Amplifier Machine
Her Mouth Is An Outlaw
PS, US Amplifier Machine began in 2002 with James Dixon (Swordfish,
Supagroop, James Dixon) on guitar, Korg & piano, Seth Rees (The
Spheres, This Is Your Captain Speaking, I Want A Hovercraft, Seth
Rees) on drums, violin, samples, piano & guitar and Alex Jarvis
(Automatic, Black Cab, Registered Nurse, Alex Jarvis) on guitar &
drums, with the intention of combining their songwriting talents.
Something about getting three solo artists together, or maybe something
about what rehearsing for so long in a freezing Collingwood warehouse
does to the brain, caused the pop-bred members of Amplifier Machine
to spiral out into a peculiar music of inquisitive, atmospheric, half-improvised
mini-epics. Amplifier Machine is a self-described experiment inanemocratic
process and near-improvisation (anemocracy = rule by whim or the wind).
Through earnest discussion and endless unending jams, Amplifier Machine
came upon The Rule: that when the other two members have settled,
it's your turn to change. The Rule was found to be useful, not only
in musical terms, but also as a strategy in discussion, advocacy for
the devil, and reducto absurdums. Each members' musical approach is
informed by knowledge of various artistic processes, including: visual
art, drama, the written word, carpentry and car maintenance. Thus,
in music and in discussion, Amplifier Machine tends to start with
a thesis, then to spiral out into varying antitheses, to arrive at
some sort of synthesis. At least, that's the idea. Somewhat of a departure,
in terms of sound, for 12k, Her Mouth Is An Outlaw breezes darkly
languid chords over a post-rock-meets-experimental structure that
is decidedly lacking in micro-electronics. These echoes reach for
new 12k-heights while the spirit of ambience and space remain familiar.

Antony & The Johnsons
Another World
PS, US Antony and the Johnsons have emerged with a new album, The
Crying Light, which shall be released January 2009. "Another
World" is a five-song EP which shall precede said new album.
On "Another World", Antony lists the things he treasures
about the natural world, and then expresses how much he will miss
them. "Another World" is hypnotic and affecting, as well
as timely. The EP Another World also includes "Shake That Devil".
Part exorcism and part Shangri La, Antony calls out shape-shifting
perpetrators, and banishes them one by one. Two other songs, "Crackagen"
and "Sing For Me" are pastoral and surreal. Finally the
epic "Hope Mountain" closes the EP; an episodic narrative
set after a flood; people gather on a mountain to witness the emergence
of a holy girl.

PS, US A celebration of darkness & light, love & death, friends

PITCHFORK: "In the age of the mp3, you have to like a band that
respects your attention span and ability to sit through a 38-minute
album, giving you something that works as a whole beyond its considerable
highlights. Apollo Sunshine does that on their third LP, turning out
an eclectic and thoughtfully sequenced running order that runs the
gamut from pastoral folk to distorted-everything blues-punk to Latin-tinged
indie pop to orchestral interludes. It's indie rock that wants to
be and is a dozen things at once, and the band members have the songs
to make it work."

Avenaim, Robbie
Rythmic Movement Disorder
PS, AUSTRALIA Robbie Avenaim's RMD has been a long time in the making.
His debut solo release to surface in a career that stretches back
to the late 1980s, collects together the better part of a decade's
worth of experimentation with the possibilities of prepared percussion,
irregular rhythm, modulated pulse and low-tech electronics. Avenaim
is perhaps best known for his improvised collaborations alongside
the likes of Otomo Yoshihide, Oren Ambarchi (with whom he released
the transcendental 'Clockwork') and Keith Rowe. But his work explores
more than improvisation and the proof lies in this incredibly detailed
electro-acoustic outing. With its title referencing a particular syndrome
usually associated with the involuntarily movement of limbs, the pace
and form of Rhythmic Movement Disorder reflects this sense of frenetic
activity. As uncontrolled as the syndrome may be however, at no point
does Avenaim lose focus. Rather his effortless and articulate percussive
sensibilities flex to produce a dense and tirelessly refined compositional
approach that is brought to bare with stunningly rich and varied results.
PRESS: "Clockwork is magical improv." Tiny Mix Tapes (review
of Clockwork) "a piece of music that is circumscribed in scope
and sound palette, yet highly engaging throughout." Dusted (review
of Clockwork) "I did find myself increasingly captivated by its
tiny sonic dramas and the group's ability to make something out of
next to nothing." BBC (review of Thumb) "Its emphasis on
density rather than the in depth exploration of the most minute details
and yields truly engaging results on this disc." Foxy (review
of Sonic Systems Lab).

Beatnik Filmstars
The Purple Fez 72 Club Social
PS, UK After years of lo-fi pop madness, Beatnik Filmstars move effortlessly
away from their past, and into a new mellower ' Americana ' direction.
The humor in the lyrics Beatniks fans have come to know and love,
is still there, although there is a, perhaps, darker overall feel.
Country tinged twangy guitars, Hammond Organs, Accordions and Harmonicas,
replace some of the more experimental noise pop of the past, and songs
such as 'Hospital Ward' and 'Sweet Bird Of Sorrow' you could easily
imagine someone such as Will Oldham covering. And the slow building-
burner 'Nurse My Head' has an almost Spiritualized feel. There are
still one or two rockier numbers, but even these have a warmer laid-back
vibe going on. And although it is a big step away from their lo-fi
poppier past, it still sounds like no one but themselves. This could
be your album of the year. Laid-back, blissed out and gorgeous.

How Shadows Chase the Balance
PS, US This album is a further step away from the "folk"
label, which never seemed all that appropriate to Mathew's work in
any case. If you record solo w/ an acoustic guitar the description

alienation, fear, hatred & isolation that are his forte, as well
as his affinity for gothic imagery.

California Oranges
Imperial Hearts
PS, US Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a gem of
a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars
and a super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good
good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family.
Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's
California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're
known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately
concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The
quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features
the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday
Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking
Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking
Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced
by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray).
Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer,
Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges
construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire
licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently
up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters
want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely
sounded as sweet." --Treblezine. TRACK LIST: 1. Brand New Spine,

PS, US Car Commericals are generally uncomfortable; probably shifty-eyed

get very messy. Eric's Diary is the second LP release from Car Commericals,
following the out-of-print Judy's Dust LP (Cenotaph) from early 2008.

PS, SWEDEN "You never dream about tomorrows, you only you only

This is the anticipated second album from Celestial, the work of Swede
Andreas Hagman. The album is filled with beautiful pieces of dreamy
pop, jangly guitars, ace melodies and vocals from heaven. We believe
this release will be loved by those who appreciate the essence of
Creation and Sarah Records, Swedish pop, The Field Mice, Ride, Trembling
Blue Stars, My Favorite, Language of Flowers and Camera Obscura. The
wonderful vocals on the recordings belong to Malin Dahlberg (Douglas
Heart, Laurel Music, We Are Soldiers We Have Guns) and Ulrika Nymark
(Northern Fields). While first album "Dream On" draw resemblance
to C86, JAMC or a sun kissed Ride the new album shows a band changing

Co-Pilgrim
Pucker Up Buttercup
PS, AUSTRALIA Sparkling & beautiful down beat pop gem from British
troubadour Mike Gale. Co-Pilgrim was started in August of 2005 by
Mike Gale following the demise of his former band Black Nielson. 'Pucker
Up Buttercup was released on Low Transit Industries across Australia
in March of 2007. The album received glowing reviews and substantial
airplay. Gale had been toying with the idea of adding a female vocalist/guitarist
for a while so when he met Alysia Manceau at one of her former bands
shows in Melbourne he decided to ask if she'd be interested in joining
Co-Pilgrim. Alysia Manceau is a self taught musician who began playing
guitar at the age of five. After Studying film and television at RMIT
in Melbourne she realised that her true passion in life was music.
Writing and performing locally in Melbourne since 2000 as a solo artist,
Her formidable underground reputation as one of Melbournes most unique
singers and guitarists led to her becoming a founding member in Alternative
Country/Rock and Roll band Ned And The Meds. Luckily for Gale, Manceau
agreed to take up his offer of joining Co-Pilgrim formally and the
two have been working together since, indeed, such was the pairs belief
in their new found unison that Gale moved into Manceau's sharehouse
in order to live and breath together with the music they create, which
is a beautiful blend of folk and country, with emphasis on space and
harmonies. The newly strengthened Co-Pilgrim have been performing
frequently around Melbourne for the past six months as well as recording
a demo CD of future single and album material.

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Cosmo's Factory [40th Anniversary Bonus Tracks]
PS, US Throughout 1969 and into 1970, CCR toured incessantly and recorded
nearly as much. Appropriately, Cosmo's Factory's first single was
the working band's anthem "Travelin' Band," a funny, piledriving
rocker with a blaring horn section -- the first indication their sonic
palette was broadening. Two more singles appeared prior to the album's
release, backed by John Fogerty originals that rivaled the A-side
or paled just slightly. When it came time to assemble a full album,
Fogerty had only one original left, the claustrophobic, paranoid rocker
"Ramble Tamble." Unlike some extended instrumentals, this
was dramatic and had a direction -- a distinction made clear by the
meandering jam that brings CCR's version of "I Heard It Through
the Grapevine" to 11 minutes. Even if it wanders, their take
on the Marvin Gaye classic isn't unpleasant, and their faithful, exuberant
takes on the Sun classics "Ooby Dooby" and "My Baby
Left Me" are joyous tributes. Still, the heart of the album lays
in those six fantastic songs released on singles. "Up Around
the Bend" is a searing rocker, one of their best, balanced by
the menacing murkiness of "Run Through the Jungle." "Who'll
Stop the Rain"'s poignant melody and melancholy undertow has
a counterpart in Fogerty's dope song, "Lookin' out My Back Door,"
a charming, bright shuffle, filled with dancing animals and domestic
bliss - he had never been as sweet and silly as he is here. On "Long
as I Can See the Light," the record's final song, he again finds
solace in home, anchored by a soulful, laid-back groove. It hits a
comforting, elegiac note, the perfect way to draw Cosmo's Factory
-- an album made during stress and chaos, filled with raging rockers,
covers, and intense jams -- to a close. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine,

Davis, Greg & Sebastien Roux
Merveilles
PS, GERMANY Greg Davis and Sébastien Roux are back with their
second collaborative album following the acclaimed release "Paquet
surprise". "Merveilles", translated from the French
word as wonderland, describes the album very fitting as the songs
have a very illustrative quality. Where the previous album relied
a bit more on sweet melodies and quick changes "Merveilles"
explores different sound worlds in depth and illuminates a terrain
of diverse emotional scenarios. Silent passages of field recordings
are combined with subtle harmonic layers, interrupted by sudden noise
eruptions and contrasted by folk like guitar melodies and very concrete
sounds, often leaving the listener wondering what the origin of this
tone might be. It is a pleasure to have a documentary of this interesting
collaboration in which both musicians are able to realize their grown
individual expertise. Sébastien Roux, working at the IRCAM
and well known for his success in continuing the French line of music
concrete in a new and contemporary way, clearly helps to establish
the abstract narrative form of this record with arrangements of cut
and edited pieces of concrete recordings. The influence of Greg Davis,
often described as the anchor figure in the forming of the laptop
folk scene, is clearly audible in melodic guitar lines and the construction
of dense harmonic drones. But the strength of this collaboration is
the fact that Greg Davis and Sébastien Roux combine their musical
ideas creating a very unique approach of their own. This record clearly
combines elements of serious and popular music in a highly thoughtful
and contemporary way, widening the edges of by now established stylistic
fields that Davis and Roux once helped to define. "Merveilles"
consists of edits of live recordings made during a tour through Europe
and the US in 2005 - it is the pleasant proof that electronic music
of such richness in detail can be played and composed live.

Coveting
PS, US Misery wears many masks, but Tulare, California fatalist Jon
Borges has etched his mark on most of them. For at least half a decade,
he's pursued increasingly suicidal tendencies under his Pedestrian

of morbid beauty against savage canyons of harsh noise histrionics.
Lately, though, he's been straying more and more from this aggressive
exercise in contrasts in favor of his Emaciator alias, which draws
from the same dark wellspring of bitter memories and bipolar rage
but, instead of unleashing it in grand frenzies, bottles everything
up inside until it seeps out of the pores. Early efforts/cassettes
retained a strain of buzzing nausea reminiscent of his PD days, but
the last 12 months have witnessed a complete abandonment of any ties
to the past. Times are still bleak, sure, but the grey prisms of brooding
ambience Borges now conjures and slowly collapses convey a depth of
mood and subtlety far surpassing simple signifiers like indifference,
resentment, or remorse. Coveting collects together five exquisite
Emaciator compositions (including two particularly riveting songs
that were debuted live at Echo Curio) for a harrowing 40 minutes of
troubled solace, crisscrossing suicide guitar lines, and entranced
self-reflection. Meditation is a myth; desire does not sleep. Black
vinyl LPs in shrinkwrapped jackets with photography and layout by
Borges. Mastered by Pete Swanson, edition of 430

Fotheringay
Fotheringay 2
PS, UK This is what would have been -- and now IS -- the second release
for UK folk-rock legends Fotheringay, including all members Sandy
Denny, Pat Donaldson, Trevor Lucas, Gerry Conway, and Jerry Donahue.
These are the original recordings from 1970. Fotheringay remain one
of the great might-have-beens of British music. They lasted less than
a year, and released just one album, but their disappearance robbed
the early '70s scene of a group of musicians capable of taking folk-rock
to new heights of subtlety and musicianship. Now, the nine songs on
that debut album; assumed for almost four decades to be their sole
testament, are joined by the eleven that would have constituted a
follow-up. Sadly, they broke up during the recording sessions for
their second album. Incredibly, all the tapes survived in various
record company archives. Thirty-eight years later, the surviving members
of the group have mixed all the material to finally complete this
remarkable album. When originally released, the debut album went straight
into the Top Twenty in both Melody Maker and NME, and is now an acknowledged
classic recording of British folk-rock. It is very, very rare that
musicians get the chance to complete a project begun 38 years earlier.
The second Fotheringay album has been eagerly awaited by all fans
of Sandy Denny, British folk-rock, and by pretty much everyone in
general.

Fucked Up
The Chemistry Of Common Life
PS, US The second record from Toronto's hardcore wunderkinds is a
dense, orchestral effort containing an expansive epic about the mysteries
of birth, death, and the origins of life. Merging elements of hardcore
songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds, and vocals,
the songs are iconoclastic and startling, with Pink Eyes' growling
vocals front and center. Though Fucked Up remain punks at heart, if
quixotically diverse ones, they have created a great, weird, heavy
record that stubbornly sticks in your brain and your heart. HQ 180

Fucked Up
Get Young
PS, US Kings of punk and hardcore Fucked Up return with a mammoth
12" single, second in a series of records based on the Chinese
Zodiac. Year of the Pig is an 18 minute 34 second long prog-punk masterpiece
featuring lush piano and organ arrangements by Max Danger (The Deadly
Snakes) and guest vocals by Toronto's Jennifer Castle. Year of the
Pig starts with gentle guitar and soothing organ before heading into
darker territory with gruff male vocals offset by Castle's angelic
singing and a meandering bass line. It's not until a full 7 and a
half minutes in that the track explodes into a keith moon-esque drum
workout, which is followed by a one note neu trick that builds up
to a thrash attack. It's 'The Wall' as written and recorded by Poison
Idea.

Grouper & Inca Ore
Split
PS, SPAIN The sound Liz Harris projects on her records under the moniker
Grouper has been said to be deceptively simple, but truly emotional.
Layers of vocals processed again and again through loop delays and
chains of effects that create gorgeous whirlpools of chants, guitar
drones and tape noise, all full of something unique, pure and powerfully
beautiful. The kind of magic Harris manages to inject into her recordings
is something Eva Saelens knows about quite well, as Inca Ore she has
also sung and produced music with a touch of wilderness and witchery.
Liz and Eva compiled twenty minutes of unreleased material each on
both sides of a C40 recorded at home, a recording that Acuarela now
re-releases on CD with new cover art and remastered sound.

Grow Up
The Best Thing / Without Wings
PS, UK The Boutique Label presents the first ever reissues by cult
Manchester band Grow Up, active between 1978 and 1981 and a core group
on the highly collectible Object Music label. Grow Up were formed
in late 1978 by John Bisset-Smith, youthful guitarist with Spherical
Objects and an early member of the Manchester Musicians' Collective.
Best described as an experimental pop quintet, Grow Up debuted with
the six song EP Stay Awake in April 1979, and followed this with debut
album The Best Thing in 1980. Early champion Paul Morley (NME) wrote:
'Grow Up's LP is not only extremely commercial; it's a record of mellow,
sublime magic that extends the terse sound of the EP to a brilliant,
luxurious level. Their sound is a sort of ingenious, sax-propelled
chamber pop, of the Ayers/XTC English eccentric line, but it also
holds the melancholy depth and sauce of Brechtian cabaret, the twists
of Beefheart, the ambiguous tension of Lou Reed... Grow Up has invented
a whole new delirious pop world. They fracture tradition, push out
and bend into spaces but keep it light, snappy and appealing. The
Best Thing is not only Object's greatest release, but a record that
is up there with the obvious Mancunian biggies.' After a second single
Joanne (pitched as a 'quality pop song'), the band recorded second
album Without Wings in 1981. However, after Object ceased operations
the group was obliged to release the album on their own label, and
as a result of poor distribution the set was barely heard. Digitally
remastered, the 42 track double CD set features Grow Up's entire recorded
output, as well as two previously unreleased demo tracks. The booklet
features archive images and a detailed band biography.

hundred songs that you haven't heard. In fact, but for his best buddies
and the fine folks of Feedelity, very few people have heard more than
a peep from him. And yes, he's a him. If you read internet record
reviews, you may have seen his name around, though if you hate record
reviewers, please don't hold that against him. The truth is, he's
a songwriter, producer, singer, lover, fighterÖscratch that,
he's one of a growing number of college-educated musical auteurs with
more than a slight command of pop history and theory chops, and writing
songs for joyous, infatuated people. Perhaps some of them are a bit
over stimulated. Perhaps some of them just like good melodies and
strange chord progressions that still seem vaguely familiar. Dominique
is a "classically trained" musician from Texas who currently
operates out of San Francisco. He lists Brian Wilson, Claude Debussy,
Andy Partridge, Randy Newman, Glenn Gould, ABBA, Miles Davis, Olivier
Messiaen, and Magmaís Christian Vander as personal heroes.
He thinks Julie Mehretu is the bomb.

Les Tres Bien Ensemble
Rougeole
PS, SPAIN Many of us were left mesmerized by the precious melodies
and the elegant pop that "Doux-amer" had, LES TRÈS
BIEN ENSEMBLE's debut album from three years ago. After an intense
period and recent change in lineup with the incorporation of Charles
Gasqué, the second awaited album of the Catalonian band, "Rougeole",
has arrived. "The title, "Rougeole" ("measles"
in French) makes reference to something that only time can heal. Time
means life and death all at once, something out of human control that
inexplicably advances to a particular destiny. "Rougeole"
talks about the end of a vital stage, from disappointments to obsessions
and desires, from hope to desperation, from excitement to anguish,
reliance, nostalgia and indifference." There is no better way
to describe an album which finely depicts the most human and exciting
details to talk about the contradiction of existing, always with an
upbeat tone and vital hope, characteristics which describe each one
of the songs of "Rougeole". An album that Françoise
Hardy would adore and Jacques Brel would save a special place on his
CD rack for and Serge Gainsbourg would give to Jane Birkin, and THE
BYRDS would pack this album to help pass the time in the tour van.
The best part is that all of these influences, all classical, sober
and inspired, LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE formed their own plan,
within the same distance from the past as the present, but above all,
full of personality. There is a reason that time is the protagonist
of this fantastic second album, "Rougeole".

Mercury Rev
Snowflake Midnight (ON SALE)
PS, US Swirling atmospherics and mantra-like lyrics abound on Mercury
Rev's newest work Snowflake Midnight. Recorded almost exclusively
in the band's Catskills, N.Y. laboratory, Snowflake Midnight sees
MR continue experiments with laser harps, ad-hoc computer programs
and random note generators resulting in a record that moves with grace
between avant garde and traditional pop sensibilities. Standout tracks
"Butterfly's Wing" and "Senses on Fire" exhibit
the emphasis on letting the music define itself, as free as possible
from human interference. Zooming in at nearly any magnification, Snowflake
Midnight appears to be a resplendent fractal folding in upon itself,
into something continually new, unpredictable and spontaneous, and
yet so subtly self-aware, that it never fails to resemble itself as
a whole. FYI: The band will be gibving away a bonus instrumental album
entitled Strange Attractors on their website beginning 9/30. MOJO

Journey to the West
PS, US Blur mainman Damon Albarn with fellow Gorillaz brainstormer
Jamie Hewlett tackle a legendary Chinese legend and create a modern

created under the guise of a cartoon band, artist and designer Jamie
Hewlett and Blur's Damon Albarn followed Gorillaz with, no shit, Monkey.
The simian in question is the lead character in Journey to the West,
one of China's oldest and most endearing stories, a tale originally
written in the late 16th century that's considered one of the country's
four great novels. Oh and, with the help of director Checn Shi-Zeng,
Albarn and Hewlett adapted it into a modern opera. On paper these
ideas-- audacious, uncommercial, completely uncool-- should bomb.
But Albarn has always had a conceptual bent to his projects, and after
successfully acting as a conduit between African and Western music,
heading a supergroup that actually worked, and the shock success of
Gorillaz, it might be time to stop underestimating him."

New Radiant Storm Kings
Drinking In The Moonlight
PS, US Northampton, MA/New York city indie rockers New Radiant Storm
King deliver the tightest, hookiest and most diverse record in their
distinguished career. Recorded over six months in deep, rural Massachusetts,
Drinking in the Moonlight proves once again that guitarists/vocalists
Peyton Pinkerton and Matt Hunter along with bassist Caleb Wetmore
and drummer J.J. O'Connell write some of the most imaginative and
memorable American rock. Approaching their twentieth year as a band,
NRSK have gracefully matured as song smiths while retaining their
prowess at crafting unconventional yet infectious melodies. Drinking
in the Moonlight is a sonic mix of urban and rural, sporting distorted
yet wiry pop with a marked focus on narrative within their song writing
-- trademarks gratifying to longtime fans. Time spent in other bands
(Pinkerton in The Silver Jews and The Pernice Brothers; Hunter in
J. Mascis & The Fog and The Wharton Tiers Ensemble) has honed
the Pinkerton/Hunter attack musically and lyrically. Over the course
of thirteen songs, Drinking in the Moonlight addresses topics as varied
as random street violence, infidelity and subsequent pregnancy, exorbitant
winter heat bills and even an open condemnation of organized religion
(Thank God -Ed). Drinking in the Moonlight was recorded with longtime
NRSK engineer Mark Alan Miller (Cordelia's Dad, J. Mascis & The
Fog) at his Slaughterhouse Studios in Westhampton, MA. NRSK will tour
Fall 2008. TRACKS: 1) Soporific Slump - A few more pints and then

and have been lying up until just now. 3) Senseless - If a random
act of brutal violence changed your life for the better, how would
you explain it to anyone? To yourself, even? 4) Islander - She could
never handle the mainland for more than a few days at any given time.
5) Little Ice Age - Sometimes the idea of summer seems both impossible
and absurd. 6) Anything Can Happen - And usually does, if you're lucky
(or not). 7) New Paltz Waltz - Instrumental levity. 8) Eight Steps

Noriko, Tujiko/Lawrence English/John Chantler
U
PS, AUSTRALIA Tujiko Noriko joins with collaborators Lawrence English
and John Chantler for 'U', a record of orbiting themes, esoteric lyrical
wordplays and warm analog infused song-forms. Following on from the
acclaimed 'Blurred In My Mirror (ROOM40), 'U' is an LP of phases and
exchanges between Paris and Brisbane over a three year period. Like
its recording process, it unfolds with a time-lapse exposure - capturing
moments of absolute loss and unrelenting ecstasy. It's a record of
extended technique and unconventional method (both in terms of song
writing cycles and production), but most of all U is a swelling passage
through the rare and eccentric reality Tujiko Noriko evokes with her
curiously distant songs. U, a title chosen for its 'shape'(reflecting
the collaborative nature of the record), is by far one of Noriko's
most affecting records. It's also one of her most eclectic, littered
with songs that are telling of the world in which Tujiko Noriko finds
herself. PRESS (on Blurred In My Mirror): "This is not an album
that you skip to a middle of a song, every second on the album is
embraced by the previous. As such, it's hard to imagine that there'll
be a better batch of glitchy electronic pop released this year."
Stylus Magazine "the album manages a measure of magic when it
rests right at the nexus point of song and sculpture, pop and experiment."
Pitchfork "one of the most intriguingly inviting voices on the
planet." XLR8R

Oasis
Dig Out Your Soul
PS, US New album. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Colorful and dense where
Don't Believe the Truth was straightforward, Dig Out Your Soul finds
Oasis reconnecting to the churning psychedelic undercurrents in their
music, sounds that derive equally from mid-period Beatles and early
Verve. This is heavy, murky music, as dense, brutal, and loud as Oasis
has ever been, building upon the swagger of Don't Believe and containing
not a hint of the hazy drift of their late-'90s records: it's what
Be Here Now would have sounded like without the blizzard of cocaine
and electronica paranoia."

PS, US A darker slant than their previous full length, OvO's guitars
scrape & drums pound but the organic crunch & high fidelity
of this release will convince you that this is music taken further

finger of wigginess. Stefania Pendretti's vocals soar for the sky
& rest like a golden piece of corn in the steaming morass of dunt.

providing crunching headburn.

Papa November
Book One/Azmaveth
PS, UK About Papa November The name Papa November comes from a now
inactive short-wave radio numbers station that features the voice
of a girl repeating the words Papa November between blasts of discordant
noise, equally, blasts of short-wave noise, radio crackle and radio
drones permeate Papa November's music. Papa November, as a musical
project, was started by Stuart Tonge in 1997, who was inspired by
a desire to create his own language in sound. Stuart set to work,
enlisting the efforts of Katy Acquaye who wrote the lyrics, sang and
co-produced most Papa November releases between 2001 and 2006. Papa
November has released music on Static Caravan, Speedowax and Bearos
records. Papa November currently concerns itself with creating soundtracks
to imaginary dystopias. Papa November's album debut for First Fold
is inspired by the apocryphal Book of Azmaveth. The story is divided
into twelve parts over six chapters. In response Papa November created
twelve instrumental pieces to complement the structure of the book.
The music serves as a kind of dark soundtrack to the long forgotten
dystopian world that Azmaveth inhabits.

Preston, Joe & Daniel Menche
Cerberic Doxology
PS, US Dualdisc. Anthem Records is pleased to present Cerberic Doxology,
a single piece statement from Joe Preston and Daniel Menche, and an
epic tome carved from some form of primordial stone. As an album containing
a regular CD audio side in addition to a DVD audio/video side, this
release breathes life musically and visually on three different planes
of existence. Firstly, as a 25 minute audio recording, which is born
of a vocal chant evocation from both Joe and Daniel, of which layers
expand, contract, and weave within each other in an otherworldly,
mysterious dronescape, in a way that feels like a moment of mystical/mythical
creation akin to Gyorgy Ligeti's introduction to the monolith in the
film 2001 (or Ash Williams' mispronunciation of the Necronomicon and
its results, if you prefer). Secondly (on side 2 of this CD/DVD dualdisc),
as DVD audio, specifically mastered for this intent, which enables
the absolute full range of the recordings high and lows to be acutely
present, and thus expanding an already head shrinking experience.
And thirdly, as the DVD audio with a full-length video, culled from
footage of the mysterious landscape of the Pacific Northwest, exhibiting
its terrain, volcanic activity and atmospheric disturbances, from
obscure locations throughout the region, in addition of footage of
Sam Hill's Stonehenge memorial located in southeastern Washington
State. Combined with the unusually forceful subtleties of the audio
makes this an experience to behold a multitude of occasions, with
different effect, depending on one's mind-frame. Cerberic Doxology
is presented as a CD/DVD Dualdisc, packaged within a standard CD jewel
case, with a large front sticker stating each artist's name and affiliation,
along with a clear descriptor of the format's regular CD as well as
DVD capabilities.

PS, UK These were made for Cargo UK Collective stores only and are
limited to 500 copies. Already ripping it up with rave reviews and
radio on the other side of the Atlantic (New York Public Radio's JOHN
SCHAFFER's ALBUM OF THE YEAR), The Real Tuesday Weld's first conventional
album in the UK since their critical hit 'I Lucifer' (an Independent,
Times and Telegraph album of the week) is an extraordinary sonic collage
of electronic rhythms, spoken word, bluegrass, violins, woodwind,
and harmonized crooner vocals. A further flowering of the band's trademark
'Antique Beat' sound - the album's unique combination of old shellac
sounds vintage radio transmissions and glitchy electronics provide
a setting for lyrical concerns of life, love, dreams and death. Future
single "Last Words' is the signature song in the upcoming indie
classic: 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' starring 'Juno's' Michael
Serra' and three of the videos made to accompany the album have already

Rokes, The
Let's Live For Today: The Rokes In English 1966-68
PS, UK The Rokes were Brits who went to Italy in 1963 and became one
of the biggest bands in the land for the rest of the decade. They
chalked up numerous Italian language hits and recorded four albums
as well as becoming an enormous live draw and TV favorites. However,
scattered across those albums were a number of English language songs
that somehow came off sounding like a Euro-tinged blend of The Beatles,
Hollies, Kinks and Pretty Things. In 67, The Rokes released the first
English language version of Let s Live For Today, a song they d already
cut in Italian. It went on to become a huge US hit in the hands of
The Grass Roots and was covered by scores of bands. Rollicking beat
gems like No No No and Ride On slowly morphed into more sophisticated
fare such as the sitar-drenched Ripe Apples and the sinister psychedelic
rocker When The Wind Arises , both of which were released in the UK
in a belated attempt to break them here. Here, for the first time
on CD, are virtually all of The Rokes English language recordings
from 1966 to 1968. ** Re-mastered by Nick Robbins in the usual exemplary
style! ** In-depth liner notes by 60s beat fiend Stefan Granados and
features lots of rare photos and memorabilia! A must for all lovers

Specimens, The
Jazz Brutus
PS, Australia The most useful aspect of Terry Opie's Catholic Education
was the time his teacher brought a Black Sabbath record to class to
prove it wasn't satanic. Hmmm, he thought, I'm not so sure. He showed
it to three other specimens, who took it all in and eventually they
formed a mind-blowing band, specializing in nefariously loud sound.
Their debut was good, but it was with their second album (2004's The
Quick and The Deaf), that critics shat themselves. "Straining
amps to near combustion!" spat Kerrang. "Feels that it could
jump out of your speakers and whack you one!" shrieked Faster
Louder. Third album Jazz Brutus flexes even more sonic muscle. Saintly
pure punk, blazing riff rock with weird, ancient riffs exploding like
Blue Oyster Cult and a title track that is ferociously original psychedelia.
'I'm a Believer' sounds like Sebadoh after years performing at knifepoint,
emerging from some generic suburban outpost like a Phoenix. Some tips:
Do not listen to this album while operating heavy machinery. Do not
attempt to control a wrecking ball, do not get behind a speedboat
or handle electric kitchen utensils. 'Jazz Brutus' is what results
when a whole lot of speed and mayhem impact upon Melbourne like a
meteorite. "The Specimen's have written one of the more destructive
and unique garage records in the last five years, one that takes the
aggression of Detroit garage with the melody of Birdman.

Stravinsky, Igor
Octet To Orpheus The Neo-Classical Stravinsky
PS, UK Of all the major composers of the 20th century, none was more
warmly embraced by the world of rock music than Stravinsky. Along
with Edgard Varese, he was the principal influence on the compositions
of Frank Zappa, while numerous avant-garde and progressive rock bands
- among them Yes, who would take the stage to the accompaniment of
The Firebird - proclaimed him their guiding light. The obvious reasons
for this are his pioneering use of powerful and unusual rhythms, his
music's lack of sentimentality, its waspish wit, its anti-authoritarianism
- not to mention the composer's love of good whisky - all found obvious
counterparts in the rock lifestyle, even if his meticulous approach
to discipline did not. If history makes Stravinsky sound like a daunting
and intimidating musical figure - a composer to be approached with
fear and reverence rather than any expectation of pleasure - then
the gorgeous music contained here will prove a more than useful corrective.
The centerpiece of the compilation is the premier recording of Stravinsky¹s
beautiful and enigmatic score for the ballet Orpheus. The set also
includes Stravinsky's remarkable forays into film, Ode, and jazz,
the Ebony Concerto, performed by the Woody Herman Orchestra. All the
recordings are conducted by Igor Stravinsky. TRACKS: 1-10: Octet for

These Are Powers

PS, US Originally released in 2007, "Terrific Seasons" is
THESE ARE POWERS' first full-length album. "Terrific Seasons"
takes off with a punk-like ferocity, recalling the halcyon days of
Silver Apples and Throbbing Gristle. It is a poly-rhythmic, frantic,
unconventional work that finds THESE ARE POWERS utilizing border-line
conventional song structures to harness their abstract sounds. From
the urgency of opener "You Come With Nothing" to the anthemic
croon of "Little Sisters of Beijing," the distant and sinister
meditative sounds of "Drawing Water" and to the sprawling
jams of "Pizza Master Ice Cream Palace," the band covers
a tremendous amount of ground throughout their debut.

Taro Tarot
PS, US "Taro Tarot" is the finest document of THESE ARE
POWERS' prowess to date. Following the departure of original drummer
Ted McGrath, Chicagoan Bill Salas brings together the bands' musical
ideas concisely and cohesively in just over 20 minutes. It is no easy
feat, but on "Taro Tarot", These Are Powers demonstrate
to the world the power they wield. The low end undercurrent emanating
from Noecker's sub bass tones is like no sound you have ever heard
from the four stringed instrument, while the tribal and primitive
rhythm of "Chipping Ice" shows that while this band's music
is known to be a heavy sonic excursion, you can also fucking dance
to it. The frequency-analyzed sounds of "Cockles" are a
thing of beauty, while "Twin Remains" shares a melodic sensibility
with SST-era Sonic Youth. These Are Powers pack an eclectic infinity
into these six tracks, channeling far-flung musical ideas with their
undeniable intuitive sense into an epic, focused statement. Upon one

have arrived.

PS, US The Urges hail from Dublin, Ireland, but you wouldn't guess
it to listen to their debut album, Psych Ward. To judge from these
12 tracks, the Urges live in some enchanted land where paisley and
Nehru have never gone out of style, the sneer is the favored means
of human expression, and fuzzboxes and Farfisa organs are naturally
occurring phenomena. The Urges don't miss a trick on Psych Ward, capturing
the mid-'60s garage rock sound with uncanny accuracy, from the inspired
three-chord stomp of the tunes and the tough, fuzzy crunch of the
music to the swagger of Jim Walters' lead vocals and Circo Perrotti's
proudly analog production. There are moments where Psych Ward sounds
just like some lost session from the Standells or the Chocolate Watchband
until you read the credits and realize the Urges wrote and performed
these songs themselves, in the 21st century.

the crazed cave paintings of U.S. '60s garage, but now they're back
with a skull-clubbin', hair-pullin', loin-cloth full of spear-hurlin'
fury. As far as can be ascertained, none of these little beasts have
previously appeared on CD compilations, so sit back and be pummelled
into submission. Hopefully, you'll find some new pleasures within.
First came fire, then came the wheel, and then came garage. You'll
hear a child actor get very strange, a slab of evil fuzz from a bunch
of French Canadians, a Cleveland DJ going all psychedelic on record,
plus a whole lot more. It's primitive, but it's beautiful. Compiled
by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman
(The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Group Axis, Kevin Coughlin, Les
Hou-Lops, Dee Jay & The Runaways, Jack Eden, Bobby Simms &
The Simmers, The Sound Investment, The Bay Ridge, Blue Wood, Bobby
Comstock, Southbound Freeway, Dick "Wilde Childe" Kemp,
The In Crowd, The Reflektions, The Movers, The Outcasts, Bobby St.
Clair, The Outsiders, King Charles & The Counts, and Hex.

The Clock Machine Turns You On: Volume 2
PS, UK After kicking off with Killing Joke's seminal early single
Turn To Red, and Bloodsport pummeling the Sex Pistols' Bodies they
weave together the dubbed and dreamy [Youth & Simon Tong's new
Transmission project, Analogue Mindfield, SMARTYR - with the late
Paul Raven RIP, Norway's N.I.C. with former PiL guitarist Keith Levene,
Teledubgnosis from the USA, Sweden's Beatundercontrol], surreal-acoustic

taste of things to come with the Paterson soul chant of H.F.B.'s High
Five Brother [Malicious Monitor] and Vertical Smile - Youth's explosive
new disco-punk outfit. The set is a stunning affirmation of a label
which has stuck to its guns and released what it damn well wants,
flying the flag for the original independent spirit and relentlessly
throwing up stunning musical cross-pollinations shot through with
dub, guts and a healthy dose of humour and madness. This is one malicious

Teaism
PS, UK Teaism is a compilation featuring a diverse range of artists,
who each created a unique song based around the theme of music inspired
by the art and culture of tea. An idea conceived and curated by Stefan
Panczak (aka Inch-time), Teaism binds together 15 disparate tracks
by a hand-picked selection of artists. From the opening gambit of
Max de Wardener's Kettle Song, which chimes and charms, through to
Cibelle's sashaying Mr & Ms Grey, the pivotal theme evokes a sense
of reverie; a kaleidoscopic gamut of ideas brewed to concoct a heady
mix of electronica, jazz, musique concrete-style cut-ups, cinematic
tones and avant-garde composition. These all contribute towards what
is a glistening patchwork of sounds and atmospheres; each of them
different, yet with thematic and sonic undercurrents which unite them.
Contained within are stately melodies from the likes of Lord Jim,
spooky sound collages from Serafina Steer, the fresh-faced ambience
of Inch-time and the shadowy electronic sounds of the Break-ups. There's
also a digital folk-pop nugget from Tunng, nestling comfortably in
the middle of the tracklisting, which embodies their lust for samples
and found sounds, forged into absorbingly twisted shapes. This is
immediately contrasted with root70's freewheeling jazz, while the
likes of Carlos y Gaby and Oblong provide elegant and slow-building
melodies, with AM/PM and Qua throwing glitches, clicks and whirs into
the mix. Tying all of these strands together, Teaism takes the differing
outlooks and arrangements and coaxes them into a cohesive whole, where
a multitude of patterns and textures rub shoulders with each other
and never sound out of place. Tea is capable of doing so many things:
you can drink it to relax or inject much-needed impetus at the start
of the day; it can accompany deep thought or fervent chat. It's this
array of contradictions, or multiple purposes, which offers so many
appealing possibilities. Likewise, the myriad sounds collected on
Teaism represent their fair share of contrasts as well. At times warm
and delicate, followed by moments of brooding intensity, this electronica-led
compilation flits between different nuances, all the while remaining
deft and magical. Teaism is available as a limited edition CD and
features original artwork by Roy Ananda.

Yes or No
PS, US This collection of yelps & piquant guitar strums heralds
the arrival of New World freak folk on the continent. Modest but not
at all mousy, the breathy vocals in the left channel collide w/ warbled
squeals doubling down the right side. Modern spookiness w/ one man
sounding like Frank Black & Brian Wilson singing a duet, reminding
the listener that folk music is rooted in harmony & dissonance,
beauty & death.

Walker, Scott
Til The Band Comes In
PS, US In discussions of Scott Walker's body of work 1970's 'Til The
Band Comes In is unfairly left out or, even worse, derided as excruciatingly
saccharine. However, the first ten songs on this album, all Walker
originals, are on par with his finest work on classic albums Scott
3 and Scott 4. While the covers that close out the album (with the
notable exception of "It's Over") do feel like additions
that reek of label pressure, it shouldn't detract from the rest of
the record. Scott Walker's fifth solo album is a fine example of the
early work from one of pop music's most idiosyncratic geniuses, reissued
on CD for the first time domestically.

Walkmen
You & Me
PS, US The Walkmen took a working holiday from their usual sound on
their remake of Harry Nilsson's Pussy Cats and, to a lesser extent,
on the Dylan-goes-Latin vibe of A Hundred Miles Off, but they return
to more familiar territory on You & Me. Quite literally, too:
the band revisited the same studio where they laid down Bows + Arrows
for some of this album's sessions. However, travel is one of You &
Me's major themes, with beaches, holidays, and provinces placing these
songs all over the map. That plays perfectly into the Walkmen's uncanny
ability to conjure specific places in their music: "Donde Esta
La Playa," from its turista title to its deconstructed surf guitars
to lyrics like "there is still sand in my suitcase/there is still
salt in my teeth," plays like blurry but vivid memories -- and
proof that not everything that happens on vacation stays on vacation.
Grotto-like reverb gives "Postcards from Tiny Islands"'
riotous guitars a nostalgic twinge only heightened by small but telling
details like "the bar band and their sorry songs." The Walkmen
also travel through different sounds on You & Me: "Red Moon"'s
gentle acoustic guitars and brass give it a subtly Latin feel, while
"Canadian Girl"'s dreamy warmth suggests a vintage soul
single that's been tucked away for decades in a forgotten jukebox.
You & Me's return to the Walkmen's usual shadowy, introspective
moodiness feels like a cloud covering the sun, especially after the
drunken wake of Pussy Cats. Fortunately, that cloudiness suits these
songs, particularly "On the Water," a darkly pretty ballad
lit by faintly shimmering keyboards, and "In the New Year,"
which sets a bruised melody to jubilant organ swells that only sound
more poignant together. Despite a few louder moments like "Seven
Years of Holidays (For Stretch)"'s shambling waltz and "Blue
Route"'s gut-punching drums, You & Me delves deeply into
the evocative ballads that have made the band fascinating since Everyone
Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone. The album closes with a trio of
them, with the spare jangle of "New Country" and "If
Only It Were"'s final declaration "I'll die in dreams of
you" ending You & Me on a somberly sweet note. This may or
may not be the Walkmen's prettiest album, but it's certainly their
loneliest. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

West, Keith
Excerpts From: Groups & Sessions 1965-1974
PS, UK Keith West is best remembered as the voice behind the legendary
Grocer Jack single and 'Excerpt From A Teenage Opera' became a champion
of both the pop charts and the '60s psychedelic lifestyle. Away from
the pin-up-mags Keith also made a serious impression on the underground
scene with Tomorrow and enjoyed a wonderful and varied career. This
compilation charts his progress through the 1960s and into the '70s
with a remarkable collection of rare and previously un-issued tracks.
Ranging from Four+One, the In Crowd -- with guitarist Steve Howe (who,
when they became Tomorrow, wrote two songs for the cult '60s thriller
Blow Up, which appear here for the very first time) -- to both 'Teenage
Opera' singles. Lavishly illustrated with a full pull-out poster-booklet,
this gorgeous CD receives a keenly awaited re-press.

Welcome to Goon Island
PS, US 2008 debut album from the intriguing and mysterious British
Electronic act. Somewhat of a metaphor for Britain, Welcome To Goon
Island is born from the great British Art School tradition; vivid,
interesting, expansive and far-reaching, an aesthetic that seeps into
everything they do from their other-worldly videos via intriguing
photos to extra curricular activities such as training dogs to dance.
Yet such apparent frippery shouldn't disguise their uncanny ability
to pen rather fine songs, as Welcome To Goon Island attests. The album
was produced by with Ross Orton (Fat Truckers, MIA, Bromheads Jacket,
Kid Acne) in Sheffield at the end of 2007. A joyous and innovative
record which rumbles, rolls and swings. 11 tracks.

Seven Songs + Singles (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, UK Expanded reissue on CD by seminal post-punk group 23 Skidoo.

conceived of funk as a sinister energy, and Seven Songs still sounds
bloodcurdlingly intense" (Simon Reynolds, Rip It Up & Start
Again, 2005). Digitally remastered, this extended CD includes seven
bonus tracks from the singles Last Words and Tearing Up The Plans.

A Cuckoo
Destination Unknown (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US "There is something reassuringly old fashioned about A
Cuckoo, a singular individual who dwells on the Yorkshire Moors and
has a fixation with sepia-toned Edwardiana, music boxes and the like...
MOJO would like to add that we hope that A Cuckoo's forthcoming album
will be available on 78. It would seem impolite if it wasn't."
- MOJO By the age of 17 A Cuckoo had already played in respected UK
bands Blue Aeroplanes and House of Love. In his early 20s he started
to create and produce his own music. In the meantime he ended up working
nearly full time as a composer for the BBC, which is where he "learnt
how to orchestrate and paint sonic pictures." Quietly A Cuckoo
began putting some of the rough ideas that he was developing up on
MySpace. The page quickly began to gather a list of complimentary
comments and was visited by A Girl called Eddy (former Le Grand Magistery
recording artist, currently signed to Anti), who asked what the situation
was with the release of his material. "Um, they're only rough
snippets!" replied A Cuckoo, so A Girl Called Eddy put him in
touch with Matthew Jacobson from Le Grand Magistery who insisted he
finish the album so he could release it. The result is 'Destination
Unknown'. A magical and dusty esoteric mix of styles that seems to
effortlessly project a work of humble yet visionary compositions and
poetry. Filled with music boxes, accordions, mandolins, bells, a quartet,
acoustic guitars, and endless melody. "Great songs" - Chris

III (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The band's first studio album but, as
the name implies, its third overall, III finds the members of the
Alps in good creative health -- perhaps not surprising for a slew
of performers who regularly make their name with other projects like
Tarentel and ARP, but the trick for any such project lies in its members
knowing how to meet in the middle. On this level III is a good success,
clearly balancing out solo and improvisational elements with gentle
structure on a series of (mostly) instrumentals, equal parts feedback
drone/zone and slow, steady melodies and rhythms. It's very much an
album placing itself in a larger tradition -- Pink Floyd at their
most creative, especially with soundtrack work (not for nothing would
one song here be called "Echoes"), and similarly Popul Vuh,
and those are simply two of the most obvious references."

The Great Orthochromatic Wheel (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US The Great Orthochromatic Wheel is The Blithe Sons first full-length
release since 2004. In the years since the California duo of Loren
Chasse and Glenn Donaldson may have traversed poppy fields and swam
to aqua cities though mostly they've remained active with their Jewelled
Antler offshoots: Ov, Of, and Child Readers (Chasse ) or Skygreen
Leopards and Flying Canon (Donaldson) and both in Thuja. These five
songs combine nature's melodic pull and minimalist songs forms summoned
by a miniature orchestra of eclectic instruments. Each LP side flaunts
a different depth of the Sons, one recorded outdoors and the other
inside. The indoor set consists of slow-motion ballads built on hymn-like
organ, nylon string guitar, analog drum machine & stark percussion.
The outdoor side offers a web of exotic wind-instruments & battery-powered
electronics reverberating in a cavernous hall cut in the side of a
sea-cliff. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for a free MP3
version of the album.
The Blithe Sons have released five other full-length albums since
2001 for Family Vineyard, Chocolate Monk and Jewelled Antler. In 2007

Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US An unpredictable and dramatic "big band song cycle about
science and information", Everything/Everything is a new departure
for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB. Additionally,
whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed by the sounds
of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does away with them
entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an ensemble dominated
by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ, it features luminaries
from both the jazz and experimental classical music scenes. Whilst
this is almost certainly his most pop oriented release to date, Everything/Everything,
as it's name suggests, nds room for moments of racing Philip Glass
minimalism, lop-sided disco, expressionist cabaret, and even an eery
ambient interlude. Lyrically, the album's concept is "the - good
of information" in our modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology,
language and art, sometimes surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes
provocative, a weird blur of fact and action, delivered in Bookish's
distinctive English eccentric vocal. It's only natural that Simon
Bookish would want to tackle this chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish'
is the pseudonym of London-based composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse
recent work has included everything from sound-art installations in
Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and guest spots with Leafcutter John
and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and computer music for contemporary
dance at the Royal Opera House to an acclaimed appearance with the
National Theatre as "The Singer" in Brecht's "Caucasian

Connors, Loren
The Moon Last Night (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US The Moon Last Night perfectly captures the complex and contemporary
guitar style of Loren Connors - totally desolate yet wound in echoy,
rich black clouds that weep of Mississippi ghost blues and chiming
strings. This two-part suite combines the artist's love of choral
music, Giacinto Scelsi and the naked Venusian guitar style he evangelized
across a string of private press LPs in the late 1980s. Conjured solely
from a Fender six-string and reverb effects, solitary notes swirl
and loft gently from distant points before collecting into booming
clusters. Recorded in Connors' Brooklyn apartment during the winter
of 2008, the rustles of clothes and a creaking chair appear throughout.
Like a kaleidoscope or the cover art itself - a 1973 painting by Connors
- subterranean layers of composition and melodic streams are uncovered
in each listen. Pressed in an edition of 500 one-sided translucent
yellow LPs Connors has released over 50 albums since his 1978 debut,
and since 1999 he has recorded over two dozen solo and collaborative
albums with Suzanne Langille, John Fahey, David Grubbs, Christina

Darling Downs
From One to Another (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, US "A record of spare, tender songcraft, whose delicate shifts
in tone make the simple alt.country tag inadequate. A brave move for
both, brilliantly pulled off. 4 stars."-Uncut. The DDs stand
out as the most unlikely of collaborations between longtime members
of the fertile Australian rock scene. While it is not at alll insane
to imagine the driving force behind SCIENTISTS, BEASTS OF BOURBON
& SURREALISTS, KIM SALMON, working with DIED PRETTY's energetic
frontman and songwriter RON PENO, the improbable happens when you
consider the result that might flow from such a teaming. What are
the odds that these two towering figures of Australian music, famous
for swaggering, noisy, swampy punk rock (Salmon) & soaring pop
rock (Peno) would concoct such a perfect loveletter to American country
folk? Armed only with Kim Salmon's custom Cole Clark acoustic guitar
and Peno's singular voice & vision, The Darling Downs crafted
an almost impossible album: a record of nuanced beauty, a subtle masterpiece
that unfolds like a dahlia with each successive spin, giving the listener
something new & unexpected at every helping. All from two guys
& one pristine guitar. At times Peno channels the spirit of Appalachian
folk's high lonesome sound, complete with yips, yelps & howls,
while elsewhere his (improvised?!) vocals are hypnotically understated,
almost delicate--threatening to disappear into thin air before crashing
down like thunder. Supporting Peno's acrobatic vocal brilliance is
Salmon's equally understated, elegant guitar playing, perhaps the
most restrained of his career, made all the more stunning when you
know the fireworks & growl of which he is capable & for which
he is famous. Salmon showcases not only his versatility but playing
of such surprisingly refined grace that it defines the album as one
of the best listens of 2006. An album of profound subtlety. "With
Salmon often infusing the guitar lines with deft lilts & melodies,
grasping each song is sometimes as difficult as interpreting a
smoke signal in a storm, the ever-shifting qualities of the music
making it difficult to categorize. The experience mesmerizes."-The
Age (AU).

Howling Songs (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, FRANCE Double clear LP, gatefold with 2 drawings as inlays, limited
edition 500 copies. Howling songs is a magnificent third and last
part to the "drinking/ failing/ howling songs" trilogy.
We are back to this Slavonic tune, without any definite frontier,
whose only and constant heritage finds its roots in European music.
It is all the more sensitive that Matt's voice is sometimes present
without any chorus in the background, bringing to the whole both confidence
and unquestionable heat. Howling songs is, without a doubt, the most
introspective album by Matt Elliott and the one which carries best
his musical personality.

French Impressionists, The
Amelia Rosselli (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a brand new CD album by The French
Impressionists, the modernist ensemble associated with Postcard Records
and Les Disques du Crepuscule. The French Impressionists first emerged
in 1981 via the Postcard Records School, when founder/pianist Malcolm
Fisher made his first recordings with members of Aztec Camera and
The Jazzateers. A more permanent line-up released A Selection of Songs
on Les Disques du Crepuscule, as well as Christmas single Santa Baby,
and found lasting success in Japan. In 2007 the group, now based in
Milan ( Italy ), released a well-received new album, Fête. For
the third French Impressionists album, Malcolm Fisher has joined forces
with gifted Italian singer Sara Cicenia, setting the poems of Amelia
Rosselli to original piano music. Born in Paris in 1930, Amelia Rosselli
was the daughter of anti-fascist resister Carlo Rosselli, assassinated
by Mussolini's agents. She spent her life studying ethnomusicology
and taking part in the cultural life of postwar Italy as a literary
translator and poet, the latter work marked by bold verbal combinations
and deliberate linguistic error. She committed suicide in Rome in
February 1996. The deluxe booklet features a selection of original
images by Malcolm Fisher, and the text of several of the poems. The
duo will tour the Rosselli material in Italy later this year.

live. The intimate, mostly-acoustic set documented here was recorded
in July 2008 in Glasgow and mixed by Mice Parade's Adam Pierce. Among
other surprises, special guests pop up here and there: James Graham
from The Twilight Sad contributes vocals to an incredible version
of "Keep Yourself Warm," while Glasgow scene staple Ross
Cook adds rollicking mandolin to "Old Old Fashioned." The
stripped-down instrumentation brings singer Scott Hutchison's vocal
delivery - now wrenching, now soaring - to the fore, showcasing the
emotive lyrics and memorable melodies that have earned the band their
passionate following.

Giffoni, Carlos
Adult Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21st)
PS, US This is shining and pure electronic music. Adult Life continues
Carlos Giffoni's work in slow-building drones and prickly, trebly
peaks, but he also imbues these new compositions with subtle structure
and blind-siding rhythmic pulses which recall the many pioneers of
electronic composition, among them Cluster, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk,
and Tangerine Dream. The caustic melding of foreboding abstraction
and lively pulse raises Adult Life to a paradigm of the breathing
and the immaculate, a strange set of dichotomies finding a shocking
common ground. Carlos Giffoni describes this as some of his most musical
work to date, a pure electronic excursion into more grounded troupes
which almost paradoxically work out completely new sonic concepts
and ideas. Original Illustrations for this full length by Megan Ellis.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously
created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album
on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution
towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards
a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit
sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences
for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over
and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone,
SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in
their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on
to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo,
Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for
remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian
Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal).
And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis
has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date
on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES:
"One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone
"Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse"
- Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples"
- SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream"
--- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet
another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like
your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment
Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock,
and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

Silence Is Wild (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Having come out of a year of isolation, Frida Hyvönen
paired up once again with Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen in Stockholm's
famous Atlantis studio and made her second full-length Silence Is
Wild. Whereas Hyvönen's 2006 debut Until Death Comes was lean
and percussive with her distinctive oompah-styled piano and direct
lyrics, Silence Is Wild stretches her voice across lush arrangements
of piano, strings, choirs, and synths. Piano-based antecedents and
contemporaries such as Carole King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Plush, and Antony
and the Johnsons generally feel like appropriate touchstones for discussing
the Swedish singer-songwriter's recorded work. Lyrically, however,
Hyvönen is in more open waters, as she forges her own stylistic
path as a songwriter. On Silence is Wild, Hyvönen continues to
take an utterly modern approach to classic songwriting forms: blending
the confessional with the fictional; mixing wit with a sexuality that
shifts from the refined to the raw; all the while using language which
dances effortlessly between the timeless and the contemporary, referencing
high art and pop culture in a transcendent manner which masterfully
puts Hyvönen at the top of a new international class of singer-songwriters.

I Am Robot And Proud
Uphill City (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, US I Am Robot And Proud is the name Toronto native Shaw-han Liem
works under to create his singular brand of hypnotic, beguiling electronic
pop music. Uphill City is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up
to his very popular 2006 album The Electricity in Your House Wants
to Sing. Like the previous record, Uphill City is electronic pop music
that energizes the listener and refreshes the ear yet Shaw-han's skill
as clever pop composer has grown even more mesmerizing. Shawn-han
says the theme of the new record is that of struggle and achievement
in the big city. IARAP is syncopated multi-instrumental rhythms and
playful, repetitive multi-dimensional melodies -- just the elixir
your head needs. Shaw-Han mixes acoustic instrumentation; piano, guitar
and drums seamlessly with his unique electronic keyboard sounds and
percussive elements. This isn't difficult, experimental IDM that pulls
the listener off the left side of the dial. This is complex composition
that manages to simply delight. It's an exciting sound that gives
one the feeling of flying fast & free through a heavenly modern
green world of pop, beauty, and sunshine. Your brain chemicals are
sure to be balanced after the first minute into the title track. "Since
the 2006 album, i have done some traveling and playing shows around
the world and visiting many cities. Its interesting for me to see
how everyone is living in different ways but there are still similarities.
In English, the word "Uphill" has a kind of a double meaning.
It can be positive like "things are looking up", or it can
mean something is very difficult like "uphill battle". I
thought the city was like a symbol for the challenges that happen
in your life." --Shaw-han Liem

International Jetsetters
Heart Is Black EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US "Honey-dipped 60's melodies drenched in oceanic swells
of guitar noise..." - Oxford Bands, UK International Jetsetters
is an Oxford based five piece. The band was formed in March 2007 by
singer and guitarist Mark Crozer (The Jesus And Mary Chain) and bass
player Bert Audubert. The line-up also features drummer Loz Colbert
(The Jesus And Mary Chain, Ride), lead guitarist Paul Crozer, and
vocalist Fi McFall. The Jetsetters have been best described by the
British press (Nightshift Magazine) as "an amalgamation of everything
that was great about indie rock, when that term actually meant something.
From the narcotic fuzz of Spacemen 3 to the insistent jangle and drone
of The Wedding Present, and lifted spaceward by singer Fi McFall's
ethereal vocals, they're dark and dreamy but they rock like bastards."
"Heart Is Black" is International Jetsetters debut six-song
release. The EP blasts into the stratosphere with the full throttle,
melodic guitar buzz, of "Inside Out" followed swiftly by
the rhythm heavy groove of "Inside Yourself". "Never
Slows Down" and "My Redemption" showcase Fi McFall's
range as a singer. The low, breathy tones of the opening verses gradually
ascend to pulsating choruses where she resonates like a siren. The
title track "Heart is Black" strums and thumps with a dark
atmospheric burn. The disc closes with a bit of a twist - A glaring
early version of "Never Slows Down". International Jetsetters
"Heart Is Black" CDEP hits quick and begs for repeated listens.
It's a nice glimpse into what's in store from Oxford, UK's latest
export.

PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Kemialliset Ystavat/Sunroof
Split Series #19 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Kemialliset Ystävät (it translates as 'chemical friends')
are a loose collective from Tampere in southern Finland. Existing
in dialogue amongst (and beyond) the hugely creative, diverse microcosm
of the Finnish scene including artists like Avarus, Lau Nau, Es, Paavoharju,
Islaja, Anaksimandros, and labels like Fonal, 247 Laatijaa, and Lal
Lal Lal, Kemialliset Ystävät has become an influential node
on the outsider noise/folk/ psych underground, finding international
acclaim. Almost entirely self-taught and using a bewildering array
of instruments and approaches, their sonic arsenal includes detuned
guitars, bass, traditional / vernacular instrumentation (mandolins,
balalaikas, etc.) hand percussion, all manner of electronic instruments,
effects, toys and circuit-bent items, treated samples and vinyl manipulation.
Playfully taking their own unique and unpredictable path, they have
layered and fused together traditional Finnish (at times almost medieval-sounding)
instrumentation and melodies with avant-garde electronics, psychedelic
folk/rock, noise, electro-acoustic, and percussive tribal rhythms,
creating a sense of ritualistic magic and flexible, group-mind improvisation,
with the whole often subjected to brutal and precise editing.

Kossoff With Black Cat Bones, Paul
Paul's Blues (DELAYED: PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, UK This double CD contains the earliest known recordings of the
UK's Paul Kossoff (Free), whose tragic death at 25 in 1976 robbed
the rock world of one of its finest-ever blues guitarists. Taped at
rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw, lo-fi
tracks find the teenaged Kossoff already a master of his instrument.
Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brookes (later
to form the legendary Leaf Hound), and featuring a guest appearance
from Paul Rodgers (later to form Free with Kossoff), the recordings
are of considerable historical importance. They are released here
for the very first time, along with a booklet featuring rare photographs,
full liner notes and an introduction from the band's drummer, Frank
Perry, making the album an essential purchase for all serious rock
fans.

Lake
Oh, The Places We'll Go (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US "Oh, the places we'll go! Oh, we don't actually know!"
The title track lyrics, with a nod to Dr. Seuss, have a wide-eyed,
wondrous feeling, (and a hint of agnosticism) which finds itself popping
up throughout the record. On their first K release, LAKE crafts up-beat,
dance-able, psychedelic, uniquely sincere and unaffected pop songs,
ranging from the jubilant, echoey, post-soul groove of Heaven to the
sweet, polyrhythmic Green Arrows-inspired Bad Dream. Recorded at home,
largely on cassette 8-track, this album, actually LAKE's third, has
a slightly lo-fi, homemade feel as well showing evidence of their
influence from prolific artists Karl Blau and R. Stevie Moore. Oh,
the Places We'll Go represents a new direction for LAKE - more synthesizers,
more up-beat, rhythmically-based songwriting - but it is also in keeping
with their aesthetic, with contributing horn players and percussionists,
male and female singers, group harmonies, sweet melodies and homespun
production. LAKE's core membership is Ashley Eriksson, Eli Moore,
Lindsay Schief, Andrew Dorsett, and Markly Morrison, a group of long-time
friends based in Olympia, WA. The members of the band came from Washington,
the Los Angeles area, and the Midwest but soon found themselves drawn
together in the inspiring forests of the Pacific Northwest, and thus
LAKE was born. Each is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in their
own right, and contributing melodies and complementing one another's
strong points has become the process for LAKE's intimately nurtured
songwriting.

Legends, The
Seconds Away (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4th)
PS, US After two years of absence The Legends return with the noisiest
pop single to ever come out of Sweden. "Seconds away" balances
perfectly between the unbearable and pure loveliness. "I need
noise now, so this new single sounds like someone drilling a whole
in your head. In a pleasant way that is. It's called "Seconds
away" and is about the wonders of Tryptizol. The B-side, "Over
and over" is actually one of those sad love songs I had promised
myself never to write again. But it was out of my hands; life forced
me to write it. Sorry about that... Pallers has done a truly wonderful
remix of it. It might actually beat the original, which is both a
very good thing and slightly depressing at the same time." Johan
[aka The Legends]. The one-man band The Legends has confused, and
annoyed, it's surroundings with a total lack of will to compromise
and sudden changes in musical direction since 2003. Right now Johan
is in the famous Summersound studios together with a large number
of distortion pedals and broken amplifiers to record a fourth The
Legends album. The Legends made their debut with the critically acclaimed
album "Up against the Legends" in the fall of 2003. Live
the band was somewhere between 8-10 people of which two had a slight
idea about how to play their instrument and none was close to sober.
-" I wanted to make pop melodies so simple and obvious that they
could get to the audience no matter how the songs were played. This
time the audience will, hopefully, rather fight to hear the melodies
through a wall of feedback".

for their full length album to come out. Just as their name suggest,

a definite Swedish take, and also a female singer. Listen to "Airport"

Logos For Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US For a split second the actuality of language stood only to
bear witness and inspire the sonic structures of love being erected
around me, and in this moment I believed in principle of purpose.
Only when English was interjected did I sense the imposing future
and separate out the soundscape of this melodic passing clan from
the music streaming through the speakers. Logos for Love presenting
a variety of acoustic instrumentation pressed into each other with
modern blips and squiggles like a structure of so much brightly colored
modeling clay with an illuminated jeweled interior, embracing the
ancient rhythms and language over the impeding future. Malcolm Felder
creates streamlined, discretely layered electronic music informed
by a taste for left-field pop ranging from Bruce Haack to Bollywood,
Hüsker Dü to George Jones. After moving to Queens in 1998,
he began composing as Lineland, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional
realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A.
Abbott. Initial fourtrack Casio recordings grew into the album Pavilion
(Audio Dregs 2003) over a three-year period, during which Felder expanded
the material using music software on the home-built Dynavox 2000 computer
and a growing array of vintage keyboards and novelty instruments.
Songs have appeared on a few compilations and in several short independent
films, including Back and Forthby James and Jeff Israel.

raw energy and music which captured our hearts, but this time magnifies
it through the complex emotions & experiences the band has struggled

in finding the relief of the morning's light at the end of a bad nights

Lowfish
Frozen & Broken (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14th)
PS, CANADA Lowfish, a.k.a. Toronto's Gregory De Rocher, ranks among
the worlds leading electronica producers. He has released records
on some of independent dance music's most influential labels, has
charted in North America and is noted for his punishing sets of live
electronics. His clinical production style is both very modern and
built on the DNA of early new wave and IDM. Sometimes dark, often
melodic and multi-layered, Lowfish tracks strive for meaning, timelessness
and quality. The weapons of choice are what they have been from the
start; semi-operational analog synths, temperamental drum machines
and scratchy recording gear. The name Lowfish is a reference to these
dusty machines and his early lo-fi "ish" sound - thus Lowfish.
With six albums and a stack of singles behind him, 2008 has seen Lowfish
aggressively pushing his sound forward. He's been hard at work distilling
his pristine electro and throbbing analog buzz into a new techno variant.
The playfulness of yesteryear is somewhere deep in the background
with the fine detail of machinery and staccato bass lines taking the
fore. The result is "Frozen and Broken". Ten brand new tracks
of edgy analog electronica reminiscent of Lowfish's famed Suction
Records era IDM and an aberrant dance floor sound built from his most
deviant sound palette to date.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail.
A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic
e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This
all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired
by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space
and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia.
Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a
matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do
something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical,
or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment"
to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the
titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken
kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken
7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their
own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was
done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started
by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate
work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance
collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as
Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek
in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work
for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches)
and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations
by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many
more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel,
Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron
Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is
a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include
Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub
Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher
(A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations,
photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum
52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group
exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial
of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous
musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew
Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Confluence (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, US Confluence is Danish producer Jonas Munk's third installment
in his series of ambient albums, following the much loved The North
Shore from 2003 and Bajamar from 2006. Unlike Munk's better known
work, which centers around electronica and shoegazing aesthetics as
well as a love of 1980s production techniques, these ambient works
are completely without beats, or even time signatures, and are delicately
constructed out of slowly evolving streams of guitar that has been
processed into oblivion and back. But even compared to the standard
set by the two aforementioned albums, Confluence is surprisingly dark
and minimalist. These eight new compositions move slowly and seamlessly,
like the ebb and flow of the changing tide, with subtle layering and
filtering providing the essential means of movement.

Melodium
Cerebro Spin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Melodium speaks; there starts a romantically slow game of pong
between the hemispheres of brain. The sound speeds. I listen, and
there is harmony now between the players, and reluctance towards competition.
They play on. Melodically Melodium speaks. Faster, onward towards
the polyrhythmic rally! All praise repetitive motion, be stilling
thus Zen. The tones of play fashion an energetic path, a melodic relation
of right and left. Only when Melodium pauses for a breath do I remember
moments can be filled with splitting silence; that I am here and this
is somewhere other then the pong game of my mind. Keep speaking. Melodium
is the moniker of Laurent Girard, a rather prolific electronic musician
from Nantes, France with an obsession for melodies. Weaving bits of
guitar, piano, synthesizer, flute or bits of voice and texture to
create patterns in sound and small personal soundtracks that are at
once somber, while retaining a feeling of sunny optimism. Golden waves
of sound with rough-hewn edges that sound both dreamy and melancholic
and simultaneously warm and shiny.

Midori Hirano
Klo:yuri (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH )
PS, JAPAN The intricate fusion of the piano, strings, and electronics
created a structural beauty reminiscent of chamber music in her first
album "LushRush." The album founded upon her musical sophistication
foretold a new generation of music and was best illustrated by listeners
as "post classical." Almost two years since then, Noble
is happy to once again release an album by Midori Hirano in her 2nd
album, "Klo;yuri". Midori's murmuring vocal heard only in
a few of the songs in her previous album are back again in almost
half of the tracks with a slightly stronger voice in comparison to
the last. The artist worked alone on almost everything from the composition
to remix in her previous album. This time, Hiromits Shoji of Soundworm
has taken on the mix and mastering to bring tenfold the depth and
strength to the album with his unique musical structuring. The tingling
excitement of improvisation and the spiritual melody like sacred music...the
fragile but thoughtful voice and suggestive lyrics like an ancient
European... Midori Hirano's new album is a woven fabric of originality
that proves the artistic maturation of the artist and her sounds with
its deep stoicism and beauty is awaiting for you to enter its labyrinth
of sound.

Parks, Cale
Sparklace (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US A little over a year since the release of Aloha and White Williams
drummer Cale Parks' solo debut album Illuminated Manuscript comes
Sparklace. There is a stark contrast between the two albums. Sparklace
stands as a more immediate album than its predecessor focusing on
songs with a pop structure whereas Parks' previous output was more
ambient and minimalisitc. Recorded in his home, every sound is original.
If there is a drum sample, it is from Parks' drum set. The vibraphone
is sampled as well. To say Parks has found his voice, is to miss the
point. Rather, the sound of Sparklace is singular and electronic with
born digital sounds. There is no wasted space, not a snare out of
place. Listen carefully as it settles in, fragile but not without
momentum.

PS, UK Their music has run the gauntlet between electronica, post-rock,
baroque, modern classical and even glitch, though in recent years
Piano Magic has settled on a unique, romantic, classic British alternative
rock that echoes the most vibrant work of their prime inspirations.
'Dark Horses,' the latest in their now annual 4-track EP transmissions,
nods, consciously or otherwise, to the likes of Joy Division, The
Smiths and The Chameleons, whilst managing to sound indisputably like
Piano Magic. These songs are built on pummeled drums, chainsaw guitars,
cathedral reverbs, insistent bass and Glen Johnson's reliably Morrissey-esque
observations on a life less sweet. 'Dark Horses' is Piano Magic's
first record for the exceptional independent, Make Mine Music. The
label is exclusively financed and maintained by its bands and therefore,
the proceeds of each record sold go immediately back to those who
made the music. Despite operating almost entirely beneath the radar
in their native UK, since their first release back in 1996, Piano
Magic have managed to successfully carve out a niche of their own
that constantly defies expectation and sidesteps music industry convention.
By never staying long on any one label, playing most of their concerts
abroad and consistently redefining their sound, the band has not only
survived against all odds but built up a solid, devout worldwide fan
base. Their 12 long players and 18 other format releases have featured
collaborations with Vasti Bunyan, Low, Tarwater, Hefner and Cornershop,
amongst others. They've sound-tracked a film by Spanish director,
Bigas Luna, signed on and off with the likes of 4AD, Darla, Morr Music,
Important Records, toured in Russia, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Spain,
Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and England. Even so, Piano Magic
remains, unashamedly, a "cult phenomena," not destined for
recognition until perhaps a decade after they finally call in the
ghost. When not fronting Piano Magic, Glen Johnson operates as Textile
Ranch - his new long-player, a collaboration with Victorian music
machinist, Plinth - is out this month (also on Make Mine Music). Johnson's
alternate project of electro-pop, under the name Future Conditional
released a splendid album, 'We Don't Just Disappear,' on LTM last
year.

The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the
Present (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US In The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from
Punk to the Present, by Scott Plagenhoef and Ryan Schreiber. Pitchfork
offers up their take on the 500 best songs of the past three decades.
Focusing on indie rock (Arcade Fire, The Shins), hip hop (Public Enemy,
Jay-Z), electronic (Daft Punk, Boards of Canada), pop (Madonna, Justin
Timberlake), metal (Metallica, Boris), and experimental underground
music (Suicide, Boredoms), it features all-new essays and reviews
written with the sharp wit and insight for which the site is known.
Kicking it off in 1977 with the birth of punk and independent music,
The Pitchfork 500 runs chronologically, with each chapter representing
a distinct period and offering a narrative of how the musical landscape
of the day influenced its artists. The book opens with David Bowie,
Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk, and Brian Eno, the "art-rock godfathers"
who set the tone and tenor for the next thirty years, and wraps up
in the present, when bands connect with new audiences through social
networking sites and prime-time TV placements -- and when a single
mp3 can turn a niche indie artist into a global sensation. Sidebars
like "Yacht Rock," "Runaway Trainwrecks," "Nanofads,"
and "Career Killers" call out some far-from-classic musical
trends and identify the guiltiest offenders. Softcover, 224 pages.

Plinth/Textile Ranch
The Rest, I Leave To The Poor (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, UK A postal collaboration between Plinth (Mike Tanner) and Textile
Ranch (Glen Johnson of Piano Magic). This 44 minute piece may structurally
resemble a classical composition - divided as it is into several interlocking
stanzas - but it's difficult to place it comfortably within the realm
of modern music. If anything, 'The Rest....' evokes the otherworldly,
fantastical obsessions of the Victorians (Conan Doyle, Lear, Grandville,
Wellcome, etc) through means of meticulously manipulated instrumentation,
samples and voice. Plinth, of course, is no stranger to Victoriana.
In 2007, the Dorset based multi-instrumentalist and founder of the
Dorset Paeans record label released, 'Plays Victorian Machine Music'
- an EP made up entirely from sounds generated by antiquated parlor
machines and music boxes.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter
and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician
in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded
entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where
both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned
with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100%
clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From
transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his
wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel
fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love'
shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group
he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant,
utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested
in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant
classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

The Door (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 14TH)
PS, US Consisting of members of Double Leopoards, Mouthus, etc, RK
has been an active 4-piece for a little more than a year now. They
have presided over a pair of twelve-inches, a couple of collections
of out of print singles, long gone burns & one full-length. Here
they traced a path away from the clamour they once knew, bathing slight
guitars, interlocking vocals & solemn basslines in reedy organs,
recalcitrant modular synths & spare Kraut repetition. The seemingly
tin eared would call it noise, but in these 8 hands such a set plays
as anything but, instead a (cough) syrupy stroll in search of the
ghosts of rock's classicist past.

Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio
work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer
based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews:
"a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling"
[The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual"
[Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep
Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett,
my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very
aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this
to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter
of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired
me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and
positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors
in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition
came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages
that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was
given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground.
Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish
folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother
was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to
take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short
rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed
a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded
separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello
EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33,
45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously,
and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience
moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and
extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Alpinisms (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, US Alpinism is an electronically enhanced pop record of dizzying
highs & claustrophobic lows, whose painstaking conception shows
in its detail-laden crevices. On the album's best tracks-the polyrhythmic
dream-pop of "Face to Face in High Places," the nervous
shimmer of "My Cabal," the menacing lilt of "Iamundernodisguise"-Curtis
constructs layers of shoegazing, moire-patterned guitars, while Alejandra
& Claudia Deheza intertwine their near-identical voices like the
fingers of praying hands. Throughout, the whole heavenly affair is
tethered to the ground with a glitchy, tribal thwomp. Technology collides
with cryptic religious imagery and good, old-fashioned rock music.

released by Space Age Recordings in cardboard sleeve wallet on October

different mix of the classic Spacemen 3 cover of the Red Krayola's
'Transparent Radiation' and appearing for the first time on CD, the
ultra rare remix of 'I Love You' (originally only 50 promo white label
vinyl copies were ever pressed). Rounding off this mini-album is a
studio version of Ecstasy Symphony. Track listing: These Blues Transparent
Radiation (violin mix) Modulated Tones I Love You (remix) Ecstasy
Symphony Spacemen 3 consisted of the core duo of Jason Pierce (Spiritualized)
and Sonic Boom a.k.a Peter Kember (Spectrum & E.A.R.) who formed
the group in Rugby , Warwickshire, having met at art college. Other
members of what would become a fluid lineup over the years included
Pete Bain (Bassman, also of The Darkside), Natty Brooker, Sterling
Roswell (Rosco), Will Carruthers, Jonny Mattock (Slipstream), and
for the final few shows, Mark Refoy (also of Slipstream). From the
outset Spacemen 3 had a very defined set of aesthetic principles.
They based almost their entire sound on their own concept of minimalism
- droning guitars, feedback, as few chords as possible, pounding drums
- with their motto 'Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to'.
Their minimalism bled into their stage show as well. Sitting down
to play their guitars and covered in the spinning colours of a cheap
psychedelic light show, their stage 'act' was very anti-performance.
Another striking aspect of Spacemen 3 was their willingness to cover
and share their influences. Song titles, lyrics and interviews were
peppered with references to bands and artists they believed shared
their 'minimal is maximal' aesthetic. The Velvet Underground, the
Rolling Stones, the Stooges, the MC5, early Captain Beefheart, free
jazz musician Sun Ra, the Silver Apples, 1960s garage punk such as
the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, the Electric Prunes, the Beach
Boys, Jan and Dean and other surf bands, 1980s rockabilly groups the
Cramps, the Gun Club, Tav Falco, blues and gospel acts like Muddy
Waters, Bo Diddley, the Staple Singers and John Lee Hooker, and the
production techniques of Joe Meek, Brian Wilson and Delia Derbyshire
were just some of the names mentioned by the band.

by Space Age Recordings in 1998. Having been out of print for many
years now a limited re-pressing of 500 copies will be available from
20th October to meet demand for this release. From the opening surging
waves of 'Streams Of Sorrow' with its controlled chaos and intoxicating
vocals, through 'The Edge's' mesmerizing monotone backing to Simeon's
90's beat poetry - like Allen Ginsberg reincarnated into his most
abstract nightmare, 'Whirlwind' with its plaintive vocals and warped
ambience held together by a trademark Sonic Boom drone pattern, to
'(I Don't Care if You) Never Come Back's' almost industrial-tribal
percussion, fleshed out by those unique Silver Apples oscillations
and Spectrum's ever present sense of wayward genius. 'A Lake Of Teardrops'

composers ever.

Transmission
Sublimity (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21st)
PS, UK This is one amazing ride from a four-headed creative monster
on heat that manages to blend musical beauty, torrential passion and
sheer malevolence, sometimes in the space of one track...First sound
on opening track Albion is Youth's unmistakable heaving bass before
Big Paul Ferguson steams in with the heaviest drums in the business.
Once the original Killing Joke rhythm section is underway on a crunching
post-punk funk vamp, Simon Tong's guitar appears in shrapnel clusters
lashed by Tim Bran's unearthly synth. Musical fireworks might be expected
from a line-up like this and Sublimity, the second album by Transmission,
doesn't disappoint. The pedigree is impeccable: Youth's production
credentials, his time with Paul in the Joke before ahead-of-its-time
super funk ensemble Brilliant. Simon's stint in the Verve line-up
which made Urban Hymns then Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and Paul Simenon's
The Good, The Bad & The Queen. Dreadzone co-founder Tim Bran plays
with Subsonar and The Orb. The group started gestating after Youth
and Simon became friends during the Urban Hymns sessions, which the
former co-produced. Tim entered the fray then, Paul in Spring 2005
after he met Youth at a Malicious Damage party and heard some demos.
Three months later they recorded debut album Beyond Light in three
days at London's legendary Olympic studios.

Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US By 1967, East St. Louis, Illinois, once dubbed an "All
American" city by the US Chamber Of Commerce, had become St.
Louis, Missouri's evil twin. Unemployment, drug addiction & vicious
gang activity put a dark & heavy lid on a bi-state area that once
cooked-up world-changing talent by the likes of Chuck Berry, Josephine
Baker & Miles Davis. But both cities still spawned heroes, and
ALLEN MERRY was one of them. Already a living legend for his early
work w/ Ray Charles & Ike Turner, Merry channeled his talent into
teaching, forming the YOUNG DISCIPLES through the South End Community
Center to keep kids off the streets, out of the gangs & into the
studio, where young men & women spiraling downward could ride
the spiral groove upward on Merry's own YODI, GATEWAY & MERRY
labels. W/ nearly 80 local youths involved from both sides of the

notorious gangs) encompassed solo acts, duos, male & female vocal
groups, a massive horn section & a troupe of African dancers.

White Hinterland
Luniculaire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Luniculaire. It sounds French, but it is in fact a word invented
byWhite Hinterland, taking parts of French words "lunaire"
(lunar) and "funiculaire" (funicular, as in railway) to
form the title of their second release. This EP is a highly ambitious
recording containing five songs all sung in French, and it expands
upon the wide palette of musical ideas heard onWhite Hinterland's
debut, Phylactery Factory. Featuring two original songs, plus covers
of songs made famous by Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Fontaine and Françoise
Hardy,White Hinterland feels right at home amid the musical tradition
laid out by these legends. From the opening groove of "Requiem
Pour Un Con," it is obvious thatWhite Hinterland is exploring
a plethora of musical ideas on Luniculaire. The funky rhythms and
scorching guitar of the Gainsbourg classic captures the spirit of
the original, but it's Casey Dienel's vocals that make this so special.
Hearing Dienel sing in French is a revelation - without the distraction
of English words you hear what a powerful instrument her voice is.White
Hinterland's "Chant de Grillon" explores a wider range of
sonic textures, many created by the layered guitar work of Alexis
Gideon, while the spooky and atmospheric "Mon Ami La Rose"
(originally made popular by Hardy) is subtle and beautiful. The original
version of "J'ai 26 Ans" was performed by Brigitte Fontaine
with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and here Dienel plays the role of
Fontaine while her band toys with flourishes of African rhythms and
Eastern drones. Throughout Luniculaire, and especially on "J'ai
26 Ans" and "Requiem Pour Un Con,"Matt Meyer's percussion
work is sublime - he layers an array of strange sounds and noises,
while maintaining the heavy groove throughout. The EP's closer, "Lunirascible"
has Dienel's voice at the center, and like Julie Tippetts, Elizabeth
Fraser or contemporary ScottWalker, Dienel offers vocals meant not
to deliver words, but simply tones, melody and texture. Like some
groovy, strange and psychedelic artifact clamored about by crate-digging
record collectors, Luniculaire is more than just an EP. It is a testament
toWhite Hinterland's deep musical vision and a taste of the greatness
to come.

1968 Moog Modular PICTURE DISC (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, UK Limited to 300. Two Ra Chord blasts of 'Switched on Bach' beauty
performed by WRANGLER and SCANNER who first met whilst fighting over
a copy of 'Switched on Paddy Kingsland' at a record fair. These Supraphon
pyjama wearing artisans have by loving of various knobs and switches,
the sweet caressing of sequencers and event generators and manipulation
of patch cords, created the sounds and rhythms for a discerning ear.
Whilst Benge / Winters and Scanner have avoided the trap of being
academic beard noodlers with this release, they have invoked the spirit
of John Baker, White Noise and of course Bob Moog. Featuring sounds
made exclusively on the Moog Modular System 3C and the Formant Modular
Synthesiser this seven inch is a radiophonic joy, working as a platter
to play out as well as a companion piece to their Twenty Systems meisterwork.
Fans of Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Wendy Carlos, Brian Eno or
the recent John Baker Tapes are recommended to check this.
