Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The Perishers "Victorious" CD (ON SALE) $16.00 (Nettwerk)
New album of soft-rock melancholies and soothing pop atmospheres from excellent Swedish mopes, who seduced Parasol with their majestic import debut 5 years ago, rekindled the flames with Let There Be Morning, had plenty of their songs featured in all the hot TV shows, and now emerge victorious (sorry, had to) with their new album, their second for Nettwerk. This has been in heavy rotation since the advance arrived (Roy’s a huge fan, he has played it 119 times by last count) and comes highly recommended. Sound samples on the front page.

Yalda
PS, POLAND A fabulous album from Amir Baghiri displaying a captivating virtuosity on a wide range of African, middle eastern and Asian percussion instruments. Ambience comes from the field recordings and found sounds, and everything's subtly processed to create a rich, exotic soundtrack that recalls old school masters like Zakir Hussain as well as the 'fourth world' music of Sun City Girls, Muslimgauze or Jon Hassell.

PS, BELGIUM Old things explains why it took Jessica Bailiff so long to put out her third record. This album brings you a collection of rarities and unreleased material, recorded between 1999 and 2002, whilst also working on her critically acclaimed records on Kranky. Some songs have the familiar sound of her first records (Alan Sparhawk of Low still plays on one of them), but already hint in the direction of the more folky current sound. track list: Your sounds make patterns in my eyes Helpless Warren (Home version) Shadow Crush, version 2 Amethyst depression Maybe tomorrow Let time breathe Nicholson square 2 For April Figure eight (For Jonathan)

Belott, Brian
Wipe That Clock Off Your Face
PS, US Brian Belott's first book is a compendium of all his disparate artistic practices-including collage, drawing, found photography and sound mixing-and it is also his first CD. The original CD/DVD included here offers the acclaimed Found Images, a digital slideshow of over 2000 photos with an exclusive full-length soundtrack of original sound collages. Assemblage permeates Belott's methods; he is a master of using cast-off and neglected ephemera to create new and surprising effects. The New York Times critic Holland Cotter calls the results "imaginatively inviting," and the Times' Roberta Smith calls them "radiant." The well-known painter Donald Baechler's foreword speaks to Belott's place in the realm of creation from found materials. Belott's world is like a trip through a funhouse of vernacular art: enter at your own risk.

Chico Hamilton Quintet & Fred Katz
Classical Katz
PS, UK Chico Hamilton Quintet & Fred Katz : Classical Katz along with the Modern Jazz Quartet, the Chico Hamilton Quintet with Fred Katz were the leading practitioners of chamber jazz, devoted to a mid-century blend of classical and jazz music that called itself third stream; it was the shape of things to come for progressive jazz. Eric Dolphy and Gabor Szabo were amongst the figures who would eventually work with Hamilton. Our set couples the entire, highly regarded album "Zen" by cellist Fred Katz where he is backed by Hamilton and the Quintet along with the highlights of the Quintet's own 1956 set. Both albums are highly sought after and long out of print. This Hamilton-Katz line-up would feature famously the following year (1957) in the Burt Lancaster- Tony Curtis film "The Sweet Smell Of Success"; a great cinematic moment in jazz. Clare & the Reasons
Movie
PS, US PREFIX MAG: "Between the new Edith Piaf biopic La Vie en rose and the five hundred other current movies inexplicably relating Paris) to romance, you'd think the world would have no need for another bohemian fix. Yet, the members of Clare & the Reasons plead for room with such earnestness on their debut that we must pause to take listen. Led by a chick with chirping charm (and as the daughter of folk/blues musician Geoff Muldaur, a distinguished musical lineage) and filled out by a posse of Brooklyn's finest, the group tiptoes lightly upon emotions and all that gushy stuff. On its sophisticated takes on the neo-baroque and quasi-noir, the group is joined here by such distinguished songwriting talent as Van Dyke Parks and Sufjan Stevens." (Dan Nishimoto)

Coathangers
S-T
PS, US Imagine if you will a marriage of the Beastie Boys circa Some Old Bullshit & the Slits when they were still a punk band & you're in the right ballpark. They're newcomers to Atlanta's vibrant punk, pop & experimental music scene, but the group has risen quickly through the ranks to become one of the city's most talked about acts. These women are real deal feminists, armed w/ a brash & irreverent sense of humor. They're more likely to be caught cracking jokes w/ Andrew W.K. than sharing tea & vegan cookies with Kathleen Hannaha's crew!

Electro Group
Good Technology
PS, US Comprised of "three like minded and cautiously optimistic gentlemen out to create and build songs culled from years of self-induced isolationism, sexual regret, and audio experimentation", Electro Group teamed up with local Sacramento imprint Omnibus Records (The Shins, Mates of State, Flake Music) to issue their 2001 debut, A New Pacifica. Its tracks surfaced on more than a few taste making college and community radio stations, and even made it to the play list of legendary BBC DJ John Peel. A slew of compilation appearances and side projects followed: Electro Group recorded a series of split 7- inches, teamed up with Pavement cofounder Gary Young for a cover of Sonic Youth's "100%," and bassist Ian Hernandez formed Holy Smokes with Pinback's Rob Crow and Hella's Zach Hill. Live appearances with Sleater-Kinney, Quasi and The Swords Project followed, as did a tour of the UK, and their next studio venture, the 2004 seven-track mini-album Ummo. With their second proper full-length, Good Technology, Electro Group had to destroy their conceptions of not only music, but also modern life in general, and reconstruct them from square one. While A New Pacifica explored a utopian society in the aftermath of California falling into the sea and Ummo queried, "Are we alone in the universe?" Good Technology finds Electro Group in a deconstructionist mindset. As Hernandez reveals, "Good Technology exhibits the natural songwriting and recording progression exhibited in our previous self recorded endeavors. Since those releases, a better understanding of multi-track recording and those techniques associated with the capture of and replication of those sounds on audio disk, helped provide a stronger foundation for the new record while still retaining those familiar audio properties." It's a rapidly changing world we live in, and the futuristic, guitar-driven fuzz-pop of Good Technology provides an ideal soundtrack for it. What more lies ahead? As guitarist/vocalist Tim Jacobson summarizes, "Great quality." Not to mention good technology.

Even As We Speak
A Three Minute Pop Song is One Minute Too Long
PS, UK A 17 track compilation of the rare Australian singles. "Even As We Speak relish life with a clutch of songs that evoke images of bright summer mornings in leafy suburbia" - Melody Maker "Even As We Speak are in possession of two qualities which set them apart from you average guitar-pop band: firstly, a total lack of pretense which gives them a decidedly casual, almost offhand stage presense (rarely do they ever dress up, let alone pose) and secondly, the striking songwriting talent of singer/guitaruist Matthew Love, the author of neat pop sogs that manage to be emotive, offbeat and very appealing in the classic sense". Tracklisting: 1 100 2 Pleasure Circles 3 Anybody Anyway 4 Brain 5 Outgrown 6 Goes So Slow 7 Nothing Ever Happens 8 A Stranger Calls 9 Blue Suburban Skies 10 Bizarre Love Triangle 11 Looking Over Your Shoulder 12 By The Side Of The Road 13 I Can Do Without You 14 Falling Down 15 I Won't Have To Think About You 16 Single To Central 17 Galveston.

PS, US A contempo 3 piece hailing out've Seattle feat.ex-members of A FRAMES & THE INTELLIGENCE.Originally released as a CD in '04, this shows a band burrowed deep in the mystery &menace of the nascent gnarl of experimental art rock. Ferrari, Luc
Didascalies (CD/DVD)
PS, US Now packaged w/ a DVD feat. him at work on this, his last experiment. He's considered one of the most legendary musical figures of the 20th century, whose work & aesthetic continues to influence several generations of contemporary composers. Right from the start, the idea had been to release 3 very different CDs: one horspiel, one of concrete music & one CD of instrumental works. Also documents the composition of a new version of "Tautologos," his last recorded piece, w/ woven piano & viola breaking down, starting anew in an opposite direction w/ bandoneon, DX7 & books being closed every 2 & a half min. About a month later, he passed away

Fourth of July
On the Plains
PS, US This is a Lawrence, Kansas band insofar as the signals sent from coast to coast get filtered through their eyes & ears, leaving them utterly clued-in yet carelessly left-out. The songs are full of intimate interactions, cutting observations & dreamy, heartfelt candor, but when brought to the band they explode into amplified urgency & bold, bright heartland-pop

From the time he was born, he was surrounded by music of all genres thanks to his eccentric classical-record-producer & pianist father, a Hari Krishna brother & 2 older sisters who were in various rock bands (his sister Juliette Commagere is the singer of L.A. indie band HELLO STRANGER in which Robert played bass)

Giantess
S-T
PS, US Formerly known as Canada's "The Battles". Giantess is a blistering exercise in profundity, veering wildly from accelerated rave-ups to introspective ballads that tug at the heart (often with tongue planted firmly in cheek). Giantess delivers with the poetic grandeur of Bryan Ferry or Graeme Downs at their absolute peak, and with the muscle & pathos of The Soft Boys or Jesus of Cool-era Nick Lowe. Giantess is first & foremost a relationship record that relies on sentiments both ridiculously absurd & vastly astute. A British influence looms large in Stephen Wood's brilliant songwriting- comparisons to Ray Davies & John Lennon are commonplace -in much the same way those pillars informed Robert Pollard's forays into songs. Likewise, Giantess' erstwhile approach thrusts the genre forward with liberal swaths of heart, wit, warmth, melody & raw power.

Golden Animals
Golden Animals EP
PS, US Brooklyn's Golden Animals deliver a meticulous recreation of L.A. in 1970, when The Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" had steeped in hipster consciousness and the counter-culture was embracing country music with a vengeance. From the warm, natural recording quality right down to the sepia-toned cover art dressed as (stoned) old west dandies, these guys are living the life! They are entering the studio in San Francisco with producer extraordinaire Chris Coady (Blonde Redhead, Yeah Yeah Yeah¹s, T.V. On The Radio) in late October to make a record for Happy Parts Recordings.

Golden Dogs
Big Eye Little Eye
PS, US Skirting the line between ready-for-TV pop addictiveness & grimy knife's-edge guitar bombast, the Canadian group seamlessly blends hooks & crunch into a bright, art-conscious swirl as catchy as it is cool. The band has torn a jagged rift through the clubs of Canada, jumping off amps & pushing PA's to their limit from Toronto to Vancouver. Hooky enough for the pop fiends, hard enough for the dope fiends.

Hawkwind
Space Ritual [collector's edition]
PS, US PITCHFORK: "Aside from Sun Ra, few artists captured that sense of mind-warping, my-God-it's-full-of-stars astronomical mysticism in their music like Hawkwind. With their tendency towards extended jams full of disorienting electronic drones and drummer Simon King's motorik rhythms, they had a certain creative kinship with their Krautrock contemporaries. But their racket could also be as unrelentingly punchy and violent as anything from the Stooges' Fun House, especially considering guitarist Dave Brock's Ron Asheton-esque affinity for blistering, wah-wah-drenched riffs and Nik Turner's freeform sax outbursts... It was all put to good use by their lyrics and their philosophy, much of which was inspired by the writing of sci-fi author and sometime collaborator Michael Moorcock, and typically themed around interstellar travel, metaphysics and Pythagoras' theory of celestial-mathematical "music of the spheres." ...The set has been expanded from its original "88 minutes of brain damage" (as a 1973 print ad hilariously put it) to just over two hours, with most of the added material devoted to a few alternate takes and the restoration of a few minutes here and there that had to be cut for the original United Artists double LP. (A bonus DVD includes the whole shebang in Dolby, and despite it being in PAL format, North American viewers should be able to hear it on their PCs or DVD players.)"

Liars
S-T
PS, US What do you expect from Liars? Noise? Concept? Both? This LP delivers neither! Recorded on the heels of 2006's 'Drum's Not Dead' somewhere between LA and Berlin, Liars' 4th album marks another bold transition for Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross. For the new album Liars have foregone theory for a more practical approach, one based on traditional song structures and instrument usage. Even mainman Angus is shocked! They've foregone theory for a more practical approach, one based on traditional song structures &instrument usage. An album that manages to balance the old, experimentally minded Liars w/ an excitingly insidious new pop edge.

Lionheart, Ferraby
Catch the Brass Ring (ON SALE)
PS, US VENUS MAGAZINE: "There is a boy called Ferraby Lionheart who lives in Los Angeles and plays songs that sound like early Rufus Wainwright. The 19-year-old grew up in Nashville, where people had a hard time pronouncing his name... [Later on,] in Los Angeles, Lionheart toiled away in a rock band called Telecast, but soon, he became uninspired, so he recorded some of the stripped-down, folk-inspired songs that he'd been writing by himself... An album of airy and pretty songs that perfectly soundtrack a day of playing in parks and on swings." And the rest, as they say, is history.

Magic Carpathians Project
Sonic Suicide #1
PS, POLAND MAGIC CARPATHIANS PROJECT's new release, Sonic Suicide, is as surprising and as challenging as every one of their previous albums. The figure of suicide designates the moment of closure and transformation, not far from orgasmic density and bodily pleasures of sounds on the album. The music here creates intense, vibrating, rhizomatic field of electric pulsations, drones and irregularities. This time Magic Carpathians Project's line up has been scaled down to just two of core members who have been establishing the name since 1998: ANNA NACHER (mistreated electric guitars, voice, lyrics, media manipulation and bastardization, loops, field recordings) and MAREK STYCZYNSKI (homemade analog sound modulator, field recordings, saxophone, clarinet, flutes, gongs, percussions). A prototype version of analog sound modulator--called badoog--which emits soundwaves of sinusoidal amplitude and frequencies reaching out beyond the standard range audible to human ear has been designed and built especially for this session. Anna Nacher sings, screams and soars both in English and Polish, occasionally inhabiting the space between languages or mixing up the dialects, idioms and pronunciations. Field recordings taken by the duo during their travels across Himalaya, Carpathians and Balkans are employed as signs of hybridic soundscape of cultural nomads, far from overproduced and colonized idioms of 'world music'. Only for the bravest of the bravest!

Manual
Lost Days, Open Skies and Streaming Tides
PS, US The long awaited Manual double-CD 'Lost Days, Open Skies and Streaming Tides' - a collection of rarities, remixes, covers, unreleased pieces and brand new tracks - including a new collaboration with Cocteau Twins mainman Robin Guthrie. Spanning the period from 2002, around Ascend, up to now, this is a collection that covers the entire spectrum of Jonas Munks stylings; from the minimalist drone soundscapes, to the over-the-top 1980s influenced shoegazing electronica à la his masterpiece Azure Vista, from the sweet pop-influenced gems to abstract blissed-out timeless ambient. Munk's trademarks are all over the 19 pieces on this double disc set: the highly adventurous sense of composition that is still so unheard of in electronic music - always taking the listener on a colourful journey instead of relying on repetitions like pretty much every other electronic artist -, the mix of well-programmed beats and electronics against surreal, shimmering, heavily treated guitars, and the sunbathed 1980s romantic melancholia that has become Jonas Munk's signature sound. It is hard to think of a more perfect introduction to Munk's music, and for fans of his work this is simply a must!

Mighty Baby
S-T [expanded] (ON SALE)
PS, UK Yet another genius recording from post-Action late-60s, early 70s UK psychedelic pop group Mighty Baby, comparable to early-Who, The Action (duh),The Creation, etc. Their original self-titled album plus 5 additional tracks by The Action. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This hour-long CD is one of the best bodies of British psychedelia ever released. It contains the complete Mighty Baby album from Head Records, expanded to 13 tracks with the addition of five tracks cut by the Action during its 1967 transition period... The beauty of the original Mighty Baby album tracks is that they're psychedelia with a solid beat, none of that noodle-rock that drugged-up Brits usually engaged in...some of the most energetic psychedelia to come out of England, and anyone who enjoys psychedelic guitar will love Martin Stone's and Alan King's work on this album. A near perfect meld of garage rock and psychedelic sensibilities." (Bruce Eder)

Monster Movie
Last Night Something Happened
PS, US The debut album from Monster Movie - long out of print - has been rebirthed. Artwork has been revamped, a new catalog number has been assigned, and the bonus track from the long-OOP vinyl version of the album, previously unavailable on CD in the US, has been added. Written, performed & produced by Christian Savill & Sean Hewson, Last Night Something Happened was a landmark follow-up to their self-titled debut EP from early 2001. The album, recorded between March and August 2001 at The White House studio in Weston-Super-Mare with Martin Nichols engineering (also the birthplace of their debut EP as well as Slowdive's 'Souvlaki'), shows a move away from the layered guitars and strong vocals of the EP to a more somber, subdued & warm sound. Here the vocals are more often layered with Martin Wheeler & Louise Hewson, adding their vocals to those of the band, to create a ghostly, disembodied effect. The instrumentation is more varied here as well, with cheap keyboards and acoustic guitars mixing with radios, feedback & broken effects pedals to create a warm hum. As with the debut EP, the songwriting is still a strong point but Monster Movie have moved forwards, investigating instrumental songs (witness the cinematic 'Star City') and structure (a la the Faust-like sudden change in 'Winter Is Coming'). Everything on here has a great tune even when it is layers of noise, but the most obvious pop songs are 'Waiting', 'Shortwave', 'Take Me Away', '4th & Pine' & 'Home' with 'Sleeping On A Train' providing a change of pace & some rock action. Last Night Something Happened was a phenomenal precursor to the subsequent years of Monster Movie magic - and as such, remains their best work to date. Monster Movie were known to be collectively fond of Grandaddy, Air, Yo La Tengo & the Super Furry Animals during the recording of this album. They were also more likely to be influenced by their intense and occasionally psychotic dislike of most other rock music. Their individual tastes are not considered 'sexy' enough to be listed.

New Young Pony Club
Fantastic Playroom
PS, US It's a singular chemistry between front woman Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence that's marked New Young Pony Club as one of 2007's most talked-about, must-hear, must-see bands. NYPC singles "Ice Cream" (used in a recent Intel commercial campaign) and "The Bomb" have already proved irresistible. And they have made good on Tahita and Andy's hopes: to put the fun back in music, and get people dancing. Now NYPC have done more than perhaps would be reasonably expected of a great singles band: they've made a great album, Fantastic Playroom. It's everything you hope every album is going to be. Packed with tunes, yes - but literate, funny, sad, just-weird-enough, crazy, sexy and cool to boot. (Sometimes, dancebased music forgets it's allowed to be all these things.) From an undeniable "Get Lucky"/"Hiding On The Staircase"/"Ice Cream"/"The Bomb" opening salvo to the potential-future-NYPC-direction and quite Grace Jones-y "FAN" via the overtly pop "Grey", it gets everything right.

Newell, Martin
A Summer Tamarind
PS, UK Martin Newell - The last English pop eccentric, brings out his first solo album for several years. Many people try for an authentic 60s sound, Newell actually lives it. This sunny-days mixture wears its Beatles / Kinks influences like a double-breasted paisley jacket is also surprisingly modern though. Contained herein are eleven bomb-proof three and a half-minute pop songs dressed with chiming Rickenbacker 12-string guitars, great garden-shed drumming and the type of gorgeous harmonies that no-one else bothers doing anymore. A Summer Tamarind is nothing less than a post-punk Rubber Soul and probably the best thing that Martin Newell has done since his Andy Partridge-produced Greatest Living Englishman album.

No Age
Weirdo Rippers
PS, US PITCHFORK: "A loud duo with art credibility, a massive touring schedule, and a one-man label in its ranks brings Lightning Bolt to mind; but No Age have a softer surf-psychedelic side that conjures another twosome: old Olympia favorites Kicking Giant. Or, as another Pitchfork staffer pointed out, the best K Records fuzz-rock band of all time, Lync. No Age, though, goes into an even airier, bedroom-pretty realm, with a punk rawness to their delivery. Their oft-chanted hooks (see "Boy Void" or "Every Artist Needs A Tragedy") are out-of-phase, the approach sloppy and spastic. At the same time, these songs come off soporific, restful, and totally in control. Nothing grates. It all feels soft and up-close."

Perishers
Victorious (ON SALE)
PS, US New album of soft-pop melancholies and majesties from excellent Swedish mopes. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With their third album Victorious, The Perishers should finally put an end to the hackneyed references to their Swedish homeland, and the cliched use of such modifiers as "icy," "glacial," "glassy," et al. For this set is imbued with such warmth, its sound so glowing, that reviewers will have no choice but to look elsewhere for their adjectives. The Perishers can thank Per Sunding for that, his production bathing their music in luminescent, highlighting their fragile, exquisite atmospheres, and throwing into relief their sublime instrumental interplay... Victorious' true glory is found in the richness of the sound, the iridescent melodies, shimmering atmospheres, and Ola Kluft's introspective, yet universal lyrics. With Victorious, The Perishers truly conquer all." (Jo-Ann Greene)

Avant-Dernières Pensées: Selected Piano Works features several of Satie's best known compositions, including the famously poised Trois Gymnopédies, all six haunting Gnossiennes and Je te veux, as well as more experimental pieces such as Descriptions automatiques, Avant-dernières pensées and Sports et divertissements, an extraordinary collection of 21 miniatures from 1914 with illustrations by Charles Martin. Also included is Satie's single-act, neo-Dada lyric comedy Le Piège de Médusa, and comprising 'seven tiny dances for Jonah the Monkey' and illustrated by the Cubist painter Georges Braque. Sally O'Gannon
PS, US "Debut single from these London-based Brazilians...Insanely catchy chorus + Incredibly Loud guitars + perfect pop music." - New Musical Express, UK The Tamborines are a Brazilian born London based fuzz rock band. Their debut US release, "Sally O'Gannon" EP (PSRCD-042) has been a long awaited affair but one you will agree was well worth the wait. The CD contains four adventurous tracks - the fuzzy guitar intro and thumping drums make "Sally O'Gannon" an instant pop classic. The soft acoustics and sweet melodies of the AA-side "Be Around" show you The Tamborines aren't just about noisy guitars. The psychedelic garage pop atmospheres of "Come Together" drift throughout - capping it off with a hip mid 60's guitar break. That most hallucinogenic of all films, Fellini's "Toby Dammit" is featured with a selection from Nino Rota's famous score along with a panorama of superlative performances and rare recordings from such masters as Morricone, Piero Piccioni and Umiliani, Berto Pisano and Claudio Gizzi (former music director for the films of Andy Warhol) who's main title for Roman Polanski's notorious "What?" is included here in digital format for the first time. Nowe:Le
PS, POLAND A electronic compilation from Poland's Vivo label, Nowe:le has tagged itself as being psychedelically ambient, coldly computerized, ethnical experimentronic, and heat addled by a passage through the Texan desert. "Nowele" is Polish for "short stories" and the seven artists represented here (hailing from Japan, Poland, and the United States) offer eleven sonic shorts, which are meant to unfold behind your eyes. Nowe:le starts off with a bubbling glitch track from Maciek Szymczuk. "Uruk" simmers with electrical signals, some popping and crackling like exploding molecules, while other currents string themselves together into swirling, darting melodies. "Uruk" is a petri dish dance party seen through an electron microscope.

VHS or Beta
Bring on the Comets
PS, US Louisville's VHS OR BETA makes its boldest move yet with the release of their third full-length album, Bring On The Comets. Bring On The Comets provides heartfelt anthems with a newfound discovery of musical freedom, a shedding of previous expectation and boundary, and an undeniable return to pop music. The first single, "Can't Believe A Single Word," is a storming piano-driven mini-epic, with Pfunder's soaring, dramatic vocals swelling to a fist-pumping chorus. The title track, is a grand, slide-guitar infused larger-than-life adventure."Fall Down Lightly," vitally captures every element of VHS OR BETA's revamped new sound: here, discordant punk-funk mutates into a classic filter-disco groove, giving way to a startlingly catchy chorus describing a relationship's tumble into l'amour fou. VHS OR BETA-today a trio comprising core members vocalist/guitarist Craig Pfunder, bassist Mark Palgy and drummer Mark Guidry- recorded Bring On The Comets with up-and-coming producer Brendan Mason (Secret Machines, David Bowie) in Asheville, NC and Nashville, TN.

PS, US After years of outer space exploration in YUME BITSU & SURFACE OF ECEYON, as well as stints as a hired gun for a multitude of artists incl. Dirty Projectors, Jackie-O Motherfucker & Devendra Banhart, he decided to turn his focus inward & began to record solo material. At a somewhat brief 71 min., this pulses & flows w /mantric chants, clattering percussions, sighing sustains & guitar leads unashamed of their scorching transcendence. He breathes new life into archaic sub-genres such as progrock, new age,& hippie folk incantations, while never stooping to the negative aspects of any of them, & remaining a step ahead of the technologically crippled & virtuosuo-less looper pedal scene.

Zenial
Reworked
PS, POLAND The very fact that Polish digi-sound explorer Lukasz Szalankiewicz's debut release (beyond the few compilation appearances so far garnered) amounts to a collection of reworkings of his material by artists whom he either respects or shares his mission with appears to make far more sense than going it alone to try and stake out his position. As such, collaborative pieces with Kasper T. Toeplitz, Andrew Duke and others run alongside remixes by Kazuyuki K. Null, Vidna Obmana, Andrew Lagowski, Amir Baghiri, Tetsuo Furudate, Zbigniew Karkowski and Zenial himself. Most of these, in turn, subscribe to the notion of exorcising new glacial shapes from the material sourced, but it's actually during the more rhythmic settings of Vidna Obmana's "Palsecam Theme (Recycled)' and Amir Baghiri's 'Ilustracja#1/E-nimalic' that things take on a more muscular life of their own.

PS, US AcidMothersGuruGuru features Mani Neumeier from the legendary and influential German Krautrock group Guru Guru as well as Kawabata Makoto and Atsushi Tsuyama from Japan's holy Acid Mothers Temple. The result is a fiery fantasy filled, loud/soft, colorful trans-generational psychedelic collaboration. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru started in a spontaneous session in March of 2006 in Nagoya, Japan. When the improvisation commenced the passionate excitement was clear to all in the room and it was then that this special psychedelic trio began. A Japanese tour was planned, an album was recorded and this recording is the fruit of this mutual musical admiration. While all involved will admit that this is a dream of collaborations it was the Acid Mothers Temple guys who were worshipping Guru Guru in their teens. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru is two generations of psychedelic rock joining forces for the 21st century.

Allen, Daevid
Good Morning! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, UK In 1975, following his departure from GONG, the highly influential group he had founded, Daevid Allen sought musical solace in the village of Deja on the island of Mallorca. Here he encountered a group of Catalan musicians, Euterpe, with whom Allen began collaborating. Recorded in Mallorca, the album "GOOD MORNING" was released by Virgin Records in 1976 to great acclaim, being a unique work that was regarded by fans and critics as being equally as good as anything he recorded with GONG, if not better. Filled with Allen's startling original musical observations, "GOOD MORNING" appeared briefly on CD in the early 1990's and vanished quickly. Long sought after by the legions of GONG / DAEVID ALLEN followers, ESOTERIC RECORDINGS is proud to announce the reissue of this album with fully restored artwork and superb 24-bit digitally remastered sound. It describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle & roam free: strings & mallet instruments; rock guitar & gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion & muscular studio drumming. Little Eyes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Recorded in one continuous take in NYC, 1970. Made with little more than magnetic tape, Ed's voice, and the stunningly modern arrangements of his beloved Martin Tiple, "Little Eyes" is as grand, sad, and beautiful a statement as can be expressed. His off-key lilt hangs like a seductive pink mist, and settles deeply; you'll hear these songs long after they're over. Attempting to publicize an unreleased record, Ed did a string of radio gigs between NY and New Haven, and the best of them are collected here. Lovely and wild.

PS, US Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Black Cab
Jesus East [2007] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, GERMANY New album from Australian psych-o-nauts. Jesus East is something of an antidote to the fear and loathing of their debut album, Altamont Diary, blending late '60's and early '70's rock sounds with loops and subtle electronica over pulsing percussion and driving guitars reminiscent of some of the great German rock bands of the '70's. Jesus East evokes ghosts of the Velvet Underground, Can, Neu and coolest Beatle George Harrison's fascination with eastern sounds.UNCUT MAGAZINE (4 STARS): "The dark side of hippie-dom, updated and energised... Two years ago this Melbourne duo - Andrew Coates and James Lee - delivered a dark-horse diamond with Altamont Diary, their compelling, sinister concept album inspired by The Stones' dread day of '69. Their second sticks to no strict storyline but advances their mix of psyched-out 60s guitars/sitars and late 70s Teutonic rhythms to heart-stopping effect. It's accumulatively epic: it begins as a fine Spacemen 3/Neu pastiche, but by the roaring climax its pulse-rockets are firing way beyond genre. As a finale Sam Cutler, M.C. at Altamont and Stones/Grateful Dead manager, drawls a languidly poetic memoir over "Valiant", while guitars mentally creep. Utterly riveting." (CR)

Black Lips
Good Bad Not Evil (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US This debut succinctly epitomizes all that's special about Atlanta's favorite flower punk sons: the uncontained energy, undeniable songcraft, and unrivaled showmanship are all on full display, as is a newfound sense of the world around them. Songs like "Katrina" and "Bad Kids" spare none of the Black Lips' trademark smirk and smear, but also demonstrate a purpose and perspective not always at the forefront of the band's music. "Good Bad Not Evil" traffics in the kind of ragged rock harmony missing from record stores for so long.

Blind WIllie Johnson
Nobody's Fault But Mine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK "Blind" Willie Johnson straddled that spooky border between blues and spirituals. Among musicians, he is considered one of the greatest slide or bottleneck guitarists, as well as one of the most revered figures of depression-era gospel music. Covered by everyone from Peter, Paul and Mary to Led Zeppelin to Fairport Convention to Bob Dylan to Beck to The White Stripes, he is one of those almost secret figures who seemingly influence everything. Ry Coooder's soundtrack to "Paris, Texas" was conceived as a distillation of his work and spirit. Willie Johnson's life in itself reads like an early blues, blinded at age seven by his own mother in a fight with his errant father, living as an itinerant preacher and singer, having to live in the burnt out ruin of his ramshackle house after a fire, on a wet mattress, which eventually helped kill him, pneumonia, malarial fever and syphilis being a powerful combo. A major figure in the "eerie voiced" blues genre typified by Robert Johnson, Skip James and others, that sense-of dread hellhound on my trail atmosphere which makes great movies...Here is a collection of Blind Willie Johnson's finest, with his slashing 12 string and scary slide all over them...Blind Willie's song Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground was included on the Voyager Golden Record, sent into space with the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Out there, there may be life forms hearing the sounds of Blind Willie Johnson. Are you ready for it? A rich, strange, and wonderful collection of Blind Willie Johnson's best! Lovingly packaged with wonderful memorabilia and detailed notes by our man in the world of I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, Mr. Vic Templar! Beautifully remastered in RevOla-sonic sound by Joe Foster and Norman Blake at the secretly located Studio 3! A must for ANYONE who likes the magical, eerie and scary sound of all the people mentioned above..."adapted" by Led Zep, launched into space, covered by The White Stripes...surely you have to check out Willie's scary world of black cat bones and revelators and cold, cold graves!

Blow, The
Parentheses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US THE BLOW's smash hit from "Paper Television" is finally available on an attractive 7" with a fine selection of remixes from some talented friends. Lille, France based trio DAT POLITICS have taken the mellow, springlike love song on a bouncy rollercoaster ride. A hyperactive beat mashup has replaced the original beat, while keeping singer KHAELA MARICICH's sweet voice safely belted through the loops. London's new premiere resident DJ RORY PHILLIPS is one of the heroes of The End's Trash (now Durr) Club fame. Fresh off of remixes for FRANZ FERDINAND and LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, Phillips has given "Parenthesis" a more sensitive treatment, transforming the rhythm into a static, repetitive, but cool house beat. Rounding out this single is the previously unreleased "Get Around," a frantic, dynamic gem from the "Paper Television" sessions that you shouldn't miss!

Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

OLIVIA NESS (bass, drums, vocals) and CHRIS SUTTON (drums, bass, vocals) have been tapping the primal groove for a while now using only the most basic of instrumentation, but this time our explorers have decided to travel to the outer limits of the beat. C.O.C.O.'s mission is simple: "Play Drums + Bass" and that credo was the inspiration for their third - without a doubt their best - record. The musical spectrum continues to expand into the nether regions of dub reggae (for a tribute to the late great TAMARA DOBSON) all the way to the sunny side of surf rock.

Cake, The
Cream Of The Cake (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK What links New Orleans Maestro Harold Battiste, Dr. John, The Soft Machine, The Daily Flash, Tiny Tim, Jack Nitsche, Sonny and Cher, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Ginger Baker's Airforce? THE CAKE. The last of the classic girl groups, whose two 1967/68 albums are as they say a game of two (sometimes three!) halves, classic girlgroupisms mixed with Baroque Pop, Wyrd Folk, Psychpop and club R&B, all with a wonderful good humour. Fans of the esoteric might care to know that Kevin Ayers' song "Eleanor's Cake Which Ate Her" is about the group...that they sang backing vocals on Electric Ladyland and the first Soft Machine album...and that Eleanor herself sang 'I Got You Babe' with Tiny Tim (backed by The Band) in the cult movie "You Are What You Eat". And are the albums any good? Yes, by yiminy, they are! A wonderful snapshot of the Sunset Strip, with a wonderfully decadent atmosphere for three such innocent girls...you'll just love it! The Cake recently reformed to play the prestigious launch party for the forthcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic, and who knows - they may come to your town soon... At great personal cost, RevOla presents THE CAKE! Never previously on CD cult artists...and they look hot in pictures too! Wonderfully re-mastered by Mr. Nick Robbins and with gorgeous packaging featuring wonderful pictures provided by THE CAKE and legendary rock photographer Ed Caraeff (The Cake took the shy young Ed to Monterey, where he took his first famous photos of Jimi Hendrix). There's also more than extensive liner notes by Tiny Tim biographer Chris Campion...at last, the full story can be told! Interviews with Harold Battiste, Kim Fowley, Rodney Bingenheimer, Kevin Ayers, you name them, they are here! A must for all girl group and Northern Soul fans, lovers of Baroque Pop, Psychpop and Wyrd Folk...you know the drill!

North Star Deserter (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US One of the finest songsmiths of today. His words will knock you out, his voice is like no other, and the two combined deliver lyrical phrases that echo in your brain forever. The songs on this release are among his most bracing & intense. Stripped down songs are juxtaposed with explosive rockers. The broad cast of players include all 7 members of THEE SILVER MT. ZION, along with Guy Picciotto (FUGAZI), Chad Jones & Nadia Moss (FRANKIE SPARO), Eric Craven *Genevieve Heistek (HANGEDUP), Bruce awdron(GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR) and T.Griffin (The Quavers). Circle
Katapult (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Finland's Circle are one of the leading psych-rock bands playing today, releasing records and touring for over a decade now. Founding member Jussi Lehtisalo handles the majority of vocal duties with a gruff, low-end growl. The music is heavy and atmospheric with repetitive riffs and haunted keyboards which create a twisted, spooky mood. Influenced by equal parts 60s psychedelia and venom, "Katapult" is perhaps the most diverse, groundbreaking, dark, and primitive Circle album yet.

PS, US A bombastic, rough around the edges approach to minimalist hardcore. Combining the jagged aggression of bands like Swiz & Black Flag w/ the spastic urgency of Drive Like Jehu, this embraces a lyrically raw directness that transcends the false conceptions &misgivings of modern punk. They embrace the long lost art of disposability, steering away from the culture of celebratory fake aggression, into a new era of raw, incendiary punk music.

The CD features 7 bonus tracks bringing together for the first time, all the tracks from all the various limited edition versions of the original release. Also included is The Cure front man Robert Smith's remix of the single 'Jewel' which is taken from the album "Jewel". Cranes
Wings Of Joy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, UK The first reissue of this seminal debut album since it's original release in 1991 by Portsmouth's most important band, Cranes. The album features 7 bonus tracks that accompanied the original release, 4 of which were on a limited edition CD and 3 that were available only as a limited edition 12" with the vinyl version. These are now all gathered together for the first time. The CD booklet includes the band's UK Discography from their most productive period when signed to the Dedicated label. The artwork features the original sleeve and new liner notes telling the story of the band's creation, to signing their deal with Dedicated and includes excerpts of the original press reviews of the album from the NME and Melody Maker. Cranes remain a unique band in the modern history of the UK's serious music scene. They were an antidote to bland, contrived acts that peppered the charts at the time. Their experimental approach to making music still has a lasting credibility today.

Roughs (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2007)
PS, US Re-release of 'Roughs' (on Velvet Crusher Ric Menck's Bird Song label) by former and founding member of the Los Angeles rock band Sugarcult. Here, Ben's doing his very own laid-back soft-rock thing, with a little dab of country & western, quite a departure from Sugarcult's highly-toughted tautness. Leaving behind a life of rock-n-roll excess, this enigmatic album qualifies as emancipation and exorcism, a collection of intimate, personal songs about love and self-destruction. Not so far afield from singer-songwriterly, orch-popping Parasol faves like Ken Stringfellow and his Posies, Kevin Tihista and his Red Terror, Jack Logan & Bob Kimbell, June & The Exit Wounds, and The Velvet Crush.

Dead Or Alive
Sophisticated Boom Boom (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, UK "Sophisticated Boom Boom" was the debut album from UK synth pop/new wave act Dead Or Alive, released in 1984. Fronted by the imposing figure of Pete Burns, latterly a fixture on UK television -not least through his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother - it gave the band its first UK Top 40 single, with a re-make of KC & The Sunshine Band's 'That's The Way I Like It'. That single, as well as 'Misty Circles', were also hits on the US Hot Dance and Club Play charts - when the latter was reissued as the b-side to 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'. 'Misty Circles' and further single 'What I Want' were cowritten by later Sisters Of Mercy and Mission guitarist Wayne Hussey, but it was Burns' confrontational press image that generated column inches. Dead Or Alive were embraced by the New Romantics as well as clubbers, and Burns engaged in a series of entertaining press spats with Boy George about who minted that image of extravagant gay frontman, outrageous dresser first. This re-release, on CD for the first time in the UK, includes a slew of bonus tracks as well as detailed liners notes about the band's history.

An upbeat pop-tinged album with larger than life percussion, jangling guitars, and heart wrenching vocals that still maintains the crucial darkness that so often taints the west coast folk and rock sound. Dell'orso, Edda
Voice (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, UK Edda Dell'Orso is the sound of Italian cinema. Her astonishing voice recognizable to anyone who has experienced the landmark spaghetti western films made by Sergio Leone; films that were in the mid sixties scored by a young whippersnapper called Ennio Morricone. The recent revival of interest in mid-century post-modern art and the restoration of so many wonderful Morricone scores has led many to discover Edda Dell'Orso. Dirty Projectors
Rise Above (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Over three full lengths, an EP, and five different live bands in four years, DAVID LONGSTRETH has created in DIRTY PROJECTORS a body of music of original and variegated beauty. The breadth of his talents as a songwriter, arranger, bandleader and singer call to mind PRINCE, JONI MITCHELL, and BJÖRK. His constantly evolving sound - both live and on record - the sheer intensity of the music, and the originality of his voice set him apart. Among modern music makers, he is a maverick: a loner and a rebel. From beginning to end, Dirty Projectors' new offering, "Rise Above," is a reimagining of BLACK FLAG's seminal 1981 record "Damaged." It is not a covers record. Longstreth attempted to rewrite his favorite adolescent album word for word, from memory. A concept so lofty might just be hot wind if "Rise Above" weren't such a hell of a record on its own terms. It resounds with a kind of elegant simplicity: beautiful interlocking guitar parts, gorgeous three-part vocal harmonies, and some great songwriting. CHRIS TAYLOR of GRIZZLY BEAR manned the knobs, giving "Rise Above" the same rich sound that he brought to his own band's acclaimed album "Yellow House." Longstreth used the same musicians that appeared on the US tour on which he debuted these songs, and "Rise Above" captures the inventiveness and raw power of Dirty Projectors' live arrangements at long last.

Echos Of The Whales
Echoes Of The Whales (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, ITALY If whales were able to make music how would it sound? We can't be sure they would use the same resonance these two boy scouts extracted from their instruments, yet we have good reasons for believing whales music would probably be as minimal and ambient as this. Though Populous and Pierpaolo Leo are such different musical figures (the first best known for his two indie hip-hop records on Morr Music, the latter for his long time experimentations in the avant-garde milieu), they collaborated and recorded their EOTW album at home, helping themselves with all but modern
technologies, aiming at the spirit of pioneers of electronic music like Raymond Scott and psychedelic-rock heroes like United States Of America. EOTW is a record of eerie folk with guitars (played by Stefano Pilia and Jukka Riverberi of Giardini Di Mirò, among others), Farfisa organs, feedbacks and digital grains merging to create a fertile resounding ground: a real extension of the natural environment. Actually, you may find listening to these echoes very fulfilling while paddling in your kayak, cleaning up a shore or trying to photograph penguins in Antarctica.

Fall, The
Live at the Knitting Factory (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US AMG: "Recorded during the Fall's visit to Los Angeles in 2001, this remarkable album captures a remarkably unstable live show, largely peopled by recent material -- but none the worse for any of that. Most of the terms that are traditionally applied to a Fall live show are applicable here, from raucous and rambunctious, to seething and snarling. What renders this set so valuable, however, is Smith's refusal to acknowledge anything remotely approaching a comfort zone, neither for himself nor for his audience, and this set expertly captures the ensuing dislocation..."

Favorita
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 30TH)
PS, CANADA Twelve years after it was recorded but never released, Popsicle Recordings will present the sole album from Swedish indiepop pioneers Favorita. The brainchild of former Beagle and current Metro Jets frontman Magnus Borjeson, Favorita fell foul of record company politics on the eve of this album's 1997 release and it never saw the light of day. The band split up, the album was forgotten. Popsicle Recordings didn't want Favorita to pass into obscurity. Sure, the album has circulated as a bootleg among discerning music lovers for five or six years, but an album this good deserves a shot at reaching a wider audience. So they dusted off the master tapes, added eight bonus cuts and both of the band's low-budget videos, unearthed photos from the two promo shoots the band did and coaxed some inspired sleeve notes from noted Swedish journalist and blogger (and former Beagle drummer) Anders Mildner. The result is the definitive Favorita experience. Everything you could want to know about this exceptional but criminally short-lived band, there on one disc.

"Hideout" is more like a sonic galaxy that engulfs you from all angles. You're enveloped by layers of reverb, loops, and the interplay of male/female voices. A driving, forceful rhythm section fuels a propulsive energy that gives an urgent quality to much of the album, whereas other tracks convey a wistful melancholy. It's this combination of ethereal atmosphere and strong rhythm that makes the album wholly compelling and promises a powerful live experience. "Wonderfully off-kilter pop songs" - NME.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Fisher, Jeremy
Goodbye Blue Monday (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Jeremy Fisher ignited a massive amount of interest with his home-made YouTube video for "Cigarette," a folksy, laid-back, self-deprecating number whose singalong chorus, "I'll be your cigarette/Good or bad, I'm just your habit," resonated with anyone ever caught in a less than reciprocal relationship... Echoes of Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan can be heard within as well. Even better comparisons would focus on Fisher's Everly Brothers-like ear for a memorable hook and his Buddy Holly-esque enthusiasm for infectious choruses... Twinned with superb acoustic guitar, stellar drumming, sensational melodies, and grand hooks, Fisher should be waving goodbye to his blues for good."

Fog
Ditherer (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Fog started out as the project name of Andrew Broder, part of the continuum of bedroom-ensconced D.I.Y. savants making dense, loopy albums with a variety of electronic instruments. But in the course of the intervening half-decade, Broder has slowly introduced more traditional instruments into his previously sample-based work, and after several albums balanced awkwardly between electronica, turntablism (among his other affiliations, Broder is sort of an adjunct member of the Anticon stable of underground hip-hoppers) and psychedelia, Fog is now a full-on, old-fashioned indie rock trio...a sort of summation of everything Fog has been in the past, thereby clearing the decks for the trio's future... Guests Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, similarly eclectic multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird and Anticon's Why? contribute to the album's general anything-goes sense, but the remarkable aspect of Ditherer is that all of this seemingly impenetrable mass of ideas has been streamlined into 11 relatively concise and surprisingly accessible pop songs. In many ways, it's like an Upper Midwest version of Badly Drawn Boy's similarly polyglot aesthetic." (Stewart Mason)

Gang Gang Dance
Rawwar (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US "Rawwar" is the first glimpse of exactly what the band have been up to over this prolific year. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes and sprawled across three tracks, the release plays like a GANG GANG DANCE sampler of sorts; a taster for what is to come. "Rawwar" opens with "Nicoman": a live favorite from the last few years which has been refined in the studio.bombastic and dance-oriented it blends the bands affection for musical styles, propelling the listener through the four minutes of audible tribal chaos, while at the same time demonstrating GGD's talent for pop melody. "Oxygen Demo Riddim" finds the band improvising and building musical ideas into a dreamy hypnotic instrumental interlude. The final, almost cinematic, track is a studio composition entitled "The Earthquake That Frees Prisoners" which unfolds over ten minutes. This was painstakingly assembled in the studio and incorporates conversational dialog from their deceased band member Nathan Maddox interwoven into the bands compositional structure.

Go! Team
Proof of Youth (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US England's Go! Team play a fast and furious mix of 60s girl groups, 70s car chase TV themes, 80s lady MCs, and 90s guitar squalor. Their 2005 debut, "Thunder, Lightning, Strike" was critically lauded for its cheerleader anthems, syrupy string samples, and mad-as-a-hatter horn arrangements. This release bombs melodies into the stone age with its needle-in-the-red anti-production approach. It lurches from bubblegum pop to white noise in a heartbeat. Contributors include Chuck D, the original
Double Dutch Divas, Rapper's Delight Club, Marina from Bonde Do Role, Solex, and Washington, DC's Frederick Douglas All Star Cheer Team.

Gonzalez, Jose
In Our Nature (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Long-awaited second album from former Hidden Agenda artist Jose Gonzalez. While working towards his PhD in biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg, Jose González' music career began to take shape, eventually forcing him to choose a career in music over one in research. The foundation on which he builds his songs is the same on which he built his studies - he attacks his music patiently, methodically and with great interest in finding unexpected angles. In Our Nature is about exploring these angels. In Our Nature was recorded entirely on tape at a Gothenburg studio. Though González spent a great deal of time writing these new songs - playing them over and over into a voice recorder until he was confident in their arrangements - the actual recording of the album happened very quickly, taking less than two weeks in the studio to record ten songs. While it is sonically similar to Veneer, In Our Nature shows González' growth as a songwriter. Displaying a heightened emphasis on melody and strong, focused lyrics - the album is a dark combination of softness and anger that is at once mesmerizing, intimate and hauntingly epic.

Good Life, The
Help Wanted Nights (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US The songs on the band's fourth and finest LP were initially meant as the soundtrack to a screenplay that Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar, member of Cursive) started writing in 2006. These songs seemed to describe moments of raw emotion more than chronicle a linear tale, so the group kept them as close to their original incarnations as possible, recording them true to form. The results are more stripped down and threadbare than previous Good Life creations. Yet the songs are also quite expansive, digging into deep emotional territory through narrative and melody. Achingly beautiful and sharply astute, "Help Wanted Nights" details human nature in the most honest
way possible - taking risks without regret.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
Patio [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The earliest work of Welsh darlings Gorky's Zygotic Mynci can be found on the Patio CD, which compiles the band's 1991-1993 radio and studio sessions. For fans of the beauty of their largely subdued recent work, it is revelatory and essential, as it showcases the vocal and melodic gifts of Euros Childs and his band in their teenage years, when his voice was much higher, and the guitars were often much louder, but the reach for beautiful pop verses and choruses proved no less fruitless. Mix in a burgeoning folk and psychedelic sensibility characterized by keyboard smashing, plenty of sound, vocal and violin effects, and you have a set that shows just how much of a running start talentwise this group had prior to the next 5 CDs and numerous EPs they'd record..."

PS, US Attacknine Records is proud to present Brian Grainger's debut solo release "Eight Thousander". The first solo release from Brian Grainger (Milieu, Free Festival, VCV) comes in the form of another set of eight warm, blissed-out pieces. Completely improvised on guitar and organ with no overdubs, Eight Thousander is a hazy, crackly record that evokes thoughts of a mountain hike towards the end of the Summer. Melodic guitars overlap with still-life organs in an aged collage wrapped with brittle paper - the sound that Brian's music has come to be known for. Harper Lee
Go Back To Bed (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Welcome repressing of the magnificent debut album from Matinée favorites Harper Lee. Originally released in 2001, the album was an early highlight of the Matinée catalog and received a bit of attention from the late John Peel who played singles 'Dry Land' and 'Bug' on his legendary radio show. An English duo featuring Keris Howard (Brighter, Hal, Trembling Blue Stars) on vocals and guitar, and Laura Bridge (Hood, Kicker) on guitar, keyboards, and drums, Harper Lee has proven to be one of Matinée's most popular artists. Named after the famous American author of the classic novel 'To Kill A Mockingbird', the duo formed in 1999 with a plan to release one brilliant single, take the world by storm, and withdraw from the public eye just as Lee did following the success of her single novel. Luckily, the modest success of its debut did not afford the band an early retirement so they continued creating classic releases through the brilliant 'He Holds A Flame' EP last year. The band has earned passionate reviews of it's four singles and three albums 'Go Back To Bed' (2001), 'Everything's Going To Be OK' (2002), and 'All Things Can Be Mended' (2004). Featuring ten classic tracks of melancholy pop with beautifully layered keyboards and guitars plus heartbreakingly earnest lyrics, 'Go Back To Bed' is an essential release from the Matinée catalog in stock again following years of unavailability.

The former track is a slice of tongue-in-cheek disco-pop for all those born in the decade after dance music took over the world, and the latter extols the virtues of all types of girls (even those carrying a little bitty extra weight), with political correctness abounding as he name-checks that he likes black, white, Asian, and mixed-race girls along with at least half a dozen different nationalities..." PS, US AMG: "What Helios' previous release on Type lacked in character has been fixed by Ayres, no doubt about it. Eingya featured pleasant and clever quasi post-rock, which this album now turns into delightful electro-folk. It turns out that the previous album was missing only one ingredient: vocals! For the first time here, Keith Kenniff (the man behind the Helios moniker) sings, with a very nice, quiet, and frail voice. The opening track, "A Rising Wind," with its multi-tracked looped vocals and aerial ambience, immediately brings to mind Patrick Watson's sound world (minus the electric guitar) crossed with Brian Eno's. This highly melodic, slow-paced song could also be compared to Low, Barzin, or Uphill Racer..."

Ielasi, Giuseppe
August (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 12k presents the latest solo work from Italian composer Giuseppe Ielasi. August is the 4th full-length cd from Ielasi following his critically acclaimed debut Plans (Sedimental, 2003) and the stunning Gesine and s/t (Häpna, 2005, 2006). August takes a more linear approach to Ielasi's composing with sounds stretched like like layers of gauze forming a thick, soft blanket. Utilizing piano, hammond organ, guitars, dobro, synthesizers and shortwave radio, Ielasi creates deep, warm drones and suspended, scratchy melodies with a hint of despair and melancholy that make this a very introspective album. His trademark guitar and live approach to instrumentation are in the forefront yet set behind an expertly processed veil of subtle electronics. The textures are unabashedly acoustic but buried and moody enough as to question their origin. August is a haunting, but beautiful album that falls neatly between the starkness of Gesine and the scattering rhythmic complexity of s/t. LIke music for a farewell, an ending of ends, August is moody, static, slow and emotional.

Irene
Long Gone Since Last Summer (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, SWEDEN Less than one year after the debut "Apple bay" the ten piece collective Irene returns with a new, wonderful album. "Long gone since last summer" combines big arrangements, crystal clear production and unsurpassed sing along-qualities in an irresistibly elegant manner. The slightly unpolished, 60's influenced sound found on the debut has cleared up. This time Irene aimed at making an album that will be impossible to place in time when listened to in the year 2025, and still sounds great. A big sound demands a big band. Since last year Irene has expanded to a ten piece collective. This could have made touring abroad impossible, but despite this they managed to tour large parts of Europe including France, Germany, Spain and the UK. They've already booked Germany, the UK and the US for the fall and more shows are being planned. "Long Gone Since Last Summer" is written, arranged and produced by Irene's own Tobias Isaksson, aka Bobby, and recorded by Ulf Wederbrand at Studio Folkhemmet. Irene has been as high as spot 16 on the top list of artists on Elbo.ws! That means they've been one of the most blogged about bands in the world of indie pop (this page has almost 2200 registered blogs). "The new Irene track brims with jangly guitars, effervescent horns, and plenty of backing singers to answer lead vocalist Bobby's playfully referential words of adoration" - Pitchfork. "Sounds fantastic" - Eardrums.

June Panic
Songs From Purgatory (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US The material embodied on "Songs From Purgatory" was recorded in vans, dank basements and tiny apartments in Grand Forks & Fargo, North Dakota using crappy microphones on an even crappier 4-track machine. This body of work showcases a songwriting and producing talent that perhaps was only commercially held back by its medium - one which he initially embraced as a matter of necessity, but eventually grew to deliberately embrace with the zeal of a lo-fi revolutionary. According to JUNE, "Over time, I came to appreciate the sounds I was getting, and it dawned on me that recording in an expensive studio is not somehow inherently superior to 'lo-fi' recordings - it is simply a different medium." Originally released as cassette-only albums on his own label 3 Out Of 4 Records, June's master tapes were almost destroyed in the Great Flood of 1997 that consumed Grand Forks. Over 200 master tapes sat submerged under the murky Red River water for several days in his parents' basement until saved through a painstaking cleansing process that is hilariously documented in the liner notes to this collection. Brought into this world by June, taken out by the Flood, then brought back by June, these songs have been re-mastered by the able hands of the iconic KRAMER.

Kent, Julia
Delay (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Julia Kent left Rasputina in 1999, after releasing two albums on Columbia Records, and shortly thereafter became a member of Antony and the Johnsons. She played on and contributed string arrangements to the group's Mercury Prize-winning record I Am a Bird Now, and, as a Johnson, has toured Europe, North America, and Australia; played at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall; and appeared on numerous television shows, including the Late Show with David Letterman, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, and the BBC's Newsnight. In addition to her ongoing participation in Antony and the Johnsons, she also has performed and/or recorded with many other artists and ensembles, including the Angels of Light, Burnt Sugar, Larsen, Angela McCluskey, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Devendra Banhart, Mi and L'au, and Rufus Wainwright. Her debut solo effort, Delay, is a CD of multi-tracked cello and found sounds. The CD was inspired by airports, by transitoriness, and by the private emotional worlds that we create amid the disorientations and disjunctions of travel. Delay was recorded over the course of a year (or so) at home in between touring and traveling. After so many years of playing with other people Julia felt that it was time to do something entirely on her own. As a result she is the sole composer/performer on all tracks. The title refers to both the effect, to traveling and to the fact that it took so long to record. It is also homage to Arthur Russell's World Of Echo - a masterpiece of (among other things) externalizing the intimate.

The album tells, strictly through feelings, of expectations, disappointments, distance, and the futility of attempting to reclaim lost memories. "These Places Are Now Ruins" is not so much a concept as "Sea" but instead a loosely chronological album documenting thoughts and emotions experienced when returning home after having moved away. The result is often dark and abstract when recalling fears or memories we can't forget but also touching on moments when one explores hopes for the future and the impact loved ones and special times have had on our lives. Last Days' sound remains at times cinematic yet slightly lo-fi and now features more live instrumentation giving "These Places Are Now Ruins" a wider diversity and more fullness of sound. Few things stay the same and those things we wish would change never do. "These Places Are Now Ruins" examines theses themes and over its duration accepts that it is sometimes best for us all to leave the past where it is...

Lavette, Bettye
The Scene Of The Crime (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Her 2005 acclaimed release, "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise", brought well-deserved recognition to this R&B maverick who's been recording since the early 60s. Now comes the almost autobiographical "Scene Of The Crime". To make music this raw and direct, Bettye enlisted "dirty south" rockers The Drive By Truckers as her backup band. With swampy guitars, slippery Wurlitzer piano, and a driving backline, this record conjures up the spirit of great loose 70s bands like the Faces while offering Bettye an urgent, vital setting for her razor-sharp vocals. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, where she recorded "Child Of The Seventies" in 1972 - a masterpiece that was shelved then released 30 years later. Returning to Muscle Shoals was like returning to the scene of a crime; thus the album title, and the intense, personal music within.

Le Loup
The Throne Of The Third Heaven Of The Nations' Millennium General Assembly (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Created during a time of personal crisis, "The Throne" is a cataclysm, an escape, and a journey. Inspired largely by Dante's "Inferno", the complex themes of this record are characterized by mounting tension and dramatic swells, coupled with an engaging emotional resonance that lifts just as much as it illuminates. A collection of rushing narratives that connect the individual struggle of each of us to the death of the universe in a manner that's both intimate and unshakably vital. "...Le Loup are going for the multi-layered collage of instrumentation sound and the end result is a surprisingly fun and danceable mix of music that can range from Arcade Fire to Death Cab For
Cutie to even a smattering of Denali" - Pastepunk.

Lekman, Jens
Night Falls Over Kortedala (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Like a modern day Chet Baker, Jens loves to sing about heartache. This is his first album in over three years, and Kortedala refers to a neighborhood in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden - "a depressing suburban hell". It also refers to a vague musical pop sound with hints of tropicalia that has been coming out of Gothenburg's clubs the last few years. "Night Falls Over Kortedala" features cushy studio versions of many previously unreleased live favorites and guest vocals from label-mate Frida Hyvonen and El Perro del Mar.

Linfinity
Live at Marcata: Demos (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US New York City-based LINFINITY had seemed a bit bottle-necked for some time to frontman DYLAN VON WAGNER. Having written five volumes of his John Cale-meets-Alan Vega series "The Manual For Free Living" and having only recorded one full band album, he was getting an itchy trigger finger. He had been playing new songs with solo acoustic arrangements at live performances, and he liked the sparse arrangements. When approached by ST IVES, it seemed like a good opportunity to show some of his sketches that will appear on future albums. Von Wagner recorded the album live in Marcata Studios, a massive barn in upstate New York with producer Kevin McMahon. Perched on a 30-foot balcony overlooking the barn, Von Wagner recorded the album late in the evening, using a Marshall stack as a PA, giving it a unique bite and space. Staying up for 24 hours straight, Kevin McMahon did a quick mix and master of the proceedings. The result is a raw and thrilling document that would rest nicely somewhere between Cale's "Vintage Violence" and Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" demos.

Lucksmiths, The
Spring A Leak (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US 45-track double CD. Double digipak w/ 12 page booklet. After a notable two-year absence from the new-release racks, The Lucksmiths return with a mighty "don't argue" in the shape of 'Spring a Leak', their exhaustive new collection of lost treasures. No mere greatest hits collection, 'Spring a Leak' compiles over a decade's worth of great recordings that have never made it onto a Lucksmiths full-length: b-sides, alternative versions (from 7" singles and demos), songs recorded especially for compilations, live, radio and TV sessions, cover versions, remixes, and various previously unreleased ephemera. Forty-five songs in all, packaged in a deluxe double-CD digipak with cover artwork by budding Melbourne illustrator Trudy White. A major undertaking, both for the band and the mastering engineer who had to sift through piles of CDs, old DATs and cassette tapes, 'Spring a Leak' is the first time many of these songs have turned up on a digital format. The 'Macintyre' 7" (recorded in 1995 and originally limited to 500 highly sought-after copies) sits comfortably amongst more recent work including cover versions of well-loved songs by The Bee Gees, The Smiths, The Modern Lovers, and The Magnetic Fields, as well as lesser-known tracks by some of The Lucksmiths' friends such as The Simpletons, The Ladybug Transistor, and The Sugargliders (cousins, incidentally, of Lucksmiths singer Tali White). Also included are live tracks and radio sessions recorded in various corners of the world, from Melbourne to Stockholm, Paris, Bellingham, the Los Altos Hills (near San Francisco), and El Dorado (near, um, Wangaratta). As ever, The Lucksmiths' somewhat minimalist sound is broadened by a host of guests, from groups like US indiepop stars The Aislers Set, Poundsign, Kissing Book, The Mosquitoes, and Still Flyin', as well as artists closer to home such as Craig Pilkington of the Killjoys (who recorded many of these tracks at his Audrey Studios), Pete Cohen of Sodastream, Kellie Sutherland of Architecture in Helsinki, and Darren Hanlon. Both Kellie and Darren played major roles on The Lucksmiths' acclaimed 2000 album 'Why That Doesn't Surprise Me'. As on previous compilations 'Happy Secret' (1998) and 'Where Were We?' (2001), The Lucksmiths have done some tidying up around the archival recesses a little spring cleaning, if you will and gathered these loose ends into one neatly-knotted bundle more likely to satisfy the completists than to win themselves an army of new fans. By the nitpickingly precious Lucksmiths' own admission, the bar was lowered just a little on this one (although a few tracks originally slated for inclusion were eventually deemed unlistenable, and consequently omitted): there's the odd bum note, and, inevitably, given the nature of the project, varying degrees of quality across the recordings. In its entirety, however, 'Spring a Leak' exhibits both the remarkable consistency and ongoing development of one of this generation's most esteemed and distinctive pop groups. Although occasionally misunderstood and underrated in their homeland of Australia, The Lucksmiths have in the course of their 14-year career amassed a devoted international fanbase as well as some deserved praise from certain corners of the media. Of their 2005 album 'Warmer Corners', Pitchfork Media described The Lucksmiths as "idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but not weak, sincere not so much in presentation(cf. Springsteen, Bruce; Confessional, Dashboard) as in presence (cf. Richman, Jonathan; Comedy, Divine)".

My Little Airport
Zoo Is Sad, People Are Cruel (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 12TH)
PS, SPAIN MY LITTLE AIRPORT is an indie-pop/electro-noise-pop band from Hong Kong (the second Hong Kong artist in the Elefant Records story, right after THE PANCAKES), formed by P and Nicole, college classmates since 2001, and well known in the Hong Kong area thanks to the big success they had with their debut album. "Zoo is sad, people are cruel", is a fourteen-song album compiling the best moments off their two albums. A sweetest selection that will make you laugh and it will make you sigh, and above all it will fill you with joy. Their lyrics are about relationships and stories between P and his friends and acquaintances. Really, the lyrics are about this. Just check out song titles like "Victor, fly me to Stafford", "You don't wanna be my girlfriend, Phoebe" or "Leo, are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?". Their twee-pop sound shares the naïveté of the Sarah Records bands, the simple chrams of CONFETTI and THE SOFTIES and the unaffected intonations of HEAVENLY's Amelia Fletcher. Sometimes, their sound tends more towards punk-pop à la HELEN LOVE (as in the short pill that is "Gigi Leung is dead"), and they also openly acknowledge their fondness for SLOWDIVE y MOJAVE 3, who might be a big influence on the final track, "Dee, it may all end up tomorrow". But, with a song titled "When I listen to The Field Mice", what else could they be but an indie band?

Reichenbach Falls (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Grown from the halls of NYU, Ravens & Chimes' debut introduces a youthful, optimistic lightness in the form of eclectic, ear-grabbing tunes. CMJ called it "beautiful" and "unique", evoking comparisons at times to either Wolf Parade or Voxtrot - a sound urging youth to grow up to be young again - no justifications necessary. Lead vocalist Asher Lack repeatedly asks himself, "Is it possible to change without abandoning the person you were?" "Reichenbach Falls" encompasses the raw quality of youth in a split open-heart combination of first lust, disappointment, and self-doubt.

Red Pony Clock
God Made Dirt (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US A psychadelic indie-pop band from San Diego, CA. Usually there's a lot of junk going on in the songs due to there usually being a lot of people playing the songs. Some of the people can play/sing really well. Some can't seem to do anything very well. But they're all very nice people, regardless. Some songs are sad. Some are happy. But we try our best to make them all nice. We love making music!!! With that great bit of information straight from the myspace out of the way Red Pony Clock have been around for what seems forever, but never seem to have had it together. One release after another thrown together for their annual summer tour that was to mainly take them from California to the Athens POPFEST and back. They found a home on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records back in 2000 when Gabe (rpc) met Mike (hhbtm) at the Kindercore Expo in Athens, GA. Mike loved the song that Gabe presented him for his next comp Happy Happy Birthday to Me Vol 2 that he instantly told them he wanted to put out a single. The 7 inch single "Pete" came shortly after in 2002. Red Pony Clock kept evolving adding and subtracting members like an accountant. The next release was a 4 band split CD with the bands Elekibass, Poison Control Center, & Ryan Anderson released by both HHBTM & Bi-Fi Records. Another split CD was to come shortly after with the fun Swedish band Cat & Dog Dialogue released on Gabe's own label that he shared with his at the time girlfriend Lizeth called Gabe & Lizeth Records. Each year after Red Pony Clock would throw together a rushed EP on a cdr to help fund their tour to popfest and back.

Rene, Henri And His Orchestra
Music For Bachelors (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK Henri Rene...as a backroom music exec in the early modern period, he's big news in the history of the biz. In our world he is more acclaimed as one of the originators of innovations like what is today known as Space Age Bachelor pad music. He was also as a producer, arranger, and exec instrumental (see what I did there?) in creating RCA's legendary LIVING STEREO and STEREO ACTION series! Rene was born in New York City, but his parents moved back to Germany, and Rene grew up in Berlin, studying at the Royal Academy of Music in Berlin. Eventually he became Musical Director for RCA's German affiliate Electrola, as well as for the famed German movie studio, UFA. Returning to the U.S. in 1936 he became musical director for the international department of RCA Victor. In 1941, he formed the first continental-styled small pop orchestra in the US. In the 1950s, he returned to RCA as musical director in International, backing a variety of singing stars, such as Harry Belafonte and Eartha Kitt. This first collection of some of Rene's finest 1950s work uses one of his most famous covers, which features the lovely Jayne Mansfield posed seductively in a negligee, busy on the telephone (presumably calling her favorite bachelor to come over check out her hi-fi). Super collection of romantic sounds for your rendezvous! Beautifully packaged as usual! When she heard Tom Carter and Robert Horton's Lunar Eclipse, she wanted to record with them. Lisa and vocalist Lee Ann Cameron drove from Austin to the Bay Area and a session was planned. In the meantime, Tom was journeying in New Mexico and drove by a road sign to Sky City, so he had found the name for the new group. The day of the session, Lisa and Lee Ann drove from San Francisco, picked up Tom in Oakland and arrived at the studio on the hill. Lisa had somehow left her equipment in SF. As they drove up, I heard Tom say, "That's so Texas." Then the magic started. Lisa asked, "Do you have a cymbal?" "Yes" "An extra contact microphone?" "Yes." "A snare?" "Yes." Some strips of metal?" "Yes." Then we walked over the abyss together into Sky City. Sky City is psychedelic space music with all the atoms of surfaces freed to inter and counter react. Noise in the outer dimension. Horton's homemade inventions, Carter's lyrical ebow guitar lines. The walking on the moon vocals of Lee Ann Cameron. The vibration of material planes by Lisa Cameron. The broken blues of the boot (Horton's oldest instrument 4 strings on a piece of wood the shape of Italy). Sun Ra ark and Neil Young's arc put through a digital blender and reconstituted for space travel. The magical musical thing (MMT) a toy synthesizer from the 70"s. A great drawing on the inside cover by Natacha Robinson. A chance for music induced time travel to parallel worlds and an opportunity to receive a collect call for the future from Sky City.

Springfields, The
On An Island Of Dreams (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK Dusty's springboard to success was undoubtedly The Springfields. It was the act that got Dusty on TV, got into the charts with productions by her future studio stalwarts Johnny Franz and Ivor Raymonde and, most importantly, got her to the States where she would eventually base much of her later career. Looking back, the trio appear as a welcome breath of fresh spring air in an early 1960s confused by an autumnal mix of coffee bar rock'n'roll and cocktail bar easy listening. In short, The Springfields were that unique moment in time before Dusty finally decided her roots were no longer in silver threads and golden needles but in the blonde peroxide bottle of sixties pop. Their Folk Pop crossover scored many successes and the 12 singles, 5 EPs, 2 LPs , 1 Soundtrack (2 tracks) released on The Springfields by Philips in the UK are all included here...

Strings of Consciousness
Our Moon Is Full (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "In experimental circles, electronica-related and otherwise, the mid-2000s marked a slight return to the song format. Call it the logical extension of the underground folk revival or more simply a desire to apply experimental findings to genres of wider appeal, the fact remains that noisy textures, electronic constructs, and post-rock anthems permeated into the song realm, to a point where some reviewers started writing about "electro-acoustic pop." Strings of Consciousness' debut full-length marvelously illustrates how artistically successful this approach can be... The group's lineup features seasoned experimentalists Hervé Vincenti, Stefano Tedesco, and Philippe Petit, Spaceheads/Pere Ubu's Andy Diagram, the Sea and Cake's Alison Chesley -- and that's only part of the group's core. Also present are the guest vocalists: Foetus' J.G. Thirlwell, Girls Against Boys' Scott McCloud, and the almighty Barry Adamson, again just to name a few. The music does not blend only sound sources (acoustic/electronic), but genres, too: folk, industrial (the Current 93-tinged "Crystallize It"), even Western in "In Between," featuring a captivating recitation by Pete Simonelli... "Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness," featuring Oxbow's Eugene Robinson, and "While the Sun Burns Out Another Sun," with the post-beat poetry of Black Sifichi... Its beauties are so numerous and subtle that they take time to unfold. A serious contender for year-end lists across the board." (François Couture)

Valentina
La Valentina (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, MEXICO Valentina González is probably one of Mexico's most intriguing vocalists. A songstress who possesses a beautiful and soulful voice that recalls the mannerisms of Jeff Buckley, Sidsel Endresen or Camille. Her debut album takes Jazz, Gospel, Mexican Folkloric influences and filters them through a minimal polyphonic prism. The result merges the traditional influences into a contemporary sound that is sparse and elegant - much like David Sylvian's Secrets of the Beehive or Nico's The Marble Index updated old musical forms into new ones. Singing in both English and Spanish, Valentina takes us across a lush collection of songs that benefit from her exquisite taste and adventurous foray into experimental song crafting. "La Valentina" is the third release of the Mexican label Verdigris a sub-label of Static Discos.

Kurt Cobain About A Son: Music From The Motion Picture (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US This film is an intimate and moving portrait of Kurt Cobain, told entirely in his own voice. Based on more than 25 hours of never before heard interviews conducted by noted journalist Michael Azerrad for his book "Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana". The soundtrack does not contain Kurt or Nirvana's music. Says Azerrad, "It's like a mixtape you'd give to a friend or lover to share ideas, not just about music but about your whole point of view. It's to try to show them what you're all about. So if watching 'About A Son' is like seeing the world through Kurt's eyes, then listening to this music is like hearing it through his ears." Artists include Arlo Guthrie, Melvins, Bad Brains, CCR, Half Japanese, The Vaselines, Butthole Surfers, Scratch Acid, Mudhoney, Iggy Pop, Lead Belly, REM, David Bowie, Mark Lanegan, and Benjamin Gibbard.

B9 bis: Brussels Cold Wave 1979-82 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK 18 tracks. B9 bis, a definitive compilation CD tracing the development of post-punk and new wave music in Belgium between 1979 and 1983. Originally released on indie label Sandwich Records in May 1981, the compilation album B9 featured ten exclusive tracks by a range of diverse Belgian new wave, electronic and underground artists, including Digital Dance, Polyphonic Size, Kid Montana, Pseudo Code and Prothese - the latter the first recording project by Daniel B of Front 242. Although Sandwich was destined to be overshadowed by better-known Brussels labels such as Les Disques du Crepuscule and Crammed Discs, founder Michel Lambot soon afterwards formed European indie empire PIAS. Now digitally remastered and available on CD for the first time, B9 now features an extra eight bonus tracks in order to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of new wave music in Belgium between 1979 and 1983. Mostly taken from rare singles, the extra tracks include songs by The Names, Marine, Front 242, Siglo XX, Allez Allez, Berntholer, Jung and Isolation Ward. As well as revised artwork, this expanded 70 minute edition of B9 also includes detailed sleevenotes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

Wooden Shjips
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Debut album? Might come with a bonus CD including all of the group's early vinyl-only releases including a previously unreleased unedited eight minute version of "Dance, California"? It might! Wooden Shjips, a quartet from San Francisco heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism, and garage rock excess, started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation... The band released two acclaimed records in 2006, beginning early in the year with a self-released 10-inch, Shrinking Moon for You and a 7-inch on the Sick Thirst label, and received praise from veteran scribe David Fricke in Rolling Stone: ""Wooden Shjips are from San Francisco, but the concentrated ferocity of the freakouts on their two very-underground releases--a white-label ten-inch EP (the band gave away the first 300 copies) and a clear-vinyl single ("Dance, California")--arrives via the '70s Germanic-guitar lunacy of Guru Guru and the confrontational repetition of VU."

Yeasayer
2080/Sunrise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 2080/Sunrise is the single for the forthcoming YEASAYER full-length debut, due out the fall of 2007. Soothsayers, crystal-gazers, and time travelersŠthey have all seen the future. Spilling words of Armageddon, the apocalypse, and the second coming of Christ they speak of man's impending doom. With countries on the warpath and our decaying world growing inhabitable it is easy to succumb to the voices of these scholars. YEASAYER have also been witness to the future. "2080/Sunrise" documents their visions and experiences in the years that lie ahead. Discern what you will from the lyrics, but YEASAYER'S songs flow with posi-vibes that will make you dance and trumpet. It is optimism, it is joy. "It's a new year, I'm glad to be here, it's a fresh spring, so lets sing. In 2080 I will will surely be dead, so don't look ahead, never look ahead."
