Parasol New Arrivals • June 12, 2007

Howdy friends,

Thanks for meeting us back here on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon. Did I happen to mention that I was lucky enough to catch Dinosaur Jr. in Chicago last week? Let me tell you that they are just as loud as they were back in the day (in the best way possible). Other than that, things have been kind of slow here, in Urbana. The students are gone and we’re gearing up for a much needed lazy summer.

We here, at Parasol are absolutely, positively in awe of the new Arthur & Yu album titled “In Camera” on Sub Pop’s new imprint, Hardly Art. This disc will be available next Tuesday so make sure to get your pre-orders in pronto. Seriously, this record has been put on house arrest by us Parasolians and it doesn’t look like good ol’ Arthur & Yu will be a getting a "Get Out of Jail Free" card any time soon.

All right, take a peek at the great new releases below and drop us an electronic letter or get one of us on the horn if anything tickles your fancy.

Until then,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Arthur & Yu " In Camera" CD $11.50 (Hardly Art)
This is the debut album from Seattle duo Grant Olsen and former Rogue Wave bassist Sonya Westcott, and right now we're calling this the sweetest psych-folk, dream-pop release of the year. It's Laurel Canyon bohemia, baby! Beards and fringe jackets, beads and bongs, Joni Mitchell & Graham Nash, Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra, Gram & Emmylou... Luminous and hazy and seemingly of another age. The Age of Aquarius perhaps, or thereabouts. Yet where there's sunshine there are shadows and Arthur & Yu's darkness is all about The Velvet Underground, at their most mantric and magnificent.

Jim's Scandinavian Pick of the Week

Elope "9 Distilled Dreams" CD ON SALE: $10.50 (Gravitation)
Long-awated new album from one of Parasol's fave Swedish acts! Rock trio Elope’s 9 Distilled Dreams and their previous effort, 3WD, were recorded during the same marathon sessions, but released over two albums, songs split between rockin' and mello'. 3WD made no bones about rocking out Crazy Horse style, while long-awaited and chiefly acoustic companion piece, 9DD, explores Elope’s dreamy side, their hazy mellowosity, and as it happens could be the best album of their career. Whereas their 2004 debut, The No Name Record, stirred Cream, Badfinger, and The Beatles into their steamrolling stoner melodicism; and 2005's 3WD offered throwback, electrified prog(gier)-rock majesties; here within the misty-eyed classic rock escapism and circumspect psychedelia of 9 Distilled Dreams you'll find straight-up references to Big Star, Pink Floyd, the mellowest Neil Young, and even CSNY... Totally dreamy, and don't let the wintry cover art worry you, this is Summer in a bottle. Check out sound samples on the front page and more about the band posted later this week on my Nordic music page, where I stack up the best Scandi gear each week (or so).

Aroah
El Dia Despues
PS, SPAIN Aroah's much anticipated third studio long player, El día después, brings ten songs sung in Spanish where sincerity lays next to hope: smart, moving, stylistic and melancholic folk pop music that's often orchestral yet intimate. El día después is a record of an intense, harsh reflection. Produced by Raül Fernandez (Refree), who also helped Irene crafting the acoustic and inspired atmosphere of "En el patio interior", an EP released about two years ago. In this new album, Irene's voice sounds new and clean. She now sings every line in Spanish (except for some words in English and French), surmounting all the shyness she has suffered from since she started writing lyrics. Not far from Ida, Mary Timony or Lisa Germano (she has even been called "a Catpower you can relate to"), Irene now turns what used to be folk raised in an American hotbed into a sincere and moving and (often) orchestral pop. We either have to point out El día después is nearly a rupture with Aroah's first two records, or just mention she has chosen to take a new and adventurous path. Irene reveals all of her poetry, talent, humor and shy optimism throughout its 29 minutes. Aroah has grown older, wiser. All of her thoughts evolve in this touching album of beautiful simplicity.

PS, US The musical experiment known 1st came about when skateboard magazine Slap organized a tour in the summer of '02 for RAY BARBEE, TOMMY GUERRERO & MATT RODRIGUEZ, 3 accomplished skateboarders ever who also happen to love making music. The results of all these improvised collaborations are 8 stunning & infectious numbers that owe as much to California's cool jazz of the 50s as to San Francisco's latin soul scene of the early 70s.

Bongos, The
Drums Along the Hudson [special edition, bonus tracks]
PS, US A Parasol fave from the wayback machine... Spectacular 1982 album (actually a collection of an EP and singles, who knew?) from Richard Barone-led pop outfit The Bongos. The original album's 15 songs are augmented with 12 bonus tracks including a new recording of "Bulrushes", produced by Moby.
ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Irresistible guitar pop."TIME OUT NY: "The Bongos' 1982 debut is one of the best albums to come out of the NYC area during the fertile, shadowy period between punk and new wave. A pitch-perfect mediation of the nervy energy of fellow Hobokenites the Feelies and the jangly guitars that R.E.M. would soon make famous, Drums Along the Hudson's concise songs and terse, cryptic lyrics sound just as fresh today. At least eight of the record's 15 insanely catchy songs (including the one that's 29 seconds long) would totally weaponize a mix-tape."

Colour Kane
A Taste Of Colour Kane
PS, BELGIUM Colour Kane are a new breed of dream popsters, with cascading guitars and sweet soaring vocals propelled by driving bass and electronic beats. Where so much dream pop is described through aesthetic alone, Colour Kane's music draws a wonderful arc between melancholy and bliss. The band developed from the seeds of trip pop project Abricot, comprising Belgian music scene veterans Bruno Kimpe and Joeri Gydé. The pair teamed up with vocalist Marjan Snykers and Colour Kane was borne. The band found ex-Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie, who offered his support, ultimately leading to the band supporting Robin during his Lumière shows in Belgium in addition to the remixed track "Seaside Dream", also found on "A Taste Of".

Cooper
Guárdame Un Secreto
PS, SPAIN Add this to the list of COOPER's brilliant singles. Four songs that follow up from the previous one from the very cover, with Catherine Deneuve starring again, and introducing the band's new drummer, Nacho García (WINNERYS). "Canción de viernes" opens the EP with the classic COOPER sound, self-referencing their own repertoire as in songs like "Vértigo" or "Nudo en la garganta" (in fact the repetition of words from these songs is absolutely conscious). "Diario" is about emotional instability -a secret to keep, hidden from the rest-, in a power pop style. "Steph" is a precious song, poetic and very moving, with a different sound to the band's previous efforts: as if SHAZAM would play a BEATLES song with Evan Dando. If anything. The last song (the last one?), "Flea market", is a comeback to Alex's anglophile roots, a danceable instrumental number lead by Carlo Coupé's marvelous organ. With this guest musician COOPER travel to places where they could meet THE SMALL FACES, JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET or, of course, Alex's previous band LOS FLECHAZOS.

Datarock
Datarock Datarock
PS, US Stateside debut for Norwegian dance-rock duo (with connections to Annie), think Talking Heads, Sparks, gay disco, Scissor Sisters, +/-, Happy Mondays... Their first full-length CD takes the feel-good vibe of their debut single, the Grease-inspired "Computer Camp Love", and turns it up to 11. Blasting a power chord of throwback nostalgia that'll knock you straight out of your Reebok Pumps. Love letters to Laurie Anderson ("Laurie") and references to Close Encounters of the Third Kind ("Princess") are just the tip of the iceberg. The album's infectious first single, "Fa Fa Fa," pairs up dance-rock drums with funk-strummed guitars and a chorus that'll have you jonesing for the nearest copy of Talking Heads' 77...

Stay Close
PS, US Joel Thibodeaus work as both a solo artist & band leader. His music, captured on the resplendent record, is an eloquent distillation of a life's tales. Founding member, songwriter and performer of the group String Builder. He captures the surreal & the sublime in wondrous song. The daringly melodic plucking of strings & the odd tempo changes provide expertly unexpected accompaniment. Elizabeth
First Excommunications
PS, CANADA Something about this Vancouver, B.C. quartet's unabashed embrace of great English songwriting and vocal rejection of the trendy trappings of contemporary indie dogma (read: whiny vocals and chintzy synths) raises the ire of the self-appointed keepers of cool. On First Excommunications, the band effectively dispatches the naysayers, dispenses with simplistic comparisons and fulfills the promise of their 2004 Blick EP with 11 sharp tracks that transcend the influences and flat out rock. The band's kinetic sound and take-no-prisoners live show has placed them on-stage alongside the likes of The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Metric, and TV on the Radio. They have also been invited on tours with Hot Hot Heat, Death From Above 1979 and Controller.Controller. The buzz on Elizabeth reached a crescendo in 2006, when the band's performance at New Music West earned them the title of "Best of the Fest" from CBC Radio 3. "I've said it before and I'll say it again: Elizabeth are a wicked band." - ChartAttack.

Green Milk From The Planet Orange
City Calls Revolution
PS, US Produced, engineered and mixed by Paul Mahajan. Got Green Milk? From across a veiled and ashen cosmos, well, from across the Sea Of Japan anyways; from the Planet Orange, hidden somewhere in the bosom of Nippon, gushes forth a froth of Green Milk. Fleeing is for naught, because City Calls Revolution is an eruption of Vesuvian intensity, and the Milk flow flash and searing, thick with Magma, scorching beast and building in its glowering wake. It's time to get psyched about psych again! If GMFTPO's first was its ersatz Future Days, then City Calls Revolution is its angry Yeti.

Her Space Holiday
Let's Get Quiet, Vol. 2 EP
PS, US Her Space Holiday returns with the instrumental EP, Let's Get Quiet Vol 2. Opener "OSAF" harkens back to the electro-infused beats of hip-hop's early days. "Wrapped in Plastic" is classic Her Space Holiday: intricate string flourishes, intriguing breakdowns, and melodic refrains over electronic drums. On "Panda Strikes," Arabesque synth lines weave through thick bass lines and dance floor ready drumbeats. The EP's closer, "Wishbone," is all lulling tropicalia, as dense string arrangements and lush melodies float over dreamy production. Let's Get Quiet, Vol. 2 is a collection that displays styles from Her Space Holiday's musical palette not explored on his more traditional releases and a wonderful addition to the Her Space Holiday catalog.

LD & The New Criticism
Amoral Certitudes
PS, SPAIN The latest offering from New York's tuneful, eclectic LD & the New Criticism is a delightful morsel of pop yumminess-a musical amuse-bouche sure to linger in your ear as it momentarily satisfies your hunger... yet still leaving you wanting more. Created as a musical bridge between TRAGIC REALISM, the band's critically-acclaimed 2005 debut, and a new full-length collection the band are currently constructing, AMORAL CERTITUDES is a brief survey of crimes of the heart that has one elegantly-shod foot planted firmly in the fetid grave of romance, and the other in the giddy, arnivalesque Tunnel of Love. LD BEGHTOL's playful lyrics sing of the unabashed humor and pathos of human amatory relations, even as the swirling musical accompaniment entices you inward and onward to your doom. This release includes an enchanting cover of Lisa Germano's "If I Think of Love."

Love Supreme
Elsewhere
PS, UK Love Supreme is Italian production team Sapo and DJs Nick Sarno and Roberto Di Movi. Elsewhere showcases their ability to combine influences from Moroder-style disco to Detroit techno to Krautrock and psychedelia. "Elsewhere" begins with an epic intro reminiscent of Carl Craig before the kick-drum drops and brings with it a stripped-back Italo groove. "The Polly Variation" is big room electronic disco at its finest - all the dials turned up to 11. Finally, "Splash Monkey" is a loose, wonky, psychedelic groover that is clinically proven to make people dance like a monkey that's fallen into a vat of custard.

Marhaug, Lasse
Alive
PS, US Working within the fields of noise music for over 15 years, Marhaug has toured most parts of the world, both as a solo artist & as a member of the project JAZZKAMER. Lasse keeps on paying homage to his metal roots (this time Kiss` classic Alive). A selection of live recordings done all over the world in the period of 1998 to 2006. This live album features recordings done among others in Toronto, Bergen, Chicago, New York, Oslo, Baltimore & more. In many ways this is a travel letter from Lasse Marhaug to you! A travel letter in noise. Its starts out with a special piece that Lasse made for the Alarm Award (Norwegian grammy award). He was told by the label to "make ears bleed". Lasse succeeded, he made shockwaves through the audience that was dressed for party & easy listening, and he probably did one of his hardest & most violent tracks ever. This CD documents almost 10 years with noise, and it shows the development in today's noise scene as well as it documents the development of an artist that is today regarded as one of the most respected noise musicians & huge influence of todays noise scene.

Moxham, Stuart & Louis Philippe
The Huddle House
PS, UK 'It's been a while', says Stuart. Indeed it has. Ten years, to be exact. But if The Huddle House's gestation was a long one - the birth itself was as natural and pain-free as could be hoped for. That so many years went by between the very first recording dates at Ken Brake's then fledgling studio (a live take of the title song's arrangement for two guitars) and the final mastering session was due to personal uprooting, multiple commitments, musical or otherwise, conflicting schedules, and the difficulty - in those pre ProTools days - of getting the whole team in one place at one given time. But there is nothing that sounds 'difficult', or forced, in The Huddle House, a collection of songs that will strike the listener by the freshness of the writing ('Stu's best, and by a distance, since Colossal Youth', says Louis, who's worked with Stuart since Random Rules, released in 1993), the spontaneity of the performances and the richness of their sound. It helped that much of this material was also performed live on a number of occasions (in Paris, London, Vienna and New York) before Ken Brake saved the final mixes to disc. As Stuart explains in his liner notes, his songs are written 'like diagrams; short, cryptic exercises, spare and sparing' - all Young Marble Giants and Gist! Fans will be aware of that. But The Huddle House cannot be called 'austere', even if the instrumental canvas is one of utmost simplicity: most of the time, a couple of guitars, a couple of voices, and that is about all, barring a splash of color, a burst of vocal harmonies, a sprinkling of percussion ... Louis: 'I hope that this album will establish once and for all that Stuart is one of this country's best writers, period. Some of the lyrics hit me today with the same strength as they did when I first heard them - 'Save It', for example, or 'Hold My Hand', which is simply heartbreaking. 'The Huddle House' is as evocative as a painting by Edward Hopper... and the tunes are glorious. 'Save It', again - a three-chord wonder, melodically speaking. I am as proud of being on this record as I am of anything else I've done before'. Credits: All songs written by Stuart Moxham, co-arranged by Louis Philippe. Stuart Moxham: lead vocals, steel string and electric guitar, electric bass, keyboards, percussion; Louis Philippe: backing vocals, classical and electric guitar, electric bass; Andrew Moxham: hi-hats on 'Desert Rain'. Produced by Ken Brake at Regal Lane Studio, Regent's Park, London. Artwork designed by Simon Josebury for Secondary Modern, London.

Nadadora
Hablaremos Del Miedo
PS, US Nadadora's second album is bound to establish them as one of the most important bands in the Spanish independent scene. Their career has been on the up from the beginning, and after two records (mini CD "Aventuras dentro de cajas", 2004, and "Todo el frío del mundo", 2005) their popularity has grown enormously among fans. The 10 songs in "Hablaremos del miedo" will no doubt confirm all the expectations. In their new album Nadadora have managed to refine their style - the songs sound more sparkling and the emotions are more intensely transmitted. The solid foundation of the guitars is still present, as are the breathtaking beat changes which have made this band so singular. Among all this we find melancholy and tranquil moments in which Sara and Gonzalo's vocals duet masterfully. The result is a record with sharpness and balance, two characteristics which give the listener a broader perception of Gonzalo Abalo's new compositions and a better understanding of the band's spirit. A more mature set of lyrics completes this brilliant picture. "Hablaremos de miedo" is the band's most ambitious take on the various paths of pop and rock and the way they handle them to sculpt their very own sound. Variety is one of the staples of this record, and the band show their improving skills in songwriting, as they move further away from the formula of previous installments: instead of the usual bunch of hit-singles that made up the backbone of their past records, on "Hablaremos de miedo" we do find them too ("Tú y cuántos como tú", "El bosque", "La forma" or "Frágil") but we also are presented with grower songs such as "Después de todo", "Al final (todo arde)" or "La electricidad en el hueso". Plus, as usual, the indispensable song in Galician ("Todo o mundo protesta") and the album closer, a duet performed by Sara and singer Aldo Linares. "Hablaremos de miedo" features another great improvement - it features all sorts of wind, brass and string arrangements, which stress the epic tone of many of the songs and put Nadadora in the same league as bands such as The Delgados o Stars. Such new arrangements, which they plan to feature onstage, will surely enhance the already hymn-like characteristics of their live act, as proved in many of their succesful concerts such as FIB 2006, Contempopranea 2005, El Sol (Madrid) 2006 or La Fabrica de Chocolate (Vigo) 2006. The songs on "Hablaremos de miedo" were recorded at the Circulo Polar studio, situated in O Grove, Galicia, and were mastered in New York (West West Side Music) by Alan Douches, whose mastering jobs include the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Antony and the Johnsons, Galaxie 500, Beirut, Radio 4 or Damon & Naomi.

PS, US There's a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains & broken cymbals. Five guys howling & stomping, it's an anachronistic jug band party in a junkyard with sing-along hooks & weathered vocals from another time. And they make people dance. At a rock show in NYC no less! Part southern gothic spiritual, part moonshine fueled hoedown, these recordings, now presented with new remixes done by the band are a timeless addition to the canon of weird old America. It's an infections sound; unique & wonderfully raw, but with the power to pull in even the most jaded music fanatic

Philippe, Louis
Live
PS, UK Hardly any live performances of Louis have been committed to disc over the two decades of his career, an exception being a version of 'Domenica' featured on Trattoria's luxurious 'No. 100' commemoration box-set. And as he's never been the world's most intensive gigger, many fans have very little idea of how his 'baroque pop' can sound in a concert hall or a club environment. This double-album provides as faithful a picture as could be hoped of what most of them have missed over the years. Recorded two years ago in Bremen and London (together with a couple of tracks taken from an earlier, and noisier gig at the Spitz, London), this collection shows Louis' delicate songs (as well as some Francis Poulenc mélodies, and superb covers of Brian Wilson's 'I Wasn't Made for these Times' and Paddy McAloon's sublime 'Nightingales') in a quasi-chamber setting, accompanied by the piano and double-bass of Danny Manners, as well as the guitar and the flute of David Longdon in the case of the 'Bush Hall' disc. Three performances in total were (beautifully) recorded, out of which this selection was made, which covers songs written by Louis from his él days to his then latest album, 'The Wonder of it all'. As luck had it, these three performances, judging by fans' reactions, and Louis' own assessment, were among the very best he'd ever given.

Philippe, Louis
An Unknown Spring
PS, UK This is how Louis himself explains the birth of An Unknown Spring: 'even when we were still finishing The Wonder Of It All, I was starting to write down ideas for what I knew would be a completely different record, which would be a departure from my usual 'style' - my Brill Building ethos, if you will. Songs that would be part pop-songs, part lieder in their structure...more linear, with a different feel for form, more adventurous - because that was how the melodies were already taking shape in my head. So, for two years, I built up a number of songs on paper - about thirty in total, though it could be more than that. But I needed a catalyst to kick off the recording process, and that proved to be my work as a string arranger for The Clientele - for their new record, God Save The Clientele, which has just been released on Merge. I realised how much I was missing the studio environment - and working with Ken; I also realised I was ready. At the beginning, last January, the idea was still to record demos...but as things were going so well, it all sprang up quite organically... it just felt natural. I can't remember having ever felt so relaxed and, after a while, so confident that this might just prove a little bit special'. And different too. In what way? 'We've left some grit in there', Louis says. 'We haven't 'sweetened' anything as we might have done before. You can hear the string section taking a deep breath before playing the first notes of their parts on Walking on Air, the bass buzzing madly on The Hill and The Valley, all these details that we'd have sacrificed on another record. And I believe there is more of a sense of contrast within the songs, despite the fact that most of them are very short. I tried to avoid gratuitous repetition of themes and motifs. I let myself be myself far more than I've ever done, with the exception of Appointment with Venus. The orchestration is far richer than anything I've done since Azure - but also more exposed, at times reduced to a voice and a piano. Miss Lake is a good example of what I've tried to achieve - for three minutes or so, the melodic line grows and grows without repeating itself - until a recapitulation of the very first theme closes the song. What pleases me the most about this is not that I overcame a 'challenge' - but that it just felt so obviously right, so relaxed...I must also add that one tremendously important factor was the presence of Alasdair and Mel of The Clientele - again - whose voices blend beautifully with mine, and that I was incredibly lucky to meet Mari Persen, purely by chance as it were. I just love her voice, her playing, and her attitude to music-making...It's as if I'd found a new youth in myself, thanks to others. I'd never thought of it like this before - but that is the certainly one of the meanings of the album's title, An Unknown Spring.'

Shriekback
Glory Bumps
PS, UK We're very proud to announce the arrival of Shriekback's eleventh album, and their second on Malicious Damage [following 2005's highly acclaimed Cormorant]. Glory Bumps is in many ways more recognisably the descendant of Shriekback's mid-80's 'alt-rock' classic Oil and Gold than any since. Anthems, hooligan choruses, big guitars, brass, a smattering of Psychobilly and, as usual, shed-loads of words. Glory Bumps has a curious tangential relationship with Barry Andrews' and Martyn Barker's recent improvised album Monstrance, a collaboration with XTC's Andy Partridge - Glory Bumps uses a number of loops created from the Monstrance album ['because they were there'] as well as Martyns' inimitable live drums and real-time guitar contributions from Andy. Barry co-produces with Stuart Rowe, who was one of the engineers from Monstrance. However there is no doubt that this is a Shriekback album 100% - as you will hear. Wendy Partridge who has sung backing vocals on every Shriekback album since 1986 features as does Barry's son Finn Andrews (of The Veils) who lends his intense vocals to the happy-clappy title track. The album's title is a reference to the goosebumps experienced by fundamentalist Christians when the amount of misery prevalent in the world presages, or so they believe, their abrupt assimilation into the bosom of their Lord although we suspect that, on the day of the Rapture, Shriekback will not be amongst them. PERSONNEL Barry Andrews: vocals, keyboards, Finn Andrews: backing vocals, Martyn Barker: drums and percussion, Andy Partridge: guitars, Catharine Shrubshall: brass and woodwind, Mark the Harp: blues harp, Ben Smith: Trombone, Stuart Rowe: guitars, Finn Wilkinson & Mia Griffiths: kids choir Produced by Barry Andrews & Stuart Rowe, Mixed & mastered by Stuart Rowe CD in embossed gold foil pack with lyric sheets tracklisting: Glory Bumps, The Bride Stripped Bare, Bittersweet, Hooray for Everything, Amaryllis in the Sprawl, Squanderer, Mahalia, Burying the Bunny, Yarg 7, Devils' Onions.

Thee, Stranded Horse
Churning Strides
PS, UK Outstanding debut album from France's Thee, Stranded Horse. Churning Strides is an album that draws you in slowly and then leads you out into a head-space uniquely its own. The work of singer, songwriter and Normandy resident, Yann Tambour, this is a suite of songs that gleams like the moon on water and follows impulses that work like tides, slowly but irresistibly. Playing acoustic guitar and kora - simultaneously in the case of 'Tainted Days' - Tambour has a crafted sound that slips and slides from place to place, feeling to feeling. The music of sub-Saharan Africa - Delta blues - French chanson - the lyrical anarchism of Leo Ferre - the precision and unexpected melodic angles of Joanna Newsom's arpeggios - the cosmic folk of Marc Bolan's Tyrannosaurus Rex. All of these may come to mind at different points of Churning Strides. None are the key to Thee, Stranded Horse: this is Yann's voice and his lyrics - written mostly in his fluent English - their stops, starts and restless shifts from image to sound image. Yann Tambour has previously made music as the founder and orchestrator of Encre, an outfit which made use of samples, guitars (electric and acoustic), as well as other live instruments and his own unmistakable voice. Encre's two albums, Encre (2001) and Flux (2004), were released in France to great acclaim by Clapping Music, but Yann made a clean break in 2006, exploring the kora, moving to the Normandy countryside and dreaming up the acoustic reveries and voices of Thee, Stranded Horse.

Famous When Dead V
PS, GERMANY Playhouse continues its legendary and notorious compilation series named Famous When Dead with its fifth edition. Conceived to collect and present the label's 12" highlights, this time it features some unreleased rarities by the likes of Isolée, My My and new arrivals Einzelkind and Simon Baker, plus the biggest and most inspiring hits since the last volume. This is a real gem in the 13-year history of one of Germany's most style-shaping and capricious labels and a listening pleasure, par excellence. It starts with Rework's latest 12" title track "Love Love Love Yeah," and then takes one half of Smash TV, adds Dave DK, mixes it well, and you have a haunting, post-LFO house track with "Mono Rain." Einzelkind presents the A-side from their debut for Playhouse, "Spam Bot" and Alter Ego's Roman Flügel is represented twice on this compilation - like Rework - for whom he did the 7"-only remix of their little ditty "Joggin Beat," a wonderfully light-hearted pop jewel. But first we hear the title track taken from his last solo album under the Soylent Green banner where he exploits his excursions into solid and groovy house music. Simon Baker's "Plastik" is making quite a splash, getting worldwide club play already by some of the most influential DJs around. Another newcomer is Boardroom member Pete Lazonby, who presents "I Miss U" - a cool rockin' club smasher to set dancefloors on fire. Losoul took Unknownmix's "The Siren" from 1989 and straightened it in his very special way. This edit is hotter than hot. Max Mohr's "Lucky Go Wild" is taken from his debut album, and Isolée heads off on another beautiful space escapade with the yet unreleased track "The Jacko Theme." Another unreleased track from the vaults is "Southern Comfort" by My My. The smooth and soft drink they pour in the glass here, proves their versatility and is a real listening treat. Famous? Yes! Aliens
Astronomy for Dogs (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Highly anticipated debut from founding/former Beta Band members... ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Great title...conjuring up some pretty evocative images, but The Sixties 101 would be a more accurate moniker for this album, the first from a trio of ex-Beta Band members' new outfit, the Aliens. Across the disc, the group offers up a primer in virtually everything that made that decade so musically memorable, all wrapped around 11 glittering pop songs... Sheer brilliance this, and without even a hint of the self-indulgence that so defined the late '60s/early '70s. And that's the real beauty of this set, for all its proggy, psych-out elements, every note and each effect within are there for good reason, even at its most seemingly jammy, free-form improvisational... Beyond all the inspired arrangements, exceedingly clever echoes of the past, flawless musicianship, and expert self-production, what lingers are the band's magnificent melodies, be they lavish ballads or revved-up rockers, classic pop from the past for today. Alien they may be, but you'll be begging them to transport you away." (Jo-Ann Greene)

Arthur & Yu
In Camera (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US This Seattle duo made an album with soft, layered vocals that float over textural acoustics, "In Camera" is an audible effigy of a time past, and an album made for forgetting and remembering. Drawing sonic inspiration from the Velvet Underground as well as the studio experimentation of Lee Hazlewood, each track is a study in expansion, centered loosely around chiming guitars and swirling melodies. Grant Olsen's hazy croon is lifted by the smooth harmonies of Sonya Westcott (formerly of Rogue Wave), and both reel in the influence of Nancy Sinatra between the familiar crash of a tambourine and layers of guitar. This debut is built upon nostalgia and exudes an undeniably earnest warmth. PITCHFORK: "Arthur & Yu's hazy melange of acoustic guitars, tambourine, and reverberating vocals manages to bridge the great 1960s divide between psychedelicized California sunshine and the speed-comedown New York detachment of mellower Velvet Underground."

Astral Social Club
Super Grease (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26th)
PS, US Super Grease is a limited edition of 500 vinyl only release from Vibracathedral Orchestra/Sunrrof!/A Band member Neil Campbell. This is a companion release to Astral Social Club's Neon Pibroch cd also on Important. Astral Social Club is the current project of Neil Campbell, formerly of Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunroof!, A Band and many more. Campbell has been active since the early 80s, and The Wire magazine has said that, along with his friends Richard Youngs and Matthew Bower, he "provided the map co-ordinates for much of what passed for a post-punk UK underground during most of the 80s and 90s". Campbell's approach as Astral Social Club could be seen as both a continuation and a refutal of his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra - a continuation in that it continues the quest into the unknown stellar regions of improvised drone-based music, and a refutal in its espousal of most of the elemental organic rock modes that made that band so special. The focus here is more on alien electronics and overloaded loop disorientation, sometimes even working with sounds more readily associated with the far end of dance music to produce a truly vast 21st century psychedelic sound.

Late last year, VHF Records released a compilation/mix CD drawn from the earlier string of self-released CDRs which showcased the diverse methods employed in Astral Social Club recordings.

Black Bonzo
Sound of the Apocalypse (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US Domestic release for Swedish retro-psych-prog act's second album. Their first album was a very popular title for Parasol Mail Order. Think classic Queen, Uriah Heap, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Beatles and Bowie, even a hint of Kansas, encapsulated in tried-and-true Swedish classic 60s and 70s rocksense. The band says "It's more adventurous, original and mysterious then you ever can imagine!" and knowing what we know about their flamboyant and freaky debut we've got two words for you "Whoa!"... Black Bonzo members include vocalist Magnus Lindgren, new bassist Anthon Johansson, drummer Mikael Israelsson, guitarist Joakim Karlsson and Nicklas Åhlund on keyboards. 'Sound of the Apocalypse' was mixed at Tonteknik by Magnus Lindberg, at the same mixing console used for Pink Floyd's 'Animals'. More on this later...

Black Magic Disco
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US BLACK MAGIC DISCO is the new all-star band featuring Tom Greenwood (Jackie-O Motherfucker), Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien) and Ramona Ponzini (Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Praxinoscope). The project was born out of an idea from Tom Greenwood, former leader of the avant-folk-blues ensemble Jackie-O Motherfucker (JOMF), who invited Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka the Italian improv duo My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA), and their close collaborator Ramona Ponzini (also involved with the two brothers in the projects named Painting Petals On Planet Ghost and Praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with Z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all Europe in May/ June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The music which came out of he live performances was totally explosive, combining Ramona's Japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with Greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism, over MCIAA's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys & percussions, creating a still unheard mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, western & eastern, sky & earth.

Coniglio, Enrico
Areavirus Topofonie Vol 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US The album is inspired by the ambience in Venice lagoon. You could say it sounds like a night trip on a mysterious boat, or a flight over a land in the balance between waters and grounds, as a unique landscape running the risk to be jeopardized by the contemporary urban and industry development. The kind of sounds in the work are rich, pieces never static but almost narrative, varied in drone and textures; arpeggio loops rarely sustained by some glitchy rhythmic patterns, sweet naive and distant melody made by saxes or a brilliant piano; dense and not ever conciliating atmospheres, but sensitive in the forms and absolutely inclined to melancholy.

Durutti Column
Idiot Savants (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, UK The Durutti Column follow-up 2006's Keep Breathing with a brand new album, Idiot Savants. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from the Guru himself, Bruce Mitchell. The Durutti Column emerged from the late 70s Manchester punk scene and has remained one of the most intriguing, enigmatic (and arguably under appreciated) acts in the country. The band name is derived from a 60s anarchist movement. - an anarchist group in Europe who published a book with a sandpaper cover so that it would destroy all the other books on the shelves. He borrowed the practice of using sandpaper as a packaging medium, until record shops forced him to stop, fed up of the stock surrounding the Durutti Column being destroyed. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Vini Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. The days of gigging with Joy Division were over and Vini became a virtual recluse. However his reputation grew and by the 90s Durutti Column's legendary status made them a cult attraction all over the world, a position they maintain to this day.

'9 Distilled Dreams' is the mainly acoustic companion piece to the rocking '3WD', both albums recorded during the same marathon sessions, with the song split between the two "moods". 9DD explores Elope dreamy side, their hazy prog-mellowosity referencing a big time Big Star vibe, with nods to Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and even CSNY...

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant 'Radiola'. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Fridge
The Sun (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US It may have been a while since FRIDGE'S last record (2001's "Happiness"), but contrary to what some may think the band never went away, never went on sabbatical and certainly never broke up - they just stretched a little at the edges, and ended up with a bigger, wider sound than ever for their new record, "The Sun." The pure and simple fun of playing music with friends that you can hear in a garage pours off the record. It's the impulse behind everything the band does. But the "The Sun" is still orchestrated with all the musical intelligence to be heard on the ADEM and FOUR TET records. Process is key, with the studio itself being integrated as one of the instruments Fridge 'play'. But really it's Fridge's harmonies that hold "The Sun" together, joining up the dots between their disparate interests and influences. It's not a part of the band's sound that gets recognized enough, but there are plenty of tunes here that will get stuck in your head for weeks.

The Midnight Room (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Two years after the release of their critically acclaimed Sub Pop debut "Valende", the Italian psychedelic avant-pop explorers are back. Though the band is five members strong when they play live, it is now solely the project of founder and songwriter Marco Fasolo. This new record pulses with a nocturnal, feverish, hallucinatory emotional atmosphere, making for a truly unique aural experience. Two guitars, bass, and drums are enriched by swirling keyboard touches, creating an album that feels like music from some forgotten amusement park at midnight. Evoking bizarre, otherworldly images of gas-lit street corners, abandoned theaters, labyrinthine corridors, "The Midnight Room" marries the intensity of primitive rock 'n' roll with a renewed taste for a certain kind of typically Italian melody, albeit deconstructed, shattered, and broken into tiny little bits.

Lightning Dust
Lightning Dust (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US AMBER WEBBER and JOSHUA WELLS have been playing together for many years as part of BLACK MOUNTAIN. They've toured the world and have played impenetrable space-rock to the unlikeliest of audiences. With an abundance of creative energy to spare, the two decided to start a separate project together, that they named LIGHTNING DUST. Committing themselves to a more simplistic approach with Lightning Dust, Webber and Wells also decided to escape the comforts of their familiar instruments and writing styles. On their self-titled debut, minimal and spacious arrangements and a moody, theatrical vocal-style aptly expose the demons, creating songs that creep into your bones with a haunting chill. The album was recorded in a dank cave and a bright blue house, perhaps an unconscious yet obsessive protest of the sunny beach and beer world that surrounded them on the outside. But despite this unattractive external world, and while completing the album in small fits of insanity, the two were compelled to retreat to the coastal summer air from time to time, when they could take no more of the shadowy frame that they had decided to enclose themselves in. Many of the songs on this self-titled debut began years ago as melodies, which persistently floated around in Webber's head. And, conveniently, Wells was at a loss for words to accompany the piano songs that wouldn't leave him alone. Their creation Lightning Dust matched these lingering ghosts with each other, creating a special, lasting work that perfectly brings together the shadows with the sunshine.

Lights Out Asia
Tanks and Recognizers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, US Wisconsin post-celestial-shoegazer trio Lights Out Asia delivers their sophomore full length and debut for n5MD titled Tanks and Recognizers. This follow-up to their critic and fan favorite Garmonia (sun sea sky) pushes their sound far forward with a palpable intensity by giving a seemingly subliminal nod to some of the more electronically minded ethereal bands of the mid 80s to early 90s like Breathless, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine or even the more emotionally rich moments of Colourbox. Lights Out Asia who is actually influenced more by a more current crop of like-minded artists such as Mogwai, Massive Attack, and Robin Guthrie's various works, blend them all, the erstwhile and contemporary, with an updated style, feel and modern expansiveness. Tanks and Recognizers is a cinematic and ambitiously crafted album which could easily fit into any indie rock or electronic music collection. Soaring, floating, and moving forward as it pulls you in to its hopeful heart consuming ebb and flow of electronics, guitars and lofty vocal yearning.

Lindt, Virna
Shiver (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, UK An extended CD reissue of 'Shiver', the debut album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organisation in 1983. Written and produced by Virna Lindt and Tot Taylor, the acclaimed Shiver album offers 12 slices of chic, Cold War pop informed by 1960s spy thriller soundtracks and musique concrete, including the singles Attention Stockholm and I Experienced Love. The album has been digitally remixed and re-modelled from the original mastertapes, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. The new edition of Shiver also features bonus track The Windmills of Your Mind, a rare Michel Legrand cover version from The Thomas Crown Affair originally recorded for the Crepuscule movie compilation Moving Soundtracks. Contemporary reviews for Shiver:"Intrepid undercover agent disguised as a top international fashion model sets out on a secret mission behind the Iron Curtain, armed only with a firm sense of fair play and a gadget-filled powder compact" (NME); "Euro-eccentric. Virna Lindt casts herself as a mysterious blonde in a loving pastiche of Continental movie music" (Sounds); "Only the surly amongst you can fail to acknowledge the splendour of Virna Lindt's new single I Experienced Love, and the equally thrilling Shiver lp, the epitome of Compact's sleek, chic Sixties tease" (The Face); "Imagine a pastiche of all those old Sixties spy series, like Danger Man, The Avengers and The Man From Uncle. Well, this would be the perfect soundtrack to go with it" (London Evening Standard). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and detailed dossier on Virna Lindt. Lindt, Virna
Play/Record (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, UK The first release on CD of 'Play/Record', the second album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organization in 1985. Written and produced by Virna Lindt during a three-week holiday in London, Play/Record tackles girls who cannot stand the colour red, the numbing effect of the new media, and subterfuge and skulduggery in her adopted home town (the single My Home Town). The album has been digitally remastered by close collaborator Tot Taylor, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. Unfortunately Virna abandoned music forever after creating Play/Record, leaving the world a poorer place. Contemporary reviews for Play/Record: "Ms Lindt deftly conveys a sense of breezy, delirious Sixties camp. Arch instrumentals such as the title track and Add It Up are nothing short of wondrous, and the album is a delightful and accurate evocation of a period when music was allowed to be fun" (Melody Maker); "A uniquely crafted voiceover masterpiece, the diverse tempo moves from the sunny waft of single My Home Town to the more sombre tones of Any Colour But Red" (Sounds); "Lush, intelligent and very, very sexy" (Underground). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and liner/recording notes.

Maps
We Can Create (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Fans of Moonbabies will find lots to love here... it was in a drowsy little village somewhere in the outer reaches of a nondescript UK midlands satellite town that Maps came to exist. Floating through these most uninspiring of surroundings, Maps motherbrain James Chapman came upon a sound that was at once monumental and intimate; glorious and uplifting yet strangely melancholic. His debut album We Can Create - recorded in his tiny bedroom, then co-produced in an Icelandic moonbase with Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Björk) and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, Hope of the States) - is a work of heart-stopping extremes. Its eleven tracks run the full length of the transmission spectrum, from euphoric space-rock to folksy, downtempo whisperings and clattering, thudding noise-pop. "It will find you," he sings optimistically on the song of the same name. If you're reading this, it already has.
INDIE LONDON: "Created by "bedroom genius" James Chapman, the album is an other-worldly gem that's by turns laidback and bewitching, yet commercial enough to appeal to mainstream pop culture. The most amazing thing about it, however, is the epic scope of its sound, which assumes an other-worldly quality more befitting the likes of Sigur Ros and ambient Moby despite having been recorded without a single computer... The result is nothing short of essential. It's a hugely ambitious, widescreen epic that recalls everything from the far away electronics of Basic Channel and Carl Craig, through the skewed songwriting of Postal Service, Flaming Lips and Grandaddy to the euphoric sound-scapes of Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine."

Maserati
Inventions for the New Season (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Much has changed in the four years since MASERATI'S last release. In that time, the band's sound has evolved so significantly that only shades of the reverb and delay-drenched guitars resemble their previous output. The rhythm section has been overhauled, with GERHARDT FUCHS (!!!, TURING MACHINE, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, THE JUAN MACLEAN) replacing Phil Horan on drums. The result is "Inventions For The New Season," a bloodshot, 3AM soundtrack to a Michael Mann movie that hasn't happened yet; a sweaty, delirious mix of mid-to-late 70s Pink Floyd, German psych-rock, Krautrock, and mid-80s action film scores. Produced by longtime friend ANDY BAKER in his Athens, GA home studio, Inventions drags the glory years of psychedelic arena rock kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, with the pomposity (and vocals) carefully removed. The mix is pushed firmly in the red, giving the songs a white-knuckled energy that - coupled with the ethereal guitar theatrics - puts one foot on the dance floor and the other on the ocean floor.

Minus Story
My Ion Truss (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US In the distance the land kisses the sky. If you squint just right you can see MINUS STORY in flux there, somewhere between earthbound and ethereal, making sunspots on the horizon line with their noisy & melodic headphone pop. Reared together in America's Midwestern cradle, Minus Story speak their own codified musical language as only childhood friends can share. Tirelessly artistic yet unpretentious, they are unafraid of abject noise, folk, soul, or straight-up pop rock. "My Ion Truss" is Minus Story's Studio Album. It was recorded at ELECTRICAL AUDIO in Chicago with JOHN CONGLETON (EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, THE POLYPHONIC SPREE). Having a producer behind the controls for the first time allowed them to work more collectively as a band, giving them the freedom to record the primary tracks completely live. It is the closest thing to Minus Story's cathartic live show that they've put to tape to date. The result is an epic & anthemic cross between PEARL JAM, QUEEN, BRIAN ENO, and ROXY MUSIC.

PS, US MISHA are ASHLEY YAO and JOHN CHAO. The two have crossed paths since their childhood days in Taipei, but each time, circumstances caused them to move, wandering the world (here in Hong Kong, there in Paris) until they met again after college in New York. Two years after their debut on the highly respected Alphabet-Singles-Series on TOMLAB, the Asian/American duo now presents their first longplayer "Teardrop Sweetheart": a cycle of happy/sad love songs with a new take on an old pleasure: the classic pop album. Walking the line between traditional songwriting and modern music making, settings of grandeur and intimate doubts, Ash and John make little big things, imagining a dimestore Joseph Cornell, Buster Keaton with holes in his shoes.

Orb, The
Orbsessions Volume Two (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19th)
PS, UK Following the success and critical acclaim of our previous excursion into the spherical archives, Malicious Damage is proud to unleash this glorious second volume of unreleased Orb treasures. Few artists have created such visionary and influential electronic music as Alex Paterson and his various incarnations of The Orb. The Orb's blissed-out music helped define the emerging ambient-techno/house genres blending natural sounds, spoken-word, heavy dub bass lines and constantly shifting beats with a wry sense of humor, rolling rhythms and exhilarating samples to revolutionize UK dance clubs, 90s rave culture and influence a whole generation of artists now plying their trade in the 21st century. This second collection features collaborations with legendary German composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Thomas Fehlmann, Andy Hughes, Vincent "vin100" Crane and Alex's long-standing friend and musical accomplice Youth. It will be available on a beautifully packaged cd and double coloured vinyl in a gatefold sleeve CD. Paley, Tom
Beware Young Ladies! (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE?)
PS, SWEDEN New recordings from underground folk legend Tom Paley, with special guest Bert Deivert, recorded in Sweden in early 2006. Tom has been recordings since the 50s! Tom Paley was born and raised in NYC, where he first fell in love with old-time music. He began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and quickly excelled at both instruments. He briefly performed in a duo with the great folk musician Woody Guthrie in the late 50s. Later he helped form The New Lost City Ramblers, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen. This group inspired a greater mainstream interest in traditional music. The Ramblers considered their live concerts primarily as opportunities to share great old songs they had discovered with their fellow folk performers. After The Ramblers broke up Paley formed The Old Reliable String Band (with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose). Tom moved to Sweden, where he lived from 1963 to 1965, before moving to England where he has resided ever since. Tom continues to tour in America and Europe both solo and with other musicians.

Project Jenny, Project Jan
XOXOXOXOXO (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 14th)
PS, US Even as our hyper-digital age makes the world smaller, the soundscape of American music keeps getting bigger. Genres multiply, divide, revive, and recycle themselves-reinvented as pre-this, post-that, or this-core, and that-hop. So slap a label on Project Jenny, Project Jan if you want but you'll find that label is constantly changing. On XOXOXOXOXO, you'll witness how a young duo from Brooklyn pushes the boundaries of modern music. The band's signature sound-Sammy Rubin's jaunty electro-pop hooks fueled by saucy freestyled vocals from Jeremy Haines-is infectious without being predictable. And on this album, you will hear shades of every genre, from Latin, old school hip-hop, and reggae, to blues, rock, old time rags, and 80s electro. Some songs even brush up charmingly against bluegrass, big band, and swing, resulting in a sound that is fiercely, uniquely their own. So can you call Project Jenny, Project Jan post-indie-pop electro-core? Sure, if you insist on categorizing. The bottom line is that this is smart, energetic dance music for a new generation of listeners-the kind of people who'd rather shake it on the dance floor than puzzle over sub-genres.

Saint Joan
Wrecker's Lantern (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Album title alludes to the 19th century practice of luring a ship onto the rocks by faking the beam of a lighthouse with a swinging lantern, causing the ship to run aground, its treasure to be plundered. It continues the bands interest in all things maritime...the sea as the subconscious as Carl Jung would have it. The band takes inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch in "The Four Last Things" and The Tempest in "Singing Bowl". They conjure love & loss, seasick sailors & freight trains, hills & mountains, rivers & fading street lights. Epic, psychedelic stream-of-consciousness psychodramas about loss like 'December' contrast with the more fragmented, melancholy of "Gone" with its looping guitar & lush strings. The wide screen folk-rock drive of "Singing Bowl", place it alongside vintage Walkabouts. Recorded in an old warehouse in the autumn "The Wrecker's Lantern" evokes time & place at every turn and yet seeks to transcend them. It is the sound of beauty, timeless & incarnate.

Sian Alice Group
"Nightsong (Part A)" / "Nightsong (Part B)" (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US At the heart of London-based SIAN ALICE GROUP are multi-instrumentalists RUPERT CLERVAUX, BEN CROOK and vocalist SIAN AHERN. Rupert and Ben two old friends who have been active in the music scene for the better part of a decade. Rupert is an engineer and producer, presently working with Spring Heel Jack and Treader Records, and has recently toured as a drummer with Women & Children. Ben Crook is an accomplished music video director who has for some time been working on a series of home recordings under the name 40,000 Ghosts (his debut 7-inch was just released on Of The Manor, Of The Manor). After contemplating working with each other on their own music for several years, the duo finally got together last fall to work with vocalist Sian Ahern. Out of this initial collaboration was born Sian Alice Group, a band that combine pop melodies, improvisation and Sian's ethereal voice. In order to flesh out their sound for their debut live show in Copenhagen they enlisted three more members: Andy Ingle (guitars), Sasha Vine (violin/piano/vocals) and Douglas Hart (electric bass). In April 2007 the band played their second ever show, hand-picked to open for Spiritualized in London.

Slaraffenland
Private Cinema (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US Based in Copenhagen, Slaraffenland found its final formation in 2002: Christian Taagehøj, Mike Taagehøj, Bjørn Heebøll, Niklas Antonsson, and Jeppe Skjold. They expertly expanded on the guitar-bass-drums standard with brass and woodwind instruments, various racketmakers, and transfixing gang vocals. Many of them childhood friends (and Mike and Christian identical twins), they've spent years developing a sound that conjures everything from free jazz to noise to melodious addictive rock. PITCHFORK: "This Danish quintet's first full-length release on Home Tapes is a full of dark and radiant songs that compete and unite at equal turns. The album opens with the peaceful, anemic bombast of "Sleep Tight", its winds and strings chugging through crashes of cymbals and bass. An ominous chorus of voices enforces a marching cadence, but the precision breaks midway for guitars and distant howls reminiscent of Animal Collective's Campfire Songs... The album as a whole is a brave perambulation, drawing on the acidic thunderstorms and gorgeous lullabies of two great Icelandic exports (Björk on "You Win" and Sigur Rós for aching closer "How Far Would You Go"). In music, it's not often that this borderline overindulgence, where structure and uniformity are all but forgotten, works. But here the members of Slaraffenland showcase their virtuoso skills and shared vision, always modestly." (Liz Colville)

Speal, Shane
Stealing the Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 8TH)
PS, US It could be a modern incarnation of the old blues scenario: A man sits in his single-wide mobile home with a primitive guitar & belts out mean murder ballads & dark spirituals through a rusty harmonica mic. But it's not a "scenario." This is the real shit. Speal was living in the middle of a Pennsylvania trailer park. He plays a cigar box guitar. And he recorded this album on a simple 4-track cassette recorder. "Stealing the Fire" features stark homemade recordings of Speal performing the works of Timothy Renner on a primitive cigar box guitar. It was a simple premis in the beginning. Speal just wanted to know what Renner's dark folk music would sound like if were soaked in Delta blues. Speal covers Renner's work from Stone Breath, Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Jamboree & solo recordings.

Starkey
Dementia (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US 1 Sided 12". A 12" from Philly's king of Gutter-Grimey beatz, Starkey. "Dementia" is a six minute chunk of hotness, with a bassline that sounds like a cello filled with bees that's been plugged into a rat pedal, and drums that are mean to the marrow. Starkey will probably be best remembered for the mainframe mutiny known as "Local Headines" on Werk Discs, or perhaps his remix of Drop the Lime on Ruff/Peaceoff, both of which made for a stand out ought-six. Starkey also co-runs the label Slit Jockey with compadres Dev79 and El Carnicero, which in addition to Starkey productions has featured vocal/production collabs with Mathhead, Kano, Ghetto, and a bunch of others. Each record is had stamped, and contained in a craft sleeve Ala 70's Reggae sound system dub plates. The record is also limited to 400 copies, so we think it will be a rare bird quite soon.

Text Adventure
I Believe in Lassies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, SPAIN Once upon a time, computer games didn't rely on graphics to suck you in. The first "Text Adventure" A game which relied on your imagination to unfold it's magic, has formed the inspiration for our favorite release of the year so far. The second album by David Roy and Stephen Scott, I BELIEVE IN LASSIES is homage to lo-fi brilliance in a world gone pro-tools mad. You see, it's about addressing the simple things. IBIL is a record about girls by boys too shy to talk to them in person, and one that communicates in an aching swirl of acoustic and digital lo-fi, the longing of not only meeting that spry-eyed girlie, but actually being able to say hi. What must be a crippling disability for David and Stephen, is a blessing for the rest of us, as we get treated to 10 tracks bursting with the self-confidence that can only come from living in hope. Crafted from acoustic guitar, Casio keyboards, circuit bent speak and spell machines, and live drums recorded to a "very, very old 8-track". The songs have a layered aesthetic in the vein of Adem and Tunng. But this is more than an exercise in nerdy bedroom electronica: "I have tried to move away from that" asserts David. "The Golden Portion was very much sequence-based, computer-recorded, programmed beats, tons more keyboards and hardly any guitar. I felt it had been done to death already, so i wanted to make a grander sounding folk record with loads more guitars and more vocals too" Songs are as important to the boys as textures, and the melodies come at you with such self-assurance that you don't know whether to meet them with a bear hug or duck for cover. With collaboration comes perspective, and Stephen's vocals liberate David's soundscapes, adding a psychedelic edge in the vein of My Bloody Valentine, but with a dose of skewed realism. Lines like "I'll be the scarf around your neck" (If It Could Talk It Wouldn't Say Anything) make you gaze up from your shoes and focus instead on your breaking heart. This yearning wistfulness can be traced through a number of influences; from James Taylor and Nick Drake, through to Ariel M and Jim O Rourke. The record also pushes the line between analogue and digital instruments just a little bit further. Are the bleeps at the end of Pink Smoke, forged through Logic or a circuit bent keyboard? Is that a harmonium or a sine wave on If It Could Talk It Wouldn't Say Anything? Is that a fast flowing stream or a microphone left on in a pocket. Really good records speak their own language, and ask you to investigate them to understand. And so it is with IBIL: complex textures and simple melodies conspiring to make it at once disarming and compelling. It's music inspired by accidents, by finding beauty in the unintentional, the 'wyrd' in the everyday. David states his inspiration as "Whenever I hear something natural that has gone wrong or has been digitally manipulated. Like an old field recording of some birds or rain that has been distorted." Text Adventure is perfect pop, with a post rock sensibility: Gorgeous acoustic guitar lines hang hammocked in the mix between crackling static like an electronic rainstorm. The tracks come on like a series of commands strung together to create a whole gaming experience. Take Boobook (For R) which opens with three minutes of bossa guitar worthy of Eureka era Jim O Rourke before even a sniff of a lyric. Or Nothing is Wrong (Nothing is wrong) whose Mice Parade-esque guitar line warps into a digital portrait of the wintertime before bursting back again into full summer.

Tigersmilk
Android Love Cry (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US It gets nasty at times--feedback laden, meters in the red--even psychedelic as TIGERSMILK pour it on thick, straight from some cosmic mind's eye teat. "Android Love Cry" is the third album from the voodoo concrète jazz crew of ROB MAZUREK (CHICAGO UNDERGROUND, MANDARIN MOVIE, EXPLODING STAR ORCHESTRA) on cornet, laptop/synth (and banjo), acoustic/electric bassist JASON ROEBKE (RAPID CROCHE, FRED LONBERG-HOLM TRIO), and percussionist YLAN VAN DER SCHYFF (TALKING PICTURES). It's a dynamically gorgeous and dissonant thirteen part cycle that delves into obscure conditions of wilderness and transformation backed by a pulsing and often volatile syncopation not far from Max Neuhaus' electro-acoustics or even Cluster's space 'n' rhythm glow. Even with engorged synthesizer and percussive fields Tigersmilk's heart is the post-bop flare of Bill Dixon's late-60s orchestra and the oceanic pull of minimalist cool. Tradition is deep in these abstractions--it's the unshakable bond of these three travelers who've created an album even a dark prince would love.

Feil Knapp (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, NORWAY First album in six years! In many ways "Feil Knapp" (Norwegian for wrong button) represents a sound that sits somewhere in between "Trøbbel", 1999's seminal "Nedi Myra" on Ferox and his underground cult hit "Søppelmann" on Svek. With influences ranging everything from Count Ossie & The Residents via 22 Skidoo to Idut Boys, Torske has created his very own & characteristic signature sound, a unique blend of warm & melancholic house, quirky avant-disco, leftfield electronica & dark, heavy psychedelic dub. In other words; this album has everything that we have learnt to love Bjorn for. Weirdly melodic & wonderfully groovy.

Vandervelde, David
Nothin' No (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US DAVID VANDERVELDE'S debut full-length "The Moonstation House Band" (released on January 23, 2007) has been praised by critics, hailed as a stunning debut and a "glamorous, ambitious studio work" (CMJ). MOJO rejoiced in "the arrival of an eccentric talent whose head is firmly inclined toward the past" while NME claimed his work recalls "the best of T. REX, ELO or early BEE GEES." Now, only six months after introducing David Vandervelde to the world with his debut 45 "Jacket", SECRETLY CANADIAN is presenting the album's lead-off track "Nothin' No" as the second single from "The Moonstation House Band". A paean to young lust and getting high, "Nothin' No" is a modern rock classic that recalls the spirit of glam rock's most earnest & timeless teen anthems. Written & recorded almost three years ago when Vandervelde was 19 years old, it was put to tape in just one night at JAY BENNETT'S PIEHOLDEN STUDIO in Chicago. Vandervelde played all the instruments in an inspired frenzy that belied his age, displaying the maturity and swagger of a man much longer in the tooth. Also included on this extended CD single are an alternate version of "Feet of a Liar" (recorded for Vandervelde's Daytrotter session at the end of 2006), a visceral new song called "Cute Pretender" and a beautiful Jimmy Page-esque instrumental called "Dancing Sea Gulls Instrumental".

The Great Koonaklaster Speaks: A John Fahey Celebration (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US JOHN FAHEY'S death -- he is believed to have died in the explosion of a house during the filming of Michelangelo Antonioni's "Zabriskie Point" in 1969 -- is shrouded in confusion and camouflage. His remains were never found, and the question remains: did Fahey purposely stage his own death for his own occlusive purposes? Fahey's collusion of folk, blues, ethnic and modern classical methods, which suggests both the trickster and the shaman, has attracted a cult of musician followers over the years, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime. But his unsolved disappearance inspired another cult, which worships Count Saint Germain, a Rosicrucian adept who is said to have never died and has assumed various identities over the centuries. Disciples of this sect, heard on this record, believe Fahey -- "The Great Koonaklaster" -- to be the most recent incarnation of Saint Germain. They view Fahey's music as a synthesis of Saint Germain's abilities as a classical composer and skills as an alchemist, and have absorbed his guitar style in order to pay homage to him. A variety of ritual services are contained within, and there is much to be gleaned from these Koonaklasterians' offerings; whether or not you choose to accept this "Immortal Motherf#cker of the 20th century" as Saint Germain is up to you.

Verbose
Wonder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 22ND)
PS, JAPAN Verbose is UK based artist Allan Richmond and Wonder is his long awaited new full length album on Tokyo based label Moamoo. Following a debut album on Neo Ouija and a string of EPs on influential independent labels such as Cactus Island, Awkward Silence Recordings and Unlabel, Verbose returns in 2007 with a full length album featuring brand new material recorded during 2006 and 2007. A further departure / progression from the electronica of early releases, Wonder develops the themes introduced on the split ep with Maps and Diagrams on Awkward Silence Recordings. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes dark and chaotic, Wonder is a unique marriage of quiet and loud melancholia, undercurrents of electronica and hypnotic post rock - a soundtrack to loneliness, isolation and rejection. Musically inspired by diverse artists such as Autechre, Cult Of Luna, Mono, Mogwai and 65daysofstatic and adopting themes from an ongoing obsession with Japanese cinema and literature (Haruki Murakami in particular), Verbose takes another step towards defining his intended sound.

Videohippos
Unbeast the Leash (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Teetering on the fringes of happycore, techno, and noise, the Baltimore duo VIDEOHIPPOS have concocted heavy pop rounds on their debut "Unbeast The Leash." Jubilant at points, dark at others, Videohippos seem to have a sense of foreboding about the future. Some could point to hints of Manchester, and possibly Providence, but the end result is ultimately Baltimore City and the Videohippos home in the phenomenon that is Wham City (PONYTAIL, ECSTATIC SUNSHINE, DAN DEACON et al). As their name suggests Videohippos perform live with both audio and video. Backed by a giant screen while performing, Videohippos project personal and pop culture video collages in synch with the music. Though captivating its hard to distract from the stick skills of drummer KEVIN O'MEARE (drums, vocals, keys) and pop weavings of guitarist JIM TRIPLETT (guitar, vocals, keys). Pummeling his 4-piece kit with precision and power, O'meare draws drooling mouths agape, as well as creating the centerpiece for the Videohippos ballads. With beats in place Triplett works in waves of guitar melodies either via 6-string electric or a small toy guitar. Sampled beats and tones fit snuggly between the two while both Hippos share vocal duties. Cloaked in coats of neon, fluorescents, and bouts of joyous mania Videohippos debut "Unbeast The Leash" at first glance would be a pop album, but after a couple listens you realize there is so much more going on here...they are trying to warn us.

Von Spar
Von Spar (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US When VON SPAR made their critically acclaimed entrance in the pop circuit in 2003 (e.g. cover story in Spex Magazine) they were regarded as the German answer to the Post-Punk/No-Wave-renaissance. But their debut was more a clever parody about eighties-style-hipster-bands. In the meantime the former trio grew to a five-piece band, which now (three years later and wiser) returns with an uncompromising album that gets ahead of all expectations. It will surprise their audience and critics and maybe leave them confused at first. Detached from the usual style issues Von Spar have exorcized the Zeitgeist and overtaken the discourse. There is no scheme. Anything goes.

Votolato, Rocky
The Brag & Cuss (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US New album moves from the minimal acoustic guitar and vocals of makers to a fuller sound. Most of this record was played by a full band, featuring James McAllister (Sufjan Stevens) on drums, Bill Herzog (Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter) on bass, Casey Foubert (Pedro the Lion) on electric guitar, banjo, mandolin and all percussion, and Rick Steff (Cat Power, Hank Williams, Jr.) on Hammond b3, piano, and accordion. The bare emotion that made 'Makers' great is still present in spades, but this time Votolato has ventured further into classic country territory. Votolato paints broad pictures with a simple turn of phrase, and he pulls you into a world of reminiscences and feelings that are truly timeless and eminently human. A profound sense of freedom and release comes across in the new record, which in turn is more hopeful, laid-back, and embraces life with a resigned optimism.

Yarrows, The
Plum (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Since 2002, THE YARROWS have been a quiet constant in the New York and Philadelphia music scenes. The band formed in a once-abandoned lodge in the middle of hundreds of acres of woods outside Lambertville, New Jersey. There's more than just a hint of something beneath the surface with this band and this record. One can feel that there's more going on than they're ever going to tell you about. Why "The Yarrows?" The band's just elusive about that. And why "Plum"? "Hmm...So sweet, so cold." "Plum" will release worldwide on EMPYREAN RECORDS. "The quiet life in sometimes loud rooms has been good to us," says Pierce of the band. "It allowed for a lot of mesmerizing experiments, wide-open songwriting, and a real integration of the band and the songs and the music." Now, the overwhelming response to pre-release tracks has the band ready for something new. "We're really looking forward to people hearing this record, and by some happy chance it seems like people might just hear it the way we do."
