Parasol New Arrivals • May 15, 2007

Hello all,

Boy, oh boy! This new postage hike has Paul and I scrambling to figure out the simplest solution that will not invade your pocketbook to the extreme. We’d like to thank you good folks in advance for bearing with us until we get all the wrinkles ironed out.

In other news, last Friday we had two new prehistoric-like visitors in the shop. Yes, two small birds found their way in to Parasol HQ and had me screaming and running in the opposite direction! In case you all didn’t know, I have quite a bird phobia. It makes living on planet Earth rather difficult, at times. But hey, I’ve learned to deal in my short thirty-two years.

As you all know, we enjoy jabbering but now we’ll jabber about something that might interest you. The new releases!

Currently we’ve unleashed the new Dungen CD from its shrinkwrap and let me tell you, it’s quite the mind/time trickery that we’ve come to know and love from our Scandinavian brethren.

Remember, Richard Lloyd and the Sufi Monkeys are on tour this week... He's playing at Schubas in Chicago tonight (5/15), then the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland Wednesday (5/16), The Khyber Pass in Philly on Thursday (5/17), at TT The Bear's outside Boston in Cambridge Friday (5/18), and back home to Knitting Factory in NYC on Saturday (5/19). And what's a Richard Lloyd tour without some good oldschool rumormongering? Can anyone who was at the Magic Stick in Detroit Rock City last night fill in the details on the "brouhaha" before the show? Before his set was cancelled and he and various and sundry Sufi Monkeys were escorted to the city limits? According to Richard he battled employees and customers (and police officers?) and has the lumps to prove it! The Dude's got rock-n-roll flowing through his veins.

And now, Angie is desperately seeking Susan, well not really Susan but Nansi Nevins’ solo record from 1975. Ms. Nevins belted it out for the band Sweetwater. If you have a map to this gem, you very well may find the map to Angie's heart. Give us a hoot 'n' holler if you're willing to run a copy off for our beloved den mother.

Look both ways before crossing,

Royal & Paul

Ronderlin " The Great Investigation" CD $13.75 (TOMT)
Johan Lindwall from Love Is All returns with a new Ronderlin album, another shimmering slice of beautiful Swedish pop. Like their last album there are layers glittery guitars, luscious acoustic arrangements and heartwarming vocals, plus organ, strings, horns and piano. Note the recent shift towards electronic pop like New Order and even Pet Shop Boys. Ronderlin's debut album, Wave Another Day Goodbye, was released by Hidden Agenda in 2002.

1888
Honey, I'd Kill
PS, US Born out of the desire to engage in a musical spectrum of unlimited boundaries, 1888 have slowly grown into their own. HONEY, I'D KILL... is the debut album from Norfolk, Virginia's very own royal sonic family. Recorded & produced by singer-songwriter Brad Rosenberg at 1888's Clay Garden Studio, the band have created a body of work that has its own nervous system and pumps its own blood. The main arteries consist of Rosenberg, drummer Bobby Rangel and contributing singer-songwriter Daniel Driskell whose performances live and in the studio define the 1888 sound. There are voices within this music that call out to you from your past, plead for your return. Leaving you chilled or comforted, sometimes in a hysterical way, the answer is almost clear. Happiness and sadness seem to no longer have an emotional explanation. This musical experience is definitive; the theme is infinite.

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (ON SALE)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

Ann, Keren
S-T
PS, US FILTER: "Move over, Leslie Feist. You've had your week. Now it's Keren Ann's turn. Another beautiful singer-songwriter with a gorgeous voice, Keren Ann plies an alluringly cosmopolitan sound -- fitting, because she divides her time between Paris and New York. This self-titled album is the follow-up to 2005's Nolita, and it finds a U.S. home on the same label that releases Norah Jones' records. Keren Ann should prove perfect for hipsters who find guilty pleasure in breathily crooned lounge ballads but think Ms. Jones is a little too commercial."

Antigama
Resonance
PS, US These guys are firing on all cylinders, combining the raw power of old school grindcore w/ the spastic acrobatics of modern technical metal. Roto-coaster drumming blasts through rough, angular riffing, creaqting a chaotic vortex of apocalyptic agression & post industrial spite. Precision insanity, catchy misdirection & psychotic momentum.

Au Revoir Simone
The Bird Of Music
PS, US Brooklyn's pop darlings are specialists in bringing out the heart from within the machine, conjuring a gorgeous, child-like effervescence via pieces of plastic, metal & wires. Their songs resonate with an organic warmth that defies their instruments of choice: three keyboards & a drum machine. Layers of synths anchored by palpitating drum machine blips & frosted by ethereal vocal melodies display that the subtle moments in human interaction are the very ones the band enjoys describing most.

Bad Spellers/London Apartments
Fall In Love
PS, US Filtered vocals, quirky pop melodies & glitchy beats characterize the sound of this debut EP release. The album includes 3 tracks from each band plus the title track, which was recorded together. Soft vocals, broken beats & layers of synths give a dark, yet uplifting mood to the London Apartments' portion. The Bad Spellers pick it up w/ quirky indie pop love ballads. The final track combines the best of both bands by allowing Justin of The London Apartments to showcase his skills w/ beat sequencing alongside The Bad Spellers' keyboard hooks & lyrics from both bands. An affectionate collection of bedroom pop gems w/ enough of an electropop edge to attract fans of acts like The Postal Service, Sigur Ros & The Notwist.

Bella Vista
Self-Titled
PS, US Not the West Coast poppers with previous Matinee/Orange Records singles, but an all new different outfit comprised of Rex Shelverton (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Bringetto (bass) and Cary LaScala (drums), Bellavista is a collaboration of childhood friends who grew up in Northern California. Bellavista are otherwise remembered as three of the final members of Vue. Vue released 2 albums on Sub Pop and an EP on RCA, and performed with legends The Rolling Stones, BRMC, Franz Ferdinand, and The Faint. Bellavista's self-titled debut captures the raw energy reflecting their stripped down sound. With production that is free from the interference of outside influence, Bellavista breaks down the barriers of mainstream music. With an image that would put some of today's rock bands to shame, Bellavista is the answer to feel-good music that you've been waiting for. So if you think rock is dead, check out Bellavista.

Ben & Vesper
All This Could Kill You
PS, US "All This Could Kill You" is a fiercely beautiful and mysterious collaboration between husband and wife BEN + VESPER and their cast of siblings, grade school friends, brand new friends and friendly strangers. Produced and recorded by DANIEL SMITH (DANIELSON), this 13-song album smartly navigates through wildly disparate genres and styles and lands squarely in the ranks of good music that you simply cannot be without. If Ben + Vesper must be classified, one could parse it as such: 1/3 English Country Lane, 1/3 Croonsville, 1/16th Motown, 1/32 Brazilian Psychodelialand, 1/32 Dark Mythic Forest. All comparisons aside, this is music that innocently holds hands with innovation and accessibility. "All This Could Kill You" is an album that is 100% human and still winsome to the masses. This recording achieves what all timeless music does: to look squarely at the sufferings of this life and hold out hope like a weapon for all to wield, and to have fun all the while.

PS, US In a city delivering high caliber retro-rock acts on a regular basis, Vancouver's Bend Sinister feels right at home. Successfully weaving the brilliance of Brian Wilson w/ the finer points of Supertramp & Yes, this is an astonishing & captivating debut. Dare I say Mars Volta-ish.

Blau, Karl
Dance Positive
PS, US According to Karl Blau, the world needs a little more Bret Lunsford, guitarist for Beat Happening & member of the band D+. So on his latest release, Blau takes the words to D+ songs and runs them through dance beats and echo machines, metamorphosing the style to give Lunsfords words new positions. And though the lyrics are the same, Blau often embellishes the vocal melodies, sometimes completely changing them. Dance POSITIVE is light- hearted & sometimes silly, but always keeps Lunsfords thoughtfulness in mind & is designed to inspire movement.

Blue Gene Tyranny
Out of the Blue
PS, US For the first time on CD, here is the official reissue of 'Blue' Gene Tyranny's first album from 1977 (originally one of the first Lovely Music releases) beautifully remastered, with new artwork and 24-page booklet. Blue is a Grammy-nominated composer and pianist who has performed on records by Robert Ashley (Perfect Lives), John Cage, and Laurie Anderson, yet this is quite different. Composing for what is essentially a chamber rock ensemble, a cast of female vocalists, and himself on the Polymoog and RMI synthesizers, Blue has created a song-cycle that reflects his intensely melodic and free piano technique in a polished studio record. Out of the Blue elegantly combines adventurous New Music technique, the style and appeal of pop music, and the grace of classical music to form an unclassifiable and totally revelatory whole. The album consists of the sublimely poppy "Next Time Might Be Your Time," the searing and soaring instrumental "for David K.," the soulful, contemplative hymn "Leading a Double Life," and finally the casually-epic 26-minute for voices & electronic and acoustic instruments, "A Letter from Home"- upon reissue declared an "ambitious and moving masterpiece" by the New York Times.

Brakes Brakes Brakes
Beatific Visions
PS, US Less dementia, more beauty from the artist formerly known merely as Brakes, recorded in Nashville. PITCHFORK: "The Beatific Visions is dominated by direly catchy and fully fleshed-out songs that pop like punk, lilt like country, mutter politics, and reek of the garage...Brakesbrakesbrakes straddle the silly-serious fault line without slipping; Hamilton's more refined vocal style-- rambunctious, squalling, charismatic and tuneful-- is a terrific conduit for such vibrantly contrasting content. If the pre-apocalyptic fear is omnipresent, so is the reckless abandon. The Beatific Visions is the shimmy at the end of the world, wide-eyed and wild as it should be."

Good-Bye, Woland!
PS, US Picture a bearded gypsy, a dead-eyed Ice Queen reigning over blanketed bodies strewn across an endless field, & gunslingers armed w/potatoes. All of them wander & list, ghostlike, in swirls of guitar, drums, cello, glockenspiel, whistle, & musical saw. Recorded at Wavelab Studios in Tucson, w/producer Craig Schumacher (CALEXICO, NEKO CASE, ROBYN HITCHCOCK, IRON & WINE). Yonder's captain, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & earthly guide,
Ryan Pfeiffer, creates a haunting blend of gothic-folk & psychedelic alt-country melodies w/contemporary lyrics & a multitude of indefinable elements. He is an enigmatic storyteller, a former truck driver, philosopher, maritime cadet, orchestral musician, & lawyer whose otherworldly music emanates from a rich & often bizarre catalogue of life experiences. Clientele
God Save The Clientele
PS, US On their third full-length, The Clientele are setting free their inner Monkees with a lovely blend of Big Star twisted powerpop, Byrdsian country achin', and flashes of The Beatles at their most joyful and upbeat. The ghosts, half-light, and uncertainties remain, but included in this music is a newfound optimism. With the addition of piano and violin, the band paints from a broader palette, adding splashes of pedal steel and slide guitar to their already lush songs.

Dungen
Tio Bitar (ON SALE)
PS, US New album! Over the past two years, the profile of Swedish psychedelic rockers Dungen has grown at an alarming rate, from a cult studio project into a worldwide musical phenomenon. And on Tio Bitar, we're hearing the end results of an outpouring of success and support - one which has, for once, inspired the creative processes at hand to make something wholly new and original, yet remaining within the same sphere of emotions that fostered Dungen's three previous albums. Gustav Ejstes, Dungen's founder and principal member, made Tio Bitar (translated, "Ten Pieces") - a bracing display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence - largely by himself, with the assistance of guitarist Reine Fiske. Gustav wrote the songs, and played all of the instruments on his own, with Reine on many lead guitar and bass parts; his style of play puts him well within the top ranks of modern guitar heroes past and present.

Einsturzende Neubauten
Funf Auf Der Nach Oben Offenen Richterskala
PS, US Imagine a child that's been given a toy with detailed directions. Frustrated with its complexities, the child throws out the directions and chucks the toy against a wall, proceeding to step on it, bite it, smash it, and ultimately break it into as many pieces as he can. Bored with merely making as much noise as possible with the toy, the child begins to examine its parts and how it works. Though the child puts it together in a way that was not intended, the child becomes enamored with the new toy. Funf Auf Der Nach is where Neubauten truly grab hold of their broken elements and fashion them into something completely unique and (relatively) contemporary at the same time. Take their sleazy, spaghetti-westernized cover of Tim Rose's "Morning Dew" for instance, and the structured manner in which the record glides by. Very subdued and darkly ambient throughout, it's nowhere near the aural riots of yesteryear. For its lack of cacophony, and as restrained and formed as it is, Neubauten are just as unsettling, gripping, and tension-ridden as ever -- they're just finding a new way to be all of that. You expect the big release during the closer, "Kein Bestandteil Sein," but you don't get it. Funf auf der Nach is like watching a stalker cleverly follow its prey for miles, only to watch it shy away just short of lodging a knife into the back of the followed. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Einsturzende Neubauten
Haus Der Luge
PS, UK Einstürzende Neubauten's sixth album, 1989's Haus der Lüge, is a real eye-opener as well as a turning point for the Berlin-based band. For one thing, you can hear how much more attention is being paid to rock idioms--clearly an influence from frontman Blixa Bargeld's moonlighting as Nick Cave's guitarist. More important, though, is that the metal bashing, glass breaking, and electric drilling--in many ways the be-all, end-all of the band's early, musique-concrète-influenced sound--is here harnessed in subservience to downright tuneful compositions. The unmistakable message: Hey, we're "real" musicians, too. Still, Neubauten neophytes will undoubtedly find listening to Haus der Lüge a bit like having a dentist clean their ears. The opener,
"Prolog," sounds like a German poetry slam held in a subway tunnel, and "Fiat Lux," a 12-minute opus kicked off by 30 seconds of buzzing bees, is bound to get up your bonnet. Elsewhere it's a different story. The beat-heavy "Feurio!" projects an industrial-dance energy, and the lilting "Ein Stuhl in der Hölle" sounds like it was meant to be chanted in a beer hall. But the crowning achievement here is the title track, an epic, foot-stomping, Dantean allegory that culminates with God shooting himself. Simply awe-inspiring.

Halber Mensch
PS, UK Though it's a bit less intentionally noisy than previous Neubaten material, 1/2 Mensch is, in a way, the group's masterpiece. The inspired use of such "traditional" instruments as a grand piano alongside the band's characteristic blazing percussion make for a record similar more to their compositional influences like Stockhausen than their nearest contemporaries, Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire. The record that showed Einstürzende Neubaten could rise above the concept of noise for its own sake to reach another level of noise-oriented post-punk music, 1/2 Mensch is an excellent feat of industrial music. --AMG

Drawings Of Patient Ot
PS, UK Recorded in London, England; Berlin and Hamburg, Germany from January to August, 1983. 2006 digitally remastered reissue edtion of the pioneering electronic iconoclasts' second full length album originally released in 1983. The title of the album is derived from paintings by Swiss mental patient Oswald Tschirtner whose drawings are highly regarded by collectors for their disconnect between logic and reality. Thus an appropos metaphor for the concept of the band's music, which grows ever tighter (if that were possible) in context of their artistic vision. The CD comes in a digipak with accurate original artwork.

El Hijo
Las Otras Vidas
PS, SPAIN El Hijo is Abel Hernández, whose sheltering voice used to appear on Migala, possibly the best Spanish indie band ever. Surrounded by old book fantasy, Abel has written nine notes full of folk, country and pop sung in Spanish that thrive in a personal songwriting. Las otras vidas (The other lives) is an enchanted tapestry where knights ride miles of moor to know who they are, where love is finally gonna be fruitful and the horizon seems to be moving further away. Far from Migala's dregs of American tradition or instrumental post-rock, El Hijo is a glance at the gone days.

"No Shouts No Calls" is an album of enticingly irregular brilliance. BLENDER: "Electrelane effortlessly assimilate a wide cut of moods and influences - the off kilter harmony of the Velvet Underground, the droning insistence of Krautrock heroes Can, the bratty brashness of feminist popsters Le Tigre - into a heartfelt batch of art-pop that never sounds snobby"

Field, The
From Here We Go Sublime
PS, GERMANY 12" version; three DJ-friendly tracks from the debut album from The Field. The blissful, addictive, transformative sounds on From Here We Go Sublime absolutely speak for themselves. Samples abound throughout, immediately giving you a feeling of warmth and familiarity on the first listen that you can't quite grasp... like a warm glove on a cold winter's day. The Field's music literally breathes: harmonious drones mingle with the dizzying swell and reversed motion of bass drums and euphony. There is a ceaseless, cyclical signature familiar to all his music, but that's the most exciting part of The Field -- the beautiful dynamic of beats and space that exists in endlessness. Ten perfect tracks of narcotic, propellant stuff -- an important and significant debut that promises Willner quite a few more laurels to come.

Field, The
Things Keep Falling Down
PS, GERMANY "Bizarre thoughts and classy patterns are not necessarily mutually exclusive, and the same with madness and method. However, one of the lessons you might learn from in-depth musicological considerations is that there may be right-minded, crazy gains which are far more than mere distortions of language, hi there, and welcome to Kompakt's head quarter. The so far unknown Swedish artist Axel Willner cracks every single security system installed at Kompakt's high security demo section by using poppy, self-loved cut-up-classy-splatter-loop-bits-and-pieces-patterns. Most convincingly, the field starts at the point where Profan had already been ten years ago: that is he transfers the basic essence of rhythm inherent in every 'Wicked Groove/Sexy Loop' into a kind of virtual space of deconstructing the self in order to liberate this loop from any discourse-infected, intellectual ballast of its author by means of a kind of mental washing machine. As long as I can dance to it." -- Roy Makaay.

Fields, The
Everything Last Winter
PS, US New album from uber-hyped UK band, the foolow up to their much-adored 2006 single "If You Fail We All Fail". FILTER: "Fields bridges folk, fuzz, and rawk with a refreshing sincerity. Probably helps that the quintet has already demonstrated in its brief one year of recorded existence greater pop panache than most of the recent Anglo slag that have attempted similar feats, such as the Doves, Elbow, and tomorrow's Heads, Knees, and . . . . The group frequently receives comparisons with singular bands like Pentangle and My Bloody Valentine, but never mind the press: It's bollocks, as usual. Fields warmed U.K. souls with the thick hold of 'shrooms and lollipops on its major-label debut, Everything Last Winter, last month; now it's time for stateside audiences to cop a fix."

Flash Hawk Parlour Ensemble
Plastic Bag In A Tree
PS, US CHRIS FUNK (DECEMBERISTS) has made a gorgeous, instrumental space-folk recording with a little help from his friends. In 2005, Chris Funk & his family moved into their new home in Portlands historic Mississippi neighborhood. He would play various instruments on his porch during hot summer nights, which caught the attention of his neighbors. He soon found out there was an unusual amount of musical activity on his block, and that he was surrounded by closet folksmen & recovering band geeks. Funk invited his neighbors in for weekly living room hootenannies, and this recording documents those times in an array of cover songs & original "jams" written in a haze fueled by fellowship, libations & other unmentionables.

Thieves Among Thorns
PS, US This new collection of songs, stripped bare of the Orchestras usual members, reveals a quieter, sadder aspect of their work, and was recorded after Nick dreamed of commiting suicide with a Bible in a Geneva first-class hotel. As a result, Thieves Among Thorns is all about forlorn piano lullabies, insecure percussions & torpid classical arrangements, eerie ballads & numbing rythms, terminological inexactitudes & sleepy hyperboles. Ten desolate tracks where Nicks laptop arrangements & quiet, inconsolable vocals interweave with pianist Jasmine Pinkertons eastern-Europe sensitivity & Nicholas Davis' precise guitar. Guitar
Dealin with Signal and Noise
PS, US On this his new work "Dealin with Signal +and Noise" Lueckner delves deeper furthering his open attitude even more. On 4 tracks of the new album he cooperates with the Japanese Singer Ayako Akashiba (who also worked with him on all recent Guitar albums), and on 3 tracks he worked with the American guitar band Voyager One (Seattle). Its obvious what this means: With his new album, Guitar is going back more in the direction of psychdelic guitar-sound. This is a Sea of Sound. The Sound-Sea is wilder and heavy even - but between the storm of noise and feedback you could always hear the sirenes. But dearies - don't be afraid, nobody dies.

PS, US HIG is Ted Flynn, veteran of L.A. & Chicago indie-rock scenes and St. Petersburg, FL-based guitar anti-hero. His previous release garnered immediate comparisons with Slint & Seam. The album opens immediately showcasing Flynn's playing- from the gentlest of drones to wrenching, weeping walls of furious resonance. Houseguest
High Strangeness
PS, US Houseguests live shows have, in the past, turned into debacles, with shirt removal, sing-alongs, and drunken arguments between band members as par for the course. Much more than just five badly behaved college bums. The songwriting is well honed & the sound is the bands own. The group has seen much of the horror of life, but would rather instill hope than coddle despair. The albums fourteen tracks range from frenetic pop barnburners to heartfelt, anthemic ballads. Recorded & produced by Patrick Carney (BLACK KEYS). "While the abandon of their stage presence is something to behold, what they are capable of committing in the studio is staggeringly beautiful, skewed pop." -PopMatters

Katamine
Lag
PS, US Katamine's disturbingly stripped, windswept odes to woe take us into the thicker parts of the woods where direct light
is shrouded, allowing only for occasional glimmers to expose its bare, heart-twisting body of work. Assaf (EX-LION TAMER) morose voice creaks in that muffled, ashen solitude reminiscent of human nature at its most introspective & vulnerable. The absence of a verse-chorus-hook structure, replaced by a sort of a freeform, godless sermon, takes folk to more avant-garde territories. The mould is cracked open by overbearing isolation, and from there it soars independently, sorrowful, morbid & haunting.

Kebnekajse
III
PS, SWEDEN This is the first reissue of the third Kebnekajse album, originally issued by Silence in 1975. Kebnekajse's music ignored traditional musical boundaries (which must be a hallmark of the term "progressive music"). III continued very much in the same vein, but this time with a more sharply honed politicized edge. This was programmatic, instrumental music with a message. Here you'll find mostly folk tunes but also an instrumental country tune by Kenny called "S:t John" and Ingemar's instrumental ballad called "Balladen Om Björnbär Och Nätmelon" ("The Ballad of Blackberries and Netmelon"), where jazz and rock are glued together by a pure, Swedish folk-tone. The album is finished with an African melody "Mariamá!" pointing towards the next album Ljus Från Afrika (Lights from Africa).

Kebnekajse
II
PS, SWEDEN First reissue of the second Kebnekajse album, originally issued on Silence in 1973. "It was something in the air," said Kenny Håkansson in the booklet to their first album Resa Mot Okänt Mål (Journey to Destination Unknown). He was then referring to the Swedish lyrics and the name of the group. In the early '70s Swedish folk music was also "in the air." The progressive rock history book Scented Gardens Of The Mind says of this time-period: "...a clear change of direction towards a new kind of Swedish folk-rock with fiddle and electric guitar to the fore, but it also added the hot African percussion of Hassan Bah and jazzy experimentation." This is exactly the type of recording Kebnekajse hoped for with their second release: country fiddles flirting with jazz rock and plenty of African beats.

Kebnekajse
Resa Mot Okänt Mål
PS, SWEDEN First ever reissue of the first three Kebnekajse albums on Silence. This debut album (the title translates to (Journey to Destination Unknown) was originally issued in 1971. Liner notes for these three are in Swedish only, but English translations can be found on: http://www.silence.se/nyheter/english.htm. Kebnekajse were a loud and hard Swedish rock band. References abound from Cream, Mountain, November and even Jimi Hendrix in a perfect amalgam of British hard rock and psychedelia from the American west coast enhanced by cryptic Swedish lyrics. There is something unmistakably Swedish in Kenny Håkansson's way of handling his guitar -- something unspecified, a tone, a Nordic mood. Kebnekajse did not play electric blues, or have its roots in Afro-American music but was rather torn up and then replanted into the Swedish soil --just to see if it could grow and flourish. Their name is taken from Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden.

Imagine Our Love
PS, US The debut from this LA-based group is a tour-de-force of gorgeous folk-pop melody and uplifting sentiment. Produced by Tom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devendra Banhart, Brightblack Morning Light), and featuring the incomparable soprano voice of Becky Stark, the album includes twelve new songs and original artwork by drummer and noted artist/cartoonist Ron Rege. The band's slightly tongue-in-cheek demands for world peace and harmony are subtly undercut by minor key modes and absurdist lyrics. The result is deeply entertaining and subversive.

Lindt, Virna
Shiver
PS, UKAn extended CD reissue of 'Shiver', the debut album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organisation in 1983. Written and produced by Virna Lindt and Tot Taylor, the acclaimed Shiver album offers 12 slices of chic, Cold War pop informed by 1960s spy thriller soundtracks and musique concrete, including the singles Attention Stockholm and I Experienced Love. The album has been digitally remixed and re-modelled from the original mastertapes, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. The new edition of Shiver also features bonus track The Windmills of Your Mind, a rare Michel Legrand cover version from The Thomas Crown Affair originally recorded for the Crepuscule movie compilation Moving Soundtracks. Contemporary reviews for Shiver:"Intrepid undercover agent disguised as a top international fashion model sets out on a secret mission behind the Iron Curtain, armed only with a firm sense of fair play and a gadget-filled powder compact" (NME); "Euro-eccentric. Virna Lindt casts herself as a mysterious blonde in a loving pastiche of Continental movie music" (Sounds); "Only the surly amongst you can fail to acknowledge the splendour of Virna Lindt's new single I Experienced Love, and the equally thrilling Shiver lp, the epitome of Compact's sleek, chic Sixties tease" (The Face); "Imagine a pastiche of all those old Sixties spy series, like Danger Man, The Avengers and The Man From Uncle. Well, this would be the perfect soundtrack to go with it" (London Evening Standard). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and detailed dossier on Virna Lindt. Lindt, Virna
Play/Record
PS, UK The first release on CD of 'Play/Record', the second album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organization in 1985. Written and produced by Virna Lindt during a three-week holiday in London, Play/Record tackles girls who cannot stand the colour red, the numbing effect of the new media, and subterfuge and skulduggery in her adopted home town (the single My Home Town). The album has been digitally remastered by close collaborator Tot Taylor, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. Unfortunately Virna abandoned music forever after creating Play/Record, leaving the world a poorer place. Contemporary reviews for Play/Record: "Ms Lindt deftly conveys a sense of breezy, delirious Sixties camp. Arch instrumentals such as the title track and Add It Up are nothing short of wondrous, and the album is a delightful and accurate evocation of a period when music was allowed to be fun" (Melody Maker); "A uniquely crafted voiceover masterpiece, the diverse tempo moves from the sunny waft of single My Home Town to the more sombre tones of Any Colour But Red" (Sounds); "Lush, intelligent and very, very sexy" (Underground). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and liner/recording notes.

Mainliners
S-T
PS, SWEDEN Swedish garage-rock howlers Mainliners are back! After their praised debut release, Bring On The Sweetlife, on Get Hip Recordings they're now back and ready to strike with a second smashing album. Their music has grown, grown from garage music to a more modern and refined pop and rock music. Feedback, furious guitars, catchy pop melodies, warmth and soulfulness plus much, much more.

HIGH BIAS: "Sweden's Mainliners started out as a hot-shit garage rock combo, but, like a lot of modern groups trying to outdo the Hives, they've matured. Mainliners pushes pop melody and textural variety to the forefront-the band call still barrel ahead full throttle (see "Good Storm"), but doesn't crash and bash constantly. Singer Robert Billing has improved immensely, adding subtlety and nuance to his performances, where before he merely blared. Besides rocking out, the band successfully pulls off smoldering ballads ("A Secondary Truth," "Bourbon & Ice") and snappy pop songs ("Round Five," Olivia," "Is This Satisfying...?") as if to the hook born. Nicely done, lads."

Mary Timony Band, The
The Shapes We Make
PS, US Their Kill Rock Stars debut represents the latest stage in the evolution of one of the most important voices in underground music. Flowing from the mystic prog-laced veins that have informed her art for the past decade, this record builds upon the stark rebellious austerity of 2005's "Ex Hex" and imbues it with warmth and formidable urgency. Equal parts clairvoyance and virtuosity, Mary (formerly of Helium) and her musicians paint in broad strokes a vivid landscape of colorful musical shapes. Much more than a gifted crafter of melody, Timony is a talented multi-instrumentalist, recording among other things, intricately layered keyboards, banjos, analog synths, viola, the melotron, and a vintage Casio PT1.

Melnyk, Lubomyr
KMH
PS, US Lubomyr Melnyk's debut album from 1978, KMH, is an unheralded touchstone of minimalism. Performing solo on piano with a speed that suggests multiple pianos playing together in harmony, Melnyk nearly brings out the full sound of the instrument all at once. His music is lush and maximal yet it possesses the restrained, slowly evolving nature found in music by artists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Melnyk developed his unique approach to minimalism while working with dancer/choreographer Carolyn Carlson (who also worked with Igor Wakhevitch) in Paris during the 1970's. Carlson's influence led Melnyk to create music that is dramatic enough for the stage yet meditative enough for deep listening, a version of minimalism with the engimatic traces of Satie. Remastered from the privately produced master tapes with new artwork and an 8-page photo booklet.

Zidane: 21st Century Portrait
PS, US Soundtrack to the documentary of the controversial head-butter, err football star. Confirmed football fans, the Glaswegian band are responsible for the perfect soundtrack to Zidane, a documentary portrait of the French footballer. THE SUNDAY TIMES: "Mouthwateringly beautiful". DROWNED IN SOUND: "Yet, the most loin-girdingly exciting material on this soundtrack comes when structure is sent to the subs' bench and is replaced by the 'Gwai's reliable but rarely-used squad player - ambient, droney experimentation. 'Wake Up And Go Bezerk' is a gorgeous piece of hazy, strung-out and strangely uplifting melancholia, embellished by acoustic guitar twangs, and with subtle piano notes and gentle feedback fading in and out of the mix, possessing in abundance the gravitas required. Meanwhile, 'It Would Have Happened Anyway' is a wonderful marriage of Spacemen 3-style droning FX shot through with the echoes of a football match's sonic detritus."

Moore, Sean
Signs of Potential Life
PS, US His debut full-length is filled w/ soaring highs & solemn lows w/ a taste for dynamics only a classically trained musician can create. The songs deal w/ loss in the best way possible - through beauty & dignity, patience & honesty, & immediacy coupled w/ a soft-footedness. It shows his command of every single facet of crafting a perfectly poignant record. "He indulges in a blend of Elliott Smith/Sufjan esque melody filled singer/songwriterism, a dash of Ben Lee-esque balladeerism, a few dots of lo-fi courtesy of the likes of Ariel Pink, & finished off w/ a few hints of Brian Wilson-like wonder." ~ The Runout Groove

Mystery Jets
Zoo Time
PS, US The Mystery Jets embody British pop at its most invigoratingly weird. Already, previous singles have seemed like dispatches from some starry-eyed parallel universe where Syd Barrett never dropped out but played on with Einsturzende Neubauten, where the irresistible pop of Dexy's can happily co-exist with the Krautrock explorations of Can, and where the most forbidding musical forms of the past, like prog rock, are gleefully reinvented in the smash-and-grab spirit of the present. With "ZooTime", be prepared to have your life forever enriched by a band relentless at breaking boundaries and enlightening one's soul with much of their own.

Nonloc
Between Hemispheres
PS, US The solo guise of Mark Dwinell, the guitar-slinging ringleader of East Coast spontaneous trance rockers BRIGHT. Nonloc seeks to focus on the microtonal universes & hypnotic netherworlds minimalism awakens from repetition, while constructing ivory towers of melody enveloped top to bottom with softly barbed hooks. Acoustic & electric guitars provide focus instrumentation, but the elaborate color accumulation of Between Hemispheres is dominated by alternate layering of acoustic instruments such as piano, accordion, mandolin & cello. Whereas Bright will use vocals sparingly as instrumental color, Nonloc spices up the instrumental forays by peppering tunes with lyrics that are direct & at times strikingly personal.

Olausson, Jakob
Moonlight Farm
PS, US Sweden's Olausson is a sugar beet farmer and his record of ten songs is somehow both comforting and unsettling, concerned with the classic subjects such as the garbage, the flowers, one's mother, and the love of them all. Laid thick with a vague dissonance, they possess a mask of fog/haze, but the trail between writer/performer/song is not often trodden in such a deftly crystalline manner. "From one loner to another, this is everything that the phrase 'private press' conjures up and more. A modern classic" - David Keenan, The Wire.

Orange, Adrian
Bitches Is Lord
PS, US A revelation of the highest order as Adrian Orange sets out to capture the energy, presence & full-bodied force of a Thanksgiving live performance. This new album has more of the meaningful songs that Orange does so well, but this time around things just sound fierce. Hints of Johnny Cash & Crazy Horse-era Neil Young are touchstones. Minimal dirges & cloaked political blues butt up against triumphantly colorful anthems. Drums smack with simple, raw intensity while guitars curl & bounce around Oranges deep, older-than-his-age voice, sounding out cries, laments & triumphs unto the dawn of this troubled world.

PS, GERMANY This is the perfect record for a sunny Sunday morning summer picnic. The new album by the fantastic French band Orwell contains wonderful songs with French and English lyrics; sounds somewhere between Californian soft rock and the nouvelle P!O!P! scene. Sunshine-P!O!P!-chansons for the tgv-jetset, one could say. If you like Tahiti80 you'll love Orwell. Ov
Noctilucent Valleys
PS, US There exists a sense of optimism in Ovs humming analog drones, a floating light within a pack of ominous clouds. Nocilucent Valleys takes Ov's expansive palette, blurrs & disguises instrumental thresholds & presents sheer sound augmented by mysterious & mesmerizing gentle clamor. Initial impressions slowly morph into demonstrative bliss, synthesizing the organic & the unknown. The new project from prolific, longtime collaborators Christine Boepple (Skygreen Leopards contributor) & Jewelled Antlers Loren Chasse. Ov pushes the duos established scopic pallette further into the void. Touching upon traditional minimalism & psychedelic free-form folk music, NV plays like the soundtrack to an otherworldly fairy tale, with foggy oscillations guiding the extrinsic myth.

Page France
Page France And The Family Telephone
PS, US The band's fifth release in four years is the product of many hands, but the work of one heart. Principle songwriter Michael Nau's lyrics call to mind Dylan or Nilsson ghostwriting for Margo Guryan, all well-accompanied by a range of upbeat instrumentation. "Rich in melody and rife with dreamy natural/biblical imagery...Michael Nau's adolescent voice sweetly floats over occasional female backing vocals and sparse instrumentation (organ, glockenspiel, acoustic guitar)" - Spin. "Delicate chamber folk" - CMJ. "Spiritual-folk auteurs" - Alternative Press. "Pillowing melodies and effervescent hooks" - DIW. "Nestled within Page France's languid sound are Ben Fold's earnestness and a melodic sensibility reminiscent of early Neutral Milk Hotel" -Baltimore City Paper.

Pentangle
Time Has Come
US, PS A decade ago, another reissue with the same title - and annotated by the same guy - helped revive interest in Anne Briggs. Back then, a folk revival seemed about as tenable as New Labour's "Cool Britannia". Come the mid-late noughties, however, a disparate swell of hirsute avant-folkies are carrying it on with some gusto, winging original greats like Bert Jansch along in their slipstream. Now, with a recent appearance at the Radio 2 Folk Awards, it's Pentangle's - the dauntless folk-jazz collective Jansch forsook a solo career for back in 1967 - who are feeling the creak of history's wheel.

As indebted to Chico Hamilton and Ravi Shankar as they were to modal folk, and hardly shy of sneaking in a Miles Davis quote, Pentangle - of all British folkies - got rhythm; in fact it's difficult to imagine landmarks like Nick Drake's Bryter Layter or John Martyn's Solid Air being made without them. Subjected to the rolling traction of Terry Cox's drums, the bend and belch of Danny Thompson's double bass, the idiomatic mastery of guitarists Jansch and John Renbourn, and Jacqui McShee's siren-savvy soprano, hitherto stolid ballads swing like dervishes.

Longtime fans know all this, and the remastered album tracks sound wonderful, but the real news is the previously unreleased material included here (30 songs' worth), not least the soundtrack stuff. Burns standard Tam Lin, recorded for Roddy McDowell's obscure thriller, and the theme for '70s wildlife documentary Christian The Lion both sound great. The highlight, though, is The Best Part Of You, a groovy slice of folksploitation which could easily have graced Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls.

Hey Eugene
PS, US The genre-bending, best-selling, supremely talented & raucously fun twelve-piece ensemble that the New Yorker calls simply "beautiful," "sophisticated," & "breathtaking"-returns with Hey Eugene!, a sonic journey anchored by deft songwriting & a no-holds-barred dose of cabaret showmanship. Delivered with sultry grace by lead singer China Forbes, Hey Eugene! shines throughout-from the golden-era Hollywood melody of "Everywhere" to the French cabaret of "Ojala." Other collaborations anchor the set as well: the pan-world "Dosvedanya, Mio Bombino" with its Latin-meets-Russian beat & globetrotting subject matter, plus the Forbes-Lauderdale-penned sexy sway of "City of Night." Peruvian percussionist Martin Zarzar debuts the romantically complex "Mar Desconocido" and bassist Phil Baker adds the quiet beauty of "Cante e Dance"

Photosynthesis
PS, US Plants have evolved well beyond their sparse & mystical roots to sail along a rich & diverse confluence of mind-enhancing streams. Reaching deep within, Plants unfurl Photosynthesis, a haunting foray into gently rippling netherworlds. Aptly named, Photosynthesis illustrates the subtle skill in which Plants extract & blend a variety of sounds to concoct a heady elixir of minimalist psychedelia. A rotating cast of support for the husband & wife core offers a diverse array of instrumentation, including acoustic/electric guitars, cello, singing saw, organ, electric tones & a guest appearance from Jason Buehler (NICE NICE) on banjo & "piano box". Gently swirled together, Plants invoke images of a quiet solstice ritual involving early Popol Vuh, the fusion-folk of C.O.B., and a flower-powered, V.U.-era John Cale

PS, US One of Thee Most Important Records of the late 70s, truly the birth of post-punk, incoporating dub, free jazz, and glitch before glitch was even invented. Think Gang of Four for starters and then every weird rock album since... Features standout classic tracks "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" and "We Are Time". ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Emerging in the late-'70s post-punk era, this militant gang of leftist radical politicos from Bristol, England, specialized in a funk-driven cacophony of sound that was abrasive, strident, and ultimately very exciting... Remate
No Land Recordings
PS, SPAIN REMATE is a musician trained in classical music since was wearing short trousers and long socks. His first hero was a heroine, a skinny Bielorrusian piano teacher, who taught him how to play piano for hours without hurting his hands and wrists. The second hero was a Southafrican guitar teacher with a curly toupée, who instilled him the significance of the posture if you wish to turn into a good guitarist. After these pre-Olympics he became a singer-songwriter without limits: from folk to blues, from rock to gospel, from country to pop, always with the ambition of the one who knows that you must deserve your own influences, and that having style means much more than quoting other stylists. His distinctive features are, apart from playing piano avoiding pain, and having a good posture and/or a stance of defiance with the guitar... to be a very good singer, sometimes high-pitched ("Ballads Don't Change Things", 2004), and keen (also in person); at the beginning his voices sounded like a drunk Ry Cooder or between J. J. Cale and Neil Young; then (since "On Junk", 2005) a cocktail of Kurt Wagner (Lambchop) and Wagner without Kurt (he would have a voice as cavernous as his operas). Lately his singing has been non dissimilar to Bob Dylan yapping in a small town library. The process, of course, finally turns up to Remate's signing to Acuarela for a brand new ouvre created like a labour of love. "No land Recordings", his new double album with 25 songs, is jam-packed with clouds of latex, giant wings, toxic passion, dinosaurs, enemies, falls, one-eyed singers, pain in vain, kitties and beautiful ladies, love at first sight, howls, fireflies, propeller beanies, TV shows, sports, calls, Superman, glowing colours, bankruptcy, tenderness, mends. Whereabouts are the best songs being born? Where do they grow up like unhappy children? Which are the shops where you can buy propeller beanies?

Ronderlin
The Great Investigation
PS, SWEDEN In 2002, Ronderlin's debut album, "Wave Another Day Goodbye" was released by our Hidden Agenda label in the US. Their guitar driven pop and melancholy Nick Drake-ish melodies were given a warm reception. Over the last five years, the band's focus has shifted a bit more electronic and experimental, with hints of Pet Shop Boys and New Order. On the other hand, a multitude of various inspirational sources may be found in Ronderlin's music; Camel, Indochine, Wilco and Fleetwood Mac to mention a few. The multifaceted sound is created by a multifaceted band. Since the first album, the band has spent time in musical escapades in pretty different directions. While Kalle has found inspiration in the Far East, Johan toured the world with energetic Love is All. Per played the trumpet and organ in 60s soul/pop inspired Irene and also in different pop and experimental acts like Maison Blanche and Nude Fox Ensemble. Mats extended his folk influences in Mildendo and in bluegrass projects. Despite the eager escapades and investigations, it's clear that the band members, their musical luggage respectively, belong to Ronderlin - and it shows in the music they create together.

Rumskib
S-T
PS, US Darla is proud to release the debut record by Danish nu-gaze group Rumskib. Rumskib is the Odense, Denmark duo of Keith Canisius (Guitarist, Vocalist, Composer, Producer) and Tine Louise Kortermand (Singer). Keith produced the debut record with Jonas Munk (Manual), who programmed the beats, made the electronic sounds, and played synthesizer. Rumskib's debut record begins with a Simple Minds New Gold Dream style intro. A rough & repetitive MBV Loveless style guitar line kicks in. Next an aggressive baggy beat begins to pump making Rumskib sound nearly like Curve. Then a very lovely surprise: A very pretty, Lush style guitar change comes and simultaneously the wall of sound vocal harmonies begin - like Emma, Miki... and Bjork! There's no denying Rumskib are derivative, however, Rumskib has such command of all the genre's key sound elements and their own pop songs are so damn good the band gloriously claim the new shoegaze sound as their own. Rumskib's sound is at once modern and classic, blending a strong love for early 90s shoegazer bands such as Chapterhouse and Lush with the sensibilities of grand Scandinavian 80s pop such as A-Ha and Roxette, all flavored with harsh noise-rock guitars and crunchy micro-programmed beats. Sometimes their sound is up-tempo, almost danceable like The Cardigans meet St. Etienne. At other times their sound is thick, heavy, and romantic recalling The Cocteau Twins or Simple Minds. Rumskib manage to be both surrealist and accessible; complex but straight forward. Vocalist Tine Louise creates harmonies so beautiful one would think they came from some mysterious wonderland (or Victorialand?) and Keith Canisius' lyrical call & response guitar playing is intelligent and evocative. Combine all this with well crafted compositions and Jonas Munk's trademark head-spinning, multi-layered sound sculptures, and you've got a work of undeniable beauty. Track list: 01. Hearts On fire, 02. Springtime, 03. Dreampoppers Tribute, 04. Where Are The Flowers, 05. Ferris Wheel Blackout, 06. Think Eyes Away, 07. You're My Japan, 08. Sneak, 09. Crucial Love Games, 10. Ovation Outsiders, 11. Girl Afraid, 12. Love At First Sight. ""Re-evokes my dancing feet with the fragrance of Liz Fraser insanity there on top.. humm..There' s some serious celebration going on in Scandinavia now." -- SERENA MANEESH ""Springtime" kills, kills again, and then kills some more. And then bathes in in the blood of its own awesomeness." --JATUN

Satie, Erik
Cubist Works 1913-1924
PS, UK A new CD in our series by visionary French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), following the success of previous releases Vexations, Socrate, Musique de la Rose + Croix and Dada Works, on which we present selected Satie recordings with explicit links to the unconventional, the mystic and the avant-garde. Cubist Works offers four works composed by Satie between 1913 and 1924 for his collaborations with the artist Pablo Picasso. These include piano and orchestral versions of his scores for the celebrated 'Cubist' ballets Parade (1917) and Mercure (1924), as well as the seldom-heard organ 'diversion', The Statue Found (1923). The 60 minute CD also includes The Puppets Are Dancing, written for the French Futurist dancer and poet Valentine de Saint-Point in 1913, and the ludic Trois Valses distinguées du précieux dégouté ('Three Disgustingly Precious Waltzes'), a barbed swipe at rival composer Maurice Ravel and premiered at an exhibition of works by Picasso, Matisse and others in 1916. The solo piano works on this CD are performed by Bojan Gorisek. The booklet includes archive images and detailed liner notes by James Hayward.

Schwarz
Heavengazers
PS, SPAIN Schwarz return with "Heavengazers", recorded in Germany last summer. Embracing a brunch of pirouettes full of sound and melody, Schwarz have created a unique and personal language based on bands like Loop, Spectrum, 13th Floor Elevators, The Stooges and even Can. Ten songs that swing between precision and exploration, risk and fun. Psychedelic pop is not an easy game to play when you live in Murcia, a small town in eastern Spain. Let's just say that the distribution/communication channels don't really know what's going on there. But isolation can sometimes turn into your best allied, being away from pressure and trends. So that's how Schwarz have developed such an intense and vibrant career. Alfonso Alfonso, Juanma Martínez and César Verdú have always been true to themselves. Since their debut "This Songs Mean Nothing" in 1998, they've followed their path silently and with firm steps. A path where psychedelia turned into a lighting fire, krautrock expanded sound as a magnifying glass and indie rock became a hand to hold. The warm welcoming of "Hard Listening" brought more glances to these Martians, as so did their acclaimed live performances. That's how they reached "Heptágono", an odd album recorded with the Spanish masters of voltage Manta Ray. "Heavengazers", their first Acuarela release, can only ensure Schwarz's sound expansion. By the way, this tortured trio reinforces their indescribable style filled with hypnotism, energy and personality. Drone-rock, kraut-rock, art-rock... Why using such "euphemisms" when we only mean "ROCK"? Dirty and intense rock. Rock that, ahem, really rocks. A genre that assumes and works with different possibilities of creating a new type of noise. Sonic spirals remind us of Jessamine, Quickspace or Oneida, with whom they share influences and a pride of being very fond of risk. This new release by Schwarz evolves us in a new rhythm from which we can't be blinded. A rhythm that will guide us to the end of a tunnel of atmospheres drilled by dense, cloned, mysterious music where you won't even notice a hint of seriousness or importance. Schwarz knows how to put the exact amount of sugar needed in what's salty, and the right pinch of salt to what might taste too sweet. To explore and enjoy seems like the premises of "Heavengazers" because it contains songs that are catchy (you can't take them off your head). All of this to reach an album in which there is nothing missing or needed, promising to bring another dimension (even one more!) live.

Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel
Hole
PS, UK Linking up with Some Bizarre in the early eighties Thirwell adopted the "Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel" moniker for the release of two of his most well know early albums "Hole" and "Nail" in '84 & '85 respectively. With a collision of electronics, tape loops and harsh beats and vocals these albums helped define the burgeoning underground industrial scene in London at the time. With lovingly restored artwork under direct supervision from Thirwell himself these two albums are now available in deluxe digi packs which do the original LP's artwork justice like no CD issue has ever done. Both albums have also been re-mastered by Scott Hull (Herbie Hancock, David Bowie etc.) to bring out the best in these milestone releases freeing them from the bad CD mastering these titles have suffered from in the past.

Section 25
Part-Primitiv
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce a brand new studio album from cult post-punk group Section 25, who previously recorded four studio albums with the celebrated Factory Records label. Formed by Blackpool brothers Larry and Vin Cassidy in 1978, Section 25 gigged extensively with Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, New Order and the original Factory stable, completed two North American tours, and recorded keynote albums Always Now (1981) and From The Hip (1984) with Martin Hannett and Bernard Sumner as the respective producers. Their sublime proto-techno single Looking From A Hilltop remains an oft-sampled club classic. Although Section 25 disbanded in 1986, core members Larry (bass/vocals), Vin (drums) and Jenny Cassidy (keyboards/vocals) regrouped in 2001, joined by guitarist Ian Butterworth (ex Tunnelvision) and multi-instrumentalist and engineer Roger Wikeley. Although work on the new album was set back by the untimely death of Jenny Cassidy in November 2004, the group began gigging again in May 2006 and have since visited France, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Dublin, London and Poulton-le-Fylde. Part-Primitiv was produced by the band at West Orange Studio, Preston, in 2007. Stand-out tracks include Can't Let Go, Dream, Carbon and You Never Make Your Mind Up. As the title suggests, the new album combines raw post-punk power with retro-futurist electronics, including two tracks written and sung by Jenny. Section 25 will be promoting Part-Primitiv with further live shows, including an American tour in May 2007, and will also be following their memorable appearance in the 2006 documentary Shadowplayers with spots in upcoming documentaries on Factory (BBC4) and Joy Division. A new live DVD, Communicants, is also available (LTMDVD 2496).

PS, GERMANY The perfect record for a weekend trip to Paris. A new and sensational record by spearmint that will put some sparkle to the days of this summer for sure. Paris in a bottle is a collection of shimmering song-pearls - very British and simply very Spearminty. Guitar P!O!P!, northern-soul, 60s smoothness, 80s-keyboard-sounds - little song cocktails that will enchant you instantly. Imagine Paris in a bottle to be a car then it would be a Citroen DS with Jarvis Cocker in the driving-seat and Claudine Longet next to him. Well done, spearmint. Very well done, indeed!

Swans
Cop/Young God/ Greed/ Holy Money
PS, UK Originally released as three separate LPs: COP, GREED, and HOLY MONEY plus the EP YOUNG GOD. Swans: M. Gira (vocals); Westberg, Mosimann, Crosby, Kizys, Jarboe, Gonzales, Parsons, Nahem. Additional personnel: Lo, Prosser, Erskine, Thirwell. Producers include: M. Gira. Enigineers include: Jorge Estaban. Recorded at Vanguard Studios, New York, New York & Platinum Studios, Zurich, Switzerland in February through May 1984; Intergalactic Studios, New York, New York in January 1986; Soho Studios, London, England in April 1986. Digitally remastered by M. Gira (1998, Griffin Mastering, Atlanta, Georgia). U.K. version. Swans play some of the most brutal songs that can still be called music. This two-disc set collects the band's third, fourth, and fifth albums, along with an early EP. Clearly influenced by Throbbing Gristle and Test Department, Swans take the basic template of industrial music, remove the last vestiges of punk rock--along with any semblance of humor--and create something so punishing, so monumentally "heavy," that it seems as though they really have to wrench out every sound. The first disc focuses on the body--the mental as well as the physical. "Why Hide," a gut-wrenching slow grind, features the charming "I need you more than I hate myself / You hurt me then hurt yourself / Why hide the lie?," delivered in Michael Gira's sandblasted and glass-shattered voice. The second disc ups the speed of the songs, lyrically focuses on power, and keeps up (occasionally exceeding) the graphic intensity of the earlier material while also exploring new ingredients. "Blackmail" introduces a piano and female vocals, and "A Screw" features horns. This music is in no way fun or pleasant. A glance at the track titles ought to make that abundantly clear. Swans are, however, compulsively interesting. Amazing double CD re-issue of four Swans early albums. Crawling out of the same noisy, arty New York underground that sired Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch, Swans created a dark, abrasive, murky, slowed-down noise rock that served as a starting point for their ruminations about alienation, depression, depravity, and the disturbing side of human nature. Singers Michael Gira and Jarboe have been the group's only constants over the years; Gira has taken the group from its early confrontational shock tactics to a more varied, mature attack. The band first appeared on record in 1982 with a self-titled EP, and these early releases document their search for the musical vocabulary to express their ideas effectively. Female singer Jarboe joined the group for 1986's Holy Money and brought a gentler, more relaxed dimension to Swans' sound.

Textile Ranch
I Believe in Lassies
PS, SPAIN Once upon a time, computer games didn't rely on graphics to suck you in. The first "Text Adventure" A game which relied on your imagination to unfold it's magic, has formed the inspiration for our favorite release of the year so far. The second album by David Roy and Stephen Scott, I BELIEVE IN LASSIES is homage to lo-fi brilliance in a world gone pro-tools mad. You see, it's about addressing the simple things. IBIL is a record about girls by boys too shy to talk to them in person, and one that communicates in an aching swirl of acoustic and digital lo-fi, the longing of not only meeting that spry-eyed girlie, but actually being able to say hi. What must be a crippling disability for David and Stephen is a blessing for the rest of us, as we get treated to 10 tracks bursting with the self-confidence that can only come from living in hope. Crafted from acoustic guitar, Casio keyboards, circuit bent speak and spell machines, and live drums recorded to a "very, very old 8-track". The songs have a layered aesthetic in the vein of Adem and Tunng. But this is more than an exercise in nerdy bedroom electronica: "I have tried to move away from that" asserts David. "The Golden Portion was very much sequence-based, computer-recorded, programmed beats, tons more keyboards and hardly any guitar. I felt it had been done to death already, so i wanted to make a grander sounding folk record with loads more guitars and more vocals too" Songs are as important to the boys as textures, and the melodies come at you with such self-assurance that you don't know whether to meet them with a bear hug or duck for cover. With collaboration comes perspective, and Stephen's vocals liberate David's soundscapes, adding a psychedelic edge in the vein of My Bloody Valentine, but with a dose of skewed realism.

Thilges
La Double Absence
PS, US Western experimental music meets Oriental art music. A specific, new way of playing had to be developed; some pieces are completely notated, others are improvised. The music is based on magams, traditional Arabic scales, that were assigned to particular musicians. This offers everything a good pop record asks for: catchy melodies, complex rhythms, & a downright atmospheric density. The music is about bacchanal, melancholic, & difficult situations, thus simply about life. This is international music; timeless, beautiful, meditative, & complex.

Van Doesburg, Nelly (Petro)
Repertoire De Stijl: Bauhaus: Dada
PS, UK LTM are pleased to present an overview of the avant-garde piano repertoire of Pétro van Doesburg, performed at various De Stijl, Dada and Bauhaus soirees in Europe between 1920 and 1925. Born in Holland in 1899, Pétro met De Stijl movement founder and propagandist Theo van Doesburg in 1920. Over the next decade the couple lived in Wiemar (where Theo was associated with the influential Bauhaus art and architecture school) and then Paris. A Conservatory-trained pianist, Pétro accompanied her husband's lectures with selected modernist piano pieces, and also performed at Salon Dada soirees organised by Theo with Kurt Schwitters in Holland and Germany in 1922/23. Following Theo's death in 1931, Pétro established the De Stijl archive and was a buyer for Peggy Guggenheim. She died in 1975. The material on this 76 minute CD includes pieces by Erik Satie, Josef Matthias Hauer, Arnold Schoenberg, Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger and Jacob van Domselaer, whose austere Proeven van Stijlkunst (1913-17) offers an application of Piet Mondrian's neo-plastic principles to musical composition. The music is performed by noted Dutch pianist Peter Beijersbergen van Henegouwen. The CD also features a deluxe booklet featuring archive images and detailed historical notes by James Hayward.

Weisbard, Eric
Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I and II
PS, US It was the season of the blockbuster. Between August 12 and November 26 1991, a whole slew of acts released albums that were supposed to sell millions of copies in the run-up to Christmas. Metallica, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Garth Brooks, MC Hammer, and U2 - all were competing for the attention of the record-buying public at the same time. But perhaps the most attention-seeking act of all was Guns N Roses. Their albums Use Your Illusion 1 and 2, released on the same day, were both 75-minute sprawlers with practically the same cover design - an act of colossal arrogance.

On one level, it worked. The albums claimed the top two chart positions, and ultimately sold 7 million copies each in the US alone. On another level, it was a disaster. This was an album that Axl Rose has been unable to follow up in fifteen years. It signaled the end of Guns N Roses, of heavy metal on the Sunset Strip, and the entire 1980s model of blockbuster pop/rock promotion. Use Your Illusion marked the end of rock as mass culture.

In this book, Eric Weisbard shows how the album has matured into a work whose baroque excesses now have something to teach us about pop and the platforms it raises and lowers, about a man who suddenly found himself praised to the firmament for every character trait that had hitherto marked him as an irredeemable loser.

Eric Weisbard has been writing about music since 1989. He edited the Spin Alternative Record Guide and was a senior writer there for ten years. At Experience Music Project, the Seattle music museum, he put together the travelling exhibit "Disco: A Decade of Saturday Nights" and he organized the annual pop music conference.

Wooden Stars
People Are Different
PS, CANADA Eight years since their own The Moon and seven since their eponymous Juno award-winning collaboration with Julie Doiron, the beloved Wooden Stars have returned in perfect working order. Comprised of newly written songs and unreleased pre-hiatus material, People Are Different doesn't represent a departure for the Wooden Stars, nor does it bear traces of rust. In fact, this inventive, intricate record makes it hard to believe the band ever parted ways. More rock-oriented and less quirky than their earliest work, the quartet's latter-day material still challenges pop song conventions with gutsy arrangements and unique lyricism. Vocalists/guitarists Julien Beillard and Mike Feuerstack remain a formidable tandem, and songs like "Orphans" and "Pretty Girl" smartly entangle dark humour with measured optimism. The downer themes are tempered by stunning guitar parts and upbeat performances, such as the dynamic and infectious "Last Secret Infirmary" and the slyly romantic "Blackouts." The tight rhythm section of drummer Andrew McCormack and new bassist Josh Latour propel deceptively poppy punk songs like "Microphone" and the dizzyingly great "Boating Accident" in intriguing directions. The challenging post-punk edges of People are Different don't diminish its accessibility, easily enabling the Wooden Stars to remind young indie rockers of their singular influence.

Woolson, Raymond Scott
Accidental Grace Notes
PS, US RIYL: SLOWDIVE, MALORY, SIGUR ROS, ULRICH SCHNAUSS, COCTEAU TWINS. Raymond Scott Woolson is akin to a one-man Slowdive of the 2000's. Much how bands like Explosions in the Sky cull the best of their 80s/90s dreampop influences such as Cocteau Twins, Lush, etc. and bring them up to date with a fresh new sound, Raymond Scott Woolson does the same in bringing gorgeous layers of atmospheric shoegaze guitar work into the new millennium. Raymond Scott Woolson is a reclusive independent recording artist of ethereal guitar-driven instrumental music. Atmospheric and uplifting, his soundscapes hover along the fringes of the shoegaze / dreampop universe. A touch of melancholy here and there, a wistful feeling, but no doom or gloom. Woolson will not add to the burden of darkness in the world. His is the music of light. All of his songs have happy endings. ACCIDENTAL GRACE NOTES was released in 2006. This 50 minute CD gathers together 8 favorite tracks from 3 previous hyper-limited CD-R-only albums, and presents them as a unified sampler of his recent work. Despite the varying sources, the songs flow gracefully into each other, linked by intriguing field recordings, the whole forming a cohesive and satisfying journey throughout the length of the album. A strong believer in the Do-It-Yourself ethic, Woolson tackled every aspect of this home-made album himself, from the meticulous audio production to the art design and photography. The result is not big-budget perfect, but it is honest and original, two qualities sorely lacking in the majority of today's recorded music. Reviewers have had the following to say about the album: "...a steady, cohesive flow of washed-out beauty..." "...I'm lost in a sea of sounds..." "...a truly beautiful, haunting quality..." "...lovely, beautiful sonic soundscapes..." Mr Woolson lives in Western New York State. He has produced 4 albums of "ethereal instrumental" music to date. He does not perform live or make public appearances. He is available for interviews via the written word only.

Yellow Swans
Descension
PS, SPAIN 29 minutes-2 tracks. Yellow Swans are back and Descension is their most psychedelic recording till date, two tracks recorded while on tour that maintain the expansive and melodic qualities the Drift EP (their last year's release on Acuarela) presented, but harbor the intensity of a Yellow Swans show. Caged beast. Pete Swanson and Gabriel Mindel Saloman are the vibrant duo behind Yellow Swans. Working on improvisation and the use of either electronica or guitars and the assembling/reassembling of sound through a bunch of musical influences: hardcore, dub, death metal, hip hop, noise, jazz, folk, all mixed up by an unlimited creative process. An improvisional approach to music that creates a unique experience for each live performance. Swanson describes the music he crafts with help of Saloman as "a constantly evolving mass of psychedelic noise that is both physically arresting and physically liberating". An exercise of freedom. After self-releasing a series of EPs and limited copies 7", Bring The Neon War Home, their first album, came out garnering much recognition in the US. And so it did their sophomore record Psychic Secession, which contained some politically oriented lyrics. Drift was a unique presentation of the more melodic and gentle side of Yellow Swans. Shimmering guitars, electronic squalls, harsh walls of static and burning wires. Electronic grit smeared over gentle finger picked guitars, Martian melodies. As Drift, Descension is a consequence of months of live concerts and tours. Recorded live, this new release finds a more abstract line. This two drones stick to our heads for weeks. Swanson and Saloman go and totally lay a psychedelic trip where gauzy clouds of melodic whir inflate and expand covering our minds. Recorded in late 2006, these two pieces of ambient-noise show a new purified noise smog column that will guide us back to what we used to be.

Bergraven
Dödsvisioner (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Bergraven turns the traditional blast-and-flay aesthetic of "frost bitten grimness" on its ear and comes at you with sweeping riff dirges, winding cinematic passages, melodic guitar interludes, tortured-yet-vaguely authoritarian and Germanic vocal overtones and - get this - ambient pedal steel excursions. All of which is enough to make your head spin, especially if you're down with weirdness. "Dodsvisioner" is not your typical black metal experience, and Bergraven is not your standard Swedish killing machine.

Black Dice
Roll Up b/w Drool (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US A new two song 12"" EP. Reflecting another withering season in a Brooklyn basement rehearsal space, the band created a work of abandon, a sonic balloon to unfamiliar vistas. Both tracks offer something upbeat & hypnotic, looking far away from America 2007, while still retaining a familiar raw boldness & playfulness, existing in a wide gray area between jam bands & minimal techno.

Bonde Do Role
With Lasers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US Riotous Brazilian MC and DJ three-piece Bonde Do Role play baile funk - a flippant, punked-up take on Miami bass developed in Rio's favelas - and yet aren't from Rio. A characteristic of baile funk is its playfulness and mash-up guerrilla-style sampling. Grunge, heavy metal, and cheese were added to the melting pot here. Their SXSW appearances were the talk of post-festival blogs, described in many instances as a "Brazilian Beastie Boys" with their explosive performances and filthy lyrics.

Bongos, The
Drums Along the Hudson [special edition, bonus tracks] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12TH)
PS, US A parasol fave from the waqyback machine... Spectacular 1982 album (actually a collection of an EP and singles, who knew?) from Richard Barone-led pop outfit The Bongos. The original album's 15 tracks are augmented with 12 bonus songs for a total of...27! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Irresistible guitar pop." TIME OUT NY: "The Bongos' 1982 debut is one of the best albums to come out of the NYC area during the fertile, shadowy period between punk and new wave. A pitch-perfect mediation of the nervy energy of fellow Hobokenites the Feelies and the jangly guitars that R.E.M. would soon make famous, Drums Along the Hudson's concise songs and terse, cryptic lyrics sound just as fresh today. At least eight of the record's 15 insanely catchy songs (including the one that's 29 seconds long) would totally weaponize a mix-tape."

Brown, Steven
Brown Plays Tenco + Live 1988 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, UK Steven Brown is a core member of cult avant garde band Tuxedomoon. As a solo artist he has recorded some ten solo albums, including Music For Solo Piano (1983), Searching For Contact (1987), Half Out (1991), Nine Rain (1996) and Decade (2003). Brown Plays Tenco was recorded in Italy in 1987 and features Steven's own interpretations of five songs written by cult artist Luigi Tenco. Born in Cassine in 1938, Tenco scored many hits as a singer in Italy during the 1960s, but shot himself through the head at the San Remo Festival in 1967 after Ciao amore ciao (Hello, Love, Hello), failed to reach the final. The suicide note explained that his suicide was a gesture of protest against the jury's taste in music. Never available on CD before, Brown Plays Tenco has now been digitally remastered with twelve bonus tracks recorded live in Italy in 1988. These include in-concert renditions of songs by Luigi Tenco as well as solo material by both Brown (Besides All That, rwf) and Tuxedomoon (What Use?, Egypt , Lowlands Tone Poem). Artist Resume: Steven Brown was born in Chicago in 1952, and currently resides in Mexico City. Tuxedomoon formed in San Francisco in 1977 around the nucleus of Steven Brown, Blaine Reininger and Peter Principle. Following a string of releases on the Residents' Ralph label, the band relocated to Europe in 1981. Their dozen-odd group albums include the classics Half Mute, Desire, Suite En Sous-Sol, Ghost Sonata and Holy Wars. The latest TM album Bardo Hotel was released in 2006.

Cex
Sketchi (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Six years in the making, "Sketchi" is CEX'S densest, darkest, and longest album to date; slow-moving ambient dirges that are heavy on the beats and light on vocals (being instrumental and all). There are sounds in these songs that you will swear are not of this world, and truth be told, you never know with the Cex man. Take all your clothes off, paint your face, beat your fists into the floor and pray that this lasts forever. But it can't, and THIS STRANGE BREW IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO 1,000 COPIES. Showcasing the most controversial art in the history of TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD., each copy of "Sketchi" has been carefully assembled by hand and numbered by the loving fingers of our devoted and fatigued staff. Claudia Quintet
For (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US Since their founding in the late 1990s, TCQ has walked a unique path in contemporary jazz. Unlike most jazz ensembles where the particular musicians may come & go, drummer, composer & leader John Hollenbeck always wanted Claudia to be a 'band' with a sound not only determined by the compositions & the instrumentation, but with the actual players who perform the music. This conception is why Claudia has had an immediately identifiable sound since its inception. Drew Gress-acoustic bass, Matt Moran-vibes, Ted Reichman-accordion & Chris Speed-clarinet & tenor sax all make TCQ the fantastic band that it is. An astonishing band with a huge range of emotional depth & range & with appeal far beyond strictly 'jazz' listeners. For this, their fourth album, they've released an album of dedications. This album & band has wide appeal beyond just 'jazz' fans. ""This is a true ensemble from top to bottom, a sonic equivalent to a hand-woven tapestry.... Impressive." - Downbeat

Commodity (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US This is the first in a brand new series of singles called As & When by London live night/record label Club AC30. Deep Cut is a new band with some pedigree making noise around London at the moment, consisting of vocalist Emma Bailey, guitarist Mat Flint and bassist Simon Flint. Mat Flint was founder member of early 90's Virgin/Hut band Revolver, and has played bass in Death In Vegas for ten years. Mat was also resident DJ at Heavenly Social for four years. This first single has been produced by Tim Holmes from Death In Vegas. 'Commodity' is indie pop at its best: Strawberry Switchblade meets Jesus & Mary Chain, maybe a bit of Lush in there, or even Curve. Dog Day
Night Group (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US In many ways a pop group's success hinges on their ability to write memorable songs. DOG DAY'S "Night Group" not only delivers in this sense, but also shows how simple tunes can convey meaning, beauty, and honesty. From the playful intro "Lydia", named after keyboardist CRYSTAL THILI and drummer KC SPIDLE'S fanatical cat, to the sorrowful "Bright Light", a song about fate and last chances, the album moves through a broad range of content and mood. In the tradition of great pop bands, Dog Day keeps it simple on "Night Group." They are not a band who distracts by over-indulging or showing off. The beats pound straight through, the keyboard plays one well chosen note at a time, the guitars and bass follow suit. But unlike the countless bands toting incompetence as a selling point, Dog Day demonstrates mastery by playing tight and aggressive, taunting us at times with their understated abilities on tracks like "Vow", which plays with timing, starts, stops, and meanders. This album consistently makes the point that minimalism can be a compositional choice, not a foregone conclusion.

Plague Park (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Dark and minimal while noisy and earnest, the point of this duo was to be as sparse and repetitive as possible with the help of little more than vocals, guitars, and a drum machine. Jeremy Jay
Dreamland (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US JEREMY JAY lives in Angel Town. He plays the piano and sits out on his deck late at night and looks over the rooftops. Inspired by the cinema, his new record "Dreamland" is quite a unique record for him. A more experimental & classical record, this music was originally created as a "musik-movie", a soundtrack for a short film starring Jeremy Jay also called "Dreamland". While Jeremy is best known for his Buddy Holly-esque pop musings, "Dreamland" is a departure in that it is moody instrumental music composed on and for the keyboard, and feels like an Angelo Badalamenti score to a film by John Hughes. This ST. IVES release is in a HANDMADE EDITION OF 300. The artwork for the LP is a Jeremy Jay paper doll set. There are two different paper doll sets for two different cover styles. Each LP is unique & hand-wrought. Of course you could cut up the covers and put the cut-outs on your wall or just leave them the way they are in their sleeve!

Khan
Who Never Rests (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US "Who Never Rests" is a celebration of a man who is in full control of his sound and vision. With his previous albums on MATADOR, the journey was just starting. With "1-900 GET-KHAN" Khan launched the persona of a male hustler, selling himself to the audience by performing in a pair of underpants with "KHAN" stitched on the ass. It certainly got the party started! Then with "No Comprendo", Khan produced a living-homage to the artists that inspired him, collaborating with DIAMANDA GALAS, ANDRE WILLIAMS, KID CONGO POWERS, BRIGITTE FONTAINE, JULEE CRUISE, and STEREO TOTAL'S FRANCOISE CACTUS. He toured and produced with Kid Congo Powers (THE GUN CLUB, BAD SEEDS, THE CRAMPS) and he recorded and toured as Captain Comatose ("Going Out" and "Up in Flames") on Playhouse: one giant disco party! Now the party isn't really overŠit's just mutated into a celebration of Khan. "Honey, it's been a journey to the moon and backŠ" he sings on "Favor After Favor", and that summarizes "Who Never Rests" pretty well. Now he's quite literally found his voice. Six years ago, he had other people sing his songs and now it's him - solo. Unashamed. Upfront. Honest. All or nothing. Khan times 20!

Ladyhawk
Fight For Anarchy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Life is full of ups and downs. Sometimes you get up just to get down again. Sometimes you run just to feel the wind against your face, and sometimes you stand still to watch things crumble around you. Vancouver's LADYHAWK knows this. And they got up - way up - and entered a recording studio for a daylong session between tours in the first half of 2006. Perhaps they then soared too close to the sun, like moths drawn into the flame, only to fly again into the shadows, their wings singed. And then maybe, gathering their burned and broken instruments about them, they limped their way home, rearranging the pieces and sounds haphazardly, letting them all lay as they fell. The end result is the sound of four brothers breaking something down to create something new, reaching into the fire again. It is a shattering 6-song march called "Fight For Anarchy", all unmuzzled and jawing out, nothing edited or expunged. And on it Ladyhawk show that, like SPOON, DINOSAUR JR. or TOM WAITS, they have the ability to conjure growls, snarls, and storms of sound into musical lightning, never striking the same place twice.

Lewis, Wyndham
The Enemy Speaks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK The first CD audiobook of readings by Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), the influential British modernist writer, artist and self-styled 'Enemy' feted both by T.S. Eliot and Mark E. Smith. Lewis is best known as the founder in 1914 of the celebrated Vorticist art movement, an English variant of Italian Futurism. Publication of their journal Blast was interrupted by WW1, after which Lewis the artist pursued a parallel career as a writer of fiction, satire and criticism. Lewis spent the war years 1939-45 in penniless exile in America , yet carried on writing even after going blind in 1951. His many books include Tarr (1918), The Apes of God (1930), Blasting & Bombardiering (1937), The Revenge for Love (1937) and the trilogy The Human Age. His artworks include Workshop (1913), A Battery Shelled (1919), Tyro (1920) Red Portrait (1937), The Surrender of Barcelona (1937) and Portrait of T.S. Eliot (1938), and are regularly exhibited by galleries including the Tate, Hayward, Imperial War Museum and others. The Enemy Speaks gathers together rare broadcast recordings made by Lewis in 1938, 1947 and 1951 on various subjects in art and politics, as well as readings of three poems from One-Way Song, recorded at Harvard in 1940. The CD also features a dramatized extract from his Bloomsbury-baiting satire The Apes of God, recorded in 1951 with an introduction by the critic V.S. Pritchett. The CD closes with the recording of Sympathy that so vexed Lieutenant Lewis in his dug-out near Ypres in 1917. The CD features a deluxe booklet featuring archive Lewis images as well as historical notes by James Hayward. The CD has been prepared with the full co-operation of the Wyndham Lewis Memorial Trust.

Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love
Ends of June (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, US Initially intended as musical outlet for Kelly Dyson, Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love's full inception came in the form of a sudden, unplanned collaboration between Kelly and vocalist Natalia Brightmore. Instant musical chemistry coupled with a brief period of writing & recording yielded a complete body of bittersweet, forthright folk songs, self-released on the band's own Birds and Rodents label (UK) in 2004. Two years later, after randomly stumbling upon some breathtaking Low Low clips online, Portland, OR label Other Electricities realized there was something unique brewing overseas. The band with the impossibly long name occupied space in their ears and repeated listens only further reinforced the fascination. The two parties eventually got to talking and came to the conclusion that this music needed to reach a wider audience; these sounds just couldn't be slept on much longer. Ends of June is Low Low's second outing and first U.S. release, boasting twelve new, intimate tracks saturated in the same undeniable warmth and familiarity offered on their debut. Here, the music's immediacy and accessibility fails to wane even slightly, building upon the solid groundwork laid in the first album. Natalia's amicable departure and a change in line-up, currently featuring Kelly Dyson (guitar, lead vocals), Ellis Dyson (drums, clarinet, percussion), Chris Robinson (guitar, vocals), Hugo Edwardes (bass), Nick Guy (vocals, percussion), and Brian Lutchmiah (vocals, percussion), has filled out Low Low now more of a band then an "acoustic folk duo". Despite these alterations, no element of overall sound is compromised as new paths are traversed with regards to instrumentation and arrangement. Self recorded and produced in Ellis' bedroom studio, Ends of June showcases Low Low's progressive and deft grasp on songwriting. From the pensive yet infectious "The Way You Play," to the fluid lullaby "Happiness at the New Day," it's near-impossible to deny the resultant intrigue of each composition, and of the record as a whole. These songs beckon to be taken in again and again... Collectively, the band members live and work in and around Manchester, England. To date, they have shared stages with the likes of Regina Spektor and Six Organs of Admittance. Plans are currently being made for a re-master/reissue of Low Low's s/t debut, which should be available in wider release mid-2007. "As acoustic documents of the breakdown of a long-term relationships go, this is up there. Recorded lo-fi style - in a bedroom apparently - this affecting release combines breathless harmonies and fragile tunes to achieve a strange warmth. Also makes Belle & Sebastian sound like Motorhead." - The Crack "Rooted firmly in the world of low/no-fi folk, this is a charming record that recalls the same juxtaposition of fragility and strength of character that suffused the early Elliott Smith albums." - Tangents. For Fans Of: Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Six Organs of Admittance, Nick Drake Songs of Green Pheasant.

Madagascar
Goodbye East, Goodbye West (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US "Goodbye East, Goodbye West" is a refinement and growth of the MADAGASCAR'S unique sound. Each track uses crisscrossing accordion, saw, and glockenspiel melodies; anchored by bass, acoustic guitar, and percussion. These instrumental elements are perfectly punctuated with beautiful wordless vocals. From playful waltzes and clanky dirges, to minimalist scrapes and drones, to their arrangement of the Chanukah staple "S'vivon," Goodbye East, Goodbye West, is a uniquely satisfying and mystifying collection of songs.

Magic Bullets
A Child but in Life Yet a Doctor in Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, US The astonishing debut album by the San Francisco sextet Magic Bullets. A tour-de-force with 10 songs that make friends with the rich traditions of post-punk (Gang of Four), new wave (early Talking Heads) and C86 (The Wedding Present), whilst introducing themselves to contemporaries influenced by these scenes (The Walkmen, French Kicks) with their own secret handshake. Singer Philip Benson's poised, dynamic croon towers over his contemporaries, yet does not overshadow his own band's intricate musicianship - a crafty layering of Felt-esque melodies onto Bizarro-era chords. "Yesterday's Seen Better Days" launches the record with a C86 meets "Ticket To Ride" guitar riff, coyly anticipating Benson's dramatic album entrance. Benson's voice - energetic, yet inconsolable - coaxes the listener into a world in which deceptively bright colors are used to draw bleak pictures. "Heatstroke" is an unforgettable renewal of the classic new wave territory paved by The Stranglers and Power, Corruption and Liesera New Order.

Makoto, Kawabata
Hosana Mantra (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Inspired by Popol Vuh and originally released in a tiny pressing of 550 on vinyl from the inimitable Acid Mothers Temple front man. Licensed from A Silent Place. Included on this cd reissue are the bonus tracks from the even more limited 7" included with 100 copies of the original LP. Guitarist, violinist, performer on numerous traditional instruments, composer, leader of the Acid Mothers Temple, Kawabata Makoto expresses in this solo performance all his mantric cosmical vocations and spins them into space sonorities! He took inspiration from the Popol Vuh album of the seventies Hosianna Mantra, during his visit to A Silent Place headquarters in late Winter 2006. In a sunny Sunday noon spent in the country-side, eating and drinking Apulian specialities and listening to some great experimental records, Makoto and his Italian friends Pierpaolo and Pasquale, took the decision to start this cooperation. A few days later, back in Japan, Makoto recorded the Hosanna Mantra album at the Acid Mothers Temple between March 12th and 13th, using electric guitar, bouzouki and sitar. The result is this new fantastic sound coming from the cosmos. A simple gem of crystalline beauty."Music, for me, is neither something that I create, nor a form of self-expression. All kinds of sounds exist everywhere around us, and my performances solely consist of picking up these sounds, like a radio tuner, and playing them so that people can hear them. However, maybe because my reception is somewhat off, I am unable to perfectly reproduce these sounds. That is why I spend my days rehearsing. Where do these sounds come from? Who is sending them out? That is not something for me to know, and neither is there any way that I could find out. I simply believe that they come from the 'cosmos'. (Maybe other people would call God the source). Since I was a small child I have been prone to hearing ringing sounds in my ears and other sound phantasms. At the time, I believed that these were messages aimed directly at me from a UFO, and so I would gaze up at the sky. But once I started playing music myself, I came to feel that these noises were a kind of pure sound. And I promised myself that one day I would be able to play those sounds myself. It is only recently that I have begun to feel that I have been able to come close to reproducing these sounds in my solo guitar work, and in my INUI project. However, in June of 1999, I finally discovered my own 'cosmos' and I experienced an instant of total union with it!! That 'cosmos' is still tiny in size - although any cosmos can, by its very nature, be infinitely huge or infinitely small. The energy and vibrations contained within that it far exceeded my imagination in scope and beauty. I can only describe the miraculous instant when my 'cosmos' accepted my consciousness as MAGIC." Alive (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12TH)
PS, US Working within the fields of noise music for over 15 years, Marhaug has toured most parts of the world, both as a solo artist & as a member of the project JAZZKAMER. Lasse keeps on paying homage to his metal roots (this time Kiss` classic Alive). A selection of live recordings done all over the world in the period of 1998 to 2006. This live album features recordings done among others in Toronto, Bergen, Chicago, New York, Oslo, Baltimore & more. In many ways this is a travel letter from Lasse Marhaug to you! A travel letter in noise. Its starts out with a special piece that Lasse made for the Alarm Award (Norwegian grammy award). He was told by the label to "make ears bleed". Lasse succeeded, he made shockwaves through the audience that was dressed for party & easy listening, and he probably did one of his hardest & most violent tracks ever. This CD documents almost 10 years with noise, and it shows the development in today's noise scene as well as it documents the development of an artist that is today regarded as one of the most respected noise musicians & huge influence of todays noise scene.

Nadadora
Hablaremos Del Miedo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Nadadora's second album is bound to establish them as one of the most important bands in the Spanish independent scene. Their career has been on the up from the beginning, and after two records (mini CD "Aventuras dentro de cajas", 2004, and "Todo el frío del mundo", 2005) their popularity has grown enormously among fans. The 10 songs in "Hablaremos del miedo" will no doubt confirm all the expectations. In their new album Nadadora have managed to refine their style - the songs sound more sparkling and the emotions are more intensely transmitted. The solid foundation of the guitars is still present, as are the breathtaking beat changes which have made this band so singular. Among all this we find melancholy and tranquil moments in which Sara and Gonzalo's vocals duet masterfully. The result is a record with sharpness and balance, two characteristics which give the listener a broader perception of Gonzalo Abalo's new compositions and a better understanding of the band's spirit. A more mature set of lyrics completes this brilliant picture. "Hablaremos de miedo" is the band's most ambitious take on the various paths of pop and rock and the way they handle them to sculpt their very own sound. Variety is one of the staples of this record, and the band show their improving skills in songwriting, as they move further away from the formula of previous installments: instead of the usual bunch of hit-singles that made up the backbone of their past records, on "Hablaremos de miedo" we do find them too ("Tú y cuántos como tú", "El bosque", "La forma" or "Frágil") but we also are presented with grower songs such as "Después de todo", "Al final (todo arde)" or "La electricidad en el hueso". Plus, as usual, the indispensable song in Galician ("Todo o mundo protesta") and the album closer, a duet performed by Sara and singer Aldo Linares. "Hablaremos de miedo" features another great improvement - it features all sorts of wind, brass and string arrangements, which stress the epic tone of many of the songs and put Nadadora in the same league as bands such as The Delgados o Stars. Such new arrangements, which they plan to feature onstage, will surely enhance the already hymn-like characteristics of their live act, as proved in many of their succesful concerts such as FIB 2006, Contempopranea 2005, El Sol (Madrid) 2006 or La Fabrica de Chocolate (Vigo) 2006. The songs on "Hablaremos de miedo" were recorded at the Circulo Polar studio, situated in O Grove, Galicia, and were mastered in New York (West West Side Music) by Alan Douches, whose mastering jobs include the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Antony and the Johnsons, Galaxie 500, Beirut, Radio 4 or Damon & Naomi.

Paley, Tom
Beware Young Ladies! (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, SWEDEN New recordings from underground folk legend Tom Paley, with special guest Bert Deivert, recorded in Sweden in early 2006. Tom has been recordings since the 50s! Tom Paley was born and raised in NYC, where he first fell in love with old-time music. He began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and quickly excelled at both instruments. He briefly performed in a duo with the great folk musician Woody Guthrie in the late 50s. Later he helped form The New Lost City Ramblers, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen. This group inspired a greater mainstream interest in traditional music. The Ramblers considered their live concerts primarily as opportunities to share great old songs they had discovered with their fellow folk performers. After The Ramblers broke up Paley formed The Old Reliable String Band (with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose). Tom moved to Sweden, where he lived from 1963 to 1965, before moving to England where he has resided ever since. Tom continues to tour in America and Europe both solo and with other musicians.

Piano Magic
Part Monster (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US 7th "proper" album from esoteric Anglo-French, London-based "ghost-rock" group that ranges from brittle folkish introspection to dynamic all-out noise intensity. Produced by Guy Fixsen of Laika (engineer to the likes of My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, The Breeders, Stereolab). Part-Monster, Piano Magic's 7th "proper" album (excluding compilations) easily lives up to it's title. Though Piano Magic are generally tarred with the brushes of "ambient," "coldwave" or even "ghostrock," Part-Monster has it's fill of all-out, near brutal, dynamic intensity. Indeed, anyone who's witnessed PM live over the past 2 years or so will testify that the shadowy introspection of their records is camouflage for a beast of many teeth. Bringing in Guy Fixsen, of the group, Laika, as producer, clearly marked the band's intention for a rawer, more powerful sound. Fixsen has taken the production and/or engineer chair for such luminaries as The Pixies, Moonshake, The Breeders, Joy Zipper, Stereolab, Lush and most notably for My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. That's not to say that Piano Magic have entirely turned the amps up to 11. Part-Monster gracefully manages to balance this cathartic noise with romantic paeans to their favourite subject - the more cruel, tragic side of their home city, London and most notably tips a hat to perhaps the most graceful of it's outcasts, Joseph Carey Merrick (The Elephant Man). In this, the 10th year of their existence, Piano Magic can look back on a varied and accomplished discography most bands wouldn't manage in a lifetime of trying. Records for 4AD, Darla, Morr Music, Important and many more, mark their way, as well as the soundtrack to Bigas Luna's Son De Mar movie (2001) and performances at some of the biggest festivals in Europe (Benicassim, Primavera, BAM). Though based in London, Piano Magic is a living model of the Entente Cordiale - 3 of it's 5 members are French (6, if you include regular chanteuse, Angele). Even so, since it's conception, in 1996, the group has drunk heavily from the glass of British musical inspiration - most notably, The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, as well as the selective 80's output of 4AD, Factory and Rough Trade Records. Though they operate somewhat beneath the radar in a fashion-obsessed Britain, Piano Magic have amassed a huge, devout following in Europe and regularly tour the likes of France, Spain, Italy to sold-out halls. Though the group is their main obsession, singer Glen Johnson also maintains a solo project of leftfield electronica under the guise of Textile Ranch (album, Bird Heart In Wool, Very Friendly, 2005). Along with keyboard player, Cedric Pin, his Future Conditional project will release their debut album, We Don't Just Disappear on LTM Recordings this April - a label most notable for the re-issue of many Factory Records' "classic" albums.

Pikelet
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, AUSTRALIA Pikelet is Evelyn Morris, a 24 year old musical wunderkind from the outer suburbs of Melbourne who began life as a hardcoreobsessed drummer, and still currently serves on sticks in such heavy-hitting Melbourne institutions as Baseball and True Radical Miracle. But a couple of years ago, something tickled Evelyn's brain in a funny way and she felt compelled to grab an old accordion, a guitar and a delay pedal, and launch a decidedly un-hardcore solo career. The name comes from Evelyn's mother, who used to spoil her kids with pikelets when she was a little strapped for cash. "She always had eggs, she always had flour and powdered milk in the cupboard, so she would just throw together pikelets," Evelyn told Mess + Noise Magazine recently. "It was a really big deal for me, but I found out later that it was just what she did when she had nothing else." Engineered and produced by US uber-producer Casey Rice (Tortoise, Sea & Cake, Ben Lee and countless others), Pikelet's debut self-titled album is a gorgeous, multitiered work of swirling and shifting melody, layered harmonies and charming story-telling, almost entirely performed by Evelyn herself. All in all, Pikelet is a uniquely assured and distinctive debut.

Port Royal
Afraid To Dance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 17TH)
PS, UK The second album from the band who injected new life into the post-rock scene with their breathtaking debut "Flares" in 2005. For those unfamiliar with their debut, port-royal are anything but just another generic epic instrumental outfit; utilising subtle electronics and almost classical arrangements, they create lengthy, expansive, melancholic compositions that often have movements within the individual tracks, constantly evolving and shifting in tempo. Though "Afraid To Dance" follows the formula that made "Flares" such a success, it also displays sufficient progression to be more than just "Flares pt2"; though the same components are evident, the emphasis has shifted towards the electronic beats and pure rhythm that underpin their sound, bringing them to the forefront while the hypnotic spacerock guitars and synth gently weave melodies beneath. Full press push on what could be the biggest album on the label to date; journalists have been asking for promo copies ever since the release was listed on the Resonant website, so expect a wave of support. First UK tour dates to follow in the summer, with European dates being finalised now.

Redfearn, Alec & Eyesores
The Blind Spot (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Marvelous large ensemble from Providence, RI has been in existence for a decade now. This is their 6th release & their second for Cuneiform & is surprisingly different from The Quiet Room. It includes a few shorter songs but the main focus of the album is a very ambitious work entitled "I am the Resurrection & the Light", which is a song cycle for a large ensemble featuring a number of different players: appearing are accordion, violin, viola, French horn, guitar, alto sax, bassoon, contrabass, drums, 'loops, processing & other eletronic mayhem' & layers & layers of vocals from up to 4 vocalists (Alec & 3 female voices). This song cycle is a eulogy & meditation about drug addiction & death from drug addiction & related causes. A compelling, powerful, demanding & ultimately beautiful & moving work. No one else sounds like The Eyesores & with this album, no one combines such purity of vocal & instrumental work with such a sense of impending uneasiness & doom. Combines acid folk, maverick 20th century Americana (Tom Waits, Pauline Oliveros, Charles Ives, John Cage, Harry Partch), cabaret & theater music, hypnotic minimalism (Terry Riley & Phillip Glass) noise/drone rock, Eastern European folk music & much more. RIYL: Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, Espers, Fern Knight, Joanna Newsom, Ivo Papasov, Tom Waits. "A delight."-Copper Press

The Quicksand Memory EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US The Quicksand Memory EP features two brand spankin' new tracks. "Look At The Sky" opens the EP with a song that translates Ulrich's compositional vision with the unexpected help of a live band. It's a rare look behind the dense electronic layers that signifies Mr. Schnuass' sound. The 2nd track "Medusa" (Edit) is the EPs true gem whose full length twin will reside on the new album. "Medusa" is bold, big and beautiful, an almost painful tease of what's to come on his new album, Goodbye, due July 10th. Also includes Robin Guthrie's (Cocteau Twins) reworkings of two of Ulrich's most celebrated songs, "Gone Forever" and the stunning "On My Own."

PS, US Their 2nd studio album, 11 titles, along w/ the stellar cover of "Three Imaginary Boys," as approved by The Cure. This powerful, dark & moving new album from the Parisian duet succeeds in combining the sharp & energetic electro feel of their DJ sets w/ a robotic melancholy & a typical new wave romanticism. Played either on a dancefloor or in a lounge, this record has a vigorous & modern feel, easily outclassing the attempts of electroclash fusion of the beginning of the 2000s.

Shapes And Sizes
Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US "Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner" is proof that SHAPES AND SIZES aim to please the while not pandering. Imagine a soulful top 40 Thinking Fellers playing songs for the prom. Lyrically Split Lips is at once celebratory and derogatory; among other things, a peculiar but calculated meditation on naive nationalism and potent protest ("Victory in War, oh what a bore"). "High Life" focuses on benign habits turned scabrous, and "Alone/Alive" casts an existential strobe on freedom and dependence minus the pretension that usually comes along for that ride. Split Lip's harmonious discord is also technical: the band recorded with JC/DC Studios (Destroyer, New Pornographers, Tegan and Sara, etc.) and mixed with ASTHMATIC KITTY'S own RAFTER ROBERTS (Fiery Furnaces, The Rapture, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower) to forge a pristine decomposition. Don't try turning it down- the overdrive provides the framework for equally aggressive lyrics that combine sensuality, violence, and social critique.

Shriekback
Glory Bumps (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 11th)
PS, UK We're very proud to announce the arrival of Shriekback's eleventh album, and their second on Malicious Damage [following 2005's highly acclaimed Cormorant]. Glory Bumps is in many ways more recognisably the descendant of Shriekback's mid-80's 'alt-rock' classic Oil and Gold than any since. Anthems, hooligan choruses, big guitars, brass, a smattering of Psychobilly and, as usual, shed-loads of words. Glory Bumps has a curious tangential relationship with Barry Andrews' and Martyn Barker's recent improvised album Monstrance, a collaboration with XTC's Andy Partridge - Glory Bumps uses a number of loops created from the Monstrance album ['because they were there'] as well as Martyns' inimitable live drums and real-time guitar contributions from Andy. Barry co-produces with Stuart Rowe, who was one of the engineers from Monstrance. However there is no doubt that this is a Shriekback album 100% - as you will hear. Wendy Partridge who has sung backing vocals on every Shriekback album since 1986 features as does Barry's son Finn Andrews (of The Veils) who lends his intense vocals to the happy-clappy title track. The album's title is a reference to the goosebumps experienced by fundamentalist Christians when the amount of misery prevalent in the world presages, or so they believe, their abrupt assimilation into the bosom of their Lord although we suspect that, on the day of the Rapture, Shriekback will not be amongst them. PERSONNEL Barry Andrews: vocals, keyboards, Finn Andrews: backing vocals, Martyn Barker: drums and percussion, Andy Partridge: guitars, Catharine Shrubshall: brass and woodwind, Mark the Harp: blues harp, Ben Smith: Trombone, Stuart Rowe: guitars, Finn Wilkinson & Mia Griffiths: kids choir Produced by Barry Andrews & Stuart Rowe, Mixed & mastered by Stuart Rowe CD in embossed gold foil pack with lyric sheets tracklisting: Glory Bumps, The Bride Stripped Bare, Bittersweet, Hooray for Everything, Amaryllis in the Sprawl, Squanderer, Mahalia, Burying the Bunny, Yarg 7, Devils' Onions.

Speal, Shane
Stealing the Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US It could be a modern incarnation of the old blues scenario: A man sits in his single-wide mobile home with a primitive guitar & belts out mean murder ballads & dark spirituals through a rusty harmonica mic. But it's not a "scenario." This is the real shit. Speal was living in the middle of a Pennsylvania trailer park. He plays a cigar box guitar. And he recorded this album on a simple 4-track cassette recorder. "Stealing the Fire" features stark homemade recordings of Speal performing the works of Timothy Renner on a primitive cigar box guitar. It was a simple premis in the beginning. Speal just wanted to know what Renner's dark folk music would sound like if were soaked in Delta blues. Speal covers Renner's work from Stone Breath, Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Jamboree & solo recordings.

Swift, Richard
Kisses For The Misses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US This is the debut single from RICHARD SWIFT'S new full-length "Dressed Up For the Letdown" for which MOJO had the following to say: "FOUR STARS. It's not stringently retro, more a Tin Pan Alley of the Imagination." The A-side is pure Swift - a piano-driven pop tune sung with the moxie of a wizened songsmith. "So come on, love, nobody wants to see you cry," he sings. "All of your heartbreak has been sung." It's three minutes of wonder that takes you back thirty-five years to a classic era of smart L.A. pop music. Which makes the B-side so interesting, as it's Swift's sublime take on Prince's "Paisley Park" that jumps ahead a generation to cover the Purple One's late-80s under-appreciated gem. The second offering on the two-tune B-side is an ethereal tumbleweed of a number called "Cowboy Song #6". A Swift-penned out-take from the Dressed Up sessions, "Cowboy Song #6" finds Swift strumming his guitar, waiting for his train to come in, in whatever fashion it may take.

Text Adventure
I Believe in Lassies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
What must be a crippling disability for David and Stephen, is a blessing for the rest of us, as we get treated to 10 tracks bursting with the self-confidence that can only come from living in hope. Lines like "I'll be the scarf around your neck" (If It Could Talk It Wouldn't Say Anything) make you gaze up from your shoes and focus instead on your breaking heart. This yearning wistfulness can be traced through a number of influences; from James Taylor and Nick Drake, through to Ariel M and Jim O Rourke. The record also pushes the line between analogue and digital instruments just a little bit further. Are the bleeps at the end of Pink Smoke, forged through Logic or a circuit bent keyboard? Is that a harmonium or a sine wave on If It Could Talk It Wouldn't Say Anything? Is that a fast flowing stream or a microphone left on in a pocket. Really good records speak their own language, and ask you to investigate them to understand. And so it is with IBIL: complex textures and simple melodies conspiring to make it at once disarming and compelling. It's music inspired by accidents, by finding beauty in the unintentional, the 'wyrd' in the everyday. David states his inspiration as "Whenever I hear something natural that has gone wrong or has been digitally manipulated. Like an old field recording of some birds or rain that has been distorted." Text Adventure is perfect pop, with a post rock sensibility: Gorgeous acoustic guitar lines hang hammocked in the mix between crackling static like an electronic rainstorm. The tracks come on like a series of commands strung together to create a whole gaming experience. Take Boobook (For R) which opens with three minutes of bossa guitar worthy of Eureka era Jim O Rourke before even a sniff of a lyric. Or Nothing is Wrong (Nothing is wrong) whose Mice Parade-esque guitar line warps into a digital portrait of the wintertime before bursting back again into full summer.

This album is dark, intimate, melancholic and cloudy, but every now and then there are rays ofsunshine coming through the clouds, riding sunny melodic breezes. SLOWDIVE and THE CURE are still good references for this music, but they are toolimited to describe the unique sound of TREMBLING BLUE STARS, a sound that'sready to mingle melodic, sensitive pop with many electronic sounds, distortions, noises, static and even field recordings that envelope thesongs with a nostalgic halo. On one song, percussion is provided byfootsteps on dry branches and shingles, and on another song a recording of dawn on the Romney Marsh provides the backdrop. THE RAIN PARADE, MAZZY STAR and GALAXIE 500 come up here and there: on this album there's folk, andthere's electronica and 80's influences and avant country and, of course, there's the best pop music you can hear. Sky Line Part 2 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Detroit & Ibiza have had a profound effect on the music played at the Belgian club SKY LINE, & it is clearly apparent on this compilation. Early scene for New Wave, New Beat, pre-Acid House, this collection catches the vibe of that eras dance floor flavor. Minimal rock, primitive industrial beats, atmospherics, & electro tracks segue together w/ fluidity, sounding like a DJ warm up set list from a DFA, Gang Of Four, or LCD Soundsystem gig.

Thank You For Being You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 17TH)
PS, US A compilation of scottish independent labels - 1980 - present. Electric Honey, the label set up by students at Glasgow's Stow College, are set to release a unique compilation of tracks from Scottish Independent labels from 1980 to present on the 12th of May 2007. Featuring twelve tracks from the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub, Josef K, Fire Engines, Future Pilot AKA and relative new comers How To Swim, this compilation hopes to highlight the wealth and diversity of Scottish independent labels that have supported and nurtured the Scottish underground scene from 1980 to 2000 approx. From the first flourishes of post-punk activity from the legendary Postcard and Fast Product/Pop Aural labels, through to the present with labels as diverse as Chemikal Underground and Geographic, Scottish independents continue to receive international recognition. Belle & Sebastian came to public prominence with the release of their debut album, 'Tigermilk', released in 1996 on Stow College's Electric Honey label. 1,000 of the album were cut, with the vinyl - only release selling out before being deleted. This led to a bidding frenzy on internet auction-sites, with one American fan paying $1,200 Dollars for a copy On the back of the Electric Honey release, Belle & Sebastian were signed to Jeepster Records and their 2nd album, "If You're Feeling Sinister", cemented their critical reputation and proved to be a commercial success. Further albums on Jeepster resulted in the group building a massive international following, before singing to legendary London independent label Rough Trade for their 2003 album, "Dear Catastrophe Waitress".Students on Glasgow's Stow College HND Music Business course are involved with three labels; Electric Honey, Gdansk, and Root8. Through their involvement, students gain invaluable knowledge and experience of the machinations of the music industry, covering all aspects from legal, artistic, to promotion. Tutored by Douglas MacIntyre, head of the Creeping Bent Organisation, itself an influential independent label over the last ten years, the course covers many grounds...culturally, musically and socially and thus Electric Honey is probably (almost certainly) the most successful College label in the world. Tracklisting: 1. Belle & Sebastian - 'She's Losing It' (Electric Honey) 2. Teenage Fanclub - 'Fallen Leaves' (Pema) 3. Josef K - 'It's Kinda Funny' (Postcard circa 1980) 4. King Creosote - 'King Bubbles In Sand' (Fence) 5. The Delgados - 'Monica Webster' (Chemikal Underground) 6. Fire Engines - 'Get Up & Use Me' (Codex / Fast / Pop Aural) 7. The Pastels - 'The Viaduct' (Domino/Geographic) 8. Frank Blake - 'Any Way The Wind Blows' (Shoeshine) 9. The Nectarine No9 - 'Saint Jack ' (Postcard circa 1995) 10. Future Pilot AKA - 'Eyes of Love' (Creeping Bent) 11. Bill Wells Trio - 'Singleton' (Geographic) 12. How To Swim - 'Logical Man' (Electric Honey)

Viarsosa
Where The Killers Run (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, UK Hailing from the UK, led by singer-songwriter Richard Neuberg with Josh Hillman on violin & viola (Willard Grant Conspiracy); Nick Simms on drums (Cornershop); Rob McHardy on guitars, lap steel, banjo & mandolin; Mick Young on stand-up & electric bass, and Emma Seal singing backing vocals. The full studio album brings us more extraordinary tales from this unique band, many of the songs crafted as if they belonged to some distant mediaeval past. Neuberg's songs tell of 'canons calling', of 'poor men praying', of 'kings & princes hanging out the dead'. They are mythic ballads- stories of sin & salvation, of persecution & redemption- into which Richard manages to weave his own difficult life stories. Layers of mandolins, banjos, violins & musical saws all accompany Richard's deep & powerful lead vocals that have brought comparisons to Nick Cave, Jim Morrison & Leonard Cohen, amongst others. Extended bonus material only available on US release!

Vietnam
EP #1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US THE SOCIAL REGISTRY are pleased to present the first of three limited edition twelve inch EPs from VIETNAM. Each of the three features a track from the band's self-titled full-length (released on KEMADO), along with tracks recorded recently at the band's Freedom School Compound, a store-front apartment/studio that the band shares with producer Matt Boyton in Brooklyn, NY. These recordings capture the band cutting loose, writing and recording at their will, and form a perfect counterpoint to their professionally recorded full-length.

Voxtrot
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US It's refreshing to find a band that's not terribly worried about being the next big thing. Over the five years of their existence, Voxtrot have released fewer than twenty songs spread across two hard to find 7-inch singles and three EPs. And it's on the strength of those literate, memorable songs, plus a series of increasingly tight and vibrant live shows, that they've built a devoted and passionate following. The twelve songs on this record are a powerful statement of intent: louder, harder, a little more complex, a more confident Voxtrot. "...a Texas band who could nudge the heights of soulful UK indie poppers like Aztec Camera and the Beautiful South" - Spin. "Voxtrot write whip-smart pop rock" - Pitchfork.

Wagoner, Porter
Wagonmaster (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US Wagoner is a true legend. He kicked out hard-hitting honky-tonk anthems in the 50s, pioneered music television with the long-running "Porter Wagoner Show" (1960-1980), influenced everyone from Johnny Cash and Dwight Yoakam to The Byrds and Gram Parsons, recorded seminal concept albums in the 70s, populated with the lonely, addicted, and mentally ill, and captured the imagination of nascent punks like Alex Chilton. Last year, Marty Stuart - longtime Johnny Cash sideman and torchbearer of traditional country music - approached Wagoner with an unrecorded Cash song written for Porter called "Committed To Parkview". Porter and Marty built an album around the song, revisiting the classic feel of his chilling concept albums, interwoven with barroom honky-tonk. The result is a record of raw beauty.

Wheat
Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Memory plays a crucial role in the music of WHEAT, one of the most enigmatic and compelling rock bands of the past decade. And never more profoundly has the theme, the *act*, of remembering played so critical a role in the making of that music than on the Massachusetts outfit's stunning new EMPYREAN RECORDS CD, "Everyday I Said A Prayer For Kathy And Made A One Inch Square." Even the album's cryptic title, drummer Brendan Harney explains, is "about remembering through a ritual. We lose things we love, sometimes, in life. People turn corners and things change ... Then we decide to make a square, simply to remember - or hope, maybe." Wheat's fourth full-length album, and the core of the band itself, is about all of those things.

White Rabbits
Fort NIghtly (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US With a certain joie de vive, playfulness & charm, this 6 piece thematically evoke the more decadent & bygone era of the Gatsby's, days spent on the green, old cinemas, tragic mothers & restrained, but no less awkward domestic disputes. Interweaving guitar lines & punchy rhythms are their penchant for more topical excursions, at times reminiscent of The Specials

XXL (Xiu Xiu Larson)
Spicchiology? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, US Spicchiology? is the sophomore release from the supergroup XXL comprising all members of Xiu Xiu and Larsen. Recorded in late 2006 in Torino Italy Spicchiologi? is the result of a profoundly creative friendship translated into music and spanning the globe."It is hard as an American, if of a somewhat borish, middle class suburban, albeit freakishly desperate artistically inclined background, to really present without being excessively prosaic as to what it could mean to have, for the second time in ones life, two weeks to spend in a sublime foreign city with the only premeditated task at hand being, with good friends, to make a record about sadness and violence and history. Well prosacism cannot be denied, it was, by God, in Italy. Blood Oranges, the wrapper of being spicchio. The concerted study of being Spicchiology?. As I type this I am watching an Italian film about terrosism in Italy in the late 1970s. I did not know anything about this time until the men of Larsen told Caralee and me about it over wine. Now in America it is all that Washington says: terror. But they already knew and were ready to push past and through it again, holding our historyless hands. Everyday before recording we walked by a tower that in the1300's the town executioner occupied and the bones of the people he was paid with taxes to behead were buried around it. The Oakland police department? Please! Warehouse shows? Barf! The souls of unbaptised infants live in the black painted and burned cathedral cum gallery where one of the three XXL guitarist curates art music shows. Not to say that Europe knows all but it has hurt itself for 2000 years and in America we have only just begun. If the last XXL record was romanitc and fun, this one is broken and superior. Look at yourself! Your matress is embarassed that you give it a job. The farfisa is a real one, not a sampler. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!" -James Stewart of XXL (and Xiu Xiu) February 2007.
