31Knots
Talk Like Blood
PS, US 31Knots know their Yes, and they know how to make Fugazi and Slint
sound exactly like Yes. This is John Anderson fronting Modest Mouse, and it works so well that 31Knots will be the flagship band when the term "prog pop" enters our lexicon. --Magnet

Adult.
Gimmie Trouble
PS, US ADULT. drop their first Thrill Jockey full-length after two excellent self-released albums. The duo of Nicola Kuperus (vocals) and Adam Lee Miller (bass, programming) has expanded into a trio with the addition of guitarist Sam Consiglio. This is a powerful new line-up that adds a new punk edge to
ADULT.'s dark alien grooves.

FatCat-011

$14.50

Animal Collective
Feels
PS, US Moving further away from the suggestion of folkish affinities, Feels is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, & overall a considerably denser work. Those sweet melodies & big catchy hooks remain intact, & the songwriting is once again bold, brave, adventurous & stamped w/ their own unique personality. Hugely inventive & tightly focused, it simply sounds like nothing else right now.

Barr
Beyond Reinforced
PS, US BRENDON FOWLER (NEW ENGLAND ROSES) comes into his own on this project. He has already made a name for himself in the performance art world. He toured with Tracy + the Plastics, The Quials & so on. He descibes this as sounding like Xiu Xiu on codeine & speed given by a motivational guru, perhaps

Bissonnette, Christopher
Periphery
PS, US A collection of piano & orchestral based material, recorded & produced over the past year. He developed a system of exclusion & reconstruction, using seconds of samples to produce extended textural edits. Audio patches are constructed with sets of randomized variables. Most tracks are mixed & recorded live, resulting in organic, sinuous compositions. These extended phases create a fragile balance of tension & atmospheric placidity. The results are introspective compositions; layered with delicate minutae, extended & immersive.

Bloc Party
Silent Alarm Remixed
PS, US Features remixes by friends, artists & associates of all the tracks on the bands debut album released earlier this year. Feat. LADYTRAN, JASON CLARK (PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES), M83, FOUR TET, AUTOMATO, MOGWAI, DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 & others.

Celebration
S/T
PS, US Celebration's 4AD debut was produced by David Sitek from TV On The Radio. He also contributed treated guitar parts and synth noises which, along with Martin Perna and Stewart Bogle's flute and saxparts, make for a record splashed with beguiling texture and sonic surprise. Other members of TV On The Radio made guest appearances as vocalists on various tracks. This collaborative mood is a signal of sorts; for all its starkness, its twitchy, raw-boned energy, and its unflinching focus, "Celebration" is an inclusive, even euphoric record. This is music that speaks of a primal thirst for life. And in dark times, that's a cause for celebration indeed.

Cerberus Shoal
Land We All Believe In
PS, US A sometimes political, sometimes humorous, sometimes spiritual amalgam of skewed pop, the offerings on The Land... catapult listeners through every possible shade of emotion within the environment of our present global situation while still appeasing the melodic & rhythmic desire of their ears.
NorthEastIndia-038

City on Film, The/Minus The Bear
Split
PS, US Following the demise of Braid and Hey Mercedes, frontman Bob Nanna is back with City on Film (Grand Theft Autumn), his latest full-time project. The song on this split is a remix by TheNotebook. Minus the Bear (Suicide Squeeze) recently released their second, highly anticipated, full-length Menos El Oso. The song on this split is a remix by IQU.

Clientele
Strange Geometry
PS, US London's purveyors of lush melodies and gorgeous, hazy pop are back with twelve new tracks of dreamy folk, shimmering psych guitars, and string arrangements. This is the band's third album to date, following 2003's "Violet Hour" and 2001's singles comp, "Suburban Light". "Aggressively, gratuitously lovely, modernizing the chambery charms of Love's 'Forever Changes', The Zombies, and Galaxie 500" - Spin.

15. Pacific Ocean Fire - My Drinking Days Are Done
16. Maria Taylor - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
17. Frank Black - Atlantis

Some CD insights:
12 of the tracks are exclusive to this release, the remaining 5 can be classified as "rare", "hard to find" or "sufficiently different to qualify as exclusive if we weren't so exacting in our definition of what constitutes 'previously unreleased' so as not to disappoint hardcore collectors." The Espers track also appears on the CD accompanying the June/July '05 edition of the US magazine, The Believer, in slightly edited form and The Picastro song featured on a very limited edition--and out of print--compilation on Canadian label Antiantenna Records. The American Analog Set track will appear in extended form on their forthcoming vinyl-only, tour-only EP and The Four Tet track was previously available on a split 7" --both tracks appear here on CD for the first time. David Eugene Edwards' track is sourced (and carefully re-mastered) from the 16HP DVD and the colleen track will feature on a 500 copy only limited edition CD from Staalplaat Records out in September. The CD includes 5 cover versions--Espers cover Fursaxa, David Eugene Edwards covers Bob Dylan, Laura Cantrell covers The Schramms, Maria Taylor covers Ewan McColl (although the song was most famously recorded by Roberta Flack back in 1972), and Frank Black covers Donovan. There are some impressive guests helping out on tracks by American Analog Set (Matt Pond on backing vocals), Vetiver (Hairy Fairy AKA Devendra Banhart and his band), Laura Cantrell (Calexico and friends) and Frank Black (musicians featured on his current album including Spooner Oldham, Anton Fig and Steve Cropper, plus a spoken word intro by political satirist / author / comedian Al Franken). Interviews: The American Analog Set, Frank Black, Richard Buckner, Laura Cantrell, colleen, David Eugene Edwards, Espers, Four Tet, Magnolia Electric Co., Marissa Nadler, Sleater-Kinney, Smog, Maria Taylor, Tremulous Monk, Laura Veirs, and Vetiver.

Constantines
Tournament Of Hearts
PS, US Toronto's Constantines return with their third Sub Pop release, a record made for the chaos of days. A physical record, the thunder of battles of love. Contrast
Forget To Tell The Time
PS, US Giftedsinger/songwriter/guitarist David Reid is both a songwriting machine & guitar virtuoso, backed by a pop driven band & popgem filled record. Forget to tell the time certainly ended up beingthe most fun & exciting record that the band has ever made. Lyrically, the title track is based on the idea that, although we areall spinning, out of control, through our lives we can make anythingwe want to happen if we just let go of our inhibitions & stop panicking.

Cray
Undo
PS, US Cray is the sound of digital dreams, soundtracks for other worlds, the dirt on the street magnified, nano technology music. "Undo" presents the adventurous listener with etched sound worlds; carved sine waves, slices of twisted time, but with a faint memory of melody. Influenced by both contemporary digital technology and early sound pioneers like Pierre Henry, David Tudor and Tod Dockstader.

Crunc Tesla
What's Really Rad?
PS, US A very, very long time ago, there was an emerging form of youth music that energized a generation. This EP revisits that era without drowning in nostalgia. The music, produced by Atlanta-bred, Brooklyn transplant DJ Raedawn, reunifies today's fractured rap and techno scenes. Simply put, it's a 23-minute kinetic energy burst along the lines of Outkast, Pharcyde, Squarepusher, and even Harry Bellafonte. Acid basslines, Gypsy organs and tweaked synths melt into grimy beats while creamy, rapid-fire lyrics flicker from dark to brilliant. The bipolar fusion of tones melds Middle Eastern melodies with dirty south drum kits, dancehall riddims and broke-beat glitchology. The vocalists bombard from all angles, with MCs hailing from Jamaica, Baltimore, D.C., Atlanta and New York. You might call this American grime or crunktech.

DDC
Death, Destruction & Chaos
PS, US While other so-called punk bands were too busy worrying about the latest fads & trends these boys were honing their sound & chops. Today they are a true killing machine! This debut CD sees the band playing homage to their roots & early influences. Best described as old-school punk meets 80s thrash with some avant-garde touches ala Butthole Surfers. Produced & recorded in the summer of 2003 but due to the band's procrastinating ways, lame ass distributors, & the planet's not being properly aligned it is just NOW seeing a proper release.

Deerhoof
Runners Four, The
PS, US Deerhoof play with a primal abandon and molten group chemistry that remains untamed since the band's early days. Still, at nearly twice the length of their previous albums, "The Runners Four" is more complex and challenging than anything they've recorded. This is more than rock; it's a wholesale rewrite of the rock and roll dictionary. Deerhoof herald the era of the defiant DIY album. The Runners Four: a quartet of racers, chasers, messengers, even smugglers, gleefully smashing through outmoded boundaries, bearing gifts of sonic contraband. This is Deerhoof's magnificent autobiography.

Dirty Three
Cinder
PS, US Unlike past recordings where the band tried to capture their live potential, this time they thought about how they might perform the songs later. As such, the tracks on "Cinder" are much shorter, trimmed down, and classic in composition. Sally Timms (Mekons) and Chan Marshall added guest vocals. "...the music pulls you into its deep blue moods, lifts you out, and leaves you cleansed" - Rolling Stone.

Drowningman
Don't Push Us When We're Hot

Duke, Andrew
Sprung
PS, US One of Canada's foremost techno/new electronic music sound-assemblers. He has been performing live and recording his own music since 1987. Sprung is organic, wet sounding techno that skitters along a range of frequencies, from scurrying subtleties to low pulsing rumbles, each brushing different areas of the sonic spectrum. "Sprung" was nominated for canadian album of the year (electronica) in 2003.

Early Man
Closing In
PS, US Two Pentecostalists from Columbus, shielded from pop culture their entire lives, discover rock at the age of 19. Kicked out by their families and ostracized by the population, their adopted kin are Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Celtic Frost, Metallica, and Slayer. Nurtured and warmed, they moved to
NYC and started a band whose elemental street thrash recalls a time before metal splintered into 54 micro-categories. "Unwieldy song titles + primordial stomp + Tolstoy-length guitar solos? Can't argue with that math!" - Decibel.

Kane, Jonathan
FEBRUARY
PS, US Jonathan Kane is a Downtown NYC legend -- as co-founder of the no-wave behemoth Swans, and the rhythmic thunder behind the massed-guitar armies of Rhys Chatham and the rock excursions of La Monte Young -- and one of the hardest-hitting drummers on the planet. With February, his first solo record, Kane summons Swans' concussive wallop, Chatham's dense guitar strata (Kane even manages a rollicking version of Chatham's notorious "Guitar Trio"), and the perpetual propulsion of 70s krautrockers Neu, then steers it all head-on into... the blues. Make no mistake about it: Kane is a bluesman, and beneath the high-decible bombast of these five instrumentals, he's powering guitar-driven minimalism into the blues, and the blues into guitar-driven harmonic maximalism. So roll with Jonathan Kane down his Highway 61 of the mind -- it's the shape of blues to come.

$13.50

Kirkwood, Curt
Snow
PS, US Solo debut from MEAT PUPPETS mastermind/guitar wizard who teams up w/ producer/guitarist PETE ANDERSON (Dwight Yoakum, Lucinda Williams) to help capture his vision that predictably melds rock, pop, folk, cowpunk & blues influences.

Koenjihyakkei
Angherr Shisspa
PS, US Headed by vocalist/composer/drummer extraordinaire Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Koenjihyakkei is Area & ELP at their most excessive, Deus Ex Machina w/ tempo changes multiplied by 100, & Magma at their Orff-ian choral, fusion jazz, overcharged gospel peak. Maybe that explains why advance listens have yielded head-scratching comments comparing Angherr Shisspa to Stereolab, Yes, Queen, Melt-Banana.

Lair Of The MInotaur
Cannibal Massacre
PS, US LTD 3" CD. Includes mpeg video for "The Wolf". LOTM combines the sounds of legendary old school metal bands like Celtic Frost, Venom & Slayer w/ the relentless bombast of High OnFire to create their crippling sound. It contains 2 brand new songs recorded by Sanford Parker & mastered by Pig Destroyer member Scott Hull.

Lambchop/Hands Off Cuba
Colab
PS, US So LAMBCHOP says to HANDS OFF CUBA (a semi-reclusive electronic duo from Nashville) that they were interested in putting together a short collaborative EP of LAMBCHOP recordings. The result is some new, beautiful, thoughtful music. It's not so much a new direction for them as it is an activity that the band has been involved in; a collaboration between artists from Nashville that is experimental in concept & nature.

Lucero
Dreaming In America (CD/DVD)
PS, US This CD and DVD, the latter by NY filmmaker Aaron Goldman, serve as an emotional testimony of a band that makes music because they love it, they're
compelled to, and their lives depend on it. Inspired by films like D.A. Pennebaker's classic "Don't Look Back", Jem Cohen's Fugazi documentary, "Instrument", and the highly acclaimed Wilco movie by Sam Jones, "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", "Dreaming In America" takes a brutally honest look at a brutally honest band. It documents Lucero's endless travels on the road, playing more than 250 shows a year and trying to find their home in an ever-changing music industry.

Magnolia Electric Co.
Hard to Love a Man
PS, US "Hard to Love a Man" is the first single from the debut full-length from The Magnolia Electric Co.'s What Comes After the Blues. This mini-album also includes four previously unreleased songs. "Working class rock" is a phrase used frequently to describe The Magnolia
Electric Co. Categorically, the band has secured their place amongst like minded icons such as Bob Seger, CCR, Tom Petty and Bruce
Springsteen, but it's not merely an aesthetic description. Magnolia back it up with their work ethic. This recording will be their third proper
release in 2005 - after Trials And Errors (Jan. 18) and What Comes After The Blues (April 15). Amazingly, The Magnolia Electric Co.
will have been on the road eight months by the year's end. This fact is most apparent to the band members themselves having been away
from their homes and their loved ones for such extended periods of time. Hence the significance of the title track. When Jason Molina
assumes the perspective of the one he left behind on "Hard To Love A Man" and sings: It was hard to love a man like you / Goodbye was half the words you knew / While you were waiting for me not to call / I sent my love." The loneliness and guilt of separation is painfully obvious. The wounded feminine voice of Jennie Benford, coupled with Jason Groth's sweeping guitar and Mike Kapinus' mournful organ dramatically reiterate this sentiment. Mark Rice and Pete Schreiner deliver their signature tight and tasteful rhythm and Nicole Evans adds a new and dynamic voice. While "Hard To Love A Man" and live set favorite, "Werewolves Of London" were recorded with Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studios, the rest of the tracks were recorded during a brief five day visit home in Indiana at Echo Park Studios with Paul Mahern whose engineering resume includes The Blake Babies, Lisa Germano and John Mellencamp. As we watch Magnolia grow, Jason Molina doesn't have to coach us through another one, letting the inmates run the asylum. The Magnolia Electric Co. cast no doubt by putting their business in the street.

Matt Pond PA
Several Arrows Later
PS, US "Several Arrows Later" represents the most immediate and rocking expression of Matt Pond PA's music yet. His lyrics push through the confusion of city life (a smaller sky, throttling expectations, and terrible parties) and the comfort of country life (the familiar, the green, and the seasons) - both asking and telling us why we act the way we do. But it's not a call to action; it's a plea against apathy. Musically, it shies away from the redundancy of present day rock posturing yet remains totally immediate, relevant, and ridiculously catchy.

McPhee, Joe/John Snyder
Pieces of Light
PS, US Reissue from 1974. "A six part construction of moods & impressions for electronic & acoustically produced sounds; a music of tone colors & textures to be experienced physically as well as aurally...The word 'light' in the title of this work has a dual connotation: it refers to radiant energy in the physical sense, & to truth in the spiritual sense; the truth for me being the personal discovery of a musical direction long sought."

Minsk
Out Of A Center Which Is Neither Dead Nor Alive
PS, US Minsk combines a sonic onslaught of dirge-like walls of doom & metal w/ Hawkwind & Jethro Tull inspired 1970's psychedelic rock & tribal elements reminiscent of Dead Can Dance. The vocals range from soulful singing, to barbaric screams & result is a dynamic & emotional piece of sensory overload that has been compared to Neurosis, Mastodon, Cult of Luna, Entombed, & Acid Bath. Recording w/ producer Sanford Parker (Pelican, Unearthly Trance, Lair of the Minotaur, Venomous Concept) at Volume Studios has yielded both a debut full length album & a new bass player in Parker (BURIED AT SEA). RECOMMENDED!!!

Minus Story
No Rest for Ghosts
PS, US If we could hear the angels singing about us, they would be in harmony with the chosen sons of Boonville,Missouri. With No Rest for Ghosts, their second full-length record for Jagjaguwar, Minus Story have arrived. Their heavenly racket shuffles, flutters, crashes and bangs all about us. Their reedy artistic voice nears multi-octave range. Their rhythmic presence delights us in a sublime collision of the conventional and the experimental. And while their trademarked "Wall of Crap" sound is still present to some degree, No Rest for Ghosts has transcended the earnest collage aesthetic of sounds battling it out for attention and now fully exhibits a depth and subtlety of performance not found on their critical darling The Captain Is Dead, Let the Drum Corpse Dance (their first full-length for Jagjaguwar, released in 2004). No Rest for Ghosts is a portal to a richly imaginative Minus Story universe, where the band sings about a narrator being eaten and regurgitated by his/her own baby in order to feed its own monstrous young, the chasing of a cloud that eats souls, the jumping off of a cliff like lemmings after employers are laid waste to, the dreaming of a Nazi invasion of their hometown, God sadistically laughing at them, and their respective minds being invaded by undead celebrities. The emphasis is on either structure over hooks, or the willingness to enjoy a story in words unfolding over a set of chords without any unnecessary "window dressing" getting in the way. Minus Story is influenced musically by the solo work of John Frusciante, the tenderness of Bjork, the melodic interplay of Television, and the directness of late period Tom Waits. The band is also conceptually influenced by the brutality of Jerzy Kosinski's The Painted Bird, the sweeping and ambivalent authoritarianism critique of Jason Lips (the provider of cartoon drawings for the album art, and the creator of the Opera and the Blond Stalin character), and most of all by the idea of the invisible enemy and the erosion of the soul by unknown outside forces.

PS, US These guys are becoming one of the most significant London bands to emerge in recent years. They are a disparate mish-mash of strong personalities, but while they may be endlessly entertaining as people, they could not be more serious as a musical proposition. Smithson, Dawn
Safer Here
PS, US Former JESSAMINE bassist & vocalist & recent SUNN O))) contributor, she returns after a 6 year hiatus with her new full length. Her bass held an anchoring position in Jessamine's swirl of rhythm & sounds & the band's musical explorations took shape around her distinct vocals. Incorporating experimental aspects of Jessamine's sound with acoustic elements & introspective songwriting, this album balances melody with experimentation to create rhythmic, non-ornate songs, constructing an album where every musical gesture carries weight.

Spaceheads/Max Eastley
The Time of The Ancient Astronaut
PS, US From the first sound a different and special magic was evoked, captured in one afternoon on this recording. Haunting trumpet melodies over soft drones and textures sets the mood. This slowly mutates to a world of high opera and tipsy beats that then cascades with a metallic pounding. The music takes on cinematic proportions as the terrain unfolds. Interstellar landscapes are revealed. MAX EASTLEY plays The Arc. A nine foot long mono chord. One string stretched over wood and played with a bow or glass rods. The pitch is changed by flexing the wood. The string can also be shortened with clips. It is then fed into electronic effects. SPACEHEADS are a duo mixing trumpet & electronics with drums and percussion. Plaintive trumpet calls are looped across pulsing beats that propel us into sheets of metal crashing and vibrating through tiny pick ups cranked to the full and then spun into electronic webs.

Verlaine, Tom
Warm And Cool
PS, US Tom Verlaine borrows his name from the 19th century French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine, and nowhere in his 20-year catalog does Tom's music more closely follow his namesake's poetic philosophy than on "Warm And Cool". Unlike most of his work, this one is entirely instrumental, with guitars often filling the traditional role of a voice in the melody. Originally released in 1992 in the wake of a short-lived Television reunion and the rise of Nirvana into a musical environment that clearly favored loud guitars and walls of sound. The sparse soundscapes on "Warm And Cool" represent a clear rebellion from that. Now the record is being re-issued in the midst of another Television reunion and a music scene overstuffed with Television wannabes. It was originally available in the '80s on Ryko, but has been out of print for over ten years.

Easily the best song of the year & a surefire hit at your next dance party. Sure it might fit in w/all your 80's brit pop singles but those bands are gone. Amandine
This Is Where Our Hearts Collide (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 18TH)
PS, UK Wonderful debut from Northern Sweden outfit Amandine. A collection of lush, atmospheric country and moonlight dappled folk. Formed in the Arctic Coast of Sweden (Umea) in 2001 under the name Wichita Linemen, Amandine are seemingly influenced and inspired by traditional American Folk music, and with a slightly more apparent leaning towards country/americana acts such as Songs:Ohia, Damien Jurado, Iron & Wine, and fellow Umea residents Isolation Years. Amandine nevertheless retain a keen sense of self, their songs perhaps reflecting more than anything a sense of rural space, a reflective ideology, and a natural leaning towards simply playing from the heart.

Antony And The Johnsons
You Are My Sister (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 25TH)
PS, US Antony & The Johnsons breakthrough album I Am A Bird Now has certainly touched fans and critics alike. His second full-length - released in February - stands as one of the most globally acclaimed albums of 2005. The album's latest single is the anthemic and heart-rending "You Are My Sister", presented as a duet between Antony and Boy George. Together these two vocalists climb to the highest peak of emotional vulnerability, providing for the listener one of the most touching and uncanny duets of the past decade. It's heartbreaking when Antony sings, "You are my sister / we were born / so innocent, so full of need / there were times we were friends / but times I was so cruel / at night I'd asked for to watch me as I sleep". With soaring and world-weary intensity, Boy George utterly commands the refrain: "You are my sister / and I love you / may all of your dreams come true." In "You Are My Sister," the pair sing from the depths of their hearts for the world. This extended single also includes three new, unreleased songs recorded during the I Am A Bird Now sessions. "Poorest Ear" is a harrowing and complex vision from the perspective of an alienated child. Responding perhaps to "You Are My Sister," Antony sings of a girl who wishes to save her imperiled brother in "Forest of Love." Finally, "Paddy's Gone" is a choral lament to long-lost man. These tracks all seem to support Antony's recent assertion; "Recently I have been imagining that we contain a family inside us... a mother, a father, a boy, a girl and a baby. I Am a Bird Now represents a dialogue between some of these figures."

S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 31ST)
PS, US The first of a three-album concept based around a body of over eighty songs written this year alone by Chicago-based musician CHARLES KIM (SINISTER LUCK ENSEMBLE/PERISHABLE, PINETOP SEVEN/TRUCKSTOP, PAN AMERICAN producer/Kranky) and is a more hopeful, song oriented cousin to his previous works. These songs were written, performed, and recorded in his home studio. Envision a collection of songs recorded underground through conversations deciphered through static and short wave, within the bounds of folk heroes long gone as well as more recent indie-rock troubadours, that conceptualizes the ambient atmosphere and rudimentary electronics of early EG records material. Combining minimalist electronic instrumentation, classic arrangements, and vocals that seem supernaturally transparent, "Where's My Love" is virtually autonomous, defying referential impulse. It's the sound of a million tiny shards of recognizable sound (Bjork, Joanna Newsom, Boards of Canada, Portishead, Lali Puna, Sigur Ros, and Aphex Twin, for starters), poured into a totally unique new mold. Conrad, Tony
Early Minimalism Vol. 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 25TH)
PS, US In 1962 Tony Conrad's amplified strings introduced the sustained drone of just-intonation into what came to be known as "minimal" music. Utilizing long durations and precise pitch, he and his collaborators forged an aggressively mesmerizing "Dream Music" - denying the activity of composition, elaborating shared ideas of performance, and articulating the Big Bang of "minimalism". However, the many rehearsal and performance recordings from this period were repressed, inaccessibly buried. In 1987 Conrad set out on a ten-year return expedition to the site of these entombed fragments; from them he reconstructed and regenerated the epic EARLY MINIMALISM. Reaching back through time, Tony Conrad weaves a mobile narrative over and under minimalism: making music out of history, and history out of music.

Dirty Faces
Super American (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 25TH)
PS, US The Dirty Faces thrive on contradiction as well as adversity. A series of personnel changes has seemingly only made them a stronger, more creative and more dedicated band. They are fiercely loyal to Pittsburgh, yet their guitar player lives in Brooklyn. Their live shows are noisy, messy affairs, but their albums contain surprising moments of quiet lucidity. While they are equally influenced by both American and British art punk (The Fall, Pere Ubu) and 1970's classic rock (Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top), along with (of course) a healthy admiration for the primal rock of Iggy & the Stooges, AC/DC and everything hip hop, they manage to boil these influences down into something at once recognizable yet wholly their own. Originally founded in 1997 by singer T Glitter as a way to set his lyrics to his idea of what punk rock meant back then, the band soon became known for their energetic, often confrontational live shows. Band lineups shifted, but core members Tricky Powers and Glitter have remained constants. Their first album, Covered in Lime (Rickety Records, 1998), was described by Index magazine as "classic Rust Belt punk, a frenzied take on drug use and crumbling relationships in a city where everybody knows everybody." The album made the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's year-end Top Albums list. In 2002 the band released their second album-the less conventional, more experimental More Lies (Rickety Records, 2002)-to favorable reviews, while the live shows maintained their scary nature.

As The Drift, Danny Grody (Tarentel, Furniture), Safa Shokrai, Jeff Jacobs, and Rich Douthit (Halifax Pier) comfortably expand on the cinematic bliss that Tarentel willfully abandoned long ago for more chaotic landscapes. Existing somewhere between Miles Davis's In A Silent Way and Tarentel's From Bone To Satellite, The Drift compose predestined soundtracks for everyday life - not only perfect for a night on the beach, but just as suitable for the long drive getting there. Earlies, The
These Were the Earlies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 25TH)
PS, US Produced on both sides of the Atlantic and with a palette of sounds almost as wide; The Earlies debut album These Were The Earlies brings together their first self released singles and subsequent EP's. Originally released in 2004 on Names/679 Recordings in the UK, Secretly Canadian is proud to present this gem to the long-deprived people of North America.

Working with manipulated performances by a collective of English and American musicians These Were The Earlies combines layered vocals with imaginary and more traditional instruments to produce a unique pop sound where sonic exploration can still take place. Residing in Northern England and Western Texas The Earlies are united by a shared love of The Band, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and The Beatles. All get a gracious nod on The Earlies debut album together with a unique mix of obscure psychedelic, progressive, leftfield and country influences. It's very apt that Brian Wilson has waited until recently to unveil his masterpiece Smile, it could be said The Earlies have provided us with the 21st Century equivalent. The variety of instrumental texture, layered harmonies and electronic tweaks - complete with a strong American lead vocal - could easily make The Earlies a Jason Pierce, Neil Young, and Phil Spector side project were they all decided to let their hair down and have a bit of fun for a change. Traversing some of the same territory inhabited by Deserter's Songs-era Mercury Rev and Olivia Tremor Control, The Earlies truly steer their own ship

Fiery Furnaces
Rehearsing My Choir (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 25TH)
PS, US Based, with liberal heaps of poetic license, around their 83 yr old grandmother. As they trade off on vocals, signaling quick shifts in time & perspecitve, the music barrels along at their heels, changing up instruments & arrangements to match the action. It largely takes place in mid-20th century Chicago & reflects how the average person's aspirations & experiences were different enough then to seem almost alien now.

Goblin Market
Haunted (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 31ST)
PS, US "Heavy...pure velvet-textured sheets of LSD hardbound for Victorian-library bookshelves."-Magnet. Longawaited second release by side project of GREEN PAJAMAS members JEFF KELLY & LAURA WELLER. Their debut release "Ghostland" garnered lavish praise for musically rendering the morbid & occult sexuality of the pre-Raphaelite movement, & their new release examines a current analog of this milieu for another mind-bending excursion into the themes of gothic literature. Features songs inspired by the novels & poetry of celebrated American author JOYCE CAROL OATES. Their mutual fascination with this prolific & masterful author & her uniquely dark vision resulted in this collection of songs, the source material for which mines a broad range of her work including lesser-known short stories, a novel under Oates' nom de plume, and poetry. The musical style blends alternative and folk-rock sensibilities with rich vocal harmonies. Prior exposure to Oates' work is not required for appreciation of the beauty & wonder which Kelly and Weller have achieved.
