Acid King
I I I
PS, US If you have not had the chance to be blown away
by their gut-wrenching, mind-numbing, explosive live sets,
then chances are you wouldn't notice them walking alongside
you on your morning trek to work, & that'd be a shame
because Acid King is the definition of stoner rock- bone-rattling,
ultra-low-end, fuzzed-out psychedelic stoner rock. Produced
w/ the help of San Francisco's legendary engineer Billy
Anderson, this is the album that they were born to make.
Filled w/ thundering, low-end, fat-ass riffs, III will
redefine the word heavy for years to come.

Volumes 11:111
PS, US John Zorn's white trash metal cousins. As with many
of Zorn's Naked City albums, listening to this is like
listening to a radio whose tuning controls have been taken
over by an ADD kid, only every station in playing instrumental
blocks of Iron Maiden & Motorhead. More than 70 minutes
of music here & at least as many guitar solos & genre
changes. Not a "that band kicked ass" but more
of a "I'm missing a tooth, my head hurts & I don't
wanna work tomorrow" ass kicking

Banhart, Devendra & Jana Hunter
S/T
PS, US Devendra Banhart plays in the band Vetiver. His
solo work has garnered tons of attention from the likes
of the NY Times, Spin, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly,
and NPR. His signature voice and stellar musicianship have
made him a sort of household name with indie rockers. On
the flip, Jana Hunter's songs are sparse with just an acoustic
guitar and beautiful voice over hallucinatory pre-recorded
soundscapes. Haunting, devastating, and wonderful. These
songs are exclusive to this release. Colored vinyl.

Birthday Massacre, The
Violet
PS, US The Birthday Massacre formed in 2000 as Imagica.
The following year they moved to Toronto and changed their
name. Their first album, "Nothing And Nowhere",
came out in 2002. Two years later, they self-released the
EP "Violet". Metropolis took notice, and is now
re-releasing "Violet" with four extra tracks.
The band's sound blends different genres of music, but
maintains a retro cinematic flavor. Mixing themes of horror
and tragedy with fun and satire, they create a unique and
versatile sound by combining new wave and hard rock elements.
With the fusion of keyboards and guitars, the lyrics tell
a story which creates an emotional tone full of darkness
and tragedy. "Violet" is a deeply moving album.

but as long as he keeps things kinda fresh by putting all
his influences in such a great album I won't stop listening
to his releases. And this is a real BAND effort so that
may explain some new elements. I think this album mixes
all his previous albums pretty well together: the repetitive
rock of Ché's Sounds of Liberation, the smooth grooves
of Jalamanta, '80s & jazz influences from ...The Operators,
the coolness of Keep Your Cool, the melancholy of Local
Angel & of course the sweaty desert vibe of that K

Cat Heads, The
Our Frisco
PS, AUSTRALIA This classic album from San Francisco heroes
of the early 90s is as sublime today as it was then. Once
there was a band called the Catheads. Then they became
The (ex) Cat Heads. These are their songs. Originally released
on vinyl in 1990 on Twitch City, Lamingtone's deluxe CD
reissue of Our Frisco is digitally remastered by Wally
Sound (Zombie Heaven box set), and contains four previously
unreleased bonus tracks and additional photographs. Starting
off the album is "Too Little Too Late". Listen
to the lyrical bass, jangling guitars, its broken promise
sentiment with the bouncing melody. "Anti Song" with
its twirly dance vibe and the verve of a psychedelic protest
song. "Anti Song" is about everything. "This
song doesn't want to sell you an identity / This song doesn't
want to tell you what you want to hear / This song doesn't
make you want to love your country / This song doesn't
bring the revolution any nearer...". it is a rare
delight to find an album where every song forms a part
of a greater whole - Our Frisco is such a recording. Listen

Cursive
Difference Between Houses And Homes, The (Lost Songs And
Loose Ends 1995 - 2001)
PS, US Ten years since their formation, Cursive offer this
collection of two previously unreleased songs and ten sought
after tracks from their out-of-print 7-inches. Also includes
a 24-page booklet featuring the story that is the album's
namesake, written by front man Tim Kasher and illustrated
by Eastern
Youth artist Yuriko Yoshino. Each song is replete with
thoughtful composition, offset by Kasher's now signature
howl. Building from soft, nuanced intros to anthemic finishes
that sear, many songs evoke the cathartic swell for which
Cursive have become known. Suburban discontent; romantic,
familial,
and platonic relationships in trouble; feelings of isolation
- all are set against Cursive's delicate balance between
calamity and refrain. This isn't an album only for fans.
It's a cohesive release in its own right, telling the story
of a band, its label, and a group of friends.

PS, US Mixing dark, fuzzy stoner rock riffs with classic
rock sensibilities & addictive song-writing hooks,
this album occupies the gaping void somewhere between Queens
Of The Stone Age, AC/DC & Black Sabbath. It's both
as heavy & serious as that sounds, yet has a mischievous & fun-filled
heart beating underneath the guitar weilding heaviness
that is wild, unhinged & damn fun to listen to. Enhanced

Frog Pocket
Gongalot
PS, US Self-described "splatter-beat folk" w/previous
releases on electro-folk bellweather labels Mouthmoth and
Benbecula. Hails from Ayr in the west of Scotland. Gonglot,
his debut full length album, features songs culled from
between 1999 and 2005, many originally self-released on
his own Mouthmoth label. Incorporating unquantized drum
beats with fiddle, mandolin, processed guitar and vocals--
all recorded live to four-track-- Frog Pocket has maintained
his credibility both as a Scottish musician and contemporary
electronic performer. The folk-inflected melodies of Gonglot
owe more to Celtic traditional music than the American
folk-rock/electronic crossover currently in vogue. Its
pastoral theme has a tradition in electronic music running
back through Boards Of Canada to Aphex Twin and originally
Ultramarine. To know the music is to love the man, and
his quirky, somewhat misinterpreted demeanor only adds
to his mystique. The fractured AFX-like beats, alongside
some truly beautiful melodies and such an energetic live
act, sit at odds with a character so unassuming and modest.

and have shared stages with Unicorns, TV On The Radio,
Ted Leo, Of Montreal, Joan Of Arc, Denali, and The Rogers

to break out of Philly. Some say their sound is a little
Goth with groove, like The Cure's "Head On The Door",
or power-wave like Duran Duran's "Seven And The Ragged
Tiger". The band likes to refer to this album as "80's
roller skating music played by a metal band."

Made In China
PS, US The latest outing from Juliana Hatfield picks up

steely commitment to stark instrumentation & impenitent

label, Ye Olde Records, is an artist's dream; Juliana notes, "Now

Speed The Parting Guest
PS, US The 2nd album from Cambridge, MA trio of Greg Kelley,
Wayne Rogers, & Kate Village. Speed is a carefully
paced but blazing affair that shows how seamless a unit
they've become. In contrast to the abstract feel of their
debut, this album finds them swinging large blocks of sound
around their heads for hours before launching them at you.
Their wall of sound is now a sonic universe that they can
manipulate w/ slow malice or lightning precision.

Hollingsworth, Taylor
Tragic City
PS, US "Taylor Hollingsworth and his band are sloppy
and wild in the mode of The Stooges or The MC5 (or The
Rolling Stones at their worst), which are likely models,
yet this band's overall tone often recalls bands such as
The Only Ones or The Heartbreakers. If they played fast
and hard instead of loose and slinky, they could even be
The Saints. A lot of the sloppiness is salvaged, or accented,
by white-hot guitar runs that take the sound into Johnny
Thunders territory, by way of Billy Gibbons. Vocals, for
the most part, remain in the more disturbing/intriguing
range of Peter Perret and Nikki Sudden, so you can see
why it is difficult to accept this band's approach as just
a happy accident" - Black & White.

Holopaw
Quit +/Or Fight
PS, US Gainesville, Florida's Holopaw (named after a Florida
town none of them are from) rise to more textural, delicate
artistic heights on this follow-up to their 2003 Sub pop
self-titled debut. Each dynamic track tells its tale through
sweet, understated, and complexly orchestrated melody that
engages as it soothes. Thick with strings, winds, drunken
bossanova percussion, stomping, handclaps, wine bottles,
synths, and thrift store furniture-as-instruments, the
album shows a band unafraid of brash creativity and improv
instrumentation. Holopaw has toured extensively with label-mates
Iron And Wine.

PS, US This debut solo effort is comprised of 18 wonderfully
short pieces, that seamlessly combine a vivid assortment
of synthetic tones & textures, w/ the homespun intimacy
of acoustic instruments & a beautiful voice, showing
us a sincere, gentle & warm side of the artist that
we might not detect so immediately when listening to the

groups are known for.

PS, US This combines the "get in the van" urgency
of a forgotten era of SST-influenced punk rock with an
awe-inspiring precision & swagger of late '80s American
thrash metal. The heir apparent to the throne of the resurgent
Louisville hardcore scene, LORDS deliver their unique brand
of volatile thrash in a blaze of towering riffs, near heretical
rants & throttling drums. Somehow LORDS cram a punishing

Merry-Go-Round
Listen Listen: The Definitive Collection
PS, UK Of all the cult west coast 1960's groups, perhaps
the most talked about and referenced over the last few
years have been The Merry Go Round, though bizarrely, the
last reissue of their work was a Rhino vinyl best of in
1984! Boy genius Emitt Rhodes left the drum seat in The
Palace Guard to front his own band recruited from the disbanding
Gene Clark Group among others. Signing to A&M they
quickly scored two hits "Live" and "You're
A Very Lovely Woman", and a superb album, getting
Emitt covers by such as Fairport Convention, before themselves
disbanding as Emitt became more and more interested in
recording in his home studio than touring. They had, however,
cut a large quantity of material, and when Emitt briefly
became a solo star with his home recorded albums on Dunhill,
some of it was released by A&M. Here for the first
time ever, is a comprehensive anthology of the work of
this most enigmatic of LA pop groups - one whose links
to Gene Clark, The Grass Roots, Paul McCartney, Curt Boettcher
and Herb Alpert (on whose 1967 TV special they featured)
emerge in the detailed notes. A superb collection and one
of the greatest releases of the year, I'll bet!

Minotaur Shock
Maritime
PS, US Minotaur Shock is David Edwards, lead singer of
Bronze Age Fox, electronic musical marvel, and remixer
du jour. His records of the last five years, while nodding
in the direction of Boards Of Canada, Manitoba, and FourTet,
have managed to avoid the folktronica scene. As much as
he admires
luminaries like Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, and Philip Glass,
he also carries a heavy torch for FM rockers Steely Dan
and The Cars. This new record is a more upbeat affair.
It's the sound of "mutant-disco" with David trying
to play guitar like David Gedge of The Wedding Present. "Warmth,
not trickery, is Minotaur's aim, a target struck with confidence
and skill" - Q.

PS, US Originally released in the US on Thrill Jockey in
late 1997, "Autoditacker" is Mouse On Mars's
most successful domestic release, scanning over 15,000
copies. Now re-issued, this album finds the band continuing
to grow and improve, adding textures and detail to their
dense, electronic soundscapes
without compromising their sound. They're still indebted
to Krautrock and dub, but they continue to add new sounds
and styles to their music, including long ambient stretches
and flirtations with drum and bass. "Germany's greatest

Orange Juice
The Glasgow School
PS, US The legendary Scottish band Orange Juice were revolutionary
innovators, both musically and commercially. They were "indie" before "indie" was
a word, and their subtly provocative sound and image was
unlike anything anyone had ever heard. And while they never
really landed a big hit, or made their way across the pond
with much fanfare, their offspring most certainly did.
One listen to The Glasgow School will throw the floodgates
wide open. Their delicate melodies, disco basslines, and
sexy masc/fem ambiguity were unlike anything anyone had
ever heard - and to this day, they resound with timelessness.

Picastro
Red Your Blues
PS, UK Picastro (From Toronto, Canada) have received much
praise for their broodingly beautiful, melancholic soundscapes,
in which cello alternates with frontwoman Liz Hysen's submerged,
murmured vocals. Picastro's string-laden dynamics share
a kinship with the music of fellow Canadians Godspeed You!
Black Emperor, as well as The Dirty Three and Rachels.
The band have played shows with Godspeed, Mick Turner (of
The Dirty Three), Smog, Elliot Smith, Cat Power, Herman
Düne, Cerberus Shoal and Thee More Shallows. You may
already be familiar with their music from the use of a
track from the album in the hit Kiefer Sutherland TV drama
'24'. Liz Hysen also appears on Cerberus Shoal's new album
'Bastion of Itchy Preeves' and Dwayne Sodahberk's new album
'Unfortunately' (Tigerbeat6). Other band members include
Owen Pallett (The Hidden Cameras), Evan Clarke (Burn Rome
in a Dream), Zak Hanna (Bush League, ex-Pecola) and Rachel
McBride. In Liz's spare time she likes to make films on
super 8 or digital video, Zak is a handy craftsman who
fixes guitars and other domestic goods, Owen makes kites
and Evan spends time at school studying philosophy of physics.
Rachel the scientist is very busy and if she is not at

Rainbow Ffolly
Sallies Fforth
PS, UK For many years, this has remained one of the most
enigmatic and collectable artifacts from the original Golden
Age of British pop-psych... beloved by serious collectors,
Austin Powers ook-alikes and oddly enough, the dance music
DJ community alike, the price of this mysterious band's
one and only album, already at £200 by the mid-1990's,
continues to soar.... but why? Who on earth were they?
A classic Britpsych cover conceals a masterpiece which
*might* be serious or might be a send up. High Wycombe's
most famous period export (along with Zandra Rhodes) continues
to both puzzle and amaze. Four art school boys who recorded
an album's worth of amazing, dayglow music in an independent
studio and ended up selling it to Parlophone Records and
rubbing shoulders with The Beatles who, along with The
Who and The Moody Blues, namechecked our heroes regularly.
It sounds like time you heard what everyone is so worked
up about! Track list: She's Alright / I'm So Happy / Montgolfier
/ Drive My Car / Goodbye / Hey You / Sun Sing / Sun And

Richmond Fontaine
Fitzgerald, The
PS, US The follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed "Post
To Wire" is a quiet departure from the raucous, visceral
send-ups that have made these Portland-based rockers a
band to watch. Written at the Fitzgerald Casino in chief
songwriter Willy Vlautin's hometown of Reno, this album
is a stark collection of songs about the people who live
in the shadows of a casino town. It contains the most vivid
and compelling songs the band has written to date. It debuted
at #13 on the UK Indie Chart in May, and Richmond Fontaine
are again experiencing the kind of praise rarely bestowed
on any artist. "The most
beautiful sad album of the year" - Q. "'The Fitzgerald'

Shipwreck
Origin
PS, US In keeping with their moniker local Champaign-Urbana
scene heroes Shipwreck rocks slowly to and fro in an ocean
of sound, a sound defined as "sub-aquatic country
and ethereal astro-punk" . Where their debut "Six
Buttery Megahits EP" (also available), collected of
songs from Shipwreck's precocious infancy, "Origin" finds
our sonically-seafaring trio in full-blown studio-marvelousness.
Can a band sound like Pedro The Lion and mid-period Wire
(154) in the same song? Why yes, they can. Definitely one
of the most interesting local bands.

Sea Storm Blows Plus
PS, US Debut album fromthis 5 piece band out of Sweden,

handsomely breezy pop songs; frolicsome & playful,

glorious string arrangements & resplendent piano playing.
Atop everything else is Magnusson's affecting voice that's

American Minor
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, US Local boys (Champaign via West Virginia) make good...
AMG Review: "Musical fads may come and go, but it
seems like no matter what year, the hard-edged blues-boogie
of the '70s (the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, etc.) will always
serve as inspiration for a new generation of rockers. After
all, the '80s saw the emergence of the Black Crowes, the
'90s saw Lenny Kravitz, and in the early 21st century,
American Minor is following in the others' footsteps. Hailing
from the Kanawha River Valley of southern West Virginia,
the five-piece band is not afraid to wear their influences
on their sleeves. Produced by one-time Blind Melon bandmates
Brad Smith and Christopher Thorn, the songs on American
Minor's self-titled, full-length debut prove to be not
quite as hook heavy as the aforementioned retro acts. But
the group has a more apparent hard rocking edge, which
will appeal to the headbangers. Chockfull of bluesy leads
and soulful vocals, organ also plays a prominent part in
American Minor's sound, as evidenced by such tracks as "Mr.
Queen." But the best bits are when the boys crank
the amp's up to ten -- on "Shine" and album opener "Walk
On," quite possibly the album's best track." (Greg
Prato)

Banhart, Devendra
Cripple Crow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 13TH)
PS, US This is his fourth studio album and first in the
US through XL Recordings. Devendra exploded on the international
music scene three years ago, quickly accumulating devoted
fans as well as an unusually hefty amount of critical kudos
with his debut and subsequent releases. "There's something
about Banhart's muse that defies words and logic, something
to these songs that hints at a deeper connection to the
cosmos than most of us share. Jeff Buckley might have had
that gift; John Lennon and Van Morrison certainly did.
Add to that list Devendra Banhart, an astonishing talent
whose future work promises to bring us to exciting new
places" - Harp Magazine. "...it's Banhart's gift
for melody that ultimately carries the day, littering the
album with slyly entrancing tunes that recall the pleasure
of old campfire songs. It's enough to cure even a hardened
cynic" - Blender.

Insignificance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 18TH)
PS, US Insignificance is the result of two years of intensive
work and the culmination of seven years of exploration
and growth by this unusual and powerful Brooklyn-based
band. After the critcal success of Barbez's self titled
full length debut on Important Records, they've returned
with a groundbreaking sophmore album and a new Theremin
player who Bob Moog has called the single "greatest
living" Theremin player on Earth. While Insignificance
maintains Barbez's trademark ethno-punk-cabaret, the compositions
have become more tight, more spacious, more frenetic and
more explosive. Insignificance has more of a compositional
complexity and careful instrumentation than Barbez's debut,
promising to be a classic in this burgeoning sub genre
known as Punk-Cabaret. Insignificance was recorded, mixed
and co-produced by legendary New York engineer/producer
Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth, Dresden Dolls, John Zorn)
at BC studios near the Gowanus canal in Brooklyn.

PS, US Joel Peterson wrote this record without any input
from fellow band members. "I think it was because
of that separation from other people's input that the writing
style shifted. I found myself keeping things a little more
elemental; steering away from programming, opting for sparser
percussion, and keeping instrumentation as minimal as songs
could take. The lyrics became a lot more direct and the
vocal style kind of followed suit. It just didn't seem
appropriate to layer these things that were said in pretty
bare, straightforward terms with a ton of effects...I wanted
to at least make myself feel something through music, and
it seemed that the best way to do that was just to be as
real and honest as possible."

family, loved ones and lost ones surface gracefully, contributing
depth to the narrative journey. "Noah's Ark" is
the result of a rootless reality, a drifting consciousness
across state lines, date lines, time lines...connected

songs is always issued from a tender present.

Conrad, Tony
Bryant Park Moratorium Rally (1969) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE
AUGUST 16th)
PS, US An October afternoon in 1969. Midtown Manhattan.
A rally in Bryant Park against the Vietnam War. Down 42nd
Street towards Times Square, Tony Conrad is adjusting microphones
in his 5th floor loft, one directed at the TV set - where
it will pick up live local news coverage -- the other pointing
out the window, where the echo of speeches and crowd noise
mingles with the oceanic rush of crosstown traffic. As
the event is about to begin, he rolls tape. Thirty-four
years later, we hear what he heard. And the juncture, for
so many reasons, could not be more critical. As the Bush
Administration pursues a risky military agenda in the Middle
East - one with unsettling long-term implications both
at home and abroad - we see a nation not divided, as in
the Vietnam Era, but strangely complacent. Our media-saturated
reality functions like a drug, instantly televised warfare
a new entertainment, and organized public dissent a novelty
at home and a roaring chorus everywhere else. Conrad's
recording of the Oct. 15 Vietnam Moratorium Rally is an
eerie flashback that offers urgent new insights into our
own lives and times, post-9/11 and full on into a new millennium.

Dialog Cet
Like Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, SWEDEN It is historically proven that a good band rarely
stands still. This hypothesis is made into scientific fact
when analyzing the elements. The key element in question
is Dialog Cet. A band with humble beginnings in Jönköping,
Sweden, in the year of 1998. A band that has been receiving
praise for their ingenuity, playfulness, and forward thinking
from their very onset. Playing a brand of music self-dubbed
as "Labyrinth Punk", which lies somewhere between
Sonic Youth, Unwound, and Scandinavian abstract reasoning.
Receiving praises even from the post-punk luminary Ian
Mackaye (of Fugazi fame) as "brilliant, fucking brilliant".
Music not afraid to move or perplex you...open your ears
and sound the alarm. Dialog Cet have allowed their experimental
side come free but at the same time maintained their pop
sensibilities that were displayed on their last album "Konsumera
Era". In this journey that is otherwise called an "album",
we are introduced to many wild and unusual creatures. Like
the spirited "Mazzrilla Gorialla", where guitars,
pianos, and frantic drumming whirl around in a wild dance.
Or the rambling lo-fi trails of "Dragonfly",
with acoustic guitars and quivering vocals. And before
you thought you saw it all the approach- able "Dolphin
Lundgren" that is covered in synths and guitar plunks
that create a deep-sea mood. "Like Animals" is
a large album with many contrasts. It spins wildly and
calmly floats, it hits hard but softly caresses, and it
howls monotonous and caws with many notes!

Konsumera Era (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, SWEDEN Travelling into the nether regions of music
Jönköping, Sweden's Dialog Cet released their
third album "Konsumera Era" in 2003. The tale
of this band is one of musical and musician mathematics.
Initially a two piece instrumental group on their debut "Crocodile
Hunt", then to a three piece on the critically acclaimed "Ny
Metall" album. In 2002, they went back to be a two
piece, using additional musicians to record "Konsumera
Era". Eerily similar at times to early Bailter Space
(still one of New Zealand's finest exports) Dialog Cet's
sonic attack combines early 90s Chicago/Minneapolis post-punk
dissonance to the weird rock/labyrinth-punk drive that
Dialog Cet are known for!

PS, US Another long-lost gem (in a possibly infinite series)
on Atavistic's UMS. Originally waxed in 1974 and released
in a microscopic private pressing on the LST label, this
record showcases Mr. Scherf on a variety of reeds and piano,
Jacek Bednarek on bass, and a very young Paul Lovens on
drums. The entire package has a subtle whiff of Krautrock
throughout, but the then nascent Euro Free Music sound

PS, US NYC's The Double deliver their Matador debut, a
worthy successor to 2004's "Palm Fronds". The
massed Ace Tone/Vox/Casio keys and floating
vocals have led some staff members to liken the sound to
music as diverse as '60s British folk mixed with theatrical
synth bands. But the
spooky/paranoid vibes and insistent, inventive rhythms
of the percussion build up a wall of sound more nervous
and intense than the comparison might suggest. Irresistible
pop melodies are laid on top. An indescribable and lovely
mess.

couple tunes self-recorded by a teenaged Devendra Banhart

by himself on an uninhabited island, eccentric bedroom
rock 'n' roll from French MCs Spleen & Zen, and piano
musings that even Sierra Casady can't remember recording.

Fite, Tim
Gone Ain't Gone (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 13TH)
PS, US Fite approaches music-making with little more than
his four favorite chords, a love of Woody Guthrie and Public
Enemy, and a stack of other people's sadly forgotten records.
The emerging sound is like no other: natural, unique and
teeming with fresh blood. While Fite is by no means a virtuosic
instrumentalist, he knows how to build a compelling song.
His primary talent lies in his knack for finding, stealing,
and transforming other people's music into his own, utilizing
his resonant voice to lend a disquieting emotional sincerity
to the mix. "Gone Ain't Gone", a wry, anachronistic,
copyright-defying,
country/hip-hop collage, was made mostly from CDs rescued
from dollar bins of Australian bar bands, DC garage-punks,
and demos from up-and-never-coming rock bands. It's all
sampled, looped and laid down as the blueprint for his
intriguing avant-folk vision of musical crime and resuscitation.

Flotation Toy Warning
Bluffers Guide to the Flight Deck (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE
AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Flotation Toy Warning's ambitious debut album, Bluffer's
Guide to the Flight Deck, cements this London five-piece
as modern masters of their own brand of baroque, experimental
pop. The US press is already raving about the release -
Pitchfork raved that "it's a muted pulse and gleaming
sheets of guitar. It's a human chorus channeling the great
cosmic mouth of Brian Eno's "2/1", slowly chewing
on humming organs and live drums. It's the Flaming Lips
imitating Scott Walker." It's not just Pitchfork who
are excited about the release - there was a recent feeding
frenzy on MP3 blogs, NPR profiled a song on a recent episode
of All Songs Considered and Magnet are doing a featured
review, where Flotation Toy Warning are profiled as the
best new band in the August/September issue. With one foot
in the eyebrow-raising pop experiments of Van Dyke Parks,
Scott Walker, and The United States of America, and the
other foot planted firmly alongside such modern-day avant-pop
practitioners as the Unicorns, Flaming Lips, or Tindersticks
, Flotation Toy Warning blend found sounds, electronics,
homemade and traditional instruments and lush production.
Their dreamlike pop soundscapes are simultaneously classic
and undeniably modern. Wonderfully warped and deranged,
Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck is the rare masterwork
that sounds equally skewed through a set of headphones
or blasting at top volume.

Thinking Of You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 13TH)
PS, US Six years have passed since the release of Freakwater's
last album, "End Time". Using their uniquely
askew take on honky-tonk, bluegrass, and country-politan,
Freakwater invariably make records easily distinguishable
from one another while maintaining their signature sound.
Label mates Califone join them on this release, creating
a record both modern and timeless in its instrumentation
and sentiment. The outcome is complex and subtly nuanced
with remarkable balance and fluidity. Like the album cover's
tongue-in-cheek greeting card image of a burning bouquet,
the music
itself represents an exquisite blend of beauty, horror,
and inexplicable optimism.

From Monument To Masses
Schools Of Thought Contend (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER
13TH)
PS, US This San Francisco 3-piece is constantly pushing
the boundaries of instrumental post-rock, combining layers
of guitar loops, driving polyrhythm and
breakbeats, and sampled sound into emotional, ever changing
song structures. While they avoid the pop music standards
of lead vocals, verse-chorus-bridge song structures, and
radio-friendly song lengths, they also make a conscious
effort to limit their instrumental experimentation and
the
suffocating artiness of highbrow indie wankery in favor
of tunes that remain grounded in driving rock sensibility.
Influences include Refused, Fugazi,
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and DJ Shadow. This release
finds the band collaborating with a diverse group of artists,
resulting in new musical directions and radical interpretations
of songs from their previous full-length. Sounds range
from indie and electronic pop to drum and bass and post-rock.

Gayle, Philip
The Mommy Row (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US The Mommy Row is guitarist Philip Gayle's monstrous,
magma opus; the biggest, jaw-popping swallow one can now
take in the upper/outer echelon of free thinking acoustic
voyagers. This gent's three previous solo records collected
smitten global praise yet held no clues this would be next.
Recorded in pristine audiophile splendor, the NYC-via-Houston-based
Gayle multi-tracked himself in duo, trio, hell ¬- sextet
catacombs of 12-string guitar, aluminum egg bar, prepared
toy piano, baritone ukulele, hand held cymbals, classical
guitar, gongs plus an isle more of stringed wood and tempered
metals. At its core, Gayle locks these spatial clusters,
subtracting adding or multiplying the bent themes that
pass between, into a cohesive oft melodic form that shows
itself in genius flashes. Orbiting an overtly damaged sphere
risen from Derek Bailey, Sun City Girls, Thelonius Monk,
Christopher Tree, Harry Bertoia, and years of bedroom perfection,
these pieces owe most to the moment of recording. Gayle's
style remains totally unique, crossing itself with Oriental
motifs, classical, humor, flamenco and free improv leanings

Black American Blues music is ingrained into the cultural
DNA of even a middle-aged, white, middle-class citizen
of the United States. Also I am forced to realize how foreign
those methods of expression might seem to artists born
into European history...so I think that this set of pieces
is about a feeling, if it is meant to be connected to the

masterfully create a dense sediment of tetonic drone with

The Hototogisu are obviously season sonic travelers, featuring
the seminal legend Matthew Bower (Skullflower, Sunroof!)

is one enormous composition, nearing 2 hours in length,
unfolded and nailed together in 7 movements. Starting with
a slow drone electronic crawl and climaxing with crackling
bone percussion buried howls of haunted minds, Ghosts Of
The Sun cries out from beneath an earthquake of guitar
feedback and distortion. Ghosts Of The Sun compresses eternity,
from the creation of humanity to it's own destruction,
into 7 parts on one double album. This is epic and total

He Knows the Sun (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 22ND)
PS, SWEDEN In 2003 and 2004 The Legends received world
wide recognition with the hyped debut "Up against
the Legends". Now The Legends return with an album
that is bound to take the world by surprise. "Public
Radio" echoes of the early 80's and sounds futuristic
at the same time. They mix influences from bands like New
Order, Felt, Feelies and The Cure with their own pop aesthetics
and turn it into something utterly wonderful and new. "He
knows the sun" is the first single from "Public
Radio". Besides the title track, which might be one
of this years best pop songs, The Legends deliver two brand
new non-album tracks and a bouncy Jimahl's remix. From
the debut to now The Legends have transformed from a 9-piece
band to a one-man project. At least officially. The truth
is that both "Up against the Legends" and "Public
Radio" were recorded, written, played and produced
by Johan Angergård (also member of Acid House Kings
and Club 8). Johan explain: - When I start recording an
album I have a very clear idea of what I want to do and
by doing everything myself the album comes out exactly
the way I want it to. Involving other people might only
blur the vision. "Up against the Legends" was
released on Lakeshore (US), PonyCanyon (Japan), Under Cover
(France) and Labrador (the rest of the world) hyped for
their upbeat and Motown inspired indie pop. Track list:
1. He knows the sun, 2. Books, 3. He knows the sun (Jimahl
RMX), 4. Inside out. Here's some of what what the US press
wrote about the debut: "A solid, surprising album
whose rewards are commensurate with the time you spend
with it." 8/10 PITCHFORK MEDIA. "Indie pop in
2004 doesn't get any better than this" ALL MUSIC GUIDE.

Maquiladora
A House All On Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 15TH)
PS, US This is the natural sound of the southwest corner
of Alta California aglow in warm sunshine and awash in
the cool blue pacific. This is the sound of the golden
landscape, a buzz with honey bees, sea breezes, and the
spirit of both the natives and the first intrepid Californio
souls who came to love and live here. Maquiladora harness
the mojo of this unique and still relatively culturally
unknown and mostly misunderstood region. For lack of a
better genre classification, let's say they play Western,
desert-folk, country/rock... of the mellowest and most
gently mind expanding kind. The trio record themselves
in the attic studio of Phil's 1911 bungalow in downtown
San Diego. Maquiladora: "The sun light shifted moods.
the seasons passed. we sweat and froze in the attic of
old Luisa crafting this record. It's now our tenth year
together in close quarters. We've seen many colors change,
drifting together, then apart then together again. The
southwest does that to you at desert, ocean and city speed.
The orange city lights in the early summer call us to meet
again. This record is focused and relaxed. We mixed it
ourselves, had Joe Plummer play the drums, took our time
with it, did other stuff, came back in a colder season
and started up again. The songs are of middle and lower
California amidst the blooming desert, the swirling ocean
air, and the storied nights of most western cities. The
place inside the place. As the moving darkness and moonshine
fell on us through the skylights we did some work and talked
about reference points. We grew older, over cigarettes,
and our songs changed. It's important to know that with
three voices and songwriters we've been through a lot together
and if you listen closely you can hear that. Like the familiarity
you have with the sound of the leaves of the tree you live
near, or the ocean sounds after 20 years of hearing, of
being. We've put out a lot of music, but to stand and sing
some of these new songs has been different. It is a different
place now. A subtle shift of expression and voice. It's
been moving for us and we have some hope it may move you.
And so, we've wrapped up our thoughts and called it "a
house all on fire" a transformation away from yesterday
.....let 'it breathe... let 'it breathe. "These reclusive
Californian's do for country music what Radiohead did for
Brit pop: dismantle the machine and rebuild it with alien
parts. Andrew Paine Bradbury.

PS, US Indie-pop flaunting substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop.
Recorded, produced & chiefly knob-twisted by the band
itself. This is 11 steps further into the forward-thinking,
angular rock canon. Weaving through territories long established
by '70s prog-rockers, '80s proto punks, & '90s art
rock mind fucks, MINUS THE BEAR invokes the modern love
affair between dance-driven strategy, & lush, Upper
Pacific sweater rock. This album muses on urges of the

Montgolfier Brothers
Journey's End (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 17TH)
PS, UK 4 track EP + 2 videos. Manchester's Roger Quigley
(At Swim Two Birds) and Mark Tranmer (Gnac) present their
first new material since 2002's The World Is Flat (Poptones).
The critically-acclaimed duo, whose distinctive sound blends
the music of Nyman's minimalism and Legrand's tinkling
melodiousness with a lyricism mirroring the humor in despair
of Chaplin's Limelight, return to the Vespertine organization,
which released their debut album, 1999's Seventeen Stars.
Quigley's unblinking dissections of relationships on the
turn, the main theme of the first two albums, make way
for a more serene exploration of the changing face of his
home town and his place within it, all delivered in his
trademark deep, intimate tones. Journey's End sees The
Montgolfier Brothers finally reach their destination. 'Sky-lines
change, memories still remain... Some friends stay, some
make their escape... ' In a coffee shop or bar, they're
there. Invariably alone, in the same seat, at the same
time of day, quietly watching their little piece of Manchester
change. Around long enough to remember buildings constructed
and the same ones demolished in their own lifetime. And
around long enough to see the people in their lives go
the same way. 'I've walked these streets, I've known this
place too long... And now you've gone, got used to being
alone...' The capitulation of the defeated soul. Echoing
Sinatra's A Man Alone, The Montgolfier Brothers map out
the journey of a survivor of love, loss and grieving...
for a city, a memory, a moment. 'You can't stop time, hard
as you might try... We're not here long, and then you're
gone... ' Journeys End is taken from the album All My Bad
Thoughts, released in the autumn 2005 on Vespertine & Son,
and includes three exclusive tracks as well as enhanced
slideshows of the title song and the unreleased instrumental
gem Operation Faff.

Singers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Sun,Ltd There are moments on MICROPHONES albums
that hint at this approach, but "SINGERS" takes
the idea all the way. Every song rides on a foundation
of singers singing, simple instruments, big swells. It's
spontaneous & very beautiful. No overdubs. Usually
it's just one microphone in the middle of the room, singers
becoming acquainted with the songs as they are sung, loud.
The songs were recorded over the past 5 years in Olympia & Anacortes,
WA during the in-between times at recording sessions & shows.
Whenever there were people with voices gathered PHIL (ELVRUM,
main song singer in "SINGERS", as well as MT.
EERIE, etc.) said "Hey I have this extra song! Let's
all record it right now without practicing too much!" Eventually
there were enough of these recordings for a whole record.

Neon Blonde
Chandeliers In The Savannah (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER
13TH)
PS, US Neon Blonde is the alter ego of the Blood Brothers.
Unlike the often frantic and frenzied songs of the duo's
other band, Neon Blonde is a much more eclectic, dancing,
and melodious venture that touches on the art-rock tunes
of Brian Eno and early David Bowie. The Seattle band's
Dim Mak debut is
a collision of elements - rickety old drum machines, chiming
guitars, pugilistic drum breaks, slinking pianos, and falsetto
wail. Neon Blonde brings a refreshing experimental edge
to their songs, which results in a charming pastiche of
styles and sounds. The lead single, "Headlines",
released earlier this year on Dim Mak as a 4-song CD EP
and 12-inch EP, is simply infectious. Other tracks hearken
to the cocaine-claustrophobic "Low"-era Bowie
with soaring synthesizer lines cascading over jagged guitar
lines, as well as the epic falsetto balladry of Freddie
Mercury with the effect-wizardry of early Roxy Music.

current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Expect

Beautiful Noise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Since the year 2000, Salim Nourallah's music has
received praise from publications such as Time Out New
York, Amplifier, Salon.com and Rollingstone.com. The public's
appreciation for his work was clear when he
played SXSW 2004 to a standing room only crowd, for his
debut of Polaroid. Salim's latest release, Beautiful Noise,
finds him reflecting on themes of mortality, aging, lost
love and, refreshingly, hope as an antidote to
despair. His keen pop sensibilities shine through on songs
like "Montreal," a McCartney-esque anthem to
the joys of coupledom and "The World Is Full of People..." a
ballad filled with fatherly worries and love. On Beautiful
Noise Salim connects with his listeners with emotional
and engaging songwriting, comparable to the Beatles, Wilco,
Big Star, or Beck.

years. He began his career as a singer with the cult band

Sleeping People
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, US Though aptly described as a "pleasant headache," Sleeping
People are more concerned with filling your headspace than
hurting it. They build up elaborate song structures, only
to deconstruct them through a series of complexities that
would most certainly run away from themselves without the
group's rigorous-yet-fluid control. Recorded on analog
tape by brother-producer tag team Jay and Ian Pellici (Deerhoof,
Rumah Sakit, Dilute), Sleeping People is rich with clarity
and depth. Tonally similar to early Yes albums, and bearing
more than a passing resemblance to classic King Crimson,
it is an album of stunning complexity that never abandons
the thoughtful melodicism that carries all great records.
Featuring past and present members of Pinback, Tarentel,
Rumah Sakit and Howard Hello, Sleeping People's pedigree
no doubt partly explains its fascination with trance-like
repetition and aggressive time signature changes. But nothing
about the group adequately explains why every one of their
songs makes you feel like you're being chased by the cops.

Slits
Live At The Gibus Club (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 30TH)
PS, US The Slits were not just a band. Their act shook
the pillars of popular music as we know it, uttering one
of the loudest cries of freedom and daring to challenge
the ever male-controlled music business, even in its most
liberal outcomes, like the underground pop scene is supposed
to be. Their chaotic mixture of free spirit, primordial
jazz-funk and punkish reggae made this group a unique experience
in the incredible magma of punk rock inventions. Live At
The Gibus Club, recorded in Paris in 1978, is a good example
of how astonished, puzzled and amazed every punk audience
must have been in those incredible years.

nearly all the group members. In diversifying, they've
found new focus in this full-on psychedelic soul masterpiece. "Love

scope, with more than half of its twelve tracks featuring
swooning string arrangements (courtesy of unofficial Furry

appearance from a 100-strong mixed voice Catalan choir.

1999, Unstable Ensemble's driftage has carried itself vast
miles toward border crossings and large/no audiences to
bestow ephemeral sound demonstrations as anti-placates
to jazzbo tokers and noise-junkies. Encapsulating many
forces, Embers surges with titanic electronic gale and
absolute stillness while inner lyrical intricacies summon
forlorn memories. A wholly distinct extension of the Musica

Spend an Evening with Saddle Creek (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE
AUGUST 23RD)
PS, US Film by Jason Kulbek & Rob Walters. The Saddle
Creek Records story told through interviews, home movies,
rare live performances and never-before-seen archival footage
with BRIGHT EYES, THE FAINT, CURSIVE and many others. In
1993, a group of childhood friends in Omaha, Nebraska released
100 copies of a cassette tape by a 13 year-old singer-songwriter
/ little brother, Conor Oberst. Two years later, the name
Saddle Creek Records was etched in vinyl and what began
as a collective local music scene would soon gain attention
as a center of independent music in America. The story
of the record label as told by the people who made it happen.
With extensive interviews, rare performances and archival
footage, the film is an oral and visual history of how
the combination of talent, dedication and collaboration
launched bands like Bright Eyes, Cursive, Azure Ray, Rilo
Kiley, Lullaby for the Working Class, Desaparacidos & The
Faint into the national eye & has fostered a close-knit
family of artists that continues to inspire each other
and their fans. "The most vital underground rock scene

community. In STYLE WARS, New York's ramshackle subway
system is their public playground, battleground, & spectacular
artistic canvas. As MC's, DJ's & B-boys rock the city
with new sounds & new moves, we see street corner breakdance
battles turn into performance art. 5.1 Dolby soundtrack

Vibracathedral Orchestra
Tuning To The Rooster (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 18TH)
PS, US Tuning To The Rooster is so far the first and only
record ever made by The Vibracathedral Orchestra using
a 24 track mixing board. Typically the group records on
2 tracks despite the fact that their eccentric and complexly
arranged sound practically requires 24 tracks. In what
the group calls a "foolish" decision, this 24
track recording seesion, recorded with Richard Formby (Spacemen
3 engineer), was split up and released on all sorts of
limited edition vinyl releases including splits with Low,
JOMF and a giveaway cd made for a Julian Cope curated festival.
In early 2005 the group went back into the studio and mixed
this album as it was originally intended, as one full album. "This
is music as a shamanic aid, made as much for the players
themselves as for the listeners. But as I'm writing from
the listening perspective, I have to inform y'all that
this is music to get you there. Every track sounds as though
it has always just 'been there', it's just you ain't quite
tuned into its peculiar frequency until now. The 12-and-a-half
minute Wearing Clothes of Ash is like a piano-led PARADIESWARTS
DUUL-period drone-a-thon with John Cale and Terry Riley
guesting on viola and keys. Following this, the sublime
Baptism Bar Blues is proof positive that they can rock
the riot house with pure adrenaline rush when the decision
is made. Indeed, this track is magnificent and should be
available to the masses free or in pill form." Julian
Cope.

Windsor For The Derby
Giving Up The Ghost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Windsor for the Derby are a study in dualities.
It is made of two primary band members preserving not only
a musical identity but a friendship over many years and
many miles. Creating music that is equal parts dance and
folk, a truly disparate combination of styles that come
out sounding completely organic. While listening to "Giving
Up The Ghost", you hear not only the beautiful stylistic
tension of two styles at play, but also the room and atmosphere
itself. Windsor's music has always been a play on modern
pop, infused with giant amounts of space, a space which
both reflects the physical distance between its members
as well as providing an artistic counterpoint to the massive
inundation of noise and data that our society is bombarded
with daily. The past eleven years have seen Windsor For
The Derby reach across the country and make the long distance
relationship somehow work. With founding members Jason
McNeely in Austin, TX and Dan Matz in various locales along
the east coast, WFTD always seemed more a "project" than
a band. Last summer both found themselves living in the
same city as they both relocated to Philadelphia. In the
past WFTD had to rely on their semi-annual meetings to
conduct their business, but now they are regularly playing
live shows and prolifically recording in their home studio.
