Boris
Feedbacker
PS, US A single 43-minute composition / symphony (broken into five tracks for easier access) from Japan's drone druids that goes from etheral to crushingly heavy and everything between. Stark in contrasts and attention to texture." Feedbacker begins at the core, with ambient waves of Earth-like drones rippling across an otherwise silent nine minute expanse before Atsuo spills into his cymbals, commencing a funereal march. Bassist/vocalist Takeshi drawls up and down his double-necked bass while Wata (the femme fatale guitarist) curls out little tongues of blue flame... Boris is considered stoner rock, but they are also hailed under the noise-rock genre for their collaborative efforts with noise groups such as Merzbow and Keiji Haino. Their songs range from long (up to 30 minutes) progressive-style songs, with heavy guitars but many slow beats.

Cale, John
Process
PS, UK The film PROCESS premiered in the Official Selection at last years' Berlin Film Festival, and is due for a July theatrical release in the UK and Ireland by distributor Tartan Films.Process is Cale's most recent original soundtrack recording and marks the beginning of his creative relationship with avant-garde filmmaker CS Leigh. The film, featuring Beatrice Dalle and Guillaume Depardieu, was described by Variety as being "one of the most adventurous works screened at this year's Berlinale," with Leigh displaying "a take-no-prisoners art house rigor." With Cale being " no stranger to taking music in experimental directions" (Rolling Stone), the coming together of director and composer was a natural and inspired union. Leigh explains: "When I was working on Process in the earliest stages I knew I wanted to work with Cale. He has made groundbreaking contributions to difficult cinema and understands the architecture of film sound better than anyone I know. Cale gives you more than music. He gives you a sound landscape that permeates every frame and resounds beyond the borders." Cale's work for Process is a haunting, discordant collection of mostly solo piano pieces, described by the Edinburgh International Film Festival catalogue as being a "menacing and incendiary score." Cale has created a sound that perfectly compliments the radical approach of CS Leigh, of whom Le Figaro writes: " His aesthetic sense is taken to extremes. His incisive images disturb, shock. You cannot stay indifferent watching Process." Continuing in this vein the soundtrack is at once ominous, provocative yet poignant. John Cale, well known as a founding member of The Velvet Underground and for his successful career as a solo artist, has been writing film scores since his early collaboration with Andy Warhol on Kiss and Eat. Since then he has gained critical acclaim for such works as Love Me by Laetitia Masson, a series of films by Philippe Garrel; The Birth Of Love and The Wind Of The Night, Xavier Beauvois's Dont Forget That You're Going To Die, Jonathan Demme's film Something Wild, Mary Haron's films I Shot Andy Warhol and American Psycho and Patricia Mazuy's film Saint CYR for which he was nominated for a French César for Best Music. CS Leigh and John Cale continue their association with the upcoming film American Widow for which Cale is writing the score and producing several new tracks. The film is currently in production. Cale and Leigh are writing the much anticipated Warhol film Everybody Had A Camera together for Leigh to direct, scheduled for shooting in 2006.

Duprat, Rogerio
A Banda Tropicalista Do Duprat
PS, UK Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1932 the composer Rogerio Duprat lived in São Paulo and it was there in the early sixties that the he developed an interest in the avant-garde and that would soon lead to him studying in europe with Karleinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. Returning to Brazil, Duprat wrote scores for walter Hugo Khouri's films and against the background of military dictatorship duprat met the leaders of Tropicália, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil; drawn to the movement by their determination to absorb universal culture and revolutionize Brazilian music. So in 1968, he wrote several arrangements for the seminal Tropicália album which involved Veloso, Gil, Tom Zé, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Nara Leão and Torquato Neto and played a decisive role in liberating the sound of the groundbreaking albums of Os Mutantes. Duprat's arrangements are marvellous; intelligent, imaginative, playful and distinctive. He has been called the George Martin of Tropicalia, the Brian Wilson of Brazil. Rogerio Duprat's solo LP A Banda Tropicalista was released in 1968 when he was at his peak. Sao Paulo was living a modernist dream, classical music was in the air and so was psychedelia. Duprat audaciously fused these elements. Under Rogerio's skilful auspices, material by John Fred & His Playboy Band, The Beatles and The Cowsills is harmonised with the compositions of Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Os Mutantes perform - joyfully - on four tracks. Sometimes knockabout, always within an atmosphere of refinement, the album is a cultural mosaic, a positive happening. In later years Duprat spent time writing jingles but was slowly forced to withdraw from his artistic activities due to hearing problems. He now lives in retirement on his farmhouse in the Sao Paulo countryside. Today, the work of this important pop composer is being discovered outside of Brazil. Seek out these productions. The name of Rogerio Duprat on any record is the stamp of quality.

Enduser
Run War
PS, US First full length album for Enduser on Ad Noiseam, on which Lynn Standafer presents a selection of 17 previously unreleased tracks recorded between 2000 and 2004. Ranging from the most beautiful tones to the hardest rhythms, "Run War" displays the broad range of styles and genres at which Enduser excels. Atmospheres collide with staccato beats, voices are chopped by precise beats, the whole thing on a thick bass served with powerful beats. The definitive Enduser album that demonstrates that this musician is not to be missed.
AdNoiseam-046
CD
$14.75

Enuser, Bong-Ra, Shitmat
Monsters of Mashup
PS, GERMANY Each artist provides here two new tracks, rivalling in infectious bass lines and catchy breaks. Bong-Ra and Enduser open the ball with two squashed rave tunes, heavy on drum'n'bass and free parties influence, while Shitmat crushes a megaton of samples and influences before letting the pounding beats and fast tempo break in. Bong-Ra's back with an abrasive, destructured and noisy piece, before letting Enduser conclude the record with an organic, dowtempo tune.

Epic Soundtracks
Good Things
PS, US Co-founder of Brit post-punkers SWELL MAPS reinvented himself as an eccentric, critically acclaimed piano balladeer during the 90's w/his first ever solo LP "Rise Above". "Good Things" is his final studio album rec. just before his untimely death in 1997, released here for the first time.

Evie Sands
Any Way That You Want Me
PS, UK "Take Me For A Little While", "I Can't Let Go", "Angel of The Morning", "Any Way That You Want Me"... the original versions of ALL these classics were, believe it or not, by the same artist, EVIE SANDS! The young girl whom no less than Dusty Springfield called "my favourite singer" and who recorded on such classic rock'n'roll labels as Blue Cat/Red Bird, Cameo-Parkway and A&M! Starting her career as a singer and songwriter at the tender age of 12, Evie was soon taken under the wing of Chip Taylor, who wrote all the above songs for Evie, only to be cheated of the hit on each occasion (except in Northern Soul circles where she always RULED!) until "Any Way That You Want Me" became a monster hit in 1969, followed by this, her only 1960's album. A superb collection of pop/soul with that magical A&M Sound touch for good measure! Evie stepped back from performing to concentrate on songwriting, her songs recorded by artists as disparate as Gladys Knight, Dusty Springfield and Barbra Streisand and more recently Beck and Beth Orton. Today, Evie has returned to recording, making a series of acclaimed records with her old friend Chip Taylor helping out, and featuring on new projects by Brian Wilson and The Wondermints among others. This is the first CD release of her classic A&M album Any Way That You Want Me with full-on participation from Evie herself... need we say more!

Excepter
Throne
PS, US This weaves a dangerous course through the orange cones of cortex caressing sound. Drawing from boom-box emitters as disparate as CHROME, COMUS & that weird-ass Indian techno music you heard eating that Somoza. Lots of floor crawling stage exclamations make the band more slippery than a greased watermelon. With a lineup jamming out unclear instrumention but perhaps including detritus of Casios, battery needin' samplers, 6 string part catalogs & occasional percussion, they manage to craft a deeply & creepily eerie sound that includes sounds from all over the radio dial. One could easily relax to this record & have one's heart forget to stop beating.

Field Music
S/T
PS, US Hailing from the same celebrated North East (Britain) scene that spawned The Futureheads and Maximo Park, FIELD MUSIC add something more cerebral to the spiked Mackem brew. Comprising a core of three members (ANDREW MOORE plus brothers PETER and DAVID BREWIS) and an ever-shifting crew of local luminaries, Field Music are something of a North East supergroup. Peter was The FUTUREHEADS original drummer; Barry Futurehead was in one of the many early Field Music line-ups and sometime drummer TOM ENGLISH is on loan from MAXIMO PARK." Their pop is huge, loaded with melody and harmony, and perfect for fans of Big Star, Modern Lovers, My Bloody Valentines, Neptunes, etc.

Fun And Games
Elefant Candy
PS, UK When legendary producer/songwriter Gary Zekley (Phil Spector, Jan & Dean, Yellow Balloon, The Clique) met The Fun And Games he was delighted. This group of Texan garage avant-gardists, buddies with The Red Crayola among many others, wanted to make a coherent, of a piece POP album and Gary was just their man! Setting up a deal with the head of the new UNI label, legendary promo guy Russ Regan, who was enroute from naming and breaking the Beach Boys to signing and breaking Barry White, Zekley set to work producing a prime slice of California SoftPop... in Texas! For years, this elusive album has been one of the most sought-after Zekley productions and now, here it is! INTENSIFIED with contemporary singles sides and the usual amazing Rev-Ola packaging. Let there be FUN & GAMES!

Gate To Gate
I Turn Black Keys
PS, US Confused like a two-headed snake trying to bite its own nonexistent tail, GATE TO GATE churn through gross tones, bass shudder and worst of all-vocals-with exactly the maladroit precision you'd expect from such a beast. This release presents one new 38-minute mess of blackened clatter and clunk, as well as the music from two extremely limited cassettes Bane and House With The Clock In Its Walls in remastered form. Heavy-handed and heavy-footed industrial noise from the blackened minds of GREH (HIVE MIND, CHONDRITIC SOUND) and MIKE CONNELLY (HAIR POLICE, GODS OF TUNDRA, WOLF EYES). Nearly 80 minutes of satanic black sludge.

PS, US First solo work from leader of Norwegian psych pop band DIPSOMANIACS celebrates the sounds of psychedelia's Golden Age w/pure folk, buoyant pop, melodic surf rock, blues forms & psych simulatenously, as if they were never meant to be parsed into distinct genres. A few nods to the Fab 4, the mad genius of Syd Barrett, social commentary of Ray Davies & the innovative West Coast fusions of Love & the Byrds put them on the same train as Green Pajamas but definitely playing in a different car. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Jandek
Raining Down Diamonds
PS, US 42nd Jandek album, 3rd new release of 2005. Like some sort of spirit photography, the cover photo features the ghostly image of a bearded man wearing a startling piece of haberdashery. Perhaps some sort of prayer cap? The darker side of Jandek, with deep, rumbling bass and despairing vocals, i.e. "Jesus take my will/take mine and make it yours."

Kapote Musiek
Praag/Rotterdam
PS, US The two live performances on this disc portray the sound of a microphone passing through antimatter-the haunting atmosphere of a slow drone, a glimpse of captured transmissions, the grinding crackle and crunch of a machine eating itself alive only to finally collapse in a sea of manipulated feedback ripe with wooden electronics running low on batteries. Recorded in '95 and '98, these two pieces both feature the lineup of ROEL MEELKOP, PETER DUIMELINKS and FRANS DE WAARD.

Nuns
S/T
PS, US Classic debut LP by original San Francisco punks, the Nuns! Although the Nuns, led by Alejandro Escovedo (future Rank & File) and Jennifer Miro (Debbie Harry's West Coast counterpart), ruled the San Francisco punk scene in the late 70s, courted by major labels and selling out nightly shows at San Francisco's hottest clubs, by the time the band broke up at the beginning of 1980 they still had not recorded enough material for a full-length album. Thankfully, however, the band came together once more for the sake of recording this LP before calling it quits for good. This classic slice of '77 punk was recorded in just 20 hours in May 1980 and is the only remaining testimony to their greatness and to what could have been.

Orchids
Unholy Soul + Singles
PS, UK 20 tracks. LTM is pleased to announce the second of three CD album re-issues by acclaimed Glasgow band The Orchids, who recorded for cult label Sarah between 1987 and 1994. Formed in 1987, this prolific yet overlooked five-piece recorded a string of singles for Sarah as well as three excellent albums, Lyceum (1989), Unholy Soul (1991) and Striving for the Lazy Perfection (1994). Often compared to similarly cerebral pop operators such as Felt, Aztec Camera and Primal Scream, the band split in 1995 at the height of their powers. Almost all of their records were produced by Ian Carmichael of One Dove. Newly remastered for CD, Unholy Soul + Singles runs for 70 minutes and includes nine bonus tracks as well as liner notes by Alistair Fitchett. Stand-out tracks on Unholy Soul include Dirty Clothing, Bringing you the Love, The Sadness of Sex Pt 1 and the should-have-been single Peaches. Among the pick of the binus cuts are the singles Something for the Longing and Bemused, Confused and Bedraggled. Contemporary reviews praised the record as "a beautiful album time less melodies for sure" (Dave Simpson in Melody Maker).

Ryan, Barry
Singing The Songs Of Paul Ryan 1968-69
PS, UK When Paul and Barry Ryan split as a performing duo in 1968 nobody expected to hear from them again. Their fine Britpop singles and overlooked semi-Freakbeat/Pop albums weren't selling, they were trapped on a cabaret circuit they loathed. The image of the handsome swinging, singing twin brothers was under severe strain. So when Barry reappeared at the end of the year and scored a colossal worldwide hit (reaching number one in six countries!) with the epic, Paul-penned "Eloise" it was akin to a particularly unlikely phoenix rising from the ashes. The single was a stunning five and a half minute tour de force of grandiose orchestral pop and Uber-Jim Webb-ism which sounded unlike anything else in the charts at the time, and is fondly remembered and covered worldwide still! The subsequent entirely Paul-penned album, imaginatively entitled Barry Ryan Sings Paul Ryan, received rave reviews and has become something of a cult favourite amongst fans of contemporary orch-pop works by Scott Walker, Glen Campbell and even Tom Jones. Other hits including "Love Is Love" and "The Hunt" followed into the '70s, as did five more solo albums, none of which have ever been reissued on CD.... until now! "Barry Ryan: Singing The Songs Of Paul Ryan (1968-69)" couples that classic debut with its remarkable eponymous 1969 follow-up and adds two ultra-rare tracks found only on the German version of the second album, all remastered for your sonic delight! It also features in-depth liner notes containing new interview material with Barry, previously unseen photographs, rare cuttings and memorabilia. A great rediscovery awaits!

Sambassadeur
S/T
PS, SWEDEN Debut album from Sweden's brightest shining indiepop hope. The first single "Between the lines" was pure indie guitar pop, gorgeous lazy melodies wrapped around fuzzy guitars and far away tambourines. Still, this album exceeds every expectatoin. Formed in an apartment in 2003 Sambassadeur are Joachim Läckberg - guitar, Anna Persson - vocals & guitar, Daniel Tolergård - bass and Daniel Permbo - vocals and guitar. The band cite influences such as The Go Betweens, France Gall and Wire, and one listen to their highly infectious album will bring to mind the likes of Shop Assistants, Belle & Sebastian and Radio Dept. "Between the lines" was somewhat of an indie hit, not only in Sweden, but also in the UK where it was playlisted at XFM and BBC. it's heartfelt, gentle and emotive songs, simple and understated. Just like every Sambassadeur song. This might just be the Scandinavian album of the year.

Sickness/Slogun
Split
PS, US SICKNESS crafts his own brand of technical, harsh, detail-oriented blasts that cut and shatter. Movement, complexity, and intensity are the defining elements of the Sickness sound. Includes a cover of the classic Slogun track "Kill to Forget". True crime electronics. From the gutters of New York City, SLOGUN is a punch in the gut and a kick in the face to the power electronics community. Singularly obsessed, Slogun is true crime-violent and dirty. Constant abuse, shouted vocals, searing sound. This release rescues all of the material from the limited double-3-inch CDR set released for their 2003 Japan tour. Packaged in PACrec-style CD wallets with four panel inserts.

Spokane
Close Quarters
PS, SPAIN 5 songs. Spokane is Rick Alverson's new "more solo" project. Having been the principal songwriter for Drunk in the course of their four full-length records and two EPs, Alverson has decided to explore a more personal vision with Spokane. This five-song EP after his "Leisure & other songs" debut album- is resonant with the inability of finding permanence anyplace but where one finds oneself already: bending over a sink, sitting in a chair to tie one's shoes, or nodding resignedly to greet a neighbor. Musically, it evokes the song craft of Drunk, of which Alverson is a founding member, if it were less collaborative and more singularly arranged. It is a very strong work that comes solely from the much harder school of songwriting which strives to commingle music and words without sacrificing either.

Tate, Grady
Windmills Of My Mind
PS, UK Born in 1932 in Durham, North Carolina, Grady Tate is both world-renowned as a virtuoso jazz drummer and as a top class baritone. He began singing at age four and started playing drums at five. Tate developed his drumming during a stint in the air force in the early fifties. After his discharge, he taught as an English and speech teacher, and then moved to new york to become an actor, studying at the American academy of dramatic arts. Once in New York, however, his reputation as an outstanding musician resulted in work with Quincy Jones. His session credits read like the history of jazz; Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans, Jimmy Smith, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan , Peggy Lee, Stan Getz, Lalo Schifrin, Tony Bennett and Charles Aznavour. He was the drummer on the Johnny Carson show for six years. Tate began to seriously develop the vocal aspect of his talent after Peggy Lee heard him sing and introduced him as part of her show. In 1968 he signed to Gary McFarland's Skye Records. Here he would make three solo albums (Windmills Of My Mind, Feeling Life and After The Long Ride Home) and would collaborate with mcfarland also on the soundtrack for the film Slaves which starred Dionne Warwick. Although Grady's renditions of Michel Legrand's 'Windmills Of Your Mind' and 'Work Song' are a delight, the outstanding vocal performances are on McFarland's imaginative and perfectly judged arrangement of 'And I Love Her' and on 'Sackfull Of Dreams' which has a wonderfully endearing warmth about it. This recording and 'Naughty Number Nine' for Multiplication Rock (part of Schoolhouse Rock) are probably Tate's best known vocal performances. Tate recieved two Grammy nominations as best pop vocalist in 1973 and 1979. Since 1989 he has been a lecturer in jazz studies at Howard University.

Thanksgiving
The River
PS, US This is the project of Portland Oregon teenager ADRIAN ORANGE, who shows much promise & maturity despite his tender age (19). He plays (with minimal backing) a loose, ragged, & odd indie folk, often eschewing pleasing tunefulness in favour of spirited & jumbled incoherence where the hooks fight it out with the stumbling. Critics have referenced him near Palace/Will Oldham, Nirvana & American folk music. This is a flowing simplicity of passion, snarling through rocks of sweet melancholy, spilling over banks of heartache & honesty. A mostly guitar/bass/drums record, space is abundant for ADRIAN's haunting vocal tone to spin tale's all on its own.

Thuja
Pine Cone Temples
PS, US Steven R. Smith (Mirza, Hala Strana), Glenn Donaldson (Skygreen Leopards, Mirza), Loren Chase, & Rob Reger (Franciscan Hobbies) coalesce interests in field recordings, found sound, experimentalism, folk & psychedelic rock to weave seriously detailed & immense journeys into pure sound. Across the grand expanse of Pine Cone Temple's 2 discs, implements such as piano, guitars, percussion, & well-placed contact mics are blended like pigments to conjure the subtlest of sonics, pulling every lost drop of their immediate universe into floating & buzzing cinematics. Assembled from recordings that span 1999-2004, this album documents the most organic & beautiful ambience Thuja has conjured.

Florian Fricke, David Gilmour, Manuel Göttsching, Edgar Froese, Moebius & Roedelius & Fripp & Eno are all exhumed, but Vocokesh re-image the references into something far more extreme than the aforementioned ever imagined.

Vorpal
An Incomplete Guide To Vorpal Music
PS, US You will ask yourself: "What the fuck is this?" Yep, it's the debut release from VORPAL. A sort of rickety old wooden rollercoaster careening on a broken track of amazing fast breakbeat processing, insane noises, and held together in a sort of antique haze. VORPAL is Andy Kozloski, From Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, and we can honestly say that "An Incomplete Guide to VORPAL Music" is the greatest album ever made. It's an explosive collection of tracks both new and ancient, creating some vague form of nostalgic neurosis. But it slams too. "An incomplete guide..." could easily find itself between abstract hip-hop like Def Jux or Anticon, as well as Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, and Otto Von Schirach. Hell one could even find a few traces of the Grime sound all the journalists are talking about. But fuck all that, just give it a listen and hear for yourself. This is the fourth release from Cock Rock Disco, founded by Jason Forrest & has been established to release amazing new music by a new generation of producers.

Anthem Of Space (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 15TH)
PS, US Featuring members of ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARADISO U.F.O., BOREDOMS, ZENI GEVA, GHOST, WHITE HEAVEN, GONG, SUBVERT BLAZE & HIGH RISE. "If this attack were to succeed I would need musicians just as powerful, if not more powerful, than Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. We decided to take the members of Mothers of Invasion & shift them to the new group, giving birth to a new Acid Mothers Temple. Just then I received a transmission from my own cosmos - the group should be named Cosmic Inferno. It was utterly fitting for this is truly a battle between heaven & hell, between The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. & The Cosmic Inferno. Alarma Man
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, SWEDEN Fans of Pelican and Kinski and the new instrumental scene will dig Alarma Man's expansive instrumental sonic labyrinths, built to inspire and demolish. Instrumental and daft in it's execution, Alarma Man can excite, sooth, and equally throw an unprepared listener into a state of confusion. Mind-numbing drum beats, steady bass lines, and odd guitar rhythms accenting with tapping that defies the nature of the sonic guitar itself. A mad mixture of dark intentions and old roving spirits that brings to mind Don Cabellero, Man Or Astroman, and Fugazi, yet with something all the more sinister and forward looking.

Barbez
Insignificance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 18TH)
PS, US Insignificance is the result of two years of intensive work and the culmination of seven years of exploration and growth by this unusual and powerful Brooklyn-based band. After the critcal success of Barbez's self titled full length debut on Important Records, they've returned with a groundbreaking sophmore album and a new Theremin player who Bob Moog has called the single "greatest living" Theremin player on Earth. While Insignificance maintains Barbez's trademark ethno-punk-cabaret, the compositions have become more tight, more spacious, more frenetic and more explosive. Insignificance has more of a compositional complexity and careful instrumentation than Barbez's debut, promising to be a classic in this burgeoning sub genre known as Punk-Cabaret. Insignificance was recorded, mixed and co-produced by legendary New York engineer/producer Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth, Dresden Dolls, John Zorn) at BC studios near the Gowanus canal in Brooklyn.

Birthday Massacre, The
Violet (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 9TH)
PS, US The Birthday Massacre formed in 2000 as Imagica. The following year they moved to Toronto and changed their name. Their first album, "Nothing And Nowhere", came out in 2002. Two years later, they self-released the EP "Violet". Metropolis took notice, and is now re-releasing "Violet" with four extra tracks. The band's sound blends different genres of music, but maintains a retro cinematic flavor. Mixing themes of horror and tragedy with fun and satire, they create a unique and versatile sound by combining new wave and hard rock elements. With the fusion of keyboards and guitars, the lyrics tell
a story which creates an emotional tone full of darkness and tragedy. "Violet" is a deeply moving album.

Broken Spindles
Inside/Absent (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 23RD)
PS, US Joel Peterson wrote this record without any input from fellow band members. "I think it was because of that separation from other people's input that the writing style shifted. I found myself keeping things a little more elemental; steering away from programming, opting for sparser percussion, and keeping instrumentation as minimal as songs could take. The lyrics became a lot more direct and the vocal style kind of followed suit. It just didn't seem appropriate to layer these things that were said in pretty bare, straightforward terms with a ton of effects...I wanted to at least make myself feel something through music, and it seemed that the best way to do that was just to be as real and honest as possible."

Conrad, Tony
Bryant Park Moratorium Rally (1969) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US An October afternoon in 1969. Midtown Manhattan. A rally in Bryant Park against the Vietnam War. Down 42nd Street towards Times Square, Tony Conrad is adjusting microphones in his 5th floor loft, one directed at the TV set - where it will pick up live local news coverage -- the other pointing out the window, where the echo of speeches and crowd noise mingles with the oceanic rush of crosstown traffic. As the event is about to begin, he rolls tape. Thirty-four years later, we hear what he heard. And the juncture, for so many reasons, could not be more critical. As the Bush Administration pursues a risky military agenda in the Middle East - one with unsettling long-term implications both at home and abroad - we see a nation not divided, as in the Vietnam Era, but strangely complacent. Our media-saturated reality functions like a drug, instantly televised warfare a new entertainment, and organized public dissent a novelty at home and a roaring chorus everywhere else. Conrad's recording of the Oct. 15 Vietnam Moratorium Rally is an eerie flashback that offers urgent new insights into our own lives and times, post-9/11 and full on into a new millennium.

Cursive
Difference Between Houses And Homes, The (Lost Songs And Loose Ends 1995 - 2001) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 9TH)
PS, US Ten years since their formation, Cursive offer this collection of two previously unreleased songs and ten sought after tracks from their out-of-print 7-inches. Also includes a 24-page booklet featuring the story that is the album's namesake, written by front man Tim Kasher and illustrated by Eastern
Youth artist Yuriko Yoshino. Each song is replete with thoughtful composition, offset by Kasher's now signature howl. Building from soft, nuanced intros to anthemic finishes that sear, many songs evoke the cathartic swell for which Cursive have become known. Suburban discontent; romantic, familial,
and platonic relationships in trouble; feelings of isolation - all are set against Cursive's delicate balance between calamity and refrain. This isn't an album only for fans. It's a cohesive release in its own right, telling the story of a band, its label, and a group of friends.

Dialog Cet
Like Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, SWEDEN It is historically proven that a good band rarely stands still. This hypothesis is made into scientific fact when analyzing the elements. The key element in question is Dialog Cet. A band with humble beginnings in Jönköping, Sweden, in the year of 1998. A band that has been receiving praise for their ingenuity, playfulness, and forward thinking from their very onset. Playing a brand of music self-dubbed as "Labyrinth Punk", which lies somewhere between Sonic Youth, Unwound, and Scandinavian abstract reasoning. Receiving praises even from the post-punk luminary Ian Mackaye (of Fugazi fame) as "brilliant, fucking brilliant". Music not afraid to move or perplex you...open your ears and sound the alarm. Dialog Cet have allowed their experimental side come free but at the same time maintained their pop sensibilities that were displayed on their last album "Konsumera Era". In this journey that is otherwise called an "album", we are introduced to many wild and unusual creatures. Like the spirited "Mazzrilla Gorialla", where guitars, pianos, and frantic drumming whirl around in a wild dance. Or the rambling lo-fi trails of "Dragonfly", with acoustic guitars and quivering vocals. And before you thought you saw it all the approach- able "Dolphin Lundgren" that is covered in synths and guitar plunks that create a deep-sea mood. "Like Animals" is a large album with many contrasts. It spins wildly and calmly floats, it hits hard but softly caresses, and it howls monotonous and caws with many notes!

Dialog Cet
Konsumera Era (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, SWEDEN Travelling into the nether regions of music Jönköping, Sweden's Dialog Cet released their third album "Konsumera Era" in 2003. The tale of this band is one of musical and musician mathematics. Initially a two piece instrumental group on their debut "Crocodile Hunt", then to a three piece on the critically acclaimed "Ny Metall" album. In 2002, they went back to be a two piece, using additional musicians to record "Konsumera Era". Eerily similar at times to early Bailter Space (still one of New Zealand's finest exports) Dialog Cet's sonic attack combines early 90s Chicago/Minneapolis post-punk dissonance to the weird rock/labyrinth-punk drive that Dialog Cet are known for!

This is a collection of 13 unbridled songs filled with spontaneity & vigor boldly serving as a monster of an introduction to the independent music community worldwide.

Friends Devin Underwood and Jared Sheehan from Boston Massachusetts present 8 tracks of their quirky electric boogaloo for your jam. Mischievous kids let loose in a room full of keyboards and drum machines. "There's something very carefree and childlike about these tunes...and disturbingly funky that i like. It makes me think of Mad Monster Party, breakdancing mummies, or ice skating with a werewolf. Neon funk and Phat shoelaces for sure!" - Nick from Freescha. Recommended for fans of; chemistry sets, Jean-Jacques Perry, sling shots, ghetto-blasters, Herbie Hancock and his robot, planets, cuttin'the rug, the L.A. Flotation Toy Warning
Bluffers Guide to the Flight Deck (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Flotation Toy Warning's ambitious debut album, Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck, cements this London five-piece as modern masters of their own brand of baroque, experimental pop. The US press is already raving about the release - Pitchfork raved that "it's a muted pulse and gleaming sheets of guitar. It's a human chorus channeling the great cosmic mouth of Brian Eno's "2/1", slowly chewing on humming organs and live drums. It's the Flaming Lips imitating Scott Walker." It's not just Pitchfork who are excited about the release - there was a recent feeding frenzy on MP3 blogs, NPR profiled a song on a recent episode of All Songs Considered and Magnet are doing a featured review, where Flotation Toy Warning are profiled as the best new band in the August/September issue. With one foot in the eyebrow-raising pop experiments of Van Dyke Parks, Scott Walker, and The United States of America, and the other foot planted firmly alongside such modern-day avant-pop practitioners as the Unicorns, Flaming Lips, or Tindersticks , Flotation Toy Warning blend found sounds, electronics, homemade and traditional instruments and lush production. Their dreamlike pop soundscapes are simultaneously classic and undeniably modern. Wonderfully warped and deranged, Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck is the rare masterwork that sounds equally skewed through a set of headphones or blasting at top volume.

Gayle, Philip
The Mommy Row (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US The Mommy Row is guitarist Philip Gayle's monstrous, magma opus; the biggest, jaw-popping swallow one can now take in the upper/outer echelon of free thinking acoustic voyagers. This gent's three previous solo records collected smitten global praise yet held no clues this would be next. Recorded in pristine audiophile splendor, the NYC-via-Houston-based Gayle multi-tracked himself in duo, trio, hell ¬- sextet catacombs of 12-string guitar, aluminum egg bar, prepared toy piano, baritone ukulele, hand held cymbals, classical guitar, gongs plus an isle more of stringed wood and tempered metals. At its core, Gayle locks these spatial clusters, subtracting adding or multiplying the bent themes that pass between, into a cohesive oft melodic form that shows itself in genius flashes. Orbiting an overtly damaged sphere risen from Derek Bailey, Sun City Girls, Thelonius Monk, Christopher Tree, Harry Bertoia, and years of bedroom perfection, these pieces owe most to the moment of recording. Gayle's style remains totally unique, crossing itself with Oriental motifs, classical, humor, flamenco and free improv leanings

Some believe they're the next band to break out of Philly. Some say their sound is a little Goth with groove, like The Cure's "Head On The Door", or power-wave like Duran Duran's "Seven And The Ragged Tiger". Hollingsworth, Taylor
Tragic City (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 9TH)
PS, US "Taylor Hollingsworth and his band are sloppy and wild in the mode of The Stooges or The MC5 (or The Rolling Stones at their worst), which are likely models, yet this band's overall tone often recalls bands such as The Only Ones or The Heartbreakers. If they played fast and hard instead of loose and slinky, they could even be The Saints. A lot of the sloppiness is salvaged, or accented, by white-hot guitar runs that take the sound into Johnny Thunders territory, by way of Billy Gibbons. Vocals, for the most part, remain in the more disturbing/intriguing range of Peter Perret and Nikki Sudden, so you can see why it is difficult to accept this band's approach as just a happy accident" - Black & White.

PS, US Gainesville, Florida's Holopaw (named after a Florida town none of them are from) rise to more textural, delicate artistic heights on this follow-up to their 2003 Sub pop self-titled debut. Each dynamic track tells its tale through sweet, understated, and complexly orchestrated melody that engages as it soothes. Thick with strings, winds, drunken bossanova percussion, stomping, handclaps, wine bottles, synths, and thrift store furniture-as-instruments, the album shows a band unafraid of brash creativity and improv instrumentation. Holopaw has toured extensively with label-mates Iron And Wine.

Hototogisu
Ghosts Of The Sun (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 18TH)
PS, US On this double cd for Important, The Hototogisu masterfully create a dense sediment of tetonic drone with the thickest layers of guitar, vocals and electronics. The Hototogisu are obviously season sonic travelers, featuring the seminal legend Matthew Bower (Skullflower, Sunroof!) and Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards). Ghosts Of The Sun is one enormous composition, nearing 2 hours in length, unfolded and nailed together in 7 movements. Starting with a slow drone electronic crawl and climaxing with crackling bone percussion buried howls of haunted minds, Ghosts Of The Sun cries out from beneath an earthquake of guitar feedback and distortion. Ghosts Of The Sun compresses eternity, from the creation of humanity to it's own destruction, into 7 parts on one double album. This is epic and total sonic overload, by way of The Hototogisu. Ghosts Of The Sun was originally released in as an art edition double cdr of 100 copies.

Maquiladora
A House All On Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 15TH)
PS, US This is the natural sound of the southwest corner of Alta California aglow in warm sunshine and awash in the cool blue pacific. This is the sound of the golden landscape, a buzz with honey bees, sea breezes, and the spirit of both the natives and the first intrepid Californio souls who came to love and live here. Maquiladora harness the mojo of this unique and still relatively culturally unknown and mostly misunderstood region. For lack of a better genre classification, let's say they play Western, desert-folk, country/rock... of the mellowest and most gently mind expanding kind. The trio record themselves in the attic studio of Phil's 1911 bungalow in downtown San Diego. Maquiladora: "The sun light shifted moods. the seasons passed. we sweat and froze in the attic of old Luisa crafting this record. It's now our tenth year together in close quarters. We've seen many colors change, drifting together, then apart then together again. The southwest does that to you at desert, ocean and city speed. The orange city lights in the early summer call us to meet again. This record is focused and relaxed. We mixed it ourselves, had Joe Plummer play the drums, took our time with it, did other stuff, came back in a colder season and started up again. The songs are of middle and lower California amidst the blooming desert, the swirling ocean air, and the storied nights of most western cities. The place inside the place. As the moving darkness and moonshine fell on us through the skylights we did some work and talked about reference points. We grew older, over cigarettes, and our songs changed. It's important to know that with three voices and songwriters we've been through a lot together and if you listen closely you can hear that. Like the familiarity you have with the sound of the leaves of the tree you live near, or the ocean sounds after 20 years of hearing, of being. We've put out a lot of music, but to stand and sing some of these new songs has been different. It is a different place now. A subtle shift of expression and voice. It's been moving for us and we have some hope it may move you. And so, we've wrapped up our thoughts and called it "a house all on fire" a transformation away from yesterday .....let 'it breathe... let 'it breathe. "These reclusive Californian's do for country music what Radiohead did for Brit pop: dismantle the machine and rebuild it with alien parts. Andrew Paine Bradbury.

luminaries like Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, and Philip Glass, he also carries a heavy torch for FM rockers Steely Dan and The Cars. This new record is a more upbeat affair. Menos El Oso (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 23RD)
PS, US Indie-pop flaunting substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop. Recorded, produced & chiefly knob-twisted by the band itself. This is 11 steps further into the forward-thinking, angular rock canon. Weaving through territories long established by '70s prog-rockers, '80s proto punks, & '90s art rock mind fucks, MINUS THE BEAR invokes the modern love affair between dance-driven strategy, & lush, Upper Pacific sweater rock. This album muses on urges of the collared contemporary- money, sex, detail-obsessed detective work, yet manages to avoid the supposed high browed, overt conclusions that are so not hot shit.

Montgolfier Brothers
Journey's End (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 17TH)
PS, UK 4 track EP + 2 videos. Manchester's Roger Quigley (At Swim Two Birds) and Mark Tranmer (Gnac) present their first new material since 2002's The World Is Flat (Poptones). The critically-acclaimed duo, whose distinctive sound blends the music of Nyman's minimalism and Legrand's tinkling melodiousness with a lyricism mirroring the humor in despair of Chaplin's Limelight, return to the Vespertine organization, which released their debut album, 1999's Seventeen Stars. Quigley's unblinking dissections of relationships on the turn, the main theme of the first two albums, make way for a more serene exploration of the changing face of his home town and his place within it, all delivered in his trademark deep, intimate tones. Journey's End sees The Montgolfier Brothers finally reach their destination. 'Sky-lines change, memories still remain... Some friends stay, some make their escape... ' In a coffee shop or bar, they're there. Invariably alone, in the same seat, at the same time of day, quietly watching their little piece of Manchester change. Around long enough to remember buildings constructed and the same ones demolished in their own lifetime. And around long enough to see the people in their lives go the same way. 'I've walked these streets, I've known this place too long... And now you've gone, got used to being alone...' The capitulation of the defeated soul. Echoing Sinatra's A Man Alone, The Montgolfier Brothers map out the journey of a survivor of love, loss and grieving... for a city, a memory, a moment. 'You can't stop time, hard as you might try... We're not here long, and then you're gone... ' Journeys End is taken from the album All My Bad Thoughts, released in the autumn 2005 on Vespertine & Son, and includes three exclusive tracks as well as enhanced slideshows of the title song and the unreleased instrumental gem Operation Faff.

Beautiful Noise (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Since the year 2000, Salim Nourallah's music has received praise from publications such as Time Out New York, Amplifier, Salon.com and Rollingstone.com. The public's appreciation for his work was clear when he
played SXSW 2004 to a standing room only crowd, for his debut of Polaroid. Salim's latest release, Beautiful Noise, finds him reflecting on themes of mortality, aging, lost love and, refreshingly, hope as an antidote to
despair. His keen pop sensibilities shine through on songs like "Montreal," a McCartney-esque anthem to the joys of coupledom and "The World Is Full of People..." a ballad filled with fatherly worries and love. On Beautiful Noise Salim connects with his listeners with emotional and engaging songwriting, comparable to the Beatles, Wilco, Big Star, or Beck.

PS, US Stockholm, Sweden trio Peter Bjorn and John's debut North American release Falling Out is an assemblage of ingenious pop songs, cleverly recorded and masterfully arranged, sounds drawn from the simple (a Speak-N-Spell) to the symphonic (a symphony). Think A.C. Newman and The British Invasion and you're on the right path. Songwriters Peter Morén and Björn Yttling (producer for Concretes, Shout Out Louds, Nicolai Dunger, many more) are joined by drummer John Eriksson. These 10 songs are about falling in and Falling Out of love with people, places, and ideas.

Portastatic
Bright Ideas (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 23RD)
PS, US This is a rollicking, tuneful guitar rock record made for driving fast with the windows down. Stripped down to the guitar-bass-drum essentials the songs soar & harken back to a time when records had 2 sides, good songs were on the radio & the word album meant something. More Badfinger than Buzzcocks this album captures the more rocking side of PORTASTATIC.

Richmond Fontaine
Fitzgerald, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 9TH)
PS, US The follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed "Post To Wire" is a quiet departure from the raucous, visceral send-ups that have made these Portland-based rockers a band to watch. Written at the Fitzgerald Casino in chief songwriter Willy Vlautin's hometown of Reno, this album is a stark collection of songs about the people who live in the shadows of a casino town. It contains the most vivid and compelling songs the band has written to date. It debuted at #13 on the UK Indie Chart in May, and Richmond Fontaine are again experiencing the kind of praise rarely bestowed on any artist. "The most
beautiful sad album of the year" - Q. "'The Fitzgerald' is mind-blowing" - Five Stars, Album Of The Month, Uncut, June 2005.

Sleeping People
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, US Though aptly described as a "pleasant headache," Sleeping People are more concerned with filling your headspace than hurting it. They build up elaborate song structures, only to deconstruct them through a series of complexities that would most certainly run away from themselves without the group's rigorous-yet-fluid control. Recorded on analog tape by brother-producer tag team Jay and Ian Pellici (Deerhoof, Rumah Sakit, Dilute), Sleeping People is rich with clarity and depth. Tonally similar to early Yes albums, and bearing more than a passing resemblance to classic King Crimson, it is an album of stunning complexity that never abandons the thoughtful melodicism that carries all great records. Featuring past and present members of Pinback, Tarentel, Rumah Sakit and Howard Hello, Sleeping People's pedigree no doubt partly explains its fascination with trance-like repetition and aggressive time signature changes. But nothing about the group adequately explains why every one of their songs makes you feel like you're being chased by the cops.

See You In Earth (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16TH)
PS, SWEDEN A mutation of rock, electronica and punk! Surrealist noise-rock and angular zoom-pop from Swedish conglom featuring Silverbullit/Citizen Bird member Anders Gustavsson. One of Jim's favorite and noisiest Swedish releases. Innovative, original Gothenburgbased quartet formed in 1999. The way they mix electronics, avant-garde and punk ideas in a decidedly rock-orientated format is unlike most contemporary music produced in Sweden today, weird, wild and wonderful.

PS, US The 2nd full length from Oakland, CA trio TOTIMOSHI, intersects earthquake-heavy rock & wicked sludge riffage with the wiry hooks & dynamics of '80s post-punk, Spanish melodies, & an adventurous, occasionally improvisational fuzz attack. It's sort of like someone giving a Beggars Banquet band circa 1985 a cocktail of steroids, huge amps & battered copies of MELVINS' Stoner Witch & MAINLINER's Mellow Out. Heavy, crunchy, catchy, hypnotic, Mysterioso? winds, grinds, & explodes every step of the way. This re-issued, re-tooled version features enhanced CD-ROM extras, including 2 music videos

Unstable Ensemble
Embers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Unstable Ensemble's third full-length is their most finely honed improvisational gesture. Embers is a ménage of sax/guitar melody slivers shifting amongst crackling electronic tones and bowed percussion. Existing amongst the shadowy fringes of North American improvisation since 1999, Unstable Ensemble's driftage has carried itself vast miles toward border crossings and large/no audiences to bestow ephemeral sound demonstrations as anti-placates to jazzbo tokers and noise-junkies. Encapsulating many forces, Embers surges with titanic electronic gale and absolute stillness while inner lyrical intricacies summon forlorn memories. A wholly distinct extension of the Musica Elettronica Viva and AMM world-view.

Spend an Evening with Saddle Creek (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 23RD)
PS, US Film by Jason Kulbek & Rob Walters. The Saddle Creek Records story told through interviews, home movies, rare live performances and never-before-seen archival footage with BRIGHT EYES, THE FAINT, CURSIVE and many others. In 1993, a group of childhood friends in Omaha, Nebraska released 100 copies of a cassette tape by a 13 year-old singer-songwriter / little brother, Conor Oberst. Two years later, the name Saddle Creek Records was etched in vinyl and what began as a collective local music scene would soon gain attention as a center of independent music in America. The story of the record label as told by the people who made it happen. With extensive interviews, rare performances and archival footage, the film is an oral and visual history of how the combination of talent, dedication and collaboration launched bands like Bright Eyes, Cursive, Azure Ray, Rilo Kiley, Lullaby for the Working Class, Desaparacidos & The Faint into the national eye & has fostered a close-knit family of artists that continues to inspire each other and their fans. "The most vital underground rock scene in the country... by any measure, the bands and the city are in the middle of an extraordinary musical run."-NY Times. Vibracathedral Orchestra
Tuning To The Rooster (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 18TH)
PS, US Tuning To The Rooster is so far the first and only record ever made by The Vibracathedral Orchestra using a 24 track mixing board. Typically the group records on 2 tracks despite the fact that their eccentric and complexly arranged sound practically requires 24 tracks. In what the group calls a "foolish" decision, this 24 track recording seesion, recorded with Richard Formby (Spacemen 3 engineer), was split up and released on all sorts of limited edition vinyl releases including splits with Low, JOMF and a giveaway cd made for a Julian Cope curated festival. In early 2005 the group went back into the studio and mixed this album as it was originally intended, as one full album. "This is music as a shamanic aid, made as much for the players themselves as for the listeners. But as I'm writing from the listening perspective, I have to inform y'all that this is music to get you there. Every track sounds as though it has always just 'been there', it's just you ain't quite tuned into its peculiar frequency until now. The 12-and-a-half minute Wearing Clothes of Ash is like a piano-led PARADIESWARTS DUUL-period drone-a-thon with John Cale and Terry Riley guesting on viola and keys. Following this, the sublime Baptism Bar Blues is proof positive that they can rock the riot house with pure adrenaline rush when the decision is made. Indeed, this track is magnificent and should be available to the masses free or in pill form." Julian Cope.

Windsor For The Derby
Giving Up The Ghost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 16th)
PS, US Windsor for the Derby are a study in dualities. It is made of two primary band members preserving not only a musical identity but a friendship over many years and many miles. Creating music that is equal parts dance and folk, a truly disparate combination of styles that come out sounding completely organic. While listening to "Giving Up The Ghost", you hear not only the beautiful stylistic tension of two styles at play, but also the room and atmosphere itself. Windsor's music has always been a play on modern pop, infused with giant amounts of space, a space which both reflects the physical distance between its members as well as providing an artistic counterpoint to the massive inundation of noise and data that our society is bombarded with daily. The past eleven years have seen Windsor For The Derby reach across the country and make the long distance relationship somehow work. With founding members Jason McNeely in Austin, TX and Dan Matz in various locales along the east coast, WFTD always seemed more a "project" than a band. Last summer both found themselves living in the same city as they both relocated to Philadelphia. In the past WFTD had to rely on their semi-annual meetings to conduct their business, but now they are regularly playing live shows and prolifically recording in their home studio.
