A Grave With No Name
Mountain Debris
PS, US The group's brittle yet fluid vision of music combines
ethnic nostalgia, avant garde interpretations of folk &
sheer abstraction. Too eccentric to be deemed as pop, too strange
to be pigeonholed as rock, the windswept opener sounds like
Mark Linkous singing into a canyon, while "Ghosts &
Stones" calls
to mind Daniel Johnston at his playfully melodic best

Acid
House Kings
Sing Along With
PS, SWEDEN Last copies. Singer/guitarist Niklas Angergård,
his bassist brother Johan and guitarist Joakim Ödlund formed
the Swedish twee-pop trio Acid House Kings in 1991, inspired
by their shared disappointment over the breakup of Felt and
common dissatisfaction with Morrissey's Kill Uncle album; signing
to the German label Marsh Marigold, the group issued their debut
EP Play Pop! in early 1992, followed later that year by the
full-length Pop, Look & Listen! The group's rediscovery
of childhood favorites the Pet Shop Boys informed 1994's Monaco
G.P. EP; disappointed by the record's lack of chart success,
Acid House Kings maintained a low profile for the next three
years, finally resurfacing in 1997 with the single "Yes!
You Love Me." Advantage Acid House Kings followed the next
year, with the single "We're the Acid House Kings"
closing out 1999. Niklas Angergård also played in the
great Red Sleeping Beauty. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Adverts, The
Anthology
PS, UK 2003 release. The Devil's Own Jukebox -- a Fire Records
sublabel -- presents an extensive double CD collection of 38
furious tracks by legendary British punk rockers The Adverts.
On the first disc: Three years. Twenty-six songs. You'll hear
them all on this crash course in the story of the Adverts, a
band of one chord wonders who stormed into punk rock on a wave
of disbelief at the beginning of 1977 and staggered out again
on a wave of disinterest at the end of 1979. To show how they
sounded live, there's a second disc with a recording of a 1978
concert, previously released as Live At The Roxy Club, but actually
recorded at a different -- now unknown -- venue.

Amanaz
Africa
PS, GERMANY QDK Media releases an official reissue of Africa
by Zambian heavy psych rockers Amanaz, licensed from band member
Keith Kabwe. Amanaz was formed in 1973, and this record came
out in 1975. Three of these songs are in the native language
Bemba, and 9 songs are in English, recorded in Kitwe, the third
biggest city in Zambia up North. Musically, it goes in the same
direction as Blo, The Witch, and Question Mark, but this album
is way cooler and more stoned with amazing fuzz guitar all over
which sounds like an African version of early Cream. The cover
makes it look very traditional, but after a few spins, you realize
that this one is very special. It's sooo cool, sooo tightly-produced
and easily comparable with UK underground albums with a touch
of African beats. Still completely unknown, so this album has
not been scored yet by the collector's scene. A real surprise
-- extremely heavy yet extremely groovy in spots, too.

Big Sexy Noise
PS, US Big Sexy Noise follow up their vinyl mini album, released
earlier this year, with a full blown Self Titled CD. The band,
fronted by Lydia Lunch and Gallon Drunk alt-rockers James Johnston,
Terry Edwards and Ian White, have recorded a further five Johnston/Lunch
originals plus a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover to complement the original
six tracks. Big Sexy Noise is the primaeval bump, grind and
holler of White's thuggish drums, Johnston's moronic low-tuned
riffing and Edwards' brutal organ and sax interventions led
by Lunch's take-no-prisoners vocals.

of July the 24th 2009 at Dr. Johnny Walker's (Soledad Brothers/Cut

style. "When they hammer away at max. tempo, they sound
like The Stooges, with the Asheton brothers replaced by a really
really loud Fender Rhodes piano. When they slow it down and
groove, they sound like a broken down Booker T & The MGs/the
theme from 'Taxi' being run-over by a taxi. They are, in parts,
genuinely funky, and as jazz as a rock concert gets these days.

around the hip hop template, but on "The Music Scene"
he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to
the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from
"one basic beat and building off it" (the standard

and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising
and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, "I

Boesel, Jason
Hustler's Son
PS, US Boesel headed into the studio in March of 2009 with a
core group of collaborators: Mystic Valley Band member Nik Freitas,
Blake Mills (Band of Horses), and producer Jonathan Wilson (Elvis
Costello 'Momofuku' and Jenny Lewis 'Acid Tongue'). He eventually
sought out the additional talents of Benmont Tench (Tom Petty
and the Heartbreakers), Orenda Fink (O + S, Azure Ray), David
Rawlings (Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show), Taylor Goldsmith
(Dawes), and fellow Rilo Kiley member Blake Sennett. The results
is an 11-song Americana album filled with powerful imagery and
a sound that brings new colors to the sonic palette of country-folk
greats like Townes Van Zandt, mid-'70s California rock, and
the alt-country scene of today.

Boyd, C.J.
Aerial Roots
PS, US Deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone... "Aerial
Roots", the latest album from C.J. Boyd, contains three
songs, and clocks in at just under 45 minutes. Equal parts ambient
and virtuosic, CJ Boyd's bass playing builds upon a foundation
of great bassists like Charles Mingus and Edgar Meyer. C.J.
Boyd's aesthetic sensibility seeks to wed minimalism with a
chamber-esque maximalism. Often flowing from singular, meditative
bass lines into explosive, layered, and hugely complex walls
of sound, CJ masterfully orchestrates waves of bass loops coupled
with Jazz-driven improvisational prowess. Utilizing only various
bass instruments and some human-mouth-sounds, creating these
lush arrangements is no small feat. Never suffering from the
structure less experimentation so prevalent in improvised music,
CJ Boyd's vision remains intact throughout the duration of "Aerial
Roots".

Buffalo
Dead Forever
PS, Australia "Dead Forever..., the legendary 1972 debut
by Buffalo, was the first to be released outside the UK on the
prestigious Vertigo label. It remains one of the first truly
sinister albums from an Aussie band of the day. Highlights of
this collection of heavy psychedelic blues included covers of
Free's 'I'm a Mover' and the Blues Images' 'Pay My Dues', plus
the band-penned tracks 'Leader', 'Suzie Sunshine', 'Bean Stew'
and the melancholy, atmospheric ballad 'Forest Rain'. The album's
centrepiece is the awe-inspiring title track; 'Dead Forever'
-- its dense, heavy riffing, multi-tracked solos, throbbing
basslines, rasping vocals and a weird echoed sound to the drums
created the 'definitive' Buffalo sound that would be fully unleashed
on their subsequent classics Volcanic Rock and Only Want You
For Your Body. The line-up for this album was: Dave Tice (vocals
- later vocalist for UK R&B band The Count Bishops), Alan
Milano (vocals), Paul Babli (drums), Peter Wells (bass - later
guitarist for Rose Tattoo) and John Baxter (guitar). The 3rd.

Captain Marryat
S-T [reissue]
PS, GERMANY Captain Marryat were from Glasgow, Scotland and
they recorded this demo album in 1974, released in a tiny pressing
on the Thor label, hoping to get an EMI or Chrysalis deal, who
both showed interest in the band at the time. They wanted to
record only a single, but instead came up with a complete album
of self-composed tracks. Since it was not that easy for a Scottish
band to get attention down in London, this album was the only
pressing ever done and was sold at band gigs only. Five musicians,
great organ, vocals, extra heavy fuzz-guitar with drums and
bass -- amazing underground songs, influenced by Deep Purple,
Uriah Heep and Beggars Opera -- a true lost classic. Dig on
the truly tribal percussion, searing guitar leads and drugged-out
keys on the fully-instrumental and galloping "Dance Of
Thor." The band formed in the early '70s, around 1971 to
1975, generating quite a following while playing all around
Scotland and the Borders at various venues including Burns Howff
in Glasgow which was a very popular venue as other bands such
as Alex Harvey Band, Nazareth and Beggars Opera also played
there. Shadoks was lucky to find the band themselves to make
a deal so this beauty can finally conquer the world of rock
music. Members include: Jimmy Rorrison, Hugh Finnegan, Allan
Bryce, Tommy Hendry, and Ian McEleny.

Curgenven, Robert
Oltre
PS, US "Transparence" resonating dubplate | turntable
| field recordings | guitar feedback | ventilator/fan.
The "Transparence" dubplate, developed at O ' in Milan,
Italy, works within the physical limitations of the vinyl medium,
employing the object as sound source and also sound medium,
to become an instrument in its own right. Using the non-linear
acoustics of the gallery at O, the dubplate was recorded, and
later cut to disc in Berlin, at very low volume. This ephemeral
audio signal becomes present during playback only at high volume,
which subsequently produces, by design, a unique physical response
from the room, air and amplification - creating deep undertones
and blossoming overtones via these manifold resonance's; simultaneously,
the action of the stylus gently abrades the soft vinyl surface,
causing the dubplate's sound to gradually disappear and evolve,
successively losing higher frequencies whilst acquiring new
artifacts and crackle. OLTRE documents this degradation and
transformation over two months of live performances. The integrated
system of subsonic feedback from ventilators, acoustically gated
binaural microphones, modal micro-variations in guitar feedback,
field-recordings from across remote areas of Australia and the
live, physical interplay of the turntable, dubplate and stylus,
combine to create a field which moves beyond the original recordings
and their individual spaces.

Einsturzende Neubauten
Kollaps
PS, GERMANY 2003 release. Originally released in 1981, Kollaps
is the seminal, form-destroying debut album by German industrial
pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten (trans. "Collapsing
New Buildings"). The band's use of junk metal, power drills,
jackhammers and other surprising instrumentation would come
to define their challenging and continually inventive career,
making them not only one of the originators of industrial music,
but one of the world's most influential and far-reaching forces
at the intersection between avant-garde and rock music. Formed
in 1980 in the wave of the Dadaist movement Die Geniale Dilletanten,
after a series of devastating live performances and personnel
changes (one of which briefly involving electronic musician
Gudrun Gut), the band's line-up cemented itself with core members
Blixa Bargeld, F.M. Einheit (previously of Hamburg-based post-punk
band Abwärts) and N.U. Unruh. On Kollaps, a violent collision
of urban primitivism and punk sensibilities, the trio declared
war on every conventional way of listening, combining an intense
mess of atonal guitar drones with brutal scrap metal percussion.
At a time in Germany in which the wall encircling West Berlin
transformed the city into a state-subsidized, near-paradisiacal
freak-enclave for artists, Einstürzende Neubauten offered
cathartic cascades of noise, employing steel parts, tin drums,
drills, hammers, saws and untuned electric guitars, all crowned
by Bargeld's bloodcurdling screams and feverish, apocalyptic
texts. Kollaps, with its atonal essence, embodied exactly what
the title suggested: decay and destruction, illness, doom and
death. Years later, with the fall of the Berlin wall behind
it, Kollaps still sounds as radical and extreme an artistic
statement as ever. This expanded digipack reissue includes 10
bonus tracks, including 9 tracks from Stahldubversions, a rare
1982 cassette release. CD comes housed in a deluxe six-panel
tri-fold digipack with 23-page attached booklet.

Einsturzende Neubauten
Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T./Drawings Of O.T.
PS, GERMANY 2002 release. Originally released in 1983, Einstürzende
Neubauten's second album marks a radical progression in the
band's sound as well as a revolutionary step forward in the
realms of industrial and experimental music. Bassist Marc Chung
(ex-Abwärts) and electronics engineer Alexander Hacke (later
a member of Crime And The City Solution) joined the band during
this time, and singer Blixa Bargeld also became a full-time
member of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. Despite each members'
background, Einstürzende Neubauten's ethos -- "Destruction
is not negative, you must destroy to build" -- treaded
on ground that was explicitly anti-music. Through their intuitive
compositional approach and application of found, industrial
objects into song forms, the band's sonic trajectory was intent
on generating entirely alternate modes of music-making. In contrast
to the all-out destructive barrage of their debut, however,
Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T. reveals an astonishing maturity
in its varied and dynamic range of textures while still being
no less uncompromising. From the gritty live wire pulse of opening
track "Vanadium-I-Ching" to the disorienting field
recording and jarring mechanical upheaval of "Hospitalistiche
Kinder/Engel Der Vernichtung" to the panicked steel abrasions
of "Neun Arme," this album is a masterpiece of what-the-fuck
urban primitivism. Most effective of all is "Armenia,"
one of the most essential songs the band has ever made, with
its subtle, slow-building tension and haunting Armenian orchestration
taking Bargeld's signature inhuman screams to uncharted levels
of psychological turmoil. This digitally-remastered reissue
includes 3 bonus tracks and comes housed in a deluxe six-panel
tri-fold digipack with an attached 16-page booklet of lyrics
in German and English.

Estroe
Elemental Assets
PS, GERMANY This is the debut full-length release by hotly-tipped
Rotterdam-based Estroe. The CD consists of tracks produced by
Estroe over the span of a few years, in which she spent a lot
of time enhancing her production techniques and developing her
creativity. As the artist herself explains: "Some tracks
were made in rough times, while others were made under happy
circumstances, and perhaps you can tell. For me, music is an
emotional vent allowing me to express my feelings and freeing
me of my restlessness. This makes the album very personal and
I am terribly excited to share it with the world and with you."
Directly inspired by her recent life experiences and passions,
"Flirtatious Concubine" was produced right after a
particularly-inspiring booking in Tokyo, and "Inspirited
Away" came to life thinking about two producers who really
inspired Estroe: Steve Rachmad and John Beltran. Elemental Assets
is reflective of her DJ-work -- full of versatile techno with
room for deep undercurrents as well as pure dancefloor work.
Her style is warm, subtle, but at the same time very energetic.
Two guest vocalists, Miss Kittin and Sam Leigh-Brown, also help
lift these delicately-crafted tech-house tracks to the next
level.

Outer Limits Collective (Wingdings/Explorers/Matrix Metals/Foxy

repository is a storehouse of collective waste consciousness
from all beings of the universe, i.e. all unfiltered myth &
material of the human/alien/animal mind, laying dormant in a
hidden dimension resembling a disposal area or transfer station
somewhere within our spectral plane. A vast depot for all universal
race memory that passes beyond our mortal earthly cognition
and subconscious apparatus. This reposited latent substance
is available to all organisms within our particular sphere,
all beings earthy and paranormal. The recordings here represent
the three main stages of unconscious withdrawal: 'Glimpse',
'Recurrence', and 'Manifestation' - they are a blue print of
sorts. There may be a possibility of the retrieval of materials
- the recycling of this substance alongside the development
of individual real-time understanding of eternal materials and
impressions that are constantly escaping our sensory grip. The
repository shows itself as what appears to be part of an undivided
whole, a section manifested in our dimensional field through
thin channels of emotion & vibration. These phenomena are
the result of direct brain-repository contact, a glimpse into
the infinite plenitude of energy and data housed by the repository.
With each glimpse, each peek through these looking-glass channels,
the mind gains a deeper insight into the potentials hibernating
within the data-pool and the particular characteristics and
movements of the repository. It is important to note that the
usage of the word 'flashback' connotes not only the re-collection
or re-existence of memory and dream data from the past, but
also the future. For instance one can 'flash forward' just as
easily and achieve the desired results." -- Outer Limits

slated for the Spring of 2010, "What To Do With Daylight"
is being released in the U.S. to reinforce the successes Brooke
has experienced over the course of the last couple years. To
date, the album has only been available as an import and, more
recently, digitally. With the public demand at a high level
for all things Brooke Fraser, this is a great catalog item which
will prove to be an evergreen seller over the course of time.

PS, US Matthew Milia & crew bring 14 hair-raising songs
about the dark stretches of thought within relationships &
realizations of ones home. Milia's loquacious melodies are enhanced

percussion of Ryan Etzcorn, the soulful harmonies of Anna
Burch & the spidery banjo of David Jones. Sounds like Stephen

Gilbert, Bruce
Oblivio Agitatum
PS, UK Editions Mego proudly releases a new album by the UK's
legendary experimental noise musician Bruce Gilbert, whose career
stretches back to late-1960s British avant garde art and music
scenes, and who has since played an important and influential
role with his involvement in various rock-based formations (he
is a former member of Wire), and choreographic projects and
art installations. Oblivio Agitatum is Gilbert's first album-length
release since Ordier (realized in 1996 and released in 2004),
essentially making this his first album of the 21st century.
A startling and mesmerizing work which recalls some of his mid-1980s
works such as This Way and Shivering Man. An ever-shifting set
of agitated and obscure tones, creating a sense of confusion
while still being highly structured and concentrated. A stunning
return.

Glass Rock
Tall Firs Meet Soft Location
PS, US Glass Rock is a song, is a band, is a way of life. Glass
Rock is the crystallized movement formed by the molten lava
makeout of the two bands of the album title: Tall Firs meet
Soft Location. It's a werewolf and a rhino on a first-date rampage
of Korean Food and poppers, doing the Cabbage Patch on the boardwalk,
kissing babies with beer breath, all with truthful love in their
hearts. The core elements of the Soft Location sound are Kathy
Leisen's haunting voice and boneyard guitar, and Matt Kantor's
slo-mo jet fuel bass jamminating. Add Tall Firs: Ryan Sawyer's
could-blow-your-pants-off-but-prefer-to-slowly-work-them-over-your-hips
drumming and Dave Mies and Aaron Mullan's creamy dual-savant
guitar stylings: two dudes who don't even know how the other
guy's guitar is tuned but nonetheless have brought the tandem
knockout reverb dropkick since 1991. The band actively refuses
to discuss influences, even with one another. With two pairs
of childhood friends in the band, the music just happens and
the listener is left to speculate. The dilettante thinks Chan
Marshall or an Astral Weeks-era Van Morrison caught an extra-rad
time machine ride and now inhabits every moment from 1955-2013
simultaneously. The serious aficionado is thinking Martha Reeves,
Amon Dull II, the Gories, Otis Redding. But Heads know: This
thing is wigs, Pepsi commercials, Sam Cooke, hardcore festivals,
and free stuff on craigslist. In reality, Glass Rock are a prisonyard
football team: a motley collection of wizened lifers, small-time
pimps, and the wrongly convicted. Leisen is their Burt Reynolds.
A painter on the Outside, she woke up back in the huskau of
a recording studio after Awesome Michael ratted her and Kantor
out to Ecstatic Peace. In the yard Tall Firs were hanging around
bench-pressing twice their body weight. This record documents
their crushing and dramatic defeat of the prison guards, and
their harrowing escape during the ensuing melee. There is nothing
contrived about this band. Neither derivative nor hybridized,
GnR II are truly Chimeric. This ain't reference-rock. This is
the half man/half shark/half alligator sung of in days of yore,
with inflatable Sasquatch feet and one popsicle arm. This thing
will get bestial with you on the dancefloor, and will hold you
tight on a pre-dawn canoe ride; staring at the stars crying
at the wonder and terror of it all.

Hammill, Peter
Roaring Forties (Remastered)
PS, US Cargo UK brings three remastered recordings from the
1990s that cover the period in which Peter worked with the pH
quartet - Manny Elias on drums, Stuart Gordon violin and David
Jackson saxes. The sequence began with Roaring Forties, a set
which included not only a long-form piece, "A Headlong
Stretch," which recalled much of Peter's earlier work in
breadth, ambition and complexity, but also some very direct
approaches to songwriting and playing in "Sharply Unclear"
and "Your Tall Ship."

X My Heart (Remastered)
PS, US The pHQ undertook a number of tours after Roaring Forties
and so it was natural that the (occasional) group was on Peter's
mind when time came to record the next studio album. This was
X My Heart. It might have been a blueprint for future work with
the line-up, but in the event there were to be no more more
live shows for this set-up. It features one of his most beautiful
ballads, "Earthbound," which features heartfelt vocals
and a gorgeous string accompaniment. "Narcissus (Bar &
Grill)" will delight fans with its classic Hammill style,
while "A Better Time" shows that he's one of the more
underrated vocalists in rock music today. Definitely one of
his finest, and a good place to start for newcomers to the unpredictable
and challenging world of Peter Hammill.

PS, US HUNGER! (originally from Portland, Oregon), were full-fledged
members of the LA psych scene of the late-sixties, and despite
their opening for top-shelf acts like the Doors and The Strawberry
Alarm Clock, their one and only album did not make much of a
splash at the time, and the band dissolved soon after its release.
However, the album has since become one of the most collectible
in its genre and upon listening one can see why. This rhythm-heavy
Doors-influenced hard psych is frequently referred to as "one
of the best psychedelic albums of all time!" Band member
ED KING went on to play with the STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK and

Johnston, Freedy
Rain on the City
PS, US Freedy Johnston seemingly went into hiding after 2001's
Right Between the Promises, playing the occasional live gig,
releasing an archival live disc, and putting together a collection
of old four-track demos, but otherwise staying out of sight.
Rain on the City marks his first collection of new songs since
his tenure with the majors came to an end early in the decade,
and while Right Between the Promises sometimes sounded like
Johnston was forcing the cheerfulness after 1999's dour and
downbeat Blue Days Black Nights, Rain on the City strikes a
more comfortable balance between the bright and blue sides of
Johnston's musical personality, and in terms of getting a sound
that suits his songs, this is his most effective set since This
Perfect World in 1994. Producer Richard McLaurin knows when
to let the performances stay spare on "Lonely Penny"
and "The Kind of Love We're In," and he also knows
when and how to let Johnston rock, and when the guitars and
drums kick in on "Don't Fall in Love with a Lonely Girl,"
the effect is nothing less than thrilling. Johnston also seems
to have gotten his stride back as a songwriter, and these 11
tunes are full of the sharp but thoughtful wordplay and unique
characters that make his best work so pleasurable; quite simply,
it's hard to imagine anyone else writing something quite like
"The Devil Raises His Own," "Venus Is Her Name,"
or the title track, and his dusty Midwestern tenor brings these
stories to vivid life, which listeners can soak up like they
would a good book. Rain on the City lacks the consistency of
Johnston's masterpiece, Can You Fly, or its follow-up, This
Perfect World, but unlike the albums that followed, this collection
is a beautiful example of Johnston playing to his strengths
and reminding us why he's one of the best and most singular
American songwriters at work today. With any luck, it won't
take quite so long for him to make something this comfortable
but pleasantly surprising again. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

JPLS
The Depths
PS, CANADA This is the second full-length album by JPLS for
the M_nus label. The Depths is a collection of complex, challenging
compositions that beam in from the depths of the M_nus universe.
Fusing classic minimal techno with industrial electronica, he
has created a brooding, deep-space opera that needs to be experienced
in its epic entirety before individual aspects can be extracted
to exploit their dancefloor potential. All JPLS releases are
dominated by an underlying concept -- a self-imposed set of
values that are stretched to their logical limits and beyond.
2007's Twilite set the tone, containing a set of tracks strictly
conceived between the hours of 3 and 5 a.m. Then there was the
application of delay and overlays to create a "non-standard"
harmonic content and defeat the machines on the Combination
EP. This time around, inspiration has been derived from theoretical
physics, specifically the idea of sub-sub atomic movement and
interaction. During the course of the album, JPLS explores continuous
creation, the transformation of sound into energy and the expanding
and contracting reaches of space and time. The collection begins
with "Reset," a 12 and-a-half minute exercise in construction
and deconstruction. The vast soundscape pulses with expectation
before a host of mutated percussion starts scything its way
across the stereo field. The electro-magnetism and gravitational
pull of "Zero Point" creates more elegantly-hewn glaciers
of sound that slowly disintegrate into white noise, reforming
in different spatial arrangements while the melody slowly fractures
into anti-melody. "Displacement" features a relentless
kick that beats a path straight through the core of a spinning,
turbulent vortex. "Basis" adopts a straighter structure
modified by electrified percussion fills -- physical sounds
vanish before reappearing in different forms, converting to
energy, and then back again. The booming, broken electro of
"Fold" twists an undulating bass line in on itself,
adding an additional layer of random harmonics to the spectrum
before the shuffling triplets of "Collapse" introduces
an alien vocal. "Convolution" is a perfectly-executed
marriage of stripped-down beats and deep harmonic percussion
programming that underlines the unique way JPLS approaches electronic
composition. "State" rounds it all off with bleeps
and gentle melodies that draw ever closer until they reveal
themselves as giants; their residual energy leaving imprints
that linger long after disintegration. The album loops perfectly,
maintaining its cyclical nature by utilizing the same pads for
the end as the beginning. Limited edition of 500 copies.

Kryptonics
Rejectionville [anthology reissue]
PS, AUSTRALIA Rejectionville is the definitive 37-track anthology
of this perennially under-appreciated garage power-pop outfit
from Perth, Western Australia. Kryptonics emerged in 1985 from
the same creative melting-pot that spawned The Stems and The
Triffids. Over a 7-year period they recorded some fantastic
garage-soaked tunes, with an array of line-ups that included
future members of Lubricated Goat, You Am I, New Christs, Hard-Ons,
The Chevelles, Challenger 7 and (the reformed) Radio Birdman.
The Kryptonics existed in the pre-digital era and their vinyl
catalog (which now demands high prices on eBay) has never previously
been issued on CD. Subsequently, they have remained one of the
more enigmatic bands to emerge from the much-celebrated '80s
Australian garage-rock'n'roll scene. A band that many have heard
of, rather than heard. Rejectionville includes the band's entire
recorded output plus an extra CD of unreleased live and studio
tracks. It documents the band's journey from young Scientists/Cramps
wannabes to a more mature, Detroit rock-flecked power-pop sound.
This 2CD is presented in a deluxe gatefold card wallet with
a 28-page booklet full of liners, photos and a "Pete Frame"-style
family tree that maps the band's extensive genome. This is an
essential purchase for the Australian garage/rock'n'roll enthusiast
as well as those already familiar with the band.

La Casa, Eric
Zone Sensible 2/Dundee 2
PS, AUSTRALIA For the best part of a decade, Eric La Casa's
attention to sonic phenomena has resulted in some of the finest
contemporary Musique Concrete to emanate from France. A listener
of the highest order, La Casa's methodology for sound recording
allows for a versatile examination of both urban and natural
environments and it is these interests that are captured on
this new edition for Room40. With an ability to find unique
perspectives on his sound subjects La Casa's site-specific works
"Zone Sensible" and "Dundee" seek to draw
a detailed focus and expose unfamiliar, incidental and previously
unheard sound worlds. Zone Sensible, exclusively composed from
recordings of bees in the Olivier Darne's hives, located in
the Saint Denis suburb of Paris, reveals a chaotic, frenetic
microcosm that speaks to the density of the real, whilst hinting
at our ears to experience a dance of oscillations - wings beating
with boundless energy. As a contrast to this microcosm, Dundee,
composed with recordings of Dundee city (during a 10 days residency
at DCA museum), sees La Casa turn his microphones outward. Rendering
a captivating sound map of sorts, "Dundee" was developed
in collaboration with USA Film experimentalist Ken Jacobs' "nervous
magic lantern", on a 6 channels device. From these recordings
LA Casa composed variations and movements in interaction with
Ken Jacobs' processing - a contemplation from the real to abstracted
life.

Last Dinosaur, The
Hooray! For Happiness
PS, SPAIN The Last Dinosaur is Jamie Cameron and Luke Hayden.
This album was recorded on and off between December 2007 and
March 2009. No computers were used in the recording of this
music. All songs were recorded at home (Essex) on a multi-track
recorder, usually late at night and often written as we recorded.
All song were limited to 16-tracks, so to save tracks drums
were recorded with two microphones (one in the bass drum, one
overhead) and a looping pedal was used in instances where harmonizing
parts were needed with a lack of tracks. A lot of parts in these
songs were first take improvisations (for instance, the guitar
solo in The Record Player, all the piano in Gusts Of Wind..,
the piano flourishes in Home and I Found My Voice, the viola
in The Song Playing.., most of the sax parts throughout the
album and more). This music is by no means perfect, so if that's
what you like perhaps find something a little more polished,
this is raw, unplanned, home recorded, honest music with background
noise, off-notes, hiss and mistakes and we wouldn't want it
any other way. These songs were mastered by John Golden @ Golden

Banhart etc).

Le Sang Song
S-T
PS, US If you've been following underground music of Seattle,
you might have already heard music by CRAIG CHAMBERS before.
If you haven't, you will now. Chambers is the creative force
behind LE SANG SONG, the name for what originated as a solo
recording project for songs that for the most part are quieter
than those of his other excellent bands (THE LIGHTS, LOVE TAN).
Le Sang Song's basic framework is simple: get a good rhythm
going, a rolling bass line or laconic guitar strum, paint the
corners with more rhythms and harmonies. The result is the same
kind of late night living room vibe that I get from listening
to heavies like Syd Barrett or Skip Spence. While Chambers draws
from folk styles, he pushes his songwriting and varies Le Sang
Song's instrumentation to include violin, thumb piano, and other
noise makers. Chambers is also an excellent lyricist, something
uncommon these days, when vapidity is standard fare. The lyrics
are carried by a keen sense of vocal melody. Recorded in 2007,
the album sat neglected. Determined to give Le Sang Song the
audience it deserves, I dusted off Dragnet Records and decided
to put it out myself. Live performances of Le Sang Song are
Chambers accompanied by his lovely wife ADRIA GARCIA on guitar/vocals,
MATTHEW FORD (Love Tan, FACTUMS, YVES SON ACE) on drums/percussion,

Star Bird
PS, US In 1981, Leroy Franklin went into the San Antonio studio
of Manny Guerra with a group of session musicians to record
his 2-sided masterpiece, "Star Bird." The A-side,
a spiritual, funky slice of Modern Soul, is reason enough for
DJs & collectors to put this 45 in their box. The flip,
a spontaneous anti-drug rap over "Star Bird's" instrumental
track is a dancefloor filler. Recorded just over a year after
"Rapper's Delight," "Star Bird II" is
quite possibly, the first Rap record ever recorded in Texas.

McClure, Bruce
Vouchsafe Me More Soundpicture: Fain Make Glories
PS, US Bruce McClure is well known on the international experimental
film circuit for his unique projector performances that utilize
film loops & modified 16mm projectors. But there is also
an equally innovative sound element to his work and he has been
embraced by the experimental music community as well. Bruce
performed at the Chocolate Monk curated 'Colour Out of Space'
festival in 2008 and was chosen as an opening act for Throbbing
Gristle's reunion tour in the spring of 2009. During McClure's
performances the optical sound signals from each projector are
fed through banks of guitar pedals, manipulated live, and played
at extremely high volumes through the p.a. system. The different
loops phase in and out of each other resulting in what could
be described as a power electronics version of the early tape
experiments of Steve Reich and Terry Riley, while sparser sections
have an off-kilter minimal techno feel reminiscent of Plastikman
and the early works of Thomas Brinkmann. This album features
four excerpts from a professionally recorded performance in
early 2009 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN. Edition
of 375 copies in heavy duty covers silkscreened by Monoroid.

Minamo
Duree
PS, US "Back in 1999, on the forefront of the Japanese
electronic/acoustic microsound scene, was the then two-piece
live improvisation band Minamo (two more members were added
in 2001 to make the current four-piece lineup). Their live concerts
helped pioneer this hybrid of delicate and natural instrumentation
with microscopic electronics and subtle digital processing bringing
an organic richness to a genre that threatened to remain coldly
digital. Fans of Minamo not lucky enough to see them create
their music live have enjoyed their studio albums and collaborative
releases which captured these performances and processed them
into hypnotic drones and electro-acoustic soundscapes. Durée,
their last studio work since 2007's collaboration with Tape,
and their follow-up to Shining on 12k (12k1031, now out of print),
takes influence from the French philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson's
concept of 'pure durée,' an idea that one's consciousness
is a constant flow and not something that can be divided, reversed,
or measured. Minamo used these ideas in creating their music,
despite the contradiction of the time-stamped CD format, to
try to subvert the ideas of compartmentalized 'time' and 'space.'
With a strong sense of non-linearity and flow taken from Bergson's
ideas, Minamo have created a colorful, skittering wash of music,
noise, and texture that embraces a sense of out-there-ness.
Minamo are Yuichiro Iwashita (acoustic guitar, percussion),
Namiko Sasamoto (keyboards, saxophone, percussion), Keiichi
Sugimoto (electric guitar, computer, nintendo, bells, recording/mixing)
and Tetsuro Yasunaga (percussion, harmonium, analog synthesizer,
pedals, small instruments). Like all of their music, Durée
was recording during long, live, improvisational sessions and
later finessed and mixed in the studio for release. Their process
this time around, however, was much more analog than before.
While they have always incorporated guitars, computers and synthesizers
into their work, Durée captured performances created
with an abundance of acoustic and percussion instruments and
analog synths, keeping digital effects to a minimum and preferring
the dirty sound of guitar pedals. The process this time around
came easier due to the natural musical communication built between
the members over the past 10 years. Durée simply finds
more playing and interaction than editing and programming as
compared to previous releases and, according to Sugimoto, is
finally the mark where Minamo wants to be, and a template for
work to come."

T.B. Sheets
PS, US Van Morrison, weaned on blues records while growing up

on the elder statesman's Never Get Out of These Blues Alive

Nowik, William
Pan Symphony In E Minor
PS, SPAIN Previously released on vinyl by Guerssen Records,
now available on CD. One of the newest and most surprising discoveries
in the '60s & '70s rock rarities field, William Nowik's
Pan Symphony In E Minor caused a big hype among collectors.
Certainly easy to understand, as it's an ace album no one had
heard of before. Guitarist William Nowik recorded this obscure
instrumental record back in 1974 somewhere in New York. It has
such a deep feeling, and is nothing anyone could have done without
really loving it aside of any commercial view. Psychedelic,
progressive, very early Floyd-sounding at times, Crimson-esque,
and a kind of sound that reminds of the early '70s British underground
but with an experimental, trippy touch. Fourteen tracks in total,
but played like suites. Seems only 200 copies were pressed and
never distributed, so it needed 35 years to be discovered! This
wonderful reissue comes with the intended original artwork (it
came out in a green and black cover instead of the black and
white that William wanted), has nice remastered sound and includes
a booklet with rare, unseen photos and extended liner-notes.

The Live Anthology
PS, US The Live Anthology is a four-disc set of recordings drawn
from thirty years of live performances. The collection brings
together material from 1978-2007 culled from hundreds of hours
of live concert recordings covering every era of Tom Petty and
the Heartbreakers' tours and represents the best tracks as chosen
by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate. The producers
made no fixes or overdubs, letting the newly mixed original
recordings showcase the invention, spontaneity, craft, and the
musicianship that has made Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers among
the most celebrated live performers of their time. Along with
powerful interpretations of their own classic hits and originals,
The Live Anthology features the band tackling some of their
best-loved cover material, from classics to obscure beauties
to unexpected adaptations. The theme from Goldfinger, the Zombies'
'I Want You Back Again,' the Grateful Dead's 'Friend of the
Devil,' early Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well,' Booker T. and the MGs'
'Green Onions,' James Brown's 'Good, Good Lovin' and many more.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers travel wide, paying their musical
debts through song and showing just how confidently the band
moves across genres and over time.

Beat in Hell
PS, US A new 7-inch from Washington DC-based garage punk basher
THE POINTS. Blistering guitar, brain-bashing percussion, and
the lo-fi analog sonic storm of BLACK ICE's organ will be enough
to melt the diamond off your needle. This record includes "Beat
in Jell," a menacing two-and-a-half-minute song that has
all of the elements you love about The Points-fuzzed out guitars,
spitfire vocals, and minimalist drum patterns that will send
you straight into a fit of hysteria. "F Dali" is the
other A-side to this gem, with straight dspm, possible Guiness
Book of World Records fastest 4/4 beat recorded by a human,
and high end ear piercing scream of melody from the organ, it
will satisify for your melted face. The B-side is the track
"Shout." This song clocks in a bit over five minutes,
so expect longer thrills and even more beer spills. There is
also a nice theremin treatment, for you, the listener. Overall,
melodies and structure, this one is sure to be an unforgetable
sound."

Pussygutt
Gathering Strengths
PS, US Third full-length release from this Boise, Idaho duo
following two critically acclaimed efforts - the Sea Of Sand
double-LP on OESB and She Hid Behind Her Veil CD on 20 Buck
Spin. PussyGutt continue to develop their unique brand of doom
soundtrack heaviness on Gathering Strengths, which features
two side-long compositions titled 'Silence Within' & 'Spirit
Walker'. Clarinets, violin, and cello are all prominent - lending
this album even more of an avant-classical feel than previous
efforts. The band calls this album 'an esoteric meditation on
soul and nature' and they cite Alvin Lucier, Henry Gorecki,
and Arvo Part as primary influences for these recordings - along
with the funeral doom of groups like Nortt, Catacombs, and Celestiial.
Aquarius Records sums it up best in their review of the CD:
'This is some seriously sinister shit, sweeping and darkly cinematic,
the soundtrack to the eventual collapse of the universe, the
sound of dying stars, or of some long slumbering beast awakening
after millennia... infused with a deep otherworldly beauty.'

PS, UK Martin Rev, the avant keyboard half of NYC punk pioneers
Suicide, releases a solo album on the Blast First Petite label.
Stigmata was recorded in New York City and features 14 tracks
that heave with glitched-out, digitally-distorted, synthetic
orchestral sounds -- quite unlike anything he has released before.
A timely "flash-forward" of an album, it has already
been described as "genius" by Spiritualized main man,
Jason Pierce, and continues Rev's now four decades of eclectic
electronic musicianship. And to further celebrate the album's
release, Neu Galleries (London) showed a series of Rev's "abstract
instinctive scores" throughout November 2009. Blast First
Petite also continues to celebrate Martin Rev's partner, Alan
Vega's 70th birthday with the release of their Suicide covers
series with tracks from Bruce Springsteen, Primal Scream, Peaches,
Sunn 0))), Lydia Lunch, Iggy Pop, Julian Cope, Vincent Gallo,
and many more.

PS, SPAIN Previously released on vinyl, now available in a CD
version. In 1967, a bunch of U.S. and Argentinean kids recorded
a magical album which has remained unknown for many years due
to its extreme rarity, with less than a handful of copies known

album could be regarded as the ultimate teen garage folk-rock
album, ever. An album of fragile beauty, full of teen charm,
innocent vocals, jangly guitars, charming, lo-fi sound and a
lost-in-time atmosphere. Guerssen Records is proud to present
this mega-rare album to the world, with the production fully
benefitting from the band's involvement and assistance. The
original master tapes were lost, but the sound has been carefully-remastered
from an original near-mint copy. Extensive, detailed liner-notes

Spacemen 3
Sound of Confusion [reissue]
PS, UK Originally released in 1986, Sound Of Confusion was the
debut album by Spacemen 3, one of the most influential bands
of the '80s British underground. The number of bands with a
sonic debt to the Jason Kember/Peter Pierce partnership seems
to grow every year. Having forged iconic status, they reinvented
noise in music, although they were much more than a noisy guitar
band. Spacemen 3's use of noise owed as much to the importance
of harmonics, repetition, tone, distortion and some sort of
higher aspiration, be it religious or opiate redemption or bliss.
The feeling they aimed at with intensity makes it irrelevant
if it's about heroin or a slightly pastiche idea of Jesus; it's
the focus and intent that can suck you in and take you for a
ride; it's music that believes in the primal and heavenly power
of sound. Sound Of Confusion is a blistering, overdriven two-chord
assault throughout, with a strange bleakness and despair creeping
through the hypnotic sprawl. Their covers of The Stooges' "Little
Doll" and The 13th Floor Elevators' "Rollercoaster"
are absolutely devastating. This reissue comes housed in a gatefold
cardboard sleeve, a miniature replica of the original LP.

Tactics
The Sound Of The Sound: Vol. 2 1984-1988 [anthology reissue]
PS, AUSTRALIA Sydney band Tactics existed for a decade from
1978 to 1988 during which time they helped define the Australian
"new wave" sound. Along the way, they released five
essential (and long-deleted) albums and a handful of now-collectible
and impossibly rare singles and EPs. With influences ranging
from The Velvet Underground and Television to Arthur Lee's Love
and reggae, Tactics was difficult to categorize, and miles away
stylistically from the identikit punk bands they often shared
stages with. Lyrical themes of suburban displacement and uncertainty
stemmed from singer Dave Studdert's awareness of existentialist
writers like Rimbaud, Nietzsche and Foucault, as well as his
appreciation and understanding of indigenous Australia, and
in particular, Aboriginal song cycles. Sound Of The Sound Vol.
2 is a 42-track, 2CD compilation that focuses on the band's
later output between 1984 and 1988, when they experienced their
closest shave with Australian mainstream success. It features
the Blue And White Future Whale album (1986), the previously-unheard
demos for their final album, The Great Gusto (considered by
the band to be far superior to the actual album), plus rare
singles, B-sides and unreleased live tracks and demos. The package
is presented in a handsome 6-panel wallet with a lush 20-page
booklet stuffed with photos and Studdert's evocative liners.

Talk Normal
Secret Cog EP
PS, US DUSTED MAGAZINE: "On this five-song E.P., Brooklyn-based
duo Talk Normal -- drummer Andrya Ambro and guitarist Sarah
Register -- create a nice racket that does a deft job of splitting
the difference between harsh sonics and the essential song-oriented
structures required of noise rock... Sure, there are some obvious
touchstones here -- Sonic Youth, Magik Markers, Ut, Teenage
Jesus -- but the songs never feel derivative. Though various
sorts of processed sounds work their way in and out of the picture,
the band's aesthetic is built on a basic foundation of guitars,
drums and vocals. Talk Normal are making their music amidst
an increasingly cluttered underground landscape, and the duos
seeming intrepidness in the face of that fact shines through."

Television Personalities
And Don't the Kids Just Love It [reissue]
PS, UK Originally released in 1981, this is Fire Records' 2002
digipack CD release of the debut album by Television Personalities.
Television Personalities have over the years climbed up from
the indie punk scene to their cult hero status today. For some,
they have remained the quintessential punk band, whilst for
others they have become the foremost exponents of post-sixties
pop psychedelia and an indelible influence on many of the early
Creation label and C-86 bands as well as the likes of Kurt Cobain,
Evan Dando and many, many others. The Television Personalities
were the brainchild of singer/songwriter Dan Treacy, who grew
so inspired by the nascent punk movement. The first relatively
stable TVP line-up consisted of Treacy, organist/vocalist Ed
Ball and guitarist Joe Foster, who recorded the band's 1980
debut ...And Don't The Kids Just Love It. The cover of ...And
Don't The Kids Just Love It -- a collage bringing together super-model
Twiggy and The Avengers' John Steed -- is a strong indication
of where Television Personalities are coming from: their debut
is a loving ode to sixties-era pop and pop culture, referencing
movies ("Look Back in Anger"), Kinks-like class commentary
("Geoffrey Ingram") and psychedelic casualties ("I
Know Where Syd Barrett Lives"). It's a perfect introduction
to the band's jangling psychedelic pop punk and Dan Treacy's
whispy tales of love and life.

Third Eye, The
Brother [reissue]
PS, GERMANY Shadoks reissues on CD the third and final album
by South African heavy-prog outfit The Third Eye, which was
originally released in 1970 on Polydor. The music is closer
to the album Awakening..., without the brass arrangements, and
with more organ-based compositions with beautiful vocals and
guitars. The amazing drumming and bass holds the tracks firmly
together and drives them forward. Comparable to bands from the
U.S. and UK underground such as Electric Flag, Chicago and Keef
Hartley Band. If bands from South Africa hadn't been banned
in Europe and USA at the time, albums by The Third Eye would
have become as popular as the previously-mentioned bands from
U.S. and UK. All three Third Eye recordings are killer albums
and you should not miss any of them. Members include: Ron Selby

Third Eye, The
Awakening... [reissue]
PS, GERMANY Shadoks presents the first of three albums reissued
on CD by heavy prog/psych South African band The Third Eye.
The original pressing came out on Polydor in 1969, and thanks
to the cooperation of band members Dawn Selby (Hammond organ)
and her brother Ron Selby (guitar), this project came to life
again. The Third Eye started playing in 1968, based in Durban
-- a coastal city several hundred miles away from the recording
and musical hub of Johannesburg. Awakening... came out in 1969
when Dawn Selby was only 14 years old. Just imagine her age
when you listen to the blistering organ and piano tracks. Followed
by two more albums Searching (1969) and Brother (1970), The
Third Eye produced a veritable volcano of work in a short period
of time, even challenging fellow peers Freedoms Children for
the title of heaviest band in South Africa. Awakening... is
the most complex of all three of their albums, with great brass
arrangements, piano, Hammond organ, fuzz-guitar and soul-infused
vocals. Musically headed in the direction of bands such as Electric
Flag, The Flock's Dinosaur Swamps, Chicago, The Nice, and Al
Cooper, this is pure electric underground of the best sort.
Other members include: Maurice Saul (vocals, lead guitar), Robbie
Pavid (drums), and Mike Sauer (six-string bass).

Third Eye, The
Searching [reissue]
PS GERMANY Shadoks reissues the second album by South African
heavy proggers The Third Eye. Searching shortly followed after
their debut, originally released by Polydor in 1969. Today,
originals of this album are rare as gold-dust and among 2 or
3 others, the most valuable collector's items from South Africa.
Many collectors who have basically everything in their collection
are missing this one. The music is heavier, the lyrics full
of political statements, and it's more psychedelic and a bigger
step down into the musical underground. The 14-minute track
"Awakening" is really amazing with tons of great organ
parts and extra heavy fuzz-guitar. Members include: Ron Selby
(lead guitar), Maurice Saul (vocals, lead guitar), Dawn Selby
(piano, Hammond organ), Robbie Pavid (drums), and Mike Sauer
(six-string bass).

Trago, Tom
Voyage Direct
PS, NETHERLANDS Tom Trago is part of the new school of Amsterdam
producers. He is also an accomplished DJ and is the "Trago"
in Yuro&Trago with Cinnaman (known from their 2007 debut
Primary Roots, 2008). Voyage Direct is Tom Trago's long-awaited
follow-up to his first EP on Rush Hour, 2006's Live With The
BBQ. This 7-track mini-album shows his diversity within the
genre of house, reaffirming that house music can still be sexy,
deep, raw, emotional and passionate. The package includes the
promo-released "Passion," plus a host of new tracks,
and two bonus tracks. Highlights could be the piano-led schaffel-meditation
of "Lost In The Streets Of NYC," the raw, almost motorik/disco
rhythm of "On The Side," or the swing of "Brothers
Of String," but in fact, every track is a highlight in
its own right. A must-have for any house connoisseur or lover
of Detroit-ish touches. Trago is a true original in the burgeoning
Amsterdam scene, and an innovator in tiny touches that make
everything fit perfectly to make your body move.

Anachronous
PS, US Organic creations, blooming beneath the soil while drawing
nutrients from their surroundings, soon to be unearthed, cooked,
and consumed by native populations. Also, Floridian slang for
two populations. The first; those who float upon inflatable
inner tubes in aimless, lackadaisical delight down the state's
many freshwater springs. The second; those who seek adventure
tucked away in the innermost furl of a wave just before it washes
ashore. Finally, four longtime friends who make music for the
purpose of challenging themselves and hopefully those around
them. They draw inspiration from their namesakes and channel
these feelings through guitars, throats, and drums. Angular
riffs swerve throughout the mix atop surf-influenced rhythms,
with the aggressive trappings of previous efforts remaining
apparent but not overbearing. They speak in dialects and metaphors,
fluctuating seamlessly amongst obtuse structures, shifting momentums,
and rolling cascades. Features members of TWELVE HOUR TURN,
TRUE NORTH, STRIKEFORCE DIABLO, ASSHOLEPARADE, WE MODERNS, and
others. For fans of Obits, Rites of Spring, Wipers, Milemarker,

Bird-Brains [Bonus Tracks]
PS, US Though tUnE-yArDs' debut album Bird-Brains was eventually
released by the famed indie label 4AD, it began as truly independent
music. Merrill Garbus (also of Sister Suvi) recorded the album
at home with a digital voice recorder and shareware recording
software, patching together artfully messy beats, ukulele, field
recordings, and her surprisingly rich, almost androgynous voice
into songs with folk purity and the boldness of mash-ups. Despite
-- or more likely, because of -- the pared-down instrumentation,
Bird-Brains is equally eclectic and personal. She ends the winding
melody of "For You" with spoken word snippets of her
and a child eating blueberries, then seamlessly shifts abruptly
to "Sunlight"'s bludgeoning beats and high-strung
guitars. Throughout, Garbus pulls off stunning contrasts, whether
it's her torchy voice and lyrics like "tiny teenage cocks"
giving "When You Tell the Lions"' simple melody a
surprising worldliness, or "Jumping Jack"'s brittle
percussion and massive bass lending a menacing edge to its nursery-rhyme
chant. Best of all is "Hatari"'s exotic yet homespun
pop, which layers Garbus' barbaric yawp over a beat that feels
like a bhangrahip-hop hybrid. Even on the album's more straightforward
songs, there's something surprising to be found, like the coughs
used as percussion on "Jamaican." With all of Bird-Brains'
sonic intricacy, it takes a little while to appreciate Garbus'
equally smart and evocative lyrics, although "Synonym"'s
"You remind me of when I didn't have to wear any clothes
... you remind me of the person you used to be" stand out
immediately. Few debut albums are audacious enough to call to
mind Odetta, M.I.A., and the Raincoats -- often all at the same
time -- but this is just such a rare bird. ~ Heather Phares,

Matinee Grand Prix, The
PS, US Brilliant new collection of songs from Matinee's truly
international coterie of popstars. The disc kicks off with a
firm favorite from Denmark's Northern Portrait entitled "Stirling
Moss" which establishes a car racing theme rather nicely.
Scottish popkids Strawberry Whiplash answer the challenge with
new smash "Boy In The Bubble Car," while Australian
legends The Lucksmiths deliver their swansong recording with
the predictably stunning "Get-to-bed Birds." Sweden's
The Electric Pop Group is represented with perhaps their strongest
song to date "Believers," while Clay Hips-American
expats living in Germany and Ireland-don't disappoint channeling
their inner Pet Shop Boys with "Disappointed." The
album's centerpoint sees the return of England's mighty Tender
Trap after four years with the new classic "Danger Overboard,"
and Australia has its second contender with the very welcome
return of Simpa¡tico and new favorite "Australian
Idle." Finland's Cats on Fire begin the year with a fantastic
new song called "The Hague," while Scotland is back
in fine form with Bubblegum Lemonade and "Cuts Like A Dream."
Finally, American hipsters Math and Physics Club break a two-year
silence with a great new song called "I Keep To Myself,"
and Australia's The Guild League soundtrack the final lap of
the compilation with the lovely "Bookmark." Demonstrating
the continuing strength of the label's roster, this timeless
collection is a vital release for the Matinee faithful and a
fantastic introduction to some of the best indie bands of today.

Chamber Music (James Joyce)
PS, UK Originally released in 2008. The idea was simple: find
contemporary artists influenced (however loosely) by James Joyce's
style to finally turn the poems into musical works. The only
directive was to not mess with the words! Five years in the
making comes this epic 36 artist interpretation of James Joyce's
1907 collection of poems, Chamber Music, charting love from
innocence to experience. Curated by James Nicholls from the
Virgin Passages and with contributions from major established
artists (Mercury Rev, Ed Harcourt, Minus 5, Lee Ranaldo from
Sonic Youth with Text Of Light) and cult players (Jessica Bailiff,
Gravenhurst, Mike Watt, Bardo Pond), this represents a sweeping
but unified expression of Joyce's early, love-hungry verse.
Beautifully packaged double slipcase CD and double gatefold
vinyl with artwork by Stephanie Black. Other artists include
Monica Queen, War Against Sleep, Venture Lift, HTRK, Califone,
Owen Tromans, Airport Studies, Mary Lorson, Willy Mason, Noah

Unpiecing The Jigsaw: Velvet Underground Tribute (4XCD)
PS, US The idea for this 4 cd set came from collecting together
all the tribute tracks originally released on the 3 legendary

The influence of The Velvet Underground on rock greatly exceeds
their sales figures and chart numbers. They are one of the most

Veirs, Laura
July Flame
PS, US Her seventh album explores the emotion of mid-summer.
Drenched in wood smoke, sunlight, pollinators, pastoral dales,
fireworks and warm nights, her lyrics explore the dichotomy
between one's desire for permanence and security and the realization
that such things rarely exist. The album breaks from Veirs'
previous full-band efforts, although many of the same players
make appearances on the album, including longtime collaborators
Karl Blau and Steve Moore. String arrangements are featured
more on this album than on others; the brilliant improviser
Eyvind Kang plays viola on many songs, and legendary arranger
Stephen Barber composed hauntingly beautiful string quartet
arrangements for three songs.

like they could be the house band at the dystopian oceanside

collection from which the group takes their name. The Vermillion
Sands' ramshackle female fronted country tinged garage rock
gives off some serious Mekons-meets-Headcoatees vibes or a femme
fronted counterpart to the records Dan Melchoir has been pumping
out as of late. Reverbed whips and twangs and a little mouth
harp underlie some serious hooks and melodies. Look out for

Vibrators, The
Under the Radar
PS,UK New Vibrators albums don't come along too often -- this
is their first since 2002's Energize, and their first, too,
since frontman Knox returned from a four-year lay-off. But with
Nigel Bennett and the rhythm section of Eddie Hedges and Pat
Collier joining him, it's business as usual for one of the longest-lived
of all original U.K. punk bands, kicking off with the punchy
buzzsaw of "DNA Robot," and driving on through 13
more slabs of classic Vibes volatility. There's something so
reassuring about it as well -- other survivors from their era
may have retained their original sound, but the Vibrators are
one of the few who have kept it fresh. Still lacing their punch
with humor, still packing the flamboyant minimalism that was
their most dramatic calling card, the Vibrators have also hung
onto that innate sense of melody that made "Baby Baby"
such a blessing all those years ago. And so "We're the
Dead," "Darkest Before Dawn," "Nightmare
Town," and "The Altar at Midnight" lead a pack
that slips effortlessly in alongside the best of the band's
past output, and there's only one thing here for you to disagree
with. The album closes with a song called "Everything I
Do Is Wrong." But it isn't. Everything's right. ~ Dave

We Are Country Mice is the kind of band that America loves.
This band breathes the true American spirit or creative rock

not lo-fi and there's a healthy dose of country thrown into
their distorted, anthemic attack. Singer-guitarist Jason Rueger
has a high-pitched snarl and a penchant for breaking up his
band's Crazy Horse-style songs with bouts of distortion. In

Whines, The
Insane OK
PS, US Upstart label Just For the Hell of It Records (based
on one of the greatest films of all time, seriously) has unleashed
the debut 4-song 7" EP with their mind-numbing VU-inspired
twang and throb that just can't be denied. As a shambolic three-piece
with Messthetically-pleasing loose ends sticking out from all
sides, The Whines have that careless candor in their songs that
proves to be that magical touch that so many other bands lack
in their recordings. One of the many trappings most minimalist
female-fronted modern bands get stuck with is the all-encompassing
Kleenex/Liliput comparison, and despite being partially accurate
on quite a few instances, it really can be chalked up to lazy
journalism. The Whines effectively break free of this typical
reference point, and have emerged with this debut 7" full
of atypical song styles ranging from the distilled Velvet Underground
ambiance on the title track, to the impeccably addictive innocent
toe-curling guitar tones on 'Indian Homewrecker,' and pull it
all together with a refreshing nonchalance that reiterates the
serious potential this band has going.

Wreckery, The
Past Imperfect [retrospective reissue]
PS, AUSTRALIA Melbourne 5-piece The Wreckery were one of the
most popular Australian underground acts of the 1980s. They
played a darkly-hued, twisted form of gothic blues, and were
greatly influenced by The Birthday Party -- a band with which
they were to develop several future connections. This double
CD features 24 key tracks selected from the band's large recorded
output. All tracks have been completely remastered and are presented
here in a deluxe gatefold card wallet with a 24-page booklet
stuffed with photographs, artwork and entertaining liner-notes
penned by band leader Hugo Race. Hugo Race was a founding member
of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds and has been based in Europe since
1990, where he pursues a successful solo career and is currently
signed to Glitterhouse Records. Guitarist Ed Clayton-Jones has
also performed with the Bad Seeds and collaborated with Nick
Cave and Mick Harvey on the soundtrack to And The Ass Saw The
Angel. Along with The Birthday Party, (and its many offshoots),
The Scientists and Beasts Of Bourbon, The Wreckery helped pioneer
the particularly Australian, "dirty-alternative blues"
sound made popular again in recent years by other Australians
like The Drones, The Stabs, The Devastations, Kill Devil Hills
& Penny Ikinger.

A Certain Ratio
Force (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 23RD)
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce an expanded CD re-release of
the classic fifth album by iconic post-punk funk outfit A Certain
Ratio, originally released by Factory Records in November 1986.
Described by drummer Donald Johnson as "the Mike Tyson
of funk", Force marked a convincing return to form for
Ratio, mixing the robust funk grooves of single Mickey Way with
down tempo tracks, as well as Si Firmi O Grido, the percussive
tour de force which provides a reliable climax to live performances.
In addition to pin-sharp rhythm and groove the album also displayed
real consistency, and even a pop sensibility, courtesy of guest
vocalist Corinne Drewery of Swing Out Sister. The album was
also one of the first to utilize the brand new Akai S900 sampler.
Force reached #2 on the indie album chart, buoyed by excellent
reviews. "Force is bright, brilliant and hard as nails,"
wrote NME. "From the stop-watch bass and drums of Mickey
Way to the startlingly optimistic snap and crackle of Only Together
and Bootsy, Force almost dispenses with the expected melancholy
and puts some of the euphoria of the funk to work." Melody
Maker were equally impressed. "Ratio have jerked from their
sleeves a fine pop record. Force is bright, tight, tense and
coherent; a glorious achievement." On this remastered and
expanded CD, no less than five bonus tracks have been added
to the original eight on the album. These include flipside tracks
from single Mickey Way, an ultra rare remix of Bootsy by Robert
Racic (previously only available though Factory Australasia)
and The Runner, issued on a limited edition Italian EP. ACR
continue to gig and record, with 2009 album Mind Made Up scheduled

Songs Of Praise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 9TH)
PS, US Led by percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, African Head
Charge formed in the early 80s and, under a shifting lineup,
have released seven albums of afrocentric dub psychedelia, most
of which have been produced by Adrian Sherwood and released
on his On-U Sound label. As a precursor to the imminent release
of their long-awaited new album Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa,
AHC and On-U present a new reissue of Songs Of Praise, which
was originally released in 1991 and has been out of print for
the better part of five years. Regarded by many as the band's
crowning moment, Songs Of Praise was always one of On-U's best
and most consistent selling titles, and remains as much in demand
today as when it first appeared.

A Chorus Of Storytellers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 2ND)
PS, US A Chorus of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock
in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio just
outside of Seattle. It was mixed in the decidedly warmer month
of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson (of Sigur
Ros). For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded
as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed
by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle.
This time the whole band was invited to participate and the
result is their best record yet.

Close Calls With Brick Walls/Mother Of Mankind (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE
FEBRUARY 23RD)
PS, US New York, NY - (November 2009) - After three years of
loyal patience, ANDREW W.K. fans can finally experience the
"lost? third album from the established party rocker. Previously
released in Japan and Korea in 2006, CLOSE CALLS WITH BRICK
WALLS will officially be-come available in the United States
on February 23, 2010, being released by STEEV MIKE, as a special
two album package (the original CLOSE CALLS WITH BRICK WALLS
on one disc, and an additional CD called MOTHER OF MANKIND,
containing rare and unreleased mate-rial). After the recent
release of 55 CADILLAC - a compilation of improvised solo piano
compositions - CLOSE CALLS WITH BRICK WALLS / MOTHER OF MANKIND
deliver the slamming, inspirational music for which Andrew W.K.
is loved, coupled with new sounds and feelings rarely associated
with his traditional work. Close Calls With Brick Walls was
recorded in multiple sessions throughout 2004 and 2005, using
the full Andrew W.K. touring band for the first time. With a
full instrumental band, the new album includes exciting new
performances, styles, and rhythms. The lyrics are more complex
although still very playful, and Andrew?s voice has grown into
something much more distinct and expressive.

Another Electronic Musician
States Of Space (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 9TH)
PS, US States of Space is the new album from Jase Rex's 'Another
Electronic Musician' project and his 4th full-length for the
n5MD imprint. The album gets its title from the physiological
effects of his mental state during an emotionally difficult
time. It also alludes to how his perception of his environment
shaped his thoughts. Rex has sidestepped any stylistic expectations
from his previous album, Five, by changing his working environment
with the introduction of hardware into what previously was a
strictly software based creative process. This more tactile
way of working has given Rex room to let the songs breathe more
than before and an almost 'less is more' ethos has crept into
his music that also implies the album's title. Although this
approach may seem more minimalist on paper, it has not at all
affected the production, melodicism or density of the Another
Electronic Musician sound.

Bardo Pond
Bufo Alvarius [expanded reissue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY
2ND)
PS, UK Fire presents as part of their Fire Records Embers series
a deluxe remastered reissue of Bardo Pond's first album, Bufo
Alvarius, originally released on Drunken Fish in 1995. Bardo
Pond is a wide-eyed Philadelphian psychedelic rock unit that
exists as a shining point on a graph. A scintillating cross
drawn on a celestial arc, marking their place among the 13th
Floor Elevators, Calico Wall, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine,
and, more recently, Jackie-O Motherfucker and MV & EE. Explicitly
narcotic -- there's no room for coyness or prissiness in space
rock! -- the band was initially an excuse for abyssal guitar
drone exploration by brothers Michael and John Gibbons. But
Bufo Alvarius (named after a potently hallucinogenic toad),
their classic 1995 album, marked an important turning point.
It was like the flickering cine-8 film of someone falling off
a cliff played backwards. A hazy figure leaping out of the void,
pausing at the second their foot touched terra firma. It was
the juncture where their music clarified out of chaos and started
to coalesce around formations of post-rock, shoegaze and psych
structure while always threatening to dissolve into a blizzard
of reverb, white noise, fuzz drone and echoplex. This was the
album that saw them graduate from cult local concern to cult
global passion, stepping out from the monolithic shadows cast
by their influences. It is difficult to pick out individual
high points on something so clearly designed to be listened
to as a whole, but the lysergic ebb and flow of "Capillary
River," the aqueous beauty of "Absence" and,
of course, the half-hour long centerpiece of "Amen"
demand full attention from the listener. The previously-unreleased
"Fixed" rounds off an album that is transcendent in
all the right meanings of the word.

Beck, Thavius
Dialogue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US On Dialogue, his third full-length for Mush Records,
Thavius Beck continues to push the boundaries of hip-hop beat
making, grounding lo-fi digital drum kits in icy layers of synths
and sliced up samples. Fresh off of production duties on Saul
Williams' Niggy Tardust album with Trent Reznor, Beck's work
on Dialogue is razor sharp. This release also finds Thavius
spending more time in front of the mic, delivering the type
of rhymes that originally gained him notoriety as a member of
Global Phlowtations. The consummate iconoclast, Beck cleverly
critiques many of America's ills with a dry, satirical wit that
never falls into preechiness. With each passing release, Thavius
Beck continues to prove that the only musical boundaries he
sees are ones he has already left behind. Composer of mercurial
soundtracks for uncertain times, Thavius Beck conjoins various
strains of electronic music to arrive at a daringly ambitious
sound. He has received recognition in The Wire, Spin, and Urb
for his solo releases under the moniker Adlib, the Labwaste
project with fellow LA artist Subtitle, his recent production
for fellow Mush artist K-The-I???, his early work with Global
Phlowtations, numerous guest appearances, and producing alongside
Trent Reznor for and touring in support of and accompanying
Saul Williams. An exceptional programmer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist,
Thavius Beck's many talents allow him to take a song from idea
to completion without ever having to leave his cluttered studio.
Uncompromising vision and an ear for the unusual are staples
of this writer/producer's work.

PS, US Originally released in 1996 now reissued on "a records"
Anton Newcombe's own record label with new artwork . Truth in
advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album
does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated
1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not
only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their
their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant
"All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide
to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic,
drug-fueled freakout - like the Stones' namesake album, Second
Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents,
each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars,
mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels.
Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on
the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely
retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish - the Stones themselves
haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

group resurrected psychedelic-era excesses on the previous Their
Satanic Majesties' Second Request, here they jump further back
in time to the Stones' mid-'60s period, with even more superlative
results. From the opening "Vacuum Boots" onward, Take
It From the Man! is gritty, swaggering R&B-influenced rock,
delivered with remarkable assurance and atti-tude; singer Anton
Newcombe is half madman and half shaman, and he commands each
delirious moment with absolute mastery, emerging not so much
a disciple of Mick Jagger but as a serious threat to the throne.

In
late 2002, Erik sent Nick Huntington (co-founder of Attacknine
Records and one half of the music group Freescha) five discs
of his personal recordings. Erik is a fan of Freescha's music,
and the discs were a gift, not meant for release to the public.
But thinking that it wasn't fair that he was the only one enjoying
these discs, that the music was too good, and that other people
should be enjoying them too, Nick asked Erik if he would allow
Attacknine to release it. The end result was Attacknine's 2004
release Hitori+Kaiso, which contained the majority of the music
on discs two and three. But nothing from the first disc of music
he sent was included in that collection. So here it is, "Night

electronic instrumentals swelling and buzzing neon highlights

Ceremony
Someday (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26th)
PS, US Before A Place To Bury Strangers there was Skywave, a
3-piece band from Fredericksburg, Virginia. Ollie left to move
to NYC and formed APTBS but John and Paul stayed behind and
continued on under the name of Ceremony. Their Killer Pimp LP
& CD "Rocket Fire" is due out early 2010 but it's
being preceded by a HOT 7" single for the song "Someday."
It's one of those songs that are so incredibly infectious numerous
people have already reported repeating it over and over and
over again! While there's no doubt comparisons to APTBS will
be made (they are friends and were in the same band, after all),
Ceremony are far more focused on making catchy pop tunes than
blowing out your eardrums or speakers. The 7" is limited
to 500 copies and has an exclusive B-side "Cracked Sun"
which will not be on the LP & CD.

Citay
Dream Get Together (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US Citay makes a joyous return on Dream Get Together, the
San Francisco cosmic wanderers' expansive third album. Many
of the touchstones from Citay's previous work remain intact
- flourishes of Led Zeppelin, Eno/Fripp, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd,
Popul Vuh and ELO can be heard throughout - but a newfound swagger
pushes Dream Get Together way over the top. Seldom has there
been a more obvious choice for an album-opener than "Careful
With That Hat," a song propelled by a deep groove and swing
that practically begs the listener to stand up and air-drum
wildly. The vocals soar, the lead guitars catch fire and the
mammoth solo (courtesy of guitarist Josh Pollock) builds to
an ecstatic explosion. This is the shot across the bow. Citay
have arrived on Dream Get Together. Led by songwriter Ezra Feinberg,
Citay has made a career out of studio exploration, recalling
a time when studio excess was the norm. Producer Tim Green,
of the Fucking Champs, is no stranger to sonic indulgence, and
together Feinberg and Green have woven together a musical tapestry
that is both heavy and sweet. In Citay, the metal leanings of
Green's band are replaced by an altogether different brand of
fantasy rock.Dream Get Together has an embroidered and epic
beauty that flies over the ocean while snuggling up to the ears.
Joining Feinberg in Citay is drummerWarren Huegel, whose
rhythmic sensibilities are best exemplified not only by his
thunderous beats, but also his percussion decorations that lift
the Citay sound from the ground up. Flanking Feinberg's acoustic
six string live are the electric guitars of Sean Smith and Josh
Pollock. Bassist Diego Gonzalez holds it all together throughout.
Feinberg shares vocal duties on Dream Get Together with Tahlia
Harbour and Meryl Press, whose sweet, soaring voices play the
perfect foil to the bombast. One of many highlights of Dream
Get Together is "Mirror Kisses," a song Feinberg wrote
specifically for guest vocalist Merrill Garbus (of Tune-Yards)
to sing in three-part harmony with Harbour and Press of Citay. With
the soaring Ebow guitars and vocal harmonies, "Mirror Kisses"
is Citay at its most lush and melodic. In contrast, "Hunter"
is Citay at its most excessive - a triumphant instrumental anthem
that somehow bridges the gap between Klaus Schulze and The Scorpions. With
a spaced-out synth solo by Josh Robinow of Howlin' Rain, "Hunter"
is a majestic ride. Dream Get Together closes with a gorgeous
rendition of Galaxie 500's "Tugboat," in which Citay
replaces the reverb-y electric guitars with clean acoustic strumming
and Fripp-ed out sonics, preserving the beauty of the original
while making the song their own.

To Realize (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US After two woozy, psychedelic, and often-claustrophobic
records that touched upon their great potential (2006's Preyers
EP and 2007's Hoarse Lords), the Oakland-based Clipd Beaks have
birthed something pretty damn amazing. 'To Realize' is a turning-point.
A record of personal and artistic growth. Sonically expansive,
lyrically profound, and deeply moving. It recalls the societal
hangover depicted in the great California rock records of the
early 70's, while sitting firmly in the noisy, chaotic present
day. It's a tribute to love, to moving forward, to rejecting
doom.

Connors, Loren & Darin Gray
The Lost Mariner: 10 Year Anniversary [reissue] (PRE-ORDER:
SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US Just past 10 years ago this debut collaboration between
primitive American blues guitarist Loren Connors and the confounding
electric bassist Darin Gray was issued on CD. The Lost Mariner
was the first in a pair of releases by the upstart Family Vineyard
label. Now with a decade of hindsight and a nod to looking ahead,
here is a 700 edition LP reissue of the studio session considered
by Connors to be one of his finest. Since this album's 1999
release Connors has released a series of sorrowful solo albums
and multi-disc collections on Family Vineyard while Gray formed
the cinematic On Fillmore (with Wilco's Glen Kotche) and continued
collaborations with Jim O'Rourke, Akira Sakata, Chris Corsano
and others. The Lost Mariner is an improvised dialogue between
these two musicians. Structure is there, but it roams as it
sways, constantly adjusting and reinventing itself as the two
react to its mysterious design. For this reissue the LP is sleeved
inside stunning cover art (an Albert Pinkham Ryder painting)
and contains the bonus At The Old Factory 7-inch. This raw,
live snapshot of a 1999 performance comes on colored vinyl in
a full-color sleeve designed by Katie Leming (Cro-Magnon, Bird).

Dunn, Kyle Bobby
A Young Person's Guide To (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 2ND)
PS, UK Spread across two CDs with a total running time of nearly
two hours, A Young Persons Guide To... is a stunning collection
of recordings from New York based minimalist composer and sound
artist Kyle Bobby Dunn. Four tracks on the first disc originally
appeared as the download only album Fervency, released by the
Moodgadget label in 2009. Impressed by Dunn's sensitive and
world-wise compositions, it was felt that the music deserved
to be released on a physical format and expanded upon with a
second disc containing an additional 60 minutes of music gathered
from the same period as the Fervency recordings. Utilizing an
instrumental palette of guitar, strings and brass, often played
by classically trained musicians drafted in on the spur of the
moment, the sounds of these sessions were recorded as Dunn dictated
and then reworked via computer processing into spine-tingling
sounds capes. Dunn's compositions here are fully rich in timbre,
painterly, hopelessly romantic and haunting; balanced between
a wash of pure sound and an ornate yet subtle dance of classical
instrumentation. Occupying a truly cinematic scope, these pieces
can transport the listener from the deepest and most forgotten
landscapes to the furthest recesses of time.

Durutti Column, The
Paean to Wilson (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26th)
PS, UK Paean to Wilson is arguably Vini Reilly and the Durutti
Columns most important and consistent piece of work since the
demise of the original and seminal Factory Records in the early
1990â€(tm)s. Manchester International Festival of
Music commissioned it, for their festival in July 2009. Vini
had already composed pieces for Tony to listen to whilst he
was ill in hospital and it was from here that the project developed.
"Near the beginning of the final night of the Durutti Column's
70-minute international festival tribute to Tony Wilson, A Paean
to Wilson, guitarist Vini Reilly announced that he wouldn't
be singing: "So you won't have to put up with my awful
voice and schoolboy lyrics." If Wilson were with us, he
would have chuckled. The Granada presenter-turned-Factory Records
boss spent years urging his first signing to stop singing, and
concentrate on the virtuosity that led Red Hot Chili Pepper
John Frusciante to call Reilly "the greatest guitarist
in the world". Two years after his death, Wilson got his
way, one of many lovely touches in a very personal, emotional
and often warmly funny musical tribute. Wilson signed Joy Division
and Happy Mondays, yet never gave up on this cult band he adored,
working with them even after his legendary label went bankrupt.
A complex man, Wilson was an academic thinker who reveled in
Steve Coogan's affectionate, Alan Partridge-style send-up of
him as a "twat". And this tribute was no different.
At one point, Reilly - known for melancholy - launched into
something resembling an Irish jig. "Tony loved to laugh,"
he explained. "He loved absurdities." After the humour
came exquisitely mournful music. With Reilly and drummer Bruce
Mitchell augmented by bass, keyboard, violin, electric piano,
drum machine and trumpet, the band's beautiful pieces reflected
Wilson's love of rock and classical. Reilly's plangent guitar
work showed grief's emotional spectrum, from sadness to overdriven
anger. As in life, Wilson had the last word, his recorded voice
expounding thoughts on socialism with an eerie echo. Silence
followed as Manchester pondered the loss of one of its truly
larger-than-life characters. Then everybody cheered." The
bonus disc first appeared in 2005 via Wilson's project F4, as
being the fourth version of Factory Records. Originally it was
download-only release, Heaven Sent (It Was Called Digital, It
Was Heaven Sent). This is the first time that it has appeared
on a physical format. It was a six track CD of personal dedications
by Vini ironically the last piece being Anthony. Ever critical
of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the
late Tony Wilson would surely appreciate this instrumental tribute
by The Durutti Column. We have consciously chosen the release
date as 24th January marking the 32nd anniversary of the day
Factory Records formed in 1978. Their publishing company was
m24j - movement of the twenty fourth of January. Two showcase
live dates have been confirmed at the time of writing: 24/01/10

Welcome Stranger (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 17TH)
PS, US Ent is the solo musical project of Atsushi Horie who
hails from Nagasaki in the south of Japan. Horie's main gig
is of frontman of the BritPop influenced band STRAIGHTENER (EMI)
that has a devoted and somewhat large following in their native
Japan. However, Atsushi became attracted to Leftfield electronics
and Post-rock which led him to start writing a solo album in
2006 that infused more of those genres' elements in an effort
to make something more personal and deeply sentimental. Three
years in the making this first album "Welcome Stranger"
is a lush album of wide-eyed and unapologetic left of center
pop somewhere between The Album Leaf and The Postal Service.
Atsushi has succeeded in crafting an album that utilizes his
newer influences with the more traditional style of song-craft
his band STRAIGHTENER is known for. "Welcome Stranger"

Gang Gang Dance
God's Money (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US "God's Money is an album of whims and metamorphoses...thoroughly
enveloping, with a mesmerizing, vertiginous charm." - New
York Times "God's Money never suspends movement: It continues
to pulse and breath even in its quietest moments. And in each
piece, there exists an amazing freeform beauty as well as a
great sense of rhythm and melody hidden within ostensible chaos.
" - Pitchfork We are pleased to offer Gang Gang Dance's
landmark second studio album on LP again. Originally released
in 2005 the record originally only received a limited pressing
on vinyl and has been unavailable on LP for several years. With
God's MoneyGang Gang Dance created a modern sound which reorientated
the palette of electronic music into an organic context; manipulating
sound, rhythm and melody in an almost mercurial manner. Painstakingly
recorded over the course of 2004 at Junkyard Audio Salvage,
the band utilized whatever means were available to them to craft
their sound: drums of all shapes, sizes and circuits, various
keyboards occasional aluminum chair. Blending their hypnotic
rhythms into a highly structured compositional style or soaring
in the lofty heights of practiced improvisation, this record
follows in the footsteps of the bands previous output, simultaneously
marking new ground, and pointing to their future musical directions.
During writing and recording God's Money the band were playing
to packed houses in NYC, Europe and it with such a heightened
level of musicianship they turned even the most casual of spectators
into full on believers. God's Money is a pinnacle of Gang Gang
Dance's uncompromising sonic pursuit which has spanned the better
part of their now near ten year history. Some of this can be
gleamed from previous groups the God's Money may be interpreted
as the band's high-water mark of sorts it is much more the raising
of the tide as they continued to push the boundaries of the
palette of sound itself with no sign of waning.

Maintenant (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US Gigi is the recording project of Vancouver-based songwriter
Nick Krgovich and producer/engineer Colin Stewart. In the spring
of 2005 Stewart acquired two huge vintage plate reverbs and,
eager to use them in a way that befit their history, he asked
Krgovich to come up with a couple songs in the vein of classic
Phil Spector/Brill Building pop hits and invited a large group
of musician friends into the Hive Studios to record the songs
live-off-the-floor. The results of that night were amazing,
inspiring a string of
recording sessions that took place over the following 3 years,
collected here on Gigi's debut album Maintenant. Capturing the
spirit of the pop music that flooded the hit parade in the early
60's is a tall order, and the songs on Maintenant decidedly
develop a world and language of its own. With a reverent eye
on the past and a deep respect for the airtight songsmithery
of artists like Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Shadow Morton
(among countless others), the songs aren't content to be throwback-y
pastiches or polka-dotted retro workouts but rather stand as
attempts at working within a specific and incredibly rich tradition
of pop music production. There is something deeply satisfying
about bringing together a large group of singers and musicians,
cramming them into the studio, running through a song a couple
times and then hitting "record". The shape of the
songs forming on the fly and being coloured by the entire group,
the intent and heart of the song crystallizing as the tape rolls.
By the same token, the charming flubs and missed cues swirling
in a dense cloud of reverb revealing sublime harmonies, soaring
brass, and all the bells and whistles one might expect from
a Krgovich/Stewart helmed project. In addition to Stewart's
engineering and production credits on albums by Black Mountain,
Cave Singers and Destroyer, as well as, Krgovich's other groups
NO KIDS and P:ANO, GIGI has given the pair an opportunity to
unabashedly profess their love of pop music in the most direct
way conceivable, and this could not have been accomplished without
the talents of the many players and singers that graciously
helped out along the way. With singing contributions from artists
such as Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy, Mirah, Zac Pennington
of Parenthetical Girls, Katie Eastburn of Young People, Rose
Melberg and Karl Blau, the character studies in the songs are
voiced from wildly distinct positions giving the narratives
of lovesick loneliness, solitary walks around the neighbourhood
at twilight, and friday nights at home with parents watching
television in the front room, just that much more poignancy.
In the end, what began as a humble experiment four years ago
has ballooned into a pop extravaganza that will sit just as
comfortably next to your Back To Mono box set as it will your
rotary phone, waiting to ring.

Ginsberg, Pepi
East Is East (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 2ND)
PS, US In East is East, Pepi Ginsberg and her collaborators
step into the golden hour of the day and embrace "The most
ephemeral of seasons." A mood and a time where we "know
that change is coming in the form of a cool wind; we hold on
until we let go." The song 'Summer Sick as Love' accomplishes
this feeling, with its mythical descriptions of gutter punks
and wind ravaged stop-signs. Ginsberg, with arrangements expertly
handled by her band, creates a world with East is East, that
is "the season in between," and parts the waters,
navigating change in the sea of these strange times.

Guthrie, Robin
Sunflower Stories (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 23RD)
PS, US Limited edition of 1000. Digipak. Sunflower Stories is
third in a trilogy of EPs from master soundscaper Robin Guthrie
following Songs To Help My Children Sleep, released October
'09 and Angel Falls, released August '09. We have a few words
to describe these songs - uplifting, summery, opulent, dreamlike,
exquisite, moving - with Guthrie quietly coaxing beauty out
of layers of echoes and always inventive soundscaping. Given
the quality of the recent album and two EPs, it's not surprising
that as a guitarist and producer, Guthrie has been a massive
influence on everyone from My Bloody Valentine through to Antony
and the Johnsons, new 4 A.D. Act The Big Pink and M83.
In recent years he's worked with School Of Seven Bells, John
Foxx (Ulrich Schnauss, Harold Budd and shared a stage with Kevin
Shields (My Bloody Valentine). Most people know about his work
in the Cocteau Twins, but he's also produced Ian McCulloch,
Edwyn Collins and Felt, as well as defining the now vogue-ishly
fashionable early '90s shoegazing scene with his productions
for the likes of Lush and Chapterhouse. "...almost defies
gravity with totally compelling arrangement and more hooks than
a fisherman's tackle box" - Record Collector.

Hatakeyama, Chihei
A Long Journey (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26th)
PS, UK I first met Chihei at the Bellingham Electronic Arts
Festival in 2006. Its very fitting really because when I asked
him a bit about the background of the album, Chihei described
A Long Journey as follows: "An essential part of the album
are my experiences when I went to Bellingham and San Francisco
in 2006. I used field-recording material recorded in San Francisco.
"A Long Journey" is a metaphor for life, my image
of the journey of birth to death." Since I was a high-school
student I have been interested in the Shinto religion of Japan.
Shinto teaches us that everything has a spiritual essence (a
"Kami"). This loosely translates as a spirit, or god
even. There being a myriad of these Kami, they reside in everything
but some places are considered to have a more scared spirit
within them. Quite often these are rocks, rivers, trees, mountains
and other such calming natural places, hence why so many shrines
are built in such unique areas. Given the nature of A Long Journey,
even the track titles themselves, I am reminded of how I feel
when I visit these sacred places. Whilst people might not believe
in religion and its after-thoughts, there is something about
such places that creates a space within, a quiet space of peace
and calm. In the music and indeed the titles themselves, it
is this very feeling I get when I listen to A Long Journey.
Its very focused on its field recordings, but it also highlights
what a fabulously talented musician Chihei is, with very direct
guitar-based pieces, as well as gorgeous piano elements. That
it features the enormously talented (and future Home Normal
artist) Federico Durand, only highlights its beautiful mystery
(after all...Federico does much of his recording high up in
the mountains of his native Argentina).
It was a heavy snowfall the winter we met in Bellingham, and
we spent a few days together with good friends, enjoying the
misty seas, views and snow-covered tree dense walks just outside
the town. As Chihei made his way to San Francisco, it must have
been quite a continuation of this feeling, with San Francisco's
calming charm and gray misty views. The great thing about Kami
is that they are not limited to Japan of course, they are found
everywhere after all. If "A Long Journey" is a metaphor
for life, then it is a life of peace and tranquility, filled
with Kami, and that is not a bad journey at all. -- Ian Hawgood

Slow Films In Low Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 16TH)
PS, UK 'Slow Films In Low Light' is a collection of remixes
and re-workings by friends and artists from my now deleted album
'Soundtrack To A Film In My Head Which Will Never Get Made'.
The original album was released on the lovely Rope Swing Cities
but I decided I wanted it to be a temporary release given the
nature of the album. RSC and I decided to do a small release
to coincide with the original, as a limited run CD-R featuring
re-workings and remixes of the pieces by friends, namely The
Remote Viewer, Geskia!, Ten and Tracer and Pan Am Scan. Over
time it became apparent that this project needed to spread its
wings, and with lots of support from the lovely Yasuhiko Fukuzono
(Aus), and other close friends, I decided to ask more friends
to join in with the project. I'm so lucky that all the friends
I wanted and asked agreed to be involved, creating highly unique
pieces from the original sources (sometimes changing them completely).
As such I suddenly found myself with this amazing album, featuring
past, present and future Home Normal, Tokyo Droning and Nomadic
Kids Republic artists and good friends. As such, it's a really
nice review of where Home Normal is at in some ways I guess,
as well as highlighting where I am at musically too, albeit
through the voices of others who know me. One of the results
of these artists giving their time and enormous talents so freely
to this was that I decided that this release should be for charity.
In 1982 my father set up The Archway Foundation, a charity that
focused on helping those in various walks of life who are deeply
affected by loneliness. They hold weekly social events, organize
dinners, visits, drivers to take people to places and all sorts
of support work. I grew up attending and helping out the various
events, but have less to do with them after my parent's retirement
and my moving away from Oxford. In these difficult economical
times, charities, which rely on the donations of others, are
suffering terribly. But these people still need all the support
they can get, so I guess I just figure that, even if it's a
small level of support we can provide, at least we can try.
"We're born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through
our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment
that we're not alone." -- Orson Welles ALL the proceeds
from this release will go to The Archway Foundation (http://www..archwayfoundation.org.uk/),
a UK charity who serve those hurt by loneliness.

as well buzz making newcomers Tokyo Police Club, Pony Up! and

Home
Seventeen (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US Prologue (in which...)
Pianist Eric Morrison and guitarist Andrew Deutsch meet in a
performing arts high school in South Florida, and soon start
collaborating on camcorder movies. The two ramble around various
Floridian cities, moving from filmmaking to music. Eventually,
they land in Tampa where they meet bassist Brad Truax and drummer
Sean Martin and formally dub themselves Home (a nod to a fictional
band in a soap opera they were writing). As the recordings started
to pile up, they form a label/collective called Screw Music
Forever and begin to offer $1 cassettes at local record stores.
In a freak happenstance, one of these cassettes lands in the
lap of a Relativity Records A&R man, who soon rolls up smoking
large cigars and offering money for Home IX. After Home IX,
Sean gets a hold of some bad shellfish and disappears for 10
years. Home carries on, making six more albums. Then, Sean reemerges,
just as Brah Records befriends Home, with the notion of creating
a musical tribute to fucking, resulting in Home's first Brah
release, Sexteen. Phase I (in which...) The Home boys, in post-coital
bliss return from traveling the land (metaphorically) having
spent their wad on Home Sexteen and begin to envision an Alternate
Reality (heretofore notated as "AR") from which to
begin writing Home XVII. The basic story arc finds each member's
life so suddenly destroyed that they are forced to all move
back into a communal living space to start over and retreat
to the poprock origins of their genesis. Par exemplar: A) Andrew
returns home to find his entire apartment building decimated
and all physical manifestations of his identity completely erased.
B) Eric is excommunicated by his wife when she discovers he
is a crossdresser and he embarks on a sweet but ill-conceived
plan to win her back by exploding the sun on her birthday. C)
Chris discovers that his lover is an android of unknown design
and motive. etc./etc. Home converges in the Devils IsleWetLab
Studio and records the skeleton tracks of Home XVII. Phase II
(in which...) The Actual Reality (heretofore notated as "AR")
Home embarks on a leisurely summer of overdubbery, during which
they decide to tackle the long-overdue task of digitizing and
mastering their first eight albums which have dangerously oxidized
in a Makers Mark wooden box for nearly 15 years. Somewhere in
analyzing these early recordings, Home becomes re-interested
in the sound of songs in their genesis; the (wholley) imperfect
object that is felt but not yet processed. Phase III (in which...)
Each member of (AR) Home is cast about to their individual places
of comfort to record their pressing concerns. The carefully
crafted uber-story abandoned for passing fancy. The MS-16 fullness
for the redline compression of a 4-track.When they reconvene,
they sort through some 60+ songs to file down to the "new"
Home XVII, a scattershot sampling of moments and perspectives
that somewhat awkwardly
leaves archeological traces of cross-dressing and identity destruction.

Infinite Body
Carve Out The Face Of My God (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US Kyle Parker, better known as Infinite Body, is no stranger.
He burrows deep inside what a song is, how to strip down something
so far to where it just becomes two things, sound and feeling.
Infinite Body started in August 2007, after performing and collaborating
within the land of LA's harsh noise world (Haircut Mountain
Transit, Gator Surprise, Men Who Can't Love). After years of
making "Harsh" sounds with the other groups, Kyle
started Infinite Body to encompass all things beautiful and
began performing and recording this new project. On record,
at times it can be hypnotizing and emotionally charging, other
times it inspires you to think about life and drift off. Live
it takes another form, learning the ropes from the noise world
Infinite Body sets out to bliss out your mind, soul and ears
by taking over your senses (he plays LOUD and he has a lot of
lights that warp and dance with the music). It becomes an extremely
vibrating, beautiful, and rewarding experiment. Infinite Body
has toured with No Age two times, and was one of the openers
on the "No Dearhunter Tour" (Dan Deacon, Deerhunter
and No Age's collaborative round robin tour). After a self released
CD titled "White Hymn", which has won over many listeners,
and a few limited 12"s, Infinite Body recorded "Carve
Out The Face Of My God" for PPM. It is a step in a new
direction with swells, peaks, and valleys of ethereal noise
and field recordings arranged for Infinite body's extreme contextual
mind. This vaporous and concise recording effort marks Infinite
Body's transition into deeper waters and opening up to the world
around him. Feel free to write PPM HQ with any questions concerns
or comments, this is definitely a record worth owning for multiple
occasions and is intended for the realness of yourself.

Interference
Viva La Interference (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US In recent years there has been no shortage of people
trying to shine a light on the Downtown NYC music scene of the
early 1980s. A redrafting has occurred with each book or box
set, with a cast list being based upon whatever hope it at least
challenges the convention, adding Interference to that list
and suggesting that revisionists might have left a few stones
unturned. Forming out of the musical insurgence that was the
NoiseFest at White Columns Gallery in 1981; Interference Anne
DeMaranis,David Linton and Michael Brown. DeMaranis had just
parted ways with an early incarnation of Sonic Youth and co-curated
the NoiseFest with . Linton had headed to NYC a few years earlier
with then school/band mate Lee Renaldo, eventually hooking up
with Rhys Chatham for a three year stretch. Brown, then a twenty
six year old PhD candidate at NYU, had recently broke rank with
Rhys Chatham and drafted a wholly unconventional percussive
approach to the fender bass. From their inception through their
eventual fragmentation 30 months later, Interference charted
their course across the stages available to them: CBGB's, ,
etc., ultimately swelling to a quartet with the addition of
fellow Rhys Chatham veteran Joe Dizney. In 1982 they recorded
this LP at Radio City, engineered by and with guest appearances
by Elliot Sharp and . Originally slated for release on Josh
Baer and Glen Branca's legendary Neutral records, the record
has remained unreleased, aside from a scant number of self-released
cassettes. After the bands demise, Linton remained entrenched
in the New York underground art and music scene, through involvement
with , , and Soundlab, which lead him to the early 21st century
downtown electronic scene. It was from here that David recruited
the remixers which make up the forward thinking companion LP
of this release: David Last,Doily and Criterion (Brooklyn Beats),
Binsang AKA Toshio Kajiwara (Phenomena), QPE (Agriculture) and
the 8-bit Gameboy tag team of Bubblyfish & glomag. is pleased
to present the music of Interference

Jailbreak
The Rocker (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26TH)
PS, US Jailbreak is the duo of pedal steel/vocalist Heather
Leigh and drummer Chris Corsano. The name foregrounds the kind
of outlaw violence with which the two reformulate rock/roll
instants by bringing free jazz fire power to amp-humping sex
beats. Their musical alliance goes all the way back to the legendary
Brattleboro Free Folk Fest, the birthplace of the 'New Weird
America', where Corsano and his long-term saxophone partner
Paul Flaherty joined Leigh and Christina Carter for a quartet
show that took the roof off the building and the skin off their
fingers. Since then Corsano and Leigh have worked together as
part of Taurpis Tula and as members of Thurston Moore's Dream/Aktion
Unit. Jailbreak play improvised music that dispenses with traditional
notions of call and response or dialogue in favour of a profound
simultaneity that would birth instant forms from the application
of high energy strategies. Leigh's steel mainlines sanctified
slide guitar sources and deforms them with overdriven electricity,
playing a form of future-blues exploded by super-charged currents.
Corsano detonates time, literally blows it to pieces, in favour
of a profound polyrhythmic feel that would confuse past and
future. Yet the whole thing rocks like it hasn't a braincell
to spare, re-connecting avant garde tactics and ass-whooping
rama-lama with alla the revolutionary fanfare of the most radical
counter-cultural two-chord punk. 700 edition LP. "For those
of you who've been worried that the Free Power Noize scene has
become a little too tame, (and seriously who isn't somewhat
concerned about that), a new screamin' creamin' duo - Jailbreak
- expoldes to the rescue. The Rocker is a blast-furnace of blisteringly
joyous witch-howling assaults on the essence of whips and chains
and repressive injustice gone legal. Both of these magisterial
musicians are capable of extreme dynamics and subtleties, but
those concepts don't get in the way of this monster-truck of
a record. And why should they when drums and guitar can slash
and burn in a riotous electric smash fest like this crazed merry
madcap of an album. Over the top . . . Way!" - Paul Flaherty,

Konntinent
Opal Island (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 19th)
PS, UK Among many obvious definitions of the "heart"
is this: "the vital center and source of one's being, emotions,
and sensibilities." It's the first word I think of when
I hear the work of Antony Harrison (the man behind the Konntinent
moniker). And when you listen to his work, its really obvious
why. The Konntinent sound is very much based on microelements
I guess, at least this time around. Unlike his earlier drone-based
work, "Opal Island" has much more of Antony's guitar
playing to the fore, as it does the gorgeous vocals of Lisa
Madisson on "Dry eyed" as well as Antony's own beautifully
subtle singing. It has odd rhythms coming in and out, piano,
weird glitchy sounds and tones I can't quite place. It's all
in the craftsmanship you see. Its very rare to come across an
artist who actually makes "songs" which can also be
defined as "pieces" - and as such his work is so hard
to place. All I am left to do is to go back to the image of
the heart. In Japan, there is a faux-English usage of the word,
made adjective...the Japanese say "heartful." Its
on billboards, products and people use it all the time. Its
basically used to describe something which is full of emotion
and induces said emotion in others. Whilst the word admittedly
does my head in when I am in Japan, in a nice and concise way
it covers my feelings for the music Antony Harrison creates.
Opal Island is a very "heartful" album, as Antony
is himself a very "heartful" artist and songsmith..
And whilst linguists will not initially thank me, after hearing
this record, you just might get what I mean. -- Ian Hawgood

and is the only one featured on all three tracks adding guitar,
sampler, and effects and editing to Birthday and Tegendraads.
On Clay he seems to control the controls. W stands for Wouter
van Weldhoven who also releases solo compositions. On Birthday
and Tegendraads he contributes tape recorders and melodica.
The collaborators, the recordings and the title of the release
fit perfectly together. Each track has a distinct and individual
approach and voice of it's own. Track 1 Birthday has an almost
static feel. Each sound seems to be frozen and locked in it
and layered over and over each other until new overtones shine
through the thick fog of sound creating an almost orchestral
density. Track 2 Clay has a more quiet beginning. The sense
of a voice fades in and takes over the piece. While the voice
changes in pitch the track opens up like wings spreading further
in the stereo field. After a peak the sounds slowly seem to
be crawling back and hiding in the speakers leaving the voice
on it's own again. Track 3 Tegendraads has a calming effect
which lets the listener lean back and breathe while the piano
notes drop randomly through the track like raindrops falling
from the sky at the end of a storm. A voice speaks to the listener
that has a soothing effect. The sounds and tones seem to stay
more in place not wanting to move forward or backward while
circling around and holding each other by the hand. A perfect
ending to a superb release! Drifts drifts (1) and drifts (2)
and drifts (3) and... SteinbrÃ1/4chel (www.synchron.ch).

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail.
A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to
an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical
collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both
musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange,"
as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands
and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic)
musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files.
In this case they decided to do something different and sent
each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional)
objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make
music with those objects and all as source materials. As the
titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano,
a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette
tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians
made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received,
and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds
and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek
this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was
a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration.
Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek,
lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek
in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as
work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux
Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007,
with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela,
Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording)
include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven,
Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick.
Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist
based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty
Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and
Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher
(A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound
installations, photographs and drawings have been presented
at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston,
TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney
Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years,
Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists

strictly speaking, are a duo. They're from Bristol, England.
They aren't part of a scene, but they reflect the Bristol vibe
these days: groups with dubstep running through their bones,
hip hop in the fingers, '60s psychedelia in the heart. At times,
the album sounds like a Jamaican garage rock band. Other time
it sounds like Merseybeat if the beats were supplied by RZA.

Mazzy Star
So Tonight That I Might See (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 16TH)
PS, US 2nd album, originally released in 1993. Thanks to the
fluke hit "Fade Into You" -- one of the better beneficiaries
of alt-rock's radio prominence in the early '90s, a gentle descent
of a lead melody accompanied by piano, a steady beat, and above
all else, Hope Sandoval's lovely lead vocal -- Mazzy Star's
second album became something of a commercial success. All without
changing much at all from where the band was before -- David
Roback oversaw all the production, the core emphasis remained
a nexus point between country, folk, psych, and classic rock
all shrouded in mystery, and Sandoval's trademark drowsy drawl
remained swathed in echo. But grand as She Hangs Brightly was,
So Tonight That I Might See remains the group's undisputed high
point, mixing in plenty of variety among its tracks without
losing sight of what made the group so special to begin with.
Though many songs work with full arrangements like "Fade
Into You," a thick but never once overpowering combination,
two heavily stripped-down songs demonstrate in different ways
how Mazzy Star makes a virtue out of simplicity. "Mary
of Silence" is an organ-led slow shuffle that easily ranks
with the best of the Doors, strung-out and captivating all at
once, Sandoval's singing and Roback's careful acid soloing perfect
foils. "Wasted," meanwhile, revisits a classic blues
riff slowed down to near-soporific levels, but the snarling
crunch of Roback's guitar works wonders against Sandoval's vocals,
a careful balance that holds. If there's a left-field standout,
then unquestionably it's "Five String Serenade." A
cover of an Arthur Lee song -- for once not a Love-era number,
but a then-recent effort -- Roback's delicate acoustic guitar
effortlessly brings out its simple beauty. Tambourine and violin
add just enough to the arrangement here and there, and Sandoval's
calm singing makes for the icing on the cake. ~ Ned Raggett,

Mazzy Star
Among My Swan (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 16TH)
PS, US 3rd & final album, originally released in 1996. Having
built up a considerable reputation thanks to So Tonight That
I Might See, Mazzy Star reappeared after three years with Among
My Swan, only to receive widespread indifference. It's a touch
surprising -- unlike, say, fellow 1993 breakthroughs the Cranberries,
David Roback and Hope Sandoval didn't rapidly descend into self-parody
crossed with delusions of grandeur. Instead, they kept on keeping
on, proffering the same combination of psych, blues, folk, and
art-pop touches that made their earlier releases so captivating.
That said, though, at base Among My Swan just isn't as quietly
involving as the earlier records, that magical fusion of styles
somehow coming across as a little been-there, done-that here.
There's nothing quite as immediate as "Fade Into You,"
nothing as awesomely delicate as "Five String Serenade,"
as woozy and powerful as "Mary of Silence." There
are plenty of songs that try for that, though, and even if Among
My Swan won't raise the dead or heal the sick, it's still pleasant
enough listening, and sometimes the secret of success is in
the details. Keep an ear out for the soft chimes that punctuate
"Happy," for instance, or how William Reid from the
Jesus and Mary Chain's guest guitar helps turn "Take Everything"
into the slow-burning monster it is. Sandoval's singing is as
drowsily intoxicating as before, while Roback's ability to create
atmospheres is equally fine. Among the better moments: "Rhymes
of an Hour," which carefully balances a quieter arrangement
with sudden moments that almost but don't quite lead to a full-band
jam; the acoustic-based mood-out "All Your Sisters,"
suggesting such earlier guitar/violin efforts as "Into
Dust"; and the soft-landing conclusion, "Look On Down
From the Bridge," a bit of a church hymn in its own way,
thanks to the organ-led melody. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

in under two years, like Motorpsycho have done with "Little
Lucid Moments", "Child Of The Future" and now
"Heavy Metal Fruit". Together with Kåre Chr

it, why not? Jason has been with the Home Normal "project"
(as I initially termed it) since its inception. The early pieces
from Hiding Nature were with me at the end of 2008 and were
one of the main reasons for starting the label. He spent the
past year finalizing it and, I have to say (and I know I may
be biased here), I think this is his chef-d'oeuvre. The album
is obviously an Offthesky record, with its minute attention
to detail and its beautiful, often creeping, sometimes sporadic,
bursts of melody. Essentially Jason's plan was to make an album
of heavily processed vibraphone pieces, yet it became so much
more featuring clever use of warbly guitar tones and textures
throughout, and incredible haunting vocal arrangements on "Frozen
Fountain," for example. It ranges from the melodic brilliance
of "Hand Held Lightly" to the more experimental playfulness
of "Clockwort," from the guitar chords mixed with
bleeps of melody on "Little Subtle Secret" to the
delicately processed vibraphone of "Rest But Not Least."
Its a complete listening experience by one of the most talented
producers around today, an astonishing record and the most fun
I have heard in melodious experimentation in some time, maybe
ever. As Jason himself says, "Enjoy this with your nearest
breathing thing." And I have, and I will, again and again
and again and... -- Ian Hawgood

Oh No Ono
Eggs (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 26th)
PS, US Oh No Ono is an experimental pop quintet from the tiny
Danish town of Aalborg. Their music, intricate and otherworldly,
defies conventions and expectations (and sometimes gravity).
The ten dense, hypertextured sour-sweet-sad opuses found on
their US debut album, Eggs, are truly breathtaking to behold;
the band creates bewitching pop symphonies that unfold themselves
more with each successive listen.

electro-acoustic tomfoolery
& slot- machine soundcards, lies the break-NOT- core, bubble-gum
experimental turntablism of this new full-length from Italy's
own "Daft Giraffe.

them on top form once again, with the familiar accompaniment
of cello, acoustic guitar, drums and piano employed to great
effect on songs that incorporate Eastern-European folk themes,
bleak cinematic soundscapes and dark, unsettling pop.

and others? PPM is putting this 7" out because it sounds
like something we found... 'cause we did. We've never even seen
this guy play live, but the songs are top quality and just dark
enough to ask questions. Do Quail Lungs like Syd Barret and
large amounts of coffee? Do they like The Kinks enough to try
them with Morphine? How come we can't stop listening to the
A side "Dum Dadadum" and the B side "You Can't
Believe in Anything, You Can't Believe in Nothing"? Expect
more music and crafting, but maybe no more answers? Quail Lungs
for 2010 is a good look, get into it. Limited to 500 Copies.
