in the sacred, the infinite, the impenetrable, the ever-wondrous. Brett"s musical
compositions & recording process were hybrids of the old & the new; the real & the fake; the analog & the digital. The album is full of such ancient & modern anomalies: analog compressors, vintage instruments & condenser mics, all drawn into the digital world of computer recording. Pedal steel parts were e-mailed from Chicago (Stephen Dorocke-FREAKWATER & JESSE SYKES) & musical saw part sent from London (DAVID COULTER-TEST DEPT, POGUES, TOM WAITS). "Last Days" travels from swamps & caves to laboratories & bowling alleys, always celebrating the mystery & madness in love. The songs explain who's hanging shoes on telephone wires, why automatic sinks in airports sometimes don't see your hands, & why The Handsome Family refuses to go to Heaven unless flies can come too. Also, a tender tale of Tesla's last days: his love for wounded pigeons & his ability to explode light bulbs with his mind. Rennie is eaten by a wild boar. Brett threatens to pull the stars down from the sky. A record of love songs in the true Romantic sense.

Hefner
Catfight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 3RD)
PS, US Hefner released records from 1996 through to 2002 and didn't worry the charts too greatly, 46 being their highest placing. They did however find a special place in the hearts of their devoted following who keep vigils for their reformation to this day. Their's is a special kind of 'small' music that rocks but doesn't beat its chest with any bluster, it beckons you with a little finger. Much of their notoriety comes from the patronage of John Peel who had them record 7 sessions for his radio show. Hefner were sometimes wrongly categorized as indie boys in need of a shag but its much truer to say that they had lots of sex, just with the wrong people. Hefner were really a folk band for the mid twenty city dwellers and their songwriter, Darren Hayman always had an ear for the details. Darren was also extremely prolific, although he would disagree; 'I'm not prolific, everybody else is lazy.' These 43 unreleased songs are drawn from a career that saw five albums in six years and 22 singles and eps. Much of the first disk includes songs that were destined to form the basis of Hefner's mellower 6th album and really shouldn't be considered outtakes. They show the band returning to their guitar roots after the electronic experimentation of their last album 'Dead Media'. The two CD then works backward with unreleased songs from all of their records, gradually revealing the scratchy lo-fi punk rock band that existed before their first album that has remained unheard until now. This record shows the spikey underbelly of Hefner, a record for fans that can also hold its own as an introduction to a peculiarly individual band that have their own dirty back alley in rock history.

Holland, Jolie
Springtime Can Kill You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 15TH)
PS, US Springtime's 12 track song-cycle is a crossroads where haunting meets joyful - a voice from the heavens singing stories of the underworld. Holland's songs rise and fall like heavy eyelids and convey the peace of that place between asleep and awake, creating a special place for you to be. There sounds from past and present-tense waltz together to a never-ending melody that flickers between folk, jazz, blues and pop. Holland's lyrics conjure characters and situations one might find in the surrealistic celluloid of Jim Jarmusch. As with all good dreams, there is an anything-goes spirit leading the way.

Ilar, Anders
Ludwijka (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, UK Ludwijka is the first release on Merck from the renowned Swede Anders Ilar. Some Merck fans may be more familiar with his material recorded for the sister Narita imprint. This release is in the same vein as that material, it hovers around wickedly dark and complex electronics, with complicated beats and programming, but strays from the typical 4/4 dance floor style. The name of the release itself comes from the old spelling of his hometown, Ludvika, which was in use some hundred years ago. This applies to the release because for the source of the tracks, Anders has gone back to his origins, sampling himself from old tapes, including some of the first tracks he ever composed on the piano when he was six years old. He transforms the noises made by animals, nature, humans, instruments and machines into a unique listening experience that takes you back into the Swedish countryside to experience Ludwijka firsthand.

Jazkamer
Metal Music Machine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Jazzkammer, or Jazkamer as they call themselves now, are the Norwegian king of noise, LASSE MARHAUG & JOHN HEGRE (of KAPTEIN KALIBER among others). During their 8 year existence they has explored different kinds of sound expressions & cooperated with different musicians, but the core has always been Marhaug and Hegre. In typical Jazzkammer manner their new album is a metal album! And they insisted on calling themselves Jazkamer, & to be on their own label called Smalltown Supernoise. They have made the album that Lou Reed did not make, taking Reed at his word & made metal machine music in the right meaning of the words. Jazkamer is part of the tradition of bands like Animal Collective, Wolf Eyes, Boredoms, Black Dice, Sunno))), Earth, and Lightning Bolt. Bands that mix the avantgarde with noise, kraut, metal & punk, creating new music with an unpretentious DIY aesthetic. Joined on this album by Jørgen "SIR DUPERMANN" Træen of TOY, Ivar Bjørnson of Norwegian black metal legends ENSLAVED & Iver Sandøy and Olav Kristiseter both of metalband MANNGARD. Kiefer, Christian
Czar Nicholas Is Dead (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 20TH)
PS, US "A beautiful musical evocation of a page of Americana. Environmental recordings and electronics wrap up a slow-changing bed of loops consisting of simple folk guitar lines, banjo, accordion, and voices (both singing and reciting)."-AMG on "Exodust" (Extreme, 2002). A soundtrack to a tundra wasteland filled with lonely soldiers, ornate towers crumbling into ruin, and desolate, blood-soaked snowscapes written from the confines of Kiefer's Northern California home. An essentially ambient project with minimal instrumentation, "Czar Nicholas Is Dead" captures Russia as a fever dream, a strange and disorienting place that lay on no map, but rather resides entirely in the author's imagination. On the one hand, the subject of Kiefer's project is a strange one to be sure, particularly since most of his recorded output-including the similarly epic and minimalist instrumental project "Exodust" (2002) -has been rooted strongly in American soil. But Kiefer's work has always also been rooted in history and in academic and intellectual pursuits. For research, Kiefer turned to thick volumes on the assassination of the Romanoff family, the tradition of Russian folk music, and to early Russian silent film. Kiefer brought in a handful of his favorite musicians and asked them to improvise with him live in the studio with a handful of simple instructions. The material was then worked over further in the studio, edited, rearranged, and produced, often with additional parts being added or subtracted as the musical force of the album began to reveal itself. The end result is part collective improvisation on a conceptual and musical theme, and part constructed and composed musical work. "I have one thing to say about Christian Kiefer: It's GREAT to hear new music!"-Thurston Moore

Having since escaped Philadelphia for retreat in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey; Wind and Water is a meticulously focused reflection of these new surroundings while keeping echoes of their past haunts close at hand. The sounds on Wind and Water are both moving and breathing, and crumbling and decomposing, often within a single track. It is at times ominous and foreboding and other times hopeful and calming. It is within these elements that Loess finds a sense of balance. The album suggests a new respect for the two elements that embody these balances; the Wind and Water. for fans of : casino versus japan, boards of Canada.

Loud Family with Anton Barbeau
What If It Works? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 11TH)
PS, US Recording five acclaimed albums for Alias Records during the 1990s, the Loud Family, featuring Scott Miller and an ever-changing cast of musicians, made some of the best pop music of the decade. Aimee Mann (who told Pulse magazine's Brett Milano that Scott Miller is "the best songwriter out there right now") and Magnetic Fields'
Stephin Merritt (who raved about the Loud Family's "gloriously catchy hooks" in Time Out New York) hand-picked the Loud Family to open for them on tour. Members of the band's rabid Internet fan base traveled from all over the United States to catch their shows, flying, in some cases, several thousand miles to see them. Initially, Scott called it quits after the LF's final Alias release, 2000's "Attractive Nuisance." But he has finally been coaxed out of retirement to record "What If It Works?," which features the newest member of the Loud Family, Sacramento power pop hero Anton Barbeau is best known for his collaboration with England's Bevis Frond, "King of Missouri"). "What If It Works?" features several originals as well as dynamic covers of the Rolling Stones' "Rocks Off," the Zombies' "Remember You" and Cat Stevens' "I Think I See The Light."

Manyfingers
Our Worn Shadow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 6TH)
PS, SPAIN 8 tracks. Manyfingers (aka multi-instrumentalist Chris Cole) emerged out of the shady and mysterious Bristol scene that spawned the likes of Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone, Third Eye Foundation and Amp. Previously best known as Third Eye Foundation luminary Matt Elliott's right hand man, cellist and drinking buddy, Cole has also been a sometime member of legendary pastoralists Movietone as well as being the current drummer of the excellent post rock band Soeza. Cole's relative obscurity is set to change with the release of his full lenght debut album 'Our Worn Shadow' - a magnificently ambitious multi layered gem of a record. He plays piano, drums, cello, Spanish guitar, accordion, vibraphone and other assorted instruments to create a veritable whirlwind of sound. The record takes its cue from the Fourtet of 'Pause' and 'Rounds' (taking in along the way influence from US based hip hop futurists Dosh and Machine Drum) but adds Yann Tiersen style accordion and string arrangements played with the intensity of Godspeed You Black Emperor! at their ground shaking best. The cyclical motifs of Philip Glass and Steve Reich are notable ensuring that the album presses all the right neo classical buttons - often comparable to the best work of Max Richter, Rachel's, Sylvain Chauveaux and Terry Reilly. Its an album of opposites - the mournful accordions and weeping cello's recall the melancholy of Matt Elliott's recent 'Drinking Songs' yet when a female vocal is introduced on the excellent standout 'For Measured Shores', the effect is somewhat like a gallic late period Blonde Redhead. The record is impressive for the variety of melody and sounds produced, the consistently imaginative string and horn arrangements, subtle sampling and frenzied, frenetic drumming. Following the hullabaloo over recent records by the likes of Fourtet, Caribou and Diplo, Manyfingers is far and away the best Englishman to take on the baton and run with it into genuinely new and exciting places. 'Our Worn Shadow' is more than a new dawn for post rock, folktronica, electronica, neo classical or whatever you want to call it - its a life changing record that ultimately defies categorization.

We Jam Econo-Story Of... (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
PS, US Film by Jason Kulbek & Rob Walters. The Saddle Creek Records story told through interviews, home movies, rare live performances and never-beforeseen
archival footage with BRIGHT EYES, FAINT, CURSIVE and many others. In 1993, a group of childhood friends in Omaha, Nebraska released 100 copies of a cassette tape by a 13 year-old singer-songwriter / little brother, Conor Oberst. Two years later, the name Saddle Creek Records was etched in vinyl and what began as a collective local music scene would soon gain attention as a center of independent music in America. The story of the record label as told by the people who made it happen. Mission Of Burma
Obliterati, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Their third full-length studio album proper might be the most aggressive, raw, and challenging in the band's storied career. It's as relentless and engulfing an album as "Vs." some 24 years ago. Black humor, topical humor, general dense agro with hooks split into the sound like kindling. This is the next uneasy listening album of the year. "Sonic Youth sound like their cover band in comparison" - Launch.

Modern Machines
Take It, Somebody (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US Often described as classic upper Midwestern punk filtered thru a modern day basement punk sensibility. Husker Du meets early Replacements meets early Lemonheads meets Dillinger 4 meets The Figgs. While these comparisons are fairly apt, "Take It, Somebody" sees the band incorporating older & more diverse influences into their distinctive songwriting style, including 60's garage rock & even some Americana-esque twang.

Molina, Juana
Son (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Argentinean singer Molina was introduced to the American public with the release of her second album, "Segundo". A mixture of acoustic guitars, traditional percussion touches, electronic textures, and her disarming vocals make it one of the most evocative and original albums in recent memory. NPR's "All Things Considered" praised her, as did Entertainment Weekly when it named "Segundo" "Best World Music Album of 2003". "Sounds like Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier covering Nick Drake, whispering luminous folk tunes amid electronic thickets while acoustic guitars and pianos flicker like votive candles" ¿ Entertainment Weekly. 2004's follow-up, "Tres Cosas" was equally revered, as Jon Pareles of the NY Times named it a top ten record of the year, and it won even more fans as diverse as Savath & Savalas, David Byrne, Belle And Sebastian, and Sam Prekop. This is her first new material in over two years and is the first of her albums to be released simultaneously around the world, which should heighten the album's impact.

Moses, Edwin
The African Gospel Years of Jamal Nafsum (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US After the success of two records that received unparalleled critical acclaim in the UK and gold sales in Japan, Edwin Moses are back with The Gospel African Years (siesta 218). Again we have received numerous letters of support from all over the world and accurate narratives of Edwin's vicissitudes in Africa. Some secrets are revealed in this third record, my dear colleagues. Although it is impossible to rewrite the past, the new Edwin Moses is a metaphor of the real Edwin Moses. This archaelogical labor will impress soul connoisseurs and experts, especially those that have recently welcome the rebirth of forgotten idols as Mike James Kirkland or Terry Callier. As we repeat incessantly as a cuckoo does its call, the story behind Edwin is a proof of the ultimate defeat of reason. The Gospel African Years (siesta 218) was recorded by reputed Spanish musicians under the command of geniuses Pedro Vigil and Pablo Errea. This masterpiece was recorded in Gijón and Cádiz by local myth Paco Loco. An amazing children's choir and a fabulous gospel choir will help you to connect to the music of your new spiritual guide. In addition more than 30 musicians have actively contributed. Among them, Gary Louris (via an adaptation of Mahalia Jackson) and Nora Gala who recreates the role of Jasmine Nafsum. These new thirteen songs expose a new fecund stage of Edwin Moses. Do not miss the myriad of arrangements that inject spiritual flair, blues tones and extraordinary rythms (related to traditional African music mixed with gospel) to the record. Gospel and blues blended together in the origin of rock and soul and Edwin could capture this alchemy. Use your sunglasses and a well-rehearsed smile to enjoy the African tour and conversion to Islam of Edwin Moses, now Jamal Nafsum. Ghana, Congo, Angola, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia....

My Education
Moody Dipper (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Formed in 1999 by members of Stars of the Lid, ultrasound, Cinders, and ST37, the seven-piece My Education is an instrumental hybrid: part space-rock cacophony, part punk rock sonic wipeout, and part ambient bad trip. My Education's 2002 debut, Five Popes, spawned regional tours, college airplay and much critical acclaim. Though comparisons to Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Mono were natural to follow, My Education's sound and instrumentation truly are its own. 2005's follow-up, Italian, fueled more national accolades and caught the ear of many musicians along the way. 2006 finds My Education's sound expanding and evolving, with a new EP, Moody Dipper, and an August tour to follow. The EP contains three new My Education tracks plus help from Kinski, Dalek, Red Sparowes, and Teith in the form of remixed Italian songs. Not being one to rest on its laurels or past achievements, My Education should be recording its next full-length release this fall. Track Listing: 01. Spirit of Peace (a variation on a theme by Popul Vuh) 02. Armistice Day 03. Dalek: Green Arrow - Deadverse Remix 04. Red Sparowes: Snake in the Grass - Greg Burns of Red Sparowes Remix 05. The band 22-Pistepirkko has been around for almost 25 years and has
recently released their 10th album "Drops & Kicks" (2005). Years ago they've started to also play shows under the name THE OTHERS (aka 22PP), dedicated to mainly cover songs they like. It's true, while they're a supergroup of sorts and are in their tenth year of existence they've still only released 3 proper albums not including the Sonic Boom remixes. When Pestrepeller does make a sound, they make it count sharing stages with Borbetomagus, David Shea and Alan Turner among others. Pestrepeller consists of long-celebrated illustrator and Wire journalist Savage Pencil, Evan Parker student and ex-Medicine Head member Peter Hope-Evans, comic artist Ed Pinset, cartoonist Harley Richardson and Rob Brown. "A quick trip to a psychedelic plane where Sun Ra's rocksichord pumps up the volume alongside krautrock kozmik couriers Ash Ra Temple, while the long shadow of Dada godfather Marcel Duchamp blots out the sun. Scarlet's Well
Black Tulip Wings (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US "A rich, lush and densely layered confection of instantly charming and infectious songs. Become intoxicated." Drowned In Sound. "Escapist pop music of the highest calibre; a tapestry of delights... " NME. Recently tagged by The Independent On Sunday as 'minor indie royalty', the enigmatic artiste and accomplished fop-pop pioneer known only as Bid comes full circle with an astounding new Scarlet's Well album. "Black Tulip Wings" is the fifth SW release, but represents something of a rebirth, if not an outright debut of sorts. It's the first to be recorded with a full eight-piece London-based live band, drawn from varying younger generations, diverse backgrounds and musical sensibilities. Additionally, it's the first to feature a substantial songwriting content from others. The result is the most consistent, rounded-out, best-dressed and fully-realised SW album to date; part indie supergroup, part stylish soundtrack to a fantasy world steeped in literary tradition. The first four SW albums were dominated by Bid's own witty and arcane compositions, but now with "Black Tulip Wings", there is a more substantial injection of songwriting blood. Of the eleven tracks, five are written or co-written by Martin White (famed for his accordionist appearances on the London comedy & cabaret scene), and one by guitarist Peter Momtchiloff (of the bands Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, The Would-Be-Goods). There's also lyrics based on poems by Tennyson and Poe, plus an original lyric by writer and self-styled London flaneur, Dickon Edwards (Orlando, Fosca). "Black Tulip Wings" also marks Bid's first album conceived with a full working band since the final Monochrome Set long-player in 1995. The eight-piece London-based band version of Scarlet's Well was born when Bid decided to return to the international concert circuit in 2004, and a local group was required to perform the SW back catalogue (with the occasional Monochrome Set classic thrown in). Of the many ingénue female singers featured on past SW albums, live band member Alice Healey is the only constant. Her distinctive and pure tones are now as synonymous with the Scarlet's Well sound as Bid's own sly croon.

Distant & abstract in the tradition of innovators like Can, Dr. Octagon & Dan The Automator, SMK departs from even the most experimental of modern artists with its hypnotic minimalism & organic restraint. Includes remixes by AUTECHRE & SPECTRE.

Sincere Trade
If You Cannot Beat Them (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US Another young musician from the underbelly of Toronto's vast music culture, Sincere Trade (Carl Heindl) presents his debut album, "If You Cannot Beat Them". Sincere Trade has quickly become a recognizable artist in the Toronto music scene and is now set to deliver his musical vision to the world. With a knack for twisted and crunchy skipping percussion, and a love for warm and dirty vintage synthesizers, Sincere Trade bridges familiar retro sounds with modern production skills. Call it IDM if you want - but this music has groove and is meant just as much for the dancefloor as it is for the shoe-gazing chin-strokers. Sincere Trade adds a different dimension to Dross:tik, as the label continues to redefine its musical direction with each release. The brainchild of Carl Heindl, Sincere Trade has been creating a stir in the Toronto electronic music scene for the past couple of years with numerous live performances and self-CDR releases. With the release of his debut album "If You Cannot Beat Them" (Dross:tik Records), Heindl has crafted a sound uniquely his own. Drawing on the early influence of Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode, Muslimgauze, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno; Sincere Trade has crafted an album that draws from the past while shaping the future. Various appearances in local Toronto magazines and regular radio exposure on college and commercial airwaves (including Brave New Waves on CBC) have set the stage for a highly anticipated debut album. Sincere Trade is also busy at the grass roots level as a promoter (along with events partner Knifehandchop), responsible for the now infamous "Math Hooker" events that feature a variety of electronic music styles, dj's and live acts all under one roof. Breaking through the traditional mold of music and culture has become standard practice for this motivated young musician.

Solter, Scott
One River (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US As its title suggests, One River's sound - created from processed guitars and tape manipulation, as well as found objects and voices - takes inspiration from the movement of water. Each track contains several layers of musical currents, painting a shimmering surface above slow-moving drones of "undertow." The album's seven parts combine to form a continuous, flowing piece, with titles that suggest a journey both through physical space and through memory. Solter's engineering prowess and compositional sensibilities shine throughout the entire record. Scott lives in San Francisco, and makes his living as a studio engineer. Aside from working closely with John Vanderslice in recording the singer/songwriter's last several albums, his production and/or recording credits include albums by Erik Friedlander, Ester Drang, the Mountain Goats, Spoon, the Court & Spark and William Lazarus among others. In addition to engineering at Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone Studios, he owns and operates his own recording space, currently called Pueblo St. One River is Solter's second solo album, following The Brief Light released last year on Manifold Records. Scott Solter's One River is the sort of perfectly realized ambient work that will slowly weave itself into the fabric of your day-to-day existence. At least, it has for us here at Tell-All. Like the best albums by artists such as Stars of the Lid or Windy and Carl, One River is a beautiful piece of music that we're constantly turning to when we need to transform a room into a space for thought; when we're on the subway to work or a plane to visit home; when we're in the woods, at the beach, or navigating the city; and, oftentimes, when we're drifting off to sleep in bed. for fans of: brian eno's ambient works, stars of the lid, eluvium, windy & carl, sigur rós, keith fullerton whitman.

Tender Trap
6 Billion People (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 30TH)
PS, US 10 songs. Twenty years on from the NME's legendary C86 cassette, with anniversary shows featuring key artists planned at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts and a Bob Stanley-produced documentary in the works, Tender Trap's new album is striking proof that some of the original protagonists of that movement are still making intelligent and engaging pop music. As lead singer of the seminal Talulah Gosh, the proto-riot grrrl Heavenly and the classy pop act Marine Research, Amelia Fletcher was the voice and face that launched a thousand fanzines, an iconic presence whose influence can be traced in bands as diverse as Le Tigre and Belle and Sebastian. Together with her cohort in the latter two of those bands, Rob Pursey (guitar), and Marine Research drummer John Stanley aka DJ Downfall (bass), Tender Trap formed in 2001, releasing one album to date, the coolly electronic 'Film Molecules'. With the addition of the crisp drumming of The Magnetic Fields' Claudia Gonson, '6 Billion People' marks a move away from the pared-down approach of its predecessor towards a sound recalling the best of the band's previous incarnations. This is immediately evident on the big chorused title track, Rob Pursey's sub-sonic backing vocals uncannily reminiscent of erstwhile collaborator Calvin Johnson, while recent single 'Talking Backwards' is a pop rush of shimmering guitars and mellifluous vocals and 'I Would Die For You' marries a chugging rhythm to an ethereal melody. The short-but-spiky 'Applecore' ups the sass quotient as Amelia demands answers from an indecisive lover to a series of oblique questions over a stop-start bassline, whereas the spacey-keyboard sounds of 'Fahrenheit 451', the heartfelt '(I Always Love You When I'm) Leaving You' and the haunting album closer 'Dead and Gone' lend the album variety and depth. '6 Billion People' is Tender Trap's most fully realized work to date, a collection of sumptuous tunes and bold arrangements that makes a claim to be one of the best pop albums of the year. Perfect for fans of The Concretes, The Magnetic Fields, Le Tigre, and C86 indiepop. In a nicer parallel universe, Amelia Fletcher is the most influential artist of her day. -NME

Tilly and The Wall
Bottoms Of Barrels (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US The result of five Omaha residents with a penchant for classic 60's pop, boy/girl harmonies, and Americana folk records, Tilly And The Wall celebrate the petulant, determined, feisty nature of youth. They rejoice in tales of dreams followed, mistakes made, and hearts broken. Their debut, "Wild Like Children", consisted of eleven perfectly formed songs bursting with enthusiastic hyperactivity, while emanating a bittersweet melancholy of long lost summers and misguided first loves. This, their follow-up, takes their signature sound to a new level. The choruses are more rousing, the tapping more intense, the instrumentation fuller. Guaranteed to make you love the band even more than you probably already do.

Unitus
Caretaker (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12TH)
PS, CANADA The Anti-Socialite of the Toronto breakcore scene, Unitus (Daniel Ross) makes his return to fame and fortune as he delivers his much anticipated second full length album, "Caretaker". The follow up to his debut album in 2002, "Cross Contamination" (D-Trash), "Caretaker" is an evolution in the Unitus sound, experimenting further with breakbeats and melody while still preserving that familiar dirty edge. Unitus has struck a balance of deep emotional melodies, while still laying waste to everything in his path with heavy industrial-guitar drones, slower bpm jungle beats and a gritty feel. "Caretaker" is power noise with real power, industrial with an edge, techno without the presets, and breakcore with melody. Never conceived of as an alter ego, but rather as a container in which his eclectic musical tastes and experiences could be combined, Unitus was constructed by Daniel Ross in Toronto, Canada, during the summer of 2000. Informed as much by the visceral quality of early industrial artists like The Swans, Big Black, and Godflesh as by the detailed production work of later electronic artists like Aphex Twin, and Autechre, Unitus was an ambitious project from the onset. An early three track demo received welcome attention from Canada's own digital hardcore label D-Trash Records, and laid the foundation for the release of "Cross Contamination" in early 2002. A fusion of breakcore, drum & bass, industrial, guitars, and electronics into an unrelenting wall of sound, "Cross Contamination" proved to be an underground success. Having played alongside such artist as Venetian Snares, Merzbow and Heartworm, the Unitus live act is a simultaneous action of laptop beats, live guitar riffs and various distortion pedals and effects boxes. With the release of the newest album "Caretaker", on Dross:tik Records, Unitus has positioned himself as one of the top artists in Toronto's vibrant underground music scene.

Vetiver
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Special limited edition vinyl for their 2004 debut. "Like the tall, narrow grass that is its namesake, Vetiver is fragile sounding but strong, densely layered with melody, texture, & rhythm yet uncluttered...Andy Cabic's wistful tones at times remind one of Nick Drake, hobo folk, & even Cat Stevens as they meander along the dusty road of Americana." SF Bay Guardian. Incl. guests HOPE SANDOVAL (MAZZY STAR), DEVENDRA BANHART, Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Joanna Newsom, others.

Vetiver
To Find Me Gone (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
Ps, US The album that herald's Andy Cabic as one of the current generation's finest songwriters. While touring the world as a member of DEVENDRA BANHART's band, Andy has expanded Vetiver into full on singer/songwriter project. Songs of remembrance & recollection while embodying the duality of presence & absence. Musically, there's a dreamy Topanga Canyon vibe on select songs (maybe that's the pedal steel calling on "No One Word"), and thereÕs also plenty of crunchy candy for those who have appreciated Cabic's recent nod toward the magic of '70s-era Fleetwood Mac (check out the screaming guitar outro of "Red Lantern Girls"). Yet everything is simply, amazingly Vetiver, not anything else; To Find Me Gone is Andy Cabic's own original statement, one that many will consider as one of the finest albums of 2006.

Vitaminsforyou
Legend of Bird's Hill (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, CANADA Both a product of Winnipeg's rich experimental electronic music community and its uncompromising indie-rock scene, Bryce Kushnier under the guise of Vitaminsforyou has been creating music for all contexts since 1998. His unique sing-along sound might evoke whispers of the Postal Service, Manitoba/Caribou, or Schneider TM, but 99% of listeners agree that they've never heard anything resembling his shy plundering of pop, psychedelia, fey techno, and folk. Almost three years since his last LP. This new one features contributions from GHISLAIN POIRIER, EMM GRYNER, his occasional band the Wednesday Afternoon Players, and other members of the Canadian music landscape. "The electronic equivalent of an afterglow"-Magnet

Walker, Scott
Drift, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US It's been nine years since Walker's last album. "An increasingly revered figure, Scott Walker is a singular craftsman, one of rock's few individuals to demonstrate a willingness to both embrace elements of the unfashionable and ignore prevailing trends, yet also display an acute awareness of contemporary sound" - Pitchfork.

Walkmen
A Hundred Miles Off (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US The Walkmen have been solidifying their position as one of the most important bands in the alternative music community with their previous releases, "Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone" and "Bows And Arrows". Extensive touring, media prominence, critical acclaim, national modern rock radio airplay, and TV performances have helped establish the band in the music community. "A Hundred Miles Off" is their most solid effort yet. "Dylan meets Joy Division" - Uncut. "The dramatic epic sweep, the urgent, chiming guitars, the upright snap of the drums - it's all here" - Bust.

Wire
Chairs Missing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 15TH)
PS, US With its Eno-esque synth textures, Chairs Missing has been often cited as the evolutionary link between punk and post-punk. In general, the lyrics are darker than those on Pink Flag, even morbid at times; images of cold, drowning, pain, and suicide haunt the record, and the title itself is a reference to mental instability. Originally released in 1978 and now available for the first time on 180 gram audiophile vinyl. Original artwork.

Wire
154 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 15TH)
PS, US If Chairs Missing is the transition album from punk to post-punk, 154 is definitely of the latter genre. Synth moves to the forefront on this 1979 third album from Wire along with melodies that help humanize the electronic textures. Named for the number of gigs the band had played to that point, 154 shows how far this band had come in three years over three albums. Original artwork. First time on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

Wire
Pink Flag (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 15TH)
PS, US Originally released on Harvest in 1977, Pink Flag is perhaps the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk. Exhibiting severe art school damage, Wire careens at breakneck speed through 21 songs in 36 minutes to create an album that has influenced bands for nearly thirty years. Original artwork. 180 gm.

Wooden O
A Handful Of Pleasant Delites (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)
PS, US An obscure and rare record from this folk act led by James Harpham, (who plays the recorder, an ancient flute-like instrument) the album was originally released by Middle Earth in 1969 - the same label as Arcanum and Writing On The Wall - and feat. an interesting blend of acoustic folk, baroque medleys, jazz improvisations and experimental music constantly shifting from pastoral atmospheres to urban neurosis.

Yokota, Susumu
Wonder Waltz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US On what may be his most unusual album yet, SY is joined by Iva Bittova (BANG ON A CAN), Japanese singer & fashion icon HAHIMI KARIE, & French DJ ALEX FROM TOKYO. A phantasmagoria of unusual sounds, textures, spectral voices & deep beats that could have been directed by Ingmar Berman or Ang Lee. A deep web of sound encompassing everything from dub, folk, techno, gamelan, guitar raga, classical & avant garde.

Young, Richard/Simon Wickham-Smith
5 Years (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Venerable duo's first release since 2001's Lammergeier. After recording and releasing nearly twenty albums between 1990 and 2001, Richard Youngs and Simon Wickham-Smith attempt an opposite approach to music making-an annual meeting to record a solitary ten-minute track. The resulting songs, each named for an intervening year, show the duo remarkably unaffected by the elapsed half-decade. Their signature mix of electronically treated percussion, ululating noise, and hand-on-the-knob tweaking continues to adapt "real human" instrumental expression to musique concrete sensibilities. First album in 5 years!
