Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Chad VanGaalen "Soft Airplane" CD $13.00 (Sub Pop)
O Canada, you have bequeathed upon us artiste, skateboardiste and bedroom/backyard recording savant Chad VanGaalen and we couldn’t be happier. Dude gets his Neil Young on and we get goosebumps; guy finds a fresh funky beat on his Casio to exploit and we get euphoric; and we’re getting giddier with every pluck of his trusty banjo, with each cosmic synth line he amiably births. A big thanks to our our Neighbor to the North, thanks for Chad. And Neil. Oh, and Rush. Sound samples on the front page.

Acid Mothers Temple & THe Cosmic Inferno
Journey Into The Cosmic Inferno
PS, UK "Though we shall henceforth be Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno, the new group will also be known in short as Acid Mothers Temple and this will no doubt sow confusion in the minds of many. But the true manifestations of Acid Mothers Temple are many - Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno, Acid Mothers Temple SWR. The future may see yet other groups bearing similar names. But each and all of them will be true manifestations of Acid Mothers Temple. Thus, on this the tenth anniversary of the founding of Acid Mothers Temple, I announce the birth of the hellchild, Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno" - Kawabata Makoto. Alvarez, Lesser, Gonzalez
Why Is Bear Billowing
PS, US A couple years ago, Baltimore's Alvarez was playing stripped down electro-pop (60s French chanteuse style) in the band Cache Cache. Other projects include playing guitar in the drone-tinged country-folk group The Tall Grass, as well as an electronic side project called The Ruby Stallion Ensemble. On this release, Lesser and his acoustic guitar craft some of the prettiest folk tunes you'll hear this year. He delivers his songs with a sense of whimsical earnestness, and has garnered comparisons to Nick Drake, John Fahey, and Donovan.

Black Nielson
Current Sunlight
PS, AUSTRALIA Beautiful 2005 album from now defunct British troubadours. Mike now plays in LTI band Co-pilgrim. At just under 5 years since the inception of the band, Black Nielson has established an impressive reputation, both on record and as a live act. The modest level of success achieved by the band can be traced in a steady trajectory from noble beginnings on the south coast of England, formed by principle songwriter Michael Gale... And that trajectory shows no sign of abating.

Bound Stems
Family Afloat
PS, US This expresses a crucial personal transition & a collective one. While BOUND STEMS quit their day-jobs to tour relentlessly throughout 2006 in support of their previous album (one that garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press, URB & Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges, & made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks & strong roots. It was a choice that also ultimately made the concept of home central to this 2008 album. The songs sound like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw & confusing, as uncomfortable & unexpected & rewarding as crucial.

Broken West
Now Or Heaven
PS, US Their sophomore full-length originates from home - the longing to get there and all that comes from being there. Each song is a maturation from the band's debut. The familiar catchy melodies are still there, as are the sublime harmonies and wry guitars, but "Now Or Heaven" is infused with a deeper, more serious perspective of the world.

Bubblegum Lemonade
Susan's in the Sky EP
PS, US Scottish wonderkids Bubblegum Lemonade debuted early this year with an outstanding single 'Ten Years Younger' that earned song of the day honors on influential radio station KEXP and amassed countless positive reviews in the music press including favorable comparisons to influential 60's popstars (The Velvet Underground, The Monkees, The Byrds) and 80's indie legends (Jesus and Mary Chain, Razorcuts, Biff Bang Pow!). Before delivering the all important debut album, the band pause for a moment to release a spectacular second EP! Title track 'Susan's In The Sky' is an everyday tale of an airhostess and her slacker boyfriend caught up in a Romeo and Juliet type scenario. It's another sunshine wall of pop with Rickenbacker guitars, tambourines and nice organ bits. A short dose of California sunshine perfect for all seasons. Among the EP's exclusive extra tracks, the cleverly titled 'Surfin' USB' is a proper jangle with fuzzy guitars and a nice Beach Boys coda, while 'Just Like You' continues the California theme in a 150 bpm mini classic drenched in Mary Chain feedback with a mix of fuzz and surf guitars. Closing track 'Holocaust' is a superb cover of the legendary Big Star classic featuring a mix of Rickenbacker and acoustic guitars. Once described as "the perfect C86 pop band that just happened to turn up 22 years behind schedule," Bubblegum Lemonade deliver instantly memorable songs with brilliant pop melodies. 'Susan's In The Sky' is another remarkable success for Matinée and a vibrant reminder of the essential new pop coming out of Scotland. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

Callers
Fortune
PS, US The 11 songs here channel a temporal sense of place & hope over despair. W/the wounded perseverance of Karen Carpenter & the vulnerable, tough-as-nails courage of Heart's Ann Wilson, SARA LUCAS' voice is rich & unforgettable. RYAN SEATON's guitar work is equally engaging, as he masterfully delivers beautiful & unusual chords, gritty distortion, & even intricate flourishes that call to mind the ever-impressive Tinariwen.

Carr, Derek
The Digital Space Race
PS, IRELAND Derek Carr is one of Ireland's unsung heroes of soulful techno. Derek has been making music for almost 2 decades now (if you include his early experiments as a 14 year old with a Casio sampler). Following many releases over the past 7 years on a wide variety of electronic labels now comes his anticipated debut album for Psychonavigation Records.. 'The Digital Space Race' compiles ten tracks of sublime electronic music that can be enjoyed equally in the stoned privacy of your home or on the dance floor. For fans of John Beltran,B12,The Black Dog, Carl Craig... this is an essential record.

Carter, Tom
Shots At Infinity
PS, US Comprised of recordings from various basements in the northeastern US from late 2007. Steering away from the more delicate string environments & modal folk improvisations of previous CDs, the disc features maximum loop delay drone overload stretched over long, densely harmonic tracks, retaining the melodic content & flow of earlier releases. His solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, w/heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise & drone bands.

Chunklet
#20
PS, US The final installment in a trilogy of EP's recorded for Acuarela. This is the most commercial & (shockingly) danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light & shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is the group as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colours; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.
ZINE
$10.00

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Desveaux, Angela
Mighty Ship
PS, US Follow up release to her 2006 debut. This album borrows its title from a traditional folk ballad about the Titanic, but it also refers to DESVEAUX's Grandmother, which whom she is very close & who sadly lost her 1st husband at sea. Ever since the release of her debut album & after much touring w/ Bruce Cockburn, Archer Prewitt, Califone & Howe Gelb - Desveaux is now a much more confident bandleader, which is apparent on this album. It is a bold step for her - the song writing is assured &, as always, her voice & range takes center stage - very much influenced & informed by artists like Chrissy Hynde, Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, Gillian Welch & Lucinda Williams.

Donkeys, The
Living On The Other Side
PS, US If THE DONKEYS' backstory contains those top-down cars and suntanned utopian surf tableaus, it also contains the malaise and the escape fantasies familiar to all suburban kids of the 80s and 90s. Part of this magic comes from the fact that there's no artifice to the Donkeys' songs, from the matter-of-fact breakup blues of "Boot on the Seat" to the playful recollections of a late, drunken night narrated on "Nice Train." These are everyday lives in the postmodern world expressed with a deep respect for classic songs from the 70s through the 90s -- for spacey grooves and soulful, jangly swagger -- that elevates the subject matter beyond the ordinary. "Living on the Other Side", the band's second album, is not meant to hit you over the head with a flamboyant single - instead, imagine Ray Davies jamming with the Byrds, or a Gene Clark-fronted Buffalo Springfield -- and you'll get a sense of the tradition that informs this band.

Durrett, Liz
Outside Our Gates
PS, US Produced and arranged by indie rock icon, Eric Bachmann (Archers Of Loaf, Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray), "Outside Our Gates" represents a sonic leap forward for Liz Durrett. Her spare, acoustic downbeats have been supplanted by a more textured and diverse orchestra of sounds. A virtual cacophony of instruments are here (strings, wurlitzers, accordions, grand space pianos, and marching drums) and Bachmann's score somehow harmonizes them seamlessly to provide the perfect setting for Liz's near stream of consciousness writings and soft, pitch-perfect voice. Additional performances by Vic Chesnutt, Brian Causey (Man Or Astro-Man?), Amanda Kapousouz (Tin Cup Phrophette), and members of Ham1.

Great Depression
Forever Altered
PS, US A lush & well-produced psychedelic-tinged intricate beauty. Layered, rich structures support well-crafted melodies & a warm & embracing sound. The tone is still generally blissful & sombre, though w/a definite injection of melodic pop energy, particularly on the charging title track. Their chamber-pop & shoegaze influences lend them comparisons to early Spiritualized, MBV & Radiohead, though pop sensibilities & Todd Casper's own impressive production talents make their varied approach entirely cohesive.

PS, US This was Greater Than One's first "proper" LP, issued originally in 1987 by Graeme Revell (SPK) and Brian (Lustmord) Williams on their Side Effects Records label. Here it is paired with Trust, their first attempt at the album's recording but released in 1990 on We Never Sleep (LP) and in 1991 by ROIR (CS). While the popular world knows more about Lee Newman and Michael Wells as Technohead, GTO, or Tricky Disco, All The Masters Licked Me is their first fully realized concept of weaving samples into a vivid aural tapestry. From the original press release: "The music is devised from sampling sounds which are programmed via a computer system to form strong and powerful pieces of aural art: mixing noises from the underground system with ethnic chanting, heavy metal & hip hop beats with military drumming and classical orchestration. The album contains 9 tracks on each side, with pieces referring to rioting 'The Sweet Smell of a Supermarket On Fire' to ' The Rape of Sam the Fox,' a track that evokes gallery slaves, masturbation and physical brutality. Each track is carefully constructed to convey the intentions and meaning contained within the titles." The album was recorded and digitally mastered by Greater Than One. To make the CD the original betamax studio master tape was baked for 72 hours at a special audio house in the UK. The DAT for Trust was generously donated by Lucas Cooper of ROIR. Enhanced CD content includes MP3s of the entire album, unbroken, photos, cover images, an art book, and an extensive book with articles and press clippings and words from Michael Wells and others.

Growing
All The Way
PS, US "All The Way", the debut full-length from GROWING on THE SOCIAL REGISTRY, concludes a epic trip. Through six tracks Kevin Doria and Joe DeNardo complete the conceptual arc initiated on their 2006 album, "Color Wheel". If we still bought into genres, we would say that this record finally achieves a perfect balance of noise and pop, yet what we can say is that you'll potentially hum melodies long after your headphones are out. Recorded by Barry London at his Ocropolis Studio during the 2007-08 winter, "All The Way" sounds like some sort of frozen urban chaos taking place at a superclub on another planet.

DUSTED MAGAZINE: "With their new LP, All the Way, Joe Denardo and Kevin Doria plum their synthetic musical logic - you know, the one they developed with the help of Black Dice, Spacemen 3, and a lot of time in the wilderness and on the road - more thoroughly than they ever have before. Growing's melodic and rhythmic interplay is the accomplishment to look out for here, a mellow treat that makes one wonder if the emphasis on the transcendence of their live show misses just how successful a headphone band Growing is."

I Am Robot And Proud
Uphill City
PS, US I Am Robot And Proud is the name Toronto native Shaw-han Liem works under to create his singular brand of hypnotic, beguiling electronic pop music. Uphill City is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up to his very popular 2006 album The Electricity in Your House Wants to Sing. Like the previous record, Uphill City is electronic pop music that energizes the listener and refreshes the ear yet Shaw-han's skill as clever pop composer has grown even more mesmerizing. Shawn-han says the theme of the new record is that of struggle and achievement in the big city. IARAP is syncopated multi-instrumental rhythms and playful, repetitive multi-dimensional melodies -- just the elixir your head needs. Shaw-Han mixes acoustic instrumentation; piano, guitar and drums seamlessly with his unique electronic keyboard sounds and percussive elements. This isn't difficult, experimental IDM that pulls the listener off the left side of the dial. This is complex composition that manages to simply delight. It's an exciting sound that gives one the feeling of flying fast & free through a heavenly modern green world of pop, beauty, and sunshine. Your brain chemicals are sure to be balanced after the first minute into the title track. "Since the 2006 album, i have done some traveling and playing shows around the world and visiting many cities. Its interesting for me to see how everyone is living in different ways but there are still similarities. In English, the word "Uphill" has a kind of a double meaning. It can be positive like "things are looking up", or it can mean something is very difficult like "uphill battle". I thought the city was like a symbol for the challenges that happen in your life." --Shaw-han Liem

PS, US A collaboration between Walter Salas-Humara of the SILOS and lyrics by author JONATHAN LETHEM. "You Are All My People floats through a woozy middle ground between The Mountain Goats' storytelling economy and art-pop's habit of letting convention loose with the wind. Jackie-O Motherfucker
Freedomland
PS, UK In the late summer of 2006, Jackie-O Motherfucker- the infamous, shape-shifting, free rock constellation- were in their hometown of Portland OR. Preparing for a cross-country tour of the USA when it was discovered that two of the four touring members, at the time, could not make the trip, due to financial situations, and problems getting away from jobs and domesticity. After some discussion, and re-grouping, they decided to continue on with the tour, and placed a call to Eva Salens (Inca Ore) who was doing agricultural work in the hills of Humboldt County, Ca. She eagerly accepted the challenge of conspiring with the group, lending her considerable skills as a vocalist, and it was decided that they would all meet at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, where the group were scheduled for their first appearance supporting the Dirty Three. There they would begin- unrehearsed in this formation, and in front of a large audience. The plans to perform material from their newest release "flags of the sacred harp" were scraped, and the band launched into a free form set of improvised trance inducing, punk inspired, psychedelic rock, which became the framework of the new music they would develop together over the next few years. With a backpack full of California's finest, the newly created touring group- consisting now of Eva Salens, Tom Greenwood, Danny Sasaki, and Nick Bindeman, continued on to Los Angeles, over the deserts, and through America. Freedomland, is a document of this trip, as well as another American tour, which the same band set off on the following spring... the record consists of location recordings, captured live, and mastered in the UK. The songs were created from the spirit of improvisation- and honed true by performing nightly in dive bars, music halls, and art galleries across America. The music is a testament to creation, brave and searching, and an endorsement of the abstraction that lies hidden in the footprints of all great music... Salens' vocal delivery is raw and honest, the words flow from conversations, to streams of sub-conscious conjuring, and prayer. Guitars alternately soar into cloud-scapes, and battle like free-jazz saxophones, propelling the group into new terrain nightly, while the percussion of Danny Sasaki alternates between exploratory and dead-solid motoric. The collection was edited by Tom Greenwood, from dozens of live recordings, and captures a rare moment in the bands long, and confusing history. It is truly the music of everyday life- birthed each night in a new form, from musicians who put great faith in each other, under awesome strain at times, to project modern music, with soul.

Jurado, Damien
Caught In The Trees
PS, US "Caught In the Trees" marks the dawn of a new era for DAMIEN JURADO. It may not be a huge departure from some of his past albums musically, but lyrically Jurado has taken a giant leap forward and there is no turning back. Best known for his dark yet fragile first person fictional tales, Jurado now unlocks the door and invites us into his own enigmatic world with an energy and intensity that is all consuming. Jurado took a full year to make this record, longer than ever before, as he ran away from and eventually found himself in his own songs. He subsequently found refuge in sharing the songs with his closest friends and bandmates, Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad. Having walked alongside him through this most challenging journey, the songs that came out of it are as much theirs as his. Jurado, Fisher, and Conrad collaborated on the compositions - some much more rocking than Jurado fans are used to, but ever as intense - and pulled in producers Kory Kruckenberg and Casey Foubert to contribute their own unique stylings. Recording started in the summer months and the sweltering heat, and wrapped in the freezing temps of winter. (It is clear on first listen that two distinct seasons are represented through "Caught In the Trees" - an accidental metaphor perhaps?) There was laughter and there was introspection, and the result is a record that Jurado loyalists will find was worth the wait. And perhaps a reason to listen for those who have yet to give this bedraggled storyteller a chance.

LA JR
17 Animales
PS, SPAIN The best unheralded Spanish (or European?) band of all times, LA JR, are led as usual by Frank, Rafa and Borja as the ultimate Dadaist-pop ensemble. There is no exact definition for the word 'dada' and there are no exact words to describe the multifariousness of LA JR. "17 animales" is a work of dark atmospheric lounge, trance Kraut-Rock groove or just anti-jazz-folk, as we like to name it: THIS is to music what assemblage is to art; an overlaying of diverse, motley materials; it sounds like porcelain, wood, glass and it squeaks even though it doesn't sound like squeaking. Pendulum-like piano playing, husky basses, humming from the tide of the keyboards, every element bursts into bubbles. "17 animales" an ultra contemporary album about Death, Sex and the slight possibility of turning Life into Art and back again.

Maserati
Inventions Remixes
PS, US Last year Georgia's MASERATI ended a four-year absence with "Inventions For The New Season", a delirious soundtrack for late-night cityscapes and never-ending car chases. The first album featuring new drummer Jerry Fuchs (LCD Soundsystem, !!!, The Juan Maclean), Inventions quite literally reinvented Maserati as a motorik psych-rock band with a disco ball for a kick drum. It makes sense, then, that Maserati have commissioned a pair of remixes by two producers most likely to shove their songs onto the dancefloor feet-first. Side A finds THEE LOVING HAND (Tim Goldsworthy of The DFA, Hercules and Love Affair) stripping "The World Outside" to almost nothing, reimagining it as a vintage European disco track from the ground up. Starting with a steady, far-off kick drum and a rogue, in-your-face hi hat, the song's seemingly disparate parts eventually lock into the kind of dirty disco that has made Goldsworthy a club legend. Equally club-friendly, !!!'s JUSTIN VAN DER VOLGEN brushes away the grit of the original "Inventions" and painstakingly buffs it to a shine as slick as black ice. The side-long trance mix maintains the sweaty atmosphere of the original, but removes the top-down drive in favor of a midnight jog. Strictly limited to a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies, "Inventions Remixes" is both an addendum to the successful reboot of Inventions For The New Season, as well as a testament to the broad spectrum of influences that flow in and out of Maserati's music.

Northern Portrait
Napoleon Sweetheart EP
PS, US Stunning second single from new Matinée favorites Northern Portrait! Upon release of their debut 'The Fallen Aristocracy' EP earlier this year, the accolades started pouring in for this new Danish band: "as perfect as jangling guitar pop can get"... "an instant classic"... "the bar has been set very high indeed"..."these songs are second to none"... "outstanding is an understatement"..."a modern pop classic"..."single of the year!" The EP has topped the Matinée best sellers chart every month since its release with good reason. On the highly anticipated 'Napoleon Sweetheart' EP, the band worked to expand its sound slightly while retaining the classic appeal of its debut. The brilliant lead track 'I Give You Two Seconds To Entertain Me' was the second song ever recorded by the band but has been completely remixed and remastered for this EP. Featuring jangling guitars, keyboards, superb vocals and bright melodies, the song is a three-minute classic inspired by the feeling of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. 'Sporting A Scar' is the first of three additional tracks on the EP-thematically close but more self-reflective than the lead track, with especially superb lyrics and more breezy keyboards. It's another gem! 'In An Empty Hotel' is a short and catchy tune about the clash between hopeful dreams and the practical problems that can occur, while the nearly epic 'Our Lambrusco Days' is a slightly sentimental and warm ballad with relatively simple instrumentation and open guitar tuning giving the song a special sound. Reviewers of the first EP rightly questioned how Northern Portrait could possibly follow such a strong debut single. The band has responded in brilliant fashion, as 'Napoleon Sweetheart' is another solid contender for single of the year. The bar has been set very high indeed. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

The album features 11 songs and includes the track "Lost Coastlines," on which SHEFF and recently departed JONATHAN MEIBURG of Shearwater share a duet on the joys and hardships of trying to keep the band together. Of the process Will Sheff explains, "We had so many songs we were excited about that we briefly threw around the idea of just putting out a double record. Instead, we decided to take a group of songs that fit with each other and turn that into "The Stage Names", setting the rest aside for a future release, a "The Stage Names" sequel." "The Stand Ins" is that sequel, part two of a staggered double album. Like artist William Schaff's embroidered artwork, which depicts what's happening underneath The Stage Names' front-cover quicksand hand,The Stand Ins picks up exactly where Part One left off but also delves deeper into the story and theme of "The Stage Names". It is a full-length, fleshed-out, deeply ambitious labor of love.

Owl Service, The And Alison O'Donnell
The Fabric of Folk
PS, UK If you thought social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook were just devices which sucked you into an unstoppable vortex of wasted time, then think again. A chance discussion between Steven Collins and Alison O'Donnell, formerly of legendary Irish prog-folk troupe Mellow Candle, took place on such a website and out of that conversation came the first fruits of this collaboration. The Fabric of Folk is a 5-track EP featuring Collins' in his guise as main man of the Owl Service, one generation of folk-rock crashing head-long into an earlier, glorious era represented here by the considerable vocal talents of Alison O'Donnell. Capturing the many different faces of folk-rock, the five songs here - two are original compositions by the pair, one of which was written with the Straw Bear Band's Dominic Cooper - are perfectly formed, heartfelt and touching but with more than a hint of darkness. This follows on from the Owl Service's previous release for Static Caravan, the Cine 3" CD (VAN 140), and arrives alongside their debut album A Garland of Song, which is being released on Southern Records. Meanwhile, Alison's former band Mellow Candle have returned to prominence on the back of the newly repackaged Swaddling Songs - their solitary album release - which has been remastered and reissued by Esoteric/Cherry Red. Inspired by a mutual recognition and respect, the pairing of Collins' band with O'Donnell is a dreamy combination. Imbued with a sense of revivalism, The Fabric of Folk is far from backward-looking and instead concocts something incredibly new which, while referencing the production techniques and masterful storytelling of Brit-folk's heyday, is bubbling with new ideas and an inherent knack for crafting sublime arrangements.

Parenthetical Girls
Entanglements
PS, US ((LP has been postponed)) Portand, Oregon's PARENTHETICAL GIRLS have traded in their small-screen sincerity for a bold and blustering Technicolour - a lush, longing and lusty celluloid schmaltz they call "Entanglements". An orchestral song-cycle of grand sonic ambition, "Entanglements" is an eleven-song, linear narrative of ascendancy, adolescent sexuality, quantum mechanics, consent and other moral ambiguities! Borrowing string-swept sentimentality from the likes of Van Dyke Parks, Scott Walker, Jack Nitzsche, and Burt Bacharach, "Entanglements" draws colourful lines across the expanse between these orchestral pop antiquities and the more formidable strains of modern classical composers - its hues distantly reminiscent of names like Krzystof Penderecki, Philip Glass, and Gavin Bryars.

Praveen & Benoit
Songs Spun Simla
PS, US It's all in the wires. Praveen Sharma and Thomas Meluch (aka Benoît Pioulard) have met only a handful of times and have never resided in the same city, but over the course of two-plus years they have been quietly assembling Songs Spun Simla, a brief but luminescent collection of pieces driven by Praveen's inventive arrangements and Benoît's lush vocal harmonizing. Praveen released his remarkable debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint just as Benoît emerged with the Enge EP on Michigan's Moodgadget label in early 2005. Through mutual contacts they found that each was an admirer of the other's work, and the seeds for a casual collaboration were sown. Not long after, Praveen returned from a profound journey through his family's native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of opener "The Tunnel is Still There". As he continued creating new songs with an ever-expanding palette of instruments and digital effects, Benoît arranged lyrics and harmonies, driven by the unfamiliarity and excitement of the process. Various ideas arose concerning the fate of these works, but once a record's worth had been amassed, their friends at Music Related expressed interest in a proper release. Songs Spun Simla is named in honor of the village in India from which Praveen's family originates - it's inseparable from his musical inspirations yet still distant and shaped largely by memory. His compositions exist on a fitting scale, then; from the stunning, expansive lead-in of "Death as a Man" to the incredibly detailed percussion of "To Scale", there's a sense of worldliness, history and nostalgia placed in a crucible with technology and innovation. Much like a travelogue, the six movements of Songs Spun Simla abut soaring highs with passages of quiet, intimate beauty to create a deeply affecting whole. Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Thomas Meluch (aka Benoît Pioulard) began playing piano at age five and has been recording music and field sounds with various devices for nearly as long. He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he recently finished the follow-up album to the highly acclaimed Précis (2006) for the indie stalwarts at Chicago's Kranky.

Sabu
The World Of Sabu
PS, UK Selar Shaik Sabu made his first film appearance in 1937 as a 12-year-old orphan, having landed the title role in Elephant Boy purely by chance after being plucked from Indian obscurity by a British location crew. His rise to international stardom was swift and dramatic with leading roles in Alexander Korda's productions The Thief of Bagdad and Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. But by the time he appeared in Powell & Pressburger's Black Narcissus in 1947 that stardom was already guttering, and during the remaining 16 years of his tragically short life he was obliged to accept increasingly minor roles that mostly traded on former glories. Yet during those ten extraordinary years Sabu illuminated the screen in a way that remains without precedent. The renowned Hungarian film composer Miklos Rozsa wrote the scores for The Thief of Bagdad and Kipling's Jungle Book. Our edition restores them to the catalogue for the first time in decades. Sabu narrates the Jungle book to Rozsa's music in character as Mowgli. The result is charming. The recordings were originally released as a set of four 78 rpm discs in 1940. The first ever film soundtrack album Black Narcissus is classic Powell and Pressburger; The Archers at the height of their powers. A triumph of artistry in cinema to which Sabu contributes the memorable role of the young general.

Sailboats Are White

PS, AUSTRALIA As completely incidental as it may seem, the acronym for Sailboats Are White is in fact SAW. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's also a pretty accurate musical description. Scorces
I Turn Into You
PS, US "Most musical matters seem to cycle through rise/crash wave patterns of popularity and lately it seems that the duo formation is for some reason at the crest of its particular prevalence/relevance. Perhaps it has something to do with the faster psychic communion that births between a pair (versus a 5+ gang-style band). Or maybe it's just to save on gas money. Either way, very few fringe duos have succeeded in so fully utilizing the witchy, wordless, and wondrous bond of the twosome formation as Scorces' twin figureheads Christina Carter (also of Charalambides, Bastard Wing, etc.) and Heather Leigh Murray (Taurpis Tula, CEO of Volcanic Tongue, more). Their early incarnation as East Texas fried-folk loners instantly struck a chord in clued-in heads for both its bold formless experimental moods as well its instantly gripping emotional power. Their 2003 masterpiece on Eclipse, Vivre Avec La Bete, captured their magic craft perfectly, and in retrospect has definitely cast a heavy influence over a whole host of today's underground's voice-based lonesome drifters. So it is with amplified honor that we offer up this latest tome of spells unearthed from the Scorces' vaults: I Turn Into You. Nearly 70 minutes of pedal-steel guitar tendrils, basement dust, whispered melodies, enchanted strings thrummed against the quiet, and possibly the planet's single most intense dual free-crooning chemistry sprawled across four spectral sides of black vinyl. All tracks were recorded several years ago back at Charalambides HQ in Houston, TX by psych-guitar journeyman Tom Carter, and they've aged like oil paintings (cracking, majestic, immense). Housed in embossed, metallic ink jackets designed by Marcia Bassett (with a racy poem by the Scorces' ladies on the back), plus an 11x11 insert with info and a live shot. Edition of 500."

Social Junk
Concussion Summer
PS, US "The greater Midwest 'hood is responsible for so much of the U.S.'s most living music it seems like lately. Out here on the West we tend to get a bit blissed and burnt and, conversely, Eastern sea-boarders can fall into a condensed consciousness that sometimes doesn't translate well to those outside their bubble. But in the middle country, there's often a rawness that's honest and real and really clears the ears/mind, and for our tastes Ashland, Kentucky's Social Junk are champs of this direct, red-blooded approach. Somewhere between the Bible Belt brutality of Sword Heaven and Tusco Terror and the sticky southern electronics of Pax Titania or even recent Wet Hair, SJ navigate an interesting interzone, boiling together ominous loops, mangled sax, heavy riffs, various vocal moods (pissed, lost, aggro, angelic), militant tribal drumming, and a mess of electric atmospheres into something genuinely gripping and wholly their own. And right on the eve of both a behemoth bi-coastal tour (six weeks long!) and a brave re-location to CA's Bay Area, we are amped-as-shit to announce their vinyl debut after a million killer limited tapes and splits. Concussion Summer rumbles through noisy drum circles, hypnotic thrash, and even a couple creepy ballads, with Noah Anthony and Heather Young's co-dependent chemistry channeled into eight concise hybrid pieces of perfect/classic JUNK. High-time, and fully worth the wait. See them soon. Black vinyl LPs in jackets with artwork by Hair Police's Robert Beatty. Edition of 435."

Subaudible Hum
Everything You Heard is True
PS, AUSTRALIA Dark & brooding debut alt. rock masterpiece from this critically acclaimed Melbourne band. In late 2005 SubAudible Hum released their debut full-length album entitled "Everything You Heard Is True". It was a dark, venomous abrasion on the guitar format that also managed to make time for sprawling sonic scenery and downbeat, melancholic intricacy. The record gained SubAudible Hum immediate national radio rotation including a spot on Triple J's Next Crop campaign. SubAudible Hum write from that mysterious void between emotive art and didactic thesis. The subject matter is always of paramount importance but never at the expense of listening pleasure, in fact SubAudible Hum may just have found the harmonious middle ground between the two. Any modern day themes of global politics, dirty economics, fundamental agendas, and social degradation are always communicated with music, never using it as a soapbox. Stepping into 2006 SubAudible Hum have a whole new take. Having purged much of their structural and self-imposed stylistic constraints the SubAudible Hum sound is now less definable than ever. Their sophomore effort "In Time For Spring, On Came The Snow" swings from drawn-out orchestral opuses to quasi-UK indie trash to dam bursting, almost trip hop anthems. With this release, as always, SubAudible Hum are exploring every crevasse of their musical ambitions. "An extremely impressive Melbourne debut" Beat - Andrew Ramadge. "21st century disillusionment expressed in the form of grinding guitars, marching drums, an astounding, impassioned voice, and a bass tone that can only be classified as heave machinery, this is the sound Fritz Lang surely had in mind when he created his Metropolis" Beat - Today is the day "Single Of The Week" - Daniel Z "Describing the voice as a mash of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke & Iggy Pop. SubAudible Hum, big, deep and melancholic without ever crossing over into self-indulgence" Lucky - Matty B "A profoundly eclectic first release fluently melding the emotional with the intellectual... a work of undeniable brilliance" Inpress - Shane O'Donohue

VanGaalen, Chad
Soft Airplane (ON SALE)
PS, US Recalling Neil Young at his most fragile and plaintive, and Thurston Moore at his most resolved and vital, Chad's emotive vocals anchor these songs while tackling the pervasive themes of death and dreams with an unexpected air of certainty and hope that is far from ominous - instead, it's luminous. Through a complex interplay of guitar, drum beats, loops, samples, found sounds, unorthodox percussion, xylophones, distortion, synthesizers, accordions, and more, Chad has made an album that sounds bigger than one man. CALGARY FFWD: "Local favourite Chad VanGaalen hasn't left his bedroom on his latest album, Soft Airplane, but it sounds like he might have moved out of the basement. Make no mistake, Soft Airplane is still thoroughly a Chad VanGaalen album - his usual lo-fi esthetic is in full force, his signature falsetto still hauntingly wavers and he's still obsessed with death, dreaming and '90s nostalgia - it's just more fully formed than anything he's done before."

Villa-Lobos, Heitor
Nonetto (An Impression Of The Whole Of Brazil)
PS, UK Precocious and full of wonderment, the Nonetto and Quatuor, written by Villa-Lobos in 1924 and 1921 respectively, are surely two of the unsung minor masterpieces of the early 20th Century. In its fusion of pagan rhythms and chanting with the brittle harmonies of the avant-garde, Nonetto brings to mind Stravinsky's Les Noces and Prokofiev's Scythian Suite. Yet the piece is also characterized by a freewheeling playfulness more suggestive of jazz and folk music than the concert hall. Those coming at the piece from a rock perspective are also likely to hear an uncanny foreshadowing of the more considered music of Frank Zappa. Quatuor (for flute, harp, celesta, alto saxophone and women¹s voices) is a thoroughly magical work also; a combination of dense, even knotty, harmonies and unashamed sensuality: Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the best-kept secrets in music. This edition restores to print two historic performances of the Nonetto and Quatuor from 1941 and 1957 combining them with a set of exquisite Villa-Lobos guitar works performed by the great masters Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream and Laurindo Almeida.

Vivian Girls
Tell The World
PS, US Irresistible mix of shoegaze, punk, and '60s girl-group sounds with beautiful reverb-drenched vocals. Features three self-recorded tracks of lo-fi goodness. PICTHFORK: "Brooklyn noise-pop band Vivian Girls drop sweet girl-group melodies into proto-shoegaze squalls the way the Jesus & Mary Chain used to and the way groups like the Aislers Set, C86s-ers the Shop Assistants, and the Manhattan Love Suicides have done with female vocalists. Vivian Girls keep the Shangri-Las' melodrama, too. "Tell the World" is rebellion in the form of romance, kids casting off their chains for a kiss like the protagonists in "I Think We're Alone Now". It's more harmony-oriented than are some of the groups' peers, and the tunes can take a more speech-like, punk-edged turn via groups like the Wipers, whom Vivian Girls have covered."

Webb, TK & The Visions
Ancestors
PS, US TK Webb & The Visions Ancestor Following the release of TK Webb's second solo LP, Phantom Parade (Social Registry, 2006), dubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine as a four-star, oddly gripping effort, it was evident that Webb's songwriting was beginning to outgrow the sound that had peppered his solo efforts. The new songs that would go on to comprise the Ancestor record referenced the rock music that Webb had grown up on. This sparked his decision to form The Visions in the summer of 2007. Joining Webb in the new band on second guitar is Brian Hale (ex-Love As Laughter), who had previously been accompanying Webb on bass following the release of Phantom Parade, Nic Gonzales (The Comas, Love As Laughter, Blood on the Wall) on drums, and Jordan Gable rounding out the line up on bass. This new cast helps take TK's acoustic visions and plugs them in through the Marshall, making for a heavier, more cohesive listen than Webb's previous work. Produced by Matt Boynton at his Vacation Islands Studios in Brooklyn, Ancestor speaks of modern day paranoia, love, and a host of other human emotions many of us face in our day-to-day, making for not only an amazingly heavy, but also a sincerely beautiful recording. TIME OUT NY: "As good as TK Webb is as a whiskey-stained country-blues troubadour, we're glad he's got a rhythm section behind him now. Together, the outfit is one of NYC's hottest rock bands, a ragged but staggeringly powerful outfit that triangulates Zeppelin, David Allan Coe & Spacemen 3."

Woven Hand
Ten Stones
PS, US In the words of Robert Browning, WOVENHAND heralds "another greater, wilder country" on "Ten Stones". From the jarring folk of "White Knuckle Grip", to the eerie bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars", to the fiery foot-stomper "Not One Stone", the album forms a song-cycle that is singular in its breadth and eclecticism. Flanked by the haunting strains of the bandoneón and the drones of the double bass, Edwards' lyrical inversions stitch symbols into a tapestry of peaceable and hellish imagery-horsetails, honeybees, and bird wings meet flaming battles and barbed wire to proclaim sin's devastation and the sweetness of redemption. The music of Wovenhand is utterly unique, dizzying those who encounter it, with turnings and lashings of shadow and light.

Woven Hand
Ten Stones
PS, US New Woven Hand album from David Eugene Edwards, former leader for 16 Horsepower. In the words of Robert Browning, WOVENHAND heralds "another greater, wilder country" on "Ten Stones". AVERSION: "The thirtysomething singer returns with a sound so world-weary and cunningly insightful, you'd swear Edwards had been honing his craft since that whale barfed up Jonah. Returning to the dark and unwieldy matters of sin, redemption and Man's struggle to stay on the straight and narrow, Ten Stones is spiritual without being expressly religious. Edwards wraps his ten tales of mankind's struggle with his own nature in everything from nearly iconic semi-Biblical imagery (bees, birds) and an almost voodoo-like appropriation of symbology from the modern world (barbed wire, cast-off feathers). Every note he sings is borne of equal parts fire and brimstone, high plains dust and Denver smog, electric guitar and church organ."

Young Widows
Old Wounds
PS, US Arriving two years after their debut, Settle Down City, "Old Wounds" completes YOUNG WIDOWS' transformation into a top-shelf rock band firing on all cylinders. Forging the best parts of Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Fugazi and The Melvins, "Old Wounds" is a series of dynamic, thoughtful tunes anchored by cavernous that will certainly push most speakers to their breaking point. For the unique production, the band reunited with uber-producer friend (and Converge guitarist) Kurt Ballou, who had been eager to experiment with recording the band in multiple environments, with the intent of capturing the definitive take of each song for the final cut of the album. Feeling most at home when they're not at home, they brought Ballou along on tour to record all of their live shows. In addition, they recorded multiple sets in their rehearsal space, and another set at Ballou's Godcity Studios in Boston, MA. After tediously combing through a dozen hours of recordings, they compiled and mixed the album. The result is a bonafide classic, overflowing with the sweaty euphoria of a great live show, and the high replay value of a perfectly sequenced, well-produced rock record.

Amplifier Machine
Her Mouth Is An Outlaw (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 7TH)
PS, US Amplifier Machine began in 2002 with James Dixon (Swordfish, Supagroop, James Dixon) on guitar, Korg & piano, Seth Rees (The Spheres, This Is Your Captain Speaking, I Want A Hovercraft, Seth Rees) on drums, violin, samples, piano & guitar and Alex Jarvis (Automatic, Black Cab, Registered Nurse, Alex Jarvis) on guitar & drums, with the intention of combining their songwriting talents. Something about getting three solo artists together, or maybe something about what rehearsing for so long in a freezing Collingwood warehouse does to the brain, caused the pop-bred members of Amplifier Machine to spiral out into a peculiar music of inquisitive, atmospheric, half-improvised mini-epics. Amplifier Machine is a self-described experiment inanemocratic process and near-improvisation (anemocracy = rule by whim or the wind). Through earnest discussion and endless unending jams, Amplifier Machine came upon The Rule: that when the other two members have settled, it's your turn to change. The Rule was found to be useful, not only in musical terms, but also as a strategy in discussion, advocacy for the devil, and reducto absurdums. Each members' musical approach is informed by knowledge of various artistic processes, including: visual art, drama, the written word, carpentry and car maintenance. Thus, in music and in discussion, Amplifier Machine tends to start with a thesis, then to spiral out into varying antitheses, to arrive at some sort of synthesis. At least, that's the idea. Somewhat of a departure, in terms of sound, for 12k, Her Mouth Is An Outlaw breezes darkly languid chords over a post-rock-meets-experimental structure that is decidedly lacking in micro-electronics. These echoes reach for new 12k-heights while the spirit of ambience and space remain familiar.

A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). Coil/The New Blockaders/Vortex Campaign
The Melancholy Mad Tennant (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16th)
PS, US Limited edition of 500 copies. Limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released on cassette in 1984 and then on cd in an edition of 500. In 1984 Vortex Campaign invited Coil and The New Blockaders to collaborate. The result, unofficially referred to as "Dolbied", was released on cassette in an edition of 50. The release has since gone on to become legendary, showcasing two of the most influential groups in the scene at the early stages of their development. "The Melancholy Mad Tenant" is an authorized release, sanctioned by all three groups. Formed in 1983 the output of Coil has ranged from the avant-garde, to experimental neoclassical, to extended excursions into pure electronica. Many bands and composers have cited Coil as an influence. Coil were mainly a studio group, but in 2000 they commenced a successful series of tours that proved to be extremely remarkable events. The New Blockaders began in 1982 with the release of the debut LP "Changez Les Blockeurs" which is cited by many as a defining moment in the history of noise music. TNB have gone on to influence a generation of artists from Japanese noise-maestro Merzbow to noise punks Wolf Eyes.

Conifer
Crown Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, US Though Conifer has received quite a bit of critical praise they've somehow managed to live off the grid for the past six years. With "Crown Fire", Conifer is finally getting the exposure they deserve. Mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal and pschychedlia they have created this relentlessly driving and hypnotic masterpiece. Crown Fire's only vocals are from Oxbow's Eugene Robinson fronting the albums final 13 minute epic. Conifer has been writing primarily instrumental music with a lawless take on the styles from which they've taken cue. New content is found by way of augmenting brutality and suspense with time. Conifer seems to reckon with the notions of bands like Enemymine, Mogwai, or Grails while taking an approach toward their music that's entirely meditative (as opposed to premeditated). Minimal, ethereal passages are narcotically lengthened and crescendos of distortion are sustained well beyond the boundaries adhered to by many of their peers.

Co-Pilgrim
Pucker Up Buttercup (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Sparkling & beautiful down beat pop gem from British troubadour Mike Gale. Co-Pilgrim was started in August of 2005 by Mike Gale following the demise of his former band Black Nielson. 'Pucker Up Buttercup was released on Low Transit Industries across Australia in March of 2007. The album received glowing reviews and substantial airplay. Gale had been toying with the idea of adding a female vocalist/guitarist for a while so when he met Alysia Manceau at one of her former bands shows in Melbourne he decided to ask if she'd be interested in joining Co-Pilgrim. Alysia Manceau is a self taught musician who began playing guitar at the age of five. After Studying film and television at RMIT in Melbourne she realised that her true passion in life was music. Writing and performing locally in Melbourne since 2000 as a solo artist, Her formidable underground reputation as one of Melbournes most unique singers and guitarists led to her becoming a founding member in Alternative Country/Rock and Roll band Ned And The Meds. Luckily for Gale, Manceau agreed to take up his offer of joining Co-Pilgrim formally and the two have been working together since, indeed, such was the pairs belief in their new found unison that Gale moved into Manceau's sharehouse in order to live and breath together with the music they create, which is a beautiful blend of folk and country, with emphasis on space and harmonies. The newly strengthened Co-Pilgrim have been performing frequently around Melbourne for the past six months as well as recording a demo CD of future single and album material.

Cotton Jones Basket Ride
The River Strumming (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US COTTON JONES BASKET RIDE is the new band fronted by singer-songwriter Michael Nau (former frontman of PAGE FRANCE). "The River Strumming" is a delightful slab of fuzzed-out dream folk that thumps with a musical heartbeat in a manner not dissimilar to that of forward thinking modern-day shamen like Will Hart and Brightblack Morning Light. This album completed itself, so to speak, forming in pieces over a six month span while the band was working on its debut full-length "Paranoid Cocoon" (to be released in late 2008). Nau and company initially set out to make a cohesive record, and made just the opposite. Some songs were recorded on one machine in December, finished on another machine in March, destroyed in April, then attached to another song in May. Likewise, it fits so well with the sort of records that ST. IVES is in love with releasing - the three-legged dogs of the world, the records that don't quite fit elsewhere, barely even within an artist's own body of work. "The River Strumming" is limited to 300 vinyl copies in hand-made packaging - each LP hand-wrought (as all St. Ives releases are) by the band itself - and is not expected to remain in stock long.

Darling Downs
From One to Another (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, US "A record of spare, tender songcraft, whose delicate shifts in tone make the simple alt.country tag inadequate. A brave move for both, brilliantly pulled off. 4 stars."-Uncut. The DDs stand out as the most unlikely of collaborations between longtime members of the fertile Australian rock scene. While it is not at alll insane to imagine the driving force behind SCIENTISTS, BEASTS OF BOURBON & SURREALISTS, KIM SALMON, working with DIED PRETTY's energetic frontman and songwriter RON PENO, the improbable happens when you consider the result that might flow from such a teaming. What are the odds that these two towering figures of Australian music, famous for swaggering, noisy, swampy punk rock (Salmon) & soaring pop rock (Peno) would concoct such a perfect loveletter to American country folk? Armed only with Kim Salmon's custom Cole Clark acoustic guitar and Peno's singular voice & vision, The Darling Downs crafted an almost impossible album: a record of nuanced beauty, a subtle masterpiece that unfolds like a dahlia with each successive spin, giving the listener something new & unexpected at every helping. All from two guys & one pristine guitar. At times Peno channels the spirit of Appalachian folk's high lonesome sound, complete with yips, yelps & howls, while elsewhere his (improvised?!) vocals are hypnotically understated, almost delicate--threatening to disappear into thin air before crashing down like thunder. Supporting Peno's acrobatic vocal brilliance is Salmon's equally understated, elegant guitar
playing, perhaps the most restrained of his career, made all the more stunning when you know the fireworks & growl of which he is capable & for which he is famous. Salmon showcases not only his versatility but playing of such surprisingly refined grace that it defines the album as one of the best listens of 2006. An album of profound subtlety. "With Salmon often infusing the guitar lines with deft lilts & melodies, grasping each song is sometimes as difficult as interpreting a smoke signal in a storm, the ever-shifting qualities of the music making it difficult to categorize. The experience mesmerizes."-The Age (AU).

Eleh
Floating Frequencies/Intuitive Synthesis Volume 3 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, US Deluxe pressing of 500 copies packaged in letterpressed covers designed by Important and printed by 23rd Parallel. Mastered by James Plotkin. Hand numbered/hand assembled. Eleh's Intuitive Synthesis/Floating Frequencies Volume 3 is the third release in their Intuitive Synthesis series (Volume 2 was released over a year ago) and it is being released simultaneously with an Eleh/Pauline Oliveros split release. Both are limited edition and LP only. Meticulously minimal analog drone. Eleh was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early experimental minimalist pioneers especially La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine. Using an enormous vintage modular analog synthesizer, a battery of glowing HP tube test oscillators and occasionally guitar/piano, Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog drone music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low end. Incorporating tones as low as .05 hz (well below the range of human hearing) Eleh is as much of a physical experience as it is an audio one. This engaging record was created as a tool for meditation and to be heard/felt correctly the listener must be sitting with ears at speaker height at least 7 feet away from the speakers. Volume reveals detail.

Split LP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, US Eleh: The Beauty Of The Steel Skeleton Pauline Oliveros: Drifting Depths Important Records quite pleased to be presenting this split release consisting of two new drone works from Pauline Oliveros and Eleh. Oliveros, an early American minimalist who has pioneered the technique of Deep Listening, has created a new work exlcusively for this release. Drifting Depths is a new improvised piece made on a harmonica being processed through Pauline's Expanded Instrument System. Eleh's side, also exclusive to this vinyl only release, is super slow melodic drone full of stillness, tension & relief. Vinyl only, handmade and handassembled letterpressed jackets. Limited edition. A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Oliveros is one of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (along with Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, and Anthony Martin), which was the resource on the U.S. west coast for electronic music during the 1960s. The Center later moved to Mills College, where she was its first director, and is now called the Center for Contemporary Music. Oliveros often improvises with the Expanded Instrument System, an electronic signal processing system she designed, in her performances and recording.

Ewers, Suki
Kind of Hazy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, UK Former member of Opal and Mazzy Star. After performing for several years with Anemone, a band once touted as the missing link in the country music/dream pop connection, Suki spent the last couple of years in the studio working with Joe Kennedy on a set of nine songs. These were eventually sent off to be mixed & masterd by Kramer. The result is hazy, bittersweet pop in the vein of Galaxie 500 & Felt. The songs are at once dreamy & enigmatic yet immediately accessible. Suki manages to evoke much of the same delicately pretty gloominess as Opal while adding her own serenely melodic warmth. "A female-fronted The Clientele with a slightly more American brand of melancholy." -Filter Magazine.

Flaherty, Paul
Aria Nativa (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US "Aria Nativa" is more than PAUL FLAHERTY'S third solo saxophone album; it merges rhapsodic avant garde music, patriotic dream verse, and mortality into a frighteningly pure work of audio, visual and literary sledge. Recorded during a pair of 2007 performances, its four pieces capture lifeblood in stunning detail from foot stomps to gut hollers and crowd roars as Flaherty's free power blues dips into the well of wretchedness and raises with fists of mirth. It's the sorta record that splays naked the artist for all: equal parts wise ass and universal vision. From his early 1970s woodshedding through a dozen plus albums each with drum buddies Randall Colburne and Chris Corsano, and collaborators Bill Nace, Wally Shoup and Sunburned Man of the Hand, Flaherty remains a total wildcat - on and off the alto/tenor horns. For this LP his massive tonal craft is equally matched by Ken Hill's gorgeous cover shot of a snow blown grave and "No More America" - Ken DelPonte's epic poem that spans nearly five decades and fills the back jacket, framing the atmosphere the music was recorded under. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for MP3 version of the album that includes a bonus track of "No More America" read by the author.

Genghis Tron
Board Up the House Remixes Vol. 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US The inaugural album in the ambitious "Board Up The House Remixes" SERIES opens with ZOMBI'S Steve Moore expanding the very beginning of "Board Up The House" into a sprawling European film noir soundtrack; Jesu's Justin K Broadrick takes the schizophrenic grind of "Colony Collapse" and transforms it into a dirty booty-bass track just screaming for a Missy Elliott hook; Rob Crow incidentally pioneers Mariachi-core by adding some Spanish guitar and festive vocals to "Things Don't Look Good"; and Eluvium reimagines the 10-minute closer "Ergot" as an outer space funeral dirge for the 24th Century. Packaged in a jacket featuring "remixed" album art by Jon Beasley, this pressing is a limited edition of 1,000 copies on a special colored vinyl that corresponds to the artwork. Future volumes in this series will be released by Lovepump United, Anticon, Crucial Blast and Relapse Records.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone, SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal). And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES: "One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone "Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse" - Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples" - SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream" --- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock, and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

Grubbs, David
Optimist Notes The Dusk (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US "A step into the void" is how Grubbs (GASTR DEL SOL) describes his first solo album since 2004. Here Grubb's presents five longish songs & one eleven-minute instrumental floor rumbler, and the album can't be said to fall in either a pop or experimental genre. Much like Gastr Del Sol's recordings, arrangements take their own sweet, otherworldly time to unfold, and you're likely to discover that the undertow is stronger than you reckoned & that you wind up a
disorienting distance from where you began.

PS, US Limited edition of 700 copies. Double LP pressing housed in a gatefold jacket. Being a Nabokovian and visceral garden of delights, a musical evocation of memory and desire spread over four sides of vinyl. The sound is conjured forth from dark wells to be birthed, twisting and screaming in silver winds. Recorded at Black Dirt Studios, over an intensive three day period of hermetic isolation, whilst snow blanketed the surrounding fields, this work is both more detailed and conjures a heavier, more brooding occult atmosphere and sound, than any previous Hototogisu release.

Interoceans (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US On 'Interoceans", I HEART LUNG blends first-take methods with Oblique Strategies: carefully composed, meticulously recorded pieces rooted in improvisation, revised and augmented over time. The results are a compelling vision of chaos and beauty as Chris Schlarb's electric guitar drones and Tom Steck's free-jazz drumming hold and flutter with shimmering acoustic guitars, soaring pedal steel and beautifully captured field recordings. When Kris Tiner's trumpet follows Nels Cline's electric sitar three minutes into "Interoceans II," it's like Don Cherry's loving spirit doting on universal music drones.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Lineland
Logos For Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US For a split second the actuality of language stood only to bear witness and inspire the sonic structures of love being erected around me, and in this moment I believed in principle of purpose. Only when English was interjected did I sense the imposing future and separate out the soundscape of this melodic passing clan from the music streaming through the speakers. Logos for Love presenting a variety of acoustic instrumentation pressed into each other with modern blips and squiggles like a structure of so much brightly colored modeling clay with an illuminated jeweled interior, embracing the ancient rhythms and language over the impeding future. Malcolm Felder creates streamlined, discretely layered electronic music informed by a taste for left-field pop ranging from Bruce Haack to Bollywood, Hüsker Dü to George Jones. After moving to Queens in 1998, he began composing as Lineland, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A. Abbott. Initial fourtrack Casio recordings grew into the album Pavilion (Audio Dregs 2003) over a three-year period, during which Felder expanded the material using music software on the home-built Dynavox 2000 computer and a growing array of vintage keyboards and novelty instruments. Songs have appeared on a few compilations and in several short independent films, including Back and Forthby James and Jeff Israel.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Marmoset
Record In Red (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US MARMOSET'S "Record In Red" is full of apples and cherries. With this, their second full-length, Marmoset have released a near masterwork of pop pleasure. Indeed, the 13 songs on "Record In Red" vary widely in style and sound, ranging from the Church-like acoustic stylings of "Golden Cloak" and "Torn Cup, Fly Up Above", the FAITH-era Cure tone of "Walking Thru The Lake", the moody pop melodies resembling Richard Davies' work with the Moles, the haunting confessional of "December 4th", the epic dementia of "Summertime Is Easy", to the Kim Deal inspired "Frendamine". Every song is decidedly different than the one before, but the album hangs together with a neurotic thread so fine that it's completely invisible to the gallery.

Melodium
Cerebro Spin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Melodium speaks; there starts a romantically slow game of pong between the hemispheres of brain. The sound speeds. I listen, and there is harmony now between the players, and reluctance towards competition. They play on. Melodically Melodium speaks. Faster, onward towards the polyrhythmic rally! All praise repetitive motion, be stilling thus Zen. The tones of play fashion an energetic path, a melodic relation of right and left. Only when Melodium pauses for a breath do I remember moments can be filled with splitting silence; that I am here and this is somewhere other then the pong game of my mind. Keep speaking. Melodium is the moniker of Laurent Girard, a rather prolific electronic musician from Nantes, France with an obsession for melodies. Weaving bits of guitar, piano, synthesizer, flute or bits of voice and texture to create patterns in sound and small personal soundtracks that are at once somber, while retaining a feeling of sunny optimism. Golden waves of sound with rough-hewn edges that sound both dreamy and melancholic and simultaneously warm and shiny.

Mercury Rev
Snowflake Midnight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, US Swirling atmospherics and mantra-like lyrics abound on Mercury Rev's newest work Snowflake Midnight. Recorded almost exclusively in the band's Catskills, N.Y. laboratory, Snowflake Midnight sees MR continue experiments with laser harps, ad-hoc computer programs and random note generators resulting in a record that moves with grace between avant garde and traditional pop sensibilities. Standout tracks "Butterfly's Wing" and "Senses on Fire" exhibit the emphasis on letting the music define itself, as free as possible from human interference. Zooming in at nearly any magnification, Snowflake Midnight appears to be a resplendent fractal folding in upon itself, into something continually new, unpredictable and spontaneous, and yet so subtly self-aware, that it never fails to resemble itself as a whole.

Michna
Magic Monday (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US Adrian Michna found his way as a DJ under his EGG FOO YOUNG alias, earning him an URB "Next 100" nod in the process. Production gigs for Bonde do Role & Diplo followed, allowing Michna to put his deftness at both the drum machine & the trombone to good use, creating tracks out of dense
blankets of sound & texture. Apart from the tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty & electro, it's the detailed process that makes Michna's debut album move. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the album is its rich element of musicality; in an era when hip-hop tracks have devolved into two-note keyboard loops, songs like "Skunk Walk" live up to their name with full-bodied funk & live horns. When Ghostly owner, Sam Valenti IV, asked Adrian which samples to clear, Adrian replied, "What samples?"

Nebulo
Avutma (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, GERMANY Avutma is the latest release by Nebulo after the album Kolia, two remixes for architect and Hecq, and even freely available Nebulo ringtones. The outstanding French artist Thomas P. with this CD has created a closed opus that might be seen as a concept album in which the listener has to decide what the concept is. Nebulo's subtle approach forms a complex fictitious scenery by using seemingly minimal resources that are more visible than ever. Electronically treated instruments like organ and piano, combined with synth layers and modified beats generate tempers that range from surreal to melancholic or even nearly frightening. Listening to 'Avutma' is like walking in a dimly lit basement never knowing what's behind the next curve, and who or what is actually casting these shadows on the walls... Nebulo's trademark, a connection between ambience, idm, clicks'n'cuts and postmusique- concrète collages is presented here once again. As a reviewer wrote: 'surreal dreamscapes painted with tears and sometimes even blood' - Avutma might be the soundtrack of today's grand guignol.

New Radiant Storm Kings
Drinking In The Moonlight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 7TH)
PS, US Northampton, MA/New York city indie rockers New Radiant Storm King deliver the tightest, hookiest and most diverse record in their distinguished career. Recorded over six months in deep, rural Massachusetts, Drinking in the Moonlight proves once again that guitarists/vocalists Peyton Pinkerton and Matt Hunter along with bassist Caleb Wetmore and drummer J.J. O'Connell write some of the most imaginative and memorable American rock. Approaching their twentieth year as a band, NRSK have gracefully matured as song smiths while retaining their prowess at crafting unconventional yet infectious melodies. Drinking in the Moonlight is a sonic mix of urban and rural, sporting distorted yet wiry pop with a marked focus on narrative within their song writing -- trademarks gratifying to longtime fans. Time spent in other bands (Pinkerton in The Silver Jews and The Pernice Brothers; Hunter in J. Mascis & The Fog and The Wharton Tiers Ensemble) has honed the Pinkerton/Hunter attack musically and lyrically. Over the course of thirteen songs, Drinking in the Moonlight addresses topics as varied as random street violence, infidelity and subsequent pregnancy, exorbitant winter heat bills and even an open condemnation of organized religion (Thank God -Ed). Drinking in the Moonlight was recorded with longtime NRSK engineer Mark Alan Miller (Cordelia's Dad, J. Mascis & The Fog) at his Slaughterhouse Studios in Westhampton, MA. NRSK will tour Fall 2008. TRACKS: 1) Soporific Slump - A few more pints and then back to your place on 1st Avenue. 2) Undignified - Hopefully you can convince everyone that you actually are being your natural self - and have been lying up until just now. 3) Senseless - If a random act of brutal violence changed your life for the better, how would you explain it to anyone? To yourself, even? 4) Islander - She could never handle the mainland for more than a few days at any given time. 5) Little Ice Age - Sometimes the idea of summer seems both impossible and absurd. 6) Anything Can Happen - And usually does, if you're lucky (or not). 7) New Paltz Waltz - Instrumental levity. 8) Eight Steps Closer - Slouching towards Echo Park, with a cosmo in her hand. 9) After the After Hours - Guns, drugs and hipsters - in way over their heads. 10) Midnight Comes - Time horizons always seem to stretch into forever on a first date. 11) Eraser - Lick your wounds and don't look back for a second. 12) Clouds Cover Everything - Are you really sure that your memories are totally your own? 13) Fall Prey - The world is flat. The sun revolves around it. We've progressed on so many fronts save one.

Noyes Brothers, The
Sheep From Goats (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, UK The Boutique Label presents the first ever CD reissue of Sheep From Goats by The Noyes Brothers, originally released in 1980 on the highly collectible Object Music label. The Noyes Brothers were Steve Solamar of cult band Spherical Objects and Steve Miro, who also recorded as a solo artist for Object. The album (a double set) as recorded between October 1979 and May 1980 at Graveyard Studios, and contain 100 minutes of experiments and improvisations, ranging from Eno-esque electronics to improvisation and side-long excursions such as A Good Question and It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time. Released in July 1980 in a limited edition of 1000 copies, it sounds like little else recorded before or since. Pioneering Manchester label Object Music ceased operations in 1981, after Steve Solamar resolve a lifelong contradiction by becoming a woman. As part of this process Solamar even destroyed his own master tapes, and since then the Object catalogue has languished in undeserved obscurity (with the exception of The Passage). However an Object anthology has now been released as part of the Auteur Labels series on LTM, as well as the complete Spherical Objects back catalogue on CD. The artist formerly known as Steve Solamar is alive and well, and lives a happy spiritual and musical life. Steve Miro resides in Glastonbury.

Croce Via (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, US A darker slant than their previous full length, OvO's guitars scrape & drums pound but the organic crunch & high fidelity of this release will convince you that this is music taken further & harder. An avant masterpiece, it takes cues from the tar covered hordes wearing jean jackets & introduces a very natural middle finger of wigginess. Stefania Pendretti's vocals soar for the sky & rest like a golden piece of corn in the steaming morass of dunt. Guitar undulates like a wriggling eel, with Bruno Dorella's drums providing crunching headburn.

PS, SWEDEN Park Hotell come from Luleå in Northern Sweden and they've been sneaking around the indie-scene for a while now. The members have played with both Mattias Alkberg BD and The Bear Quartet. In October Park Hotell will release their debut album. It was recorded in the Hives' Studio Gröndahl earlier this year. Demon producer Jari Haapalainen (Bear Quartet guitarist and producer for Ed Harcourt, Concretes and Camera Obscura) produced and played the drums, and the twin sisters Johanna and Miriam E. Berhan from Taxi Taxi! sang the backing-vocals. A bit less fuzzy-wuzzy and a bit more streamlined and jet-propelled these new recordings offer guitars that recalls Kevin Shields riding tempos stolen from The Wedding Present.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

Quinn, Donovan & The 13th Month
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US Donovan's steadily growing reputation as a first rate darkly romantic penman (thanks to contributions to The Skygreen Leopards & solo as Verdure) has culminated with his latest endeavor. Rather than aping or ducking genres, Quinn has crafted a bright spectrum of songs best described as 'American.' Xian folk, languid indie pop, VU cool, loner country & west coast psych are touchstones, with Quinn's singular lyrical abilities & taste for sun-baked song steadily at the fore. Ever the flower bed romantic, Quinn has - at the risk of over-simplification - written a classic "break-up record;" albeit filtered through surrealistic tenderness & riddled with red herrings & feelings of betrothal. Though not exactly lost in a sea of scarves, Quinn is indebted to the vulnerability, humor & bitterness present in the works of Ronnie Lane, Skip Spence, Nikki Sudden & Basement Tapes-era Dylan.

Rhino's newly REMASTERED & EXPANDED edition of this 1987 album classic features the original 11-song set plus 12 rare bonus tracks, half of them previously unreleased. The album was recorded in Memphis, TN with producer Jim Dickinson (whose association with Big Star forged the connection with the 'Mats). Memorable tracks include "Alex Chilton," "The Ledge," "I Don't Know," "Red Red Wine" and "Can't Hardly Wait." Tim [remaster, expanded re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US After emerging from and defining the Minneapolis music scene of the early 1980s and issuing a series of seminal releases on Twin/Tone, The Replacements signed to Sire Records mid-decade. The first of their four now-classic full-lengths for the label, TIM was also the band's last album fueled by the legendary original line-up of lead singer and songwriter Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars (drums) and brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson (guitar and bass, respectively). Rhino's newly edition of this 1985 tour de force features the original 11-song set remastered plus 6 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Produced by original Ramones drummer Tommy Erdelyi, TIM is #136 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time". Highlights include "Bastards Of Young," "Hold My Life," "Kiss Me On The Bus" and "Left Of The Dial." All Shook Down [remaster, expanded re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)

While it features lead singer and songwriter Paul Westerberg still making music with his fellow founding members Chris Mars (drums) and Tommy Stinson (bass), the album is generally considered to be essentially Westerberg's inaugural solo effort. Rhino's new edition features the original 13-song set remastered plus 11 bonus tracks, including 8 previously unreleased rarities. Stand-out tracks include "Sadly Beautiful," "Merry Go Round" and the title track. Among the 11 bonus cuts are 8 previously unissued demos, including ones for "Sadly Beautiful," "Happy Town," "When It Began" and "One Wink At A Time."

Richter, Max
24 Postcards in Full Colour (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US With his fourth album, Berlin-based MAX RICHTER further cements his status as one of the leading lights of modern composition. "24 Postcards In Full Colour" is a dazzling conceptual exercise of great beauty and emotional resonance. Each of the album's 24 tracks is a classically-composed ringtone, an evocative miniature whose theme, though fully developed, hints at a larger piece; thus Richter explores the fugitive nature of memory through reprises and repetition throughout this intriguing album. With a sonic pallette consisting of string quintet, solo piano, 16-track 2-inch tape, transistors, found shortwave radio, vinyl clicks, dust, scratches and rumble, and acoustic guitars, Richter's latest effort is both beautifully detailed and sonically rich.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have
been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

School of Seven Bells
Alpinisms (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, US Alpinism is an electronically enhanced pop record of dizzying highs & claustrophobic lows, whose painstaking conception shows in its detail-laden crevices. On the album's best tracks-the polyrhythmic dream-pop of "Face to Face in High Places," the nervous shimmer of "My Cabal," the menacing lilt of "Iamundernodisguise"-Curtis constructs layers of shoegazing, moire-patterned guitars, while Alejandra & Claudia Deheza intertwine their near-identical voices like the fingers of praying hands. Throughout, the whole heavenly affair is tethered to the ground with a glitchy, tribal thwomp. Technology collides with cryptic religious imagery and good, old-fashioned rock music.

Where Smithson's first album was wounded & tentative in it's approach, Earth Machine is strong & sure of it's footing. Where there was deep melancholy with a glimmer of hope in the former, the latter reaches it's winding paths out to further hills & valleys, encompassing a wide range of emotion. Songs seem to tell one long story as they segue into one another. Steinbruchel
Mit Ohne (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, US Limited edition: 500. Order now as this is limited and will not be reissued. Mit Ohne is a sound documentation of an audio/visual installation by Yves Netzhammer and Steinbrüchel. The installation entitled "The feeling of precise instability when holding things" was part of the group exhibition "Wohnträume/Wohnräume" exhibited from 26.07. to 28.09.2003 at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, Switzerland. The audio sections by Steinbrüchel where composed in sync with the visuals by Yves Netzhammer and succeed in translating and supporting the poetic vibrancy and slow morphing movements of the 3d rendered animation. For the exhibition an atmospheric fragile and detailed work was created involving a three-part projection and multichannel sound that conveys an abstract audio and visual approach to the environment surrounding us and the concept of a room itself. Each audio track takes the listener into a new form of "room" and simple patterns of single tones are layered into dense movements surrounding the listener's space. The crystalline polished sounds form a highly precise environment that interacts with particles of melodies searching for space to breathe. Between the tracks there are no pauses that give the dedicated listener the feeling of being moved suddenly from one room to the other. Space and silence are sensitively woven into each other while forming an atmospheric and organic surrounding. Through the sound the feeling in every room changes from dark to bright, from large to small, from lonely to crowded, from silent to loud. Ralph Steinbrüchel, born in 1969, studied Communication Design at Central Saint Martins School in London, where he acquired a Masters of Arts and Design with distinction. He now lives and works as a musician and graphic designer in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2002 his composition "zwischen.raum" [Domizil, Zurich, 2002] was distinguished with the Max Brand Award for Electronic Music [phonoTAKTIK.02 Festival, New York].

PS, SWEDEN Incredible new album, Pitchfork approved. If you thought the EP was great, just wait until this arrives. Folk album of the year? Price to be confirmed, it might be better, it won't be worse. PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

Tecumseh
Avalanche & Inundation (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, US The LP version of Tecumseh's Avalanche And Inundation is pressed in an edition of 500 copies with the first 200 on color vinyl. Heavy drone/heavy meditation. Be inside the sounds. Formed in 2004, Tecumseh creates drone metal of the heaviest variety although with more forward movement than some of their peers and with the addition of cold electronic hiss. Using 2 basses, electronics, percussion and guitar Tecumseh wrap themselves and their listeners in a warm sonic meditative slow motion blanket woven from their skilled use of sound and space. Avalanche And Inundation was recorded in the winter of 2008 with Jeremy Romagna (Yellow Swans, Trees, Silentist). " This is the perfect metallic drifting off music, almost like they've discovered some new genre, sludge-ambient, doom-age, whatever you decide to call it, it's pretty amazing, and fans of all things slow motion, downtuned and yes, heavy will dig this big time." Aquarius "The sound is sludgy and the pace snail-like but subtle. Within its monochrome scheme of blackness, and yet more blackness as its slow, slow, riffs unfurl there are small variations in tone. Such is the hermetically sealed inwardly directed feel of Tecumseh's sound thatthese tiny variations are like tiny rafts in an otherwise empty sea. And in the end the listening experience isn't some feat of endurance but strangely calming, it's blackness like a vast lake of crude oil with only the faintest of ripples disturbing it's surface." Ten Kens
Ten Kens (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US TEN KENS combine raw vocal delivery, driving rhythms, and heavy, reverb-laden guitars with idiosyncratic song structures, creating a fresh, immediate sound. Like avant-indie contemporaries Liars and Black Heart Procession, or predecessors like Sonic Youth or Mudhoney, Ten Kens' sonic ambition never comes at the expense of songcraft; layers of noise bolster, rather than undermine, their memorable melodies.

Tough Alliance, The
New Chance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US New album from Swedish duo, deconstructing pop from the brains down. PREFIX MAG: "The Tough Alliance's glowing sophomore full-length, A New Chance, opens with a brief call to prayer, which frames the rest of the album in the proper context: Band members Eric Berglund (who handles the singing) and Henning Fürst (who does the music) view pop music as totemic as religion. But that doesn't mean they're not above screwing with the formula. A New Chance is as much about deconstructing and reassembling great pop music as it is worshipping it."

USA Is A Monster
Space Program (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, US Buttery synth & elaborate vocal harmonies combine to levitate hairpieces at least a little bit. This is the perfect synthesis of their pastoral wanderings circe their second record & the punk spunk of the first & third full lengths. The band is still a NY two piece tribe of Native American obsessed truth salesmen. Their take on rock embraces proggy synth tones, elaborate harmonies & jaw dropping drum & guitar that is no accident, and can be seen in ragged glory when they come to your local rock hole this fall.

Auteur Labels: Object Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, UK 27 tracks. LTM present a new volume in the ongoing compilation series Auteur Labels, here profiling cult Manchester imprint Object Music. Active between 1978 and 1981, pioneering Manchester post-punk label Object Music was founded by songwriter and deejay Steve Solamar to release records by his own group, Spherical Objects. Their first album, Past & Parcel, arrived in August 1978. Object soon began releasing records by other artists, many of them active in the Manchester Musicians' Collective. After singles by Spherical Objects, the Passage, Steve Miro, Grow Up, Contact and others, in 1979 the label took the unusual step of concentrating on albums, releasing 7 in 12 months. However Object Music ceased operations in 1981 after Steve Solamar corrected a lifelong contradiction and became a woman. Auteur Labels: Object Music compiles tracks from singles released between September 1978 and July 1980, as well as select album tracks. Tracklist: SPHERICAL OBJECTS the kill; SPHERICAL OBJECTS the knot; STEVE MIRO & THE EYES dreams of desire; STEVE MIRO & THE EYES queen of the sea; GROW UP river; GROW UP stay awake; GROW UP 10 minutes; ALTERNOMEN UNLIMITED façade; WARRIORS martial time/martial law; STEVE MIRO up and about; STEVE MIRO smiling in reverse; SPHERICAL OBJECTS seventies romance; SPHERICAL OBJECTS sweet tooth; CONTACT fascinated by time; CONTACT nite time; THE PASSAGE troops out; THE PASSAGE my one request; MANCHESTER MEKON the cake shop device; IQ ZERO insects; GROW UP joanne; GROW UP swept away; GROW UP GGGDADGADADAD; STEVE SOLAMAR forewarned; THE NOYES BROTHERS the mutant; THE NOYES BROTHERS decision time; ALTERNOMEN UNLIMITED connections.

Teaism (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, UK Teaism is a compilation featuring a diverse range of artists, who each created a unique song based around the theme of music inspired by the art and culture of tea. An idea conceived and curated by Stefan Panczak (aka Inch-time), Teaism binds together 15 disparate tracks by a hand-picked selection of artists. From the opening gambit of Max de Wardener's Kettle Song, which chimes and charms, through to Cibelle's sashaying Mr & Ms Grey, the pivotal theme evokes a sense of reverie; a kaleidoscopic gamut of ideas brewed to concoct a heady mix of electronica, jazz, musique concrete-style cut-ups, cinematic tones and avant-garde composition. These all contribute towards what is a glistening patchwork of sounds and atmospheres; each of them different, yet with thematic and sonic undercurrents which unite them. Contained within are stately melodies from the likes of Lord Jim, spooky sound collages from Serafina Steer, the fresh-faced ambience of Inch-time and the shadowy electronic sounds of the Break-ups. There's also a digital folk-pop nugget from Tunng, nestling comfortably in the middle of the tracklisting, which embodies their lust for samples and found sounds, forged into absorbingly twisted shapes. This is immediately contrasted with root70's freewheeling jazz, while the likes of Carlos y Gaby and Oblong provide elegant and slow-building melodies, with AM/PM and Qua throwing glitches, clicks and whirs into the mix. Tying all of these strands together, Teaism takes the differing outlooks and arrangements and coaxes them into a cohesive whole, where a multitude of patterns and textures rub shoulders with each other and never sound out of place. Tea is capable of doing so many things: you can drink it to relax or inject much-needed impetus at the start of the day; it can accompany deep thought or fervent chat. It's this array of contradictions, or multiple purposes, which offers so many appealing possibilities. Likewise, the myriad sounds collected on Teaism represent their fair share of contrasts as well. At times warm and delicate, followed by moments of brooding intensity, this electronica-led compilation flits between different nuances, all the while remaining deft and magical. Teaism is available as a limited edition CD and features original artwork by Roy Ananda.

Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.
